Zika vaccine to be developed in Manchester TNT Billy Rooney

S

cientists in Manchester are to develop a vaccine against the Zika virus, which is suspected of causing babies to be born with under-developed brains. Doctors have described the virus as “a pandemic in progress”. Last month, the World Health Organisation proclaimed the infection as a global public health emergency after a violent outbreak in the Americas. With Rio de Janeiro as the host city for the forthcoming 2016 Olympic games, concerns over the virus have grown in recent weeks, as athletes and fans contemplate the perils and severity of it. Health experts at The Univer-

sity of Manchester have said that they hope to deliver results within 18 months, after being awarded £178,000 in funding. The grant was announced after the UK government said that it would increase its funding from £1m to £3m, for rapid research into countering the virus, alongside a £1m commitment from the health charity Welcome Trust. Scientists in other countries are also working on the creation of possible Zika vaccines. A University of Manchester spokesman stated that Manchester researchers hope to “test a vaccine based on a safe derivative of a pre-existing smallpox vaccine – the only disease to have been successfully globally eradicated”. Neville Edwards given prison sentence TNT Yasin Chinembiri

31-year-old man has been sentenced to one year in prison at Manchester Crown Court, for assaulting a GMP police officer.

The local freelance Health and Safety Advisor was convicted of Actual Bodily Harm (ABH) on 14 January 2016, after he bit the officer who was violently punching and elbowing him, whilst another officer kneed and punched him. Neville Edwards, from Moss Side, will serve 6 months in custody and the remaining 6 months on license. leader, Dr Tom Blanchard, said: “As we have seen in the case of Ebola, there is now a real need to act quickly to fast-spreading tropical diseases”.

Dr Blanchard also added that the Zika virus can cause serious illness, but “it often has no visible symptoms, so a vaccine for those at risk is one of the most effective ways of combating it”.

Speaking after both the prosecution and the defence’s initial recollections of the case, the judge said that prior to the defendant’s arrest, “it was asserted that he [Mr Edwards] wasextremely drunk and intoxicated and violent; that necessitated his arrest”.

A letter from the

Editor In Chief Hello all. Finally Spring is here, hurrah! But it hasn’t come a moment too soon. Personally, I was getting overly tired of the ‘four seasons per day’ we have been having lately – especially over the Easter weekend, thanks to storm ‘Katie’ that almost washed out the annual Easter Egg Hunt. The Easter Egg Hunt was a huge success, as always, despite the weather. At one point, the hailstorm, lightning and thunder showed no mercy. There was a moment when we were all huddled under a marquee like frightened sheep. Nevertheless, well over two hundred adults and children turned up for the annual celebrations, the Egg Hunt as well as the races, drinks, food and cup cakes. On another note, the media always seems to draw the shortest straw in peoples personal opinions these days. So nothing has really changed from past years then?! But in order for the public to read the news they want, they must ask their preferred media organisation questions and also provide information or guide them in the right direction, if you all are not getting the content you want to see. This also means sourcing news from your local online publication, and sharing the stories you find interesting and relevant. Newspapers are a shop window to the news but remember www. thenubiantimes.com is your source for diverse news. On a more serious note: There has been far too many freak weather incidents causing mass destruction and devastation - horricanes, storms and senseless bombings and terror attacks, in places like Brussels and Paris are the most recent recipients of the horror. But the questions that need to be asked is, should it also include names like Dominica, Lahore, Istanbul, Syria, Bangkok and the Ivory Coast.

E

These places have also experienced their own fair share of horrific killings – with children and women yet again the main victims there – but the world population as well as mainstream media, seems to be very selective on their sympathy and coverage, respectively. Now if this is truly the case, the question that needs to be asked is ‘Why?’ Is not the loss of lives felt equally, no matter where in the world the lost life is from? Are we not all human beings, first and foremost?

