A letter from the Editor
I trust that you are well and looking forward to the next issue of the paper. It is therefore incumbent on me to introduce myself as the new Editor of The Nubian Times. Although a new member of an established team that has been serving the community exceedingly well for the last year, I embrace the opportunity that my appointment presents and trust that I may do TNT justice. A ‘Londoner’ living and working in Manchester since 2005, my career background is rooted in the fields of law and education. More relevant to my appointment at TNT is my experience as Editor of a weekly Caribbean newspaper – I hope to bring to the table the bold enlightenment derived therefrom.

Accordingly, my mission is to ensure that The Nubian Times achieves its aim to ‘edify’ on issues that are current and relevant to our lives yet enlightening and inspirational. I want to ensure that readers across the board are kept informed and appropriately entertained by what they read. More so now than ever before, TNT seeks to inspire its readers with thought-provoking articles that seek to instil a thirst for knowledge and a quest for truth….the reviews on October’s Black History Month issue have been encouraging, thus it is the intention of the TNT team to continue to serve you in that vein. Many of you will be aware that TNT recently celebrated its first anniversary with a Media, Business and Community Awards evening held at the Hilton Manchester Deansgate Hotel. What a glorious evening it was! Clearly enjoyed by all in attendance, it was a testament to both the capability and potential of the BME community and served to seal my resolve to do all possible to shape and support the future development of the paper. An abundance
of thanks goes out to all who attended and/or otherwise supported the event and its nominated charity - Prostrate Cancer UK. Our cherished menfolk are hereby encouraged to read and act on the advice given in this month’s issue! The success of the evening was only made possible with your appreciation and support for the strides that TNT has made and seeks to continue to make in the best interest of the communities it serves. This editorial would not be complete without a heartfelt ‘Thank You!’ to everyone - those who expect to will be hearing from TNT in due course. Finally, I trust that this issue will be enjoyed as was the last. It is a special issue in that, for the last time, the November and December issues of TNT are published as one ‘bumper’ publication. Once you’ve got your copy - and please be sure to do so - relax, read and enjoy! Albeit earlier than expected, I am both happy and humbled to be amongst the first to extend greetings to one and all for the upcoming holiday season. Please do not forget to keep ‘Christ’ in your Christmas and stay safe, happy and blessed.

bout 49,560 women are diagnosed with breast cancer in the UK each year and nearly 400 men are diagnosed. Breast cancer is now the most common cancer in the UK (excluding non-melanoma skin cancer) and by far the most common cancer in women. 1 in 8 women in the UK develop breast cancer during their lifetime. Most of the women who get breast cancer have experienced menopause, but about 2 out of every 10 (20%) are under 50 years old. Having a mother or sister diagnosed with breast cancer approximately doubles the risk of breast cancer. But more than 8 out of 10 women who have a close relative with breast cancer
will never develop it. Statistical surveys in America and England have shown that White women have a higher risk of breast cancer than women from other ethnic groups. This is at least partly due to lifestyle factors. A healthy diet may help to prevent breast cancer. Our breasts are not usually the same size as each other contrary to popular belief. They may also feel and look different at different times of the month, just before your period they can feel lumpy. The breasts are made up of fat, connective tissue and gland tissue divided into lobes. A network of ducts spreads from the lobes towards the nipple. An area of breast tissue leads into the armpit which has many
lymph glands, also known as lymph nodes, a yellow fluid that flows through the lymphatic system to help get rid of waste products from the body. Tissue fluid bathes the body's cells, drains into the lymphatic system and then circulates again. Lymph glands are important in cancer care because any cancer cells that have broken away from a tumour can be carried by the tissue fluid to the nearest lymph glands. So doctors always examine the lymph glands. If you have cancer, but no cancer cells in any of the nearby lymph glands, your cancer is less likely to have spread. Get to know

he Nubian Times interviewed Malorie Blackman at the 7th National Black & Asian Writers’ Conference in Manchester, where I was told by the event’s artistic director that she has no time for interviews with reporters. sheen on my face disappeared I thought, maybe I shouldn’t have said I’m a reporter! After her two-hour debate on Writing For Children: How to get ethnic diversity into publishing houses and children’s books to end the misrepresentation of Black people, I noted that Malorie was book-signing. Perhaps I should try her once more! Once again, attire check and ‘grin’ check. I eventually reached the top of the queue to be greeted by a smiling Blackman whose shiny pen is poised in her right hand… II “Hello Ms Blackman, it’s me again! On behalf of The Nubian Times, I would like to congratulate you on your laureateship.” “Aw, thank you very much.” “What advice would you give to Manchester’s aspiring Black writers struggling to get published?” “Practically, don’t give up but learn your craft. My daughter has had it easier than I did. I’m very optimistic. We move forward as a society. For every two steps forward, maybe we take one back, but the overall movement is forward. If you want change, you’ve got to stand up and do it. SHOCK NEW STATS FOR BLACK MEN One in four Black men in UK will get prostate cancer
A
shocking new figure released during Black History Month by the health charity, Prostate Cancer UK, reveals that one in every four Black men in the UK will be diagnosed with prostate cancer at some point in his lifetime*. That’s double the overall 1-in-8 cradle-to-grave risk faced by all men in the UK.
Cancer UK’s partnership with Britain’s African and African Caribbean communities. Calculation of the specific lifetime risk to Black men was undertaken by Prostate Cancer UK as part of its continuing drive to support the men of Britain’s two million strong African and African Caribbean population in recognising both the threat to
Why there are no Black leaders Dr. Julius Garvey currently admires
I
t was a difficult task getting five minutes alone with Dr Julius Garvey, MD. But that’s to be expected when the son of one of Black history’s most iconic leaders - Jamaican nationalist and activist Marcus Garveycomes to town for the first time in decades. Understandably running late, the doctor eventually gave an inspiring talk to a 200 strong crowd at the Caribbean Social Club on Westwood Street, Moss Side. Listening to him, it became clear that whilst he was happy, even proud, to speak of his father’s great work, he was not his father. “His impact on the world hasn’t really influenced my career and life choices except maybe indirectly”, he said. “I’m a surgeon so I help other human beings, and, of course, he helped other human beings so there’s that similarity, but I’m not political so there’s that difference.
“There’s a lot of ‘being like my father’ expectations put on me by people expecting you to be something that you aren’t and trying to make you into something that you aren’t and then being upset and disappointed when you’ve not fulfilled their expectations but I’m not here to fulfill anybody’s expectations.” When asked who he admires, Dr Garvey reeled off a whole host of Black men who are now deceased but, “as for people that are alive…I’m sad to say there is currently no one that I look up to or admire as a person doing positive things for Black people. It’s sad but it’s true”, he added. One thing Dr Garvey is passionate about is education and what it means and can do for Black people. After briefly updating Dr Garvey on the statistics and stereotypes our
their prostate health and their responsibility to be proactive in seeking out advice and support. Cordwell Thomas continued: “Many health professionals are not even aware that Black ancestry is a prostate cancer risk factor. What’s more, Black guys often don’t claim their rights to health care. They’re not first in line to see the GP or to call our helpline to discuss concerns like erectile dysfunction or problems peeing. With so many lives at risk, we all have to work together to ensure that Black men wise up to the issue and those affected seek and receive appropriate healthcare.” Prostate Cancer UK provides support to thousands of men facing prostate cancer and is bringing together the community leaders and clinicians who can
S
peaking recently at a national conference, the theme of which asked the question if whether, twenty years after the murder of Stephen Lawrence, the Police can reform itself, my basic analysis went something like this: ‘It never has and never will’. This is not to say that the police service is incapable of reform, but having spent the past 23 years in the service, I know all too well the ‘nature of the beast’, so to speak. The wider public were recently offered a great insight into policing with the so-called ‘Plebgate’ incident where it appears that not only was a Government Minister stitched up by cops at the gates of parliament but subsequently the details of a private meeting he held with three Police Federation representatives appears to have been deliberately
reported inaccurately in order to discredit the Minister. Luckily, the Minister tape-recorded the meeting and so was able to expose the apparent corrupt officers who, in turn, were subject to a misconduct investigation by three Police Chiefs. Extraordinarily but perhaps not surprisingly, the officers were effectively given a clean bill of health. No, you could not make this up if you tried! This turn of events raises serious questions about the level of trust and confidence that our communities have in the police service. If a high profile Government Minister with all the access to power and resources he has at his disposal can be ‘fitted up’, what hope do the rest of us have for justice not to mention equality? This is a particularly serious matter for Black peo-

