Chorlton High School, a co-educational secondary school, Parrs Wood High School in East Didsbury and Whalley Range High School for Girls were credited for continued progress in their exam scores over the previous three years. Each of the institutions received a letter from the minister – the Liberal Democrat Member of Parliament for Yeovil. The letters acknowledged the respective schools for their achievements and continuous progression of results over the past few years in the number of students acquiring five or more A*-C GCSE grades in a wide range of subjects including Maths and English. The results obtained from the three Manchester schools places them among the top 100 schools nationally in contrast to the developments made by supplementary schools. In his letter to the schools David Laws affirmed: ‘‘The results are a shining testament to the hard work and success of your staff,

governors and pupils. I would like to CCOM to you and all at your offer my thanks school for your pursuit of the highest standards of educational achievement.” Headteacher of Parrs Wood High School, Andy Shakos, reflected on the accomplishment by declaring: “This is proving to be a great year so far for Parrs Wood and we’re determined to keep doing all we can to make sure that every student here achieves as well as they can. All credit should go to our staff team and students for their sustained hard work over the last three years.” Councillor Sheila Newman, Manchester City Council’s Executive Member for Children’s Services, also paid her compliments for their achievements:

‘‘This is well deserved praise for these three schools and reflects the hard work of staff and pupils. Exam results across the city have continued to improve year-on-year and, thanks to the commitment and enthusiasm of teaching staff in our schools, our results are now the closest they have been for the last few years to national averages and we’re confident of even further improvement again this year.” An elated Patsy Kane, Headteacher at allgirl school, Whalley Range High, added: “We’re delighted to have the hard work of our staff and students recognised in this way. We’re committed to working together to ensure we maintain these high standards and making sure our students have the best possible choices in the future.”

Headteacher of Chorlton High School Andy Park remarked: ‘‘It’s great to be recognised in this way but what’s really important is the fact that more pupils than ever are now leaving our school with good solid GCSE results that will stand them in good stead in the future.” Educational bodies in the Manchester region are on the rise of late; latest figures reveal that three other Greater Manchester schools are in the top 20 for A-Level results in England. Leading educationalists have indicated Altrincham Grammar School for Girls (AGSG) as the pre-eminent state school in Greater Manchester and the ninth best in the country.

Dear Readers, Here’s hoping that this issue’s letter from me finds you all well, at peace and happy! Without further ado and without apology I draw attention to the Reader’s Voice column on this page. It publishes a letter from a brave young man who is standing up and asking to be counted. Akeim Mundell, clearly a credit to his parents, is displaying leadership qualities that we should all aspire to whether young or old. A truism it is that there are some very disconcerting things going on with the CCoM but, put quite simply, why wouldn’t any committee want a young man of Akeim’s calibre and standing within the community on their board to represent the community’s youth? Manchester City Council clearly thinks that he’s a great asset! So why would seemingly petty things such as misspelt names (by the committee itself) be used to prevent his involvement? Is there a clause in CCoM’s constitution that forbids involvement by the young? I doubt it - that would amount to ‘ageism’ (it goes both ways!) an unacceptable platform from which to base a policy of exclusion. As adults we are the very group who ‘cry down’ the young people of today – we refer to them as ‘lazy’, ‘criminal’, ‘gangsters’, ‘good for nothing’, ‘a crying shame’, ‘a disappointment’ and so on and so forth ad infinitum. Yet, here we have a fine young man who is accredited with all the things we would all like

our own children to have achieved and he is not welcome to sit on the board of CCoM as a youth representative! Thus TNT, in the interest of fairness and on behalf of our youth and our community, asks the single searching question of the powers that be at CCoM; WHY? Why, at a time when the youth are demonised, would you allow yourself to appear to be seeking to exclude them rather than committing yourself to include them in what is essentially their business too? Why exclude such a seemingly fine and up-standing young man from representing his peer group? Why not take the lead in including the young in such matters, hopefully with the end result of the youth finding something within their community that they can get involved in, execute and then look back on with pride? Issues surrounding carnival are looming large and perhaps it is appropriate for CCoM to seek to quell the situation rather than fan the flames by, at the very least, setting out their position in a response to Akeim’s earnest letter. There is more than enough time to redeem a souring situation if we all humble ourselves and do what is right, particularly by the generation that includes our very own children and grandchildren who will, after all, still be here when we are long gone! On another note, before publication of TNT’s next issue, all mothers will have had their ‘day’ so, to end on an upbeat note, here’s wishing one and all “Happy Mother’s Day!”

