Vegreville Father’s Day event was held at Vegreville Agricultural Grounds on June 19.

Over 6,000 people attended this event which was brought to the community by The Iron Runners Club of Vegreville and the Vegreville Agricultural Society.

On the grounds, families were enjoying spending time together. Joey and Shellie were with their children, Kinsley and Quinn. When Kinsley was asked what was special about her dad, she said, “I love how my dad spends time with me and takes me camping. Also, he reads me stories and spends a lot of time with me and he is loving and caring. He is affectionate too.”

Quinn said her father takes her on a lot of adventures.

“He is a good worker and makes sure to buy me lots of things that I need.”

Taylor Balash was with his wife Jaime and their three children: Renington, Walter, and George. When Renington was asked why he likes his father, he said, “I like to work with my dad when we feed chickens and cows. He’s a good worker and he buys me nice things.

We go fishing and hunting together. I just love my dad.”

A few of the owners were next to their vehicles. Dave Gibson from Sherwood Park had a vintage vehicle from 1941, a Ford Model Pick-up that he’s owned for six years.

RCMP files from June 13 - 19 Arthur Beaudette News Advertiser June 13 10:36 – Report of a pole being cut down and copper wire taken from a rural property near RR135 and TWP 520. Under investigation.

14:19 – A phone was found in a parking lot of a retail outlet in Vegreville. The individual who found the phone brought it to the detachment and turned it in. The owner of the phone identified and the phone was reunited.

16:53 – Report of a bicycle stolen from a Vegreville School. CCTV shows a male wearing sunglasses drive up in a small black Ford truck and proceed to pick up the bike and place it in the back of the truck and then drive off. The bicycle is described as a black and Grey “GT”.

Under investigation.

19:13 – Report of an intoxicated person yelling and throwing items into the street.

Members attended and did locate the person in question who was intoxicated and acting erratically. Members had a talk with the individual, made sure he had a safe place to stay and were promised by the individual they would not misbehave.

June 14 02:54 – Traffic stop conducted of a silver Ford F250 that was leaving a Vegreville business. Mandatory alcohol screening was conducted. The driver failed. A 25-year-old male driver from the County of Minburn was released on provincial sanctions which include a $1,000 fine, vehicle seizure and 90 day driving suspension.

10:37 – Report of a break in to a Vegreville business outside compound over the weekend. Multiple vehicles were damaged in what appears to be a failed attempt to steal them. Under investigation.

15:31- Report of a catalytic converter stolen off of a vehicle while parked outside a Vegreville business over night.

Under investigation.

June 15 10:14- Report from a rural Lamont County resident who found an unknown green and white pickup truck in their yard, parked next to where their missing semi was the night before. The Peterbuilt semi with trailers was later located at a gravel pit near Innisfree. Witness information has been obtained that it is possible a Good Samaritan had come across the green and white Chevy pickup earlier and provided a ride to get gasoline.

Within the green and white pickup members located drug paraphernalia and syringes containing suspected fentanyl.

The truck was determined to have been stolen out of Tisdale, Saskatchewan on April 23, 2022. CCTV was reviewed and three suspects were later arrested by Vermilion members in Innisfree.

Suspects include a 30-year-old male from Watson, SK, a 30-year-old female from Waseca, SK and a 28-year-old female from Moosejaw, SK. Charges and court appearances to be determined as the matter is still under investigation, however, possession of stolen property, drug possession, drug trafficking, break and enter, obstruction, identity fraud, breach of undertaking and mail theft are being looked into.

13:58 – Report of a pole being cut down and copper wire removed from an abandoned yard site near Mundari. Under investigation.

20:05 – Vegreville members were contacted to provide assistance with a misbehaving child. Members attended and conducted a counselling session with the family.

June 16 08:52 – Report of a shoplifter seen on a CCTV recording from a Vegreville business. The suspect was observed taking approximately $2,000 worth of tools.

Investigators have identified the suspect and charges are pending. This suspect has charges pending on more than 20 similar offences in other areas of Alberta.

12:39 – Report of a copper wire stolen from a commercial site near Vegreville.

Under investigation.

20:27 – Report of a group of youth playing basketball with “loud” music at a Vegreville park. Members attended; however, the group had left. Members spoke with the complainant and informed them

that noise bylaws were not in effect at 8 pm and no offence had been committed.

