Town of Vegreville’s Face Mask Bylaw Expires June 30 Town of Vegreville Submitted Town of Vegreville Bylaw No. 08-2020, the Temporary Mandatory Face Coverings Bylaw, is set to expire at month’s end.

The Bylaw, which mandated the wearing of face coverings in indoor public places and public vehicles, came into effect on November 30, 2020, and was extended beyond its original expiry date of February 28, 2021, to June 30, 2021. “I, along with Council, feel the time is right to allow this bylaw to expire as opposed to extending it once again. This will put Vegreville in line with the province’s easing of restrictions in its ‘Open for Summer’ plan and, while there’s still work to be done, we’re happy to see that most of our eligible residents have been or are planning to be vaccinated,” stated Mayor Tim MacPhee. Alberta will enter Stage 3 of the ‘Open for Summer Plan’ on July 1 which will see all restrictions lifted, including the

general indoor provincial mask mandate with some exceptions in specific settings. “Council would like to remind our community that not everyone will feel comfortable with the easing restrictions so it’s important that we respect each other as we enter into a new phase. I’d also like to stress that businesses have every right to continue to enforce their customers and clients and staff to wear a mask, even if provincial and local restrictions are being lifted.” While mandatory masking restrictions will no longer be in effect as of July 1, eligible residents of Vegreville are strongly encouraged to book appointments to be vaccinated. As of June 22, 65.8 percent of the eligible population (ages 12 and older) in the Vegreville/County of Minburn region had received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine.

Canada Day 2021 As we approach Canada Day 2021, I find myself asking again, if I recognize this Canada we live in. This past year has been like no other in our memory, and quite rare even in our nation’s history. We have been living through a pandemic, our parliament has been on pause for the better part of a year without meeting. We have record scandals in Ottawa, the government is suing the speaker of the house, and battling First Nations children in court by appealing a Canadian Human Rights Tribunal ruling. As a country, we are also experiencing debt like no other, this week we have set heat records as the west is sweltering amid ongoing climate change, and we are seeing Churches burned as the unsavory past begins to surface on Canadian Residential Schools. This Canada is, without a doubt, a Canada many of us are not familiar with. I would suspect that a large percentage of us did not understand this part of our true history due to our whitewashed education. There has been much discussion after discoveries of unmarked graves at residential schools about cancelling Canada Day. Many cities have already done this and suggested that this Canada Day be one of reflection instead of celebration. There is understandably much anger and intense emotions

with the state our country is in. What has come to light here has also reverberated around the globe and started discussions in countries such as Australia about taking a closer look at their history. Not everyone agrees with some of the reaction to these discoveries. As of early this week, there had been four Catholic churches burned down in Western Canada. Initially, two Catholic churches in British Columbia were burned down on Monday June 21, which was National Indigenous Day in Canada. Following this, two more churches were razed in British Columbia at St. Ann’s Church and Chopaka Church, which are located within an hour of each other and near Indigenous communities. Indigenous leaders have stood up to express their feelings and have stated that while they understand the emotions, some of these churches were built by their ancestors and were significant parts of their communities. Chief of the Lower Similkameen Indian Band, Keith Crow said that the church burning in their community was devastating. With members attending this church there are memories of weddings and funerals. “Whoever did it should know it was just wrong.” There are ongoing discussions about cancelling Canada Day. There will always be differing opinions and everyone must make their own decisions. We can celebrate Canada’s birthday while still understanding the wrongs of the past. Blowing up our history and tearing down statues will not change that history. While celebrating certain figures from our past may not be appropriate, erasing them from history has its own risks. Meetings and studies won’t erase the past, and promises with crocodile tears won’t fix our problems or change where we are today. Regardless of how one chooses to spend Canada Day, hopefully it will be the last one where we are so divided as people of Canada. As I watch these events reveal themselves to us daily, I think back to a brief conversation that rings loudly in my head. Many years ago while at a wedding, an Indigenous man said to me. “You likely noticed that much of the crowd is Canadian...” He didn’t say Native or Indigenous, he said CANADIAN. He was proud of that as he was of his Indigenous heritage as we went on to discuss music and food. This Canada Day, let’s all be proud of being Canadian, and do what we can to listen closely and understand the mistakes of the past so we do not repeat them. Let us make real efforts to be part of a Canada where all Canadians are respected regardless of their heritage, religion, colour of their skin, or their last name. Maybe then, we will have a Canada we will recognize once again. Tell me what you think. Email me at abletters@newsadvertiser.com

