Firstly to all, our students, both young and mature, well done and congratulations on your results. For all the young school children and teens: a big hug from me and a round of applause from ‘The Nubian Times’ team. No matter what your grades or your achievements are, you are recognised. Also, your community looks forward to your future works and for the most of you, the legacy you will indeed leave as you are walking on the shoulders of giants! I encourage you all, month after month, to have your say, as I have mine through print. Engaging debate will forever be the fuel for enlightenment hence TNT encourages you guys online and through social media to debate. I’m always reading and appreciative of the comments that are left beneath TNT’s published work; whatever opinion you voice. Let’s be mindful, in doing so, not to be hurtful, racist or antagonistic - let’s not be trolls; it just ain’t cute. We are all unique individuals and life would be truly inconceivable if we all thought alike. On 10 July, there was a #BlackLivesMatter rally at Alexandra Park, where thousands in Manchester met to march in droves from Moss Side to Albert Square. I contemplated on whether to go and in what capacity – for fear of not seeming neutral or bias in any way. Then I had to give myself a reality check, ‘I am human and as a humanitarian, I need to go!’ Our black people are being eradicated of the face of this earth, at the hands of the police, globally. But also I’m a Mancunian, and we do not tolerate this type of

abuse of power. All TNT staff and I stand for unity in our community, not just locally but globally. Inclusion, not exclusion, is both our ethos and driving force, so off we went. It was a carnival of skin colours, ethnicities, gender, young and old and I was moved by the massive turn out in support of our global community Well done to all who turned out, the organisers and a special thanks to today’s youth who are so focused on tomorrow!

What have we got for you guys this month both in print and online? The Youth Charter’s Geoff Thompson talks to TNT TNT News

F

or those who may not know who Geoff Thompson MBE is, it is apt to begin by letting you know that Geoff is huge – both physically and metaphorically. The mammoth ‘potential-bad-boy-turned-good’, is the British multiple world karate champion and Youth Charter founder. Recently, the 6ft 6in man slipped into TNT’s cosy offices for a chat. Born in Wolverhampton, Geoff’s drive and ambition for change began at an early age where it transmuted his life from the streets to the stadium. Having lost his father at a young age, the former sportsman has been actively involved in working with the youth to inspire a better future for them. In school, he sold West-Indian patties; a mark of the drive he still exhibits to this day. Karate,

Geoff found, was something he needed as part of his mental and physical development. It was when he got his first black belt, that he represented Britain in the World U21 championships in Manchester at the Bellevue Centre in the 1980s. Having participated in 82 championships and gained 5 world titles, Geoff was honoured by the Queen in 1995 with an MBE. In the Margret Thatcher era, he joined the GB Sports Council, from where he has worked hard in showing how sport “can provide an opportunity for young people to develop in life”, he asserted. Ahead of the Rio Olympics, the 23-year-old Manchester-based NGO

organisation has been aiming to deliver the pledge of inspiring a generation, and “will be presenting our proposals in September once these games in Rio have ended; to make sure there are social, cultural and genuine opportunities for all”, he told TNT. continued online

Jamaican airports propose marijuana dispensers

In order to regulate the budding drug market and bring in more government revenue the plan was drawn up by the Cannabis Licensing Authority (CLA). This plan comes a year after the legalisation of small amounts of the drug in the country where marijuana has long been culturally entrenched. The kiosks in airports and seaports are planned to

However, there’s a loophole. The CLA chairman, Hyacinth Lightbourne, told the Jamaica Gleaner: “If [tourists] don’t have a prescription, then they can do what we call ‘selfdeclare’, and this will allow them to have the two ounces while they are here”. Marijuana, or ‘ganja’ as it is known locally, was decriminalised by the country’s Cannabis

The passing of these laws now mean that Jamaican citizens have the right to use the drug for sacramental purposes for the first time since the Rastafarian movement of the 1930s.

The law decriminalising cannabis, passed by the Jamaican House of Representatives, also includes the legalisation of “cultivation and distribution of cannabis for medical, religious purposes and natural growth”. Citizens can also legally grow up to five cannabis plants.

This year alone in the US, 136 Black Americans have been killed by police officers, with the youngest victim, Jorevis Scruggs, losing his life at the age of 15. The march started at Brixton’s Windrush Square at 4pm, and moved along Brixton road to the police station, Gresham Road and

Vincent Lee, 37, and his partner Jessica Osibona told the Press Association they came to the march as a mark of solidarity of the events in the US over the past week. Mr Lee said “It is a mess. Preston man jailed after buying weaponry from undercover police

Preston man who bought semi-automatic weaponry and ammunition from undercover operatives, has been sentenced to 18 years in prison. Gavin Rae, also known as Yakub Rae, was charged with possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life. The 36-year-old was also found guilty of attempting to possess ammunition with intent to endanger life, and three counts of encouraging the commission of an offence. Rae was sentenced at The Old

During the course of this time, Rae asked for help in restoring de-commissioned firearms. On 3 November 2015, Rae purchased a semi-automatic weapon, silencer and ammunition as well as a Baikal handgun and 16 bullets. The offender also enquired about purchasing a deactivated Uzi sub machine gun and converting it into a working firearm.

