VOTE!
In an open letter to the ‘disenfranchised’ communities of Britain, in particular the black community, activist and political advisor Lee Jasper has given a dressing down to those who abstain from the democratic process in a TNT exclusive:
“As one of the founders of Operation Black Vote in 1996 I have long been an advocate of urging our disenfranchised black community to vote. The dream of Dr Martin Luther King was that we would wake up to our innate potential and become militant democrats. We have secured what rights we do have, because men and women like Dr King suffered the assassin’s bullet, the silently swinging noose and being beaten, raped or bludgeoned to death, for having the audacity, the sheer temerity to make the claim we are human beings. “That is a blood price, counted in lit-
erally millions of lives across the world and yet here in the heart of British democracy we prefer to vote for X Factor or I’m a Celebrity contestants than honour the precious sacrifice of the dead by voting. I’m reminded of spoilt kids in a sweet shop or the drunken man swimming in alcohol whilst his family goes hungry. Whilst our brothers and sisters face racism in the UK and Europe we hide in our ignorance and shame. “More than 21% of the black community are not registered to vote as opposed to 7% of the white population. Given the price we’ve paid to have that right,
that’s a disgrace. We should celebrate our right to vote and hold carnivals on election days. Over 30 years I’ve heard all the misguided excuses as to why we should vote, and have witnessed the very people who don’t vote suffer the dreadful indignity of enforced poverty and injustice. Our ancestors must look at us through the mists of ancestral time and weep. “Let’s be clear here, there is no such thing as not voting. In refusing to cast your vote you implicitly vote for the vested interests of the status quo. The idiotic portrayal of abstaining from
democratic engagement as a ‘revolutionary, conscious act’ only makes sense if were building revolutionary schools, houses and hospitals, opening revolutionary banks and lending revolutionary money. Anything else is a death sentence to our people. “It burns me that Manchester has virtually no local African-Caribbean councillors and that the arch fascist Nick Griffin MEP lords his racist self over the North West.”

A letter from
the Editor
I hope like myself, everyone enjoyed their Easter weekend festivities and indulged in great food, drink and a long overdue catch up with family and friends.
I also hope that all children that attended Hands on Hair’s 13th annual Easter egg hunt in conjunction with The Nubian Times enjoyed all the free giveaways, chocolate, games and Easter eggs and to whom I say a massive “see you all again next year.” My only regret is that some of the bigger traders and companies in the area didn’t make more of an effort to give back to the community that supports them. The news over the past couple of months has been dominated by tragedy; from the disappearance of the Malaysian plane and the missing Nigerian schoolgirls, to the ongoing revelations in the Oscar Pistorius trial. Then there was the heart-breaking death of Shereka Fab-Ann Marsh and of course the crises in Syria and the Ukraine. You can’t but wonder: “What is going on?” At The Nubian Times, we are now asking you to focus on the positives. Family and friends play a greater part of our own happiness than we often give them credit for. Our community is a place where we can share
the joy and burdens that life can bring. There are people giving back to our community in the form of charity, youth work, volunteering and so on and paving the way for the next generation, strengthening the community and offering hope for the future. Manchester as a whole, alongside our regional neighbours, has a lot to offer. There are few better places than Manchester to exercise your entrepreneurial ability; and with success. If you can’t find a job, get out there and create an enterprise that will employ not just yourself, but others around you who are waiting for that opportunity to shine. TNT is hosting our Speed Networking Forum at the Pod on Princess Road, Manchester, so come down and mingle and start building relationships with key members of our community along with local business owners. Give yourself a platform to network with new and exciting individuals and ideas and be motivated to make a change. That’s all from me for this month and I’ll leave you with this simple message: “be INSPIRED!”

