Rosanne Fortier News Correspondent Children were able to see Santa Claus, the Grinch, Mayor of Vegreville, Tim MacPhee, and their crew when the Santa Claus Tour went through Vegreville neighbourhoods on December 22 and 23.

People stayed at their doorsteps

or front doors as they greeted Santa Claus, his helpers, and crew.

Anya Langkow, Tourism, Recreation and Culture Coordinator for Vegreville, said this event was a partnership between the Town of Vegreville, Vegreville & District Chamber of Commerce, Vegreville Fire Department, Country 106.5, along with Vegreville Municipal

Enforcement and Vegreville RCMP. “We hosted the Santa Claus Tour because we wanted to bring Christmas cheer and holiday spirit to the community,” Langkow said.

When I asked how the event turned out overall, Langkow said, “It was a wonderful success with much gratitude expressed by our residents.”

RCMP files from December 21 - 27 Arthur Beaudette News Advertiser December 21 00:10 – Curfew check conducted on a 34 year old male on conditions. The male was not home in breach of his release order. He is currently at large on warrants.

12:56 – Report of a verbal argument between two houseguests. One party believed the other was cheating over Facebook. One of the involved parties left the home and no further assistance was needed.

18:46 – Report from a Mundare business about a male subject who entered the business and was asked to leave because they were not wearing a mask.

The male left and then proceeded to bang on the windows and cause a disturbance.

Members attended and arrested the 49 year old male for failing to comply with his release order (2 counts). He was lodged until sober and then released with additional documents for court related to breaching conditions.

21:33 – Call from a parent whose adult child comes to their home while under the influence and causes a disturbance. The parent refuses to press charges. Filed for information. *** recurring call from this client.

December 22 06:27 – Report of a break and enter to a government building in Mundare. A door was pried open and tools were taken. CCTV is being reviewed and the investigation is ongoing.

21:20 – Report of a verbally aggressive male at a Vegreville residence. Members attended and located the male subject who was taken into custody and lodged in cells until sober.

December 23 08:28 – Report of an attempted theft of a vehicle in Vegreville. Suspects broke into the vehicle and damaged it in an attempt to steal it. Several items were also taken from the vehicle.

09:27 – Report of a hit and run at a Vegreville business. After returning to his vehicle after shopping, the complainant noted his running board, driver’s door and fender were damaged.

19:13 – Request by EMS to assist at scene where they were called to assist a male in a possible overdose at a residence in Vegreville. Members attended to assist EMS and the male was taken to hospital for further treatment.

22:10 – Report of damage to a door at a Vegreville Lodging establishment.

The tenant stated that a friend tried to get into the room damaging the door.

The tenant stated that the friend did not gain access to the room but would not provide a name of the subject.

Members were unable to pursue the matter further.

December 24

16:14 – While conducting curfew checks on habitual offenders, members determined that a 36 year old female was not at home under her 24 hour, court imposed curfew conditions. The subject was charged for breach of conditions, located and apprehended and then released with additional documents for court.

21:02 – Information from the public was received about a 44 year old male who was believed to have arrest warrants and is located in Vegreville.

Members investigated and it was determined that the subject of the information did NOT have any active warrants. *** Merry Christmas?

December 26

12:53 – Call from neighbours to report a possible break and enter to a home near Ranfurly. The lights are on and doors are open but the homeowner is known to be away. Members attended and confirmed the residence had been broken into. A scene examination was conducted and the investigation is ongoing.

19:09 – Call received about a promotional item from a company which was delivered to the complainant’s previous address. Records from the company indicate that the item was shipped on November 11. Tracking showed that the current tenant signed for the item and now denies having possession.

Members spoke to the current tenant who does not have recollection of the transaction. The complainant did not want to pursue charges.

December 27

00:21 – While doing curfew checks,

members discovered a male at a Vegreville residence who was known to be on curfew conditions and was not at the residence defined in court orders.

Members arrested the male who was later released with additional documents for court.

02:28 – Members received a disturbance call at a residence in Mundare.

