Photography Tours & Workshops

2023

We hope you enjoy our latest seasonal brochure, which is packed with ideas to inspire your wildlife photography holidays for 2023 and beyond. In this issue, we highlight our photography tours region by region, feature two Wildlife Festivals - Tanzania and our NEW Falklands & South Georgia voyage and share a few of our leaders' highlights from 2022.

We're constantly looking for new and exciting Photography Tours and Workshops to add to our collection, as well as new expert leaders … and our portfolio continues to expand as a result. We've included a calendar on pages 18 and 19 to help you plan your next exciting photographic adventure in 2023 and 2024.

Our Photography Tours

We offer over 70 dedicated small group Photography Tours and Workshops to suit all abilities. Our range of holidays has been designed to offer the perfect combination of outstanding wildlife viewing, exceptional photography opportunities and expert tuition. All of our holidays are led by expert photographers, most of whom are awardwinning and/or work as professional photographers, and have a wealth of technical skills and field experience.

What to Expect on our Wildlife Photography Tours

On all our Photography Tours, you have plenty of opportunity to develop your technical skills through a series of informal workshops 'in the field'. Suitable for all levels, from basic to advanced, the workshops cover a variety of photographic techniques and skills relevant to the subject matter and/or particular habitat. Expert photographic leaders will offer as much one-to-one time and tuition as is feasible, and the pace of the trips is such that there's ample time to get the most from the photographic potential of each location visited.

You can choose to join like-minded wildlife photographers on one of our small group trips or arrange a tailor-made private itinerary to suit your requirements with private guidance from your chosen expert photography leader, should you wish.

Our Photography Tour Leaders

Our collection of wildlife photography tours continues to grow and so we're working with an increasing number of expert wildlife photographers based in the UK. Here, we're delighted to introduce you to each leader and throughout this brochure, their names feature on the tours they lead.

Having grown up in South Africa, Neil learnt his craft photographing Africa's iconic species and trained as a professional guide. Now, based near Bristol, he focuses on wildlife closer to home, leading photography trips in the UK and Europe as well as a range of tours in Botswana and South Africa.

Mark is an award-winning writer, zoologist, TV and radio broadcaster, and a widely published wildlife photographer. He has built up an extensive collection of wildlife and landscape images taken in over 100 countries on all seven continents and served as head judge in Wildlife Photographer of the Year.

Bret is a multi-award-winning wildlife photographer and a full-time member of the team at Wildlife Worldwide. He leads a number of tours for us around the world and has a particular love for African wildlife. In 2017 he won the 'Birds in Flight' category in Bird Photographer of the Year.

Ben is an environmental photojournalist and natural history cameraman, with a focus on highlighting the beauty of the natural world and also how we interact with it. He has had success in international competitions, been published in numerous magazines and has helped film footage for the BBC.

Nick has worked closely with us for many years to develop a unique portfolio of wildlife photography tours which are second to none! A two-time category winner in the Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition, Nick's tours form the backbone of our exciting programme.

Having spent many years travelling to far-flung destinations with her camera, Emma brings her love of wildlife photography, nature and travel to the Wildlife Worldwide team. Emma has travelled extensively, with Canada, Borneo and Kenya being among her favourites and has developed a real love of primates.

An award-winning nature photographer and university lecturer, Alex's photography has received high acclaim, especially his spectacular and innovative macro images which include the winning entry in the 'Hidden Britain' category of the British Wildlife Photography Awards

Ben has travelled to many countries from a young age across North and Central America, as well as more widely in Europe. Ben's fascination for travelling helped fuel his passion for wildlife photography and coupled with his infectious enthusiasm, he's an excellent leader and can be found leading many of our tours.

A talented wildlife photographer, Kevin has been awarded in numerous competitions and is best known for his incredible work with the Atlantic puffins of the UK. He has been running workshops for many years, passing on his knowledge of the natural world and photography expertise.

