The historic Junction Pub calls last orders T
TNT News he Junction pub, one of Manchester’s local institutions, going back to the heyday of the nearby Hulme Hippodrome, has now closed its doors for what could be the last time, much to the outrage of the local community.

Reportedly it is now available to lease as a development opportunity. The news comes after TNT spoke to Portfolio Properties who confirmed they currently own the property and are now ‘inviting proposals’ from the public. The historic establishment was last run under the ownership of Hyde’s Brewery, and is now owned by Portfolio Properties. Deyika Nzeribe, of Hulme’s Green Party, is among the local community outraged by the alleged sale of another much-loved historical community asset. He said: “It’s a shame that

Hyde’s did not appear to value the importance of The Junction as part of the Hulme community, I’m sure they would have given a chance to local people to put in an offer”. The future of the pub, once known as the Grand Junction Hotel, is uncertain; however, as Portfolio are still looking for a leaseholder with a
clear vision to revitalise the once-cherished pub. The proposed leasing of the hotel takes place in the background of a series of pub closures in Hulme, as room is made for further regeneration in the local area, including the nearby MMU Birley campus. The hotel was known as a venue for music, with local
musicians gathering for regular jam nights, open mic night, and reggae nights held there prior to its closure. Such was the loyalty from the local community that a petition was launched last year to save the pub on Change.org, however this was unfortunately unsuccessful.
Mark Fletcher, Chief Executive at Manchester Pride, said: “What a night! We are delighted to have hosted such a brilliant night at The Bays Victoria Warehouse Hotel and to have raised so much money for LGBT causes”. “Rebecca and Lucy stole the show but we couldn’t have done it without our fantastic guests who were unbelievably generous”. Guests, including Coronation Street’s Debbie Rush, Mikey North, Sair Khan and Bruno Langley, were also invited to a sparkling drinks reception in Bays Brick Bar. At one of his first public engagements since taking office, new Lord Mayor of Manchester Cllr Carl AustinBehan was also seen at the Victoria Warehouse Hotel. continued online

Peter Cushing, TfGM Metrolink Director, said: “Unfortunately

Bill Cosby sexual assault trial set for July TNT News
B
ill Cosby is due to stand trial on sexual assault allegations dating back in 2004, as a US court has ruled. Andrea Constand, former Temple University employee, accused Cosby of attacking her after giving her drug pills at his Philadelphia mansion twelve years ago. They were working together at the time. The case was settled by a lawsuit back in 2006 and she was paid an undisclosed sum. Prosecutors reopened the case last summer after becoming fully aware that the statute of limitations had not run out. Over
50 women then alleged him of sexual abuse which took place decades ago.
Around 35 women spoke to the New York Times in regards to how the 78-year-old drugged them and took sexual advantage of them, with most of the incidents happening in the 1960’s. Some of these women were teenagers at the time, sent to him by model agencies, while others were working or about to work with him. The list of the victims includes 70’s supermodels such as Janice Dickinson and Beverly Johnson. Even though Mr Cosby has admitted giving drug pills to women in the past, he still

maintains his innocence. He states that the sexual encounters were consensual and appears to be confident that his behaviour was not a rape,
whereas he has countersued many women for defamation. The American comedian will appear in court on July 20.

hen my wife was passing her due date when pregnant with our first child, we visited the doctor and the nurse said to me: ‘Now it’s your job!’ I thought I’d done my bit! But, she was referring to the release of Oxytocin. Oxytocin is a hormone that is released during physical contact. It is known as the love drug. It’s cuddles, and snuggles and mummy and daddy special cuddles that help the pregnancy and development of the young foetus. How does this effect teaching? Well get snuggled up and I’ll tell you. Professor John Hattie suggests something revolutionary that, observations in schools should not be of teachers but of the pupils. I say revolutionary as to any teacher, in fact most employed workers, having their performance regularly scrutinised, has become part of the job. He argues that trust is key being an effective teacher and that observations should take place from the perspective of the child and an observer should not look at the strategies of the teacher, but instead focus on his/her effectiveness in the classroom. This is where it ties into Oxytocin. Oxytocin is also released when you have trust in those around you. This model of monitoring promotes staff feeling happier and secured in their job and therefore happier children right? Wrong! It’s like suggesting you should check how the passengers of the flight feel rather than checking the pilot is capable of flying a plane safely. Trust is a facet of any highly effective organisation, but teaching is a craft that needs constant improvement and reflection. A supportive and open environment is the key to monitoring teacher effectiveness, not trust. We all could do with a cuddle from time to time, but sometimes a kick up the backside is much quicker.

T
here are two certainties in life. Death and taxes. However, I would like to add another one. Change.
To be clear, when I talk about change, I refer to the ability to transform or to make and become different. It is a fact of life that nothing stays the same. Change is inevitable. Never the less, many of us dislike and fear change for a variety of reasons including fear of the unknown, fear of failure and self-doubt. Some may also believe that our lives are already pre-determined and we have little control over the many directions our lives take. We may also think that real change is impossible. I would disagree. There could be situations in our lives that we may be unhappy with. The only way we can improve our situation is by changing it. I know change can sometimes be difficult, even extremely difficult. Although, the alternative could be a life of frustration, unhappiness and anger. In general, I believe change is good and positive. Imagine a life without change. Things would stagnate and die. Change can be exciting and can help us to step outside of our comfort zones. We forgot that change can bring us so many opportunities and possibilities.
S
ocial media erupted after a 4-year-old child fell into the gorilla enclosure at Cincinatti Zoo, USA, last month, an encounter which led to zoo staff shooting the endangered gorilla dead.
We are all capable of changing and if we want to change certain aspects of our lives, we can:
He said: “It is important to note that with the child still in the exhibit, tranquilizing the 450-pound gorilla was not an option.
Footage of the incident shows the gorilla standing over the child in a moat, before dragging him around the enclosure like a rag doll.
“Tranquilizers do not take effect for several minutes and the child was in imminent danger.
Animal Rights campaigners were quick to criticise the zoo’s handling of the incident, while critics also questioned the role of the child’s parents in the incident.
“On top of that, the impact from the dart could agitate the animal and cause the situation to get much worse”.