Members attended and located two individuals who were both intoxicated and arguing over who broke the television. There were no threats or violence and members mediated the situation and the residents were able to carry on with their night.

10:27 – Traffic enforcement in the area resulting in approximately 4 speeding tickets as well as a ticket for speedometer not working.

12:39 – Traffic stop conducted on Hwy 857 near Vegreville. The vehicle failed to obey the stop sign. This resulted in a ticket with a $405 voluntary penalty. The driver was also charged with driving without a driver’s license. This carry’s a mandatory court appearance.

15:45 – Report of a 31 year old, intoxicated male who was causing a disturbance at a Vegreville residence.

Members attended and found the male in the home, intoxicated and yelling at his mother and members. The subject attempted to run from members and was apprehended. The subject was lodged in cells until sober.

16:10 – While on patrol members located an abandoned vehicle on Hwy 16 near Lavoy. Members confirmed that the vehicle had been stolen out of Calgary and abandoned on the highway. The vehicle was recovered, and Calgary Police Services was notified.

16:26 – Report of a break and enter to a residence in rural Lamont County.

Under investigation.

23:18 – Report of mischief.

Complainant reports that a 25 year old female known to known to them entered the property and proceeded to strike a car, fence and door (possibly with a chair) resulting in damage. Members attended, located the female and arrested her. She was later released with documents for court.

During the week there were 67 calls for service made in total including: 0 false alarms, 0 false 911s, 0 animal strikes, 3 wellbeing checks, 1 call under the Mental Health Act and approximately 13 tickets from traffic enforcement.

New Home for Ambulance Service in Vegreville Michelle Pinon News Advertiser Alberta Health Services has moved its Emergency Medical Services to a new station in Vegreville.

The move to its new facility, located at Birch Avenue and 53 Street, took place during the past week.

“The move was required as the current Emergency Services building is filled to capacity and fire services requires additional space,” stated Erin Lawrence, Senior Communications Advisor with Alberta Health Services EMS. “The relocation will not affect EMS response to emergencies nor will it affect the excellent working relationship between the fire department and EMS. This facility move will allow for any future growth for both departments.”

She went on to say, “AHS EMS is thankful to the Town of Vegreville for accommodating our previous lease at the Emergency Services Building and looks forward to a continued strong working relationship with the town.”

The coverage area includes both the Town of Vegreville and surrounding area.

Lawrence said, “AHS oversees the delivery of all ambulance service in the province, both via direct delivery and through contracted service providers.”

Renovations and improvements have been completed by the landlord, and Lawrence said the bay area will store all three frontline ambulances, a spare ambulance, and the supervisor vehicle. There could be up to six staff there during the day plus a supervisor and four staff at night. She added, “The new facility has good overall access to residential areas as well as the local hospital and access to a major highway in the area.”

Looking Forward Arthur Beaudette News Advertiser - Opinion Time to bid farewell. Most of us would agree that we are happy to see 2020 in the rearview mirror. In a few days, we will be settling into a new year and trying to ensure we put 2021 on everything from cheques, (yes people still use those), to online forms and various documents.

In October our PM Justin Trudeau spoke about the pandemic and stated that it “really sucks”, the same feeling holds true for many people about 2020. The new year is more symbolic than anything, but it offers us the opportunity to “turn the page” so to speak, and start fresh.

At the same time, it is important to not forget the lessons we have learned from 2020. Spanish writer and philosopher George Santayana is credited with the famous quote, “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.”

All too often people have short memories and quickly forget days gone by.

Are we ready for change or do we want more of the same?

Perhaps we are so tired that we are willing to accept scandals, corruption, and “ justice” that is not very just.

Looking back, we have lots to think about. Government scandals, deep divisions in many countries, negative oil prices that hit Canada, and especially Alberta hard, and of course COVID-19. We also have massive government debts

across the globe, continued conflicts, and the existential crisis of climate change. Only some of the things we look back on are within our control. Others are extensions of our broader choices and then there’s the group under the heading “stuff happens.”