Rae was detained by armed police officers, subsequently arrested and taken into custody. Chief Superintendent Tony Mole from the North West Counter Terrorism Unit said “The calculated efforts made by Rae to request such a volume of live semiautomatic weapons and ammunition is deeply concerning, particularly given his background military training in the use of weaponry.

The sentencing follows an attack on a stationary tram which smashed windows and made passengers take cover on the floor.

Morton, who pleaded guilty to violent disorder and criminal damage worth over £5,000 at an earlier hearing, was given an 18-month custodial sentence suspended for 18 months. After kicking the tram and hurling abuse at the passengers, the trio then split up with Morton walking off across the lines, before jumping over a fence and then walking down a pathway which runs alongside the track.

The school’s Principal, Dr Takuo Matsumoto, gifted the Hiroshima Collection to English art teach Pru Wallis-Myer in the US before it came to the UK where it has been cared for by Michael Stevenson. Mr Stevenson said: “I believe that the paintings should be appreciated not simply as beautiful objects, but for the lessons they

I find it hilarious that my vote has the same vote as the YouTube clip of the woman who had a racist rant on the bus – who suggests it’s impossible to be black and British. No one that stupid should be allowed to have children. They’re too stupid!

During and post the referendum for exiting the European Union, there was a surge of internet searches enquiring what the EU actually is. The Google search ‘what happens if we leave the EU?’ spiked by over 250% after polls had closed. To make it worse there were videos of leave voters who only made that decision as an act of rebellion and regretted the aftermath the next morning. Teachers are increasingly concerned about the spate of racist incidents following the Brexit decision. These concerns are not exclusive to European students either. Fears and insecurity from the Muslim community has risen also. Some cases of students asking teachers whether the mosques will be closed following the referendum are documented in the teaching circles. Apparently £3.3m has been allocated for charitable organisations to help tackle examples of bullying, which is a start but will it make any significant difference? As a teacher, I say supporting school is too little. I know people of all demographics who voted to leave the EU, and I understand there are reasons that have nothing to do with racism or lack of intellect. The result on 24 June 2016 does however highlight an endemic problem with the views of nationalists of this great nation. Re-education cannot be based just on the students; it’s a national problem. You don’t take antibiotics until you feel better, they are taken until you complete the course of intervention, and the virus is eradicated. If you watch the video of the rants of the racist lady on the bus, you’ll see, she is not the problem it’s some of the 51.9% of the nation that may need education.

n the first day of the Republican National Convention on 18 July, Donald Trump’s wife, Melania, delivered her first speech of the campaign.

More than 130 free activities are on offer in Manchester libraries during the school holidays.

The speech seemed to go down well. However, it was quickly pointed out that there were some striking similarities with Michelle Obama’s speech, delivered in 2008 at the Democratic convention.

Dahl-themed activities include ‘Sublime Science’, where children aged five and over are invited to watch a ‘BFG’ science show, featuring snozzcumber slime, an airzooka and whizzpopper juice air rockets.

Malania told the crowd, “You work hard for what you want in life; that your word is your bond and you do what you say and keep your promise; that you treat people with respect”. Part of Michelle’s speech said, “You work hard for what you want in life; that your word is your bond and you do what you say you’re going to do; that you treat people with dignity and respect”.

Manchester’s Got Talent is back

S

ituated on the lively strip of Oldham Street in the Northern Quarter (NQ), Gullivers bar hosted the recent Pen:Chant event on 14 July – on a night which former Happy Monday’s vocalist, Julie Gordon, delivered a fantastic performance. Following a recent chat to TNT, Julie had a 30-minute set which was part of the 3-hour long event. Pen:Chant are an organisation that host events around the country, showcasing comedy, music and poetry acts, to name a few. So the NQ seems conducive to the organisation’s aura and vibe.

Manchester’s Got Talent

The Mancunian vocalist had never performed at this venue and gushed with excitement when she told TNT of her anticipation ahead of the event. Amidst an array of other performing artists, Julie took to the stage, after a couple of other acts warmed the mic – as if to ease her nerves of singing at the unfamiliar venue.

he biggest North West annual talentspotting show is back; yes, Manchester’s Got Talent (MGT) Part III is here.

This year’s event will be on 5 August at Manchester Metropolitan University’s Birley Fields Campus. In 2014, Akeim Mundell launched, organised and delivered this first free community talent showcase, which was a big success. With over 300 attendees, support from some of Manchester’s very own popular artists such as X-Factor semi-finalist Misha B, Rielle and Mr Zip from Britain’s Got Talent, the show certainly promises to be a summer 2016 highlight. Having no entry fee to the show means that the local community can take great benefit from the recreational event in a safe environment. Born from a need to showcase raw and brilliant Manchester talent with the view to grant individuals opportunities for success, MGT came to fruition with Akeim’s tenacious drive.

Effectively and justly serving to Julie’s set, a succession of short spoken word performances set the mood for a relaxed evening. First up was a comedy sketch duo, ‘Norris & Parker’, who had the audience in stitches throughout.