Multi-award-winner and full-time photographer, Sean's work is regularly featured across a range of national and international publications. Sean has led numerous workshops in the UK and further afield in Europe at locations including Skomer, Greece, Finland, Spain and Poland.

Tanzania Festival of Wildlife

Our 2024 Festival of Wildlife will be held in Tanzania, in the vast wildlifefilled plains of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, on the edge of the Southern Serengeti. Team member and Wildlife Photographer Emma Healey gives an insight on what to expect on this very special trip.

In true Festival fashion we'll have exclusive use of Ndutu Safari Lodge and in addition to the expert local team, I'll be joined by fellow wildlife photographers Bret Charman and Nick Garbutt. A comprehensive programme of photography workshops, talks and tutorials will be available alongside the usual morning and afternoon game drives.

The Festival takes place in April when over two million migratory animals made up of wildebeest, zebra, eland and Thomson's gazelle will gradually be easing westwards, following the rains and the new grass it brings. At this time, it's anticipated that the great herds will still be within striking distance of the lodge, allowing us to enjoy this magnificent spectacle, but significantly also leaving behind areas void of the easy pickings of migration and therefore forcing the resident predators, of which there are many, to work harder for their meals. The timing represents a period of transition, not only for the wildlife, but also for visiting tourists, as the mobile camps relocate north, making for a more exclusive experience.

The Ndutu region of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area is famed for its big cats and is arguably one of the best places in Africa to see lion and cheetah. The enormous acacia-studded grasslands are the perfect habitat for both, but they also hold a tantalising variety of other sought-after species. Both serval and caracal roam these lands, as do striped hyena, bat-eared fox and three species of jackal. Falling within a conservation area rather than a national park we're also afforded a greater level of flexibility and can venture off-road in pursuit of sightings,

an important consideration in such a vast wilderness.

In addition to our stay at Ndutu Safari Lodge, we're offering a pre-Festival extension to the world-famous Ngorongoro Crater, a lost world of Eden that provides refuge to the Big Five, alongside a wealth of ungulates and vibrant flamingo-filled lakes. Our base will be the Ngorongoro Sopa Lodge, the only lodge on the Eastern Rim with breathtaking views out over the crater. Post Festival, there will be the option to join a 3-night walking safari in a remote camp before continuing on to the verdant forests of Manyara National Park for two nights, offering a completely contrasting experience to our time at Ndutu. For those with a passion for primates there's the opportunity to travel to neighbouring Uganda to visit sites for both mountain gorillas and chimpanzees.

The Festival promises to be the experience of a lifetime and we'd love you to join us.

Highlights from 2022

2022 was an incredibly busy year for our photography leaders as they led tours across the globe, taking you in search of the world's finest wildlife photography encounters. Here we feature a few of those wonderful moments and some of the exceptional imagery.

Arctic Fox Photography Bret Charman, Iceland

Coming down the steps of Kviar Lodge, I'm surrounded by a winter wonderland. All around me is white, well except for the deep blue of the fjord in front of me, and of course, the blue morph Arctic fox. The foxes here are particularly special as they stay brown throughout the winter months. This might not sound ideal, but trust me when I say there's something magical about these little canids. Laying on the snow, getting eye-to-eye with one of these charismatic foxes is beyond a treat. A young female fox approaches my group and with a snow bank between us, she just peeks over the top. All that surrounds me is white, except for a small brown fox with the most intensely coloured, mischievous eyes. I was smitten. I still am. The photos weren't too bad either. I'll be back.

South Luangwa Photo Safari Ben Sutcliffe, Zambia

As the new year begins it provides an opportunity to look back on the highlights of 2022. There's one moment that instantly comes to mind as the highlight of the year and that's when I was leading a group in Zambia's South Luangwa National Park and we were lucky enough to spend a considerable amount of time with some lion cubs. These cubs were probably no more than three months old, so they still had the kitten-like playful streak in them. Their mum was constantly attempting to keep them in order and keep them away from the vehicles. But as with many young animals, their curiosity got the better of them and they nonchalantly strolled up to our vehicle to give it a closer look. This of course made for some great images and some even better memories.