We have many organisations nowadays feeding the homeless but one that has stood out in the short few months is ‘FEED MANCHESTER’. This not-forprofit organisation is the brain child of Matthew Campbell and Leanne Cameron. People, we need take a leaf out of these guys’ book and help the needy. ‘The Nubian Times/TNT News’ would like to give a special thank you to ‘Chicken Run’ who offer free dinners to this organisation on a regular basis to enable them to feed the homeless. Chicken Run continually help community projects such as ‘Hands On Hair’ with their annual community Easter Egg Hunt on Easter Sunday, these guys truly know what community spirit really is. Last but not least ‘The Nubian Times’ and ‘Hands On Hair’ would like to thank all the children, adults and local businesses that have supported the Easter Egg Hunt over the past 15 years. See you next month...

A knife that was discovered in the garden of OJ Simpson’s former estate has been given DNA testing.

According to a new analysis by the Office for National Statistics (ONS), Oldham is the most deprived town in England.

According to Greater Manchester Police (GMP), a teenager has been arrested on suspicion of raping a middle-aged man in a Manchester’s Arndale shopping centre.

Coming up as second was West Bromwich, in the West Midlands. The study looked at levels of deprivation across the country. Over 60 per cent of local areas in Oldham and West Bromwich are ranked in the most deprived 20 per cent of areas in England.

Security staff in the shopping mall detained a 19-year-old man over the apparent attack in the Arndale centre’s branch of Next. Police were called to the scene earlier this month, over claims that a man in his fifties had been raped in the toilets of the busy department store.

The test results indicated that no information or DNA evidence could be derived from the handle or blade of the knife, as soil in the ground where the knife was originally found depleted. No other leads could be developed from the knife, including any possible hair samples.

Michael buffong directs ‘King Lear’ irected by Michael Buffong and starring ‘Rising Damp’ actor Don Warrington, ‘King Lear’ comes to Manchester’s Royal Exchange Theatre on 1 April, and will run until 6 May.

In 2013 Talawa brought Manchester’s Royal Exchange Theatre to life with a mesmerising production of Arthur Miller’s ‘All My Sons’. The company utilised a black cast for the very first time in the play’s history, and received grand critical acclaim.

The play will be presented as part of the jubilations for black-led production company Talawa’s 30th anniversary year. Talawa’s production of King Lear will incidentally be shown 400 years after the death of Shakespeare, who died in 1616.

TNT asked Michael whether he has done anything to modernise Talawa’s production of ‘King Lear’ to which he replied, “The writer of ‘Game of Thrones’ quoted Lear as his source material, so effectively we are as current as we can be with this

production without having to update it as it were. It’s relevant, it’s vibrant and it’s accessible”. Talawa’s has incorporated a mixed-race cast for their production of ‘King Lear’, which shrewdly hints at the idea of a black presence in England way before the 50’s. This concept rarely gets played out within other pro-

ductions of ‘King Lear’, but Talawa are on hand this time.

Edwards given prison sentence CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1 Back in January, Mr Edwards denied this claim stating it as “untrue”, as he spoke to TNT. “Two of the officers travelling in one of the vehicles that night said they didn’t see any of that [drunk and disorderly behaviour]” in court, Mr Edwards said. Mr Edwards posted a 12-minute video of the CCTV footage of the incident on his YouTube channel, which has sparked calls for the GMP officers involved to be investigated. The

was a well-trained procedure”, he said.

Speaking in relation to the manner in which the police officers handled the defendant in the cell, the judge began by saying that he found the footage of Mr Edward’s suicide attempt “quite shocking really”.

GMP has previously said officers were “required to use force to restrain the individual and remove his clothing for his own safety”.

“The officers saw that on the CCTV and went in to prevent him from doing so. They dealt with it very efficiently. It was a practised routine. By efficiently, I mean quickly, it

The IPCC received a voluntary referral from Greater Manchester Police (GMP) on 28 January.

