Manchester voted best city in UK again TNT News

M

anchester has, once again, reclaimed its title of being the best city in the UK.

In the annual Global Liveability Ranking by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIUn) – which provides scores for lifestyle challenges in 140 cities – Manchester respectably ranked 43rd worldwide, and 1st in the UK. Falling 10 places behind us was London, the 53rd most liveable city in the world. Though the capital city has more cultural attractions and more robust infrastructure, London’s lower score reflects the perceived higher risk of terrorism and crime. Across the world, Melbourne remained the most liveable city, followed by Vienna and Vancouver. The cities voted most unfavourable to live in included Kiev, Douala, Harare and Lagos. Ranking 51st in 2014, 46th in 2015 and now placing 43rd the upward trajectory of our city in the world rankings is impressive to say the least. Whether our achievement in the world ranking is due to our rapidly improving infrastructure, our award-winning museums and galleries, a thriving calendar of theatre and cultural events or renowned sports institutions – our Northern city has proven its unquestionable value.

The laugh-out-loud show is hosted in an intimate venue – but what the venue lacks in size, the show makes up for in laughter. Established and emerging comics – including Will-E, Haseeb Malik and Zahra Barri amongst others – performed at the 7 August gig. A full house gathered at the gig for what turned out to be a truly hilarious evening of – at times – very tongue-in-cheek humour. A receptive crowd is crucial at any comedy gig – after all, an audience is there to be entertained – and that’s exactly what ‘Laff Til Ya Fart’ promises. Malik and Barri are two acts not

to be missed. Barri’s material regarding her Persian background and culture is so wrong that it becomes right. Malik’s anecdotal tales of his cross-cultural relationship as well as the discipline he faced as a child, are laugh-out-loud comedy gold. The host himself, Trevor Dwyer Lynch, gave the audience exactly what they were after. Renowned as a truly hilarious figure, some members of the audience travelled from far and in between to see his outstanding performance.

Will-E’s contagious energy and charisma stole the show. An act with (as they say) a ‘resting face’, the comedian didn’t even have to speak to create an infectious laughter amongst the crowd. His anecdote regarding the elderly woman on the train is one not to be missed.

The next scheduled event for ‘Laff Til Ya Fart’ is due to take place 2 October. Tickets are available for the reasonable price of £10 online and on the door. anchester is a city that truly champions diversity. Diversity can be seen in race, sexuality, style, the list goes on. August Bank Holiday weekend was Manchester’s annual #Pride festival, a prime example of the city’s love for celebrating difference. The event had the support of big companies and organisations, such as Tesco, who changed the Tesco logo on their stores to the Pride rainbow colours. Split between two stages, big names performed throughout the evenings. Amongst these was X Factor 2014’s Fleur East, who delivered an energetic set on the main stage on Sunday evening.

In an interview with Gay Times magazine, she explained why she is such a supporter of Pride, saying, “Be unique! The world would be so boring if we were all the same”.

84-year-old grandma hospitalised after police attack n 84-year-old woman was hospitalised earlier this month after an unprovoked pepper spray attack by police. What started with an ordinary traffic stop, soon turned into an event of excessive and unnecessary force for the elderly woman, Geneva Smith. Smith’s son, who is yet to be named, was pulled over by police

for speeding. The man refused to stop his vehicle and proceeded to drive to his mother’s house and run inside. After arriving at the property, police then began to use force to kick the door down. The elderly woman came out of her property to inquire why her house was being vandalised, where she was met with a pepper spray attack. According to sources, the officer who undertook the attack did not say a word before he issued

the pepper spray on the elderly woman. Police then proceeded by taking the woman to jail where she became ill and had to be transported to hospital.

