The Budget IN Real terms

The UK’s economic performance has failed to meet forecasts set by the Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne and the Office of Budget Responsibility (OBR), in 2010.

look who’s reading TNT

‘ ‘ T HI S I S A Last year Manchester had Cleo Higgins singing her heart out and the city has always featured prominently on TV’s talent shows with the likes of Misha B and Shane Ward. Speaking to TNT before the show Chris, from Fallowfield, although confident in his ability, was doubtful of his chances. He said, “I know I’m not going to win, everyone’s behind Christina Marie, I’m just preparing myself for my exit on Saturday.” Despite this, the young singer with a love for jazz was determined to go out on his terms and with his dignity intact. He added, “this time I have asked Ricky to allow me to pick my own clothes and setting along with the song Smile, so at least I will exit my way, I thank him for that!” Before the show Chris seemed stressed and a little anxious, but his obvious talent, cool head and professional attitude saw him deliver a performance to remember, with panel judges offering comments of admiration after singing his version of the old Nat King Cole song. Leg-

endary entertainer Tom Jones said he thought Chris “could be in the final with that performance,” while Ricky Wilson said, “all along I was hoping to find an artist and we’ve found one.” Other standout performances came from finalists Jermaine, Sally and Jamie as well as Bizzie who missed out on a place in the next round as Christina Marie booked her spot, meaning that each of the judges had a singer in the last four. Chris Royal is a TNT ‘one to watch’ for his beautiful, smooth voice and stage presence, and having won the hearts and minds of not just his hometown, but of the British public as well. As well as the semi-finalists, there were performances from Shakira and Enrique Inglesias. Next week is the final of the show, is Christina Marie really favourite to win, or do the others have a chance to pull off an upset?

y name is Paul, I live Whalley Range and have done for many years in flats and you post six of your newspapers through our door for everyone in the flats. I just wanted to ask you, what makes you think a Black newspaper would interest my block of flats as we are all are Caucasians. We do not feel this newspaper is for any of us and yes I have read it! At least for a year now. ... Hello Paul and thank you for writing in to ‘The Nubian Times’ and subsequently we have talked on the phone. As I explained to you ‘news is colourless’; we provide local, regional and global news. We have also now established that five people in your building actually really enjoy the paper, no question. Our target audience is indeed the BME community but also the wider community equally, we are edifying the whole community not just a small section. We do not exclude anyone from reading our newspaper, but encourage all thoughts and feedback positive or negative to get in touch especially if you feel you have any issue with the publication. As we started to talk over the phone, one thing was clear, you liked the newspaper and have found out much about the community in which you live that you may not have known if TNT was not delivered to yourself. And you have kept on reading it for well over 12 months! You also picked out key issues you thought we could implement for all the community to feel included, like making more people aware that this isn’t a black paper, by accessing radio and a marketing slogan and strategy to promote inclusion.

Why do men cheat? This is the question “relationship expert” Martin Stewart addresses in his new book Why Men Really Cheat. Stewart’s research for the book looked at the behaviour and attitudes of over 500 men, catching them in barbershops, gyms and on nights out to get the most candid responses from guys in their comfort zone and away from the repercussions of honest responses. Through his analysis of the answers and information he collected, he has identified 27 different “types” of men, using labels like the “charmer”, “enigma” and the “opportunist” in his break-down of the male sexual psyche. With “over 15 years of psychology experience,” Stewart has tried to take a scientific approach to an issue that is a hot

topic on TV, magazines and street corners. The delivery is somewhere between a study and a soap opera as the different anecdotes and narratives unfold. More than anything, Why Men Really Cheat is a piece of entertainment, laced with gossip but backed-up with insightful science and opinion from himself and other academics and their studies. After reading the book, Stewart believes you won’t be thinking about why men cheat, but asking what type of men cheat? The book is marketed towards women who want to run the rule over their man and guys looking to take a voyage of discovery into their own relationship psychology. Born in Moss Side, Martin Stewart went on to study at Ellen Wilkinson High School and then Loreto College. He became a mentor and provided “social-inclusion” assistance to students before becoming a teacher at the Hulme college himself. Can understanding the processes behind male infidelity help men to fix up? Or is this book a way to find excuses and celebrate a culture of cheating? John Amaechi