June 17 05:02 – Response to a 911 call at a Vegreville lodging establishment.

Members attended and found a 54-yearold male from High Prairie who was intoxicated. The subject was asking for information on how best to get to Ottawa.

Members informed the individual that 911 was not for travel advice and that misuse of the 911 system was a chargeable offence.

8:45 – Report of locks being cut on outdoor storage at a Vegreville business.

The buildings were entered but it is not apparent that anything was taken at this time. Under investigation.

June 18 13:04 – Report of a possible stolen car and snowmobile that were “dumped” in his yard. Members attended and identified the owner of the vehicles. It was confirmed that the property had not been stolen and actually, arrangements had been made for the owner to leave the items at the complainant’s property.

June 19 09:42 – Traffic enforcement in the area by traffic services resulting in approximately 10 speeding tickets.

12:16 – Report of a break and enter that had occurred the day prior at a Vegreville residence. Under investigation.

During the week there were 69 calls for service made in total including: 0 false alarms, 1 false 911, 1 animal strike, 5 wellbeing check, 6 calls under the Mental Health Act or related to mental health, and approximately 17 tickets from traffic enforcement.

Archery Shoot Aims for Fun and Funds

Vegreville Wildlife Federation (VWF) 9th Annual 3D Archery Fun Shoot was held on June 11 and June 12 at the VWF Outdoor Range.

The event was open to all ages. VWF Director of Membership and Archery Fun Shoot Co-Chair Valerie Lowes said there were 45 people who participate. They ranged in age from two years up to over 60. “In our youth program we had about 15 people who took part,” added Lowes.

“We hold this event as a fundraiser for the VWF

and to have a fun shoot for people which helps them get out into the community and get to know what the sport of archery is all about. We have the 3D target so this is something different to shoot out. Also, it helps them to hone their skills. It is a mental game and the elements in this outdoor range is different than shooting inside in a building.

I think young people gain the community involvement, they get some life skills and they meet a whole bunch of new friends when they participate in archery. It helps their fine motor skills and their confidence level. There are so many elements to it.

We get our kids in our VWF Youth Archers volunteering and helping with the prizes or at the canteen at this fun shoot,” Valerie said.

Cloverlodge Stampede Returns to Viking Michelle Pinon News Advertiser Rodeo action returned to Viking on June 11 and 12 thanks to members of the Cloverlodge Stampede Association.

It was the 42nd consecutive year the rodeo has been held in the community and was greatly appreciated by fans. The weather played a key role in success of the rodeo that was enjoyed by folks of all ages.

News Advertiser – Opinion In case you haven’t been watching, governments in Canada are taking even more steps toward increasing our nanny state. Often disguised as concern for our health, one could argue that, at times, these are simply moves to grab more tax money or prove to themselves that they are more important than most of us think they are.

In the past, various “sin” taxes have been levied in the name of healthier living. On the surface, this sounds reasonable, but a closer look shows us that governments are partnered in the system that taxes us for so many things. If all of these taxes went towards programs to actually focus on providing healthier lives, it would be more palatable, but that is not the case.

In Newfoundland and Labrador, September will see the arrival of a new tax on sugar sweetened Beverages or SSBs. We know that despite being necessary for human function, sugar is bad for us. We get all the sugar we need from regular unprocessed food, so we don’t need it added in other foods, not to mention pouring it down our throats. Despite knowing this, we, as population continue our obsession. Why? Well, it’s just so darn good!! Will these taxes go towards efforts to counteract the effects of highsugar diets? Maybe a portion, but you can bet that most of it will go into general revenue and be used to fund many questionable line items.

With cigarettes, we get to see nasty images of rotting mouths and who knows what. I don’t make a habit of seeking out these images, not even to write this article. However, I do know that despite this, the high taxes and hiding the product from public view that people are still smoking. I see butts in parking lots and on sidewalks daily. So what to do? Well, the deep thinkers at Health Canada have decided that printing warnings right ON the cigarettes will solve the problem. Touted as a “first” in the world, consultations are underway to garner feedback on the plan. All I see is a half-hearted effort to make it appear as though a message on a cigarette will save lives while not putting the $8 billion in tax revenue in too much jeopardy.