Rosanne Fortier News Correspondent

ArtWalk 2021 featured a Front Window Gallery with the collective theme of flowers on the windows of over 50 businesses in Vegreville. Anya Langkow, Tourism, Recreation and Culture Coordinator for the Town of Vegreville, said it is the third year that they partnered with Vegreville Visual Artists (VVA) to bring some type of ArtWalk to the community. “The Vegreville Tourism Advisory Board and the Town of Vegreville partnered with VVA for ArtWalk 2019 and 2020 and we really worked on increasing our partnership with the Chamber of Commerce for Artwalk 2021. We are trying to work on building those relationships because community spirit and tourism are economic development drivers and the link to the businesses is important,” Langkow explained. “We are lucky to have Sam Ulan who is a Seasonal Travel Ambassador at Vegreville Visitor Information Centre. She is an artist with experience doing front window painting. So we were talking about how we could get creative about the ArtWalk this year not knowing where the COVID-19 restrictions were going to be at. Some businesses were opened, some were closed, and some were opened by appointment only. So, we thought a great way to amend it this year would be to have the paintings outside of the businesses encouraging people to come and look at them and then hopefully go inside. Sam held a little information session with VVA and

“The artists started painting the windows at the beginning of June but we have been working on connecting with the businesses and artists since May. We have had a dozen artists participating, counting the ones from the Vegreville Visitor Information Centre, and around 10 artists from VVA. What has been exciting about this artwork is the new involvement of businesses who haven’t participated in any of our initiatives before join us for this Artwalk.” Michelle Henderson, Vegreville & District Chamber of Commerce Manager said the Chamber of Commerce sent out e-mails to the businesses who are Chamber members and told them to let the Chamber know if they wanted to participate. Businesses did not have to be a Chamber member to participate. “We were also the centre point where we had all the paints and supplies in the front of the Chamber’s office. The response from the businesses has been very positive. They really jumped on board. This is yet another example of the Chamber working with the town, artists and tourism and Diane Fausak and Pat the other businesses in our Anderson paint the community to make it a more window of Everything Tea. welcoming, fun place to be,” (Rosanne Fortier/Photo) Henderson added.

90 Years Ago – July 1, 1931

Getting in contact with a live wire carrying 13.000 volts, Mr. Jock Clarke, of the local staff of the Canadian Utilities, was badly burned and injured. Jock was working on the ladder outside the power plant when he received the shock. No blame is attached to anyone for the accident. Prompt application of artificial respiration by R.J. Stringer and Ralph Provan, who were in the plant at the time, probably saved Jock’s life, as the force of the current knocked him unconscious. Dr. Reid was summoned and the injured man was rushed to the General Hospital. The government highway which is to run parallel with the C.N. tracks from Tofield to Holden, has been staked out and operations are to commence this week. While milking a cow, the animal misplaced its hind hoof, and as a result N.E. Thachuk is suffering with a sore foot. This was one of those accidents which look funny, but hurt a lot. The well-known Sphinx has nothing on a Vegreville man we know when it comes to keeping a secret. Over a month ago, Dr. S. Hardin was notified that he was the winner of a five hundred dollar sweepstake prize. The doctor kept the news to himself until the entire show was given away on him by travellers returning from Vancouver.

75 Years Ago – June 26, 1946

The new well sunk at the swimming hole recently is holding out at a flow of 10 gallons per minute which is considered to be an ample flow for the purpose, which is to supplement the town supply of water for the swimming pool. The drillers went down 247 feet to secure the flow which is apparently from an underground stream. On Thursday of last week, Jim Carle, manager of the Vegreville Creamery branch of the N.A.D.P., had his outfit inspected by the following directors of the Pool; F.W. Maddock of Entwhistle, president; C.O. Jevne of Wetaskiwin, Roy Marler of Edmonton, A.L. Pearce of Lamont, E.E. Pearce of Tawatinaw, J. MaKay Hughes of Flatbush, secretary; and Barney Stanley of Edmonton, general manager. It has been five years since Mr. Hughes, who formerly farmed south of town on the Baxandall place, has visited Vegreville. Their stay here was brief, just one afternoon, and the party then left to inspect other creameries along the line.

