Manchester’s Homeless: Life on the streets TNT News Alexia Hendrickson

I

n spite of the festivities and high spirits, the cold winter months can be hard-hitting. With darker days, earlier nights and biting temperatures – winter is not always the most wonderful time of the year. Especially not for the homeless. According to recent statistics from Manchester-based Brydon Court, the number of people living on the streets has increased significantly in the past six years. The organisation’s Outreach

RENTAL at Evans Halshaw YOUR RENTAL YOUR WAY

staff works with entrenched rough sleepers to help empower them to become stable in accommodation. TNT spoke to X, a homeless man who has been living on the streets for 2 years. After not receiving significant help from the council, X begs in order to survive. Despite trying to seek shelter in hostels for the homeless, X was kicked out after not meeting the requirements. “It gets harder and harder every year. The cold is unbearable at times”. With so many on the streets,

and especially at this time of year, a sense of community is created among the homeless. According to X, it is the generosity of people in the Christmas months as well as the sense of community that support him through the toughest time of the year. There are also several charities in Manchester that seek to relieve the less fortunate. Albert Kennedy, Mustard Tree, Barnabus and Shelter Greater Manchester are just a few of the many charities. They work towards improving the condition

of those on the streets by providing charity in the form of food, clothing and living equipment. The continuous growth of the numbers of homeless in Manchester has meant that our city has the highest figures in the country, outside London. Due to this, homelessness is a problem that has been recognised by the Council. TNT have approached Manchester City Council for a comment and we await their response. An update, with their response, should they get back to us, will be on our website.

reen Party mayoral candidate for Manchester, Deyika Nzeribe, has died aged 50.

The much-loved campaigner and activist had rushed to the Accident and Emergency (A&E) department in hospital after contracting flu, according to close friend Colette Williams. After a couple of hours in hospital, the father-ofthree passed away after suffering a cardiac arrest. Known locally as a ‘community champion’, the late Green Mayor candidate was a resident of Hulme in Manchester. He was involved in numerous campaigns and activities advocating for local services and community engagement. Also a member of BARAC, Mr Nzeribe had extensive networks within the voluntary and arts sectors. His networks branched far and wide with national black activists and the Manchester Environmental Education Network. On his Facebook account, hundreds of tributes have been left by many who knew or met him. A vigil celebrating Mr Nzeribe’s life was held outside Hulme’s Z-Arts Centre on the night after the news broke. For many, Mr Nzeribe was the kind, considerate and driven activist whose shoes will be hard to fill. continued online

Right let’s get to it, I’m totally grateful 2016 has disappeared; reason given in last month’s editors letter. Unfortunately, 2016 has not left without a trace, as the evidently bitter taste of the year in our mouths shows. Trump will be inaugurated this month on 20 January to the highest office and most powerful position on the planet. Only God knows what will happen now! Fingers crossed the little positives, if any, that he holds, will trump his monumental negatives. If we are to believe mainstream media, terrorism attacks are on the increase but are they? As social media moves attitudes and agendas at lightning speed, is it that we have access to too much information and imagery more readily than before? Therefore aren’t we now inundated with a tirade of propaganda that cares more about being published quick more than it being true? #YourViews On a lighter note, Prince Harry, fifth in line to the throne, is still dating Meghan Markle. Are we to see, for the first time, a little diversity in the royal family household - permanently? Whatever the outcome, good luck to them both as a couple and individuals. The Nubian Times has some great news for you guys. Trafford Housing Panel has supported the launch of a Trafford edition of The Nubian Times monthly

newspaper. This means effectively there will now be two different editions of our monthly publication.

