Vegreville Composite High School Submitted Vegreville Composite High staff, students and families were excited to celebrate the graduation ceremony. We were especially thrilled to be able to host the event as a group with over 300 in attendance. Students celebrated with a long standing tradition of two passes across the stage. Coming out of two years of individualized ceremonies we recognized the opportunity to have a more personalized ceremony and created a new tradition of allowing students to choose who would move their tassel, signifying the graduation threshold. We were incredibly proud of this group of individuals and wish them all the best as they venture off into the next chapter of their lives. Congratulations VCHS grads of 2022, we are so proud of you.

Company Spokesman Matt Epting told the Vegreville News Advertiser that approximately 250 construction workers will be involved in the project that is expected to be completed by the end of this year. Epting stated that, “Grizzly Bear Creek is a 152-megawatt project which will consist of 34 turbines that are expected to generate 528 GWh of energy each year, enough to avoid 343,000 tons of CO2 emissions and meet the electricity needs of over 73,000 Alberta households annually. Energy from the plant will be sold on a merchant basis into Alberta’s electricity market. “Grizzly Bear Creek will add diversity to the robust energy sec-
tor that serves as the backbone of Alberta’s economy,” said Paolo Romanacci, Head of Enel Green Power in the US and Canada. “Enel Green Power has proudly powered the homes and businesses of tens of thousands of Albertans with clean renewable power, which helps make power more affordable and helps Canada meet its ambitious sustainability goals. After more than a decade of serving Albertans, we’re excited to keep building with our next major investment in the province.” The company said the project will create around seven full-time, permanent jobs for operations and maintenance. Grizzly Bear Creek represents a reliable long-term economic stimulus for the counties of Minburn and Vermilion River. Over the project’s 30-year lifetime it will pay landowners for the use of their lands and generate over $80 million in local tax revenues. The company’s news release also stated that, “Enel Green Power
invests in the long-term sustainability of its host communities, identifying opportunities to support local partners in creating shared value. As part of its response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the company provided $20,000 in relief funds to social services agencies in Pincher Creek and the Piikani Nation. The company also provided additional funds to support food security and economic development through the Vegreville Food Bank.” Jackie Armstrong Homeniuk, MLA for Fort SaskatchewanVegreville MLA Jackie Armstrong-Homeniuk stated, “Every single day, our government is working hard to diversify and grow our economy. Our plan is working and we want to make sure that every Albertan can benefit from our momentum. News Advertiser – Opinion Maybe you have been feeling progressively more irritable. Or maybe you have noticed that in general, people are not as friendly as you once remember. It’s possible you even work in a position where you deal with people in person or on the phone in your daily routine. We may think of a number of possible reasons for all of this tension. It could be the seemingly endless spending by our federal government along with the message to drive less and wear more sweaters in the winter. COVID and everything related to the pandemic surely has put a damper on our moods and as if that wasn’t enough, now we have to worry about monkey pox. Most recently we are dealing with what looks to be runaway inflation starting with gasoline prices and continuing on through to our grocery bill. None of what I just mentioned can be discounted, but many researchers think there’s something different at play, and they have the numbers to prove it. Social media and the algorithms that drive these platforms. What are social media algorithms? Simply put, Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, TikTok and other social media platforms