Skomer's Perfect Puffins Kevin Morgans, Skomer Island

The UK is packed full of wonderful wildlife, from the rugged Scottish Highlands to its beautiful coastline. But for me, the highlight of each year has to be the return of the puffins. Seeing these charismatic seabirds once again light up our coast with their colourful beaks, comical waddles, and inquisitive nature will never fail to put a smile on your face. Skomer is ideal for any photographer looking to capture magical images of puffins, or simply a place to sit back, relax, and watch the birds as they go about their daily routines. But Skomer offers so much more than just puffins. Each spring, the island becomes a bustling seabird metropolis, home to countless breeding birds, such as guillemots, razorbills, kittiwakes, and choughs, to name a few. And, if you're lucky, you may even encounter short-eared owls hunting over the meadows.

Brazil's Big Five Photo Safari Emma Healey, Brazil

On one of our Brazil photography trips in October, we saw an anteater on the other side of the field, so we stopped and got out of the vehicle, standing on the road photographing it. It was coming towards us and the sun was setting behind us, casting a beautiful golden light on to it so we went under the fence and edged into the field to a clear position. Fully expecting her to retreat once she spotted us, the wind was in our favour and we all sat still and silent. She continued moving forwards, finally coming within around one metre of us. It was far too close for most of our lenses and was one of those times that you just look on in awe, holding your breath, hoping that you continue to remain hidden. We did just this and she walked straight past us, so close that you could hear her breathing and sucking the termites out of the holes.

Falklands & South Georgia Festival of Wildlife

Discover the magical wildlife of the South Atlantic on our charteredvoyage to the Falklands & South Georgia aboard the Magellan Explorer, accompanied by our expert team. Wildlife Worldwide Founder Chris Breen shares an insight into this epic voyage.

Join us for a photographic fiesta on our Festival of Wildlife 2025 in the company of professional wildlife photographers

Mark Carwardine and Nick Garbutt, as well as a highly skilled team of on-board naturalists, a wildlife artist and a wildlife sculptor.

To maximise our time in this incredible environment our epic voyage begins in the Falkland Islands, and our base for the next 14 nights is the exclusively chartered Magellan Explorer, a state-ofthe-art, purpose-built polar vessel.

With the Falklands home to several species that are unlikely to be encountered elsewhere on the trip, we spend our first full day exploring the prime sites of the archipelago, observing bustling colonies of rockhopper and gentoo penguins, and scanning the waters for Peale's and Commerson's dolphins, which are frequently encountered here.

From the Falklands we sail towards South Georgia, where one of the world's most impressive wildlife spectacles awaits.

South Georgia may be only 170 kilometres long, have no trees and be half covered in permanent snow and ice, but this rugged, austere, wintery landscape contrasts markedly with the immense profusion of life that gathers around the coastal areas. The shores are smothered with hundreds of thousands of king, gentoo, chinstrap and macaroni penguins, clifftops are encrusted with breeding albatross, petrels and other sea birds and the beaches are peppered with 6-metre-long elephant seals battling for control of their beaches (and their harems).

This is without question one of the wildlife wonders of the world and it provides unprecedented photographic opportunities - all in long hours of daylight.

Along the way, we'll enjoy an outstanding schedule of entertaining and informative lectures, talks, workshops and masterclasses by Mark Carwardine and Nick Garbutt as well as top polar and wildlife experts, professional photographers and filmmakers.

The departure of our Festival of Wildlife in mid-October is designed to be visiting at an exceptional time as it marks the start of the wildlife migrations and the beginning of the breeding cycle for many species. This extended photographic voyage is sure to provide an unsurpassed depth and variety of experiences that will not only be unforgettable, but also provide a constant steam of peerless photographic opportunities.

NEW Festival of Wildlife Falklands & South Georgia

Our Festival of Wildlife 2025 takes us on an epic voyage to the South Atlantic, from the Falkland Islands to South Georgia where one of the world's most impressive wildlife spectacles awaits.
