acism is alive and well and living in Tower Hamlets, in Westminster and, yes, sometimes in the judiciary. These are the words of prominent black barrister and chair of the Society of Black Lawyers, Peter Herbert OBE. Mr Herbert spoke up about the existence of some racism within the judiciary, in a speech he made at a ‘Defend Democracy’ rally in Stepney, east London in April 2015. Herbert said he referred to his role as a judge during the speech, only in response to previous remarks at the meeting that the judiciary was all white and middle class. Subsequently, the Ministry of Justice for race discrimination recommended that a formal warning be made against him for the remarks. In November 2015, pressure was applied to Herbert to voluntarily refrain from sitting as a judge. In March 2016, he decided to sue the Ministry of Justice for suspending him. He believed the investigatory process into his speech had been discriminatory. A disciplinary panel has recommended that Mr Herbert should receive both an apology and “formal advice” – a dressing down – after the matter had not been handled well. The recommendation is to the Lord Chief Justice and Lord Chancellor. continued online

appy February people!

So we’ve finally waved goodbye to the January blues and 2016 woes. It is a shame that ‘real love’ has disappeared from the White House. America will be hard pressed to ever see the likes of the Obamas again, well maybe not in my lifetime, unless Michelle Obama decides to run for office in the near future. We can hope, I look forward to seeing the work the Obamas will do, away from the White House. I know there may be some President Donald Trump supporters out there. Now although I disagree with all of what he represents and says, I have to stay positive for there is no other way to steer on from here. Over here, we have our own Brexit proceedings to look forward to. Again, there are those who are for and against it, rightly so, because the world is made up of an assortment of minds. Thus different opinions are what should make us rich not the bigotry born of our differences. #Diversity is to be embraced, no matter the weather, so to speak. The key is living for what binds us all not what separates us. That said, farewell to the Obamas, they will surely be missed, checkout page 2 for the full story. Local Didsbury gym caters for women’s needs

I

t’s no secret that many women who would love to get fit or lose weight find themselves avoiding the gym.

This is often due to feeling intimidated by the judgement they could receive from a room full of muscular men. Women have a variety of gym-related worries. Some feel that men would stare whilst they were working out and others aren’t confident in using the equipment – just to name a couple. Waterside Leisure Club in Didsbury works to combat these fears. For over ten years they’ve had a ‘ladies-only gym’ as part of their facilities, which is only accessible via the women’s changing rooms. anchester City Council has launched a new parking enforcement operation against motorists who repeatedly evade parking tickets. The council’s parking services contractor, NSL, will clamp vehicles found parked illegally. This is if they have already had three or more unpaid penalty charge notices. Vehicles will also be clamped if the owner has previously ignored all attempts to contact them. The policy also aims to catch out motorists who are driving unregistered cars or untaxed vehicles. Drivers whose cars are clamped face a £40 release fee.

They will also be served with a parking ticket for the offence which prompted the enforcement action. Clamped cars will be towed away if the owner does not contact the council within 24 hours. Surplus income from parking charges and fines is spent on highways and environmental improvements. The new policy took effect on Thursday 1 December. Executive Member for the Environment, Councillor Rosa Battle, said the policy is ‘simple’ and ‘efficient’. This will catch drivers who ‘believe’ that the law ‘does not apply’ to them. This will stop drivers from driving illegally in local neighbourhoods. Andy White, of NSL, said

Ps in England must keep their surgeries open for longer to meet demand from patients, or risk losing funding. That is the warning from Downing Street. It said many patients were going to under pressure A&E departments, because they could not get appointments. The government wants to see surgeries open between 08:00 and 20:00, seven days a week, unless they can prove the demand is not there. The British Medical Association accused ministers of “scapegoating” doctors. Downing Street said surgeries should do more to ensure they offer appointments in the evening and at weekends. It said: “Most GPs do a fantastic job, and have their patients” interests firmly at heart. “However, it is increasingly clear that a large number of surgeries are not

