Editor In Chief Well, it’s that time of the month again, where I speak out loud about thoughts and of course the issues you the reader may raise with me, throughout the month. Everyone wants to hear about what’s going on in their community; be it news, events or achievements, education or business and quite rightly so. Numerous individuals in our communities are great sources of news, exceptional role models, entrepreneurs, over-achievers and pioneers in technology, science, education, sport and not forgetting entertainment. Just to name a small selection of what Manchester in its entirety has to offer. So is it not right that we inform, educate and cover your stories, not just the bad or sad news but also the inspirational news as well. All of which happen in and around the local areas that form this melting pot which is this great city? Yet when the local media comes into contact with such individuals, pioneers, mentors, why are they, at times, reluctant to share their story with the very community they live in and support? Should we allow their story to die with them with no lessons or experiences learnt? How can we inform you, if we are not to be assigned to or be ambassadors of local news...do you really believe the ‘giants’ report it better? The question you need to ask yourself is that is mainstream your best option when it clearly

lacks a true reflection of multiculturalism within its ranks? The front page story sheds light on this creeping insidious issue. I can’t help but wonder that if alternative publications such as ‘The Nubian Times’ did not take the time to recognise your achievements within our community, no matter how large or small, could we really rely on other media outlets that are outside the community to report on it as it should be? On another topic which seems to be striking a chord with our readers – the EU. Should we stay or should we go? The government and so many so called independent bodies tell us we need to stay, as we would suffer great loss in many different aspects such as business, the economy, jobs and such. But ask yourself this, if we all did as we were told, the words entrepreneur, pioneer, inventor, sole trader etc would not exist, should we not take risks? Should we really fear the unknown? I too, like many of you out there, have my own thoughts and views but like you guys, am I prepared to get it wrong?..Not so much... Harry Samuels, an NUS delegate from the University of Oxford, has said that the appointment of Ms. Bouattia was undemocratic, as she was not elected under a system of “one member, one vote”. He continued “Obviously her election enshrines the fact that the NUS no longer represents all students, but there are other grievances

we have with the rest of the organisation”. This year a University of York movement designed to reform the voting system, to give a vote to every individual member, was rejected by the conference. A spokeswoman revealed that the current voting system had been in place since 1922 – and that the issue of one member, one vote had been discussed.

28-year-old Malia Bouattia arrived in the UK aged 7 after she and her parents fled their home in Algeria, as “terrorists rained gunfire” on her school. From that point, a desire for a good level of education for their daughter had brought her parents to the UK. She attended the University of Birmingham and has held the post of NUS Black Students Officer since 2014.

In a speech she shunned the notion of being racist and facist by remarking “I know too well the price of terrorism, the consequences of violence and oppression, I saw a country ripped apart by terror and was pushed into exile by its doing. I know too well the damage done by racism and persecution – I faced it everyday”.

he release of the highly anticipated ‘Barbershop 3 - The Next Cut’ movie has been marred by controversy. The creators of the hit comedy film – released in UK cinemas on 19 April – are being sued by playwright J.D. Lawrence. Lawrence, also known as Ronald Dickerson, has filed a lawsuit against the Barbershop films which he claims ripped off his stage play ‘Scissors’. The New Yorkbased playwright and actor had tried to stop the film from being released in the US. A statement released by MGM and Warner Bros reportedly reads: “This op-

portunistic lawsuit falsely attempts to discredit the gifted writers, producers, and directors who brought the Barbershop characters and stories to life over the last fourteen years. We will vigorously defend against these frivolous claims and seek all appropriate remedies from Mr. Dickerson for filing his exploitative suit”. Lawrence’s play Scissors, toured the US from 1998 until 2001. The play reportedly also takes place in a shop in a Black neighbourhood, and apparently focuses on the importance of the shop to the community. In the play, there is also an elderly barber, like Eddie, (played by Cedric the Entertainer) and plenty of jokes about “white folks” being clowned for being white.