are ad-funded and algorithms determine what content and advertising to deliver users based on the user’s individual behavior. If you want to see how this works, think of the polar opposite to your likings. If you are really into sports and fishing, spend 15 minutes looking up information (or even better commenting) on ballet and classical music. If you like high tech, maybe you can go down the path of roughing it, living off the grid and survival. It won’t take long for you to start getting not only advertising but even group suggestions pertaining to these things. While 15 minutes will give you a taste, most research suggests that the average algorithm gathers about 2 hours before profiling you and steering you to certain content or serving you particular ads that are “relevant” to you. That all seems very tame, so how can it be making us more irritable? Well, looking towards the dark side of the way social media works provides for more insight. First of all, social media is designed to be addictive. An endless supply of likes, re-posts, comments and notifications keeps many glued to their feed like a thirsty person in the desert to their water. A 2018 study conducted by researchers at Harvard found that validation from likes on social media stimulates the brain similar to how cocaine does, just not as intensely. Part of the result of the “death scroll” (endless scrolling) is the associated search for validation and approval. When this is lacking, many people feel they themselves are somehow lacking and can become depressed or feel less satisfied. Since we all see how a sharp retort or even outright bullying can increase clicks and even a negative response is validation, this can lead to ever increasing bad behaviour. Just look at Canadian Parliament. If you objectively view any message board or social media group you will see that negative comments get the most response. Try jumping into a heated argument and tell everyone to have a nice day and see how that goes. Negativity rules and that is the way of social media. Drop into any “rant and rave” or “beefs and bouquets” group and the negative will likely outnumber the positive 10:1. These algorithms also intentionally steer users into a selffeeding loop or echo chambers. After all, if you are against vaccines, why would they steer you to information from scientists who show their side of the argument FOR vaccines. The same goes for the opposite. If you firmly believe in vaccines and masks, why would the system send you to information on valid research or scientists who argue against these views. You might just stop clicking and seeing the ads. A study by researchers at Princeton University found that people who merely consumed news had feeds that remained mixed while users consistently reacted and shared items, they progressively became isolated with views that aligned with their own. It has been said many times that the great part about social media is that everyone has a voice and similarly, the worst part about social media is that everyone has a voice. Now log off, put down the phone, enjoy some weather be it sunny or rainy and… have a nice day!

Viewpoint – High and Hidden Taxes driving up the Pump Price Franco Terrazzano Canadian Taxpayers Federation
As far as Canadian politicians are concerned, the soaring cost of living is like winter slush, summer mosquitos and other unfortunate forces of nature. They would love to help, but what can they do? Here’s an idea: our politicians just need to follow the lead of other countries and cut the stack of hidden taxes they charge at the gas pumps. Canadian drivers pay six different taxes in some major cities. For example, Montreal drivers pay provincial and federal gas taxes, provincial and federal sales taxes, a transit tax and a carbon tax. Drivers in Vancouver, where taxes account for 38 per cent of the pump price, also pay six different taxes. With taxes accounting for more than 55 cents per litre of gasoline on average, a family pays about $40 in taxes to fill their minivan. That’s a lot of money that could help pay for groceries or baseball cleats for the kids. The federal government and some provinces charge sales tax on top of other taxes. That means politicians tax the fuel you need to drive, then they tax those taxes. This tax-on-tax adds more than four cents to the average pump price. Provincial politicians can provide relief today by following Alberta’s example, which cut its 13 cent per litre fuel tax. “While the inflation rate nationally rose in April, the rate declined in Alberta,” said University of Calgary economist Trevor Tombe. “Falling gasoline prices because of the tax holiday is the reason.” The feds could immediately provide similar relief. Conservative Party leadership candidate Pierre Poilievre’s proposal to scrap the carbon tax and suspend the federal fuel and sales taxes on gasoline would save an Ontario family $20 every time they fill their minivan. The big tax bill Canadians pay at the pumps is about to get worse.
The federal carbon tax has increased three times during the pandemic, and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says he will keep cranking up the carbon tax until it reaches nearly 40 cents per litre in 2030. While the Trudeau government claims that “families are going to be better off” due to its carbon tax and rebate, the Parliamentary Budget Officer shows these politicians are using magic math. Even at the low end, including the rebate, the PBO’s analysis shows that Trudeau’s carbon tax will cost an average family $300 this year, rising to $1,145 in 2030. The Trudeau government is also imposing a second carbon tax through fuel regulations that could add an extra 11 cents per litre of gas by 2030. But even that’s likely a low ball estimate of the actual cost. British Columbia has a second carbon tax that currently costs about 17 cents per litre of gas, helping to make B.C. one of the least affordable places on the planet. And no rebates are coming with the second carbon tax. While Ottawa sticks Canadians with higher tax bills, there’s a laundry list of other countries doing the right thing. The United Kingdom announced $8 billion of fuel tax relief. South Korea cut its gas tax by 30 per cent. Germany is cutting taxes on motor fuels. The Netherlands cut its gas tax by 21 per cent. Italy, Ireland, Israel, India, Peru, Poland, 25 Indian states and union territories, Newfoundland and Labrador, New Jersey and Florida are also cutting gas taxes. Other jurisdictions are cutting more than gas taxes. Italy cut income and business taxes. Spain, France and Austria cut electricity taxes. Sri Lanka is cutting food and medicine taxes. Brazil and Colombia are cutting import taxes. Turkey is cutting taxes on food. South Africa cut business taxes. Croatia cut taxes on energy, sanitation products and food. Greece, Algeria and Albania have also announced tax relief. Other countries are showing it’s possible to cut taxes to help ease the rising cost of living. There is no reason why our politicians can’t cut gas taxes to help Canadians afford their daily needs. Franco Terrazzano is the Federal Director of the Canadian Taxpayers Federation.