The name John Amaechi means different things to different people. To an American NBA fan, it might mean ‘British basketball player’, to a young Mancunian it may represent ‘opportunity’, to a member of the LGBT community John might be an inspiration and activist. Even to people in business the name Amaechi is associated with ambition and success. Amaechi admits himself that he is many things. He embraces these labels and has long used his many talents in his work as a psychologist, organisational consultant, high-performance executive coach and motivational public speaker. You’d be forgiven for forgetting that this man came from humble beginnings in Manchester. Who would have thought that the self-described “fat boy from Stockport” would go on to become not only the first Briton to play in the NBA, but also fulfill his lifelong passion of following in his mother’s footsteps and giving back to his community. “It was the plan from age seven to help others. Basketball was a sideline – not

that I’m diminishing it. I love basketball but seeing my mum as a doctor, not just prescribe medicines, but take the time to sit with her patients and talk to them, made me realise that that’s what I want to do as well.” Amaechi had an illustrious career in Basketball, as he writes in his memoir Man in the Middle. Having lived in fear of being outed, he finally took the plunge and officially came out to the world shortly after his retirement from basketball in 2007. “I was too busy with the NBA to deal with sexuality – nobody in sport who is serious about their craft really has time for a social life so my sexuality was a none-issue in that respect. I don’t

know many people who can enjoy a full social life as an athlete.” Homophobia and gay rights is an issue close to Amaechi’s heart. Like many in sport he struggled not with his sexuality but with the reaction of the people around him – his coaches, teammates and the fans. With Thomas Hitzlsperger being the latest footballer to reveal his sexual orientation, the issue of homophobia in sport – particularly football – is once again in focus. Amaechi believes that more should be done to combat the oppressive issue and is convinced that the best way to get the ball rolling is by educating children at school. nT

THE BUDGET in real terms

The Green Party are at the forefront of a multi-organisational campiagn to see Tony Lloyd step down as the Crime Commisioner of the Greater Manchester Police (GMP). The Chair of Manchester Green Party, Deyika Nzeribe, claimed Tony Lloyd is “out of his depth,” and is of the opinion that Tony Lloyd, former MP for Manchester Central, “should do the right thing and stand down immediately.”

Despite the rhetoric from the government, swallowed and regurgitated by mainstream media, the UK’s economic performance has failed to meet forecasts set by the Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne and the Office of Budget Responsibility (OBR), in 2010, after the Conservative-Liberal Democrat coalition came to power.

Estelle Singer

Released the final volume of her three-part EP – Love & Happiness vol. 3: How Stella Got Her Groove Back – to rave reviews

Examples of the shortcomings of the Chancellor and the Government are easily found in the figures. Despite overseeing an improving economy, this government has fallen way below its own targets. In this Budget, the gross domestic produce (GDP) of the UK is predicted to reach £1,788 billion by the time of the next General Election in 2015. In 2010 they had estimated the GDP to have reached £1,916bn by the same time. That’s a £128bn difference. To put it in perspective, that’s more than the Welfare Cap in this Budget, at £119bn. The Budget also reveals the ex-

tent of Britain’s debt. Osborne and the OBR predicted that the national debt (excluding the money used to bail out the banks) will total £1,439bn despite claiming in 2010 that it would be reduced to £1,232bn at the same stage. That £200bn shortfall is almost double the entire NHS revenue budget for this year which totaled £105.6bn. It begs the question: is borrowing over £200bn more than first predicted to increase the economy over £120bn less than promised, good enough?

Caribbeans call for reparations

Caribbean heads of government gathered in the island of St. Lucia last month to discuss the idea of reparations for the enduring legacy of the Atlantic slave trade. In this case, reparation is not just about giving someone money, like a victim of crime might receive in court. Reparations to the Caribbean nations means the cancellation of debts and deficits – a continued form of slavery – that shackle the island group and which were incurred trying to climb out of the depression the colonial powers left them in. It involves helping to repair economies devastated by centuries of having their natural resources exploited and shipped to the West and for the financial stranglehold the West has over these states through political and trade agreements and unfair markets. For the Caribbeans it also means official apologies and attempts by Euro-

pean governments to help restore the dignity and standing of the Caribbean nations so that, for the first time, these countries are given a fair opportunity to stand on their own feet; an opportunity taken by the colonial powers and never returned. The UK has a chance to now begin to make amends and that process can start with the government reaching out and engaging in open and honest discussion and by not dismissing the issues behind the calls for reparations. Did you know? When slavery was abolished, all slave owners were compensated for the loss of their ‘property’, yet to this day no enslaved person has received a penny