Things are a bit of a struggle as every job I go for I’m shut down as soon as I start with that dreaded question I’m f*****. You know the one...“Have you got a criminal record?” Look I’m not saying I’m perfect but this sh**’s RIDICULOUS! I’m trying out here, just can’t catch a break. What the hell’s a guy to do, where do I turn now? Can’t go back, got a kid now, being a father’s important to me for my baby girl I have to do this. I live in Birmingham opportunities are few and far between for a guy like me. This government leaves men like me out here to reoffend or die! Read you paper and I can’t believe it’s so good, love your catch phrase “Bad news Sells. But good news inspires.” I need some inspiration, I’m unemployable. ... Wow... where do we begin! You’re an inspiration to me for the fact that you’re broadening your horizons and are now pioneering a journey of hope and real change. Doreen Lawrence Britain’s‘Most
There has never been a shred of doubt in our minds that Baroness Doreen Lawrence is one of the most courageous, efficacious and influential women of our generation, thus it’s no surprise she has won first place in the Woman’s Hour ‘Power List’. The 61 year-old who has been fighting for justice since her son Stephen Lawrence was brutally murdered in an unprovoked, racist attack in 1993, is being deemed as “an example to all” by 8517_Birley_Nubian Times Ad_Layout home secretary Theresa May, as she is 1 honoured with the title as being ‘The
most Powerful Woman in Britain’. Stephen Lawrence was only 18 years old when he was attacked as he waited at a bus stop in South East London. Over 20 years later the recognition for Baroness Lawrence’s hard work, determination and sheer dedication to getting justice for her son is finally being acknowledged. “What is most striking about this woman is the great strength that she has shown over the decades – strength to carry on, to keep on going, in the 28/04/2014 12:52even Page 1 most difficult times when all seemed impossible,” Theresa May said in a recent statement.
Powerful Woman’
“Also striking is the persistence she has shown because she has never given up... throughout it all, over the years, despite blow after blow... she has dealt with everything with absolute dignity,” May continues. “She truly is an example to us all.” This year’s list is being described as the ‘game-changer’ as it moves away from the safeness and predictability of last year’s winners which saw The Queen winning first place. The new list can be deemed a reflection of a modern Britain whilst still enforcing the powerful role in which women play in our society.
The Nubian Times
The List
1. Doreen Lawrence OBE - anti-racism campaigner 2. Julie Bailey CBE - campaigner and founder of Cure the NHS 3. Professor Nazneen Rahman - geneticist and cancer specialist 4. Carmel McConnell - activist and founder of Magic Breakfast 5. Julie Bentley - chief executive of Girlguiding 6. Nimco Ali and Leyla Hussein - anti-FGM activists 7. Dido Harding - CEO, TalkTalk Group 8. Francesca Martinez - comedian, actress and disability campaigner 9. Laura Bates - founder of the Everyday Sexism Project 10. Caitlin Moran - journalist and author
Devil’s advocate: “While we can be inspired by Doreen Lawrence’s placing at the top of the list and look upon it with great pride, what does it say about women in this country when even the ‘most powerful woman in Britain’ cannot provoke real change in our failing police and government or penetrate the secrecy and institutionalised bigotry therein?” nT

NHS Charge
You may or may not have heard it through the grapevine, but we at TNT like to spread the facts out on the table, like the evidence of a police case, for you to have your say, whether you agree or disagree or are indifferent about it. A new report by former Health Minister, Lord Warner, recommends charging people to see their GP, for overnight stays in hospital or for NHS services. It is no surprise that the report sparked an immediate heated debate amongst doctors and the general public. ...continued at

MMU Birley Campus on countdown to completion In September 2014, Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU) will open its new Birley Campus in Hulme, placing the Faculty of Education and the Faculty of Health, Psychology and Social Care at the heart of the local community. MMU are proud to be developing Birley as a community campus and have already started to establish close links with many local schools and organisations such as Hulme Community Garden Centre, The Louise Da-Cocodia Trust, Big Life Group and Fathers Against Violence. These partnerships range from teaching placements and health screenings to student volunteers and support for local projects and events.
Community access From 2015 onwards, the ground floor of the main academic building (pictured) will be available for community use. It features state-of-the-art facilities, including a drama and dance studio, multi-purpose hall, treatment rooms, cafés and informal meeting spaces.
Jobs As jobs become available at Birley they will be advertised at The Works in Moss Side and via the MMU Jobs website www.mmu.ac.uk/jobs. We are also planning to host a jobs fair later this summer for local residents.
Free equipment As we prepare to move to Birley, local organisations could benefit from donations of free equipment that will not be transferred to the new campus. The list of available items includes specialist teaching equipment, office equipment, tables and chairs. If you are interested in applying for any free items, or for more information about the new campus and working with MMU please contact Carla Nuttall on 0161 247 3395 or c.nuttall@mmu.ac.uk

