Former Beauvallon area resident Joshua Kutryk will be the next Canadian astronaut to fly to the International Space Station. Kutryk has been assigned to a six-month mission that will launch no earlier than the beginning of 2025. He’s scheduled to get to the International Space Station aboard the Starliner 1, a new space vehicle built by Boeing. That news was delivered during a special announcement by Francois-Philippe Champagne, Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry at the Canadian Space Agency (CSA) headquarters near Montreal on Nov. 22. Champagne also stated that Jenni Gibbons had been assigned as the backup astronaut for the Artemis II mission to the moon in 2024. Following the announcement, Kutryk shared his thoughts with reporters. Kutryk said, “Starliner is just being developed. It hasn’t flown with people on it yet. This operation will be the first long duration six-month expedition for that vehicle. For me, personally as I have said, I come from a testing background, that’s wonderful for me. I like working with that, but it’s also a really good spot for us to be as a country. Of course, any mission for Canada is excit-

Carousels can be found in many places. Most commonly, at the local fair, but also across the globe. It is believed that England created the first which was a steam-powered “mechanical roundabout” appearing in Bolton around 1861. The oldest carousel know is located in Hanau, Germany and New York City is thought to be the city having the most carousels. In Canada we even have the “Pride of Canada Carousel” located in downtown Markham, Ontario. Unfortunately, the Canadian Carousel I’m writing about is not the carousel you might first think of. Not the counter clockwise turning magical delight often referred to as a merry-go-round. Oh no. We in Canada are now the unwilling participants in an ever more popular scam that is working overtime to rob Canadians of our tax dollars that the government works so hard to extract from us. A carousel scheme is a type of tax fraud that involves moving goods around a circle of companies and then collecting tax refunds without paying taxes. Recently the CBC’s “The Fifth Estate”, reported that our very own Canadian Revenue agency (CRA) is in a multimilliondollar tax “dispute” with a Markham Ontario company by the

name of Iris Technologies. Iris Technologies sells and exports internet telephone minutes and by CRA records received more than $120 million in refunds between 2016 and 2019. According to The Fifth Estate, our crack team of tax geniuses (my words) at the CRA state they initially paid out $63 million in “illegitimate” refunds to Iris when facing “pressure” from the company to end an audit. Later the CRA attempted to back step, reversing their decision and demanded the money back with additional penalties and interest. Now there are several lawsuits and appeals in this one case alone. The details are quite interesting and it’s worth watching the report by The Fifth Estate. It can be found via CBC or on YouTube. In a statement issued by the CRA, they indicated that they have identified more than $1.1 billion in tax fraud via similar “carousel schemes” since the 2017-2018 tax season. Dubai-based tax fraud analyst Mike Cheetham, who is an expert on the subject of carousel schemes, stated that he believes, “There will always be criminals. They will always attack the low-hanging fruit. And your tax system is wide open for this fraud.” A scheme well known to authorities in the EU and UK, carousel participants pass goods around in a circle, failing to pay taxes when goods are imported but collecting a tax refund on the export. Each trip around the “carousel” increased the refund and profits for the participants. Quite often, no actual goods or money changes hands and the entire scam is on “paper.” In one example, the CRA refunded $43 million to a company that was eventually traced back to Pakistan. Not surprisingly, when interview requests were made by The Fifth Estate, both the federal minister of revenue and the commissioner of the CRA declined. The main difference according to Danish journalist Bo Elkjaer seem to be that while the CRA “investigates”, authorities in the EU are cracking down and those involved are being “hunted” by authorities and seeing jail time for defrauding the tax system there. Like many things, there is the “path of least resistance.” Instead of facing jail time in Europe, criminals move to places easier to exploit. Namely Canada and the CRA. Despite having tax treaties, extradition treaties and the ability to criminally charge violators, the CRA and our federal government seem content to do as little as possible in these matters compared to other jurisdictions. After all, it’s only our tax money. There’s more where that came from. Or haven’t you noticed? I can think of plenty of places Canada could put $1.1 billion to good use. Tell me what you think. The 50th anniversary cake