The Nubian Times remains under the company name - TNT News, which is an abbreviation for the mother company and TNT Media, which supports and manages your social media marketing needs. If you need help with that, get in touch via www.thenubiantimes.com/ contactus or call us on 0161 408 4116. Let’s touch on some pressing issues in Greater Manchester and beyond that I personally feel are getting to larger problems. The spiralling rise in mental health and homelessness. The question we need to ask ourselves is - Are we, as a human race and hopefully humanitarians, now desensitised to the plight of our fellow citizens struggling on the roadside? The amount of people in sleeping bags in central Manchester keeps increasing and is shocking. Most of these people in this dire situation are sufferers of a multitude of mental health issues, yet some of us ignore them when they ask for help. What does this say about us as a collective of human beings? Please think carefully about this question. In any case, change for the better is required and fast. Let’s hope that councillors, local authorities, MPs and local key figures make 2017 different by drawing up steps to tackle not only the issue of rough sleepers but the edifying of our community about mental health and ways to curb its rise.

fter her 21-year-old daughter was left infertile from cancer treatment, Julie Bradford, 45 became the surrogate mother to her grandchild. Her daughter, Jessica Jenkins, survived cervical cancer after being diagnosed at the tender age of 18. Upon diagnosis, Jenkins decided to freeze her eggs at the local Cardiff University Hospital. From the 21 eggs that were extracted before radiotherapy treatment, 10 survived and were grown into embryos before being frozen. Ms Jenkins has been in remission from the disease since August 2014. After careful consideration Jessica and her husband Rees Jenkins decided to start an IVF plan to conceive a child. The grandmotherto-be was successfully implanted with the fertilised egg earlier this year.

Bradford gave birth to her grandson, Jack, on 2 December weighing in at 6lb 10oz. The 21-year-old daughter said: “My m[u]m is the most brave and amazing woman in the world. I love her so much for giving me my son. The proud grandmother has said: “From a young age I longed to become a mother and our dream has come true. Jack is perfect in every way. “I’ve always known from a young age Jess has longed to become a mother just like I did. When cancer took the chance away for her to carry her own child away we were all heartbroken. “I decided that if I could be Jess’ surrogate then I would have the control again. nspirational community worker, Akeim Mundell, has been awarded the British Empire Medal for his services to the local community.

Akeim, who has carried out community work over the past 10 years, says that he is “still in shock”. The award was something that he “really didn’t expect”. The 22-year-old says “I’m feeling very proud... it’s made me realise that I must be doing something good”. The award has also made him “realise” that he “must be making an impact”.

News of the win came on 30 December 2016. The British Empire Medal, awarded and commissioned by the queen, recognises 22-year-old Akeim’s inspirational work within the community. Akeim says that he found out about the award in November but had to ‘keep quiet’ about it until the announcement in December.

Akeim hopes that the extra title will enable him to further develop his online jobs forum, Manchester Job Opportunities in a “professional way”. His site encourages members of the Manchester community to move out of unemployment – encouraging them chase success.

He says that the award has been issued for “delivering” and “offering” a “hands on service” to his community. The medal acknowledges the “significant difference” which he has made.

Akeim hopes that the award will “enable more people to want to work with me to deliver projects to the local communities”. The award is well deserved; Akeim will continue to inspire members of the local community. TNT congratulates Akeim.

‘Khan-age’: Bolton boxer’s family drama

A

mir Khan’s family drama has reached boiling point as details of the feud were broadcast on national television. The boxer’s wife, Faryal Makhdoom, 25, brought the family feud to ITV’s, This Morning. She explained her side of the story, following rants that she posted on Snapchat. The 25-year-old says that she has been ‘physically and mentally’ bullied by the family. She told This Morning that the family have verbally attacked her. They have called her ‘Michael Jackson’, accusing her of having plastic surgery. ‘Damaging’ The airing of the families

‘dirty laundry’ on TV and social media has only re-exaggerated how the media can be damaging. Television and social media can destroy relationships and push people even further away from each other. Amir Khan is said to be in the middle of the drama. Throughout it he has remained ‘supportive’ of both but it is now becoming ‘too much’. Following the now public feud, Amir has threatened to abandon his wife and parents. Makhdoom says that the family were welcoming of her at first, but trouble entered paradise 6 months into the couple’s engagement. Makhdoom’s ‘modern’ style of dress has been criticised as ‘Islam states it is not acceptable’.

Makhdoom says that although she may dress in a ‘western’ style she ‘respects her religion alot’. Some see the broadcast as a move to demand equality – this was a chance for the young woman to ‘speak-up’.