ple who find themselves in the criminal justice process. Ministry of Justice statistics clearly show that Black people have very different experiences compared to others who come in contact with the police and the wider criminal justice process itself. How can we be certain that we are responding appropriately to problems of criminality within our communities if we feel that justice is not being done? Just how much corruption is there in our police service? I do not say this to discourage anyone from a career in the Police service, quite the opposite. However, based on my own personal experiences and observation, I believe that the problem might perhaps extend to more than just a few bad apples!
young Black males are faced with in the education system, he pointed the finger at the family and community, saying: “I’m not sure the youngsters can do it by themselves, they need the support of the community and their parents. It is also a fault of the society which has destroyed the Black family to a large degree; it’s also the fault of the community - if you will, the Black community - as well as the general community.” So does he think it possible that we will get there? “There’s no reason why it isn’t possible, other communities have proper schools and accomplishments in terms of their youngsters so there is nothing different about Black folk except for the circumstances that we’re in as a people- that’s why we’re not having that same sort of achievement. Very often some are regarded as aggressive or disruptive by our own community and we have to correct that and get to the nuts and bolts of it and do it, we can’t be just waiting for someone else to do it for us.” His parting words for The Nubian Times? “This paper is just what is needed to remind our community of the positive things we are achieving; keep up the great work!”

MARK DUGGAN: INQUEST OR SPIN-QUEST?
T
he shooting of Mark Duggan by armed police in Tottenham, North London, in 2011 provoked days of rioting and anger towards the police. But as the government and police were quick to vilify those who took to the streets, reaction to the inquest surrounding the death of Mark Duggan is testament to a general feeling of mistrust towards the practices and general lack of accountability of the police, particularly in relation to the BME community. This inquest is of particular interest, not least of all because it follows closely on the heels of the 2012 inquest into the death of 40-year old Sean Rigg whose unnecessary and untimely death in Brixton Police Station, South London, in August 2008, leaves his family still campaigning for justice. The Mark Duggan inquest is also of interest in light of recent high-profile cases which have uncovered clearly indisputable evidence of police cover-ups and/or other wrong-doings. These include the police investigation into the 1989 Hillsborough football tragedy and the circumstances
surrounding the investigation and subsequent trials of those accused of the murder of 18-year old Stephen Lawrence in 1993. The stated purpose of the Mark Duggan Inquest is to achieve the following objectives: • That the full facts surrounding his death are brought to light; • That any culpable and discreditable conduct is exposed and brought to public notice; • Suspicion of deliberate wrongdoing, if unjustified, is allayed; • Dangerous practices and procedures, if discovered, are rectified; • That Mr Duggan’s relatives and loved ones may at least have the satisfaction of knowing that
lessons learned from his death may save the life of others. Notwithstanding the above, there is an undeniable feeling amongst the community that this inquest is doomed to fail in the achievement of its aims not least of all because of a fundamental and generally not unfounded distrust of the police. Many do not believe that all relevant facts in the Duggan case have been disclosed. Nor is it believed that the full extent of culpable or discreditable conduct on the part of the police has been revealed, or that suspicion of deliberate wrongdoing will be allayed or that, perhaps, this case will prevent future untimely loss of life to be borne by other devastated families. If the police are innocent victims of unjust distrust then the institution itself as well as the conduct, acts and omissions of its members must become fully transparent in order that the police might gain the trust of those that they are supposed to serve and protect. How can we ever be sure that we really know the truth and nothing but the truth? The inquest continues….

Human Trafficking: News from the Ministry of Justice F riday 18 October was Anti-Slavery Day. To mark it, the Ministry of Justice published new leaflets to help victims understand what trafficking is and how to get help if they, or anyone they know, is being trafficked. Trafficking takes the form of sexual exploitation, forced labour, domestic servitude and many other types of slavery. The Ministry of Justice provided £3million last year to support victims of human trafficking. Victims’ Minister Damian Green said: “The trafficking of vulnerable men and women is something that no civilised country should tolerate. On Anti-Slavery Day I am proud that this Government is standing strong against those who profit from human misery and last year gave £3 million to support to those who have suffered at their hands. "New leaflets will provide a lifeline for victims, telling them in their own language how to
get help and escape from their enslavement. For the first time they are available in Yoruba and Luganda." The Victims’ Minister recently met with some women who had been trafficked but are now receiving support from the Salvation Army thanks to Ministry of Justice funding. Here are their stories: Alice, 20 from Nigeria While Alice and her mother were selling bean cakes they were befriended by a man who used to regularly buy their goods. Over the course of more than a year, he began to explain to Alice that she was too beautiful to be selling goods by the side of the
road and that he could arrange for her to get a good job in Europe as something like a waitress, a nanny or a fruit picker. By this stage he was well acquainted with the family to the point of being considered a friend and someone they could trust so they agreed to pursue this option. Alice gave him a photo for her passport and travel documents and was surprised when the passport came back with a different name and date of birth. Her trafficker explained that that was simply to overcome the fact that she was too young to work abroad (she was 20 at the time). Her mother was concerned about paying back the travel costs which her trafficker had explained would be around 40,000 euros. However the trafficker persuaded them that Alice’s wages as a waitress would soon pay this off. To read more, please continue online. www.thenubiantimes.com

