Hands across the pond Unite in global protest

ince the killings of Alton Sterling and Philando Castile in America by US Police officers, the level of social unrest and reactionary killings has risen at an alarming rate. At least 8 police officers have been shot dead since, as tensions continually run high since Sterling and Castile’s videos did their social media rounds in July.

he World Mission Society Church of God group have been awarded the prestigious Queen’s award for Voluntary Service.

Amidst all this, Manchester held a peaceful #BlackLivesMatter rally that began at Alexandra Park in Moss Side, culminating at Albert Square. Similar protests took place across the country in London, Birmingham, Liverpool and Bristol, with more planned in other towns.

Representative members of the group were invited to Gorton Monastery on 4 July to receive the award, which comes as a result of their continuous hard work and commitment in improving the lives of local people. The award, which has the status of an MBE honour, was presented to General Pastor Joo-Cheol Kim and Senior Church Leader Michael King by the LordLieutenant of Greater Manchester Warren Smith and the Vice Lord-Lieutenant Edith Conn. General Pastor Joo-Cheol Kim said “I give thanks to God for allowing us the honourable Queen’s Award. I also give thanks to Her Majesty the Queen, all the Mayors from different cities and our neighbours in the UK for encouraging the World Mission Society Church of God at all times”. The group are well recognised throughout Greater Manchester for their exceptional work, vivid yellow t-shirts and bright smiles. The group have been issued with certificates of appreciation from the local MP Kate Green and all ten borough councils of Greater Manchester. continued online