Rosanne Fortier News Correspondent Vegtel Engraving hosted an open house to celebrate their 50 years in business on November 23 with socializing, cake, and coffee. Owner Debbie Chilibecki said, “This business has been on Main Street for 50 years. We were renting in the former Legion Building on Main Street for three years and for 47 years, we have been at our present location. My dad Terry Soldan had started engraving three years prior to 1973 in the plumbing shop when he owned Tower Plumbing. My mom Anne Soldan at the time was working for the Attorney General as the Court Administrator in town. She would work at this store after work and on weekends. I was in high school and 16 when we opened up. I had an initial share in the business when we started. Now, I am the last person standing as my dad passed away in 1998 and my mom just recently passed away. When I started, retail business was a good thing. There wasn’t a single empty building on Main Street. When I was

that young, I figured I would engrave for a while and then when I engraved everything, I would find something else to do. Never, ever did I imagine that engraving would last as long as it did. It evolved and changed a lot. At first, we used pantographs and right now we use machines. In 1988/89, I thought of calling it quits and thought about selling the store because I felt that my shoulders, hands, and wrist were probably going to give out from handcrafted engraving. It was too hard doing this for 10 and 12 hours a day during busy times. The volume increased to we had five people engraving and five pantographs and we couldn’t keep up. When we started computerized engraving this kept us going for the next 35 years. Business over the year has been good. It is doing engraving that has helped us. We engraved awards, and desk tags for all the municipalities and town councillors, washroom signs, electrical signs for electricians for their boxes and stuff, grain shovels, and more.” When asked, attendees shared memories. Jocelyn Hryniw recalled that she used

to shop at the old building and continued to visit when the store moved here. “They carry a lot of unique gifts, a lot of Ukrainian and non-Ukrainian items, and they used to carry a lot of dishes but they don’t have as many now because people don’t use china anymore.” Pauline and John Kulak commented that they bought the original owner’s house of Anne Soldan who passed away. “We used to have a lot of visits with her and we are sad to see that she is gone. Memories we have from the store are if you needed something special you came over here. They have a little bit of everything and something for everyone. 90 Years Ago – November 29, 1933

There is good news for the young people of the town this week. Unless the weather turns warm again, the arena will open for skating at seven o’clock on Saturday evening next. Three weeks ago, with opening almost in sight, the warm spell came along and upset all calculations. However, a fair body of ice was held there and a few snappy nights will leave it in good shape. H.L. Bender of the Vegreville Chamber of Commerce membership committee reported a favorable state of affairs, in that while the committee had not reached its objective it had at least met with a favorable response. Over sixty-five members have been secured. Teare’s Bakery and Café in Ryley is very much improved in appearance by the addition of a row of booths with porcelain top tables as well. Mr. Dave Behrens has rented the old Fobes Hardware stand in Ryley and hopes to be kept busy doing carpenter work. The unusual weather has been the cause of quite a few unusual conditions in the Shandro district. The ferry has been unable to operate for over a month, yet there is crossing, but only by boat. The river refuses to freeze solidly, yet there is too much ice along the banks to safely operate the ferry.

75 Years Ago – December 1, 1948

For the first time since 1943, the Governor General’s Medal awarded to the pupil having the highest Grade IX Examination standing within the Vegreville Division has been won by a pupil of Vegreville Intermediate School. The young lady who applied herself faithfully to this business of going to school to learn something is Marion Hohn, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Gottileb Hohn. She was one of six pupils to receive Honors standing in Grade IX exams, in 1948, the others being Earl Hardin, Frances Wilson, Ray White, Bob Duke, and Bob Turner. Another town was added to the Vegreville district of Canadian Utilities Ltd. when Elk Point shut down the D.C. plant of Drs. Miller and Toss and connected to the new power line from Vermilion to St. Paul. Derwent, Clandonald, Hazeldine, and Dewberry will also be served as soon as possible after the new line from Derwent to Marwayne is completed.