County of Minburn to Reclaim 50 Percent of Oiled Roads Michelle Pinon News Advertiser
Even though county council’s decision to reclaim 50 percent of its oiled roads back to gravel in the County of Minburn isn’t a popular one, it will save the municipality well over $2 million in the long run. Chief Administrative Officer Jason Warawa explained that the reclamation process will be a gradual one, and there are no immediate plans to reclaim any of the slated oiled roads in 2022. Warawa said, “These roads will be inspected annually to determine their overall condition and the amount of maintenance required. If an oiled road is holding up and does not require any significant maintenance the reversion back to a gravel road will be deferred.” He also pointed out that, “Once 25 miles of oiled roads are reclaimed back to gravel, there would be annual savings of approximately $150,000 related to reduced road maintenance costs. In addition, there would also be savings of approximately $2.3M for the oil that would no longer need to be applied once every 10 years. As these roads will be reclaimed over several years, the annual savings described will be incrementally realized.” Roads that will return to gravel include: • Township Road 540 (Highway 857 to Range Road 160) • Range Road 143 (Imperial Road) – (Highway 16 to Township Road 510) • Township Road 520 – (Range Road 152 to Range Road 160) • Township Road 534 (Park Grove Road) – (Highway 857 to Range Road 153) • Highway 16RD (Emcon Service Road)
– (Highway 857 to Range Road 144) • Township Road 504 – (Village of Mannville east to Highway 16) Based on the price of oil today, Warawa said the price to oil one mile of road is approximately $95,000. The roads that have been identified under the reclamation program include: A total of 94 residents received letters regarding council’s decision. As well, Warawa said notification was advertised on social media. In terms of feedback, Warawa stated that, “All of the feedback received to date has been in opposition to the decision.” Warawa noted that, the Oiled Roads Policy is a new policy that formalizes the direction that Council has chosen to take. The policy, OP 9002-01 was adopted by council on March 21, 2022. The purpose is: “To provide direction on the County’s long-term oiled road plan and how oiled roads not identified in inventory are returned to gravel.” The policy also stated that, removing oiled roads from inventory shall occur only by resolution of council to amend the policy, and “any roads not included in section 3 of this policy at its time of passing, shall be scheduled for removal in accordance with this policy.” Additionally, “Oiled roads identified for removal shall not receive

Lamont County Submitted Lamont County, Town of Lamont and Fort Saskatchewan & District Chamber of Commerce hosted a pancake breakfast fundraiser on Saturday, June 4. Approximately 500 members of the community attended. Over $12,000 was raised in monetary donations, and numerous physical donations such as emergency and medical aid items, household items and other goods in support of Ukrainians displaced by the war ($12,201 to the Ed Stelmach Foundation, with more online donations still trickling in). “Today we are united in our condemnation of the war,” said Town of Lamont Mayor, Kirk Perrin. “We are united in wanting the war to end and united in raising support. Our Town, our County, our region owes much to its Ukrainian settlers. Their passion and determination are very much rooted in the DNA of our community.” Perrin pointed out that, “With the support of our event sponsor, CENOVUS Energy, 100 percent of the proceeds are going directly to the cause.” “We congratulate everyone for their efforts in raising funds to support humanitarian efforts in Ukraine,” said Trent Zacharias, Director, Community & Indigenous Affairs with Cenovus. “At Cenovus, we were proud to have a small part in this event by providing funding and volunteers. Together we can all make
a difference not only locally, but in a global challenge such as this.” Thank you to other organizations that offered product/services, our many volunteers, and master of ceremonies Cathy Goulet. These all helped contribute to the success of this event! “It is an opportunity for people to contribute to humanitarian aid, the need is increasing weekly; it is staggering the number of people impacted by the war— including those who have left Ukraine and pensioners and others still in Ukraine,” said former Premier Ed Stelmach. “Every dollar makes a difference! The Stelmach Foundation has been sending food and medical supplies to Ukraine and Poland on a regular basis and supporting those in our communities.” “I am extremely pleased with the residents of Lamont County and surrounding areas for the support they continue to show for Ukraine and its people,” said Lamont County Reeve, David Diduck. “I would like to extend a sincere ‘thank you’ to everyone who attended the breakfast and your generous donations to support incoming refugee families. What was raised at the event has a crucial impact.” “It is great to see so many community leaders and community volunteers in Lamont for this event, working for a common cause, standing for Ukraine and raising money to make life easier for