It’s not all doom and gloom though. We had some amazing things happen this past calendar year. Science and technology made for some great news. We saw SpaceX reuse rockets multiple times and send astronauts to the International Space Station from American soil for the first time since 2011. It was also the first commercial spacecraft to carry astronauts from American soil. We have had significant advancements in both solar panel technology and hydrogen production and Toyota announced a solid-state battery for electric vehicles. Quantum computing, quantum teleportation, AI, and other crazy things are on the list as well. I could fill pages with all the scientific advancements made.

Of course, with all the negatives that came with COVID, we also see some positives. We see a world band together to work on vaccine research. We see a newfound (for some) appreciation of family and those most vulnerable. We also have a renewed appreciation for front line workers of all types as well as local businesses. We saw many leaders on different levels step up and take action. Some of these in government, others in healthcare and some are your friends and neighbours.

2021 is really just a different number on a calendar. For those who need a calendar to make changes, there will be New Years Resolutions, (most of which won’t last a week). We do have a number of things that are almost guaranteed. We know we will pay more in carbon taxes, we know we will have to start thinking of how on earth all this debt will be paid, and we know COVID won’t magically disappear at 00:01 on January 1, 2021. Yes, masks at the very least, will be with us for a while longer.

For the things within our control, we do have an opportunity to make 2021 different and hopefully better than 2020.

The easiest of those things is to simply be a better person. We can talk to our neighbours, check in on friends and relatives and think (sometimes twice) before we speak. We can consider the views of others and encourage healthy debate rather than condemning those who think differently than us.

We can change our spending habits to not only support the businesses that support our communities but also consider how that spending affects our world in different ways. We can waste less and give more. For some, that means giving money when able and for others, giving time when available.

2021 is just another day on the calendar. We should remember the past without dwelling on it and look forward.

As has been said many times before... We are the change that we seek. Let’s be better in 2021.

90 Years Ago – December 31, 1930

J.M. Danyluk has opened an electric shop on Main Street in Andrew this week and will carry a full line of electrical appliances and do all kinds of electric wiring.

The Minburn rink is now ready for skating. An electric motor has been purchased for flooding and several new lights have been installed. Kenneth Myers is manager for the season.

The recent delivery of wheat, direct to the bank that dad seized it, by a Willingdon farmer recalls another incident in Vegreville some years ago. A venerable citizen of Two Hills had left a hand bag in one of the Vegreville bank offices. The bank staff confiscated the contents, and substituted for them a quantity of oats.

The substitution was discovered by the owner of the hand bag before he left the bank, and in his righteous wrath he returned the bank its oats with strange and lurid maledictions not altogether becoming to his age and dignity.

The Duvernay-Brosseau bridge will be of great benefit, particularly to the farmers of the Brosseau district, who haul their grain southward, and who, in the busy seasons, sometimes had to wait for hours to cross.

75 Years Ago - January 2, 1946

Service personnel returning to Innisfree from overseas for the New Year are; Pte. W.J. Fisher and Pte. H. R. Boorse.

Cpl. Donald Rattray, RCA, has returned to Lavoy after five years’ service in England, Sicily, Italy, Holland, Belgium, Germany and France. He wears a wound stripe as the result of an injury suffered in the Sicilian campaign. Two other members in uniform of the family now home on leave are Pte. Douglas Rattray and Wren Genevieve Rattray. Others on leave in Lavoy include; Pte. Harold Suddaby, L.-Bdr. George Shewchuk and Pte. John Minkensky.

Friends of Capt. L.B. Yule will be gratified to know that his good service in the army resulted in his being accorded the distinction of Member of the Order of the British Empire, M.B.E. Capt. Yule was the first superintendent of Vegreville School Division No. 19, and under his charge the Division was efficiently organized.

The Alberta Hotel has employed a new chef in the person of Paul Harrington, who is an “Irish-Canadian” of long experience. He has followed his occupation in Eastern Canada for the past fifteen years and among other places where he displayed his art.