Snoopers’ Charter gives all access

BBC 2 show explores British Muslim experience ast month the BBC broadcast a ‘BigBrother style’ reality show which explores and examines the British Muslim experience.

Thus, Muslims within the British community were presented to viewers as a diverse group. Instead of highlighting that the followers of a religion do not necessarily practice the faith correctly, the show evoked an opposing image to the public, according to many commentators.

The show named, Muslims Like Us, has been labelled ‘Muslim Big-Brother’ by many who believe it will be controversial. The BBC has chosen a diverse cast of Muslims who come from different backgrounds and walks of life.

A spokesperson for the Muslim Council of Britain called the show a ‘safe space’ for discussion and debate. Thus, many members of the Muslim community see the show as an opportunity for Muslims to speak out.

Cast members include a stand-up comedian, a gay man, a 76-year-old woman and 27-year-old teacher. Also cast, is former boxer Abdul Haqq, who is said to uphold ‘radical Islamist’ views.

he Investigatory Powers Bill has been passed in the House of Lords, beginning at the start of 2017.

Otherwise known as the Snoopers’ Charter, this bill confirms the security services’ right to online surveillance. It also demands that some companies have to keep people’s browser history for prolonged periods. This information could then be called upon, showing what sites you went to and who you spoke to. The Government Communications Headquarters and MI5 have the right to hack into any of our electronic devices. There are a staggering 48 authorities that can request this information, including the Department of Health and HM Revenue. The news of the bill has proved to be controversial and there are strong arguments for both sides. Home Secretary Amber Rudd has spoken of the importance of the surveillance: “At a time of heightened security threat, it is essential our law enforcement, security and intelligence services have the powers they need to keep people safe”. The benefits of the bill are that security services should be able to stop terrorists in their tracks. By viewing their online activity, they will have more of an insight into the beliefs and plans of these individuals. Some believe the bill is far too intrusive for those who don’t engage in illegal activity online. Contrasting World Views Directors hoped that the diversity of the cast will cause viewers to consider how Muslims are stereotyped by Westerners. By placing ten Muslims into a house, the show aimed to highlight their contrasting world views.

The show will also explore how British Muslims interact with their local community. Unlike the Channel 5 ‘Big brother’, participants are not confined to the house and will not face evictions. Muslims Like Us, is said to be inspirational as it addresses the lack of representation of Muslims in the media. However, some do not believe that the show is inspirational. The BBC have received backlash for casting Abdul Haqq,

who many view as an ‘extremist’. Thus, although the show aims to challenge Islamophobia it may instead contribute to such attitudes. Additionally, the BBC’s attempt to embrace a non-Christian faith may not sit well with some members of the Muslim community. It is likely that some will see this BigBrother style attempt to embrace as an attempt to exploit. The 2-part BBC 2 show is available on BBC iPlayer until 12 January.

Wheelchair user joins diverse body-positive lingerie campaign

I

n an innovative campaign by Curvy Kate, 8 models of various ages, sizes, skin tones and shapes star in #TheNewSexyCampaign.

Gemma Flanagan, a wheelchair user, models alongside an alopecia sufferer, a cancer ‘previvor’, a woman with a ‘port wine birthmark’ and a 65-yearold. The campaign challenges society’s perceptions of sexy and celebrates the bodies of all women. Curvy Kate– a fuller bust brand ardently devoted to representing diversity and equality within the fashion industry – have said: “Women of all shapes, sizes and looks model our collection. We believe a larger variety of models should be seen by all. “Society isn’t made up of one woman and we know our customers are all different.

So why not give them someone they can recognise?”

“The world we live in is diverse but yet the fashion industry is a very ‘perfect cookie cutter’ type world that is so unrelatable to the majority of people”. “I am proud that I have come through something so negative. I try to use it in a positive way wherever I can”. Gemma was diagnosed with Guillain-Barre Syndrome in 2011, a condition that left her in intensive care and rehabilitation. By taking part, Flanagan hopes women will love their bodies, even when they don’t fit the conventional ‘type’ of beauty. Hannah Isichei, Curvy Kate’s head of PR and marketing, has said: “Our dream is

to make the use of older women, women of colour, different shapes, looks and abilities the norm in the modelling world. So that eventually a campaign like this isn’t newsworthy. People will simply say what great lingerie – and gorgeous women modelling it”.