Lenny Henry lambasts TV industry

British actor Lenny Henry has spoken about diversity in UK film and television at a Bafta lecture with the Comic Relief presenter pulling no punches. The writer, comedian and television presenter called for a reverse in the scarcity of cultural minorities on British screens. It seems staggering that only 5% of the television industry is comprised of black, Asian or other ethnic minorities. In a homage to Martin Luther King Jr’s ‘I have a dream’ speech, Henry criticised an industry where between 2006 and 2012, the number of BME professionals in the industry dropped by over 30%. He claimed, “I have a ‘screen’ where the actors of the future are cast not by the colour of

their skin but by their talent alone.” While comparisons with Dr King perhaps end there, the comedian appears passionate and addressing the absence of proportional representation on television. According to Henry, “the evolution of BME on TV seems to lurch one step forward and two steps back.” He claims that “most talented [UK] black and minority ethnic actors are increasingly frustrated and they have to go to America to succeed.” He points to the increasing achievements of British BME actors in the States, “Da-

vid Oyelowo in The Butler, Idris Elba in Long Walk to Freedom, Prometheus and The Wire, Thandie Newton in Crash, Chiwetel Ejiofor in 12 Years a Slave,” though many would say that Hollywood is the obvious destination for any aspiring actor or director. Henry called on the BBC to dedicate more funds to BME TV and film productions and to nurture BME talent in media and the arts.

Policing Racism and Corruption the ‘known unknowns’

This month marks the 21st year since the racist murder of black teenager Stephen Lawrence and remarkably even in the light of a full public inquiry, we are still far from knowing the full truth of what happened within the investigation. Doreen Lawrence, mother of Stephen, was convinced from the very beginning that officers in the investigation were corrupt, sadly she was dismissed. Corruption has a very wide interpretation but is commonly defined as ‘dishonest or illegal behavior especially by powerful people’. There have been numerous allegations of Police corruption reported in the media and if you follow the ‘no smoke without fire’ theory there is much to worry about in terms of ba-

sic trust and confidence in the service. The problem is that racism and corruption allegations have gone way beyond smoke. A recent review of corruption allegations by eminent lawyer Mark Ellison QC confirmed Doreen Lawrence’s worst fears that the stench of corruption was at the very heart of the investigation of the racist killing of her son. Furthermore Doreen Lawrence herself was under surveillance by undercover officers. When Home Secretary Theresa May stood up in the House of Commons and expressed shock and surprise at QC Ellison’s findings, one wondered how such a learned person could be so naïve. Some may question whether she was being entirely honest given

her own cabinet colleague Andrew Mitchell was famously stitched up by a Police Officer at the gates of Downing Street. Just recently the UK Statistics Authority withdrew its ‘Gold Standard’ rating from the police service because of known repeated fiddling of figures. The Police Federation who represent Officers in England and Wales have been known to have secret bank accounts containing in excess of £30 million without any accountability. We now know of disturbing corruption and cronyism allegations at Greater Manchester Police in recent weeks referring to the Police Watchdog the Independent Police Complaints Commission. The very fact that this information is now

seeping out into the public domain is welcome progress. On a cautionary note, I am reminded of the cryptic words of Donald Rumsfeld, a leading figure in the US defense intelligence establishment: “there are things that we know we don’t know.” These are the ‘known unknowns’. The Police have a difficult job fighting crime and protecting people, they need the support of the public to do so. The challenge at hand in terms of building trust and confidence, is unraveling more of the known unknowns of the Police Service.

The views expressed in this column are not necessarily the views of the Police Service.

Of her task she said, “it’s going to be hard, as people generally want to look good but with little to no effort. The reality is we need to exercise and be more active and that sometimes involves hard work discomfort and sometimes aches and pains, but if it’s not hurting, it’s not working.” Chloe believes if people really want to get fit they should keep the following four things in mind: • Diet is key – carbohydrates are not the

friend of your bum, hips, stomach or thighs • Water is your new cocktail – hot, cold, with or without lemon, on or off the rocks • Continuous regime – if you’re training for three days (which should be your staple minimum) your exercise should be different every day. Exercise for at least an hour a day • Burn – leg raises, crunches and stretching every morning 3 reps of 20 for a flatter tummy

Chloe has worked in many roles which required her training expertise like coaching football and fitness. Her target audience for fitness focuses more on 20-40 year-olds. She says, “I like to catch them after their teens before they develop anymore bad habits and in their 40’s to prepare them for the change their bodies are inevitably going to go through in the upcoming years.” Chloe’s twin brother Earl walks past, I ask what’s his regime like?