y name is Akeim Mundell and I’m 19years old. I am a part time student at the University of Bolton studying for a Degree in Teaching & Education. I have taken on a number of roles in the community, namely, full time Teaching Assistant at St. Marys Primary School; Ambassador for Moss Side on behalf of Manchester City Council; Role Model; Event Planner; Actor (have been cast in Waterloo Road and Shameless); Award Winner; Support & Inspirational Speaker; Board Member, Youth Discovery Ventures; Community Guardian for the Manchester City Council; Heroes & Sheroes Award Winner for 2013; Member of the Co-operative Trust; Student Council Representative for Skills Solutions on behalf of the Teaching Assistant Degree Students; Community Force Be Proud Award Winner for 2013/14 •·˙ Please be advised that from day one I have wanted to be on the board of Carnival Committee members so as to be in a position to represent the younger generation. We young people in Manchester feel that the Manchester Carnival could be better and we also feel that young people should be given a voice and should have the opportunity to put forward ideas in order for our carnival to be perfect for all ages. I think it’s absolutely terrible that I was not given the chance to become a board member or to be voted into an active position ostensibly because the ‘Carnival Secretary’ spelt my name incorrectly on the voting form! There are many of us out here who want to be involved in the Carnival Committee of Manchester (CCoM) for the right reasons, namely, to improve our Carnival and make it one of the best! This is our community too and we ought to be given the chance to get involved.

WINNERS

The 16th British Academy Film Awards (BAFTA) was held on Sunday 16th February 2014 at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, London, with Stephen Fry as host for the 9th year running.

This year’s event was another star-studded and glitzy affair with fans screaming as their favourite actors walked the red carpet. Angelina Jolie, accompanied by husband Brad Pitt, broke all the rules of orthodoxy dressed in a tuxedo. Oprah Winfrey, up for Best Supporting Actress for her role in The Butler, flew in specially to walk the red carpet whilst Lupita Nyong’o wooed the crowds and appeared to own the red carpet in a stunning green Christian Dior Couture gown. Tinie Tempah was one of the designated entertainers at the BAFTAs. During his performance the audience were surprised, not so much when the rapper high-fived the Duke of Cambridge, as

when he received a high five in return; a future monarch with great street cred judging by social media sites! No great shocks though as the award for Best Picture went to 12 Years a Slave. Director Steve McQueen reminded us all that slavery was not a thing of the past: “There are 21 million people in slavery as we sit here, I just hope 150 years from now our ambivalence will not allow another filmmaker to make this film,” he said upon accepting the award. Brad Pitt also said of the film, “it’s a story that says we’re all the same and that freedom and our dignity is everything and that’s what we must fight for.”

Other award winners included: • Best actor: Chiwetel Ejiofor, 12 Years a Slave • Best British film: Gravity • Best supporting actor: Barkhad Abdi • Best director: Alfonso Cuaron • Best actress: Cate Blanchett

The UK and France have criticised the Syrian administration for their failure to take part in peace talks with the resistance at the Geneva peace summit.

In a statement from UK Foreign Secretary, William Hague, he declared: “The responsibility for it lies squarely with the Assad regime. “The failure to agree an agenda for future rounds of talks is a serious setback in the search for peace in Syria.” Correspondingly, William Hague’s French counterpart, Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius, condemned the Near Eastern country, blaming Syria for the breakdown of the negotiations. By way of a reason for his position he cited delegates from Syria impeding any chance of development in the discussions. “I blame the attitude of the Syrian regime which blocked any progress on establishing a transitional government and stepped up violence and acts of terror against the civilian population,” Fabius remarked. The impasse remains a setback for peace as Hague, former leader of the Conservative Party, pointed the finger at Syrian President, Bashar al-Assad’s regime. Since virtually the start of the conflict the Syria has constantly accused the UK

and France of backing the rebels. Discussions on the revival of peace talks have stopped with neither solutions nor confirmation of whether or not they will resume being achieved. Both sides of the table have seemingly deviated from the quest for resolutions, with initial talks held last month also failing to produce a solution for the fierce and bloody warring in Syria. Meanwhile, William Hague made a request for a fresh UN Security Council solution saying: “It is also now more urgent than ever to move forward with a UN Security Council resolution that addresses the appalling humanitarian suffering in Syria. The people in Syria’s besieged areas and the many parts of the country not receiving any aid cannot wait,” he stated. UN arbitrator Lakhdar Brahimi expressed regret to the Syrian people for the disappointing consultations: “It’s not good for Syria that we come back for another round and fall in the same traps”.