50 Years Ago – July 1, 1971

After years of seismograph work and the drilling of several gas producing wells the Vegreville district now boasts a producing well located about four miles south of the town. Mesa Petroleum of Calgary drilled the well a short while ago on the farm of Richard Schoettler and at the moment test pumping is going on. Two more sites have been set up for drilling, one of them being across the road from Schoettler’s property on the Millard Andersons property and another on the farm of Camille Benoit close by. Lt. Governor Grant MacEwan performed the duty of planting a tree on the grounds of St. John’s Masonic Lodge on the occasion of the Vegreville Jaycees President’s Ball last Thursday evening. Assisting Dr. MacEwan was Dr. S. H. Hardin a Past Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Alberta. A humorous aside was the fact that the Lt. Governor, in his hurry to arrive in Vegreville on time from Edmonton, forgot to bring a tree along with him and as a result Dr. Hardin obligingly found one to be used for the purpose.

25 Years Ago – July 2, 1996

Queen Elizabeth School’s principal is changing schools with the fall term. Blair Ching will be assistant principal at Sherwood Heights junior high. Ron Horon, principal at A.L. Horton elementary (grades 4 to 6) takes on the job as principal at both Vegreville elementaries. He will be assisted by Cliff Moroziuk, the former principal at Chipman Elementary. Meanwhile, the former assistant principal at Fort Saskatchewan elementary, Don Snow, fills Moroziuk’s position in Chipman. The Veselka Ukrainian Dancers is just one of the groups performing at this year’s Pysanka Festival in Vegreville. The group has over 40 members, aged 19 to 55. The highlight of their visit to Vegreville will be their presentation of “Welcome to Rainbow,” a show that includes traditional dance and Ukrainian choreography with a western flair. A lot of people were fascinated by the equipment in the mailroom at the Case Processing Centre during their open house on June 27. Laura Argent showed the fleximailer which takes a sheet of paper, folds it, stuffs it into an envelope and stamps the envelope. The mail room processes about 1000 pieces of mail each day, and is one of three such processing centres in Canada. The centre has 196 employees, 60% of which who live in Vegreville.

Changes to Royalties Could Super-charge Upgrading in Alberta Krystle Wittlevrongel Montreal Economic Institute

With news of the official termination of the Keystone XL project, the Alberta government is out approximately $1.3 billion. What’s more, the province is left with unrefined bitumen that it doesn’t have the capacity to upgrade to higher-value products like gasoline and diesel. Why, then, does the province not look to develop its own capacity to refine bitumen and upgrade its oil sands resources internally? While the answer is complex, one factor is the government’s royalty system, which disincentivizes processing bitumen into higher-value products. Due to the Bitumen Valuation Methodology (BVM), the government collects higher royalties per barrel for oil sands producers that upgrade bitumen compared with those selling raw bitumen directly to refineries. Charging a much lower royalty payment per barrel encourages the sale of raw bitumen out of province. Currently about 35 percent of the bitumen produced in Alberta is upgraded in the province, with the remaining 65 percent sold directly to out-ofprovince refineries. Prior to the implementation of the BVM in 2009, roughly 60 percent was upgraded in Alberta. In addition to the more than $18 billion that oil sands investors have spent on American refineries and upgraders since the BVM was instituted, many jobs that could have gone to Albertans have also been created and maintained in

the United States. It just makes sense. Why would a producer pay more to upgrade bitumen in the province when it costs considerably less to have an out-of-province refinery do it? In 2019, oil sands extraction and refineries alone contributed over $68 billion to the Alberta economy and sustained more than 131,000 jobs. This translates to over 18 percent of provincial GDP and more than five per cent of the province’s workforce. It is estimated that aligning the BVM with market prices would allow the volume of bitumen upgraded in the province to increase to 50 percent over the next 12 years. This would result in the creation of over 41,000 jobs in the province and generate an average of over $700 million in annual revenue, despite a short-term reduction in revenues. Updating the royalty system to one based on market pricing for bitumen also invites capital investment and the accompanying development of other oil sands products such as carbon fibre. Alberta Innovates, a crown corporation that promotes innovation, sees significant potential in carbon fibre, which could represent a multibillion-dollar opportunity. Replacing steel with carbon fibre can reduce the weight of a typical vehicle by two-thirds, and a lighter vehicle reduces fuel consumption. The government of Alberta’s 2020 Recovery Plan pledges to create tens of thousands of jobs, make Alberta more competitive, and ensure a strong future for the province’s innovative energy industry. Given these commitments, fixing the BVM seems like low-hanging fruit. Krystle Wittevrongel is a Public Policy Analyst at the MEI.