Figures show more than 4 in 10 hospitals in England declared a major alert in the first week of 2017. The news comes as the hospitals faced unprecedented pressures. Figures from the National Audit Office show 46% of GP surgeries closed at some point during core hours. 18% of them closed at or before 15:00 on at least one weekday. Women can take the day off when they want to and do not need to provide medical proof or justification. Women do not have to make prior appointments to take the time off either. Women suffering from intense menstrual symptoms can simply ring on the day they plan to take their ‘Mother’s Day’. News of the female provision has been subject of intense debate in Zambia and beyond. Some women, such as Ndekela Mazimba supports ‘Mother’s Day’ and takes it every month to deal with severe period pains. “You might find that on the first day of your menses, you’ll have stomach cramps – really bad stomach cramps. You can take whatever painkillers but end up in bed the whole day”. Ms Mazimba’s boss, Justin Mukosa, supports the law and says he understands the pressure women face in juggling careers and family responsibilities. Any employers who deny women this entitlement may face prosecution. “Productivity is not only about the person being in the office. It should basically hinge on the output of that person”, Mukosa states. continued online

The day off is being called ‘Mother’s Day’, despite applying to all women, regardless of whether they have children or not.

Despite this the couple failed to tip the waitress instead, highlighting their satisfaction through a racist note. The couple wrote ‘great service don’t tip black people’. Carter – whose customer service is ‘way beyond’ the norm – was good enough to serve the white couple. However, she was not good enough to tip. This refusal to tip, once again, labels African-Americans as second-class citizens who are not entitled to fair treatment.

It is one of the only permanent memorials in the UK that is dedicated to these people. Manchester’s Pride weekend comes to a close with a candlelit vigil by the memorial, where people pay their respects to and remember the deceased. The extremist murdered 77 people in a bomb attack and shooting rampage in 2011. The 37-year-old sued the government last year after arguing that his human rights had been violated. Government lawyers have argued that the extremist is living in better prison condition than many inmates. They also say that Breivik remains a threat and should remain in solitary confinement. Judges are reviewing his solitary confinement. Breivik has appealed against it, arguing that his solitary confinement is inhumane and has violated human rights. He says that frequent strip searches and handcuffing has violated these rights. Breivik made a similar salute at the start of the case last year. The government is appealing the Oslo Court’s decision in April. The court sided with Breivik’s claims that his human rights had been breached. wiss Muslim parents have faced fines after refusing to send their daughters to mixed swimming lessons.

The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) recently upheld the Swiss Court’s decision to fine parents. The ECHR said that the Swiss Court had a right to do this. This is as they have a ‘legitimate aim’ to protect ‘foreign’ students from social exclusion. The parents fined, are both of dual, Turkish-Swiss nationality. They appealed to the European court in efforts of challenging the decision. The parents were fined in 2010 by the Swiss education authorities. They had refused to send two of their daughters to mixed swimming lessons. The fine was delivered as they failed to follow school rules. The fine can be delivered by the school to parents of pre-pubescent children. Swiss children are required to take part in swimming lessons up until the age of puberty. This is part of schools’ education curriculum. The parents believe that their right to religious freedom of thought, conscience and religion had been violated. This violation goes against article 9 of the European Convention on Human Rights. The decision is viewed as unfair to many Muslims. It is believed that religious beliefs have not been respected. Instead, the ruling encourages parents to give up their right to religious freedom and change their beliefs. If beliefs are not changed they will be fined. It is important that these ‘foreign’ students do take part in activities. Perhaps other activities and extracurricular activities that encourage integration could be offered. Many believe that parents should not have to give up their right to instil preferred values and beliefs within their children. A sense of equality has been abandoned here. continued online

63-year-old Judah Adunbi, is a grandfather who works to smooth relations between police and the black community. He was tasered after being approached by a female and male officer outside his home. Embarrassed police chiefs have admitted that the local community in Easton, Bristol would “have concerns” about the incident. The astonishing confrontation was caught on video of a man who can be heard speaking to the police officers. “He’s got keys in his pocket; he’s trying to get into his house. Don’t take that as a ******* threat. He is one of my neighbours. I see him everyday walking his dog. He is a lovely guy”, the man recording the incident says.