Hague then responded with a call to back the UN mediator and the Geneva process. Bashar al-Jaafari, permanent delegate of the Syrian Arab Republic to the United Nations, weighed into the delicate situation by underlining that terrorism needs to be procured completely before further aspects could be examined: “Once you have an agenda you should respect the agenda fully without any interpretation or misinterpretation... we said that we cannot move from... item one to item two or item three or item four without fully considering this item and concluding [with] a common vision of this item by the two sides, something that the other side objected to.” UN mediator Brahimi concluded by proposing an itinerary for the future comprised of talks on national appeasement, an intermediate governing body and violence and terrorism relating to the troubles in war-torn Syria.

NHS and Health Minister face Medical Records sale revolt It is no secret that public confidence in the government is still distinctly low, at least since the MP’s expenses scandal for sure. To put it simply, very few of us trust what MPs say or do; a lot of us seemingly do not like our government for many a reason. Things are not looking any brighter either as news of the new NHS Medical Records database poses a great privacy risk and a multitude of implications for the public. In brief, the nation’s medical date, gleaned from GP and hospital records, will from March, be passed over to a new NHS Health and Social Care Information Centre (HSCIC) for uploading onto their

Information passed on to this body and uploaded onto the new system will then be accessible to all forms of business corporations such as universities – perhaps for the purpose of conducting research - but also insurance and drug companies upon application to the new centre. Once the application is accepted, payment must be made to the HSCIC to access and extract the required information from the database. In response to this audacious planned

step, factions of the government are revolting and public outrage appears to be sweeping the country as Jeremy Hunt MP, Secretary of State for Health and the NHS, seeks to make the nation’s private medical information available for sale to corporations and researchers alike; personal information such as mental health conditions, sexually transmitted infections, drug and alcohol problems will then no longer be confidential records if an application to access it is successful... and why wouldn’t it be? Whilst the NHS have said that all infor-

mation so given will be ‘anonymous’ only the date of birth, postcode, gender and ethnicity of each patient is intended to be included - experts, including the NHS’s own risk analysis, advise that the database is wide open to misuse and that the information will merely be “pseudononymised” as not enough “personal identifiers” will have been erased from the records in order to render them fully anonymous. The need for scrutiny as to why patients are being “kept in the dark”is also highlighted.

Anil Khalil Raoufi from Manchester was killed fighting in Syria. The 20 year old took the voyage to combat with rebels in Syria. Raoufi, also known as Abu Layth al-Khurasani, lived in Didsbury. It is believed that he was fighting for a Jihadist group against Syrian government forces. Counter-terrorism police indicate that he died whilst fighting in gun battle; police units were sent to search Anil Khalil Raoufi’s house and speak to his family. Raoufi tweeted messages claiming that the war in Syria was comparable to the movie, Star Wars. Writing on the social media site he said: “On our backs watching them fly in

front of our faces, it was like a scene from Star Wars with all the ‘zing’ noises and red lights.” Mr Raoufi was studying Mechanical Engineering at the University of Liverpool and was also an amateur boxer. It is thought he travelled near the Turkish border before travelling to Syria in the autumn of 2013. He was associated with the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIS), an armed counteraction group active in Iraq and Syria. In Syria, thousands have been killed during its bloody civil war. The father of Anil Khalil Raoufi operates two restaurants in Manchester’s renowned ‘Curry Mile’. It is understood that the family have lived in the UK for around ten years.

Do Police really need Stop and Search powers?

There is a saying, ‘if you do what you have always done you will get what you always got’. The issue of Stop and Search remains one of the most controversial issues within the black community. Government statistics show black people are seven times more likely to be stopped than white people, this disproportionality has remained constant over decades. The Police of course have the power to stop and search members of the public under certain circumstances, for instance, you or a vehicle you are in can be stopped by a Police Officer and searched if the Officer has reasonable grounds to suspect