Police Sergeant Witham, the officer who Mr Edwards bit, was said to have had several tooth-sized indentations on his left forearm and had throbbing pain in his arm. He had trouble clenching his hand or rotating his wrist, because of the pain and

swelling, the court heard. The court heard how Mr Edwards committed the crime whilst he was subject to a suspended sentence. His previous dealings with the police, “often involving fights”, the judge said, led the judge to deny the defendant’s application for a suspended sentence, as opposed to a custodial sentence. Mr Edwards, who has suffered from documented mental health issues, looked gloomy and worried as the judge gave his sentencing. continued online

sculpture made from melted-down seized guns was unveiled last month, in honour of influential peace activist Dr Erinma Bell MBE DL. The bust has been designed to immortalise the woman who fought to eradicate South Manchester’s streets of gun and gang crime. It was revealed by Police and Crime Commissioner Tony Lloyd at Manchester Cathedral, to mark her contribution to Greater Manchester communities. The concept of conveying the bust arose from artist Karen Lyons. In 2003, Erinma became co-founder and chair of frontline community group CARISMA (Community Alliance for

Renewal Inner South Manchester Area). The anti-gun and anti-gang advocate group was set up to enhance cohesion and to create life chances for young people, by figures from within the South Manchester community such as Erinma. CARISMA is still very much active and now sits within another charity called Chrysalis family centre. Erinma was a prominent force in the creation and development of local radio station Peace FM, which has been utilised as a peace advocacy tool. She helped to secure a 5-year license for the station against the odds, after initially being told that the sizable license wouldn’t be granted to an area such as Moss Side. Historic Chorlton Library refurbished TNT Yasin Chinembiri

n a move set to enhance the historic Chorlton Library, the Grade II listed building has been revamped. The library – the second busiest lending library in Manchester – received a suite of new computers and a new children’s library section, as part of a major refurbishment. The interior of the much-loved local library was improved with comfy new sofas, chairs, display units and shelving plus a dedicated space for tots to explore. Having been closed from Monday 29 February to Wednesday 16 March to allow the transformation to take place, the library reopened on Thursday

After celebrating its centenary in 2014, the library kept up to its much-loved character by having a ‘book-return box’ available for customers’ books to be automatically renewed – ensuring that no fines were accumulated by borrowers. Executive Member for Culture and Leisure, Councillor Rosa Battle, said: “Chorlton Library is a much-loved building, with more than one hundred years of wonderful heritage.

“Residents will benefit from a new, inviting children’s library space, improved access to new

PCs, self-service printing and a refreshed, more comfortable space to spend time in”. Chorlton Library was designed by the City Architect, Henry Price – who also designed

Didsbury Library and Victoria Baths – and was funded by a £5,000 donation from the steel magnate and philanthropist Andrew Carnegie. continued online

Our primary role is to restore these features and bring the quality of the interior spaces in line with the quality of the external structure”. The Royal Exchange was originally built in 1874 and was utilised as a significant textile trading exchange, fronting St. Anne’s Square. The building has an ample history and has not been refurbished since 1990, consequently the offices are now perceived as outdated and exhausted. Windows will be restored to their full light in order to allow daylight to probe the floor

Annual easter hunt’s egg-cellent success TNT News

or the past 15 years, Hands on Hair (HOH), has been throwing what some may call ‘a children’s Easter party-in- the-park’. On Easter Sunday, HOH held its annual Easter Egg Hunt (EEH) at Alexandra Park, Whalley Range, like never before. Following the growing success of the event in previous years, HOH decided to join forces with TNT for the third year running, to make the EEH a community occasion. This year, EEH had a surprise guest in the name of ‘Katie’... Storm Katie, to be precise. The storm which brought destructive winds, heavy rain and a hail-

storm across the country over the Easter break, did pass through Alexandra Park but didn’t stop the organisers of the EEH at the park.