Snapchat becomes latest teaching method as part of the syllabus TNT News

We live in a community that is filled with social media. For this reason, it’s been suggested that using social media in the classroom is the best way to engage students. Snapchat could provide a wider range of ways to illustrate a concept. After the news of this 21st century teaching method, there have been

arguments pointed out for either side. Some argue that Snapchat works because many students learn by applying theories to examples in their own lives. By sending them pictures or short clips that relate to the course material, it can become more relatable. It’s also been suggested that engaging with students through social media can

improve a teacher’s relationship with them. Communicating on platforms that they use from dayto-day could make them feel more comfortable in interacting.

On the other hand, it is a concern that using Snapchat will encourage even more phone use in the classroom. Students could take advantage of having an excuse to be on their social media accounts whilst learning. This is why some believe it’s best to stick to more traditional teaching methods. Some also see Snapchat as a social gadget that has no educational purpose. However, a variety of educational uses are being created and trialled by teachers in many schools. It’s sure to make lessons more fun too, which will improve the overall school experience.

decaying rat found in Withington has been said to be the result of Manchester’s switch to smaller rubbish bins.

Manchester City Council voted in favour of the smaller bins in 2016, in an effort to prompt more recycling. At the time there were concerns that the bin swap would cause issues such as rubbish build-ups and rodent infestation. Both of these concerns seem to have become a reality after the news that a decaying rat has been found. The rat was found by a local lady and her son when they were walking in Withington. It was on the corner of Davenport Avenue and Hill Street. Lead opposition councillor John Leech aired his fears for the community if the bins were to be put in place: “This is going to be a massive inconvenience and could cause infestations when overflowing bins are not collected”. Leech also disagrees with the £2.4 million that it cost to change the bins. He believes it was reckless spending that could have been used for much more important causes. “Changing bins should not have been a priority, not when there are hundreds of people sleeping on our streets”. Leech and many others in opposition to the change are urging Manchester City Council to apologise for their mistake. *Photograph taken from Councillor John Leech’s website

ecently, Ian Myson, director of higher education partnerships, argued that too few UK students are studying abroad or are exchange students. Myson wants universities to ‘internationalise’ their students by preparing them to work within the world. Many believe that study abroad programmes are of value as they enrich students’ university experience. In the majority of cases they are also beneficial to an individual’s future. Not just universities However, it may be too late for universities to inspire student’s interest in studying abroad. This is a job not just for universities but for the whole educational institution. The British Council’s International Education Week has made efforts to address these issues. They promote the benefits of international learning and cultural exchange – also valuing equality. In 2015, it was reported that 400,000 international students study in the UK. In comparison, British students rarely study abroad or study in a diverse range of countries. In 2012- 2013, EU student exchange figures revealed that just 0.5% of British students went abroad. A vast majority of students went to France, Spain and Germany – a third of them were on work-placements. Figures likely to decrease These figures are likely to decrease over the years because of Brexit. The student community will find that fewer opportunities will be available in Europe. Many study abroad programmes are only available to EU members. When opportunities do become available fees will be higher. The overall cost of the experience will increase and visas are also needed. continued online

he publication of a book which promotes gender diversity has caused a stir, provoking discussion into language correctness. The book named ‘Can I tell you about gender diversity’ includes a set of guidelines. The book aims to create change and equality across the UK. It asks young children to stop using the terms ‘girls’ and ‘boys’. New guidelines The guidelines have been sent out to teachers, parents and pupils. Local schools are asked to use these guidelines to educate children as young as seven. It is believed that terms ‘girls’ and ‘boys’ exclude and discriminate against transgender children.

appy New Year to all Nubian Times readers and their families. Hope you all have a fantastic 2017.