Owing to the current energy concern in North America and especially in selected areas the annual Christmas Light-Up Contest in Vegreville has been cancelled. The contest was to have been carried out during the Christmas season. The Chamber regrets taking this action but feels it is in keeping with the national situation. Ernie Isley is congratulated on becoming president of the Lakeland Tourist Association by Travel Industry of Alberta president George MacDonald. Also congratulating Ernie were Jerry Wilde, past president of Lakeland; Blaine Alexander, zone manager; Don Lockhart, and Bill Likar, vice president of Lakeland. A broken Axle on a boxcar laden with wheat caused the derailment of nine cars on the CNR line just west of the bridge east of Vegreville on Thursday evening. Damage estimated in excess of $150,000 was incurred as the boxcars were twisted as a result of the weight being carried. Five members of the Vegreville school teaching staff were recipients of Bachelor of Education Degrees at the convocation held on November 17th at the Jubilee Auditorium. Included were Kate Dary, Peter Svarich School; Olga Furkalo, Queen Elizabeth School; Lillie Homeniuk, Peter Svarich School; Elsie Mudryk, St. Martin’s School; and Nellie Shymko, A.L. Horton School.

Village of Lavoy has applied to Alberta Municipal Affairs to have a study done which will determine whether to dissolve the village. The previous Lavoy village council had looked into the dissolution of Lavoy and started the process, however the current request comes from the current council. After two decades as administrator of St. Joseph’s Health Care Centre, Eugene Rudyk is still as involved in health care in Vegreville as when he first started. At the end of last month, Eugene also took over the administration of Vegreville Long Term Care Centre as well. With the third floor of St. Joseph’s Hospital also housing 15 long term care patients, Eugene is the one person who will look after us in our old age. Our complements to Bev Homeniuk, better known to us as the assistant to Ed Stelmach, Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Development. Bev was recognized for her leadership by the Northern Regional 4-H organization for her many years of devotion to the 4-H in particular and for agriculture in general. Bev is not only the President of Willingdon Ag Society but plays a monumental role in the local MLA’s office. Her volunteerism in the community is well-known as is her very pleasant personality.

Why are Conspiracy Theories so Popular? Michel Jacques Gagné Troy Media Contributor

On November 22, 1963, an emotionally unstable young Marxist and ex-Marine with few friends or job prospects, little respect from organized leftists, and an estranged wife who finally lost patience with his violent outbursts and political fantasies, took his rifle to work at the Texas School Book Depository in Dallas. It was there, from a sixth-floor window, that Lee Harvey Oswald shot U.S. President John F. Kennedy as his open-top motorcade drove by in Dealey Plaza. The Dallas police, the FBI, and the Warren Commission (the presidential panel set up by Kennedy’s successor, Lyndon Johnson, to investigate the assassination) all concluded that 24-year-old Lee Harvey Oswald acted alone. Yet from the moment of Kennedy’s death and to this day and despite dozens of other investigations that arrived at the same conclusion as the Warren Commission, it was and is widely believed by a majority of Americans that a broader conspiracy, i.e., that others in addition to Oswald, were involved in the JFK assassination. How should we understand this entrenched belief and the attraction to conspiracy theories more generally? As a start, conspiracy theories are always and everywhere part of human society. Stories about secret plots shock and fascinate us, confirm our deepest fears, nourish our moral outrage, and provide us with scapegoats to blame. One might hope that, in the age of the internet, the widespread availability of scientific and historical evidence would impede the spread of conspiracy theories. Alas, precisely the opposite appears to be happening. From the QAnon-inspired allegation that the world is controlled by a conspiracy of powerful pedophiles to the claims that Catholic nuns murdered hundreds of Indigenous Canadian children in the middle of the night to the belief that Covid-19 is a bioweapon engineered by China (or the United States), the influence of facts and reason upon Western public discourse seems perilously low. Sensationalism sells, and fear and anger make it attractive. While there exists an ocean of scholarship debunking these and countless other conspiracy sto-