How else can the government save us from ourselves? They’ve outlawed lawn darts, mandated seat belts and helmets, and they want to prevent us from killing ourselves with sugary goodness.

What else could they do to make my life even more boring than it already is while keeping me safe?

Well, the short answer is ground beef. Because, as we will soon be told, your favourite hamburger puts you in danger.

Health Canada is looking to put labels on foods that contain at least 15 percent of their recommended daily intake of sodium, sugar or saturated fat. Most whole foods will be exempt, including fruits, but not ground meats like beef and pork.

In a day where so much processed foods are consumed and many people don’t know how to operate a stove, Health Canada is looking to warn people about ground beef, which is a staple in many households, and has been for longer than most of us have been alive.

Why ground beef? It’s unclear and many are baffled.

If you were going to put warnings on something how about a few on this list? In the sugar category: cookies, ice cream, candy, sugar laden cereals, cake, flavoured yogurt. Or better yet, put a sugar tax on these. We all know that excessive salt is bad for us.

How about labels on chips, pretzels canned soup, cheezies, most processed snack food and even the cheezy goodness of KD. Carbs. We all love carbs, yet they are so bad for us. White bread, white rice, pasta, French fries, cereal, (we can’t forget that one again) and donuts… we also can’t forget donuts. On to processed foods… how about hot dogs, cold cuts and beef jerky?

Are eggs still bad for us? I think we will need stamps on eggs too. It shouldn’t be long before we have warnings on almost everything we eat. Some people will make better decisions than others, and in a free society, we should be allowed to make those decisions. I don’t want to have to pay for your poor decisions, but I don’t want to pay for the $80,000 in-flight catering bill for the Governor General’s trip to the Middle East in March either.

The bottom line is that the human condition is terminal. We are not getting out of this one alive. Who doesn’t love themselves some bacon?? When that becomes illegal, I’ll know the end is near.

Mundare entrepreneur Ruth Derow said she didn’t even know what the word entrepreneur meant before she participated in the event. But with the help from experts at Elk Island Community Futures and support of her parents Robin and Shawn and her siblings Clara, Wes, Russell and Martin she was armed with the tools and knowledge she needed to open her lemonade stand.

Both girls said they love being entrepreneurs and said it is fun learning how to create your own business and seeing the smiles on customers’ faces when they taste their lemonade.

Even though they did not have a goal going into the event, they definitely wanted to get out and something fun.

This was the second year the siblings have participated in Lemonade Day and said they may even set up a booth at the market at Pysanka Park this summer.

The mission of Lemonade Day is to help youth become business leaders, social advocates, community volunteers and forward thinking citizens of tomorrow.

Lemonade Day was brought to Northern Alberta in 2018 by one Community Futures office and was offered to participants in their region.

Since then, Lemonade Day has spread to 12 Northern Alberta Community Futures regions.

Mundare and Vegreville are located in Community Futures Elk Island Region.

This was the first year the Town of Mundare has participated in the event.

In 2021, 696 kids throughout Northern Alberta participated in Lemonade Day

90 Years Ago – June 22, 1932

The gang of men who have been gravelling the highway through Ryley finished work here on Wednesday, moving to Poe on Thursday.

Mrs. Teare has been boarding then and was kept very busy.

Messrs. Jeston, Calder, A.F. Hardy, C. Hurst, came to see the M.D. of Norma council meeting with regard to the road to the elevators at Warwick. Moved by Siminiuk, seconded by McDonald “That the secretary write to the Canadian Pacific Railway Company asking that the railway company repair the road on the right-of-way leading to the elevators ta Warwick and Norma as such are almost impassable at present.

The Willingdon sports enthusiasts held their meeting on Saturday last and the following officials were elected: Baseball – Mile Tann; Junior Sports – Wm Pidruchney; Horseshoes – P.M. Serbu; Ground Com – E. Kowalchuk; Advertising – P.M. Serbu; Finance –P.M. Serbu; Decoration – Nick Boychuk and Dance Com – Wm. Esak.

Mr. Metro Bilbey has pulled to pieces his old home and is now rebuilding it at Shandro. His house, built 30 years ago, was the old Central European style, with thatched roof, whitewashed walls internally and externally, and two large rooms.