50 Years Ago – December 31, 1970

The committee of Jaycees participating in the annual Community Christmas Light-up program in Vegreville announced the winners: Best Lighting – Dr. J. Lukenchuk; Best Santa Claus – Lawton Westrom; Best Nativity Scene – Willian Skitch; Non-Commercial – St. John Lutheran Church.

The Vegreville Branch, Royal Canadian Legion, bestowed a life membership on a twenty-five year member, Charlie Langpap, at a recent meeting. Charlie has been active in the Legion since his discharge from the army in 1945 and is the only member in 1970 to attain the anniversary.

“Santa’s Helpers” brought some joy to 14 families in Vegreville at Christmas time when they gathered at the Co-op Store to prepare hampers for delivery Christmas Eve. The community effort included representatives of the churches in the good works and a committee comprising: Father Dobbin, Rev. Seal, Mrs. R. Cairns, Mrs. C. Fried, Miss Gail Ruddick, Ernie Kulmatycki, Don Jumage and Mrs. N. Hantiuk who prepared the hampers.

Dr. Francis Schulte completed his studies in Toronto last week and travelled by home to Vegreville to take up his practice.

25 Years Ago – January 2, 1996

Kim Dyer and Katie Wilson were two of 55 participants who walked or ran in the AGT fun run. The four kilometer event raised just over $2600 from pledges and donations for the Vegreville Christmas Bureau, bringing the eight year total to over $11,200.

The oldest participant braving the cold at 6:30 in the morning was 64 year old Bill Skitch while the youngest was A.J. Jones, 10.

In early December, the Hairy Hill Fire Department donated $100 to the Hillside Lodge in Two Hills. The money will be spent on residents for their enjoyment.

The Vegreville Minor Baseball Association received a $3200 grant from the Alberta Sport Recreation Parks and Wildlife Foundation.

The grant was for upgrading the existing baseball diamonds at the Riverview Ball Park.

At a Christmas CNIB banquet for the visually impaired, sponsored by the Vegreville Lions Club, Hugh McCarty, fund development manager of the Alberta northwest division, received a cheque for $5,308.73.

Callee Soltys, who graduated from Two Hills High School last year, has been awarded $1209 for an Academic Scholarship at Augustana University College. She is in her first year, taking her Bachelor of Science.

Health-Care Wait Times In Canada Hit Record High In 2020 Bacchus Barua and Mackenzie Moir The Fraser Institute As we continue our battle against COVID-19, another separate health-care crisis rages on. Wait times. Patients in Canada face the longest wait time for elective surgery on record – 22.6 weeks (between referral from a family doctor to receipt of medically necessary treatment).

Of course, the pandemic and the pre-emptive cancellations of procedures have influenced this historic median wait time. However, it’s also the result of decades of policy inertia and disregard for international data.

Despite the name, elective surgery does not usually refer to optional treatment, but rather scheduled or planned treatment (in contrast to emergencies). These include hip and knee surgeries and scheduled neurosurgery and cardiovascular procedures.

To document the extent of delays for patients in need of these treatments, researchers – for almost three decades—consistently surveyed physicians across 12 specialties in Canada. This year’s national wait time (again, 22.6 weeks compared to 20.9 weeks last year) is not just the longest on record but is more than twice as long as the 9.3 weeks Canadians waited in 1993 when the first national estimates were calculated.

Physicians in Nova Scotia (43.8 weeks), Alberta (29.4 weeks), and Ontario (17.4 weeks) each reported the longest wait times on record in their respective provinces. Meanwhile, patients across the country could expect to wait more than eight months for ophthalmology and otolaryngology (ENT) treatments. It should come as no surprise that physicians routinely report their patients wait longer than clinically reasonable.

It would be easy to blame these current wait times on COVID. And yes, patients are likely waiting longer this year than they would have otherwise.

Unfortunately, decades of pre-COVID data tell the same story – wait times in Canada are not just long but have gotten progressively longer. The survey’s lower response rate this year (11 percent) invites caution when interpreting its results. But again, it would be a mistake to ignore the 1,258 physicians who did respond this year and clearly indicated their patients wait longer than clinically reasonable.