&WHITE Prison ban on books: Is this a ban on rehabilitation?
BLACK It’s not so
I have always understood or at least hoped that imprisonment was for the most part a sort of last resort punishment reserved for serious offending where the state intervened to try and reform offenders and after a period in prison the individual would be returned back to the community a better person than when they left. What happens in prison should be of interest and concern to everyone within the society, after all the Ministry of Justice (MOJ) gets a budget of around £9 Billion of taxpayers money to spend on its overall running of the justice system with a huge proportion going to prisons. Black people

and people of other minority ethnic backgrounds, around 10% of the population, disturbingly make up about a quarter of the overall prison population. This is why the MOJ’s recent decision to impose a ban on family, friends and visitors giving books to prisoners caused such concern to a number of individuals, groups and organisations. Among those most concerned was the newly established National Initiative for Leadership and Empowerment (The NILE Group) a network including the National Black Police Association, Association of Black Probation Officers and the Network, rep-

resenting black prison staff. The NILE Group correctly point out not only the disproportionality in the criminal justice system but also the disproportional black exclusions from schools, raising fundamental questions about the implications of such a ban on books. There are much wider concerns about where the current MOJ is going, with plans to close down smaller prisons in favour of larger US Penitentiary style prisons. Organisations such as Partners of Prisoners (POPS) and others have done a good job of trying to call attention to the need for appropriate reforms, whether

thinking of adoption? A loving and secure family can give children the best start in life, but many children still wait for this. There are many children from your community waiting for adoption. Last year only 17% of these children from black or minority ethnic backgrounds were placed with their ‘forever family’, 6 times lower than from other communities. Adoption can change these children’s futures. Children just like Toby, Leah, Max and Alice are waiting for a family who can provide them with the love and stability they deserve. Together we can change the lives of children through adoption.
Over 200 girls are missing after a mass raid at a girls boarding school was carried out by suspected Boku Haram militias. Translating to ‘Western education is forbidden’ in the local Hausa language, Boku Haram is an Islamic fundamentalist group fighting to create an Islamic state in the North East of the country and as the name suggest is opposed to ‘Western education’, in particular the teaching of girls. The ongoing incident has been met universally with shock and sadness in a country often divided along religious, ethnic and political lines. It is the manner of the abduction that has brought a sense of unity. 234 girls aged 16-18 were shipped off in trucks deep into the forest, to what fate is unclear. Families and locals have been critical of the government, army and local politicians, not least because of a false claim by a military spokesperson that the girls had been found but also the feeling that local politicians have seized the opportunity to lay blame at the feet of their opponents to gain local favour. So far as many as 50 girls have returned to safety after escaping from the backs of the trucks they
were transported in as the militants took their guns to villages on the way and burnt them to the ground. Boku Haram are implicated after claiming responsibility for bomb attacks last week which killed over 75 people in a region which has been under martial law since 2013. There are voices however who are so disillusioned with the government that politicians and the military themselves have not been ruled out as this tragic mystery continues. Across Nigeria, people are hoping for a swift end to this twisted ordeal. Are you from or do you have family in Nigeria? Let us know your thoughts.

Hands on Hair’s eggs-ceptional Easter event at Alex Park
Manchester’s
Commonwealth Games Batonbearers named
Hair salon Hands on Hair joined forces with The Nubian Times for the second year running to host the largest free Easter Egg Hunt in Manchester on Easter Sunday. The 13th annual event happened at Manchester’s historical Alexandra Park. With Carnival missing from the park this year, the Hands on Hair Easter Egg Hunt took on a special significance. Well over 100 children, many of whom are in care or from struggling families, as well as single-parent homes, took part to make it truly a funfest extravaganza. Lions and bunnies were on hand to entertain those present, not to mention sweets, cup-cakes, chocolate, Easter eggs and prizes in abundance. Hula hoops were flying, children screaming (with joy), egg and spoons all over the place and little boys and girls challenging themselves to energy and endurance levels that put the adults to shame. The proprietor of Hands on Hair Ms Nevins said, “the adult races were hilarious, no rules, cheating all the way,