The footage shows him trying to enter his home, when approached by the officers and asked for his name. Adunbi replies: “I’m not telling you my name. I’ve done no wrong”. The police then shout “Taser” and shoot the electric gun at his face. The officer fired the gun, despite a neighbour shouting that Adunbi was simply trying to get into his home. Adunbi said he thought he was going to die when he was hit by the taser. “I felt that was it because of the way I fell back,” he said. “The way I fell backward on the back of my head. I was just paralysed”. He added that, “I thought that was it. I thought they were taking

my life. Both officers involved remain at work. The force has said they have voluntarily referred the incident to the Independent Police Complaints Commission. Chief Supt Jon Reilly said: “I understand the community are going to have concerns. And we’d really like to answer those, but as there’s an ongoing investigation that’s very difficult for us to do”. continued online

oasting, toasting and frying starchy foods such as potatoes and bread could raise the risk of cancer, the Food Standards Agency (FSA) warns. The government body has issued a public warning over the risks of acrylamide. Acrylamide is a chemical compound that forms in foods such as potato products and many root vegetables. It also forms in olives and pizza bases when they are cooked at temperature above 120C. The highest levels of the substance are found in foods with high starch content. When bread is grilled to make toast, for example, this causes more acrylamide to be produced. The darker the colour of the toast, the more acrylamide is present. Peaceful marches took part on 21 January 2017 following the inauguration of Donald Trump. The international campaign took place across the UK in cities including London, Manchester, Liverpool, Edinburgh and Bristol. Women gathered to emphasise the importance of standing up for their rights. Many feel that their rights are under threat as the Trump era begins. The US is a global leader but unfortunately the new president has repeatedly expressed regressive beliefs. As a result, many feel that it is important to stand up and fight against the backwardness. These marches provoke the global community to consider what impact the new administration will have on the rest of the world. In terms of women’s rights, east usually looks to west. However women’s rights in the west are now under threat. Kirsty, an organiser of the Liverpool’s womens March, reported that over 1000 people rallied. The fried chicken rolls were perfect balance of savoury and sweet tastes with the fresh onions giving a sharp and sweet burst of flavour. The ribs were so tender and the coating so delicious, they were the winning part of the starting dish. If there is one thing that makes Sapporo Teppanyaki shine it is the pyrotechnic wizardry that the chefs perform in front of your very eyes. Never has a dining experience been so theatrical and so entertaining. After an entertaining show of spatula tricks, egg balancing acts and tossing sautéed potatoes, the mains are prepared and cooked. Audience participation is absolutely key to the dining experience. Whilst having food tossed into your mouth straight from the grill may not sound like the most sophisticated practice, what the restaurant lacks in traditional table etiquette it makes up for in outstanding cooking performance and customers engagement and laughter.

Smith gave us some insight into his involvement with the project. He expressed his excitement over the launch, stressing that he was ‘unable to resist’ being part of the project. He highlighted that Bat Out of Hell is an ‘iconic’ piece of music which’s interpretation in a theatrical musical has been highly anticipated. Smith also gave special recognition to Manchester’s musical history, declaring that because of this Manchester is ‘thee place to open the show’. It was then announced that Meat Loaf was to take the stage. The energy and excitement among the crowd grew and the rock star received a huge welcome. Harrelson released a teaser trailer for the upcoming project stating: “No one’s ever shot a movie and live-broadcast it in cinemas at the same time. No one’s ever been that stupid, until now”. “Every friend I have told me this is a terrible idea, it’s going to be a failure”, Harrelson says in the trailer. “Which is how I knew I was onto something…Now it might end up great, it might end up a disaster. But I guarantee you it will be worth watching”. In what has been described as “a deep, soul-searching comedy” the film encompasses “one of the worse nights of [Harrelson’s] life”. The film is inspired by the real-life incident in 2002, which left Harrelson in a jail cell. After damaging an ash tray in the back of a taxi, Harrelson was arrested following an evening in a Soho nightclub. The film has a 30 person cast, with 14 different locations for shooting. Legendary nightclub Sankeys closes TNT Entertainment