Other comprehensive international surveys have also documented Canada’s failure to tackle wait times. According to the Commonwealth Fund, 18 percent of patients in Canada reported waiting four months or longer for elective surgery compared to Switzerland (six percent) and Germany (0 percent). And that’s in 2016, long before the pandemic began.

So what’s to be done?

While today’s priority is to combat COVID and support health-care workers, we should also use this opportunity to study other universal healthcare models and plan for the future.

While just about every country around the world has been affected by COVID, many will return to a very different “normal” compared to Canada. Specifically, universal health-care countries such as Switzerland, the Netherlands, Germany, and Australia will likely return to much shorter wait times than Canadians routinely face.

Our policymakers should understand how these countries have formed partnerships with the private sector to tackle wait times and better deliver universal health care. Brian Sharun’s Wintery Wonderland

Mundare area resident Brian Sharun has created a magical winter wonderland in his front yard which has been a popular destination during the Christmas holidays.

Michelle Pinon News Advertiser For the past 23 years, Mundare area resident Brian Sharun has been creating Christmas decorations out of sheet metal.

He has more than 20 handcrafted sheet metal decorations in his front yard. Each one of them is outlined with either rope or LED lights and can be seen from miles away from Highway 16 or Highway 15 by motorists.

This year he added a snow globe, and a cowboy boot, hat, and cactus to his collection. Every year he also raises funds for charity. Some of the previous recipients have included the Stollery Children’s Hospital, STARS as well as the local food bank.

This year he is raising funds for the Mundare Fire Department to purchase a commercial pressure washer.

The first decoration he made was of a snowman.

He sold it to Mundare resident Elsie Andruchow, who donated it back to him last year. Brian has already started on a couple of new decorations for next year. It is a labour of love for him and he is happy to bring some Christmas cheer to one and all.

The farm is located one mile west of Highway 16 or south of Highway 15 on Range Road 170. He plans to keep the decorations up until Ukrainian Christmas on January 7.

Town of Mundare to Receive Infrastructure Funding Michelle Pinon News Advertiser The Town of Mundare will be receiving just over $71,000 in funding from the provincial government to complete an infrastructure project in the community.

Tracy Allard, Alberta’s Minister of Municipal Affairs, officially notified the town in writing that it had accepted the town’s proposal for a sidewalk.

Colin Zyla, Chief Administrative Officer for the Town of Mundare, said the project would include the placement of a sidewalk from Highway 855 to 50 Avenue.

“It will enhance the safety of residents who live south of Highway 855 who walk downtown. The project was select-

ed as it could be financed under the grant program and could be completed in 2021,” explained Zyla.

The funding for the project is through the Province’s Municipal Stimulus Program, (MSP). Minister Allard stated in her letter, “The MSP will help your community recover from the economic challenges posed by the pandemic and the downturn in energy prices. It also positions communities to support local jobs and participate in future economic growth.

Michelle Pinon News Advertiser Members of the Tofield Fire Department brought smiles, laughter, and cheer to people young and old during their Santa Claus Tour on December 20.

The event was well received and helped people feel like it was Christmas again as they travelled up and down the streets of town. The volunteer firefighters made sure to drive by the hospital and lodges for seniors and staff to get a glimpse of Old St. Nick and Sparky.

Captain Devan McCharles said they hooked up a PA system to one of their units and blasted out Christmas tunes while driving through the community for two hours during the afternoon.

Santa had his own wireless microphone and he called out many of the children’s names asking if they had been good

this year. In response, Santa got an earful from the kids who shouted back to him what they wanted for Christmas.

“It was a lot of fun,” said McCharles.

Many people said it was hard to see Santa this year so this was a great way for the kids to talk to him. Several people asked if they’d be doing this again next year, but McCharles said it all depends on the situation. Normally, they participate in the Winterfest Parade, to kick-off the holiday season.