Police can also have powers to stop and search within a specific area where serious violence could take place, offensive weapons are being carried or have been used. There are also powers under the Terrorism Act that allow officers to conduct Stop and Searches for specific purposes. Such is the anger at the apparent abuse of these Police powers commonly referred to as ‘racial profiling’ that some eminent community activists have called for the Police to be stripped of these pow-

ers. The immediate reaction from some commentators is that Police need the powers in order to do their job and keep people safe from crime and disorder. If we take for example the position of the National Black Police Association it can be summed up in three words, ‘Lawful’, ‘Proportionate’ and ‘Necessary’. Whilst they support the use of Stop and Search there is recognition that the tactic must be intelligence-led and not based on stereotypes. In some Forces around the country (Leicester is one example) there is some evidence to suggest that significant reductions in the use of Stop and Search have

coincided with reductions in crime. This of course needs to be examined more closely over time. The question therefore of whether the Police can carry out law enforcement appropriately and effectively without the use of Stop and Search powers can and must in my view be considered on the basis of sound reasoning rather than old assumptions about how best to police our communities. The more challenging question however is whether the Police can police without the use of stereotyping?

The views expressed in this column are not necessarly the views of the Police Service.

US ENERGY GRID ASSAULT TRIGGERS WORRIES OF BLACKOUT

TnT Speakers

I HAD A GREAT LIFE Ms Vanquish

Snipers targeted the substation in San Jose, California, firing shots in quick succession destroying numerous modifiers that supplied Silicon Valley. Authorities believe the same scenario presented itself last year but that the action went mostly unnoticed, initially perceived to be a mere act of vandalism which was reported to the local police. Authorities also believe that this incident was only a dress rehearsal and fear terrorists could plot a wider, more alarming attack on US power grids whilst experts suggest that the initial attack was diligently conceived. US government officials consider this to be a specialised set up as the assailants also disconnected underground transmission lines before they began shooting. Energy officials are now concerned that a greater synchronised strike could potentially disrupt the grid

for a longer period of time. Former chairman of the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), Jon Wellinghoff, coined the sniper attack the foremost national terrorist assault on the power grid. “There are individuals out there capable of doing this sort of damage. Without you knowing that there are people intent on doing this damage, you don’t take it seriously. “Now we know that, we know how well-trained they were, how well they executed this, people are taking this seriously. “The entire United States could go black. If you knocked out enough of these substations in a co-ordinated attack, you could turn the entire country into 2003 blackout.” The blackout in 2003, primarily down to a computer failure, caused

abrupt chaos in regions of North-Eastern and Midwestern United States affecting approximately 40 million people who were deprived of power for several days. Spokesperson for power station Electric and Pacific Gas, Brian Swanson, commented: “This incident was a gamechanger for the industry. It is not just us working alone; the whole industry is working at all levels on how we can improve grid security across the country.” Politicians are lobbying for the levy of federal criterions to defend America’s electric grid from additional attacks. It is understood that the attackers cut fibre optic cables momentarily censuring phone services, particularly emergency services. Gunmen were later said to yield fire on the electrical substation for a 19-minute period

with countless rounds of ammunition. Almost $16 million worth of destruction was caused by the heavy gun fire with no arrests being confirmed at the time of this publication going to print. Predictions of future attacks have local authorities concerned in California. A National Academy of Sciences (NAS) spokesperson surmised: “Considering that a systematically designed and executed terrorist attack could cause disruptions that were even more widespread and of longer duration, it is no stretch of the imagination to think that such attacks could entail costs of hundreds of billions of dollars - that is, perhaps as much as a few percent of the US gross domestic product.”

He seemed to put the nicest things and would say encouraging things like “you are unique,” and “there is no one in this world like you and for that I’m thankful.” I mean this guy was mint and, to top it off his profile wasn’t bad either. It took me a while to notice him because I was so busy being popular, but he definitely got my attention one day when I was having a bad month. My pre-menstrual tension was through the roof, I was quite teary and felt twice my normal size. “You’re on your period aren’t you... don’t worry, you’ll get through it, just get yourself a little chocolate and a hot-water bottle... and if you need someone to talk to I’m here!” I was stunned! Who is this guy? I really started to check out his profile. I accepted him as a friend nine months ago. He was single, good looking and spiritual, I instantly became excited; Antoine was his name.

Many people from a variety of businesses attended the soiree held at the Kingdom Mandate Centre - formerly the NIA Centre - in Hulme to hear from speakers Charles Crichlow and Lee Jasper, enjoy some food and, most importantly, network with one another.