The 37-year-old MP spoke after a recent survey for Prostate Cancer UK found that, 86 per cent of black men were unaware of their increased risk, with 1 in 12 dying yearly from the disease. The poll, released during Ethnic Minority Cancer Awareness Month, exposes a widespread lack of awareness of both the disease and the gland itself amongst black men in the UK. The prostate gland is an important component of the male sex system, but 92 per cent don’t know what the sex gland does for them, 62 per cent don’t know where it is located in the body, and nearly a fifth (19 per cent) are unaware they even have a prostate. 1 in 4 Black men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime and 1 in 12 will die from it – double the risk faced by white men in the UK.

n the South Manchester suburb of Fallowfield, long term residents Cath Clarke and Lil Luckham have been instrumental in saving the town’s local library from the threat of imminent closure. Lil Luckham: From my first visit as a child back in 1965, this library opened my world up. I came from a very overcrowded home where there were no books so if you wanted to do your homework, you went to your local library. I remember the very first thing I came to this library for: my teacher had said you need to go home and start a project about Tutankhamun. I remember asking my mother about it and she said, ‘who’s he; who’s that?’ so I came to the library and I was sent me to the children’s section. The librarian bought me this huge encyclopaedia and from that moment onwards it just changed my outlook on everything. It really did open

my entire world.

When the proposed closure came about, my anger, it was palpable. People will tell you I was the very angry one in the beginning. I read a great article by Janet Street Porter a couple of years ago. She said the saviours of society would be grumpy old women, so I’m more than happy to be classed as that, if this building continues to thrive and grow and keep contributing. Cath Clarke: When I came back into this library, nostalgia kicked in. I used to come here as a child and a young teenager. I moved back to Fallowfield five and a half years ago. I started to see people again that I’d known from 40 odd years prior. Those friendships had built up. I went into a local church coffee morning with a neighbour a few years ago and I was handed a small flier that said, ‘Fallowfield Library is to close’. continued online

here is a war going on. Like many wars, it is based around the inequalities of power, lack of empathy and the assured arrogance that their will is righteous and just. This battle has lasted over a millenia and shows no signs of slowing. In fact, long before Oedipus waged war on his father for his mother’s affections, (I know gross right!) teenagers have argued and warred with their parents. As just mentioned, much of the arguments come from a long history of both sides not fully understanding each other. Parents believe that they are the enlightened ones, as they were young once and understand what it is best. The typical teenage retort is that times are different and adults are not necessarily the experts they claim to be. One divisive topic is the effect of video games. I remember it was a Thursday when I went to Frank’s house not far from the school and took his X Box console to my office, locked it away until his grades improved. This prearranged intervention was in response to his excessive hours of playing video games when he should by preparing for his exams. An article from the Telegraph, comments on recent research that suggests video games can be beneficial in subjects like maths and science, owing to their problem solving qualities. If you are a teenager, take that ‘I told you so!’ look off your face, because it’s not as simple as that. Firstly, it’s only certain games and as a parent, you sense gaming is used as an attempt to spot the differences between boys and girls instead of gamers and non-gamers. Also, what is not highlighted is the apathetic attitude to violence, as a possible reaction to violence in games. I am a gamer, but I do think promotion of games as productive, can be dangerous. It’s not a declaration of war but maybe a compromise is needed.

Irish immigration to Jamaica occurred primarily through the importation of indentured servants. Manchester commits to new dementia-friendly pharmacies TNT NEWS

P

harmacies across Greater Manchester will become more dementia-friendly thanks to a new scheme developed by the Greater Manchester Pharmacy Local Professional Network and launched by the Greater Manchester Health and Social Care Partnership. Over 850,000 people (and rising) in the UK have dementia (with almost 30,000 in Greater Manchester). While there is no cure of the progressive disease, the symptoms will get worse over time. Alzheimer’s Society recently reported that dementia costs the UK over £26 billion a year (just under £968 million for Greater Manchester). The new framework launched, ensure the needs of dementia sufferers are met, clearly sets out the various ways in which local pharmacies and their teams can give greater support to people with

dementia. Measures in place include ensuring adequate dementia awareness training is provided to pharmacy staff, a quiet area for discussion, helping a dementia patient with medicines or prescriptions and ensuring the pharmacy has local support readily available. George McNamara, Head of Policy and Public Affairs at Alzheimer’s Society, said: “7 in 10 people with dementia live with one or more co-morbidities. This means they often have a

number of medicines to manage at the same time. This can be challenging for both the person with dementia and their carer. “It is important that pharmacies, along with other high street health and wellbeing service providers such as opticians and dentists, are equipped to support the needs of people affected by dementia and take on the role as a community hub. The launch of this dementia-friendly pharmacies framework in Greater Manchester is a step towards this vision”.