Now, some of you will know that I am not a fan of New Year resolutions. Not because I am a kill joy, I just prefer SMART goals. Never the less, many of you are keen on New Year resolutions, so I have some advice which may help you to persevere with them. Firstly, it is a fact that most of us will fail our New Year resolutions. Actually only 8% of us will be successful (according to Scranton University in USA). In general, we fail because the resolutions we set are unrealistic, we set far too many, we try to compete with our friends and families unrealistic goals and the timescales we set are themselves nonsensical. What makes the situation worse is that we feel like failures when we struggle to stick with and accomplish our resolutions. So, if you want to stick with your resolutions you should:

Debate discusses whether labels such as ‘girls’, ‘boys’, ‘women’, ‘madam’ and ‘ladies’ are acceptable. Some women believe that labels such as these are ‘offensive’ and ‘unnecessary’. What labels are acceptable? TNT spoke to members of the local Manchester community. Some believe that terms are acceptable but it ‘depends on how they are said’. continued online

Just pick one thing and focus all of your energy on that. Try to keep it small and then when you have achieved it, move onto another one. Try and avoid previous resolutions as they may affect your confidence and motivation. Never go back… Set a time scale and be realistic. Try not to follow the crowd. Set a resolution that is really important to you. Don’t go with the latest fads or the latest thing on social media. If you are like me and you are not a fan of resolutions, then why not think about key principles that you want to live by or endorse for 2017. They could include: Complain less and be thankful for what you have and what you have achieved. There are many people around the world who would do anything to have the life that you have. It’s all relative. Remind yourself every day, that you are awesome and special. You deserve the best. Stay focused, stay blessed and have a wonderful 2017.

Darktown:

by Thomas Mullen

Goodreads

Thomas Mullen’s Darktown is a gripping, shocking and unsettling crime story. The novel is set in pre-civil rights 1948 Atlanta. Mullen allows readers to follow the investigative journey of Atlanta’s first black police department. The problem is, the authority of the department is limited. They can’t arrest white suspects, drive a squad car or use police headquarters. They work from the basement of a gym. A black woman turns up fatally beaten – last seen in a car driven by a white man. The force risks everything to investigate the murder. The ‘magnificent’ novel is soon to be a major TV series.

ituated on Barlow Moor Road, fiveyear-old Olive and Thyme sits amongst a cluster of restaurants. The restaurant’s décor boasts earthy tones. Dark brown wooden tables and chairs stand on an oak coloured wooden floor and lean against a sandstone brick wall. Mahogany wooden beams in the ceiling, with Turkish hanging lamps, look down on the diners. The special Mediterranean atmosphere recreated here is fitting, as Turkish, Greek and Italian food is served. First, the starters. ‘Pink Lady’, accompanied by her hot and fresh-out-ofthe-clay-oven and swollen Turkish bread, were laid on the table in style. Pink Lady is creamy yoghurt blended with beetroot and garlic then dressed with finely crushed pistachio nuts. An unusual dish, the beetroot was not overpowering; hints of garlic were present in the yoghurt. Also served was ‘Sigara Boregi’, a Turkish delicacy which sees spinach, egg and parsley encapsulated in a fried feta cheese pastry.

Robyn Travis’s Mama Can’t Raise No Man is an eyeopening, laugh-out loud novel which explores black masculinity in today’s society. Travis has created a thought provoking and intelligent debut novel. The novel ‘grips you’ from the first page, taking you on a journey which gives you insight into different realities. The novel is crafted through a series of letters exchanged between a diverse and ‘colourful’ cast.

The pastry was light and

crispy, with the soft filling melting in the mouth. For the main; The ‘Ottoman Sac Tava’. This arrived sizzling in a traditional dish (sac pan); complete with lit flame beneath it. Tender diced lamb was combined with onions, crunchy sweet peppers, tomatoes, soft mushrooms and herbs. The rice which accompanied the meat was equally as perfect. It was light, salty, slightly sweet and savoury. Cooked to perfection, each grain was separate, as if steamed. ‘Lemon and Thyme Chicken’ was served on a bed of risotto. The chicken was succulent and juicy, no sauce was needed. Sundried tomatoes were found in the risotto which was perfectly sticky, tomato-y and lemony. Although under new ownership since September 2016, Olive and Thyme say they have “stayed the same”. The “same regular customers” visit and there has been “no changes”. T

wo of the biggest R&B singers of the 90s and early 2000s are set to come to Manchester this coming February.