eachers and parents don’t always agree. By the time this goes to press, I can happily say that I will have gone on strike on October 17th over changes to pay and pensions. This act and those of my nationwide colleagues will cost families millions and you as parents stress over finding childcare. Parents across the country will feel that teachers should not be striking and it should not have got to this stage. I guess sometimes teachers and parents do agree! I don’t want to strike. I lose my pay for that day! But Michael’s Gove’s initiatives are too much. The salient change is to performance related pay. Teachers now will have to prove that they have met their targets for the year to increase up the pay spine. Gove argues that
teachers should let their results prove their value as a teacher, but his short-sightedness unfortunately will disadvantage the children more than ever. There is an American book called Freakonomics by Dubner and Levitt which highlights that performance related pay in America doesn’t lead to better

yber bullying is an important issue that does not seem to be getting the attention it needs. With the growing popularity of social media networks such as Twitter and Facebook teenagers, like myself, are becoming more vulnerable to hurtful messages. Now with the current rise of websites called Tumblr and
ASK.fm, the idea of ‘anonymous’ settings being available to use when sending messages has been misused. Hidden behind a computer screen, unnamed people continuously send an onslaught of degrading emails to others who fall victim. In comparison to physical bullying, cyber bullying affects people mentally rather than physically and particularly at an age when they are very easily influenced, this can be just as bad for youths. A number of research studies have been carried out this year into the number of teens being bullied online. The majority of figures show that 60-69% of youths who have access to social media sites have experienced it. Even more horrific is the knowledge that cyber bullying has led individuals to
education but it leads teachers to cheat! When the livelihood of teachers (who are people as well) is at stake, cheating becomes an unfortunate necessity. In addition to this, in performance related pay studies in America, nearly half of all new teachers burn out and/or quit in the first 5 years of teaching. The Health & Safety Executive (HSE) concluded that teaching was the most stressful profession in the year 2000 with 42% of teachers stating that they are highly stressed. I trust that parents will agree that the focus of teachers should not be solely dedicated to the meeting of targets set at the beginning of the school year but, rather, should be focused on the holistic development of MR. L the child. commit suicide; amongst their number are Amanda Todd and Hannah Smith both of whom died before their sixteenth birthday. Cyber bullying has become an unwanted leech on our society and will only become more dangerous as time goes on. A 15 year old girl who was asked why cyber bullying is becoming increasingly common said: “It’s because they (the bullies) think they won’t get into trouble. People send hurtful stuff on anon so...” It seems clear that being anonymous is what is attracting so many people to become online tormenters as it ‘blankets’ their identities. By removing the setting as well as increasing awareness of cyber-bullying, the number of victims would decrease dramatically. The idea that abuse on social networking sites isn't serious is untrue and it needs to change….sooner rather than later!
25 December? - Fr. John Ramzy
T
he first Church did not celebrate the birth of Christ. And the actual date of his birth was and still is unknown. The earliest known indication of such a celebration comes in a passing statement by St. Clement of Alexandria who mentions that the Egyptians of his time celebrated the Lord's birth on May 20. At the end of the 3rd century, the Western Churches celebrated it in the winter, and this was only accepted in Rome in the middle of the 4th century. Around that time it was agreed by the Church all over the world to celebrate the nativity of our Lord Jesus Christ on 25 December (29 Kiahk in the Coptic calendar), most probably to take the place of a pagan feast that even Christians continued to celebrate until then. At that time, and until the sixteenth century, the civil calendar in use the world over was the Julian calendar, introduced by Julius Caesar in the year 46 B.C. This calendar considered the year to be 365.25 days and thus had a leap year every four years, just like the Coptic calendar. Therefore, until the sixteenth century, 25 December coincided with 29 Kiahk, as the date of the celebration of the Lord's nativity. Towards the end of the sixteenth century, Pope Gregory XIII of Rome took interest in studying astrology, dates and feasts. He noticed that the vernal equinox, the point at which the sun crosses the equator, making day and night of equal length and starting the spring, used to fall on 21 March (25 Baramhat) around the time of the council of Nicea (A.D. 325) which set the times for the ecclesiastical feasts. The vernal equinox at his time however fell on 11 March. After consultation with scientists, Pope Gregory learned that the equinoctial year (or solar year), which is the time the earth takes to revolve around the sun from equinox to equinox, was slightly shorter than the Julian year [and so] decreed that in A.D. 1582, October 5th will be called October 15th and that the Julian calendar should be shortened by 3 days every 400 years... his month I step down from my post as President of the National Black Police Association (NBPA) a position I was elected to back in 2009 and then re-elected in 2011 thereby serving two terms of office. Our mission in a nutshell is to improve the working environment for Black staff and to improve policing in our communities. NBPA is made up of about 46 local associations across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. My job involved leading a Cabinet of executive officers who run the day-to-day business of NBPA and to Chair a National Executive Committee of 40 plus representatives from around the country. The reason I give this outline is that, as I was reflecting on leaving my post, I asked myself if I had in fact learned anything about Leadership. Specifically, what have I learned that can be of value to my community? I thought about the great Steve Biko, founder of the Black Consciousness Movement in South Africa who died at the hands of the Police 30 years ago and who said: “The greatest weapon in the hand of the oppressor is the mind of the oppressed”. I have sat in meetings with the most senior Police Officers in this country and debated with many of them. I have seen senior politicians at close hand and met with ministers. I have concluded that one of our greatest assets is the ability to think and act for ourselves. I learned that 'the powerful' tend to act in their own ideological or strategic interest and that our hopes and aspirations do not necessarily factor in this equation. I learned that, for the reasons Biko pointed out, our victories and the great work of true leaders in the community will not be reported on the six o'clock news. To answer the question more directly, the most valuable thing I learned is the importance of integrity, staying true to oneself and staying the course as the struggle continues!