Periodically alternating from sunshine, rain and hail, the weather was ineffectual to the day’s itinerary and cause. Volunteers scurried to help set-up the gazebo, tables with gifts and confectionaries and begin the parent and child registration. Prior to the gates being open at 12pm, eggs and sweet treats were hidden away amongst the bushes, flowers and trees. The children – over 200 on the day – had to essentially be like bunnies in the park – hunting for treats to munch on. As the Egg hunting kicked off, parents cheered on their little

ones, from toddlers to 6-14 yearolds. Face painting was available for all children, with games including piñata and 100metre sprint racing keeping the partying spirit when going between the rainy spells.

In the gazebo, was plenty of cakes, drinks and tombola – all eventually converged there for the treats and to hide from the rain outside the canopy. Hands On Hair thanked its sponsors and all who helped make a success of the much loved Easter event. The EEH main sponsor was MG Waste Management and local sponsors included: Chick-

Wigan man who orchestrated a four decade long campaign of sexual abuse against 11 different women and young girls has been jailed. 65-year-old Dennis Smalley of Hindley was found guilty of multiple counts of rape, sexual assault and sexual activity with a child at Liverpool Crown Court last month. He was jailed for 25 years on the same day. The court heard how Smalley’s sickening abuse started in 1971 and continued for almost 45 years, with the last offence recorded against him taking place in June of 2015.

Smalley’s first victim suffered at his hands for more than 12 years and was frequently raped by him, despite her screams and pleas for him to stop. He attacked his second victim in 1984 and subjected her to four years of rapes and abuse. Smalley treated the woman as a sex object and would rape her whenever he wanted, even attacking her just days before she had given birth and was recovering in bed with 44 stitches. Around the same time, Smalley was also sexually assaulting and raping several young girls, many of whom were no older than 15 at the time of the abuse. Many European doctors believe homosexuality is a disease

T

he revelation that many European doctors continue to believe that homosexuality is a disease has been chastised and slammed as “shocking” by LBGT charities.

I

’ve started giving my 6-yearold pocket money. We make her work for it, to help her understand the value of money. The value of money? What does that even mean? Doesn’t the value of currency change every day? Or maybe we are teaching her – more work = better grades = more money for your pocket? Maybe what we should be teaching is - less money in your pocket = low grades = the same for generations. There is still a huge disparity between wealthy children and students from a low income. Students that qualify or who have qualified in the past 6 years, are allocated more money to help close the gap. These students are known as pupil premium (pp). But how can there still be a need for this extra spending money for these children? I thought the internet raised all children anyway! Apparently this is a crude assessment, as PP students have a different home experience. PP Students experience around 500 words per day, compared to 1500 from a rich household. Also, a student’s vocabulary at the age of 5 gives the biggest indication of whether a PP child can defeat the odds. Primary schools get £1,300 and secondary schools £930 for each pupil premium child. Professor Gorard claims there are flaws with this system. He claims it to be a blunt instrument that needs more variation to be truly fair. I agree, but I think if the pivotal moments in a PP child’s life are set before they reach school, why is the emphasis and funding focused at school age? Research from Gorard is not a statement on the effectiveness of schools, but I view it as merely a suggestion that our children from poorer families need more support from day one, not when it’s too late.

outh in the scene of politics has been highly controversial. The argument that 16-year-olds and over aren’t capable of taking politics and the government seriously, stands out as one major problem youth face. In my opinion the argument that youth are not serious is quite stereotypical. When you look at Scotland and the last election; they made the decision to involve 16 plus into the voting scheme and they got more positive feedback from youth. Youth can take politics just as seriously as the next person, as long as they are educated and given the right information, and know the right places to look, to keep up to date with politics.