ries, few people have the time, will, or energy to conduct a thorough examination of all the claims competing for their attention. They have even less time to study the mounds of countervailing research about conspiracy thinking in psychology, sociology, political science, and philosophy texts. We cannot ignore the wealth of evidence proving that real conspiracies occur. From organized criminal rackets to politically motivated subterfuge (think of Watergate as an example) and even state-sponsored assassinations, conspiracies do exist. The useful question is how can we know if a conspiracy claim is likely to be true? A conspiracy is a secret arrangement between two or more people with the intention of taking advantage of others. It can involve a plot to hide or distort information, gain or maintain power under false pretenses, or circumvent legal, financial, or political rules for personal gain. Given the number of criminal convictions every year for co-ordinated acts of fraud, theft, violence, criminal rackets, and murder, we can conclusively say that conspiracies are a fact of life. However, the ones we can prove rarely resemble the diabolical schemes perpetrated by the villains in crime thriller books and films. According to British philosopher Quassim Cassam, the sort of conspiracy theories that are most likely to be alluring and false usually serve as a type of political propaganda. They carelessly, if not malevolently, combine facts, unsubstantiated rumours, and discredited nonsense to stir up people’s moral indignation against a specific person, group, or institution. Unlike the work of responsible historians, scientists, and forensic investigators whose institutions and traditions insist on a high level of evidence-based reasoning, conspiracy peddlers fabricate theories that are deliberately shaped to ignite our outrage and discourage us from practicing careful inquiry and reflection. Those conspiracy theories are “implausible by design,” Cassam argues, precisely because they resemble a Hollywood script, not the haphazard and incongruent chains of events that make up the real flow of history. The more we know about history, science, and logic,

Vegreville United Church presented its Annual Christmas Tea and Bake Sale on Nov.25.

There were tea, sandwiches, desserts, baked goods, jewelry, white elephant silent auction items, and door prizes at this event. Coordinator Holly Cependa said, “We raised just under $1,500 and all proceeds went into the general account for the church. For me, the highlight was that everything went smoothly and we didn’t run out of food. We had lots of really good comments. As usual, we had a great team of volunteers, even some youth who participated in the Kids Klub and Obeying My God (OMG) Day Camp, Max Ordaz and Kira Konovchuk.”

Swearing in Ceremony for new Village of Andrew Councillors Michelle Pinon News Advertiser

Johannus (John) Van Vyfeyken and Chris Lupul were officially sworn into office by Mayor Barry Goertz during the regular council meeting on Nov. 22. The meeting moved into closed session to discuss the findings of the municipal inspection the village had requested and next steps in regards to the process. Mayor Goertz told the Vegreville News Advertiser that, “This document is still confidential and will be made public by Municipal Affairs once completed, and we do not have a date for that.” After winning a seat on council in the by-election, Coun. Lupul

said he was glad there was good voter turnout. He has plenty of experience in emergency services. He previously served as Emergency Services Manager for the Municipal District of Opportunity and was involved with the Slave Lake fire in 2011 as well as transitioning of ambulance services from local to provincial jurisdiction. He also oversaw the implementation of a safety plan for 375 municipal employees, developing policies and procedures and will bring that knowledge, experience, professionalism to the council table. In fact, Coun. Lupul made a request of council asking members to reconsider the motion it passed at its Nov. 15 special meeting to purchase the former Andrew School for $1. There was a deadline of