Chloe laughs. “My twin brother, hates on me about my fitness regime, he says I got all the good genes, six pack, slim and can literally eat what I want, he just goes gym, he’s not as fanatic like me!” “Diet is so important it makes up 60% of your regime and exercise should be the remaining 40%. Going to school, coming home, now this issue is starting to feel very real. It feels like I have an alien living inside me, fighting for room or to get out. I sit at my desk listening to the teacher in one ear and my friend in the other, the baby kicking for attention. I’m going crazy under my cool exterior. The baby is screaming louder than all the kids in the playground. I’m amazed nobody else knows. Then along comes Michael and punches me in the stomach as he runs off laughing.

Race equality group launched to tackle race issues across the Criminal Justice System The National Initiative for Leadership and Empowerment (The NILE Group) was launched at the end of last month. The group specifically aims to tackle the issues of race and equality in the Criminal Justice System (CJS), which has faced several inquiries regarding its fairness. The event took place in Newbold Revel, Rugby at a national discussion about between Criminal Justice professionals. Chair of the NILE Group, Bevan Powell said, “all too often race equality issues within the CJS are viewed and tackled in silos.” He explained, “the police service tackles its issues in isolation to prisons or probation.” Mr Powell continued, “NILE presents an opportunity to address issues of race relations in a more holistic fashion.” The NILE Group is a consortium of various CJS-related BME staff networks including the National Black Police Association (NBPA), the Association of Black Probation Staff (ABPO) and Respect – a staff support network for BME staff in the Prison and National Offender Management services. It has been established to provide a fair, cross-CJS approach to issues of race and equality.

your

Alzheimer’s disease is the most common cause of dementia and involves a continuous loss of brain cells. Alzheimer’s is a

progressive disease, meaning that it will continue to get worse as it develops and there is currently no cure for it. Dementia is known as a group of symptoms linked to a decline in the way the brain functions. It will affect not only your memory, but also the way you behave. There are currently around 800,000 people with dementia in the UK (with around 60% due to Alzheimer’s). 17,000 young people are affected, and there are over 25,000 people with dementia from black and ethnic minority groups. The exact cause of Alzheimer’s is unknown, but it is more common in those over 65 and affects slightly more women than men. There are also a number of things that are thought to increase your risk of developing the condition:

Age (those over 80 are thought to have a 1 in 6 chance of developing the condition) Family history Previous severe head injuries

Lifestyle factors and conditions associated with vascular disease (when blood vessels become narrower and harder making it difficult for blood to flow through them)

As Alzheimer’s is a progressive condition, the symptoms change as time goes on. Early symptoms include:

Minor memory problems Difficulty saying the right words These can then progress into:

These include Donepezil and Galantamine, which are two of the more widely-used drugs, but their use will be dependent on the severity of the condition, and should only be prescribed by a specialist. There are also a number of things that you can do yourself in order to delay the onset of Alzheimer’s which include:

Personality changes Behavioural changes There is no single test to diagnose Alzheimer’s, so your doctor would ask a number of questions and perform tests – to rule out other conditions – before referring you to a specialist in order to determine a more accurate diagnosis. Even though there is no treatment for this condition, there is medication and support to slow down the progression of the disease.

Stopping smoking and cutting down on alcohol consumption Eating a healthy, balanced diet Having more regular health checks as you get older

If you need or want any more information on this condition, then you can visit a number of websites such as www.alzheimers.org.uk or www.nhs.uk. If you have any questions for me about this or any other health related problem then don’t forget you can contact me at a.titiloye@thenubiantimes.com, and I will respond to all questions.

Bergenias look lovely in the garden or in a pot on the patio whatever the season but really come into their own in the spring with beautiful, pink flowers. With the combination of vibrant pink flowers and lush green leaves, Bergenias are loved by gardeners and flower-arrangers alike. The leaves can be manipulated into different shapes, adding variety and creativity to any flower arrangement. A word of caution – Bergenias are particularly susceptible to slugs and snails and dry brown-rot can affect the rhizomes.