talking point the nubian times

lthough anger is an intense emotion, it is also a basic human emotion. It can be a response (physical and mental), to a number of provocations. Including, being attacked, threatened, frustrated, humiliated, disrespected or being treated unfairly. Even our childhood and past experiences can contribute towards the triggers that make us angry. Many people believe anger to be a negative emotion (and it can be). However, it can be positive if it encourages us to create and implement change. Nevertheless, for many of us, controlling our anger or a lack of control, can have a significant impact on our wellbeing and our relationships. Not only do we turn our anger outwards, but we can also turn it inwards. It’s like drinking poison and expecting the other person to die. Turning your anger inwards and internalising it can affect your mental health. Struggling to control your anger is very stressful. This in turn can lead to anxiety, depression, low self-esteem and can even lead to destructive addictions. However, like any other emotion, you can control your temper. It does not mean that you have to suppress your feelings. You can control your anger by: - Identifying and eliminating the triggers: Investigate what makes you lose your temper. List the triggers and then work towards eliminating them from your life. This may even involve having to make drastic decisions about our friends and partners. Recognise your anger signs and try to remove yourself from the situation. - Just breathe. When you start to feel tense and angry, try to isolate yourself for ten minutes and focus on breathing. Inhale and exhale deeply 3 to 4 times in a row. Breathing exercises can help you relax and lower your heart rate.

The argument that youth can be persuaded by parties and their manifesto promises, stands out to me as an uneducated dig at youth being too young. In reality, when we discover what any party may be offering, and what they are looking for in their future government, we can grasp which party would make a credible government, instead of lazily choosing any from a group. Politics could progress fur-

ther if adults gave youth a chance to show what they could add to politics and elections in future. If we were given the chance to vote or share our opinions on how we feel about politics, we could help improve future politics and bring fresh political ideas. After all, the next generation will be running the government; getting them involved with political matters that will affect their future is imperative.

- Work out. Exercise can bring down your stress levels. It can help to get rid of irritations and anger. Also, the endorphins (hormones) we release when we exercise make us feel good and less likely to feel angry. - Honesty. Be honest with yourself and try not to suppress your feelings. Express yourself and let your feelings out in a calm, measured and constructive way. It helps if you can share your feelings with a trusted friend It is important that you seek professional help if anger is having a long term negative impact on your life and relationships. Control your anger, before it controls you.

Dessert Republic: The home of sweet sensations

by Makeandoffer

Every year, at the end of summer, a party would be held on school grounds. It had been happening since before Summer Jacobs was born and never once was anyone the wiser. This year however, everyone was going to find out. Summer had planned a weekend of alcohol and bad decisions. So how she ended up trapped in the school with a deranged psychopath killing her classmates off one by one, she’ll never know. This is book is full of interesting, captivating and comedic lines that’ll have you laughing ‘til you cry, on the edge of your seat and emotional all in one. Mixed with naughty and nice, this book will have you reading until the very last page.

Hadley Jamison doesn’t know what to think when she hears her classmate, Archer Morales, committed suicide. She didn’t exactly know him, but that doesn’t stop her from feeling like there was something she could’ve done to help him. So to Hadley’s surprise, on the very night of Archer’s funeral, she has a run in with Death himself and is offered the chance to go back in time to stop Archer from ending his life. The catch? She only has twenty-seven days to do it. And if Hadley doesn’t succeed? Well, she doesn’t want to think about that. Written in Hadley’s point of view, the reader feels involved in the book and can relate to the character. As one of Wattpad’s award winning books, it’s well worth a read.

Dessert Republic’s pristine and appealing exterior reflects the suave nature of its beautifully designed interior – with a wide 15ft front window enabling natural light to surge through the restaurant. The vanilla ice cream was occupied with rich white chocolate chunks whilst a thick toffee sauce provided the cake with extra tang. The dish was finalised by the initials ‘DR’ being shrewdly lavished across the plate, in cocoa powder.