The writer claims there’s also an extended sequence about the OJ Simpson murder trial. Critics have cited however that what Lawrence includes in his gripe, sounds like any barbershop in America. He wants $20 million (£14 million) from Warner Brothers, who distributed the film,

and Showtime, who produced the spin-off series. It’s not clear why Lawrence waited all these years to speak up, although critics have suggested that it could have something to do with waiting for the franchise to grow in order to score a big payday.

x-Prime Suspect actor Joseph Jacobs – who starred alongside Dame Helen Mirren – came into our offices to talk about his upcoming controversial role in a play – ‘Psychopathy & The Single Girl’. The 34-year-old is to star alongside Beth Hunter who plays the lead as the venge-

ful Miss Anne Dry. Written by playwright and former Granada TV Journalist Nakib Narat, the production is “a play for contemporary Manchester audiences”. “According to researchers”, Nakib states, “journalists carry all the traits of clinically diagnosed psychopaths”. The production is set in modern Manchester in the city’s newsrooms and in the Beetham Tower where a lethal cat

and mouse game of wits is played out between Anne Dry and city lawyer Judge Mikael A Still. “It’s about the psychopathy of a single girl. It’s a dark play with splashes of humour... Hannibal Lecter-style. The lead is a single woman trying to get her revenge on men”, Joseph told TNT. For people of colour in the acting industry, there are “hurdles. Things are changing but slowly. The Oscars

highlighted the issue. In Manchester it’s tough, unless you’re doing your own thing”, Joseph outlined. Speaking in reminiscence of his Prime Suspect stint, Joseph said: “It was fabulous [working with Dame Helen Mirren]. She was like the torch bearer for women back then in a man’s world. That was my big break really”. “Bringing the play from script to stage is no easy task. It’s been a long process

of writing but it is the actors that make the production translate well and come alive on stage”, Nakib concluded.

t least 239 unaccompanied refugee children permanently disappeared from UK care facilities in 2015. According to a joint investigation undertaken by BBC 5 Live and Buzzfeed News, the immensely alarming figure represents a 75% rise in the number of lone asylum-seeking children going missing from care. The figures come as a result of freedom of information requests which were delivered to 140 local authorities throughout England and Wales. Shockingly, they also revealed that 51 children disappeared from care in October 2015 alone. In the words of the report: “There are fears some of the

children are being taken into a life of slavery and exploitation”. It also suggested that the children are being harmed in cannabis farms, the sex industry or sweatshops. Other findings have revealed that the Home Office is “releasing children into unchecked accommodation”, despite concerns that they would be trafficked. Currently, the missing children are being treated as at “low” or “medium” risk, and councils are “struggling” to provide enough safe and secure accommodation for them. These findings also helped to unveil the fact that the

number of Vietnamese children going missing from care has tripled over the last year. Libby Freeman, founder of the refugee charity Calais Action, has demanded the government launch “a full and proper investigation”. Ms. Freeman also revealed:

“Unlike in Calais, where they are refusing to take responsibility, they can’t sidestep it here. Austerity and the cuts are partly to blame for this. The social care system has been damaged and more and more people are falling through the net”.

A frightening 1 in 4 black men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime and a poll of over 3,500 men of all ethnicities conducted for Prostate Cancer UK revealed that the vast majority of men have no idea what the hidden prostate gland does for them. The prostate is key to sex but 54% of men don’t know where it is in their body, only 8% know what it does and 17% are unaware they even have one.

jury has concluded that 96 football fans, who died as a result of a crush in the 1989 Hillsborough disaster, were unlawfully killed. The conclusion sees the end of the longest jury hearing in British legal history. On Tuesday 26 April the jurors ruled that the demeanour of fans did not contribute to the tragedy, which occurred as supporters were crushed before an FA Cup semi-final between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest on 15 April 1989. The verdict could see former South Yorkshire Police chief superintendent and match commander David Duckenfield stand trial for manslaughter. The jury decided that Mr. Duckenfield’s actions amounted to “gross negligence” due to a breach of his duty of care towards fans. At 2.52pm Mr. Duckenfield gave the order to open exit Gate C in the Leppings Lane end of the stadium, consequently enabling around 2,000 fans to pile into the already packed pens behind one of the goals. It has also been uncovered that police and ambulance services contributed to the loss of lives by failing to address the situation. The conclusion of the unlawful killings, which were reached by the jury of nine, was greeted with sobbing, cheers, echoes of ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone. CONTINUED ONLINE

pril 22 marked the day that Stephen Lawrence – a black British man from Eltham in London – was murdered in a racially motivated attack while waiting for a bus in 1993. When you mention his name, it brings to mind not only one of the highest profile racial killings in UK history; but also points at the cultural changes to attitudes on racism and the police within the UK. What is poignant in this case is how almost 20 years went past before two of the perpetrators were convicted in 2012. On the day he was murdered,