Dec. 31, 2023 imposed by Elk Island Public Schools, but Lupul wanted that date extended to March 29, 2024 to allow time for the Village of Andrew to secure letters of intent from potential tenants. Coun. Lupul said he was basing his request on lack of information or back up plan in case the charter school does not receive approval from the provincial government. “The reason I’m asking council to reconsider is that the Village of Andrew ratepayers can probably not afford to keep the school if it’s vacant.” He also questioned, “What is it going to cost to heat an empty building?” Coun. Van Vyfeyken said they should look at all options concerning heating an empty building and whether going ahead is viable or not. He voiced his agreement for purchasing the building, but said, “There’s a lot of work to be done on the building foundation wise.” Coun. Haight said as far as long term potential and a plan B hinged on purchasing the building, but admitted a longtime commitment for the village with it sitting empty was not viable beyond two years. Deputy Mayor Pickett said she was concerned about asking for another extension from EIPS and wasn’t comfortable with taking that chance. Mayor Goertz pointed out that council had been reviewing the situation of the past year and a half and said purchasing and renovating another property for an administration building would cost at least $1 million and the cost would go back to residents to pay off. “The most cost effective answer is to save this building, work within this administration building and then we have the opportunity to grow our village to push for the charter school and do whatever we can to help them.” In the end, Coun. Lupul was the only one to vote in favour of his motion and it was defeated 4-1. During the organizational meeting that was held following the regular meeting, both Mayor Goertz and Deputy Mayor Tammy Pickett were nominated for those positions, and both accepted their positions for a one-year period.

Texas with his wife Heather and their two small children. Both Joshua and his brother Matthew are test and fighter pilots. Joshua is also an engineer and colonel in the Royal Canadian Air Force. Their two sisters Natasha and Laura-Anne Kutryk are veterinarians. Their late father Barry grew up on Kutryk homestead and went on to become an RCMP officer. While living in Whitehorse, Yukon, Barry and his wife Kathy signed Joshua and Matthew up with Cadets before moving back to the farm near Beauvallon. Joshua and Matthew then joined the 341 Mundare Air Cadet Squadron. “They both loved it. The Cadet program is a wonderful program,” said Kathy. Former Air Cadet Commanding Officer Chuck St. Clair said, “I’m proud of my two cadets and what they’ve accomplished.” St. Clair said he was visiting a friend the other day and watched the news clip of the CSA announcement. St. Clair said he took several cadets for airplane rides when he was the commanding officer. “I did it for any cadet that received a scholarship. When they told me that I gave him, (Joshua) his first airplane ride I had to look it up in my log book to see!” St. Clair served in the Canadian Armed Forces from 1952 to 1972 as an avionics technician. After that he moved to a farm north of Ranfurly. “I ended up getting my pilots license after I got out of the air force. There was a flying school going on in Vegreville at the time. So, while I was visiting them one time, the instructor basically talked me into taking flying lessons. So, ironic as heck you know. But anyways, that’s how it turned out. So, I ended up with my own private pilot’s license.” Every once in a while, he can hear jets flying over the farm. “So, I know it’s one of those guys, (Joshua or Matthew). The last time one of them “buzzed the farm” was about a month ago. St. Clair explained that they have training routes they stick to and he’s always glad to hear them whizzing by. “It’s pretty good to know they haven’t forgotten me.” RCL Branch No. 39 President Terry Kuzyk said, “The Vegreville Legion has been the primary sponsor for the 341 Mundare Air Cadet Squadron for almost 40 years. The Squadron will be celebrating 80 years of existence this year. In the ten years that I have been involved with the Branch we have had a strong relationship with the Squadron. Not only do we support them financially but we involve them in many of our activities on an ongoing basis. Over the years we have seen a number of their Cadets go on to have careers in the aviation industry and moved on to serve in the Air Force. Recently, the Squadron had to leave their facility in Mundare and we were happy to have them come to make our Legion Branch their home. Remembrance Day and Decoration Day would not be the same without the presence of the Cadets.”

Pulse Crops a Great Alternative with Growing Global Demand for Protein Michelle Pinon News Advertiser Robert Semeniuk is one of 5,400 farmers in Alberta who grow pulse crops. The Smoky Lake area producer started farming with his father who always incorporated peas into his crop rotation. He has seen first-hand the many benefits of growing peas as well as faba beans and has done so for nearly 30 years. Pulses consist of dried peas, beans, chickpeas, lentils, soybeans and faba beans. All are high in protein and fibre and low in fat. They are also cholesterol-free, making them a healthy option as both a meat and starch alternative. Pulses are unique among grain crops in their ability to partner with certain soil bacteria to take nitrogen, an essential plant nutrient, from the air and turn it into a form that can be used by plants.