Y

es, the legendary Manchester nightclub Sankeys has announced it has closed after the building which housed it has been sold.

The news first broke when Sankeys announced on their Facebook and Twitter accounts on 12 January of its closure. “As many of you have seen over the last hour over social media”, the club began writing. “We have been forced to close due circumstances completely out of our control. We will be releasing a full statement in the morning to explain what has happened. We love you all and thank you for your amazing and kind words”.

cloudo (talk)

Local reports claimed that the building it’s based in, the Beehive Mill, is being sold by its Japanese owners to property developers who want to turn it into apartments. The managing director of Radius Security, Tony Hill, who is understood to have been helping to manage Sankeys for around five months, told local media that “Sankeys as a brand will live on”. Mr Hill cited that the nightclub still has a license to hold events and possibly might relocate to another venue. Although there is nothing confirming the latter, it gives hope for lovers of the partying hotspot for Mancunians. The hashtag #RIPSankeys on social media

immediately made its rounds, with many sharing their fondest memories of the place. Happy Mondays singer Rowetta tweeted, “Some of my favourite nights & loads of great memories in my head from before we photographed everything #RIPSankeys”. After opening inside Beehive Mill in 1994, Sankeys was once called Sankeys Soap – a nod to the building’s past as a soap factory. The nightclub was rebranded Sankeys in 2006. Daft Punk, New Order, Bjork, Moby and The Chemical Brothers have all played sets there over the years. Sankeys now runs its own Ibiza-based spin-off and briefly had a New York City outpost too.

Singer Ray BLK wins BBC’s Sound of 2017

TNT Entertainment

ith the new year still carrying some of 2016 woes, Manchester’s own Che3kz has decided to brighten things up by releasing her latest visual ‘Morphing Time’ via Link Up TV.

artist, Stormzy.

TNT Entertainment

I

It’s ‘Morphing Time’ for Che3kz

ndependent soul artist Ray BLK has won the top spot of BBC’s Sound of 2017 list.

News of the honour came on earlier in January. The list predicts the top artists destined for success in 2017. A panel of 170 DJs, critics and festival bookers selected the list of honourees. The honour is a great achievement for the talented 22-year-old artist who hails from South-London. In its 14-year history this is the first time that an unsigned artist has been named as winner. BLK follows the likes of former winners Sam Smith, Adele and Ellie Goulding. The inspirational soul singer says that she is “honoured” to have topped the list. The honour highlights BLK as the most ‘exciting’ talent whose ‘new music’ is likely to be successful in 2017.

Ray says that she is “proud” to be part of a list which is “full” of “so much talent”. She says some of those named are “independent artists” whom she hopes “inspires the next generation”. Ray will especially be an inspiration to young black female artists.

Accompanied by a gritty grime sound, hardhitting punch-lines and energetic flows, Che3kz has begun the year with a bang in her first visual release. Emerging from a relatively quiet 2016, the grime star has made it perfectly clear that the same will not be said for 2017. ‘Morphing Time’ can almost be perceived as a warning for the scene surrounding her.

In this year’s list, 4 of the top 5 honourees named are Black British female singers. The appreciation of the voices of Black British females is encouraging as it promotes inclusion and diversity.

The overall message appears to be “love me or hate me, you will respect me”. Taking that respect by force doesn’t seem to be a problem either.

Ray’s win can be viewed as a celebration of Black British soulful femininity.