The ‘Speed Networking’- same idea as speed dating but less amorous and more professional - was a great success with many businesses making new contacts after conversing one another for just a minute at a time. Niall Power, from City South Manchester Housing told a packed audience just how The Nubian Times has helped him, “We are wholeheartedly behind The Nubian Times. We’ve found them a very useful tool in getting local people involved in what we’re about. I’d recommend anyone who knows anyone to urge them to invest,” he said. I used the Speed Networking minutes to find out how the event had helped the attendees. Naomi

A careers event challenging the preconception that construction work is just for men. Hear from women who are already successful and enjoying a key role in the industry.

A Stroke is a medical condition caused by the blood supply to the brain being cut off. If the blood supply is restricted or stopped, then the brain cells begin to die due to lack of oxygen which can lead to brain damage and possibly death. There are approximately 150,000 strokes in the UK each year and it is the third largest cause of death after heart disease and cancer. Certain groups of our population are at higher risk of stroke than others, and these include the over 65’s and those from an Asian, African or Caribbean background. In fact, those of an African-Caribbean origin are twice as likely to suffer a stroke as those from a European background. This is due to the natural tendency of these groups developing diabetes, heart disease or having sickle cell anaemia which are conditions that can increase the risk of a stroke itself. Men are at higher risk of having a stroke, although women are one and a half times more likely to die from the attack. Other risk factors for stroke include smoking, being overweight, unhealthy diet and a lack of exercise, as all of these can cause high blood pressure and cholesterol which in turn leads to poor circulation of blood in the body and increases the chances of a blood clot reaching the brain.

Sunday Times ‘Top Ten’ bestseller

y hiatus from outside life brought this book to the top of my winter reading list. I love nothing more than finding some ‘me time’ and soaking in the bath with a good book (perils of soggy book always to the forefront of my mind). It was the title that caught my eye: Fear Nothing. Now, fear is one of those emotions which can consume people’s lives every day. But, isn’t fear just an irrational emotion which arises from something that is to happen in the future? Some could question just how we can become scared of something that has not already happened and whether, on the other hand, the emotion of fear is actually just genetics? Fear Nothing does nothing but insist that you keep reading to the very end. It is a typical psychological thriller but with a ‘real’ twist in the two very different protagonists.

D. D. Warren, a Boston detective has been seriously injured whilst investigating a previous case and is left unable to work. She is sent to Adeline Glen, a therapist who has a genetic condition which renders her unable to feel pain. Adeline has her own ghosts to fight as she is also the sister of a sociopath and the daughter of a psychopath. This is the seventh novel in this series and, although I have not yet read the others, I did not feel as though I knew D. D. Warren any less. Lisa Gardner has written many books but this is the first time I have read her work. Her book gripped me from the start and although it is quite diverse at times, the writing is brilliant and wills you to reach the finale of a tense storyline. A very interesting read… and one which does not disappoint.

THE WOMAN IN BLACK by Susan Hill

t

Immediately on starting this traditional English ghost story I was filled with the spine-tingling presence of a really frightening story to unfold, the prospect of which actually made me quite scared but at the same time the book was hard to put down. However, reading it was reserved for when someone else was in the house!

G

may have about the supernatural; to the contrary, it may merely act as a gateway to many more questions! Towards the end of this book I would only read it in the daytime and with my husband present but it really is brilliantly written and I am now a fan. Will Storr is a photographer and journalist and his work has appeared in many publications including The Sunday Times Magazine and The Observer Magazine. Whether you are a believer or are a sceptic, this book will ensure that, at the end, the real question will be; “is there someone behind me?” This is investigative journalism at its best for both cynic and acceptor which is both chilling and compulsive all at the same time.

One man’s search for the truth about ghosts by Will Storr ersonally I like anything to do with the supernatural and if you are anything like me then you will love this book. This is an adventure through different mediums of scared with Will Storr. The manner in which he writes reminds you of Louis Theroux with the presence of a farcical element to it. In a very humorous way he explains just what it is like to be in the presence of something spooky. What is interesting about this book is that from the beginning you realise, through the excellent use of prose, that it is all a bit cheery for Will. However, although this book starts out somewhat light-heartedly, you soon realise that this is something that will actually scare you to your very core. It is not a book that will answer the questions you

inter, what a brilliant time to read a book! A book can transport you out of the rain and cold to somewhere in Victorian England where everything seems just a little odd. Now, I’d heard of this book many times and whilst in the library had seen it on the shelf with its ghostly old English cover willing me to be brave enough to actually take it home. It’s not a particularly thick book so how many scares can a book of this size have?