they were the biggest kids of all and are all banned from next year’s event!” Biggest supporters in the community were Chicken Run, on Yarborough Street and Raymond’s/Malik Superstores, Withington Road, Whalley Range. Contributions came from The Paper Shop on Platt Lane and Parkside Superstore, Fallowfield, the Co-Operative and Bargain World, also both on Withington Road and Friends of Alexandra Park. Manchester City Council (MCC) have pledged to donate towards some of the running cost of this mammoth event and also for the first time ever have pledged to help fund the event for next year. Maura O’Brien, MCC’s neighbourhood engagement and delivery Officer, showed her support on the day
with much needed practical help. “Don’t know what I expected, but this is a fabulous event and turnout, I will definitely help you fill in funding form next year, well done, I only wish MCC could have done more,” said the council worker. Ms Nevins added: “I would wish next year the local superstores and business would indeed donate and support, giving local kids the opportunity to forget their troubles, laugh and play for a few hours. Being a foster carer for well over a decade it’s a cause close to my heart. “A special thanks to all volunteers especially those who have been there from the beginning. Big hugs to you all.”

The six Batonbearers have been selected by Manchester’s sporting community in recognition of their contribution to sport and the community. The athletes selected are Lauren Toms, the 19 year-old Swimmer from New Moston, 24 year-old athlete Lee Whitely from Wythenshawe and BMXer Valerie Zebrokova, from Fallowfield, 16. As well as the young sportspeople chosen are Alan Boyle, a Lacrosse club secretary from Stockport, football coach John Gilmore from Droylsden and Trafford-based cricket coach Ralph Aldred. Former Olympic Champion Dame Kelly Holmes, President of Commonwealth Games England, said: “Our England Batonbearers are going to play a crucial part when the Queen’s Baton Relay arrives in England on May 31st. “They have all been selected due to their passion for sport and the way in which they share this with their communities and look to get people involved and active.” The Batonbearers will carry the baton to a variety of events and activities to showcase sports facilities in the area. Sports on show will include athletics, netball,

BMXing and mountain biking. Councillor Rosa Battle, Manchester City Council Executive Member for Culture and Leisure said: “Manchester truly embraces sport and the Queen’s Baton Relay will have added significance as it passes through the last UK city to host the Commonwealth Games. “As the home of a number of world-class sporting facilities Manchester is a shining example of the type of benefits and long-lasting legacy an event of this scale can bring.” The XX Commonwealth Games takes place in Glasgow from 23rd July to 3rd August. Commonwealth Games England is sending a 400-strong team to compete across the 17 sports. TnT

Ask Sciatica is the name given to a type of pain that comes from irritation or compression of the sciatic nerve, which runs from your lower back down the back of each leg. The pain itself can range from being mild to a level that feels unmanageable. It can last anywhere between a couple of days, to months at a time (known as chronic sciatica). Sciatica is different to normal back pain as it usually affects the lower back and the pain travels down through the buttocks and even into the calf muscles in the leg. Pain in the rear and/or a shooting pain are the main symptoms, but other symptoms include numbness, tingling and muscle weakness which are all made worse by:
• Sneezing, coughing or laughing • Standing or sitting for a long period of time • Bending backwards As I mentioned earlier sciatica is caused by the irritation of the sciatic nerve and the most common cause of the irritation is a slipped disc. Your spine is made up of vertebrae which are supported by discs and surrounded by nerves. When the supporting discs split and move out of place this irritates the sciatic

nerve and causes pain. As you get older your discs become harder, tougher and more brittle which leads to the increased likelihood of them slipping out of place. Other causes of sciatica include:
ers from your GP as well as drugs like gabapentin and pregablin that are used for pain associated with nerves. You can also do a number of things without taking medication to help with the pain.
• Infection • Injury • Growth/tumour on the spine
• Exercise and physiotherapy • Think before you lift • Stand upright with your weight balanced on both feet • Sit upright with a small cushion to support the small of the back • In bed your mattress should be firm and not too soft to help support your back
In order to confirm that your pain is being caused by the sciatic nerve, a GP will conduct the straight leg raise test, which can also be done at home. You lie on your back with your legs straight and then raise one leg before then raising your foot up. If this causes pain or an increase in the existing pain, then it is an indication that your pain is being caused by the sciatic nerve. The pain from sciatica can be relieved with over the counter remedies from your local pharmacy, including ibuprofen and co-codamol. Make sure you speak to the pharmacy team before making any purchases. If these don’t work then you can get stronger painkill-