Semeniuk is the past Chair of the Alberta Pulse Growers Commission and is one of two Zone 5 Directors. There are five zones in the province, and Zone 5 stretches north to the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo and south to the County of Paintearth. There are 16 municipalities throughout Zone 5, including: Smoky Lake County, County of Two Hills, County of Minburn, Beaver County and Lamont County. The annual general meeting for producers in Zone 5 growers was held in Vegreville on Nov. 16. Research Agronomist Mark Olson said he began working with peas and faba beans 38 years ago and has seen the development and commercialization of these crops and that lupin is a new pulse crop that is high in protein, low in starch, and a source of omega 6 and omega 3 fatty acids. Olson said it is a home grown plant protein source for feeding livestock and the nutritional quality of sweet and is considered similar to that of soybean. As well, the dairy industry in

Final Liturgy at St. Gregory the Great Roman Catholic Church in Holden

Group photo taken following mass. (Michelle Pinon/Photo)

Michelle Pinon News Advertiser Dave Maruszeczka did the honour of ringing the church bell for the final time outside St. Gregory the Great Roman Catholic Church in Holden on Nov. 11. Inside the chapel, nearly 90 people were assembled for the last mass that would be held there. It marked the end of 98 years of parish life. Celebrant Archbishop Richard Smith addressed the congregation by stating, “It’s obviously an historic moment and for those so long associated with this parish obviously also a sad one. It’s a moment for us to gather in the presence of our Lord Jesus himself and Almighty God and thank him for the countless blessings bestowed upon you and your family for so, so many years and to entrust our future in the hands of God who loves us and who always accompanies us.” Archbishop Smith spoke about the meeting that was held on Aug. 19, 2023. “Those who were present that day will recall how we ended the discussion and a recommendation was made to me that the

time had come to close this parish. It was a decision reached after very careful deliberation. Not everyone was happy with the decision, but it was recognized by everyone as necessary. What impressed me was the wisdom particularly to distinguish the life of faith from the building in which it is celebrated. As much as we love our church buildings, and we do; but what is of primary importance, of course, is the faith that emanates our lives. This parish will now close…but the celebration of our faith, our growth in the faith will continue, even though in different places. In fact, the wisdom that you display is born of your faith, faith in the love of God who is always with us.” Archbishop said it was fitting that the final mass would be celebrated on Remembrance Day. “Around the world we’re remembering the sacrifices made by men and women of the armed forces to their country and its citizens; and so, we do it here, too. At the same time, this final mass presents the opportunity to remember the countless sacrifices made by present and past parishioners in the service of

this parish since its founding in 1925. You have many memories in your hearts I know, and we thank God for all the blessings he bestowed upon you and your families throughout the life of this parish, and I thank God for the generous support you have given to it through its history.” Admittedly, Archbishop Smith said, “There is a certain grieving that accompanies this mass. Closing a parish is like a death for its parishioners. So, perhaps we can heed the words of St. Paul in the second reading as he assures us that we do not grieve without hope because the resurrection of Jesus and power of God has taught us there is new life from death and hope that emanates in our hearts right now.” Parish Priest Father Robert Lee recited special prayers at the Font, Stations of the Cross and the Altar to thank God for all the graces parishioners received by these

images and places and artifacts. Pastor Lee stated, “God our refuge our home is in you. You are greater than any temple, church or cathedral that could be built with human hands. Yet in this place we have met your divine majesty. This church has been a place of blessing for us, protect us on our way, and lead us to continue to worship wherever you should bring us. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.” Parishioner Annette Whelen was very emotional about the closure. “I feel so bad its closing.” Whelen said she always prayed for everyone and had always enjoyed the time spent together after mass socializing over refreshments that were served. Perhaps fittingly, parishioners broke bread together one last time during the potluck supper in the church basement following mass.