The story is beautifully told in a wonderfully atmospheric way that makes your hair stand on end. This gothic tale tells the story of a mysterious woman in black who hauntingly appears when there is to be a death of a child in the village. It is full of heart-pounding description which would lead you to believe that the book was written during the Victorian era when in fact it was actually published in 1983. The author Susan Hill has written novels both before and after this book. Her story is one of my favourites in the Gothic-Horror genre… when I think of scary I think of remote English mansions and small villages where the locals are all a bit weird at first; this is exactly what this book provides. Read it if you’re brave enough… perhaps with the light on!

Greetings from London town!

Without good reason you were gone, To them they saw your skin as wrong. For years they wouldn’t tell us why, They just denied it and told lies. Your family fought and kept so strong, That’s why your legacy lives on. Though you’re not here, we see and feel Your presence on this earth was real. Brother Stephen, as you peacefully lay We remember you as we kneel and pray. May you rest eternally in peace, I pray the Lord your soul to keep.

Ranging from the youth growing up post-war (coined ‘Generation X’) to the current group of young people averaging 13 to 19 years old, they have all been labelled by the elders of their respective generation. Although there has been sufficient reason to assume that a portion of the teenage population are interested in leading a disruptive lifestyle (such as the Telegraph’s 2005-06 figures suggesting that 33% of thirteen to fifteen yearolds in Britain had been drunk at least twice), the same cannot be said for all. During the process of evolving from pre-pubescent children into adults, many young people have fallen into this archetypal image. However many haven’t. The aged and negative connotations associated with young people are being disproved as times goes on.

GROWING

The Next Big Thing is….

Zumba® Step

TnT Victoria Thompson

Due to the continuously changing opinion of what is considered wrong for young people to do, the standards of behaviour that were previously set have been altered. As more sexualised images are shown in the media and fashion trends tend to feature more revealing articles of clothing, more immodest ways of dressing and behaving are increasingly accepted. Also, as the entertainment facilities that are growing in popularity amongst teenagers have extended opening hours (such as under-16 club parties), seeing young adults out beyond times that are considered curfews (10pm for example) isn’t uncommon. With all these factors considered, it is possible to argue that the reason less teenagers seem to be involved in anarchy is because the strict view people use to judge them with is changing. They are not being forced to conform to standards set by people who are not willing to allow them to mature independently.

TnT Navayne Forrester

2014 sees the launch of the next phase of the Zumba® world takeover and I have been extremely lucky to be one of the first instructors globally to train and deliver Zumba® Step exclusively for Virgin Active members across the UK, South Africa, Australia, Singapore, Spain and Italy. Merging the traditional, funky, Latin-inspired workout we all know and love with step apparatus and an aerobic style, class attendees are inspired to take their workout to the next level by using body weight against gravity to burn those pesky calories in an enjoyable twist on two excellent styles. Attending my first Master Class with the Instructor Sandra Harnes I was immediately hooked. Sweating buckets, I could feel my legs working overtime. As a full time dance fitness instructor my legs can take a battering but I could feel the burn in my calves, thighs, and butt. It was funky and fierce and a challenge encompassing the step into basic Salsa, Cumbia and Reggaeton steps; it was hard work but in a good way. On Saturday 8th February instructors Lucy, Nicola and I launched Zumba® Step at the Virgin Active Parrs Wood complex to a packed out class of Zumba® and step lovers eager to see how the two combined. The energy was brilliant. Everyone was sweating their socks off whilst smiling ear-to-ear, the feedback was an instant love for the new class format and classes are expected to sell out across the country. You may say that as one of the lucky ones to be the first to teach the class I am somewhat biased but go find a class local to you and get involved. You will not regret it! As with all Zumba® classes, Zumba Step is the kind of workout that will find you having so much fun you that forget you’ve been working your butt off… literally!

an Angry

One day a student in my year group approached me and asked to speak to me privately. This girl, student M, was a lovely girl so I wasn’t worried. She sat down with her friend next to her and proceeded to tell me that two nights ago student M had taken numerous packets of Paracetemol in an attempt to end her life. The student was a pretty and popular ‘A’ student who already had acceptances from good colleges in the area for further education.

Who’s

to

blame?