Pure, White and Deadly by John Yudkin

D

on’t be put off by the title, this book is all about sugar! How many people do you know with diabetes? How many people do you think ‘ate all the pies’? This unhealthy obsession with all things sweet will stop once you read this book. This is a self-help book about the perils of something that is found in everything that we consume. John Yudkin, a British physiologist and nutritionist, proved in 1972 that sugar was bad for our health but was rubbished by most of the food industry and medical profession. Had they all listened we would not have an epidemic of six month old babies who are obese.

With 1 in 4 UK adults obese, now is the time we find out about this sweet but deadly habit we all have. This book was first published over 40 years ago and is more relevant today than then. It is full of various studies which back up everything that John is explaining in an easy way. Thinking about going on a diet? No need, this book is a page turner and will educate you into changing this sugar obsession for good. Well worth the read on a subject that the food industry do not want you to know. After reading this book that extra teaspoon of sugar in your tea will seem insignificant if not take a little time to get used to.

Life as a Widower. In this he described how grief is always there and without mercy can engulf your very being. I have followed his blog and I can say that it is a very honest and open insight into a very private and personal matter. Despite this, it is one which gives you faith and the comforting knowledge that in times of immense grief you can get through.

very now and then we all need help and if we cannot find the answers to these questions from people we know then we can turn to a book. Now, if there is a self-help book which actually gets you to think about things in a logical yet inspiring way, it is this one. M. Scott Peck is a graduate of Harvard University and is a leading psychiatrist. This book is a spiritual journey, with the use of psychological reasoning, into making life better for yourself. It starts with the realisation that until we accept that life is difficult then we are not able to move on. This simple yet powerful insight is probably the hardest thing to realise. Let’s not mistake this book for an easy reading, self-help manual but one which may take re-reading to fully un-

Lei Jennings Singer

derstand and comprehend exactly what it is trying to explain. This re-reading of words is not a bad thing as we actually do not take written things in until read several times. Real-life case studies are used and he believes that the root of all mental illness is the tendency to avoid problems. There are references to God but not in the sense of ‘him’ being a separate entity to us but God in this instance is our subconscious mind. Nevertheless a positive read for the spiritually aware. This is an inspiring book about love, faith and happiness and well worth the read if you have the time. If there is one self-help book you have on your shelf then make it this one.

t’s not often that I write a book review about a book that has not even been published yet, so let’s call this my first preview. Benjamin Brooks-Dutton and his young son Jackson were left devastated when his wife Desree was killed on 10th November 2012. In his grief Benjamin started the search for other men online who had endured the tragic loss of a loved one. Unable to find solace in other men’s experiences he started his own blog –

In his blog he shares with us the little things in his life which mean so much. There have been many times I have felt the rawness in Benjamin’s description of his grief and then read something that makes me smile and even laugh. I admire Benjamin and feel blessed to have been able to share an insight into the strength that is allowing him to conquer his mourning. The book is published on 8th May and has already reached number 1 on Amazon’s ‘movers and shakers’ list. Benjamins blog has been nominated for the UK Blog Awards. I only hope that this preview gives his book the recognition that it deserves. The book is available for pre-order on Amazon.co.uk.

This Thing We Carry

I swear to you that this thing we carry beneath the cage of our ribs is an extremely puzzling creature. Even more astounding, are the countless feelings that flit between its two beats. By Yasin Chinembiri 11/03/2014 ©

hen I leave school I want to make a difference, this is important to me as I am going to be a doctor. My friends laugh at me because I want to study and be top of my class. I’m going to secondary school this year and my mum and dad say it is very important that I knuckle down to work. I can wait to start a new school as it’s a fresh start for me and I will hopefully meet new friends who don’t mind hard work. I may have never written in but Nawayne is great and if I don’t become a doctor I want to write for ‘The Nubian Times’ but I want to be a doctor first. I hope you can publish this so I can show my friends

Things and times change, parents do In order for things to have continuity, there must be development as well as sustainability. Humanity

is no different. The younger generation are expected to not only comply with the demands of figures in their own environment but to ones on a much greater scale. These expectations include doing well in education, as well as in non-curricular activities. One underlying desire that the members of the older generation seem to have is for young adults to be better than the last. Adults tend to issue endless amounts of advice in the hope of bettering the recipient of said advice and helping them avoid unnecessary hardships. However, it doesn’t always work. A 36 year-old male credited as ‘Jackson’ stated, “they – teenagers – are going to do and be whatever they want. No amount of demanding is going to change that. As long as they strive for good, they’ll turn out fine.” Although this is only the view of a particular individual, many share similar sentiments. As more opportunities become available, the roles and expecta-

