Re-open Trafford General Hospital A&E TNT News

e-open Trafford General as a fully staffed A&E/Hospital is the title of a petition recently launched calling for an operational accident and emergency department (A&E) to be reopened. The outcry is to Parliament had been backed by more than 1,200 people within a short period of time. Trafford’s A&E department was replaced by an urgent care centre just over 3 years ago in 2013.
In October, the Urgent Care Centre (UCC) and Walk-in Centre at Trafford General - the birthplace of the NHS merged. Back in 2012, over 9000 people signed a petition calling for the A&E department at the hospital to be saved. NHS managers were staunch in their belief that the department is too small to be cost-effective and closed it. Whilst even celebrities like Urmston-born actor Matthew Kelly also campaigned against its closure, nothing else could be done.
fter spending 11 years at the forefront of Manchester’s arts and cultural scene, Maria Balshaw is set to become a leading figure in British arts.
The 46-year-old gallery director has been appointed, with the approval of the Prime Minister, the new director of Tate. As director, Balshaw will be responsible for the four Tate art galleries. The galleries include Tate Modern and Tate Britain in London as well as offshoots in Liverpool and St Ives.
Created by Gary Bodell, the new petition to the government reads: “Trafford General Hospital served south Manchester for decades.
and one that gets 100,000 signatures will be considered for debate in Parliament. Activists and residents are rooting for the former at the very least.
“A couple of years ago, the A&E was closed and since then residents in this region need to go elsewhere.
Highlighting the now derelict rooms within the hospital, the petition cites that “entire wards are closed off and in darkness”.
In a cultural rejuvenation of our city, Balshaw has been director of Manchester Art Galleries and the Whitworth. In her position, Balshaw oversaw the £15m redevelopment of the Whitworth gallery. She is also credited with persuading George Osborne to invest £78m in the Factory arts hub.
The petition has up until 18 July 2017 to reach 10,000 signatures at least, for a response from the House of Commons to be warranted.
The Whitworth redevelopment, located at The University of Manchester, is regarded as a considerable triumph. So much so that in 2015, the Whitworth won the title of UK’s Museum of the Year. Visitor numbers have also doubled.

Maria Balshaw commented: “I am honoured that the Tate trustees have asked me to be Director.
“After a personal experience the A&E at the MRI is overworked and understaffed. Re-open Trafford General as a fully staffed A&E/hospital”. As per the he Government responds to a petition that gets 10,000 signatures,
Balshaw succeeds Sir Nicholas Serota, who is standing down after almost 30 years. She is due to take up the post in June, making the first ever woman to do so.