First up on the menu was a Ferrero Roche cake, which was selected from a range of fresh cake slices; all of which are priced at £2.50. The cake itself was a delight as the rich cream

Dessert Republic’s American stack pancakes were next in line within the dining expe-

The dish, which was partnered with a glass of maple syrup, was triumphant from the first taste to the last. ‘SING IT FORWARD’ MASSIVELY BENEFITING CHARITIES AND THE MUSIC INDUSTRY

ing it Forward is an inspirational project that was formed by ‘Shaw Star’ partners, Judith Shaw and Gordon West. Its aim is to fund charities through supporting the introduction and empowerment of aspiring north-west musicians. Judith and Gordon have been and continue to hold auditions for local artists. The duo will eventually select 10 people, who will receive the opportunity to write a song, choose the team around them and produce an official track. Artists will also be provided with the chance to work alongside songwriters and vocal coaches. The tracks will be made with the assistance of professional producers, who will utilise their expertise in the recording department. When all 10 videos and singles are completed ‘Sing it Forward’ will organise a series of big live events across Manchester. Festivals that have noted the greatness of its potential have already approached the project’s organisers in order to book their artists. Two of the projects artists will actually be playing at a festival in Irlam later this year, including a 12-year- old who is adept in conveying 50’s jazz and contemporary pop music. Each single will be accompanied by a video of TV broadcasting quality, and the tracks will be made available to purchase from iTunes. All of the money made from these talented singers’ singles, will go to the charity of their choice. TNT recently discussed the project with Gordon, who revealed “One of the local artists is working with the homeless, so he is working with a homeless charity to raise funds so he can set up vans and other ways to feed and clothe people”. At ‘Sing it Forward’ many of the organisers are working voluntarily and funding hascome from Trafford Housing Trust. I’m really into Chronixx [Jamaican reggae artist], I met him last year. If the musical marriage is right then yeh, I would produce something with him”.

Scheduled to take place on Saturday 13 and Sunday 14 August, the sprightly Carnival is a celebration of Caribbean music, dance, theatre and costume. The historical roots of the Manchester Carnival lie in Trinidad, where the first Caribbean carnival was held in 1833. Before this date, black slaves had been forbidden by law to partake in their master’s European Easter carnivals, or even to gather on the streets after nightfall. When these laws were repealed in 1833 and freedom from slavery was announced, black Caribbean’s took to the streets for their own carnival with song, dance and costumes that reflected both their own cultures and satirised that of their ex-master’s.

Misha came back to Manchester to “reconnect with what is important to me. I had to walk down some old roads to find my feet again. It’s so easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle in London, that there’s been times when I have lost my feet”.

Chop My Money TNT Jonathan Thomas

M

uch of the huge appeal of Nigeria’s President Buhari during last year’s electoral contest, revolved around his stare-you-down stance on corruption.

Although it would be erroneous to describe his previous mid-1980s stint in the hot seat, as an unqualified success, many Nigerians look back fondly back on his tough approach to the “abuse of public office for private gain”. Heads did literally get chopped. As might be expected, there is a straightforward link between more corruption and inferior economic outcomes. That side payment to secure a business license reduces the resources available to build my company, create jobs, and help grow the economy. In turn, this reduces the tax base available for the government to invest in vital infrastructure and healthcare which also inhibits national advancement. But how much does corruption cost Nigeria? Economists at PricewaterhouseCopers, the business services company, have recently estimated how much larger the economy would be if it had the corruption levels of reputedly less transgressive peers such as Ghana, Colombia and Malaysia. Although their methods are not foolproof, their conclusion that Nigeria’s economy would have been between 18% and 36% bigger in 2014 is not beyond the bounds of credibility. Even the lower end of the range equates to giving each of Nigeria’s 170m inhabitants an extra £450 during the year. With any luck, Mr Buhari will have his hands full.

Apprenticeships offer real opportunity TNT Business

F

our Manchester residents, who completed apprenticeships with place-making organisation One Manchester, are challenging the public to consider whether an apprenticeship might just be the opportunity they have been searching for. Jay-Anne McCabe, Amari Knott, Emma Connor and Daniel Marshall all trained as apprentices with One Manchester and now work in various roles within the Group’s operational services. They all have different stories to tell but as a group they are a testament to the fact that whatever your age, gender or interest, there could be a lifechanging apprenticeship that suits you.

