Ask the Guys Dear Classified Guys, There's nothing I'd like more this year than a job offer in my stocking! I've been looking for employment for the past few weeks and have found a few promising leads despite the economy. However, when I tell my friends and family of my hopes for a fresh start by the new year, they say I'm crazy. They keep telling me that I should just give up until after the holidays, since no one hires this time of year. They say that between the holiday vacations, company Christmas parties and the fact that even the most diligent employees have holiday shopping on their minds, companies won't hire anyone until January. I want to disagree, but they make a compelling case. Am I on the right track by moving forward or should I just wait and spend the holidays with my friends and family?

Carry: Your friends and family

don't seem to be keeping with the holiday spirit. In fact, they sound a little more like Scrooge! Although they may have good intentions, they should be helping you maintain a positive attitude while you look for a new job.

Cash: With today's job market, you have to keep trying regardless of the time of year. And a positive attitude will not only keep you going, but will project itself when you are interviewing with potential employers. Carry: Surprisingly, the end of the year can work to your advantage with some companies. Many managers need to meet deadlines for filling positions and use up budgeted money before the new year and a new budget begins. Cash: Also, if companies have a need for a new employee, it doesn't matter whether it's December or January. In fact, hiring around this time of year may be preferred, since it allows new people to settle in before the work-

For many stores and companies, the holiday season means more business. As companies prepare for "Black Friday" and the end of the year, the number of required employees increase for most retail stores. With about 49,000 malls and shopping centers nationwide, this translates to a lot of jobs. The retail industry typically employs about 1.7 million people, but can add another 215,000 through the holidays. That's a 13% increase in retail jobs. For some that makes for a very merry season!

I work at a small butcher shop after school and on weekends. Although the job is okay, my boss is a little less than honest. A woman came in looking for a large roast beef. My boss picked up our last one and weighed it at 3.7 pounds, but the woman asked for a larger one. After pausing for a moment, he then took the roast beef into our large walk-in refrigerator. He emerged with the same piece and again put it on the scale. This time he pressed down with his thumb so the piece weighed 4.8 pounds. When the woman replied, "Great", my boss gave me a sly wink knowing he just made a few extra bucks. However to his surprise, the woman added, "I'll take both of them." (Thanks to Jeremy S.)

Coming to Town Every job requires the right person to make it work and playing Santa Claus is no different. A recent survey of some 1300 realbearded Santa's found many commonalities among these jolly fellows. The average Santa is 59 years old and weighs in at around 254 pounds. However, they also share more than just physical appearance. An average Santa works about 36 days per year in their red suit, sees about 2700 children during the season and has been a Santa for more than 12 years. •

You may find it difficult to get in touch with people, so be patient. Cash: It's important you stay on top of all your leads and keep your resumes circulating. Michelle Pinon News Advertiser Members of the Tofield Fire Department brought smiles, laughter, and cheer to people young and old during their Santa Claus Tour on December 20. The event was well received and helped people feel like it was Christmas again as they travelled up and down the streets of town. The volunteer firefighters made sure to drive by the hospital and lodges for seniors and staff to get a glimpse of Old St. Nick and Sparky. Captain Devan McCharles said they hooked up a PA system to one of their units and blasted out Christmas tunes while driving through the community for two hours during the afternoon. Santa had his own wireless microphone and he called out many of the children’s names asking if they had been good

this year. In response, Santa got an earful from the kids who shouted back to him what they wanted for Christmas. “It was a lot of fun,” said McCharles. Many people said it was hard to see Santa this year so this was a great way for the kids to talk to him. Several people asked if they’d be doing this again next year, but McCharles said it all depends on the situation. Normally, they participate in the Winterfest Parade, to kick-off the holiday season. McCharles said members who participated and helped to make the event come together include: Asst. Chief Lynn Lebirk, Asst. Chief Scott Langille, Lieutenant Norm Martineau, Lieutenant Bill Fawcett, Firefighter Dan Hillyer, Firefighter Brandon Ray, Firefighter Krysten Fawcett, Firefighter Dave Ferguson, and Firefighter Stephan Wuthrich.