The fundraising event attracted 40 participants who travelled to four other communities in the region. The communities included: Viking, Irma, Wainwright and Vermilion. At each community, they stopped at the Elks Hall to take a break and add to their poker hand. The last stop of the day was the Mannville Gazebo on Main Street where a community supper was held. Rally Chairman Jim Storch was pleased with the turnout as well as the support from several local businesses who sponsored the event.

The last time the event was held was in 2019 due to COVID-19. There were 40 participants at the event in 2019. Storch said proceeds from the event and other fundraisers goes to support other community organizations and projects.

Storch said the Mannville Elks have helped support the school’s hot lunch program, local food bank, reading program and gazebo at the hospital, benches, blankets and flower pots. They have also helped a few families in need. While he’s not sure about the genesis of the rally, he said members were looking for something new, different and exciting to do. Storch said the rally also helps promote the Mannville Elks, Village of Mannville and other small towns along the route. First, second and third place prize winners included: Jim Mead, Murray Headon and Brian Dunn. Consolation prize winners were: Aubrielle Headon, Sam Katic, Richard Headon and Calvin Coulter. Winner of the Irma 50/50 draw was Darcey Bauer.

Ask the Guys Dear Classified Guys, My neighbor recently asked if we wanted to have a multi-family yard sale together. This could have been convenient since we were planning a sale for the same day, except for one dilemma. My neighbor is obnoxious! We would rather give away our things than be forced to spend an entire day with him. Not only would the sale be a disaster, but I know that he would suggest holding it at our house since we have the corner lot. I'd pretend to go on vacation that weekend, but that Saturday is the only day we have available to hold the sale. Any politically correct suggestions on how to get out of this?
• • •
Cash: I take it from
your scenario that your neighbor doesn't know how you feel about him. Carry: It's true what they say; "You can't pick your family or your neighbors." However, you can plan around them. Cash: Personality conflicts are a common problem in neighborhood sales, and families for that matter. However, your situation has a few solutions. Carry: You could be upfront

with your neighbor and tell him how you feel. However, considering you've avoided that conflict for this long, that's probably not a route you'll choose, and probably not the "politically correct" solution you were looking for. Cash: You could cancel your sale, donate your items to charity and go on a long weekend away. But again, possibly not the solution you wanted. Carry: So if you still want to hold your sale and not spend the day with your neighbor, encourage him to hold individual sales on the same day. It's actually much easier for everyone involved, including the customers.
No one will have to worry about tracking finances or mixing up items between families. Cash: To make your day even more successful, consider rallying other neighbors to get involved and turn it into a block sale. Carry: More families means more people to help advertise around town. Plus, garage sale shoppers love to go to one neighborhood that is having multiple sales. Cash: Fortunately you're on the corner lot, so your sale is sure to get high traffic. And who knows, maybe you can sell out by lunchtime and still get away for the weekend.
Fast Facts Charity at Home
Reader Humor Designer Duds
If you've held a large neighborhood sale, you know that not every one of your items may sell by the end of the day. And your neighbors might be in the same situation. However, before everyone starts packing the remaining items back into the already overcrowded garage, consider donating them to a local charity. If you can coordinate your neighbors to gather the items together, many charities will send a truck to pick up your donations.
Last weekend my husband and I stopped at a neighborhood yard sale to see if we could spot any bargains. While I was looking around, my husband sifted through the clothes rack. Later, I found him standing in front of a mirror wearing a navy blue jacket. He pointed to the emblem on the pocket and said "Look honey, it must be a designer label. It has 'FCI' printed on it." I laughed as I turned him around so he could see the back of the jacket in the mirror. He was surprised to see the large yellow print that said, "Federal Correctional Inmate." (Thanks to Martha D.)
Multi-Family Event If you're holding a neighborhood sale, then early birds are almost guaranteed. So rather than get upset when they show up early, just be prepared for them. Set up all your items on tables the night before the sale and keep them in your house or garage. In the morning you can just move them outside and you're done. Besides, if you're set up early enough, you can be the first to shop your neighbor's sales and find a few things for yourself. •