Lakeland MP Slams Forced Passage of Bill C-10 Michelle Pinon News Advertiser Lakeland MP Shannon Stubbs said Bill C-10 is “dangerous” and “unnecessary” and blasted the Liberals for “gag orders” and “super motions” that halted all debate in the House of Commons one week ago.

Stubbs said the Conservative Party was the only party to oppose what she calls the “censorship” bill that was passed by a vote of 196, with 112 Liberals, Bloc, NDP and Green Party voting in favour of it shortly before 1:30 am on June 22. The legislation will still have to win passage through the Senate before it officially becomes law. Stubbs said the Senate is Liberal dominated and may very well pass it or put forward amendments, however, it comes back to the House of Commons. After that the timeline is unknown. Bill C-10 aims to amend the Broadcasting Act to grant greater regulatory powers to

the CRTC to regulate streaming services and apps as well as user-generated content on social media. Stubbs said the reason it is dangerous is because it can censor what we can see, and they have given nothing in the legislation that clarifies how far the reach is of the CRTC, and that could be a massive abuse of power. “Also, it should be of great concern when a government pushed a bill through that they limited debate on, removed their own amendments on, and reinserted previous amendments. Also, it should be noted we heard again and again from constituents they have no want to have a government controlling their content or access to information. So again, the issue is that the legislation does not define how far the scope of censorship is. Another point to make is every Canadian should be concerned if the government gets to control what we have access to read, hear, or watch; and this

bill leaves it undefined how far the CRTC has reach on regulating online social media. The danger is the fact that we don’t know because this happened when there was no debate on amendments, just the number of the amendment, no disclosure to the public of how the legislation is being changed or what it can impact so that is the issue there is no answer.” Heritage Minister Steven Guilbault introduced the Bill in the House of Commons back in November of 2020. New Developments on the Rise in Mundare Michelle Pinon News Advertiser New developments are on the rise in the Town of Mundare. Mayor Mike Saric said that in the last six months two lots under the $1 a lot program have been spoken for. “The parties have a fixed timeline in which to get permits in place and begin construction so we are hopeful the projects will come to fruition.” Saric stated that Ernie Kowal is building a new office and

shop space beside the bottle depot which is located along 50 Avenue and 50 Street. “The town extended the water and sewer services to the lot when the bottle depot was built as we knew there was a proposed development for the space.” He went on to say, “Any new development, residential or commercial, would qualify for the three year property tax exemption under our Three for Free program.” He said the program seems to be working as they have seen an increase in both over the last year. Back in October of 2020 Mundare town council approved a tax incentive policy to encourage development of residential housing, and/or commercial and industrial businesses by providing a short term municipal property tax exemption. To qualify for a tax incentive, the development must be new construction or an addition to an existing building that increases the assessment by $100,000. The tax exemption rates are covered 100 percent during construction and for three years after the completion of construction. Craig MacInnes, President of Deploya Global Connections, is developing 13 new homes in the Whitetail Crossing subdivision adjacent to the Whitetail Crossing Golf Club. Jeff Ulan of JeffCo Enterprise Inc. is the general contractor for the project. He said they are currently constructing three homes that he expects to be completed in September. He plans to start on the other houses in the develth opment after that. Saric said that, “Although we haven’t

Street and 52 Avenue. Raj Nanuan is one of three partners in the business, and said, “It all happened so fast.” After viewing the building a couple of weeks ago they made the decision to acquire the 10,600 sq. ft. facility. “It was a good size and fit,” added Nanuan. Nanuan, along with his business partners Paul Nanuan and Sundeep Singh, are very excited and plan to be operational in three months. He also relies on the expertise of his wife Roxanne who specializes in marketing. Nanuan said they manufacture a wide variety of products under the brand Hemp Brewing and Distilling Corp. They manufacture things such as six pack rings, paper and plastic bags, thermal paper, drink mixes, liquor accessories and distillery equipment. Nanuan said they use high quality organic rye, corn, and wheat to produce whisky, scotch, rum, vodka, mead, beer, and liqueur. “Consumers want high quality local ingredients.” He and his partners plan to deliver on that promise so customers will be able to see, smell and taste the difference. Primarily, they supply products to liquor stores throughout Alberta, but will

