The appearance of gated and walled communities on the outskirts of Buenos Aires constitutes an urban phenomenon of great social relevance. I photograph these walls as geopolitical landforms; frontiers that separate private properties and rank neighbourhoods, harshly altering the urban landscape. Though these walls express distinct traces of what they hide or expose, patterns emerge in the uniformity, where everything becomes alike in their differences. From whichever side I stand, the way of perceiving the world changes through a play of realities. Walking through the outside, I feel the quiet friction of these inflicted boundaries, considering causes and consequences in terms of our social fabric, and I wonder how we are prisoners of our own beliefs. I remark on the interaction between the wall and its situated context through a mirror that reflects what remains outside, searching for an interpretation that goes beyond what we behold. The mirror contains the other dimension which the wall conceals. — Andrea Alkalay -------------------------------------------------
Andrea Alkalay is an Argentinian conceptual photographer living and working out of Buenos Aires. She has participated in lens-based workshops and residency programs, and in 2020 received the SM Pro Art Circle Funding grant. In 2016, Alkalay published Uncertain Nature, a photo book of her journeys while travelling. Her work has been exhibited at: Fine Arts Museum Franklin Rawson (Argentina), Cultural Center San Martin (Argentina), Mundo Nuevo Gallery Art (Argentina), OdA Arte (Argentina), BAphoto 2019 (Argentina), National Museum of RAK (UAE), ArtFest Garzon and Espacio Foto Arte (Uruguay), Cultural Station Mapocho (Chile), ArtMonaco 2015, and Galerie Etienne de Causans (France).

La manera en que vivimos diariamente la ciudad influye en cómo nos paramos en el mundo, cómo pensamos y actuamos políticamente dentro de él. La aparición de barrios cerrados en las afueras de Buenos Aires constituye un fenómeno de gran crecimiento en las últimas décadas. Fotografío los muros como accidentes geográficos urbanos, en la escala peatonal de mi propio circuito. Fronteras que dividen propiedades privadas y jerarquías de vecinos alterando bruscamente el paisaje, la vegetación y reglas radicalmente .

Si bien los paredones se construyen en diferentes tipologías dejando rastros de lo que ocultan o dejan ver, los formatos se repiten en la uniformidad donde todo se parece en sus diferencias. De que lado me paro, cambia la manera de percibir el mundo en un juego de realidades entre los planos. Al caminarlos uno siente la tensión entre lo de adentro y lo de afuera, considerando causas y consecuencias en términos del tejido social y me pregunto hasta qué punto somos prisioneros de nuestras propias creencias. Observo la interacción entre la pared y el contexto a través de un espejo que refleja aquello de lo que nos separamos o protegemos. Andrea Alkalay, egresada de la Carrera de Diseño Industrial (UBA), es artista conceptual argentina que trabaja con fotografía. Ha participado en talleres y clínicas de obra donde aprendió técnicas alternativas. Autora del libro Naturaleza incienta publicado en 2016. Su trabajo es exhibido internacionalmente recibiendo premios: Sienna Creative Award 2020, Tifa 2019 (JP), Primer Premio Pilará (AR), Premio Arte x Arte (AR), mejor Portfolio Festival de la Luz (AR), Mención de honor. PremioTRESy3 (VE), FINI Festival (MX), IPA 2017. Participa en la 8th Bienal de Fotografía de Tucumán 2018 (AR), Exhibió su trabajo en el Museo de Bellas Artes Franklin Rawson (AR), Centro Cultural San Martín (AR), Museo Nacional de RAK (UAE), ArtFest Garzon, Galería Espacio Foto Arte (UY), Estación Cultural Mapocho (CL). Vive y trabaja en buenos Aires.