Never happy with mediocrity, instead of simply promoting ‘Morphing Time’ on social media, she’s also hinting that her next visual release ‘Beast’ will be presented to the online world very soon. “It’s [Morphing Time] a taster of what’s to come [this year]. After this, I’ll release another visual called ‘Beast’. I’m just focusing on creating music at the minute”, she told TNT. Che3kz’s ‘Bad Bre3d’ mixtape is also available for free via her website.

Ray BLK says that the win is the “most surprising thing” that’s happened to her “thus far”. The 22-year-old released her first recordings whilst studying for an English degree. She has remained an independent artist, retaining her rights through releasing her music on her own label. The artist fuses R&B melodies with Hip-hop vibes, to create a ‘velvety’ and ‘streetwise’, soulful voice. The inspirational singer’s talent has particularly stood out in track, ‘My Hood’ which features Grime BBC Music Andrew Vincent

TNT recently sat down with herbal flower practitioner, Janet Bainbridge who explained the importance of “emotional healing”.

heresa May has announced her ‘Brexit blueprint’ which sees plans to deliver a ‘hard Brexit’ go underway. Sky News

These plans were announced in a speech on 17 January 2017. It has been confirmed that Britain will opt for a ‘clean’ break with the EU. As a result the Brexit debate has arisen once again – in parliament and in British society. May remains committed, declaring that Britain will leave the EU regardless of whether parliament backs the deal or not. The prime-minister is determined to exit the EU even if terms have not been drafted. Many believe that as a result of this ‘unclear’ strategy, MPs will be more likely to back the deal. This is as there is not an alternative direction which can be supported. It means that Britain will leave the EU and follow World Trade Organisation rules. The prime-minister announced plans to leave the single market and forge new trade deals with the European Union. This desire to break away from the single market is contradictory to many. This is as there is still a desire to maintain relations with the EU’s single market. May said that the EU must “allow for the freest possible trade in goods and services”. Thus, although Britain rejects membership with the single market, there is still a reliance on it for trade. continued online

erbal remedies are a good alternative to pharmaceutical remedies when it comes to feeling good.

Janet Bainbridge is a registered Bach Flower practitioner and teacher. She delivers workshops within the community, offering support and advice on how Bach Flower Remedies can be used. Janet says that her mission is to “to teach people about the Bach Flower Remedies”. She highlights usefulness of the remedies in these sessions, outlining how they can be used in everyday life.

Bach Flower Remedies were discovered by “eminent” Harley Street doctor, Dr Edward Bach in the 1930s. Dr Bach discovered 38 Bach flower remedies, all of which were “different from homeopathy”. Janet says that the healing herbal remedies are an alternative “system” which “people can confidently use themselves”. This system of healing largely focuses on emotional healing and wellbeing. It is important to maintain an emotional balance. Janet says “in this day and age, stress can have a negative impact on your physical body”. Janet says that the most common remedy used for finding an emotional balance is the Bach ‘rescue remedy’. The remedy is made up of 5 of the Bach remedies. omen’s tennis player Johanna Konta has described her career as maturing like a fine wine. However, the British number one’s champagne moment may be yet to come.

After impressively winning the Sydney International in January, Konta is a real contender in what is a highly unpredictable season for women’s tennis. She is in form after winning a second WTA title in Australia, brushing aside the resurgent Eugenie Bouchard and then world number 3 Agnieszka Radwanska in the final.

Sale suspended Arscott on 4 January and carried out an internal investigation.

Sale, who have lost their past 10 matches in all competitions.

Bristol boss Mark Tainton had said “nothing of any sporting value” had been passed on to his coaches.

Tom Arscott, who can also play fullback, spent three years at Bristol between 2007 and 2010 before joining Sale from London Welsh in 2013.

However, Sale complained to the Rugby Football Union before suspending Arscott.

He suffered a serious knee injury in March last year that kept him out for eight months.