Michael Jordan said: ‘I have failed over and over again in my li ity to reflect and even re-evaluate and come back even stronger. Failure can help us to grow, mature and learn a totally new perspective on life. Failure can be good, if we learn from it. We can learn from failure if we: • Realise that experience is a great teacher. Experience helps you to become wiser. Therefore, failure is just another lesson that you learn. Failure is a lesson paid in the journey of life. • Understand that sometimes good things don’t happen overnight. It can take good planning and patience. Lots of it. • Prepared to evaluate and look at what went wrong: Don’t just give and move on. Analyse your failure/s and identify what went wrong so you do not repeat the same mistake again, and again, and again. Finally, the entrepreneur Richard Branson said, ‘do not be embarrassed by your failures, learn from them and start again’. Stay focused and stay blessed.

Whilst they have expanded to accommodate a breakfast and hearty lunch menu, Teacup stays true to their origins with the array of deliciously unusual tea

Hard Time Bus Film Review: A fter winning ‘Best Feature’ at the American Black Film Festival, Director Charles Dean, Producers Nicola Gregory and production company, 2HOTFILMS, premiered their relationship drama ‘Hard Time Bus’ in Manchester’s HOME o. In a feature-length debut, the awardwinning director teamed up with Birmingham writer, Owen Mowatt and Actor, Neil Reidman to create this fascinating, multilayered drama. Based on real life experiences, ‘Hard Time Bus’ encapsulates the misadventures of a commitment-phobic everyman, Mark Bishop. Bishop, played by Neil Reidman, is best described in classical terms as a Lethario character – in modern days, he may be described as the ultimate player. With

multiple short-term partners, growing complacency in his relationship and failure to prioritise time between friends and his long-term girlfriend, Mark soon finds out that apologises eventually have an expiration date.

After a rude awakening, Bishop makes hasty plans to marry long-term girlfriend Denise, but patience is severely tested following a complicated web of lies and deceit. In an eye-opening insight into the male mind, audiences will see the obstacles and the hard time bus that hits Mark as he struggles to communicate with the person he loves. In a pursuit for forgiveness, relationships will be tested proving that the course of true love never did run smooth.

anchester’s long running Caribbean carnival is undoubtedly the North West’s biggest celebration of Caribbean music, art and culture. It is no surprise then that the return of the Caribbean Carnival of Manchester (CCOM) this weekend drew thousands to Alexandra Park on the first of the two-day annual festival.

CCOM’s glorious return kicked off with the signature parade that saw a host of dancers dressed in colourful costumes whilst partying to booming calypso and dancehall music. The groups of dancers began their procession in the park then onto Alexandra Road towards Moss Lane, before the final stretch on Claremont road, where festive-goers and spectators lined the streets with their smartphones snapping away the colourful moments. From amusement park games and rides, to 10 stages, food stalls and plenty of merchandise, there really was something for everyone on the opening day of this famous Moss Side festival. Although the build-up to this year’s event had been marred with the rumoured £1 entry fee into the park, the event was free provided you complied with a brief search from security staff at the entry points of the park. Gwen Morris, who travelled with her 6-year-old son and 5-year-old niece from Leeds told TNT, “I last came here when he [her son] was about 3. This year it seems much bigger and with more variety and even more stages I think. Everyone is having fun, the food is so amazing and the sun is shining; we’re loving it”.

Eva Rinaldi

With the past week’s weather being intermittent with its sunshine, thousands queued to enter the park where the rest of the party got into full swing by late afternoon. The 10 stages this year included the North Manchester FM stage, the returning Red Bull stage, Legacy FM, with acts such as south Manchester’s R.I.O, TK Diamonds and Birmingham’s grime queen Lady Leshurr.

The song in question is his Grammy Awardwinning single “Thinking Out Loud”, which spent a record breaking year within the UK Top 40. The lawsuit reportedly accuses the 25-year-old singer of stealing components of the melody, harmony and rhythm from Marvin Gaye’s steamy 1973 hit. This lawsuit comes only four weeks after a similar case was made against Sheeran for allegedly plagiarising fractions of “Photograph” from X-Factor winner Matt Cardle’s “Amazing”. It may not be the first lawsuit that has been raised against Sheeran and it’s not the first lawsuit made by Gaye’s associates either. In 2013, the family and estate of Gaye took “Blurred Lines” writers Robin Thicke and Pharell to trial for copyright infringements on Gaye’s 1977 “Got To Give it Up”. Gaye’s estate reached a settlement with SONY and won significant monetary compensation.