Jay Anne began her two-year apprenticeship with the Grounds Maintenance Team in September 2014 and has recently completed her NVQ Level 2 in Horticulture, six months ahead of schedule. In that time Jay Anne has achieved her spraying and Japanese knotweed licenses so that she can now drive the work van. She is amazed by how much she has learnt about so many different aspects of the job, in such a short period of time. Jay Anne said “This apprenticeship has given me a different opportunity and an insight into the variety this line of work offers. You get loads of support and are given responsibility so your confidence increases”. Amari Knott’s life could have easily been steered in a diffe-

As well as presenting the Roses rivalry, the event also aims to strike a blow for Northern sport over the South as a record attendance is being sought after. Tickets are selling fast and the event could

break the previous record of 6,033 people, which was set by Netball London Live last year. Captain of Manchester Thunder, Sara Bayman, has remarked, “I think it’s a massive opportunity. With Netball London Live doing so well it’s put netball on the map but it’s important that the northern teams have something to compete with that. The Roses rivalry goes back centuries and we’ve got

teams that are full of local talent so it does mean something to the players too”. Meanwhile Stacy Francis, Captain of Yorkshire Jets, has stated, “It’s fantastic for the sport. Netball is at that really great time right now where its transitional and its growing and teams need to make those financial and commercial steps into bigger venues”.

National Taekwondo Centre opens in Newton TNT Sport

A

world-class facility, designed for Britain’s Olympic and Paralympic hopefuls, has opened in Newton Heath. The new National Taekwondo centre will also be open to residents of Manchester. The state of the art facility, which opened at the Ten Acres Lane Sports Complex on Monday 7 March, is the new home of GB Taekwondo and will give athletes such as Jade Jones and Lutalo Muhammad a permanent base – where all of their training and conditioning needs can be met under one roof. Local talent will also benefit from the elite centre, as it is open for schools and local community clubs to use for 46 hours per week. Members

of the GB Taekwondo squad greeted Federation President Dr. Chungwon Choue as he compered the official opening. Dr Choue stated “It is always a pleasure to be in Manchester. We have been treated to many world-class events here and I am always struck by the quality of the facilities and the passion that exists for our sport. The establishment of the National Taekwondo Centre, which will also serve as a World Taekwondo Federation regional centre, truly cements

Manchester as the home of Taekwondo in the UK”. GB Taekwondo has been based in Manchester since 2007, but the new centre means that for the first time elite athletes, coaches and administrators will all work together in the same building. The opening of the new facility, with its 900m2 training hall and 500m2 strength and conditioning hall, comes as the GB athletes continue to build up to this summer’s Olympics in Rio, starting with this month’s Dutch Open.

F

ormer Fiji and Leicester centre Seru Rabeni has died at the age of 37, the Premiership club has announced. The Bua-born back represented Fiji at the 2003 and 2007 World Cups and played for Leicester between 2004 and 2009, before joining Leeds. Rabeni also appeared for Fiji Sevens in the 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester and played for New Zealand club Highlanders. Nicknamed Rambo because of his tendency to marriage pace and ferocious tackling, Rabeni died at his home in Nausori last month. The Fiji village website said that the cause of the death was unknown but quoted his father in law as saying that he had been “sick for a while”. Leicester will hold a minute’s applause at Sunday’s Premiership match against Saracens at Welford Road for their two-time league winner, who scored 18 tries in 63 club appearances. He earned 30 caps for Fiji, scoring 10 points. Rabeni also represented the Pacific Islanders combined international team, who played from 2004 to 2008. Leicester Tigers chief executive Simon Cohen has remarked, “Seru was a lovely man, he was extremely friendly, very popular among the players and the staff. He always had a smile on his face. He always made light of even difficult situations. He generally brought warmth to the training ground and the whole of Welford Road”. Fiji Sevens coach Ben Ryan posted his condolences on Twitter, “Incredibly sad news to hear Seru Rabeni has passed away. Rest in peace big man”.