Since it’s creation, the event has helped create opportunities for both the young people and the residents of Manchester in the entertainment industry.

Nonetheless, Akeim has had to self-fund the rest of the event as he stated that “this year’s Manchester’s Got Talent Part III may be the last one, I aim to send it off with a bang”.

‘Empire’ made headlines from its very beginning for starring a predominately black cast – transforming television’s lack of diversity. Along with ‘How to Get Away with Murder’ and ‘Scandal’, ‘Empire’ is showing that a diverse cast can indeed draw in an astonishing number of viewers and impressive ratings. According to Fox data, the show is No. 1 amongst AfricanAmericans and Englishspeaking Hispanic 18-49-yearolds. The 45-year-old’s nomination is yet another addition to the show’s impressive pedigree.

A Brexit Backbreaker? TNT Jonathan Thomas

H

ow will the UK’s impending exit from the EU impact Sub-Saharan Africa and the Caribbean? In both cases, the dominant narrative revolves around the knock-on effects from an almost inevitable growth slowdown in both the UK and EU which will press on trade, tourism and investment flows. Over the mediumterm, currencies and equity markets from South Africa to Trinidad have come under pressure. There are also worries that both European parties will be pre-occupied with negotiating trade agreements with each other, and, in a commercial sense, more important players such as the US, India and China - thus pushing SSA and the Caribbean to the very back of the line. As any practitioner can attest, limbo is an uncomfortable posture for all but the briefest of moments. UK aid flows to both regions should be added to the list. The Cameron government has hit its pledge to meet the UN target of granting 0.7% of the UK’s Gross National Income in overseas disbursements to promote development. This equated to a little over £12bn last year, and outweighed the contributions of all other G7 nations with the exception of the US which gave around £20bn. According to the latest figures, Ethiopia was the largest recipient (£322m) in 2014, followed by India (£279m), Pakistan (£266m), Sierra Leone (£238m) and Nigeria (£237m). Within the Caribbean, Monserrat (£31m), Jamaica (£12m) and Haiti (£10m) topped the list. The Brexit wing of the ruling Conservative party, which is likely to be the source of the next Prime Minister, has long railed against these outlays, alongside the UK’s net EU contribution of £8.5bn, as a colossal waste of taxpayer money which could be better spent at home. It’s hard to believe that only Brussels needs to embark on re-evaluating its balance sheet.

After a year searching for a shop front, Julie moved into her Stretford Road premises in just three weeks after chancing across the landlord while she was scouting the property. Besides party supplies, the business includes an inhouse cosmetic and botox service with a registered nurse, Tia Calder Aesthetics, and catering services under the name Jules Party Cuisine. Julie added: “We dress all kinds of events; we do birthdays, christenings, funerals, weddings. You name it we do it basically”.

It’s been reported that 74-year-old Richard Williams, has been struggling with a number of health issues, after recently suffering from a stroke. The Williams family will be praying that they are all back in good health soon, and no doubt for a few more Grand Slam titles between Serena and Venus, before their retirement.

First, Serena took to Centre Court where she defeated Germany’s Angelique Kerber, to win her 22nd Gran Slam singles title. This achievement meant that Serena is now tied with tennis legend Steffi Graf, in terms of most wins since the start of the Open Era, in 1968.

Prices vary from £30-£60 dependent on when you book, whether you’re an individual or part of a team, and whether you sign up for the 5k or 10k.

Later in the day, she returned to the same court to face Timea Babos and Yaroslava Shvedova, with Venus. The Williams sisters beat their opposition in straight sets.

The event is organised by Macmillan Cancer support and 35% of the entry fee goes directly to the charity.

Kavanagh vs Sadura is set to be a close encounter, since both contenders came out victorious in their first two BAMMA fights. In her first fight, Kavanagh defeated opponent Hatice Ozyurt in 17 seconds. Sadura on the other hand took only 36 seconds combined, to defeat her two previous opponents, Alina Dubosa and Sylwia Zaczkiewicz.

Since being diagnosed with Sjogren’s syndrome back in 2009, Venus has had an up-and-down struggle with her health.

Her position is forward and she scored in her international debut. At London 2012 the team won Bronze, so will no doubt be striving to come out with a medal August.

This fight will be McCafferty’s first in BAMMA, but he has impressive kickboxing experience. Not only has he got titles under his belt, he’s also a kickboxing head coach, showing his expertise in the sport. Mckee on the other hand has had two BAMMA fight wins already, with the last

being a knockout against Alex Masuku in the second round at BAMMA 24. His first win was at BAMMA 22, against John Redmond and he will no doubt be desperate to secure the treble in September. The main event of BAMMA 26 is a showdown between Chris Fields and Paul Craig. This fixture is set to be an exhilarating spectacle, since the pair have reportedly already had a heated run-in with each other, months before the event. In an interview with BAMMA whilst discussing this, Fields said, “He’s not my favourite person in the world so I’ll have no problem punching him in the mouth. I’m sure he feels the same way”.