Modified Father’s Day Event a Trip Down Memory Lane

Rosanne Fortier News Correspondent

A Sunday drive was a trip down memory lane for attendees of the Modified Father’s Day Event on June 20 at the Vegreville Ag Grounds. Vegreville Agricultural Society (VAS) partnered with Vegreville Iron Runners Auto Club (VIRAC) to host

this Drive-In & Drive-By Parade of vintage vehicles. VAS Director Derek Fox Co-Chaired the event with VIRAC President Bill Smolak. Fox said they decided to modify this event because they couldn’t have people moving around on the grounds due to the COVID-19 restrictions. “We wanted people to have something to do and enjoy so we planned this modified event. VIRAC had a parade through town at the hospital and seniors residences. “It was called the Del Morrison’s Memorial Ride which was to remember Del who was a key member of VIRAC and the Father’s Day Event Committee. He passed away this past winter,” stated Fox. The parade went through town with about 40 vintage vehicles led by the Vegreville Fire Department’s antique fire truck who proceeded to the Vegreville Agricultural Grounds with another eight vehicles who were already there for the Drive-In & Drive-By Parade. Antique tractors and modern day farm equipment were also on display. Approximately 350 vehicles drove in to enjoy the parade. “Also, we had some gate prizes which were donated by Bumper to Bumper. Overall, I felt that the event went great. The weather was perfect, we had great participation from vintage car owners and local dealers, and the fans came out in large numbers,” added Fox. Roland Robert from Vegreville, owner of an American Motors AMX from 1968, was one of the participants at the event. “I never restored vehicles. This car was an original. I like vintage vehicles because they remind me

of the past. Otherwise, I enjoy showcasing this car and have shown it at this show a couple of times. It is fun to participate as I get to meet people and share my interest in vintage vehicles with them.”

Vintage Dodge Brothers Sedan Beautifully Restored Rosanne Fortier News Correspondent

Todd Foster from Tofield was at the Drive-In and Drive-Out Father’s Day Event at Vegreville Agricultural Grounds where he displayed his Dodge Brothers Sedan from 1929. “I have been buying and restoring vintage vehicles for 30 years. I believe I got interested in this because since I was young, I used to work on vehicles with my father.

Todd Foster. (Rosanne Fortier/Photo)

I have owned this Dodge for 17 years. It was hard to find the parts to restore it but otherwise it is a lot of fun to restore vehicles. I especially enjoy showing these vehicles to others and seeing the faces of children and young adults when they see my vehicles. I like this brand because it is different and there is too much of the same type of vehicles out there. Otherwise, this is the first time I have been to this show at Vegreville but I have been to a few other car shows. I went when there was one was in Chipman.”

Homemade products, vegetables, baked goods, and home cooked foods were just some of the items that adorned the tables of 11 vendors at the Vegreville Agricultural Society’s first weekly Pysanka Market for the 2021 season at the Vegreville Elks/Kinsmen Park on June 17. Lavoy Hutterite Colony had a booth where they were selling pies, bread, and vegetables. Norie’s Fine Foods from Ryley was selling canned goods, perogies, egg noodle BBQ chicken, and more that she made herself. Terry Semeniuk and his daughter Shawna Semeniuk were selling handmade tin and wooden flowers crafted from salvaged materials. Shawna also sews dog collars, masks, children’s clothing, and much more. Bev McCarty, vendor for Prairie Pride Farm, was selling homemade jam, honey, all natural lotion bars, and all natural bug repellent. She said she makes these prod-

ucts as a hobby and that she has been doing this for around three years. Davin Gegolick, vendor for Black Stripe Coffee, said he uses green beans from around the world and roasts them in his basement to make this coffee. Blading for Bees also held a spot at the market where Zachariah Choboter, founder and team lead, along with Executive Director Rachel Choboter, offered attendees information and insights into the importance of bees and get them excited about the environment.

Ask the Guys Dear Classified Guys, I am the daughter of two certified pack rats and have happily continued the family tradition by becoming a queen pack rat myself. I throw nothing away and my apartment looks like it. This wasn't a problem until I broke my leg waterskiing. Now, with my leg in a cast, I trip over all the clutter on my way to the bathroom. However, I found an ad in the classifieds for a "chaos buster". That might be what I need, someone to help me organize. But will they make me throw things out? Will I have to organize myself or will they do it for me? If they do it, how will I ever find anything again? Please offer some insight for this limping clutter bug.