TALKING POINT with Lee Jasper
W
e have become media celebrity obsessed whilst lacking in, empathy and compassion for each other. Such is the level of alienation that family members communicate with each other via texts on their mobile phones! My point is that some of us living in Europe, Britain more specifically, have become like spoilt children in a sweet shop. Today we cannot even organise a single movement representing Africans in Britain - such is the level of our knowledge and commitment to the future of our children - much less organise a global mass movement. In his time, the Honourable Marcus Garvey born on 17th August 1887 in St Anns Bay, Jamaica, became an internationally renowned ‘African’ champion of global significance. Those were extraordinarily hard times for Africans wherever they were in the world. White supremacy was rampant and Africans were unashamedly seen by many as sub-human and, hence, existed with neither recognition nor rights. Garvey’s rise to prominence in such a deeply hostile environment remains an inspira-
tion to millions of people. His goal was to encourage Africans ‘at home and abroad’ in the diaspora to focus their attention on self-reliance and working together with the sole aim of the redemption of, and repatriation of Africans back to, Africa. It was his espousal of the idea of ‘repatriation’ as opposed to ‘integration’ that separated Garvey from all other champions of civil rights movements. Garvey travelled the world organising Africans faced with the brutal ‘unreconstructed’ racist segregation of the ‘Jim Crow’ era when most of Africa was bound by the chains of colonialism. In 1917 the first of over 700 branches of Garvey’s Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA) was established. It represented the largest mass movement in African American history – its Black national ‘Back to Africa’ message clearly facilitated by Garvey’s incorporation in 1919 of his shipping company, Black Star Line. His philosophy and organisational ability had an appealing religious base which Garvey combined with the political and economic factors necessary for the survival of the organisation and, by extension, all Africans. Accordingly, count-
less individuals, communities and organisations such as the Universal Black Cross Nurses, the Black Eagle Flying Corps, and the Universal African Legion, responded to Garvey’s call. I had the good fortune to meet with Dr. Julius Garvey, son of Marcus, on his recent trip to the UK. A leading neurosurgeon in New York, the highly impressive doctor made his position on the principles of ‘Garveyism’ clear when he said that they needed to be ‘revisited’ in order to produce a new 21st century vision of Pan Africanism in general and Garveyism in particular. Today, as the rich get richer, the poor get poorer and racism continues to be an integral part of society, covertly or otherwise, the future of our children may perhaps depend on a ‘new’ vision of Garveyism - one that can provide leadership and inspiration for our young people. Marcus Garvey initiated, organised and led the way forward in the early 20th century yet today there is no rival for his level of leadership. We have the means, we have the technology and, believe it or not, there is money….all we lack is the political and moral will to sacrifice whatever it takes to secure the future for all our children

PROSTATE CANCER with Darcus Howe
"The news came as a complete shock. I was feeling great ... I didn’t have any symptoms." Darcus Howe
D
arcus Howe, the racial equality campaigner, is raising awareness of prostate cancer which affects Black men three times more than White men. Howe is best known as the 'Devil's Advocate', the name of the current affairs television programme he presented in the mid-eighties. He was spurred on in his awareness efforts by his own battle with the disease. “There’s ignorance of prostate cancer among Black men,” he says. “Lives could be saved if they were more aware of this silent killer and got themselves tested.” Howe, who is 67 and lives in South London, was diagnosed with an aggressive form of prostate cancer in April 2007. He had been receiving treatment for Type 2 diabetes, which he developed five years earlier, when routine tests showed the presence of protein in his urine. He then had a blood test that revealed high levels of prostate specific antigen (PSA). This is a protein that healthy prostates produce in small amounts. The results of his blood test suggested that Howe could have prostate cancer. Howe, remembers vividly the day the consultant told him he probably had cancer. “Beads of perspiration dripped from my face,” he says. “My entire body shook uncontrollably. Cancer to me meant death. “I thought of my children and grandchildren. I felt guilty that I had given them so much worry.” Until then, Howe had little knowledge of the condition. He didn’t realise at the time that prostate cancer may have killed both his father and his grandfather. “I had heard of the prostate,” he says. “I knew it was a type of gland, but I didn’t know what it was or what it did. “The news came as a complete shock. I was feeling great at the time. I was eating healthily. I exercised. I had played cricket all my life. I didn’t have any symptoms.” Howe’s cancer was aggressive. The malignant cells had appeared at the edge of his prostate and, if left untreated, would have entered his bones and eventually kill him. He had his prostate gland removed in June 2007 and, after a course of radiotherapy and hormone injections, he has been given the all clear.

his month I want to combine two elements, eating and exercise, to really target that dreaded midrift bulge….you know, the bit your jeans just love to hug a little too much! Ok, first things first…. exercise. Now, as it’s coming up to (can I say it yet?) Christmas, I’m going to keep it as cheap as chips – and that’s the last chips you’ll be having by the way. I’m going to suggest a 4-week home workout but you can easily do this in a gym or the park. I love home workouts because you can do them at any time of the day or night. And you can
even get your kids to encourage you by giving them a whistle….just see how motivating the little lovelies can be! Now this workout is supposed to be challenging; you may half the reps for the first week but by week 2 you should attempt full sets. Aim for a minimum of 3 workouts a week. 60 Push ups 60 Burpees 60 Jumping Jacks 60 Supermans (lie on the floor facing downwards with arms outstretched; raise arms and chest plus opposite leg off the ground hold, relax and repeat with opposite arm and leg) 60 Crunches
1 mile run/jog/walk – this is very important for fat loss especially around the stomach. This workout is specifically designed to strengthen the core muscles and reduce fat over all. used in products to help dry up nasal secretions, though this can cause drowsiness in some people. Nasal decongestants in the form of sprays can help clear a blocked nose. However, these should not be used for more than 7 days as this leads to rebound congestion which means the symptoms just reappear. An inhalant or vapour rub may also help, especially for blocked noses or sinuses. Common ingredients include menthol, eucalyptus, peppermint oil and camphor. There are two main types of cough; a chesty cough and a dry cough with both being treated differently. If you suffer from a chesty cough, you will have the feeling of trying to bring something up off the chest usually called phlegm or mucus. It is important to check whether any mucus brought up is green, yellow or brown in colour as this indicates a bacterial infection and thus may need antibiotics. Cough medicines designed for chesty coughs are used to loosen the mucous and make it easier to expel. A dry cough

often starts with a tickle in the back of the throat with nothing being brought up off the chest. Dry coughs can be very irritating, especially at night and can make sleeping very difficult. Cough suppressants such as pholcodeine help by subduing the natural coughing reflex, but remember to speak to your local pharmacy team for more information. Sore throats often mark the start of a cold or ‘flu’ and have symptoms which can include difficulty swallowing, hoarseness, tenderness around the jaw, or redness and swelling of the back of the throat. Lozenges can help to relieve sore throats as the sucking action causes the production of saliva which lubricates the throat. Some contain anaesthetics which numb the area, but once again ask your local pharmacy team for more details before going to see the doctor. Gargling with salt water can also be a good way to relieve a sore throat. To do so, add a teaspoon of salt to a glass of warm water, but remember