Some of the products that have been produced by Prolupin, a German based company are: milk and yogurt alternatives, salad dressings, mayonnaise, soft cheeses and as a fat substitute in creamy foods. Olson pointed out the drivers for lupin as an alternative pulse crop, stating that: • Part of Integrated Crop Management strategy, increasing the biodiversity of cropping systems • Soil rhizosphere is more biologically active when growing a pulse crop • Serves as a break crop and help reduce disease and insect cycles • Tilth (referring to soft soil with better structure) • Increased yield and quality of the following cereal crop • Small amounts of residual nitrogen may be found after growing a pulse crop • Lupin is non-host of Aphanomyces Root Rot Olson offered other advice to growers regarding lupin. Generally speaking, Olson pointed out that sales of pulse crops in Alberta equate to $750 million. “If you look at the downstream benefits of pulse crops, those people processing those crops, it’s an industry well over a billion dollars in Alberta. Two Hills RCMP Detachment Commander Stepping Down

County of Two Hills Benefits from Profit Share Program

From L-R: CAO Sally Dary, Sgt. David Henry, Reeve Murray Phillips, Div. 3 Councillor Dianne Saskiw, Div. 5 Councillor Elroy Yakemchuk and Deputy Reeve Don Gulayec. (Michelle Pinon/Photo)

Michelle Pinon News Advertiser After long and careful deliberation, Two Hills RCMP Detachment Commander Sgt. David Henry has decided to resign his position. Sgt. Henry discussed his decision after presenting his quarterly report to members of Two Hills County council. Deputy Reeve Don Gulayec made a motion to go in camera. That motion was carried unanimously. After returning to the regular meeting, Reeve Murray Phillips told Sgt. Henry they were here for a visit or support him. “I appreciated that. I’m sorry I’m leaving so quick,” replied Sgt. Henry, who began his position approximately six months ago. Div. 5 Councillor Elroy said they we’re sorry he was leaving. Reeve Phillips pointed out that the training and mentorship he’s provided to the other officers is very valuable and they will take it to heart. Sgt. Henry said he did feel comfortable leaving the four RCMP constables that are in place with another member expected to start duties in mid-December. “Rarely have I’ve seen a team jump in and help each other so much,” stated Sgt. Henry. “That’s a very good sign,” replied Reeve Phillips. Sgt. Henry thanked the county for hosting a town hall meeting in Myrnam on Oct. 25. He said it was well

attended and that more rural residents are calling in to the RCMP detachment to report suspicious activity. Sgt. Henry said theft of motor vehicles is down from last year from 27 to 14, which he said is encouraging and feels that is because more people are calling in and members are actively patrolling the detachment area. Sgt. Henry expressed concern regarding the number of break and enter offences which jumped from 14 in 2022 to 23 in 2023. He also expressed concern about increase in spousal abuse charges. “Drugs, the economy, a lot of things factor into that.” While not a lot can be done about those factors, Sgt. Henry said the sooner Victim Services is out assisting victims, the sooner they can access available resources. Div. 3 Councillor Dianne Saskiw asked what is going to happen with Victim Services after 2024? “We’re good until August, but after that we don’t know. They, (provincial government) say we’re not going to lose any services, but I’ve heard that before, and if they’re going to regionalize it, (Victim Services) are we going to have to call Victim Services in Vegreville or St. Paul or are we going to have one here? We’re not sure.” After fielding questions from council, members presented Sgt. Henry with a token of appreciation for his service to County of Two Hills

We think about the fleeting years Too quickly, gone for good It seems like only yesterday We would go back if we could. A time when Dad/Gido was always there, No matter what the weather. Always strong when things went wrong He held our lives together. He strived so hard from day to day And never once complained. With steady hands, he worked so hard And kept the family name. He taught us that hard work pays off, You reap just what you sow. He said that if you tend your crops, Your field will overflow. Our lives have been bountiful He taught us how to give In his firm and steadfast way He taught us how to live. Dad/Gido dwells among the angels now He left us much too soon He glides across a golden field Above the harvest moon. We see him in the summer rain, He rides upon the wind And when our path is beaten down He picks us up again. Love Terry, Shauna, Caylib and Hayley, Joshua and Kiara & Zachary Micklich