MLA Update - CONTINUED from PAGE 15 I am joining my colleagues and the Alberta government in condemning Prime Minister Trudeau on his broken promise and plan to increase the consumer carbon tax to $170 a tonne by 2030. This translates to an increase of 467 percent in order to meet this goal.

This is devastating news to an already hurting economy. As a result of this increase, 100,000 jobs could be lost across all sectors and will cause an increase in our everyday living expenses. Our government is successfully working with industry on emission management without implementing a consumer carbon tax. Ultimately, we are all on team Alberta.

On December 14th, Alberta’s government launched the Municipal Measurement Index to improve local decision-making and help Albertans see how local governments are spending their money. This tool allows Albertans to view, explore, and compare financial and statistical information, including property tax rates, major revenue and expenses, and debt values for all of Alberta’s 338 municipalities.

Along with the measurement index, Financial Indicator Graphs have also been launched to track municipalities’ performance and trends over time. Allowing the public to access this information will be important in increasing transparency for municipal governments and Albertans.

During these challenging times, one of the best ways we can support our fellow Albertans is to support their small businesses. Rudyk went on to introduce Michael Voll, Lead Pastor for North Pointe Community Church in Edmonton who was the guest speaker. Voll’s young wife, Sheri was killed in an automobile accident on December 1, 2001.

Voll said when you have lost someone you loved, Christmas time can be almost unbearable. “I know loss first hand. My wife and I didn’t have a lot of money but we had a lot of love and we were looking forward to the future.

Then on December 1, 2001, all those dreams came crashing down. We were on our way to Kelowna when life changed for us. The vehicle we were driving in, hit some black ice and my wife died on that roadside. My life and dreams also died on that roadside. I didn’t know what the future was going to hold for me; there were days of denial, there were days of anger and depression, and there was shock.

I was so thankful that I had family around me who loved me through it all. I had

Rosanne Fortier News Correspondent Akasu Palliative Care Society 21st Annual Christmas Candlelight Interdenominational Service of Remembrance was offered through a virtual service at Park Memorial website and YouTube, as well as, broadcasted on Country 106.5 FM on December 13.

Ardythe Butler, Incoming President of Akasu Palliative Care Society, welcomed everyone. “This service is a time for reflection, comfort, and memories. Christmas is often a difficult time when faced with loss whether it is the first Christmas without someone or remembering someone gone long ago?

“Akasu Palliative Care is grateful for the usage of North Pointe Community Church and the technical work of Calvin Sommerville, Pastor of North Pointe Church in Vegreville for making this time of sharing together both virtually and on our local radio station possible,” Butler said.

Voila Braun-Fox, Past President of Akasu Palliative Care Society, then lighted candles in memory of loved ones.

Pastor Sommerville continued by leading people with a prayer.

born baby girl with my family in Bruce, Alberta. Our family in Bruce were so excited we were coming and they would get to see our new baby and celebrate Christmas together as the previous Christmas we were unable to go home as Mike, my husband had to work.

The baby was fussy for the first few days before we were supposed to leave but she had a milk allergy and it didn’t take much to upset her stomach. But as the day went by, our baby was getting sicker and sicker so we went to the hospital.

The doctor saw her and admitted her into the hospital where she had to be on intravenous therapy as dehydration had started. So, that was it; we won’t going to go anywhere for Christmas. We spent Christmas at the hospital but the staff was my co-workers and they were very kind and they encouraged us to go home for a few hours here and there.

Forty years ago, there were no convenience stores open on Christmas Day so we feasted on toast with a delectable cheese slice and a cup of tea. For dessert, I found a tin of peaches. We opened the gifts we received but I had hidden

By New Years Day, the baby was back home and doing well. Though it was not the Christmas anyone would want, we survived. We have often reminisced about that Christmas where there was no food, no gifts, a sick baby, and no friends (didn’t want to bother them) with only a telephone to communicate with, but we survived and still have a smile about that Christmas. She ripped open all her presents with so much excitement. Watching her face light is always priceless.