75 Years Ago – June 25, 1947

More than 100 members of the Alberta Farmers’ Union, including 48 special delegates from various locals, attended the A.F.U. rally held in the Eagle Hall in Olds recently. Carl J. Stimpfle, provincial president of the union, was guest speaker. Mr. Stimpfle reviewed the farmer’s non-delivery strike of last year and said it was considered a success. He also stated that another strike is possible with a commodity like grain being completely boycotted.

Pupils, parents and the school board unite in regret that Miss Nell Salamandick, who has been the very capable teacher of arts and home economics on the High School staff for the past three years, has resigned. Miss Salamandick will leave in September to open the new department of home economics at Victoria College. In addition to her excellent work in the high school, Miss Salamandick always lent a willing hand in any community endeavor and Vegreville is distinctly the loser by her decision to accept another position.

50 Years Ago – June 22, 1972

Each year the women’s division of the Canadian National Exhibition in Toronto, Ontario, invites student from kindergarten to Grade 13 to compete for prizes in some 62 categories. Winners from Queen Elizabeth School, Vegreville were: First Prize; Shelley Russ, Grade 3. Honorarium Ribbons: Wanda Tymchuk, Grade 2 and Daryl Kowalski, Grade 2.

Mrs. Harold Trenaman, Regent of the Ada I. Wright Chapter, I.O.D.E. presented a cheque for $650.00 for the charging desk to be purchased for the Vegreville Public Library, under construction at the moment. Mrs. R. Nikiforuk, chairman of the Library was on hand to accept the cheque for the new project.

Miss Dianne Trenaman of Vegreville received her diploma of Dental Hygiene and her Dental Auxiliary Certificate at Spring Convocation at the University of Alberta. She is now employed at the Vegreville Health Unit as Dental Hygienist.

Hail damage to grain crops in Alberta in 1971 was the heaviest in recent years, according to Alberta Hail and Crop Insurance Corporation officials. The corporation which does about 75% of all hail business in the province, reports that it paid claims last year totaling $2,721,000. 25 Years Ago – June 24, 1997

The ground had been broken and construction of Vegreville’s new emergency services building will begin immediately. Fire Chief Dale Lefebvre confirmed construction will start right away on the 11,200 square foot building on a 3.89 acre parcel of land in the 5100 block of 60th Street, immediately north of the Vegreville Veterinary Clinic.

A local Canada Post employee has received the corporation’s highest recognition award. Ron Bilyk was presented with the Golden Postmark. The Award was given for Bilyk’s efforts in December. On a Friday morning in that month, Vegreville’s delivery person resigned. A new contractor was immediately hired to start the following Monday, but needed training first. Bilyk met the new contractor on Sunday for training and together they prepared the mail for Monday’s delivery.

It’s a new era at Vegreville’s Kal Tire outlet. Frank and Judi Becker became the new owners of Frank’s Tire and Auto on June 12, but will operate the business as Kal Tire.

Two Hills Historical Society president Steve Miskiw was busy painting the newly acquired caboose at the museum site. The caboose, built in April, 1981 and weighing over 28 tons, was moved to the site in the fall of 1996.

Alberta First Nation Clinic Will Cut Health Care Wait Times Joseph Quesnel Frontier Centre for Public Policy

Indigenous communities across Canada should learn from an Alberta First Nation that’s establishing a private health clinic to provide services that will reduce the pressure on the public system.

The Alberta government recently approved a plan by the Enoch Cree Nation, close to Edmonton, to build a private clinic specializing in hip and knee surgeries. This clinic will partner the First Nation with companies that will construct the building and provide the equipment. As with other public clinics, the surgeries completed in this clinic will be, in most cases, covered by public funds.

Before readers become upset by this proposal, private clinics are quite common across the country.

These private clinics are, in fact, needed to reduce the backlogs that exist in many surgical procedures. Like other private clinics, the Enoch clinic will be tightly controlled by the provincial health department.

As often happens in our country, any discussion of private health care gets short-circuited by baseless claims of “American-style” care. In fact, the evidence suggests that the U.S. was better able to respond to its health-care needs during the COVID19 pandemic than Canada was. Unfortunately, the mainstream media in Canada missed this evidence because it was, so it seems, too busy promoting the government narrative and demonizing Canadians who were unvaccinated.

