As part of his prize, the Battersea-born actor and motivational speaker will grace the cover of the romantic publisher’s Valentine’s Day offering. He revealed that he was “shocked” at his win, in which he fended off competition from around 300 other entrants. Following a nationwide hunt to find a new romantic hero, Mr Hayles was deemed Mr Right by judges, making him the cover of the romance publisher’s, It Had To Be You, by Barbara Hannay and Nikki Logan. The selection process was overlooked by ex-Loose Women presenter Denise Welch, Strictly Come Dancing professional Robin Windsor and Rosie Nixon, editor of Hello! magazine. Mr Hayles hailed the win as “amazing”, citing, “I’m on top of the world. My face is on a book”, Mr Hayles exclaimed. ”Every time I look at the book, I’m still, like, ‘Wow ! That’s me’. Anyhow straight back to business, I’m very excited as one of my all time favourite authors, Terry McMillian, who has written books such as – Waiting to Exhale, How Stella Got Her Groove Back and A Day Late and A Dollar Short – is visiting the UK. Terry will be in Luton on 4 March 2016. Tickets to see her are £25.00 a head, plus booking fee. TNT will keep you updated via our daily online platform. There’s been a lot of hoo-ha about the lack of black nominees in this year’s Oscars and the lack of diversity in general. Jada Pinkett Smith has had her rant about it, most probably because her hubby, Will (a.k.a Fresh Prince of Bel Air) has not been nominated for a gong. Spike Lee strenuously denies ever using the word boycott, but still believes there is a lack of diversity, so regardless of the play on words, both film stars seem to be speaking from the same script, so to speak. The first African-American president of the Motion Picture Academy, Cheryl Boone Isaacs, states that The Academy will conduct a review of its membership to bring about “much-needed diversity in our class of 2016 and beyond”. She also added that she was “heartbroken and frustrated by the lack of inclusion”...err duh...How can Cheryl say that with a straight face? As the president, not only the first black woman, how could she have allowed this to happen and then to add insult to injury, come out with that ‘It’s not my fault statement’? Cheryl, if you tried everything you could and they ignored or overruled you – stand up and out the culprits, period! Racism against refugees, Muslims, blacks, Polish migrants and anyone that looks different or is disabled, is as rife as ever – both locally and globally. MP officers investigating the death of Joetta Shumba following a collision on the M62 have made an arrest. On Sunday 24 January 2016, around 5.20am, a grey Audi S3 and a lorry travelling westbound on the M62 between the Eccles interchange and junction 11 collided. The collision caused the lorry to overturn and significant road closures were put
in place. 25-year-old Joetta Shumba, who was travelling in the Audi, sadly died. A 29-year-old man, the driver of the Audi at the time of the collision, was taken to hospital with serious injuries. Officers swiftly arrested the man on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and he was returned to hospital, where he remains awaiting surgery.

The council believes that taking from their capital funding pot, which pays for one-off projects, will save money on a long-term basis. This is partly because upgrading the centres will involve the installation of new electrical and heating systems. Councillor Rosa Battle has remarked “The refurbishment of these centres will not only mean they are much cheaper to run, but it will enable them to attract a large number of new people to use them, at-
tracting more Mancunians to take part in healthy lifestyles”. In recent years the Town Hall has spent £27m building new sports centres, Hough End in Withington, East Manchester leisure centre in Beswick and new baths in Levenshulme were all part of that investment.
But the transformations within Withington and Levenshulme proved controversial as many were outraged to see the old Withington, Chorlton and Levenshulme baths close. The Town Hall insists that it will keep disruption to a minimum while the work is carried out.

reater Manchester Police (GMP) are hunting armed robbers who burst into a pub, tied up two witnesses, sprayed CS gas in their faces and assaulted one with a cash till.
Once inside, they entered the living quarters of the pub and tied up two of the occupants with cable ties. They demanded the victims hand over any valuables and open the safe in the property, and stole the mobile phones of both people they had tied up.
On 11 January, at around 3.15am, three men armed with hammers, CS gas and a firearm broke into the Church Inn, Cambridge Street in Hulme, via an unsecure bathroom window.
The offenders then carried out a search of the property, and when they came across two other occupants they assaulted both of them with hammers and sprayed them with CS gas.

24-year-old man who killed his two-week-old daughter has been jailed for life.
Matthew Higham of Shaw Road South, pleaded guilty to murder at Preston Crown Court in mid January. He was jailed for life, with a minimum tariff of 25 years. On Wednesday 29 July 2015 Higham collected his daughter, Florence Mae Collins, from her grandparents’ house and took her home to his house on Shaw Road South. A few hours later, at around 8.06pm, Higham made a call to 999 requesting an ambulance for his daughter, stating that she had started to bleed and have
a fit as he was feeding her a bottle. Upon arrival, paramedics noticed that Florence had several injuries, including bruising to her head and face. She was immediately rushed to Stepping Hill Hospital, where despite sustained life preservation treatment from doctors, Florence was sadly pronounced dead as a result of her injuries. Higham was arrested the next day following an investigation by Greater Manchester Police. A home office post mortem revealed that Florence had died as a result of a catalogue of injuries including multiple fractures to her skull and body, injuries “for which there could be no innocent explanation”, according to the coroner.
HER OR SHIM? TNT Mr L