We’ve been in high school for three years, but god, didn’t it feel like thirty? Crazy how time passes slower in a google meet. I’m going to apologize in advance, I can’t promise this speech won’t pass like a math lesson. That said, my name is Jenna. Good afternoon, everyone! I cannot express how grateful I am to be here, just, in general. Both up here speaking on behalf of the graduating class of 2022, as well as being at grad at all. I know even this isn’t what grad used to be, but we really are fortunate to have a ceremony like this at all, all together again. I know everyone was unsure of what our grad ceremony was going to look like, and so it’s nice to know that we’re shifting back towards a degree of normalcy. Although, I can’t really call us as a group “normal”. But who wants to be normal anyhow? This is a point in our lives where a lot of us will branch apart. I don’t know what everyone’s long term life plan is going to be, obviously, but I am confident in saying that a lot of our lives the past few years here are going to stick with us. Even if you don’t remember how to write a critical analytical essay by the time you graduate college, or by the end of this summer. Or by the start of this summer. Or by the English diplomas

deduce the most efficient routes to class in order to not be late. We learned how to cope with and study for three exams and an essay in the same day, and we didn’t do it alone. I’m going to take this moment to thank all the teachers, staff, and guardians both present and absent who helped us get here today. Without your support, most of us probably wouldn’t be the same people we are today. I know I can’t even begin to imagine where I would be without the incredible support you all have given me. I know it’s often said that teachers are under-appreciated as individuals and as a profession, and I couldn’t agree more. No amount of thanks I could give could ever match what I believe you all deserve. School staff play a huge role in the lives and development of teenagers and children, and I want to thank all of you who try to make that the most positive influence you can. It doesn’t go unnoticed. And, to all the teachers who have said we’re their favorite class, a word of advice; leave,

quit while you’re ahead. It doesn’t get better. Anyway, it really is crazy how much of our lives they’ve seen. How much we’ve changed since we met them. We started here as children, just wee little babies. Now we’re slightly taller babies. Some of us are, at least. We’ve changed so much over the past few years, and although you might not see it in yourselves, your classmates do. Your parents do. And, your teachers do. They are all so proud of you for how far you’ve come. I want to ask you all to really consider everything you’ve done over the past few years, all the work you’ve done and everything you’ve overcome. It’s so easy to get washed away with everything in our future lives that we forget to appreciate the things we’ve accomplished already. This is our chance to celebrate those things! You got through it. I am so proud of you all.

VCHS Tribute to the Students My name is Sholayn, and I am the proud parent to this year’s graduates Reagan and Riley Suiter. Thank you for the honour to speak to the Grad class of 2022 on behalf of all the parents. As I reflected on the years it has taken for us all to get to this special day, it was difficult to pick just one thing to focus on in my speech. So, I decided I would impart some of the best parenting advice that I have learned from those who have helped me raise not one but two amazing graduates celebrating here today. First and foremost, if you’re going to do a job, do it well. Doing your best should be a habit and not just an act. Be on time or be early. Making others wait on you indicates

and what you spend your time and energy on. I was at your old school ALH this week and I saw a sign above a door way there and it said “What we see depends on mainly what we look for.” A nice reminder to focus and see the good in all things. When this next phase of your journey feels heavy, (as it undoubtedly will), just stop for a moment. Feel the grass under your feet, the sun on your face and the fresh air around you. Be still, let yourself be, listen and consider your actions. Appreciate the beauty in the struggle, or the pause before deciding which way to turn. Take the time you need to figure out