On any night out I find it impossible to sit still. If there’s a beat I’m moving, you can’t hold this girl back! I’m not out to pull, I’m out to party!! The great news is, according to Harvard Health Publications, you burn about 180 calories in 30 minutes of fast dancing, if you weigh 125 pounds. If you weigh 155 pounds, fast dancing for 30 minutes burns about 223 calories. On an average night I’ll be out from 10.30pm till 4am, that’s nearly 1000 calories. Amazing news until I calculate the fact I’ve drank four Amaretto Sours – containing 170 calories each – two Jaeger Bombs at 300 calories each, a vodka, lime and lemonade – 195 calories – and a couple glasses of 0 calorie water. That’s just the drinks. Chances are I’ll probably grab some chips – about 480 calories – to help reduce the obvious hangover I am destined to meet on Sunday morning, totaling almost 2000 calories. That is more than my daily allowance in one night out. This is not a great way to dance off the pounds, in fact it is actually undoing all the hard work I have been doing all week. No more drinking only dancing from now on!

tions placed upon people become altered. If questioned a decade or two ago, the majority of teenagers were expected to find a stable job to support their family. Now however, parents are encouraging their children to pursue further education, e.g. university. As members of a group of future innovators, there are certain responsibilities we must fulfil, such as setting an example to others. That isn’t limited to younger individuals; by doing well and being a living example of what hard work and positivity can bring, we can inspire people on either side of the age spectrum to make personal improvements. Regardless of the fact that parents and carers try to sway us towards being doctors, accountants and so on, our goal should be to become the best we can be. “For what’s the point of breeding children, if each generation does not improve on what went before” – Hilary Mantel

am I burning dancing?

TnT Victoria Thompson

Dancing is and will always be my favourite way to work out. Whether it be salsa or hip-hop, street dance or even just random free-movements dancing – if there is music and movement you cannot go wrong. So after calculating how much good work I’m undoing dancing on a night out, I have complied a short list of dance classes and how many calories on average will be burned. Each burns different amounts of calories but every style can help with coordination, posture, core-strength, upper and lower body strength and of course mental wellbeing. Give the booze the boot and try these instead.

It wasn’t even that the student felt his peer’s clothes were ‘camp’, but the term ‘gay’ is now widely used to describe something as negative amongst youngsters. Seriously? This is 2014 people!? I was angrier than Sir Alex Ferguson in the 5th minute of added time. I reported the incident to the boy’s Jamaican mother and after an hour-long discussion, she agreed that he shouldn’t speak like this. Many of my Jamaican readers may be shouting scriptures back at my introduction. Leviticus 18:22 or 20:13, or that famous Jerry Springer dictum, “God created Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve!” The Times described Jamaica as the most homophobic place on earth – what does that mean for this generation of African and Afro-Caribbean children? Homophobia is an appalling facet of our children’s experience, especially among Afro-Caribbean students. However it is not the case that students openly discriminate against others because of their sexuality, as I teach students who are openly gay and the rest of the year are supportive. However, it’s the subtle nuances in our language, music and actions that lead to fear, disenfranchisement and alienation for our gay children. Compare it to racism. The racism I experience most is not that I am openly called “n!gga,” but when I go to my white friends and they say, “you look like a good dancer!” or assume that I am only good at the music section of Trivial Pursuits. It is these subtle, yet powerful messages that affect our children without them realising. The recent ‘coming out’ of gay NBA player Jason Collins and musician Frank Ocean have opened our eyes to homosexuality in the media but if we fail to challenge the subtle messages from our children and ourselves, we ostracise a large percentage of our youth automatically. The Parklife Weekender 2014 is set to transform Heaton Park into a powerhouse of UK and international music on the 7th and 8th of June. Get on it. Parklife returns with a typically enormous line-up spread over the two days. 20 years since the ‘G-funk’ era was in full motion, the 7th Saturday will see Snoop Dogg and Kendrick Lamar bring a Compton and Long Beach presence to Manchester with some of the weightiest tracks from over two decades of hip-hop. Public Enemy and Pusha T are up on Sunday 8th. Headliners Katy B and Bastille are also set for main stage performances. As always there’s plenty for the house heads, only the best in fact. Jamie Jones, Breach, Gorgon City, Manchester’s Ben Pearce (who doesn’t know ‘What I Might Do’?) and Catz ‘n Dogz. Garage vibes from EZ and MJ Cole and a bit of Soul II Soul for some classic UK sounds. Rudimental reassert their presence at the top of the UK bass scene after tearing up the main stage last year and Nero brings a deadly dose of dubstep. TNT’s ones to watch: We all know