Ask your Pharmacist: Winter Remedies
s we are now in the Winter season, I have decided to concentrate on remedies to help combat coughs and colds. The first symptoms of a cold usually begin two or three days after infection and can include a runny or stuffy nose, sneezing, sore throat, cough, sinus congestion, mild muscular aches, tiredness and headache. Symptoms can last from 2 to 14 days, but most people recover within a week. It is normal for children to average around 3 to 8 colds a year, with adults averaging around 2 to 4. There is no cure for the common cold because it is caused by a viral infection which means that antibiotics do not work. There are however many products available that can help relieve the symptoms. Aches, pains and fever can be relieved with painkillers such as Ibuprofen and Paracetamol or, in combination, cold and flu remedies which contain decongestants such as pseudoephedrine or phenylephrine. An antihistamine such as diphenhydramine is sometimes

not to swallow it!! There are a number of herbal remedies and vitamins that can be taken to build up the immune system. They do not work for everybody and evidence of their effectiveness is still being determined, however they are very popular. Vitamin C and Zinc can be taken on their own or as part of a multivitamin and are said to help strengthen the immune system. Echinacea is another herbal remedy that is used to help support the immune system to fight viruses, and can be found in tablet form from most pharmacies. In addition, inhaling steam will help to loosen and bring up mucus, and can also help clear the sinuses. If you would like any more information, speak to your local pharmacy team or e-mail me at A.titiloye@thenubiantimes.com and I will answer any questions you may have. Finally, remember to help stop the spread of viruses by using tissues which should be discarded appropriately and by washing your hands regularly. N TT ADEDAYO TITILOYE MPharm
1 10-14lb turkey 2 tbsp pimento or pepper corns 3 sprigs, spring onion chopped 1 scotch bonnet pepper cut in half 4 bay leaves Extra wide turkey foil 1 orange studded with cloves 2 lemons, cut in half 2 pt buttermilk plus water to cover bird 2 onions, coarsley chopped 4 sprigs thyme 6oz butter, salt and pepper 6oz streaky bacon (optional)
Wash and clean the turkey with lime/lemon. Prepare by placing the turkey in a plastic bucket with all the ingredients (except butter, salt and pepper). Pour the buttermilk and water over the bird until completely covered. Cover and leave overnight. This helps to tenderise and season the bird. Remove the bird from the plastic bucket, drain and dry thoroughly on kitchen paper. Rub the turkey with the butter, salt and pepper. Place it on a double sheet of foil. Put the stuffing in the neck and secure with cocktail stick at the back. At the cavity end of the bird, place the studded orange. Tie the legs together and place the (optional)streaky bacon on the breast of the bird. Cover loosely with foil and seal by crimping the edges with your fingers. Cook for 30 minutes on mark 7 (220C) for about 40 minutes. Reduce heat and cook for a further 3 - 4 hours on mark 3 (170C). Base the bird frequently during cooking with the juices. At the end of the cooking time, test by piercing the thickest part of the leg with a skewer. If cooked the juices should be clear and golden. Remove the foil and return the bird to the oven to get golden and crispy. Serve with stuffing balls, roast potatoes, parsnips and pigs in blanket. Enjoy this lovely Christmas Day lunch!
Recipe: Christmas Pudding Ingredients:
Directions:
4oz (110g) self-raising flour 4oz (110g) white breadcrumbs 6oz (175g) sultanas 1oz (25g) mixed peel, chopped ½ tsp grated nutmeg ½ tsp mixed spice ½ tsp cinnamon 6oz (175g) dark soft brown sugar 1 cooking apple, peeled, cored & chopped 6oz (175g) suet, shredded grated zest juice of 1 lemon & orange 6oz (175g) currants 1oz (25g) almonds, chopped 2 beaten eggs 4tbs cider or ale 5tbs rum 6oz (175g) raisins Piece of string
Grease either one large pudding basin (2-pint size) or use two small pudding basins (1-pint size) In a large mixing bowl mix the suet, flour, breadcrumbs, salt, sugar and spices. Add all the dried fruits and mix thoroughly. In a separate bowl mix all the wet ingredients together and pour into the mixing bowl. The mixture should fall off the spoon but if not, add a bit more cider or rum and leave for about 3 to 4 hours. Put the mixture into the basin and cover with a double sheet of greaseproof paper and foil and secure. Tie a piece of string across the top of the basin to make a handle. Place the pudding in a steamer over a saucepan of hot water and simmer gently for 7 to 8 hours. Keep an eye on the water and top up the saucepan from time to time with boiling water. When the pudding is ready, carefully remove it from the saucepan using the string handle and leave it to go cold. Wrap the pudding in a fresh piece of greaseproof paper and foil and store in a cool place away from direct sunlight. A larder would be perfect. Before you serve the pudding: re-boil for approximately 3 hours then turn onto a warm dish. To ignite the pudding: warm 3 - 4 tablespoons of brandy and pour over the pudding thencarefully set alight. Serve with brandy butter or rum sauce. Enjoy! N Beverley Ogle-Young TT

“When we love Black women, we love ourselves, and the god who made us….” There are so many self help books for women that explain where we are going wrong and what we should be doing but our strengths as Black women are often ignored. This deeply powerful book looks at the many Black women the author, Michael Dyson, has encountered throughout his life and how they have contributed to the man he is today. A total celebration of Black women, this book is one which fills us with pride and reassurance that our hard work and sacrifices are not going unnoticed. Through interviews with the Black women who have been part of his life he chronicles his own life, whilst also giving well overdue praise for the strength and beauty in all Black women. All of us as women need to feel appreciated and this book certainly insists that we do. Let us celebrate the sophistication that is the Black woman.

Is Marriage for White People
Letters to a Young Brother
With the number of unmarried Black women rising, this book serves as an explanation for some of the reasons why we, as Black professional women, seem to be “left on the shelf ”. Statistics show that Black women are 3 times more likely not to not than their White counterparts. In no way does this book put down White women. Rather, it is more of a self-help book to the realisation that, although we love the Black man, there are reasons why we should perhaps consider men of other races. This book focuses on the middle class Black woman and seeks to answer questions as to why we should look at interrarcial relationships which, as the author says would, “shifts the power balance”. Although interracial relationships are not favoured by all, this book is an intelligent and interesting read which provides alternatives that we may never have thought of.
We all hear news reports of the Black men who have ended up with less choices in life turning to a life of crime. With its down-toearth style, this book will inspire that young Black man in your life to take charge of his own destiny. With Hill Harper, an actor who has starred in many television roles, being a good role model for Black men, he as author explains just why every young Black man should have a positive role model in their life. This book is an encouraging read; one which opens our eyes to the message that education is key and that, by instilling a strong belief that all things are achievable, with support our young men can take charge of their own lives and not just be another statistic in a very material world.