The key is this - if you hit rock bottom, remember that while you are struggling to get up, rock bottom can also be the foundation from which to grow. And the person who gets up and keeps moving that’s the person who keeps growing. So, don’t be afraid to fail and never give up.
As parents we hope the foundation we have provided is a strong one and that it will be enough. To each of you from all of us; we see you, we appreciate you, and we congratulate you. JACKSON, Bill June 1, 1958 - June 13, 2015 God saw you getting tired And a cure was not to be, So he put his arms around you And whispered, “Come to me”. With tearful eyes we watched you, And saw you pass away, Although we loved you dearly We could not make you stay. Your golden heart stopped beating, Hardworking hands at rest, God broke our hearts to prove to us, He only takes the best. Lovingly remembered and deeply missed, Rachel & family
MOROZIUK, Victoria February 17, 1935 - June 15, 2010 You can only have one mother Patient, kind and true; No other friend in all the world, Will be the same to you. When other friends forsake you, To mother you will return, For all her loving kindness, She asks for nothing in return. As we look upon her picture, Sweet memories we recall, Of a face so full of sunshine, And a smile for one and all. Sweet Jesus, take this message, To our dear mother up above; Tell her how we miss her, And give her all our love. Love from: Cliff, Rebecca & Melanie
Courtney Yakimetz In loving memory of our beautiful Courtney who passed away one year ago on June 14, 2021. I thought of you with love today, but that is nothing new. I thought about you yesterday, and the days before that too. I think of you in silence, I often speak your name. All I have are memories and a picture in a frame. Your memory is a keepsake, with which I’ll never part. God has you in his keeping, I have you in my heart. Forever loved and dearly missed, Mike, Drayson, Dallin, Genevieve, Mom and Rob, Kendall, Ben and family, Robin, Arielle and family Brittiny, Jason and family
Cody Sharun November 22, 2002 - June 14, 2021 Why? It’s a question we ask ourselves every day. It’s a question we can’t bear to say. Why? Did you think this was right? Did you lose the fight? Why? Was the pain too much to take? This decision did you make? Know We think of you a lot. A disappointment you were not. We miss you every day. We count the moments until we can say We love you in every way. Lovingly Remembered & Sadly Missed by Uncle Brian, Aunty Shawna & Cheyenne

CARD OF THANKS UMRYSH, Dennis Richard January 24, 1956 - June 12, 2018 To A Very Special Husband, When God was making husbands as far as I can see, he made a special soulmate, especially for me. He made you compassionate and kind, with more love and affection than you could ever wish to find. He gave my darling husband a heart of solid gold, who gave me wonderful memories, forever to hold. He was someone I could talk to, that no one can replace, he was someone I could laugh with, till tears ran down my face. As the years have passed, I’ve learnt, when someone we love passes, the hardest part is not letting go of whom we have lost, it is finding the strength and courage to move forward without them. Take care my dear, you will never be forgotten and always have a place in my heart. Your wife, Marline

Cody Perry Sharun November 22, 2002 - June 14, 2021 A year already, how could it be when it feels like yesterday was the unbelievable tragic day we lost you forever. We miss you so much Cody. You were always around with your Dad and Uncles, always together. Our fourth man on the farm with a promising future yet to come. Now, we go on without you, which is so difficult some days, a large part of our life is missing. Often we think you’ll be there at the farm, but then reality snaps us back. Nothing is the same without you, yet everything continues on. How we wish we could rewind that horrible Monday. How we wish we knew of your painful struggles that you kept from us all and faced alone. Sometimes we can barely say your name without crying, the pain of losing you still aches in our hearts so much. We are thankful for so many fun memories, though only 18 short years of them. We can only pray that you are in God’s hands and free of the darkness. We believe you are surrounded with love in Heaven by the Angels awaiting you. Cody we miss you and everything about you. Your kind, sweet soul that will be forever young. We will Love you always. Uncle Myron & Aunty Sheila

Response to May 18 Viewpoint After reading Mr. Giesbrecht’s Viewpoint in the May 18 edition I have to respond. I was wondering what he was standing on when he took his view? This pandemic is not a joke. It is real. Mr. Giesbrecht mentions the economic cost and the family stress, but I assume he figured the loss of thousands of lives is not a cost. Just think what would have happened if no measures had been taken? These people that are antivaccine, anti-masking, antieverything, just think of themselves. How greedy can