Stephen was 18-years-old. He would have turned 42 this year, had the gang of white youths at a bus stop not set upon himwhile on his way home with his friend, Duwayne Brooks.

“It’s not just in this country that his name is so recognised. Although he may be embarrassed, at the same time he would still think it was great”, Doreen told a London paper.

Not only did his death spark a nationally televised fight for justice; it later exposed the failings of the police and serves as a disturbing reminder that the fight against racism must persevere.

Just over 4 years ago, on 4 January 2012, Gary Dobson and David Norris were sentenced to a total of 29 years for his murder. It is believed the pair were part of a larger group of up to six attackers, who are yet to be convicted.

Stephen’s mother, Doreen, has tirelessly campaigned for justice since her eldest son’s death. “Even though he was an extrovert when he was alive, I think he would be somewhat shy to see how much his name permeates across the world.

An English Heritage-approved memorial, organised by the Nubian Jak Community Trust, was unveiled at the Stephen Lawrence Centre in 2013. The memorial is one of only three blue plaques of its kind dedicated to individuals who

The Museum, which is part of The University of Manchester, is set to open an inflatable version of itself to help cope with the growing demand for access to its exhibits. Manchester Museum said it was “oversubscribed” after receiving visits from 30,000 school children last year. The inflatable will bring the museum experience to school halls across the Greater Manchester region. Developed in partnership with stage designers and sound artists, the inflatable copy incorporates a performance area, exploratory activity spaces and high quality protection and audio equipment. Funded with the aid of The Zochonis Charitable Trust, the inflatable museum project is part of a University of Manchester strategy, in which they aim to widen the participation of school children. The strategy aims to connect young people from some of Greater Manchester’s most disadvantaged areas to the museum’s offerings. One aggrieved user responded by posting “So #BlackWomen’s hair is “unprofessional” & if you just bleach your skin & hair sufficiently, it’s “professional”? @BonKamona”. Others noted that many of the images that appeared in the results for “unprofessional hairstyles for work” linked to articles and blog posts entailing

Journalist Andrew Leung has stated “The argument that the images are being used in a positive light is beside the point: the very existence of these types of articles and social media posts illuminates how black women are discriminated against in the professional sector because of their hair”. black man from London has died after being a victim of what prominent blogger Lee Jasper describes as a “vicious racist attack and institutional racism”. The 23-year-old African British-born man, Tatenda Kamasho had previously been the victim of a vicious racist attack that took place in Northampton in 2012, when aged just 20. black teacher has highlighted the issue of racial disparity and inequality in Britain’s schools.

Andrew Byran taught at Elstree University Technical College between October 2014 and August 2015 and told human rights activist Lee Jasper about an incident in which a white, male teacher called a black student a “n*gger” in front of a class full students and a senior member of staff defended them by saying the word was regularly used by young, black people. Figures released by the Department of Education in 2015 showed that only 6.7% of Britain’s teaching force came from ethnic minority groups while only 2.4% of headteachers were people of colour. Byran also claims it became apparent during his tenure that Elstree UTC preferred to hire new white teachers than renew the contracts of existing black teachers. The National Union of Teachers wrote to every headteacher in England and Wales in 2015 urging them to ensure their teaching staff reflect the communities they serve. The percentage of students from ethnic minorities is around 25% in many schools with that figure rising to as high as 60% or 90% in London. At present, recruitment does not reflect that and the 2014 census revealed that around 93% of teachers were white while only 1% were classified as black Caribbean. Elstree UTC were unavailable for comment when contacted by The Nubian Times on 27 April.