During the pandemic, we clearly learned that Canada’s healthcare system isn’t prepared for substantial surges in demand. The surge from the pandemic led to tens of thousands

of postponed surgeries. Some patients, in fact, died while waiting in a queue. The increased demand also affected health-care workers, who were under considerable stress. Medical professionals were burning out at a high rate, and many left the profession.

Even so, one hopes that the Enoch experience will lead to the opening of more private health-care clinics on First Nations. Indeed, some of Canada’s other Indigenous communities could build private clinics, providing their communities with increased revenue and high-skilled jobs.

Because the federal and provincial governments will be involved, the Enoch First Nation will pioneer the way to solving some significant jurisdictional difficulties. The federal government could provide substantial and needed support for First Nations which would like to help deliver health-care services to Canadians.

Enoch Cree Nation isn’t the only First Nation to be involved in delivering health care. In 2012, the Westbank First Nation in B.C. announced a plan to build a for-profit hospital targeting medical tourists and Canadians who needed extended care.

At the time, some constitutional experts thought this project would violate the Canada Health Act. The Westbank First Nation claimed that, as a self-governing community, it wasn’t constrained by the act.

In the end, the First Nation abandoned the proposal.

Nevertheless, the decision by the Enoch First Nation may set a precedent by showing other First Nations how to build health-care clinics. Of course, clinics would promote the establishment of other services, resulting in much-needed economic and employment prospects for Indigenous people.

Farmers’ Day Appreciation Barbecue Draws Great Crowd and Raises $10,000 for Ukrainian Settlers Michelle Pinon News Advertiser The County of Two Hills in collaboration with the Derwent and District Agricultural Society co-hosted a Farmers’ Appreciation Barbecue at the Derwent Arena on June 10.

An estimated 150 people attended the event which also included a silent auction fundraiser with 100 percent of the proceeds going to resettlement of Ukrainians in the area. Sara Miller, Assistant Agricultural Fieldman for the County of Two Hills, said $10,910 raised also included cash donations.

Connie Mackney, President of the Derwent and District Agricultural Society, Mackney said it was really nice to see the crowd at the Farmers’ Day celebration and to have great support from businesses in the area.

Capital Works Project Underway in Two Hills Michelle Pinon News Advertiser A capital works project that was delayed by a year is finally underway in the Town of Two Hills.

Interim Chief Administrative Officer Ava Clark said paving of the parking lot at the Two Hills Centennial Hall is complete and crews with Spectre System are currently working on 45 Avenue. Clark said the approaches between 52 and 53 Street will also be paved.

The total amount of the project is just over $247,000 and covered through the Municipal Sustainability Initiative Grant.

“He was only 18 when he left to go serve in the war,” said Andy. While his father did not speak much about his experiences, he did say the training and skills of Canadian soldiers were widely recognized and respected.

Andy said his mom died when his youngest sibling, one of 11, was only four-years-old. So, Charlie was left to raise his family of 11 by himself. Charlie farmed in the Tofield area moved to Ryley in 1974. Andy said his father was an active member of the Ryley Legion for 25 years and took part in many Remembrance Day ceremonies and other special events the Legion held there.

George Hoggins was one of 125 Veterans honoured at the Decoration Day Service in Vegreville. He grew up on a farm at the edge of the north side of Sickman Lake near Lavoy.

In August 1940 he enlisted with the Edmonton Fusiliers, switching to the Royal Canadian Engineers in 1941 where he served alongside his brother Reg until his discharge on his birthday, October 18, 1945. George and Reg sailed together to England in June 1942 where they met up with their dad, Dick, who had shipped over earlier.

For the majority of his time, he worked as a wireless operator sending and receiving important information while Reg rode motorcycles delivering messages.

During WW2 he served in Canada, England, Belgium and took part in the liberation of both the Netherlands and France. He also participated in the parade during the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II on June 2, 1953.

George was never wounded during the war but said he was “bombed, shelled and everything else.” When asked what his feelings were about the war, he replied, in part, “I’ve always maintained that the good helped to outweigh the bad. The war was hard on the mothers and the children (overseas). They suffered from malnutrition because the occupying forces took the best of everything.”