Grammy Award winning Ashanti will return for a nationwide R&B tour commencing at the beginning of next year. This tour will mark her first return to the UK in three years. Not only will the 36-year-old singer perform her top hits, but will also start work on an upcoming album. The new work, which will mark her fifth studio album, is due to be released in later this year. The ‘Foolish’ singer, dealt with a very public and messy breakup with renowned rapper, Nelly, last year. The pair had been dating for 10 years. As much as the relationship was kept out of the limelight, Ashanti herself has been in no way short of overwhelming attention. In 2015, Ashanti opened up about crazed fans and an ongoing trail against a stalker. Ashanti will be joined by Grammy nominee singer, songwriter and music producer, Joe. Joe’s most famous works include: ‘Don’t Wanna Be a Player’, ‘Stutter’, ‘If I Was Your Man’ and ‘Thank God I Found You’.

#BritsSoWhite outrage leads to ‘rethink’ lack of diversity TNT Entertainment TNT Entertainment Britain’s biggest music awards, the Brits, will shake-up its choice of judges this year. This is being done in an attempt to address the lack of diversity. No black artists received nominations last year, despite huge success from home-grown artists like Stormzy, Skepta and Krept & Kronan. The ‘shake-up’ comes after an outrage over the lack of black nominees. In the Echo of the #OscarsSoWhite, #BritsSoWhite trended on twitter. Rapper Stormzy and others behind him criticised the Brits organisers for failing to represent multiculturalism on the British music scene. Following that; artist like Lilly Allen and Laura Mvula were amongst many to support the outcry. Singersongwriter Mvula threatened to boycott the award show earlier this year in light of this. Whilst British artists were overlooked, international musicians

TNT Entertainment including Kendrick Lamar and Drake were nominated in these categories. Many commentators have said this issue has been ongoing and ignored. Stormzy released a direct freestyle ‘On take’ calling the Brit Awards ‘embarrassing’. Ged Doherty, chairman of BPI and Brit Awards replied to Stormzy’s criticism several days after. He said it led to a whole rethink, citing it “was a wakeup call for me”. Over 700 new judges have been invited to vote for the 2017 prizes. It is reported they are a mix of record label representatives and members of the media. Meanwhile, the Golden Globe nominations this year have brought hope for change in the film industry in terms of diversity. acebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg is hot on the heels of the recent trip to Nigeria and Kenya.

Whilst there, he declared Africa is helping to drive the next wave of progress in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) disciplines. This is further evidence that the parts are summing up nicely towards a productive and valuable whole. Firstly, look out for a completely locally-designed and manufactured smartphone via South Africa’s Onyx Connect. Production is set to begin early in January. The company also has plans for tablets and TV set-top boxes. In addition, an Ethiopian distribution centre to help drive sales across the continent, is planned. Admittedly, the proposed 1GB of RAM won’t shake up any current technological trees. But an ultra-competitive price of around £18 may make the more well-known importers take a second look at their ridiculous margins. In the longer-run, the new phone promises to spur other local entrants into the market which will further boost developments. Progress across the STEM franchise has received a boost from steps to make it easier for African innovators to register. Following this, innovatiors can secure the intellectual property rights (including patents and design) over their creations. The new online portal regime replaces a timeconsuming and costly pen and paper procedure. This often made it easier and more profitable to sell an idea to be exploited for profit by those beyond Africa’s shores. The meter on those days looks to be running down.

ormer business secretary Lord Peter Mandelson has said there has been a mistaken impression of Brexit’s economic effects on the UK. The negative economic effects of Brexit will happen gradually not rather than in one big hit, according to the Labourite. Lord Mandelson, a central figure in New Labour who served under the last Labour government, said Remainers were

“mistaken”. The Remain campaign was wrong to suggest there would be a single big economic hit from leaving the union. He warned that Brexit was “the elephant in the room” when it came to industrial policy. In addition, he said exit from the single market would intensify problems for business caused by leaving the EU. Over time, businesses would face border tariffs, customs barriers, frictional cost and regulatory disruption and interruption of

trade. He recently told the House of Commons business committee that severe deterioration in the UK business environment may be inevitable. “This deterioration is not going to happen straight away. That was the mistaken impression, in my view, given in the referendum.