We are fed a constant diet of war, terrorism, natural disasters and so on and so on forth. It almost feels like the powers that be want us to be frightened, angry and negative. However, whilst we focus on the negativity and the drama, we let life and opportunities pass us by. We can end up in a life we don’t want, in a career we despise and in relationships we loathe.

Taking advantage of opportunities is vital. Just one could really make a profound difference to our lives. Nevertheless, we allow fear and other people’s opinions hold us back. So how can we take advantage of opportunities? Maybe the following can help:

Pornography is also almost always derogatory to women, as it devalues and objectifies them. This feeds an unhealthy attitude towards women. Mark Kastlemann suggests “Giving porn to a teenage boy is like giving crack to a baby. Addiction is almost guaranteed”. Porn can deteriorate relationships, as developing a dependence means less time spent having real experiences with those around

What the cluck?

Yard & Coop TNT Billy Rooney

In July 1988, Canadian-born historian Barbara Taylor was admitted to Friern Hospital, a once-notorious asylum for the insane. Her journey there began when, overwhelmed by anxiety as she completed her doctoral studies in London, England, she found relief by dosing herself with alcohol and tranquillizers. She then embarked on what would turn out to be a decades- long psychoanalysis.

This brutally honest, thought-provoking and beautifully written memoir is the story of the author’s madness years, set inside the wider story of the death of the asylum system in the twentieth century. It is a meditation on her own experience of breakdown and healing, but also that of the millions of other people who have suffered, are suffering, will suffer mental illness.

With beautiful illustrations, Mufaro’s Beautiful Daughters Big Book, a Caldecott Honor picture book, is perfect for introducing children to the Cinderella fairytale as well as the history, culture, and geography of the African nation of Zimbabwe. The Trouble With Women does for girls what 1066 and All That did for boys: it reminds us of what we were taught about women in history lessons at school, which is to say, not a lot. A brilliantly witty book of cartoons, it reveals some of our greatest thinkers’ baffling theories about women. We learn that even Charles Darwin, long celebrated for his open, objective scientific mind, believed that women would never achieve anything important, because of their smaller brains.

King Lear is about tragedy and the chaos in aging or rather the mixture of both. Lear’s gradual descent into madness, after he disposes of his kingdom giving his inheritance to two of his three daughters based on their flattery of him, brings tragic consequences for all.

Both language and costumes remain true to the story’s era. Buffong also sets props – swords, engraved metal chalices and thrones – as Shakespeare would have originally had them. After their story was made into one of 2015’s hottest cinema releases, two of Ice Cube’s former N.W.A bandmates – MC Ren and DJ Yella – joined him onstage for blistering performances of ‘Straight Outta Compton’ and the controversial ‘F*ck The Police’. Dr Dre was nowhere to be seen, however. Later in the show, Ice Cube performed the track ‘Real People’ from his upcoming film ‘Barbershop: The Next Cut’ with rapper Common before welcoming his final guest, Snoop Dogg, who joined him in a rendition of ‘The Next Episode’ from Dre’s ‘2001’ album.

Idris Elba to play radical black activist

G

olden Globe winner and star of ‘Luther’ Idris Elba is set to return to our TV screens, this time as a radical black activist in new Sky drama ‘Guerrilla’. The new six-part series will see the 43-year-old Londonborn actor cohere with writer and director John Ridley, who won an Oscar for best-adapted screenplay for ’12 Years a Slave’. Elba will also be an executive producer on the show. The story follows a young couple whose relationship is put under pressure when they form a radical underground cell in 1970s London which aims to bring down the Black Power Desk, a real-life furtive counter-intelligence unit within Special Branch devoted to crushing all forms of black activism. After receiving the role, Elba revealed “It’s been a long time desire of mine to collaborate with Mr. Ridley and his work here is nothing short of a masterclass in character building and storytelling. TV is in for a treat”. Meanwhile, Ridley has spoken of the professionalism and skill associated with Elba: “I am both humbled by and impressed with Idris’ passion towards bringing this story to life. I share his commitment for populating the culture with driven and complicated people of colour”. Sky’s head of drama, Anne Mensah, said: “Rarely does a project pitch the personal and the political in such a flawless combination. Guerrilla presents characters you will fall in love with but also a world and a part of black British history that is rarely tackled in such a bold and compelling manner”. ‘Guerrilla’ will be screened on Sky Atlantic in 2017.