The Daily Mirror recently stated that 4,391 children aged 10 or under have received treatment for stress, anxiety or depression in the last five years. Also, the Office for National Statistics stated that, in 2004, 1 in 10 children had suffered from a mental illness. If this is a shock to you, recognise that you’re normal. Children do not talk. Teenagers give a grunt when happy or sad and give cuddles when they want money. Simply put, it is everyone and no one’s fault. We, as a community of teachers, parents and guardians put pressure on our children to achieve to a level that can often be beyond their capabilities. We as a community place so much emphasis on what we look like; we buy magazines that tell us we are fat and do not look good which, in turn, spurs the magazine owners on to do more of the same and so sell more papers. My advice is to make sure that your child has someone that they can talk to; it may not be you but let that be ok. If something scares you get help. You are not a bad parent and, statistically, your child is ‘normal’. Our job is to remind them that they are great the way they are. Their successes and even their shortcomings are what make them God’s unique gift to the world and we love them enough to care.

‘Prince’ Rapid looking to keep the grime torch burning – ‘Turning Point’ EP out this month!

If like me when growing up you were a grime kid then you’ll know about Ruff Sqwad. Shoulder-to-shoulder with Roll Deep, Meridian and Nasty Crew, Ruff Sqwad can be seen as original grime pioneers. Even those unfamiliar with grime will have no doubt heard of Tinchy Stryder – the pint-sized, Ghanaian-born MC from Bow, East London – poached by Wiley from Ruff Sqwad before his voice had even broken to become part of the holy Roll Deep empire that swept away all in its path. The meteoric rise of Tinchy – now coCEO of Takeover Roc Nation alongside Jay-Z – is obvious, but for so long other members of the cult-collective have been overlooked. Just like Slix, Dirty Danger and Roachee from the ‘supergroup’, attempting to carve his own path in the music biz is Rapid. The man responsible for some of the weightiest Ruff Sqwad cuts – like the ‘Underground’ instrumental, not to mention beats and bars from the iconic ‘Guns and Roses’ LPs – is ready to drop his fresh EP, ‘Turning Point’, on March TNT has been nominated for the ‘Diverse Company of the Year’ Award! The annual National Diversity Awards, launched in 2012, honours positive role models, entrepreneurs and community organisations within the equality and diversity sector and is to be hosted later this year in September. About Last Night, released on Valentine’s Day and starring Kevin Hart, Michael Ealy, Regina Hall and Joy Bryant, is a Hollywood re-make of the 1986 original starring Demi Moore and Rob Lowe. Needless to say they’re very different; this is by far the better version while still keeping elements of the original but with a comical theme. Kevin Hart and Regina Hall are hilarious together and Hart makes you laugh even when saying nothing… definitely a feel good movie. Bernie, played by Kevin Hart, who hooked up with a girl ‘last night’, gets all hot n’ heavy in some very comical scenes. The following night he goes to the bar and meets up with Danny played by the gorgeous Michael Ealy. There Hart, in hilarious graphic detail, reveals details about his sexual antics

About to tour with Future Brown (aka Fatima Al Qadiri, Nguzunguzu and Lit City Trax’s J-Cush), Rapid told TNT: “I’ve been doing music for over ten years now. I’ve produced, rapped, and more recently sung on more tracks than you could imagine. I’ve experimented with different sounds, I’ve made singles, I’ve made mixtapes.” Now undisputed grime royalty, ‘Prince’ Rapid, is ready to show and prove. The release features grime elites like Ghettz, Tinchy and JME – keeping the Nasty/Roll Deep/Meridian connection in full effect – alongside other affiliates of the Ruff Sqwad extended family. All seven tracks highlight the maturity of Rapid’s flow and productions. In particular, ‘Prince’ is tight from top to bottom. The collabos involved in ‘Yesterday’ will grab attention and the big beat of ‘My Lady’ will be seeing plenty of club play. In his own words: “Now, I’m ready to show the world me, my growth and who I’ve become.”

Facebook to Acquire WhatsApp Social media network Facebook is to purchase the instant messaging app, WhatsApp, in an astonishing $19bn acquisition.

It will mark Facebook’s major procurement, surpassing its previous attainment of online photo-sharing service, Instagram, which was bought for $1bn in 2012. WhatsApp Messenger, a style of online communication customised for smartphones, has around 450 million regular users a month. It also allows users to

The transaction will result in the online social networking service paying $4bn in cash and almost $12 billion value of its Facebook shares. Tax More

Google has claimed that the foreign tax bill received, declaring its sales within Britain as its most dominant, increased abruptly in 2013. Records identified as belonging to Google show that Britain, its prime overseas market contributor, acquired a record $5.64 billion tax bill increase. The American multinational corporation reported in its 10-K Annual Report that its foreign tax bill, comprising suspended taxes for 2013, totalled $743 million; this was in stark contrast to 2012 when the tax rate on overseas revenue was 8.6 per cent. It is reported that Google only exceeds

RISES sales figures in the British market, provoking disapproval from politicians due to the inconsistency between the company’s high UK revenues and low tax bill. Google has addressed this issue claiming that it conforms to the tax rules of all the countries it operates in.