Village of Andrew Council Reinstates Merwin Haight Michelle Pinon News Advertiser Following an internal investigation by Village of Andrew Interim Chief Administrative Officer, (CAO) Steve Upham Councillor Merwin Haight was reinstated as a member of council during a special meeting on June 1. Mayor Barry Goertz made the motion, “To uphold the eligibility of Deputy Mayor Haight as councillor due to their being no malicious intent and the matter being cleared up as soon as it was brought to the councillor’s attention.” The motion was passed unanimously. The official statement regarding the decision was released by the Village of Andrew. It reads, “After an internal investigation reviewing the banking information pertinent to this issue, we accept the fact there was no malicious intent or deliberate refusal to make full payment of the remaining balance. It was paid in full as soon as the administration forwarded him the remaining balance. The returning officer assured him there were no issue with eligibility upon full payment of the outstanding balance.” Upham said the returning officer was the CAO of the village at the time. As to when Haight was informed of taxes owing, Upham said, “I think the councillor was presented with what was owed some time toward the end of October and then in early in November the funds were transferred. He paid it immediately, but it took some time for the funds to transfer from his account to the village account.” The Vegreville News Advertiser asked that, “If, under the election rules Haight wasn’t eligible to run would he not be disqualified then?” Upham responded by saying, “That will be up to a judge to decide then. We can’t disqualify. It would go to a judge and the judge would make the deci-
sion, make a ruling on it. But the village isn’t in a position to invest that kind of money on something that has a slim likelihood of fixating. Look at case law. I mean case law, you know, the success of those kinds of challenges are never high. When somebody immediately paid the bill as soon as they were ordered to the amount. If somebody continues to say, well, I’m not paying, then that’s a whole different thing, right.” At the May 25 council meeting, Chris Lupul challenged Haight’s eligibility for nomination. He stated at the time that he overheard a conversation at the village office shortly after the election regarding arrears in property taxes about the councillor in question. Lupul said he contacted Municipal Affairs, (MA) and his legal counsel after researching the Local Authorities Election Act, (LAEA). He said that according to the legal affidavit that all councillors have signed upon nomination, it is an offence to sign a false affidavit or a form that contains a false statement. “Candidates also have to solemnly swear and affirm they are not otherwise disqualified under Section 22 or 23 of the LAEA.” He went on to say that, “According to the LAEA, Section 22 ineligibility for nomination. No one is eligible to become a candidate under any of the following circumstances: If your property taxes are more than $50 in arrears, excluding indebtedness on current taxes and indebtedness on current arrears of taxes for which the person has entered into a consolidation agreement with the municipality, you are ineligible for nomination.” At the May 25 meeting, Councillor Osama Hamed resigned his position. A by-election to fill that position has been scheduled.

Doors and Windows: Choosing the Right Installer
Whether you’re renovating your home or building a new one, choosing the right doors and windows matters. How¬ever, it’s just as important to hire a competent and trustworthy contractor to install them. Here are a few tips to help you determine which company to hire. Collect as many reviews as possible Read online reviews and ask your friends and family for recommendations.
Make a list of several companies and inquire about their reputation, efficiency and cleanliness. Don’t forget to ask about after-sales service. Verify the contractor’s skills Doors and windows must be installed by an expert. Before hiring a professional, make sure they’re certified and have the appropriate licensing. This way, you can be sure their work is protected by a guarantee or insurance. Ask for quotes Compare several quotes to help you make your choice. Make sure details like the window type and materials are the same from one quote to another. If necessary, ask the contractor to walk you through the estimate. Lastly, when choosing a quote for your renovation project, don’t forget to factor in the value of a good customer experience.

Dash to Summer Fast and Furious in Vegreville Michelle Pinon News Advertiser The thunderous sound of pounding hooves returned to the Xtreme Equipment Vegreville - Kubota race track on June 4 and 5. A total of 26 chariots and 24 wagons competed in the 3rd annual Viterra Dash to Summer two day event that was hosted by the Vegreville Agricultural Society, (VAS) at the Ag. Grounds. Vegreville Driver Dwayne Dubuc won the championship in the chariots and Saskatchewan Driver Neil Salmond won the championship in the chuckwagons. Driver Shane Cartier from the Mannville area was pleased with how his team of horses performed in the Chuckwagon event. “This is my 38th year in racing,” said Cartier, who had two brand new horses on the wagon. Cartier finished in the middle of the pack in the standings and said his goal is to hit the top 10 regularly and building towards

peak performance mid-season and continuing on to next season. Cartier said he was very grateful to VAS for allowing him to stay and train at the race track for a month prior to the event. “It was a good thing to have had a good spring training and I’m happy with the way my team worked together.” During that time he also helped to prepare the track and make sure it was worked with harrows and watered thoroughly several times prior to the start of the event. Cartier said new sand was added to the track this past fall which has been very beneficial to its overall condition. Cartier wears several hats, and one of them was
chairing the Dash to Summer event committee. He also said he