Clematis are one of the most versatile plants you can have in your garden. There are over 400 different species, varieties and colours to choose from
This particular plant grows well in the ground but adapts well to being potted and will climb on and around everything. It is one of the UK’s favourite garden plants. For the most part clematis are climbers. There are many different varieties of clematis which yield weird, wonderful and colourful hybrids like: • Large flowered single hybrid • Large flowered double hybrid • Tulip shaped • Bell shaped • Saucer shaped • Montana

With blooms that can grow up to 20cm in diameter, clematis are the largest flower hybrids grown to produce magnificent summer displays that can last throughout the warmer months. To prolong life and yield a second flourish of flowering, prune back shoots that have reached a maximum height of 30-50cm in early summer. Go to your local garden centre and treat yourself to one of the many varieties that are around, clematis is a TNT summer must have plant and will look great adorning any trellis or garden fence.

A BODY is WET workout FOR YOU
Remember to do your TNT-Body daily weight conditioning:
50 Squats
2x1 Min. Planks
Swimming and exercises in water such as aqua aerobics, synchronised swimming, or diving are, and will always be, a fabulous workout. This is mainly down to the combination of an aerobic workout – provided by constantly using all muscles as you work against the water – added to the low stress on joints and bones as a result of the water buoyancy, so there is no better workout for EVERYBODY!! The benefits of working out in water are far-reaching but let’s start with lowering of risk of chronic illnesses, such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes and stroke. Many people swim to reduce stress and it is a proven depression reliever and obviously helps keep your weight under control. Q. When I go swimming I feel like I am starving straight after, why does this happen? A. Basically this happens not because you are hungry but because you are dehydrated. Try to remember if you ran for an hour you would sweat, it is exactly the same in the water except the water immediately washes the perspiration away. Always take a bottle of fresh
25 Burpees
water to the pool with you and drink throughout your workout, this will help you bypass the vending machine when you finish. Q. What is the best thing to eat when I go swimming and when do I eat? A. Depending on your own personal eating plan I would recommend you don’t eat for at least an hour before swimming. Imagine if you will, putting lots of food into a can, mixing in fluid and then shaking it. Not a pretty sight, so be gentle on your stomach, eat light, healthy options. Fruits, vegetables, meat and some complex carbohydrates (a few hours before) are fine. No fizzy drinks especially for kids. Post-workout you can eat straight away but remember proteins help rebuild muscles so eat perhaps eggs or chicken and vegetables after for weight loss and maintenance. Q. How do I get involved? A. Your local leisure centre will have a pool with public access and a timetable of classes and other activities. Try to make it a habit. Take the kids, go with a friend or try joining a swim or triathlon club.

rust me, this book will be the last thing you read before you go to sleep. This book is about Christine, who always wakes up every day with no memory of the day before. She goes through the same routine of getting up and being told daily by a man he is her husband. You can tell from the outset something just isn’t right. This book made me want to live like a pig and not tidy my home in my eagerness to keep on reading. There is nothing more fulfilling than wanting to get to the end of a psychological thriller. It has its fair share of suspense, but what this book does is make you think that you know who the culprit is but, you ask the question ‘how can this be’? The two people in Chris-
tine’s life are her husband Ben and Dr Nash. Any one of the two could be working to hide the real truth from her. This book is Christine’s journal and because it is an ordinary, suburban tale, you can empathise more with the vulnerable protagonist. This book is in real time, with you uncovering the truth as Christine herself does. This is a page turner of a book that keeps you guessing until the end. A debut novel from the author S J Watson and one which may at times seem far-fetched but is never unconvincing. It is nevertheless a fantastic read. S J Watson is an English author who I will certainly look out for in future. Borrow this book from your nearest library.

eading is a fantastic way to escape from the daily chores of life but if a book is truly good it will take us into the pages. Being whisked away to somewhere different, albeit through the back of a wardrobe, or being held on top of the Empire State Building by a gorilla, is just one way we can forget about the pressures of life. This book has been a favourite of mine since I borrowed it from my friend in 2001.