Sometimes change can take time and may not happen immediately. Stick at it and be patient. • Ask for help: No man or woman is an island and you are not on your own. Winner of a Judges award in the 2013 Bruntwood Prize for Playwriting, this is the world premiere of a stunningly poetic new play by the Welsh playwright. ‘Bird’ follows the journey of two young girls, Ava and Tasha, as they get into adulthood and leave what they have known as a home for the first time. The friends test their freedoms and practice living
in the world, while being surrounded by dangerous men. Raw, delicate and bold, this story, directed by Rachel O’Riordan, is about growing up outside a family but inside the fiercest of friendships. Chandler cites her fascination with how people cope with the transience of these two elements, adding: “Bird explores the absence of those two things and the impact they might have on us. But it’s essentially a story about friendship and love, found against the odds”. A Royal Exchange Theatre and Sherman Cymru coproduction.

resident Obama’s recent visit to these shores will probably be best remembered for his trenchant, and in the eyes of some, unwelcome, observations on the upcoming EU Referendum.
Unfortunately, the brouhaha overshadowed an opportunity to assess the President’s legacy as he enters the home straight of his term of office, on what, unforeseen global emergencies aside, is likely to have been his last UK visit via Air Force One. So where do we start? Obamacare? Rescuing the US, and by extension the global economy with good oldfashioned government cash injections, to offset the fallout from the financial crisis? Leading the climate change agenda? Ending less-than-wholly successful full-scale combat missions in Iraq and Afghanistan? Reaching out to Cuba? Reforming a biased domestic criminal justice system? The Electrify Africa Act won’t make most Western playlists. But in terms of its projected long-term impact the legislation definitely deserves a slot. If there is one factor that is absolutely vital to propelling economic, educational and healthcare progress on the continent, while also cutting into poverty rates, it is access to power. The World Bank recently estimated that, excluding South Africa, Sub-Saharan Africa produces about the same amount of electricity as Argentina, which has around 5% of its population.

new fleet of 125mph electric trains operating between Manchester and Scotland will be launched by 2019, it has been announced.
The new trains, worth £120m, will be financed by Eversholt Rail, leased to TransPennine Express (TPE), and run between Liverpool and Manchester to Glasgow and Edinburgh. TPE’s Managing Director, Leo Goodwin said: “This is great news for our customers and we are delighted to have concluded the deals that will bring much needed and much wanted extra carriages across our network”. Passengers can expect to see a sizeable cut in travel times between cities in the north, with new trains also being rolled out between Liverpool and Newcastle. With 13m more seats provided each year, the expansion provided by the new fleet will be enough to fill the Old Trafford
“We need a lot more capacity with new routes and additional journey opportunities, seven days a week. Passengers want an end to overcrowding and an improved travel experience”. TPE have also promised their trains will have free Wi-Fi and media servers, advanced onboard customer information, more spacious seating, and power sockets at every seat.

Sounds like a sure-fire hit.
He said, “To support long-term economic growth and prosperity, the North needs a modern, high-quality rail service connecting towns and cities.

But the Act, which aims to add over 60m households to the electricity grid by 2020, is about much more than simple American altruism. Much of the infrastructural development across Sub-Saharan Africa over the last decade has been driven by Chinese funding. But continental frustration is building with what the archetypal Chinese stance which almost always insists that the business goes to Chinese companies using preponderantly Chinese workers. Meanwhile, Obama’s act explicitly supports US companies that partner with, and invest in, local firms and workers as a means of cementing long-run skill development while matching local needs.
Councillor Liam Robinson, Chair of the Rail North Limited Board, spoke of the impact the new services will have on the economy in both Manchester and the North in general.

ocated in the centre of Manchester’s bustling student community on Oxford Road, Chilango restaurant opened its doors late April. Following the success of its ten London branches, Chilango aims to bring its Mexican flavours to northerners.
and Mexican flavours, which include burritos, tacos and salads at low prices – prices ranging between £6 and £10 per person. The inspiration comes from authentic Mexican cuisine with addings of Mexican communities’ food habits in the US.
Upon entering the restaurant, what catches the eye is the fun design which creates a thriving atmosphere. An electric colour palette with neon and graffiti jumps off the walls, and the interiors are designed to inject some fun holiday spirit into the soul.
As the owners explain, the menu is a result of trips to Mexico, as well as Chicago, Los Angeles and San Francisco – home to three of the largest Mexican communities in the USA. From street vendors to highclass restaurant chefs, family cooks and recipes, the restaurant’s techniques and secrets have been picked up carefully to deliver a variety of flavours and colours.
Onto the food, Chilango intends to offer the best quality, a mixture of fresh ingredients