Just less than a week after his release from an emergency visit to hospital, the late American musician was found dead in a lift at his Paisley Park estate on Thursday 21 April, aged 57. The hugely popular star was cremated in the presence of three family members. Following the £1,110 cremation, at the First Memorial Western Chapel in Minneapolis, his sister

The music legend’s publicist Yvette Noel-Schure said: “Prince’s remains have been cremated and their final storage will remain private”. While the policy change prompted fury across the world, Badu maintains that it is the right thing to do. The singer songwriter, who trudged head first in to the argument, has been satirised for a Twitter rant that stretches out over eleven posts. The 45-year-old’s comments have provoked many into accusing her of victim blaming. Badu, who had a child with André 3000 in 1997, stated that teenage girls should wear knee length skirts as protection from the “natural” desires of men. The Dallas-born singer began by saying “There was an

article ruling that high school girls lower their skirts so male teachers are not distracted. I agreed”. She continued “It is not them who is doing anything wrong by being beautiful and attractive, but with such imbalance in our society it is smart to be aware and awake. But do I think it is unnatural for a heterosexual male 2b attracted to a young woman in a revealing skirt? No. I think it’s his nature. TNT Jonathan Thomas friend recently sent me a Government circular on the relaxation of restrictions on the recruitment of medical professionals from outside the European Union to help cope with the NHS staffing shortfalls. The evidence from our surgeries, clinics and hospitals indicates that a significant fraction of any new recruits will be from Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). According to March 2013 data from the UK General Medical Council, a large proportion of all UK doctors were trained in South Africa, Nigeria and Sudan. The factors behind this net in-flow include better pay and aggressive UK recruitment. Indeed, with the EU alone predicted to need 1 million extra health professionals by 2020 according to the European Commission, these demand pressures are not going to disappear. But the flipside of the UK’s gain is a huge cost to SSA nations in terms of lost healthcare resources that they have paid to train and develop which, in turn, underpins poorer health outcomes. So how should SSA governments respond? One avenue has been to insist that local staff serve a minimum period at home. But poor monitoring and follow-through has rendered such an approach largely ineffectual. A better, but harder, process would start by recognising that what is effectively a global demand/supply imbalance requires a global response. This means SSA nations acting in concert and, if possible, in partnership with other significant exporters of health workers, such as the Caribbean and the Philippines, to agitate forcefully for effective compensation for what is essentially a subsidy to Western nations. Such funds could be used to help build a better domestic healthcare system while encouraging Western nations to cover their own shortages internally. But can we work together?

Manchester Credit Union has opened its first city centre branch on Brazennose Street in Manchester, just opposite the Town Hall. The new flagship branch was opened with a special ceremony on International Credit Union day by Julie Hesmondhalgh, well known for her role as Hayley Cropper in the ITV soap opera Coronation Street between 1998 and 2014. Julie has been a long term supporter of credit unions and has often spoken in support of the vital work credit unions perform in communities in the North West.

For most businesses, the key determinant for success is growth. For FFOP – Focusing First On People – success has come by means of perseverance and building foundations from within the very community it serves – Moss Side. The training provider organisation, which will be celebrating 10 years this October since establishment, started as a referral agent before delivering preemployment programmes. “We place people into employment, then deliver workplace learning and training opportunities for local very small businesses that

don’t have any links to funding”, founder Abdi told TNT. Now in a position to deliver apprenticeships, the 16-man strong organisation is looking beyond Manchester, to spread the model of business that has provided employment opportunities for the many disadvantaged graduates in the city. “We are now in a position to branch out to other parts of the UK. Our initial priority was to build a solid organisation”, Abdi explained. With varying training programs like Customer Service and Security, FFOP is trying to create local quality trainers, some of whom are bilingual, to be educational trainers of level 3 and level 4 –

“and this will help those who want to be become teachers in the future. We are also training people on how to become NVQ assessors”. C r e a ting the workplace balance of delivering high quality success and recruiting locally is part of building a successful firm, but actions, not

just words, are required to bring this about over the next 10 years. CONTINUED ONLINE