e discussed sexism is religion in my RE lesson. I don’t know how we got onto transgender, but the children seemed genuinely interested so we went through what it would be like being taught by a transgender teacher hypothetically. One kid’s reply was, “I ain’t letting no teacher touch my hypotheticals, her or shim!” Some children, it would seem, are just not ready for a transgender teacher. High profile cases including that of transgender teacher Lucy Meadows that led to suicide, just further illustrate the stigma and archaism surrounding this topic. So if the education system and society in general isn’t ready, why are the Department for Education (DfE) offering money for transgender teachers. Transgender teaching still has major barriers. Times are changing; high profile transgender celebrities in the Twitter sphere have allowed the general public to identify and relate to this subject. Schools can apply for grants of up to £30,000 for actively recruiting transgender teachers. This applies for teachers from other limited demographics including race, sexuality and religion. This is surely a good thing, as students experience a wide range of teachers increasing understanding and tolerance? This act of positive discrimination has been condemned by some; suggesting that it merely prevents the best teachers being recruited into posts to provide room for those from selected groups. There are those who believe that employment solely based on a meritocracy is not only fair but also imperative to a just society. Does positive discrimination breed resentment, jealousy and general ill will towards the advantaged? Yes from some. But is that an excuse? Of course not!

Decision-making is the act of choosing between two or more courses of action and deciding on solutions to a problem. Some of us make decisions by relying on our ‘gut feelings’ or ‘intuition’. We take into account our past experience and our values. What can prevent effective decision-making: - Not having enough information. - Including too many people in the decision-making process.

t’s been a year since Federal Cafe set up its ‘coffee-shop turned bar’ in Manchester and the story thus far is one to admire. Having New Zealand and Australian influences fused together, in conception and living reality, Federal is making contemporary definitions that are somewhat unique to themselves. And that’s bold for a small cafe in the centre of Manchester city centre by the periphery of the ever-trendy Northern Quarter - opposite Manchester Arndale.
to feed their refined-dining regimes. The succulent poached eggs laying on streaks of bacon and buttery kale atop toasted sourdough bread are a match made in the southern hemisphere where such mixtures are commonplace. The runny egg and crispy bacon combo brings a rich and creamy taste with each morsel that you immediately get why this works as both a breaky and lunch option. A suggestion for this dish would be to serve untoasted sourdough as the toasted version was rather stiff.
First up from the menu was the Eggs Benedict dish (£6.50 – 7.50). It’s one of those dishes clean-eaters choose

Taraji P. Henson took home the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a drama last month in the 73rd annual ceremony. The actress handed out cookies to the audience in celebration of Empire’s beloved character Cookie Lyon. As the Golden Globes began to circulate the “wrap it up” music, Henson responded immediately and in a commanding manner, by stating “I’ve waited 20 years for this, don’t tell me to wrap it up. You’re gonna wait”.
He made groundbreaking history in the film industry. He also paved the way for many black actors and actresses. Now the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) is granting him its highest honour – The Fellowship – at the BAFTA Film Awards on 14 February 2016.

t would probably be an over-simplification to say that if China sneezes, then Sub-Saharan Africa gets a head cold. But there is no doubt that the rapid development of the region’s largest trading partner over the last two decades, has had positive spillovers for much of the latter. In particular, China’s rapid industrialisation and infrastructural build-up underpinned a sharp jump in the demand for, and the prices of, SSA’s key commodity exports – such as oil, iron-ore, copper and platinum. But China’s increasing transition towards domestic consumption, rather than investment and exports, has seen its growth rate slow markedly from the double-digit rates seen earlier in the century.
The concomitant fall in demand for minerals and other raw materials, has underpinned a sharp decline in Africa’s export earnings, investment and growth rates. Rather than lament about any short-term pain, many SSA finance ministries are sensing a huge opportunity for long-term benefit. This stems from the view that the economic relationship was, in fact, a continuation of a familiar timeline. As the ex-Governor of Nigeria’s central bank put it in 2013, “China takes from us primary goods and sells us manufactured ones. This was also the essence of colonialism. China is capable of the same form of exploitation as the west. China is a major contributor to the de-industrialisation of Africa and thus African underdevelopment.

support group helping businesses in Greater Manchester affected by floods has received an additional £5,000 from NatWest Bank. The bank is donating a total of £25,000 to five charities that are leading efforts to support businesses affected by the devas-

NatWest has also been supporting customers and businesses across Greater Manchester through volunteer work and fundraising. This will come as great news to business owners in places such as Salford, who saw their worst
floods in 70 years due to the extreme weather conditions over the end-of-year festive period.
Additionally, the money donated has also been released to the local authorities in Bolton, Bury, Manchester, Wigan and Rochdale. Richard Topliss, Chairman of the North Region Board for RBS (the parent organisation group for Natwest Bank) said, “We are
delighted to support the Greater Manchester Flood Recovery Appeal in its efforts to help and aid those impacted by the floods. And I thank all our staff who have dedicated their time to those in need”. P
opular real-time messaging app WhatsApp announced on Monday 18 January 2016 that it will no longer be charging customers subscription fees, after their first free year with the service. The company stated that the approach of giving users a free year with the app, and then removing its features “hasn’t worked well”, since some customers didn’t have credit or debit cards they could use to continue the service, potentially losing contact with friends
and family after being blocked behind a paywall. For many years, the app has asked some people to pay a fee for using WhatsApp after their first year. As the app has grown, it has found that this approach hasn’t worked well. According to WhatsApp, many users don’t have a debit or credit card number and they worried they’d lose access to their friends and family after their first year. So over the next several weeks, the app will remove fees from the different versions of its app and “WhatsApp will no longer charge you for our service”, a statement released by WhatsApp read.
WhatsApp confirmed that the messaging service is switching to a custom monetisation model that still won’t center around third-party advertisements. Starting this year, the company will begin testing tools that let users interact with businesses that they care about, which “could mean communicating with your bank about whether a re-
cent transaction was fraudulent, or with an airline about a delayed flight”, it says.