“There are basic choices, hard or soft, which must be got right first. If we get Brexit wrong I don’t think industrial strategy in itself will be able to correct the consequences of a hard Brexit”.

“It will be a gradual, inexorable worsening of conditions in the UK. That’s why people saying it all seems to be going OK so far are missing the point – it hasn’t even kicked off yet.

New Year honours list credits GB’s Olympians TNT Sport

T

his year’s honours list has recognised a number of sports stars, in light of Team GB’s success in Rio. 10% of the list was filled by Olympians and Paralympians, with five receiving knighthood or damehood. The list is released at New Year and honours people who have served the United Kingdom. This service can be in a variety of forms, including through sporting achievement. Amongst the Olympians to become a Sir this year was World Number One tennis star Andy Murray. 2016 saw him go from strength to strength, winning Wimbledon for the second time. He also brought home gold from Rio and became Sports Personality of the Year for the third time. Mo Farah was another Olympian to become a Sir. He secured his fourth Olympic gold medal in 2016 and was overwhelmed to receive the honour. He said: “I’m so happy to be awarded this incredible honour from the country that has been my home since I moved here at the age of eight”.

The number of Black, Asian and minority ethnic (BAME) background recipients was it its highest this year.

Not real heroes? Since the news of our country’s new sirs and dames, there have been heated discussions surrounding the choices. Some argue that to be a knight or a dame you must have done much more than excel in sport. It has been noted that many of these sports stars have also been honoured due to their work for charity. However, some still insist that they are too young and haven’t done enough to deserve it.

ndy Murray has been voted the BBC Sports Personality of the Year for the third time. He is the only person ever to have ever won the award so many times. The event took place at Birmingham’s Genting Arena, but Murray couldn’t be there in person on the night. He accepted the award from Florida, talking to the audience and those at home from a video-link. Since first being awarded the title in 2013, he went on to win it in 2015 and now again 2016.

In December, India comfortably secured overall test series victory over England. The deciding match was England’s fourth defeat in five matches.

This wasn’t all he did in 2016 either. Murray also won his second Wimbledon title in June, plus brought home gold from the summer Olympics in Rio.

The list made two of our Olympic sportswomen dames – heptathlon heroine Jessica Ennis-Hill and rowing champion Katherine Grainger. Both athletes have now retired from their sports, having achieved incredible things for Great Britain.

Individuals from the BAME community have made up 9.3% of the list.

Team GB’s Paralympic flag bearer Lee Pearson also received knighthood. He took his gold medal total to 11 in Rio, winning individual freestyle in equestrian.

Murray named Sports Personality of the Year

For the past few years he has been amongst the best in the tennis community. In November, he went one better when he was named World Number One in the sport.

The Scotsman truly ended 2016 on top of the world. Amongst the other candidates for the Sports Personality award this year was Paralympian Kadeena Cox. The local Manchester Metropolitan University student brought home gold from Rio, in two different sports. She was the first Brit to win gold in two sports at the same Paralympics since 1988. amaica came out on top over England in December winning the Netball International Series.

Jamaica and England – otherwise known as the Sunshine Girls and the Roses – have grown quite a rivalry in the sport.

The first of the three face-offs was at London’s Copper Box Arena and saw Jamaica start strong. They beat England 66-49.

Back in 2014, the Sunshine Girls beat England to the bronze medal at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. This was the second time Jamaica had claimed Commonwealth Games bronze, also taking it home from Manchester in 2002.

At Manchester’s Belle Vue, England were victorious in game two and made the overall standings level with a 63-50 win. The decider took place at Coventry’s Ricoh Arena and it was all to play for after two close matches. In an exciting end to the series, Jamaica clinched the overall victory,

England then got Jamaica back the year after, by beating them to the bronze at the 2015 Sydney World Cup. continued online