• • •

Cash: Well, it sounds like your

waterskiing accident has put you in the middle of a big mess…your house. A "chaos buster" might be exactly what you need. Carry: It's amazing how much we can collect. I throw things out all the time, but somehow, my attic keeps collecting things. Fortunately, you're on the right track. If you have trouble cleaning your clutter, it's always a good idea to get help.

Duane “Cash” Holze & Todd “Carry” Holze 06/27/21 ©The Classified Guys®

Cash: Professional organizers

offer a variety of services. Some will clean out for you while others can help you create an organizational system. The later may be your best option since it helps create a long-term solution to your clutter. Carry: You should expect a good "chaos buster" to sit down with you in the beginning and discuss the goals before the cleaning. For example, you may not need to alphabetize your food pantry, but it may be a good idea to throw out the two-year collection of magazines you've been saving, each for that one good article. Cash: You'll find that the hardest part is throwing away items you have an emotional attachment to,

but no longer need or use. Parting with those 20-year-old prom shoes can be a troublesome experience. Carry: And who knows what else may lurk in your closets. I have a friend who still has her girl scout uniform from 30 years ago. Cash: Your "chaos buster" shouldn't dispose of anything you don't want them to, but keep an open mind as you work with them. Be sure that the items you keep are truly important to you or you'll need in the near future. Otherwise with your broken leg, you could still be tripping your way to the bathroom. Carry: And next time, if you want to avoid cleaning altogether, consider investing in waterskiing lessons.

Fast Facts Cleaned Out

Reader Humor Clever Kid

To those who collect stuff around the house, cleaning out can be emotionally overwhelming. So if you want the process to be a little easier, try these techniques to get started. First, avoid cleaning the entire house all at once. Pick one room to work on each week. And second, don't go at it alone. Invite a friend over who can assist you with the emotional decisions on what to throw out.

Since only my son and I live in our house, I often ask him to help out. However, being a teenager, he looks for every shortcut to get the job done quickly. After the last holiday, I asked him if he would make room in the garage for our decorations. I knew it would be a task since we store practically everything in there from floor to ceiling. He mumbled a lot, but eventually made his way to the garage. Within minutes, he was back inside plopped in front of the TV. "I thought I asked you to make room in the garage," I quickly scolded. "I did," he replied. "I moved your car into the driveway." (Thanks to Chrissy H.)

Trash to Treasure Trash to one person can be a treasure to another. So if you're having trouble with something because you think it is still useful, consider giving it away to someone who needs it. After all, that mint condition baby stroller or the brand new sports jacket that no longer fits can be appreciated by someone else. Organizations such as The Salvation Army or Goodwill Industries can put that extra stuff in the hands of those who can use it. And get a receipt when you drop it off. Donated items can also be a tax deduction. •

