Trafford Council leader in race for Mayor TNT News Sean Anstee, the Trafford Council leader, is in a bid to win the Greater Manchester mayoral race. Anstee, who became the youngest council leader in 2014 aged 26, will stand in this year’s elections as Manchester’s Conservative candidate. At a Tory party conference, the now 29-year-old said that the mayoral race in May could be a “game changer”. Trafford-born Anstee is the only Tory leader in 10 Greater Manchester councils, where all 9 other councils are Labour. The 29-year-old mayoral candidate has said that many

parts of Manchester do not feel particularly represented by the Labour party. “What they need is someone who will; and that’s what I’m going to try to do”. “Across the city, there are issues around worklessness, and getting young people off to the best start in life. “I think the Mayoralty [...] is a huge opportunity for Greater Manchester to have fresh, new, bold civic leadership of our place, to say we can be better than we are today”. Anstee will run against Labour candidate, Andy Burnham, Leigh MP. His competitors include Liberal Democrat, Jane Brophy,

English Democrat, Stephen Morris, UKIP representative, Shneur Odze and Green representative, Will Patterson. Despite a longstanding reign of labour leadership, Anstee stated “I think I need to challenge the assumption that the Mayoral election is going to produce a result that is already decided today. It isn’t”. The Conservative hopeful has also vowed to help first time buyers get on the housing ladder in their home communities. “It’s perfectly reasonable to have an expectation that you have the chance to buy a home in the area you grew up in”, he said.

“As developments spring up, there would be a period where a proportion of new homes would be reserved for locals”, he added “So when we’d say ‘we’re building homes for your children and grandchildren’, we’d really mean it”. He has also guaranteed that land will only be allocated for development once the required schools, roads, public transport and health facilities are in place. Anstee’s housing plan involves building thousands of new homes, encouraging development on brownfield land and pumping cash into transport and infrastructure.

Trafford projects hit big with £30k grant TNT News The Big Lottery Fund has granted almost £30,000 to three Trafford projects. The Big Lottery Fund supports a diverse range of projects which help people improve their skills. These projects allow people to build upon their skills whilst they work to strengthen their communities. Nine projects across the North West are sharing over £4million in the latest distribution of grant awards. The projects which have been awarded have received almost £10,000 each. Altrincham’s G-Force project has been granted £9,999. The funding will be used to create a community centre and youth club. The group believes that the grant will have a positive impact on the community. The activities offered at the community centre will work to reduce isolation. The second grant awarded went to Sports Work Cheshire. The funding goes to a project which supports disabled and young people. A total of £9,732 has been granted. The grant will be used to deliver swimming and lifestyle coaching sessions. These sessions will be delivered to groups of disabled children and youth who have no access to supported activities. The project will improve health and support well-being. The third project to be awarded is Trafford Centre for Independent Living – which is based in Sale. The centre was granted £8,647 for its Walks for All initiative.