want to talk about blood vessels! Strange thing to talk about I might hear you say, but these structures are vitally important to our life and I think we need to start respecting them. Most of us do not know what they look like; we may have seen them in meat or chicken but do not know what the dynamic, living vessels in our bodies look like. So why are they important? Well imagine for a moment how cities such as London or Manchester would function if there were no roads leading into or out of them. Our blood vessels, arteries and veins are just that - they are the route that our blood takes to and from our vital organs such as our heart and brain. So if you think about it for a moment you will appreciate that they need to enable the free flow of blood, nutrients, hormones, infection fighting blood cells, oxygen and the myriad of other things that our body and its organs need to function well. Think of these blood vessels like tubes or pipes or even roads; imagine what happens with a blocked pipe, drain or a pile-up on the motorway. This is what can happen if we do not look after our blood vessels. In the human body, the burst pipe or “pile-up” can manifest itself as a heart attack or stroke either because the blood vessel becomes blocked or because there is a rupture in the wall of the blood vessel. This can have catastrophic effect and is clearly to be avoided where possible. The whole ‘transportation’ system is called the cardiovascular system but is more commonly referred to as the ‘circulatory system’ or simply ‘circulation’. In this article I suggest three general yet simple pieces of advice on how to keep your circulation healthy and thereby respect your blood vessels. Firstly reduce the amount of fried or fatty food you eat by either eating small quantities of them or by eating them less frequently. Junk food is called ‘junk food’ for a reason! You would not throw a pot full of cooking fat down your kitchen sink? I am sure you would not but, essentially, that is what we do when we continually eat the fried or fatty foods ever-present in takeaways and ready meals. It is what we do when we eat lots of cakes, biscuits, sweets and deserts; over time, these pipes get blocked, or sometimes burst, causing the catastrophic events mentioned above. ina Yashere is a British comedienne who has been living in LA for the last six years. She regularly travels back to England, her latest trip being for her tour show ‘Gina Yashere: Live!’ TNT's Siobhan White speaks to the former engineer about her seventeen years in the business. Hi Gina, welcome home! How does it feel to be back? Coming back to London is like taking your b r a o f f after a long
day. It feels good not to have to slow down my speech or repeat everything I say… And to be able to talk about the usual British things, you know, diesel versus petrol and the like. Why did you move to America? Sunshine and Palm trees basically. I just love them. Have the Americans taken to your style of comedy? Oh yeah I’m doing really well. I’ve been on loads of showsLeno, Def Jam… The only thing is they don’t really get sarcasm but otherwise it’s great I really love it. Your last tour, Skinny B***h, was pretty self explanatoryyou spoke a lot about your weight loss. What can we expect from the slightly more enigmatic Gina Yashere: Live? This tour is simply a round up of what’s been going on in the UK the last couple of years; Jimmy Saville, the riots, the Olympics and some bits about myself and how I’m changing and
getting older. Did you choose to do this UK tour during Black History Month on purpose? No, not really. I mean I’m Black all the time so Black History Month isn’t a massive deal to me. I think it’s a great way for the kids to learn about their heritage though. What’s the plan after this tour? I’ve got a lot of shows coming up all over the world, New York, Hong Kong, Malaysia… Then I’ll be spending Christmas in the UK with my family like I do every year. What advice would you give to someone hoping to become a comedian? I’d say work hard, don’t give up and keep your options open. There’s a difference between being an entertainer and a comedian, decide what you want more and know that stand-up isn’t your only op-

his recently released American historical drama is loosely based on the true story of Eugene Allen, who served as a White House butler to eight US presidents over a period of three decades from the Reagan Administration of the 1980’s up until the election of the incumbent president, Barack Obama, in 2008. Written by Danny Strong and directed by Lee Daniel the film, as per the authoritative movie source, IMDb, “traces the dramatic changes that swept American society during the time, from the civil rights movement to Vietnam and beyond, and how those changes affected the Butler and his family” and determine whether he should take action in his own way. Definitely a must-see film! Officially entitled, ‘Lee Daniel’s, The Butler’, the film boasts a tremendous cast headed by the inimitable Forest Whitaker, who plays the protagonist butler, Cecil Gaines, with Oprah Winfrey as his wife, Gloria. It seems set to become
tion. And never, ever steal another person’s jokes. How do you keep your jokes fresh? Where do you get your ideas from? Life. Life is my inspiration; you see and hear things every single day. Most situations you can look at from a funny point of view, no matter how depressing or serious they may seem. Have you ever told a bad joke? No joke is ever bad; it just depends on your audience. If you tell it and it isn’t well received you tweak it until it works. Gina brought her show to the Contact Theatre last month.
a box office hit even before one even appreciates the fact that veterans such as Vanessa Redgrave, Jane Fonda, Robin Williams, Cuba Gooding Jnr and John Cusack also star alongside David Oyelowo, Terrence Howard, James Marsden, Liev Schreiber, Alan Rickman, Mariah Carey and Lenny Kravitz . Lee Daniels, himself an actor, film producer and director of the memorable ‘Monster's Ball’ and ‘Precious’ movies, has aptly cast some of Hollywood’s finest in roles that seem to fit them like a glove and which could not have been dramatized any more convincingly had they been portraying their own lives. Instantly, ‘The Butler’ takes its viewers on a poignant journey by way of an array of some of the moving historically epic events that have occurred throughout American history. This immediately evokes powerful emotions such as empathy, pity, anger, loathing, love, inspiration, motivation, pride and yes, patriotism; emotions, some of which undoubtedly course through one’s veins during the film irrespective of the race, colour, creed or politics of the viewer. *****Stars