Memoirs of a Geisha is a compelling story that will take you to Kyoto, Japan where a nine year-old girl and her sister have just been sold to a geisha boarding house. What the author Arthur Golden achieves is a book where you can hear the clatter of the wheels of the rickshaw on the cobbled, narrow streets; smell the silk of the kimonos and feel the inquisitiveness of the protagonist Chiyo. This is a beautifully seductive story of love, friendship and loss. It is one which is simple to understand but powerful enough to take you there. This book is full of grace and femininity and one which the author, a man, does with supreme effortlessness. A beautifully written tale of romance in the face of adversity and a triumph to all those who believe in love. Memoirs of a Geisha is a hard book to put down and one which will stay with you forever. One of my favourites, it’s even on my bookshelf twice.

here are some times in my life when I am reminded that the colour of my skin is always one to be championed and celebrated. Recently on a break on the coast, my family and I encountered unfairness in an ugly and uneducated way. No lies, this made me feel quite rejected and hurt that someone would so blatantly pass judgement because of my ethnicity. I am a proud and educated woman of colour and I needed inspirational words to make light of this situation. I live in a cosmopolitan area in the heart of London and as such I was shocked and surprised to have been treated in this manner. Now, I am not saying that is does not happen, it is just more undercover and subtle. I own many books and finding one that encourages rather than remind us that
life can be quite tough. But, it took just one poem by Langston Hughes, an African-American poet. He wrote of the battles of a person of colour in a celebratory way. Being raised in Harlem in the 1920s, Hughes understood the effects of prejudice on the aspirations of people of colour. However, this poem is not just for people of colour, it is for all of us who face struggle in our lives. It made me think that racialism should not be made to fester, and this is my vent. This poem made me laugh and as they say ‘laughter is the best cure’ and if you had never heard of Langston Hughes before this article, this is one you should look out for and enjoy with a smile.

Growing up alongside male family members and fellow students, it’s easy to notice the difference in the way young men tend to portray themselves to their peers compared to how they do it to others, such as their seniors. Amongst people of a similar age and status, they usually express a cooler, more laidback demeanour. Whether it is down to a changing culture which is glamourising the lifestyles of celebrities, who spend a vast majority of their time partaking in mostly leisure activities, such as Tyler, the Creator, or because the pressure to ‘be a man’ and take on male-orientated responsibilities has been reduced in the recent years, it’s still a significant change. The male predecessors of our generation were more interested in securing employment – as opposed to the majority of today’s young men aged 16-19 – in order to support their future family and their lifestyle in the early 1970s . Due to the rigid gender roles being reduced, women are becoming more independent and self-sufficient. This means that upholding males to the same expectations is becoming less necessary. “More women could enter the work force. However, the gender role of men re-

Express mained as that of a breadwinner.” That was an insert taken from a popular website speaking of the changes that took place in the ‘70s; it reinforces this view. Also, women supposedly make up 46% of the UK’s current work force. The aspirations of the older male figures in the lives of teenage girls seemed to have been considerably more practical than those of their male counterparts. When asked how he views the social role of young men now, one 23 year-old replied, “it depends really, ‘cause boys can be boys for longer.” His younger brother, a college student, agreed. Young men of the current generation cannot be considered lazy compared to their forefathers as the same rules cannot be applied.

GROWING
Forget what the popular sentiment might be about Americans. I’ve heard it all when traversing the globe: we’re rude, we’re loud, we’re obnoxious, we’re arrogant, we’re fat, we’re ignorant. I suppose that may be true for the headline hogging celebutants and burly politicians who populate many a tabloid; but for all that, some of us have itchy feet. We’re curious souls who like to explore the great outdoors or the intimate confines of hidden-away, indoor spaces, thousands of miles from whence we call home; or hops, skips and jumps away from whence we rest our heads. We like meeting interesting people from all walks of life and all manners of existence. We live for learning about new cultures and historic old ones. We drink up experiences like a mellow glass of red. I’m one of those types. My passport reads like a journal of past lives a fortune teller might glean from coffee stains in a tea cup. I’m a New Yorker with some southern roots (grandad was a minister, my father a university president, mother a pharmacist). I always dreamed of getting up and going as soon as I was of legal age to do so. I jaunted to Bristol to study film, then spent some

time in the Sahara, Korea, Japan, Mexico and a few other spots before I instantly knew that I’d be living out of my suitcase until the travel bug wore off. More than 18 countries later, the travel bug is as strong as ever. So why am I here, nestled between the black and white ink-stained pages of The Nubian Times? Simple. I consider myself a storyteller. Sometimes a story comes from the floodlights of Paris Fashion Week where one of my friends may be presenting a line that they helped create for Lanvin for instance. It may be rooting cageside as an idol fights for glory in the UFC. It could even be hunting down the last traces of blues legend Robert Johnson in the post-segregation delta south of the US, or communing on couscous with Somali transplants in Geneva. My appetite for seeing the world from the front seat of a motorbike nicknamed ‘adventure’ is beyond large. It’s enormous. What I hope to bring to each and every reader is a sidecar riding shotgun on that motorbike with their name attached to it. I hope you’ll follow along on this journey.