He said the worst memory of the war was seeing the damage the anti-personnel landmines wreaked upon the civilians of Holland. George returned to Vegreville, and after rejoining the army from 1950 to 1953, and again from 1955 to 1958, he took over the family dairy farm in 1958 with his wife, Lorna, and four children.

George also became a life member of the Vegreville Branch of the Royal Canadian Legion and also was in charge of the Army Cadets for many years. He also received many Legion service awards. War Medals received: 1939-1945 Star, France & Germany Star, Defence Medal, Medal in Defence of Britain, C.V.S.M., Coronation Medal, NATO Medal, and the Medal of France.

Underneath a sunny sky, RCL Branch No. 39 presented their Decoration Day Service at Riverside Cemetery in Vegreville on June 12. Service Officer Rhonda Hayduk emceed the service.

RCL Branch No. 39 President Terry Kuzyk gave the address written by Rod Stewart called, On Decoration Day. “Good Afternoon and thank you for joining us here today to remember and pay tribute to the members of our communities, who served, survived their military service time and have since passed on.

While we are physically here at Riverside Cemetery, we are also symbolically honouring those veterans who lie in area cemeteries that surround Vegreville.

As a nation, Canada is very young, one hundred and fifty-five years to be exact. But in that century and a half we have experienced and participated in two World Wars, the Korean War, several other smaller wars and about fifty peacekeeping missions.

Hannah Yuke had her two-and-a-half-year-old daughter Harper Lesoway participate in the horse show with their horse Dallas. When asked how she felt about her daughter participating, Hannah said,” I feel good about this as I grew up always loving horses. So, I am excited that she has the same interest in horses that I do. She’s never competed before but I think she will be good at it. She has been riding horses for a good six months now. So, I am pretty confident that she will do well at it.

For myself, this will be my first time showing my horse but I have been riding horses for about 10 years now. I like riding horses because it gives me a chance to have a nice and close bond with them.”

The festivities included a steak supper, special presentations and honkytonk dance at the community centre.

Rosanne Fortier News Correspondent Vegreville and District Co-op recognized Farmers’ Day on June 10 with a fundraising lunch and a display of vintage vehicles from members of Vegreville Iron Runners Auto Club.

A total of $1,803 was raised during the event with 100 percent of the proceeds going to Vegreville and Area Stands With Ukraine.

Vegreville and District Co-op General Manager Glen McLeay said, “The Vegreville Co-op Directors held a Farmers’ Day Beef on the Bun Lunch to raise funds for Vegreville and Area Stands With Ukraine Society. Each year the directors choose a local organization to support and this year they felt this was a group that could use the proceeds.”

Vegreville and District Co-op Board President Joanne Gorda said, “We have a pretty significant Ukrainian heritage here in town and what is happening in Ukraine is beyond horrific. We do fundraise and donate to other causes, but this one is very urgent and very timely. So, it was voted unanimously that we donate to this cause.”

George and Velma Sample showcased their vintage 1951 Pontiac Eight sedan.

“This is a built in America car which was built for Pontiac’s 25th Anniversary. We bought it used and it has never been restored. We like collecting vintage vehicles as it gives us something interesting to do while we are retired,” Velma said.

John and Madeline Kitz had their 1952 Chevrolet on display. John said, “My uncle bought this vehicle new and he gave it to me before he passed away. Before we got it, we did a lot of work on it. We drive it to car show. We do a little bit of work on it every year to keep it in good shape,” John said.

Madeline added, “The reason we like vintage vehicles so much is because we are from the old times and they have so much chrome on them. These new cars are made out of so much plastic. The vintage vehicles are so good looking.”

Michelle Pinon News Advertiser Ryley Summer Fest was full of fun-filled activities for people of all ages to enjoy. Even though there was rain, there was also some sunshine during the twoday event held on June 17 and 18, which was hosted by the Village of Ryley.

Friday evening featured a variety of local entertainers, cribbage tournament, wagon rides, kids’ games, street dance as well as tasty food from several different organizations and businesses in the community.

Even though it was raining during the parade on Saturday, people turned out to watch more than 25 entries make their way down Main Street. Over at the community hall was a market featuring a variety

of homemade and homegrown items from 18 vendors.

The Ryley Museum was open for tours, the Ryley Redliners hosting a show ‘n shine, miniature drone derby, a demonstration featuring hawks and falcons from Predator Company. The Ryley Ag. Society served up beef on a bun and supplied local entertainment from Niko’s Dance Academy.