espite all the recent chit-chat about tilting the global economic axis towards the East, not to mention George Osbourne and Boris Johnson's recent attempts to pass the hat around various Chinese ministries, the numbers consistently remind us that the US remains the biggest and most muscular hound in the pack. After all, it still accounts for 20% of total world output and US dollar is the only truly global currency. Moreover, the US helpfully spends much more than it earns and finances the gap by selling government bonds, essentially an IOU with interest, to the rest of the world. Because of its size, strength and perceived financial safety, around half of its bonds are held by foreign governments (including our own), banks and asset managers who have relied on the guaranteed interest payments to keep their own finances on track. In particular, almost anyone in the world who is, or expects to be, reliant on a pension should care about the US repaying its debts. But these payments are increasingly threatened by US partisan politics. The most recent jitters revolved around the “debt ceiling”. This is a statutory requirement that the US government does not pile more debt upon the nation’s credit card beyond a specified limit (in this case around $17 trillion) without legislative approval. The idea of preventing the White House from going on an unlimited spending spree and leaving the debt for future generations is entirely sensible. But in recent years its passage has become a channel for extracting concessions on a wide range of other matters. This time around, the stumbling block is Republican opposition to Obama’s 2010 Affordable Care Act which aims to boost access to health care for the US poor. ADNAN JANUZAJ: MANCHESTER UNITED AND ENGLAND’S FIRST MUSLIM SUPERSTAR?
M
pre-season did not yield promising results but the performance of Januzaj did. ‘Adnan’ to Fergie – he has had his fair share of involvement, culminating in a brace to drag United back from a goal down and progress towards the business end of the league table. Anxious that the youngster does not slip through their fingers, fans are keen for Moyes and executive vice-chairman, Ed Woodward, to tie him down to a long-term contract as other clubs start circling with enticing inducements. And it’s not just clubs vying for his affections either…..the youngster is eligible to play for Belgium, Albania, Turkey and Serbia! England boss, Roy Hodgson, has already talked of his admiration for the youngster and a desire, if possible, to have him turning out for England – that would make Januzaj the first ever Muslim to play for the national team.
anchester United have had a rocky start to the current Premiership campaign. Yet, as the club continues to move from the Alex Ferguson era to the new David Moyes administration, the Reds’ latest starlet is fast becoming the talk of the football world. Step forward Belgianborn Adnan Januzaj. Born in Brussels and of KosovarAlbanian descent, Januzaj, 18, is the first Muslim to ply his trade for the historic club. His fearless, effortless style on the pitch saw him glide through the ranks from the youth team to the u21’s. In fact, he became the last ever Fergie-fledgling when he was named as an unused substitute in the United squad that played out an epic 5-5 draw against West Brom at the Hawthorns at the back end of last season. An omen for the opening months of the season, United’s
THE ONE TO WATCH
F
allowfield teenager Shauna Miller began playing football at a time when girls in the beautiful game were finally making an impact. But there weren’t many who at the age of 15 had to cope with a debilitating illness – and abuse from boys shocked by how good she was. In fact, Shauna, who suffers from Nephrotic syndrome and has to take regular steroids, wasn’t deterred by the side effects of her medication which can lead to overeating, the swelling of body tissue and make her vulnerable to infections. Shauna’s ability took her first to Manchester City, but it was as Ashton Curzon where she truly flourished under the guidance of coaches who didn’t put pressure on her when she struggled with her illness. Unfortunately, when Curzon disbanded Shauna had to go looking for another club. Fate took her to Stockport County’s
u18’s squad – and she couldn’t be happier. Shauna, an avid Manchester City fan, doesn’t hesitate when asked which player she looks up to. She said: “If you’re talking guy footballers I don’t really look up to them, but in general it has to be Rachel Yankey (pictured). She was selected in the Great Britain squad for the 2012 London Olympics.” Speaking of which, Shauna doesn’t believe the England women’s coach Hope Powell should have been sacked and replaced by a man. And, looking to the future Shauna still has her sights set on a football career. Said Shauna: “My aim is to get a sports scholarship in America and make a contribution to football like my sporting hero Rachel Yankey.” N CORRESPONDENT TT

City halves cost of away games for fans
C
“My aim is to get a sports scholarship in America and make a contribution to football like my sporting hero Rachel Yankey.”
Kolo Toure
all it an early Christmas present if you will but the cost of Manchester City's away games this season will be halved thanks to the club playing Santa. In an unprecedented move Manuel Pellegrini, his players and coaches have each dipped into their own pocket to the tune of around £1,000 so that the club can offer half price tickets to season ticket holders at selected matches throughout the campaign. It is understood that the games furthest away games or matches that take place within a few days of each other will be prioritised. The Blues, along with other Premier League clubs, set aside £200,000 to improve experiences at away matches for supporters.
"Our away support is the best in the Premier League and we never take that for granted.” Manchester City fans are famous for their fiercely loyal and vocal support. They have stuck with the club through thick and thin for generations and both the club and players see this as a way to say thank you. City captain, Vincent Kompany, one of those to make a donation, added: “In my opinion, our away support is the best in the Premier League and we never take that for granted. “Win, lose or draw, City supporters can always be heard throughout our games and I just hope that this initiative proves just how much we value this incredible support on the road."

THE DEVIL’S HORNS WON’T DISAPPEAR JUST BECAUSE THERE’S A SHEET OVER HIS HEAD
S
ix Wednesdays ago, I found myself grappling with common sense whilst listening in disbelief as one Clive Henry told me of his unfortunate saga. Within minutes of our interview a beamed across my mind as I thought that, although cloaked in White smiles, beach-blonde periwigs and black robes, the Devil does still exist!’ Although perhaps less blatant than in the 1960s, ‘he’ however continues to remorselessly use Black people’s hearts to sharpen the prongs of his pitchfork. Yes, I am talking about racism here and really don’t know where to begin but at the beginning! For over a decade, Clive Henry worked for global package delivery company, UPS. His impeccable work ethic included 100% attendance. Nonetheless, things took a turn for the worse when, in 2005, the company merged with courier parcel delivery company, Lynx Express, and Clive found himself under the management of the newly acquired company. Clive, a Sales Supervisor, soon found himself labouring under an excessive work load and soaring sales targets. Within three months, Clive was put on a Performance Improvement Plan (PIP) which,
he said, was unauthorised by the company’s Human Resources department. “I exceeded the £3,000 target….a month later the manager moved the goalposts to £4,000 basically to get me out of the job in an underhanded way”, Clive explained. When Clive missed that target the following month, he was given a written warning. It was right then, that “it dawned on me that something was clearly wrong”, he said. So as the prongs on the pitchfork began to pierce Clive’s skin, he decided to approach his manager to ask if he was the only one on a PIP. The response received, amongst other things, eventually led to Clive taking the company to the Race Discrimination Tribunal where he

represented himself but lost as, he alleges, the judge was “biased and ignored all the factual evidence I presented”. By this point in his unfortunate saga, Clive saw straight through the ‘sheet’ of political correctness covering the ‘Establishment’s’ head to the horns behind the facade. The devil had been unveiled! The ‘fighter’ within him saw Clive appeal against the decision in his case all the way to Brussels where the Commission concluded that it “is not able to interfere in national court proceedings. We are not able to take any further action in this matter.” Now en-route to the criminal justice system, Clive continues with his community work through which he teaches children the importance of zero tolerance for all forms of discrimination; “The psychology of slavery is still here but the establishment uses ‘politically correct’ words to keep us down. I’m educating people to read into things more intelligently”, he concluded. Clive’s case can be followed on Twitter @clivehenry1. N YASIN CHINEMBIRI TT