In Loving Memory Of Orest Kuly January 26, 1933 - December 3, 2022 Gone are the days we used to share But in our hearts you are always there The gates of memory will never close We miss you more than anyone knows Gone is the face we loved so dear Silent the voice we loved to hear Silent the music we loved to hear Never more than a thought away Loved and remembered every day An empty place no one can fill Forever loved and deeply missed Emily, Dale, Barry and families

EWANISHAN, Emily (nee Horon) January 22, 1933 - November 22, 2023 Emily Ewanishan (Horon) was born on a farm near Plain Lake on January 22, 1933, and passed away in Two Hills on November 22, 2023, aged 90. She was a rare person. If there was a terrible job to be done, she’d save everyone from doing it by getting to it first. She once brought her sick grandson, 10 at the time and staying home alone for the very first time while the family worked, a single red rose during the 15 minutes she had for herself. She treated those close to her with unwavering kindness and love, and never hesitated when she saw an opportunity to help. Emily loved to dance, she cheated at cards, she once dined with Princess Diana, she travelled widely, she loved floating in the ocean, and enjoyed a shot of good rum once in awhile. She took care of her own, she baked the best lemon meringue pie, her cinnamon twists were legendary, and Baba’s ribs were pure perfection. Even though she did not have the opportunity to complete high school, she never stopped learning. Her lily garden was a grand spectacle, and she gifted many rounds of bulbs to fellow gardeners.

She saw right into the heart of anyone who spent time with her, often giving gentle advice, sometimes repeatedly for those of us who are slower learners until we understood. She will be deeply missed. Emily leaves behind a daughter, Wilma (Don); a son, Leonard (Pat); three grandsons, Desi (Elize), Derrick (Katerina) and Jeremy (Laura); and three great granddaughters (or as she called them, her sweethearts), Emily, Annabelle, and Maren. She also leaves behind her sister, Elsie. Emily gave life her all and had no regrets. She is home with her husband, Larry, who has been sorely missed for 12 years. They loved each other right through life’s ups and downs. Baba’s best advice: Take care of yourself so you can be good to others, be happy, and remember, Baba loves you. Hers was a life well lived, and one we will look to for inspiration in the years ahead. There will be a private memorial for her next July, when the family will spread her and Larry’s ashes in their favourite place in the whole world. A Very Vegreville Christmas

Rosanne Fortier

News Correspondent

Vegreville Main Street and venues around Vegreville were transformed into a festive land without snow on November 24. Tourism Coordinator for Vegreville Michelle Gladys explained, “The Very Vegreville Christmas’s objective is to offer an event that brings the community together with free activities that all ages can enjoy. We had 13 parade entries. The Christmas Caroling was performed by students from Debbie Fedoruk’s Music Studio. “We had 13 parade entries. I would say the highlight of the night was the attendance. We had more people show up for the light up and parade than we can ever remember in the past, at least pre-Covid. That includes the attendance at the other aspects of the night as well. Yuletide Festivities Light Up Lamont

Michelle Pinon News Advertiser The Town of Lamont was a bustling place on Nov. 25 as various organizations hosted a wide variety of festive activities for people to enjoy throughout the day during the fun-filled annual Christmas Light Up celebration. The event is a long-time tradition in the community and a great way to celebrate the festive season with everything

from making beaded ornaments to decorating cookies and dog biscuits to making cat toys to shopping the holiday market to the festival of trees to fire truck rides to fireworks. One of the most highly anticipated activities is the countdown to the lighting of the Winter Wonder Lights display adjacent to the Town of Lamont administration building after dusk. It takes many volunteers and volunteers to put on the large scale event, but one that is enjoyed by hundreds of Lamont and area residents. Lamont Mayor Kirk Perrin remarked, “I am delighted to reflect on the success of the Winter Wonder Lights Festival that took place over the weekend. It was heartwarming to see our community come together to celebrate the festival season. The event showcased the warmth and unity that defines Lamont and I want to express my gratitude to everyone who contributed to making it a memorable experience for all.”