WOODALL, Barbara October 18, 1932 – June 26, 2021 Remembering Barbara Just after dawn on June 26, 2021, Barbara Francis Woodall passed peacefully at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Vegreville, Alberta, in her 89th year. Born in the Green Point community of Prince Edward County, Ontario, to John Hott and Audrey Osborne, she was immersed in the life of hosting summer boarders long before Air B&B was a thing. Barb was an only child on a successful farm in the 1930s. There was always enough to eat thanks to a big garden. Her dad fished with the Tyendinaga folk so there was fish available as well. She went to the local school, by cutter over the snow in the wintertime, and then came into Picton for high school, boarding with her grandparents in their home on Queen St. That house became her home for sixty years when those same grandparents offered Barb and her new husband, Bob Woodall, married at just 19 and 20 years old, a rent to own arrangement. Barb worked at The Gift Shop for many years, after working at Stedman’s before the birth of their son, Blaine. For many years too, she was a Thursday night fixture in the Canteen at Carr’s Auction Sales. Raised Catholic, she embraced United Church ways when she married, and took an active role in several ministries at Picton United. At a time when Sunday school classes were bursting out of their meeting spaces, she served as Sunday school Treasurer. She served with the UCW as well. She and Bob befriended the ministers and their families as they came and went, including a certain young female student minister, who actually became family! Through the years, there were many delicious meals eaten at the Legion, and the summer Fish Fry at Church. The food and festivities that marked their 50th wedding anniversary filled the Church Hall to capacity, with so many of their dear friends and family present. Of all the delightful food opportunities in a long lifetime, some of the most special were the cones at Scooperman’s after a summer evening stroll down Main Street with her two grandboys, Jeffrey and Colin. For Barb, it was vanilla she wanted. Barb and Bob loved to Square Dance. They had lots of opportunities to travel to dance or simply to sightsee up and down the Atlantic seaboard, and across Canada. One particularly momentous trip was the camping holiday to the Calgary Stampede in 1971. It was then that Blaine, aged 11, decided that someday he would live “out west”. That is how a life-long resident of The County came to be in St. Joseph’s Hospital at Vegreville. The spring after she turned 80, Barb came out to live with her son and his family in the Viking and Vegreville area of Alberta. She settled into #12 at St. Michael’s Vegreville Manor, in a lovely one bedroom suite where she was able to stay until her final days. There were field trips to the Devonian Gardens, socials in the Manor garden gazebo, and entertainers to enjoy. She attended the Vegreville United Church with its suppers and lunches and musical events. She walked many miles around the Library gym floor, earning a special Walking Club T-shirt. One special trip home to Picton in 2016 was a cherished memory for Barb, a last chance to see people and places she loved lifelong. Now she will be coming home to rest with her beloved Bob, at Glenwood. We, her family, ask only of the life to come that there may be paths for her to walk without stumbling, held lovingly in the curve of Bob’s protecting arm. Barbara leaves to mourn her son Blaine and (Rev.) Carolyn, grandsons Jeffrey and Colin, sisters-in-law Eleanor, Sheila and Doris, her cousins Dennis, and Sandra, her niece Carol, and several other cousins, nieces and nephews. Her family shares their heartfelt thanks to Emily and Jacqui and the Vegreville Manor staff who gave so much love and care to Barb to honour her wishes, to Dr. Helen Frank for her compassion and understanding, to IRIS Vegreville for critical ongoing eye care, to members of the Walking Club for their welcome, to Al for his support, to Antoinette for her faithful friendship, and to Michelle, Gordon and Patricia for seeing her home. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be given through Autumn Rose Funeral Home to Vegreville United Church, and through Whattam-Hick’s Funeral Home to Picton United Church or Glenwood Cemetery in Picton, Ontario. blood for the 125th time during the Canadian Blood Services Clinic in Vegreville. Dee said he started donating blood when he was 17-years-old. The first time he donated blood was in 1975 when he lived in Innisfail. “I was an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) and a first year paramedic for several years; so I knew the value and importance of the healthcare system needing whole blood on a continuous basis. It was just a natural thing for me to want to donate blood even if I am afraid of needles, I still go and donate blood. I tried to give blood every time there was a blood donor clinic wherever I was living, but sometimes I couldn’t because they only had clinics during the day and I was working during the day.” Dee said he continues to donate because he likes to help people, and if someday he needs blood; maybe he will receive his own blood. “My goal is to make the 125 times I donate blood into 200,” added Dee. Dee Henderson holds his special certificate of recognition outside of the Vegreville Social Centre on June 14 after his 125th donation.

said it is a major accomplishment for someone to donate blood 125 times. “This type of accomplishment takes years to build up to. When you take into account that there is a deferral period between each appointment; for men it is 56 days and for women it is 84 days. To donate this many times shows clear dedication and passion for giving of their time and of course their blood for patients in need. The highest someone has ever donated is 1,300 donations of blood and blood products which includes blood plasma which can be donated every seven days. But for whole blood donations, 125 is very high. We welcome donors from all walks of life but people who belong to service clubs donate frequently,” Stryker added.

Rapid COVID-19 Test Kits now Available to Businesses Michelle Pinon News Advertiser COVID-19 Rapid Test Kits are now available through the Vegreville & District Chamber of Commerce. Chamber General Manager Michelle Henderson said they received a shipment of test kits last week and they are available free of charge to any business or non-profit organization. Henderson said the Alberta Chamber of Commerce had been advocating for the test kits and followed what had been done in the province of Ontario. She said the point of the test kits are to help mitigate the spread of COVID-19 more quickly to employees and volunteers. All that is required is for recipients to watch a short video on how to administer the COVID-19test and to fill out a check list. “There is a specific reporting structure so they would have to report to the chamber weekly.” The rapid COVID-19 test is not meant to be a replacement for tests done through Alberta Health Services, AHS. So, if an employee or volunteer test positive they

would still have to have a test through AHS,” stated Henderson.

The Good News Community Church members put together carnival and family games as well as invited event goers to join in on a family baseball and basketball game which had a wonderful turn out! It was fantastic to see the community together again! We had Kumson Electrical sell snow cones and was one of our scavenger hunt locations.