I tried my best to fit in and yet add that little bit of Mr L panache. For example I had the customary fade, but I had the ‘S curl’ Jheri curl on top and my jeans conformed to the baggy variety except I had Karl Kani on the backside because Fresh Prince wore them. When I look back on pictures of myself I am secure in the knowledge that I had to go through that stage of insecurity as a rite of passage and apart from friends singing ‘Soul Glow’ (from Coming to America) when I entered the room, I got through it unscathed and unscarred. Teenagers of this generation are not so lucky, for many their childhood fashion errors are permanent and dangerous. A Guardian article in 2010 went as far as to say one fifth of the British population now has a tattoo, with many of these being children. The law states that it is illegal to give anyone under the age of 18 a tattoo, but speaking to some children, as long as you look old enough, they assume you are of age. I teach children who are 15 and who have been ‘inked up’. With a surge of online DIY kits that allow you to get a homemade tattoo, it has led to the spreading of diseases, including hepatitis B and even HIV. I am not disappointed with any child who is just trying to fit in a society where most of their idols have ‘tats’, I am disappointed with students’ parents who don’t educate their kin. It is surely our responsibility, as influential adults, to educate and inform them that what they do today will affect and influence their tomorrow. We were young once too.

moms are played by Cocoa Brown, Zulay Henao, Wendi McLendon Covey (Bridesmaids) and Amy Smart. The film lacks true character depth as there are far too many palpable jokes and put-ons. It’s chocka with stereotypes around single parenting and upper class women finding it problematic taking care of their kids. The film portrays a similar Boyz n’ the Hood-type “struggle” where deprived black women can’t get a respite after caring for and supporting their kids but the movie does appreciate the value of strong, single women who can cope even if they lack moral support. Tyler Perry does a wonderful job in portraying how single, working women, can manage their daily jobs and looking after their children and how they appreciate love whilst not seeking it.

The film is a typical Tyler Perry emotional rollercoaster of a ride, however this particular comedy/drama is loaded with clichés. With the economic recovery looking increasingly entrenched, inflation and unemployment at multi-year lows, rising house prices, warmer temperatures and World Cup dreams, the government can reasonably hope that its fiscal austerity programme will soon be old and boring news.

PUBLICLY EXPOSED
Fat chance. For a start, only 40% of the planned spending cuts, which will run through to 2019, have been implemented. While much of the controversy surrounding the Chancellor’s attempts to rebalance the nation’s finances has revolved around the fallout from tightened benefit restrictions, there are also significant implications for public sector employment. According to the Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR), 240,000 public sector jobs have disappeared under the coalition. The OBR estimate that another 750,000 paid roles are set to bite the dust over the next five years. Given that since before the days of MV Empire Windrush much of our traction on the income ladder has been on the back of public sector

employment, it’s worth preparing for a very different future. What will this future look like? For a start, with fewer resources meeting greater demand for service delivery, both central and local government will increasingly seek to “eliminate waste and duplication” by sharing and merging facilities, as well as accelerating the transfer of key functions to private providers. For example, the last four years have seen NHS outsourcing move from mainly catering, cleaning and security functions to clinical services and management. Indeed, the recent news that the Peterborough and Stamford NHS Foundation Trust is seeking private sector bidders to take over its entire operation is unlikely to be a singular event.
Moreover, those of us who manage to keep our jobs in the transition can expect grossly different terms of conditions, including lower pay, part-time and zero hour contracts, fewer holiday entitlements, shorter notice periods and weaker pension provision. By the way, the government has recently introduced new rules which will make it much harder to take an employer to an employment tribunal. The upshot is the old certainties about the public sector, especially its willingness and ability to provide anything like a stable backdrop for family and community welfare and progress, have been overturned. The tailspin will be painful.

Privately Sir Alex Ferguson must be livid that his chosen successor could well have handed a 19th title to arch-rivals Liverpool by gifting them 6 points over two games but, aside from that, Moyes’ failures were extensive. Embarrassingly timid press conferences, player discontent, lack of any real tactical nous, poor transfer work, terrible results and an even worse brand of football, the feeling before United made the announcement was that Moyes was out of his depth.