The jerk chicken stalls, signature dishes for Caribbean carnivals, were spreading familiar barbeque wafts across the park as salivating groups of revellers had their take-away boxes filled with the Caribbean dish.

anchester biggest annual community talent showcase – Manchester’s Got Talent (MGT) – bowed out with a bang when it gave the city what may be its final ever show, on 5 August.

With no funding confirmed for next year, MGT’s founder Akeim Mundell made sure that the final show was the biggest and most successful yet. The free event hosted an array of talent from various age groups, with the audience’s seats at Manchester Metropolitan University’s New Birley Fields Campus all filled. A platform for members of the community to shine and showcase their talent, MGT also enables families to come along and enjoy the event at no cost. With over 400 attendees, this year’s MGT was “a massive success. There was a queue outside of guests who were not allowed in” as the venue’s capacity was full, an hour into the show.

Akeim confirmed that members of Simon Cowell’s Britain’s Got Talent (BGT) even attended the event “To scout acts for the BGT show. After the show, they asked for details from a handful of the acts which was great! Since the show, the feedback has been brilliant – from both our own Manchester residents and from guests who travelled from other cities to attend”.

T

TNT Business

Africa shrinking? TNT Jonathan Thomas

eenager Robert Mfune has managed to hit millionaire status by trading from his bedroom, whilst working parttime at McDonald’s and completing his A-Levels. He learnt the tricks of the trade whilst doing odd-jobs for a finance firm after college.

Combining the basics that he was able to pick up at the firm, with research that he was able to do from his computer, Robert began to make incredible amounts of money. The young businessman has now made enough to stop doing his fast-food shifts, and has quit the job.

A

ccording to the headlines drawn from a recent global research project which featured heavily in our own press, the Dutch are, on average, the tallest in the world, while improving dietary, sanitary and healthcare provision has underpinned a broad rise in average heights across the globe. However, what really caught my eye was the finding some countries in Sub-Saharan Africa including, Niger, Rwanda, Sierra Leone and Uganda, had seen a decline average heights over the last five decades. Assuming that the findings are correct, then the most obvious implication, and one which the authors of the study and much of the media intimated, is that these countries have slipped up badly on some of the basics since the 1960s. But there are other potential explanations. Given the authors own conclusion that about a third of height differences reflects our genes, then it is perfectly plausible that the decline reflects taller SSA couples having fewer children while shorter couples moved in the opposite direction. Or perhaps the average emigrant has been, on average, taller than new arrivals. Still let’s not let real thinking obscure a lazy conclusion.

Despite claiming that he is not interested in the material things in life, Robert has purchased a number

of expensive cars with his earnings, including a Range Rover and a gold Bentley. Speaking of what he plans to do with the rest of the money, he says, “My goal is to make people happy. I’d like to make sure that everyone has got what they need and that’s me done”. He has demonstrated this already, by buying his mum a new car and new house, to make sure that she’s comfortable. Robert describes the period of time in which he juggled college work, exams, shifts at work and his trading as “the toughest time of my life”.

Team GB finish second in the medals table

t’s been a truly momentous competition for Team GB, who have finished in second place, with 67 medals.

This year’s medal count is the most successful in 108 years, even beating the amount of medals achieved at London 2012 with the support of the home crowd. There’s been an abundance of medals since Adam Peaty clinched the first for Team GB, when he won gold in the men’s 100m breaststroke.

Another precious moment for team GB came when 58-year-old Nick Skelton became the second oldest Brit to secure gold at any games. After breaking his neck and retiring 16 years ago, he went on to win the individual show jumping event at Rio. The final medal of many came on the final day of the tournament, when Joe Joyce claimed silver in the men’s super heavyweight boxing. An overwhelming number of our athletes will be returning from Rio with medals, including the entire track cycling team.

These included a historic moment for our women’s hockey team, who took gold after coming out victorious in a penalty shoot-out against the Netherlands. It was the first medal for a British hockey team since the men won in 1988.