about Snoop and Kendrick but our top recommendation is Oneman. Spinning anything from garage to grime, bashment to Aaliyah, my man knows how to mash it up and never disappoints. David ‘Ram Jam’ Rodigan returns for one of his trademark shows, exploring the roots and culture of Jamaican music. On the house and tech front Scuba, MK and DJ Koze and of course the Mancunians – UK bass collective The North Base and hip-hop act Broke n English.

Need for Speed is a film adaptation of the popular car-racing, video-game series. This film, starring Scott Waugh and Aaron Paul, looks to build on the success of the Fast & Furious franchise which next year will be into its 7th instalment. The storyline won’t win any Oscars but the car chases, action scenes and adrenaline-fueled stunts are fearless and make the film at times an engaging, high-octane adventure. There is truly nothing original here whatsoever, but for all those fans of the no-plot-pure-action style will find it right up their street. The story follows street-racer Toby Marshall and his last ditch attempt to save his failing business. With the help of his team, he skilfully builds and races muscle cars on the side then reluctantly partners with ex-NASCAR driver Dino Brewster. Just as a major

National Minimum Wage:

The Nubian Times

Taking pay higher

Superbrands UK

league table

February’s recommendation by the Low Pay Commission of a 3% rise in the National Minimum Wage – which covers over 1 million jobs – to £6.50 per hour from next October, largely passed by unnoticed. But many of us can recall the controversy which surrounded its introduction in 1999. At the time there were many foreboding assessments that the extra labour costs to employers would drive UK businesses to the wall with hundreds of thousands of jobs in tow. The truth has come to light with the NMW proving to be a triple-whammy winner. It has been consistently set at a level that has minimised any impact on jobs, while raising living standards and increasing work incentives. Even a Conservative Chancellor is now lauding its virtues. Perhaps because of this success, recent years have seen a growing chorus for a “living wage” of around £7.65-£8.80 hour based on a minimally acceptable standard of living. Although the wage

is non-mandatory in the sense that it only applies to those employers who can afford it, simple peer pressure and the threat of adverse publicity has seen many employers quickly discover sufficient reserves. The campaign, led by the Living Wage Foundation has quickly notched up supporters across a huge swathe of UK commerce. So is the much lower National Minimum Wage now redundant? No. The key lesson is not that the NMW is too low. A higher NMW may well cost

jobs, especially among the young. But there remain many companies who can afford to match pay more closely to the contribution of their workers, especially at the bottom end of the pay distribution. For a while the NMW provided a convenient cushion but it’s very success in raising income without threatening jobs has energised many workers to query whether they are actually being paid fairly or not. Who would have thought that the NMW be more springboard than floor? TnT

An active member of the Black Activists Rising Against Cuts (BARAC) group, Colette has campaigned against local and national issues such the Bedroom Tax, the EDL and cuts to services, in particular, youth services.

Still one of England’s most deprived wards, Colette intends to ensure that Moss Side residents have “better ac-

A former Parent Governor, she is passionate about improving the attainment levels of local schools in the area, such as Claremont Primary. Colette was also instrumental in the decision to see the Caribbean Carnival return to Moss Side’s Alexandra Park in 2015. Elsewhere, Catherine Higgins is to be the Respect Party’s candidate for Wythenshawe.

British Airways has become the leading brand in the UK for 2014, after it topped the recent Superbrands UK league table, beating Rolex to first place and surpassing the likes of Apple and Facebook whose standings dropped sharply, despite Apple remaining the most valuable brand in the world. It is the first time BA has been listed as a national leader at the top of a table that features 1,500 companies. Apple fell from 2nd place to 14th while Facebook didn’t even make the top 20 in the latest Superbrands survey. Chairman of the Superbrands Council, Stephen Cheliotis commented: “British Airways has always performed well in the survey but over the last two years its reputation has climbed to new heights, partly through the cementing of its successful ‘To Fly. Defiant Moyes

Manchester’s

faces the impossible

Ultimate Warriors

Amid reports of complete breakdown between players, coaches and managers, a last-16 Champion’s League victory has given the David Moyes precious breathing space in the Manchester United dugout.