Sheffield’s Kell Brook is set for his US debut, most likely against American IBF champion Shawn Porter, in the summer.
Brook boasts an unblemished record and was tipped to fight Bolton’s Amir Khan before the deal was scuppered, paving the way for the former British champion to set a course for the States, in a fight in which he is expected to be favoutrite.
Giggs There are no hard feelings between Moyes and the fans. Fans can have no complaints about his work-ethic and determination to make his time at United a success and Moyes can make no claims that he wasn’t backed by ferocious support home and away. The prospect of a new manager with a £150m war-chest has lifted the tension and dread that typified the final weeks of Moyes’ tenure. With club legend Ryan Giggs named as interim manager, most United fans are buzzing about the last four games of this season to forget, even if Giggs is not expected to take the job for keeps – at least not yet. Giggs is one who many United fans consider a future manager but very few consider ready to take on the role. This time will give him a vital taste of managerial life with zero pressure, before handing over to a coach who he can work with and learn from, much like Zinedine Zidane at Real. With Paul Scholes already joining a setup which features Nicky

Interim replacement for David Moyes as Manchester United manager after the Scot was sacked from the post after just 10 months of a very bad season
Butt and Phil Neville, there are signs of a dynasty emerging reminiscent of Bayern Munich and Barcelona. Interestingly, the man responsible for instilling those models at both clubs is the front-runner to take the Old Trafford hot-seat in the summer. That man is Netherlands boss Louis van Gaal, currently in charge of the Oranje until his contract expires in July. LVG has all the attributes to get United back on their feet in the short-term before making way for a figurehead of a more long-term project. He likes to play positive football, with vertical ball rotation and overloading attacking moves. Perhaps more importantly is his no-nonsense approach which would bring an unruly dressing room into line. Moyes was like a substitute teacher in a classroom of arrogant, spoilt teenagers and he was crucified. It wasn’t Moyes’ fault, but it was because of Moyes, just like he wasn’t a bad manager or person, just a bad fit.

Manchester United veteran Ryan Giggs proudly took charge on Saturday as he watched his team matesturned-playing-squad thrash strugglers Norwich City 4-0 at a ‘bouncing’ Old Trafford. No one is getting ahead themselves, fans, players or Giggs himself, this was an opponent that has haemorrhaged goals all season and are under the charge of a caretaker themselves, but several aspects of Saturdays ‘dead rubber’ were significant. The game was United’s biggest home, league win of the season, it saw their

highest stats for shots, passes and through balls since Sir Alex Ferguson departed last summer as well. Despite the mood, all the talk of positive football and shouts of ‘attack, attack, attack’ from the Stretford End from the first whistle, the first half was a tepid affair and despite the promise of a more direct, intense build up play, only came alive after Rooney nestled a penalty in the bottom right corner. The second half is where it all happened. After Giggs decided to field an experienced team in his maiden game, Juan Mata found himself on the bench, only to come on in the second half and bag a brace and the link up play between Chicharito and Mata in particular had many pre-
dicting a much greater goal margin. Regardless of what happens over the next four weeks it is clear that Giggs, Phil Neville, Nicky Butt and Paul Scholes will be a part of the set up in what is once again an exciting future for United fans. The weekend also saw bitter rivals Liverpool succumb to Jose Mourinho’s tactical masterclass and Manchester City moving a step closer to a second title in three years thanks to typically strong run from Yaya Toure, finished with style and power by the 31 year-old, who seems to get better with age. The irony of course was all three of these games brought delight to most United fans thanks to what you could call ‘the Moyes effect’.

The year in fashion got off to a good start in January 2014 when fashion designer Riccardo Tisci revealed his new Spring collection for Givenchy, featuring none other than afro-centric ‘90s sensation Erykah Badu. Black and white images of the soulful On & On singer circulated the worldwide web as we were reminded once again that black beauty is very much a real and thriving force to be reckoned with.

Proud to be a black ‘Miss Manchester’ finalist “One of the main reasons I entered was to push the fact beauty is not fixed, it’s fluid and ever-changing. There is a false, fixed stereotype and ideal of beauty and it needs to be broken for the self esteem of girls from minority cultures and races.