Village of Ryley Chief Administrative Officer Ron Cust said more than 150 people rode the miniature train, many enjoyed taking a ride on Kumson’s electric ATVs, and well over 100 people attended the family dance and movie Ecanto.

Saturday evening capped off with spectacular fireworks show. Mayor Nik Lee said, “In my view, an absolute success. The comments I received was

There was an Outdoor and Indoor Trade Show Mini Market event at Synergy Centre on June 4 and Dining Hall located on the Vegreville Agricultural Society (VAS) Grounds.

This market was part of VAS Viterra Dash to Summer event so it featured equine products and food for horses as well as regular trade show products.

VAS Office Manager Rachel Farr said they added a mini market in hopes of expanding the Viterra Dash to Summer event and there were seven vendors at the event.

The list of businesses who participated were Colour Street, Simply Hooked by Soph & Calina A Sewing, The Greedy Horse Co., Adianna’s Woofy Cookies and Horse Treats, Kora’s Lemonade, Briar Rose Creations, Night Pulse Customs which included custom tumblers, win tumblers and water bottles, Leaf Filter Gutter Protection.

Vendor Stephanie Bustamante, owner of The Greedy Horse Co., sold healthy quality equine cookies. “I have a passion for horses and I thought this would be a good event to sell my products at. I started

Vendor Tamara Lupul was selling Briar Rose Creations. “These products are all hand made by me. I have been making them on and off for about five years. My products are used for room or door décor. They have a farm feel to them especially the wagon wheel ones I make,” added Lupul.

On May 26, Vegreville Cares Coalition offered a Time to Block Party event at Vegreville Elks/ Kinsmen Park.

The Vegreville Doll Show and Toy Sale was a popular attraction on May 28 at Pomeroy Hotel.

Organizer Virginia Workman, from DollQuest and Toy Treasures, said there were eight vendors at this sale and 35 people attended the show and sale.

“This is the second time I hosted one of these sales in Vegreville. I have so many dolls. I am kind of a doll collector; I start

with buying one doll and I land up with several. A lot of the doll collectors are getting older and the dolls help them to remember a time when they were young.

We also don’t get a lot of children attending these shows who collect dolls, so this is an opportunity for the ones who choose to do this to come and see the dolls.

time and told me that her family was so poor she had to go out and get a stick and they wrapped cloth around it, and that was her doll. So, we get people like that coming in and sharing their stories. It is just an amazing past time.

At this event, we have antique dolls all the way up to very modern dolls. We also have hot wheels, and toys for boys. I have boys who come to this show and they know exactly what they want when they are looking for a doll.

I am happy with the way the show and sale turned out. We are looking forward to hosting it again next year where it will get bigger and better. The feedback I got from the vendors is they were pleased with how it turned out and they are looking forward to coming back next year.”

antique dolls, and even Peg dolls which are from 1885. “I have been collecting dolls for the last 20 years. We don’t go to estate sales or anything, people find me and sell their dolls to me. Being at these sales is wonderful because I meet a large range of people. I wanted to start collecting dolls as I am an impulsive collector of things,” Penny said.

Another vendor, Ethel Mandigo who is from Edmonton said she has been collecting dolls for over 30 years. “I always loved collecting dolls. Then I joined the Doll Club and started collecting antique dolls. I had dolls as a little girl but we used to wreck everything. My sister and I got these beautiful dolls one year for Christmas and we asked our granny if we cut their hair will it grow back and she said, yes as she wasn’t paying attention. Now, I want to have dolls I can take good care of. What is so special about collecting dolls is when you see a doll you like, your heartbeat goes up. It is such a good feeling,” Ethel added.

William Smolak said he co-chairs the Father’s Day Event (FDE) along with Derek Fox. “People brought in 174 vehicles to showcase. They came from as far as Calgary, Westlock, Lloydminster, St. Paul and elsewhere. “We usually get collector vehicles ranging from vintage pre 50’s cars and trucks to 1980’s and up vehicles.

We had modified vehicles, muscle cars, hearses (called bone wagons by some), unrestored vehicles, rat rods, pick-up trucks, and even special interest and foreign vehicles. Hot rods and other vehicles were also showcased.