United’s domestic campaign has been a disaster with the club breaking all kinds of unthinkable records and suffering historic losses and embarrassing points and goals hauls. Worst of all has been their overall level of performance. Moyes came out with an outspoken defence of his tenure and his position at the club. “My future has not changed one bit, I have a great job,” said the Scot after the 3-0 humbling against Liverpool. The former Everton manager would surely be as much relieved as delighted or proud of the club’s comeback in the Champion’s League against Greek champions Olympiacos, taking some of the sting out of 3-0 turnovers by Liverpool and Manchester City a week later. Recognising the significance of the Olympiacos result on the rest of the season, and perhaps even his career at Old Trafford, he said, “I don’t want to come out and say: ‘This is the moment [a turning point]’. But I hope it is.” The League is well and truly a write-off now with the champions facing a struggle to even qualify for the Europa League. There is some sense in the idea that avoiding Europe’s inferior club competition may actually benefit the team and give the kind of energy boost that has given Liverpool a more competitive edge this season. Moyes has to go all out now against next opponents Bayern Munich. On paper, United’s draw is perhaps the hardest of all but it offers Moyes a shot at coming out of this campaign with a shred of credibility. There’s nothing to lose for the rank

outsiders. Indeed, according to Moyes there’s a “few things” he’s seen in Bayern’s game that he “would try to work on and capitalise on.” But Moyes is no Pep Guardiola. United head into the last eight with Patrice Evra suspended for the home tie and the news that van Perise’s injury against Olympiacos has ruled him out for four to six weeks. Summer target Thiago Alcantara will also miss at least the first leg. Still, the thought of Franck Ribery or Arjen Robben up against Alex Buttner is terrifying but the Champion’s League really is all or nothing for United this season. TnT

p first, Mousah entered the cage in his usual, confident mood. With the aura of a man without a care in the world. His opponent, Mike Castell, also came out looking self-assured, staring Mousah straight in the eye. The fight started with Castell coming out like a greyhound, throwing a flurry of punches with some, small success. A brief silence fell ringside as Mousah’s fans looked on in shock. Mousah soon found his bearings as the sound from his supporters sent the decibels through the roof. The Fallowfield man took control of the fight, standing

It was the evening of the 22nd March at the Reebok Stadium, where some of Britain’s elite mixed martial artists (MMA) assembled to do battle. Two of these men in combat were our very own, local lads, Kane ‘the Danger’ Mousah, from Fallowfield and former UFC star from Withington, Brendan Loughnane. over Castell, raining down powerful blows to his head. The ruthless and devastating onslaught forced the referee stop the fight only two and a half minutes into round one. The arena went off as the referee gave his decision, but speaking after the fight, Mousah claimed he was still “not happy with the start” he had made. This says it all about Kane Mousah’s mentality. He doesn’t just want any TKO, it has to be perfect. The main event of the evening was Brendan Loughnane taking on Jason ‘the Animal’ Cooledge. Loughnane delivered a typically skilful performance, even throwing in a few party tricks with a spin-

ning back-fist attempt. This came at a cost however, as he broke his hand in the 1st round. It didn’t stop a fearless Loughnane as the crowd quickly became aware the Withington lad was a level above, with quicker, better movement and more skill. Even in the final round Cooledge kept coming forward in his attempt to take the FCC Pro Lightweight title off Brendan. But this was never going to happen. Not only did Loughnane retain his belt, his bout got fight of the night as well. With a deadly combo in Kane Mousah and Brendan Loughnane, Manchester’s MMA future looks brighter than ever.

Woods out injured

Persistent back pains have potentially forced American pro golfer Tiger Woods out of his defence of The US Masters at Bay Hill, one of the four major championships in professional golf. The acclaimed golfer has his chances of breaking legendary fellow pro Jack Nicklaus’ record of 18 majors scuppered following the abrupt injury. The present World No. 1, he has remained one of the top-paid sportspersons in the world for several years. A niggling back injury forced Tiger to withdraw from this week’s Arnold Palmer Invitational event. It remains uncertain whether, one of the most successful golfers of all time will be fit and ready for the Masters.