With the BME community, Black men in particular, being disproportionately represented in mental health institutions, the positive benefit to be derived from having more qualified counsellors from the local community goes without saying and ought to be embraced. MCTC are accredited by the Counselling and Psychotherapy Central Awarding Body (CPCAB) and work with ‘Support 4 Progress’ to provide high quality counselling and training services, both on and off-site, in a number of tailored courses that aid effective communication skills amongst peers, colleagues, friends and family.
NATIONAL HIV WEEK
1
st December is World Aids Day. This is, of course, recognised throughout the world but what about National HIV Testing Week? The Black Health Agency (BHA) for Equality in Manchester and its partners, HIV Prevention England (HPE), are calling on Africans in England to help halt the spread of infection within their communities by pledging their support for this year’s National HIV Testing Week - 22nd to 29th November. From Wednesday 6th November, people were invited to add a short pledge of support to a new section of the It Starts With Me website (www. startswithme.org.uk). Pledges can include pre-written statements, personal stories, photos or videos, all of which will come together to form an online wall of community voices. There is an option to remain anonymous, and another allowing people to share pledges with their friends on Facebook. The website also makes it easier for Africans living in
England to find a local testing service. If someone pledges to take a test during National HIV Testing Week, the website refers them to an online directory with details of their nearest testing centre. If recently tested, they are instead referred to a page where they can schedule their next appointment and set a reminder, if they so choose. Nigel Richards, Coordinator of HIV and Sexual Health services at the BHA in Manchester (located in Old Trafford) said: “In the vast majority of cases, HIV is passed on by someone who doesn’t yet know they have the virus. So if everyone gets tested, we could start to see [the rate of] new infections fall among our communities. Getting diagnosed also means that you can access free medication to
assist with staying well. There is no good reason for not knowing what your status is so we look forward to the whole community getting behind National HIV Testing Week, spreading the word and really raising the roof on getting tested.” In the UK, Africans remain one of the groups most at risk of contracting HIV. Currently, one in four Africans with HIV is undiagnosed and therefore more likely to pass the virus on to others than someone who has been diagnosed, following a routine test, and is receiving treatment. Date for your diary: National HIV Testing Week, Friday 22nd - Friday 29th November 2013. Please visit www.startswithme. org.uk to pledge your support for National HIV Testing Week.
‘A WEE BIT GINGER’
A
talk with Tracy Neil, 44, about her recent business venture. I have lived in Moss Side for almost twenty years. My background is varied as I’ve done lots of voluntary work and paid employment too including being a Welfare Rights Officer (way back in the last century!) and working in admin. I currently work as a note-taker, supporting disabled students at the Universities and also do some voluntary work with the Albert Kennedy Trust and Mosscare Housing Association. I’ve been making cards to give to family and friends for years as a hobby but only recently thought about making them to sell. One day I was chatting away with my neighbour and she mentioned that she was fed-up of buying cards and having to colour the faces in different shades of brown to suit her family - she is White, her husband is Black, and they have a little girl. That
was around Father’s Day this year. An idea was born! I did a little research and realised that not only were Black and Mixedrace people not represented, but also that I had never seen a card with a disabled person on it. It seemed unfair. So I set out to create cards to fill this gap. I also make cards for the lesbian and gay market as these seemed to be in short supply too! The business itself has been running for around a month now. I was unemployed over the summer and on Job Seeker’s Allowance
so was able to get the New Enterprise Allowance to help me set it up. I have found some fantastic artists who produce great images and these are the pictures I use on most of the cards. As the business grows, I will be adding more designs. If you see a card that you like on the website, I can reproduce it in any skin tone to match the recipient’s skin tone. I am not going to end up a millionaire because the cards are hand-made and very labour intensive! However, there is huge satisfaction in doing something I love which hopefully helps people celebrate key moments in their lives too! Additionally, I have hearing loss which will eventually affect my paid employment so it really does make sense to look at other ways of supporting myself. I chose the name 'A Wee Bit Ginger' simply because I'm ‘wee’ (Scottish for ‘little’) and ‘ginger’!

Sidnie
ome fashion lovers may fly out to Paris or even New York; but right here, in the heart of Manchester, resides a self-professed “short Black woman” named Sidnie: fashion designer and proud owner of a small boutique named Sidnie Co Couture. Sidnie has lived in Manchester for most of her life. Her biggest inspiration and influences came mostly from her Jamaican mother who, although studied hair and beauty, regularly worked as a dressmaker. But Sidnie didn’t always dream of being where she is today. When she was at school

she dropped needlework as soon as she could. It was her brother who brought her attention to a fashion course at The University of Salford. Unsurprisingly, Sidnie was a natural and even went on to acquire a Masters Degree in Product Development in Fashion. It has not always been plain sailing for Sidnie however. Over the years she has had her fair share of knock-backs.
As Sidnie explains, “the fashion industry is extremely labour intensive, which means that manpower is essential.” She has put her faith into others when working as part of a team many a time, but has often found herself left to continue her journey

She has worked with the likes of Misha B (The X Factor) in her first year of opening and also collaborated with Cleo Higgins (The Voice) in the shop’s second year. Many other well-known faces have been spotted in Sidnie’s creations including Michelle White who has raised thousands of pounds for the British Heart Foundation. Sidnie welcomes collaborations from external designers and, as a mentor for The Prince’s Trust, she also encourages young people with a passion to think carefully and follow their dreams. “The fruit’s there for the taking you just have to stretch out properly and get it”. For anyone who would like to gain further insight into the fashion industry, Sidnie provides

When asked for any parting words Sidnie concluded: “If you want something quirky, unusual and something that makes a statement then Sidnie Co Couture is the place for you”.

VijouX Orient in Manchester
W
inter jewellery has just received a touch of the orient in the form of a bespoke jewellery collection designed by Manchester-based, ViJouX. T H A M THEU, VijouX ’s Autumn/ Winter 2013 collection, was inspired by the story of an 80 year old Vietnamese rug, Chinese symbols and Eastern architecture and is a beauty to behold. ViJouX designer and founder, Manyi Takor, has managed to turn the concept of designer jewellery on its head, and beautifully so, with a collection that takes the idea of complexity and strips it back to beautiful minimalism. Enamelled copper, steel, silk and crystals provide a refreshing alternative for women who buck the trend and want to stand out. Named for the
dreams, hopes and emotions they evoke, the classily etched collection beckons its wearers to connect with the innermost desires of their heart through the interplay of symbolism and colour. The collection also incorporates statement pieces in ViJouX’s break-out style of hand-crocheted gold
filled wire. With each piece customisable by different coloured enamels, silk tassels and Swarovski crystals, the possibilities for personalisation are endless. N CORRESPONDENT TT