The corporation received 60 per cent of its takings beyond America the previous year, yet overseas sales were just 55 per cent of its revenue. Nonetheless, Google’s tax rate outside of the United States has increased slightly. Refusing to say why or how this has come about, it is reported that the corporation’s growing sales in developing markets could be a reason. Last year Google’s total revenue increase was reduced to 19 per cent from 32 per cent in 2012.

Admittedly, it is about this time of the year when the post-Christmas enthusiasm for dieting, healthy eating and the thrice-weekly spinning class starts to fade. Nonetheless, one puzzle for health professionals and governments is why obesity rates are rising during a period when the global focus on weight-related health matters has seemingly never been more intense? In the UK the incidence of obesity, formally defined as having a Body Mass Index (BMI) of over 30, has risen from around 15% in 1993, to 25% today.

The tax sounds alluring when set against the consensus view that rising calorie intake is the reason for climbing UK weight levels. But recent research from economists at the Institute for Fiscal Studies (IFS), based on three decades of data on food and drink spending, should provoke some scepticism.

These results suggest that the increase in domestic obesity reflects a significant decline in physical exertion at work, home and play. We may be jogging and spinning more but these activities may not compensate for fewer yards of walking to work, school, the corner shop, bus stop or train station. While taxing sugary drinks would undoubtedly help the Chancellor’s sums, a better policy, in health terms, might be aimed at subsidising opportunities for exercise. So George, how about including a tax break on both gym membership and usage in this month’s Budget!

The IFS found that, on average, we are purchasing around 22% fewer calories than we were in 1980. This is despite the fact that there has been a shift away from meals prepared at home to eating out at restaurants, takeaways and snacking on the road, especially among singles and lone-parent families. Home-based calories, which accounted for 84% of our daily intake 30 years ago are now only responsible for 70%. But the key point is that the calories bought outside have been more than offset by those lost indoors. TnT Jonathan Thomas

The End is Nigh for Manchester United’s veteran defender, Nemanja Vidić, has confirmed that he will leave the English giants as soon as his contract expires this summer.

FLOYD TOYS WITH

Boxing sensation Floyd Mayweather Jr. has started the mind games with Bolton’s Amir Khan in the lead up to their eagerly awaited boxing clash.

The Serbian international has endured a difficult time of late. Having been hampered by injuries and poor form he decided to call it a day with the club he supported as a child. It will be an emotional farewell as Vidić was seen by many as one of the catalysts for United’s past successes under the tutelage of legendary manager, Sir Alex Ferguson. However, under new boss David Moyes the centre-back has had a difficult season resulting in the player seeking a fresh challenge and pastures anew. The former Spartak Moscow player led the Red Devils to a host of major honours including five Premier League titles and

the 2007-08 UEFA Champions League in Moscow. After eight years of playing for the Old Trafford outfit, Vidić stated: ‘‘I’m not considering staying in England as the only club I ever wanted to play for here is Manchester United.” The race for the renowned stopper’s signature is awaited as a host of European clubs are currently battling it out to strike a deal to sign Vidić. Spanish heavyweights Barcelona and Real Madrid had been linked with the celebrated defender however it seems Italian side, Inter Milan have won the race for the Serbian’s signature. TnT

Pellegrini’s City Revenge

Only 12 days earlier Man City had been humbled at home by Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea, in a 1-0 home defeat, that stopped City from scoring at home for the first time all season. With that defeat a lot of pressure was heaped on Manuel Pellegrini and his team as they followed it up with a disappointing 0-0 draw away at struggling Norwich. So on Saturday evening undoubtedly the biggest match of the weekend was taking place at the Etihad Stadium between City and Chelsea for a place in the quarter-final of the FA Cup. Speaking to FA Cup-winner and former City and Chelsea star Terry Phelan before the match he said, “it will be tight, there will be only one goal in it.” He also stated that, “City would be more fired-up as they’d only lost to them 12 days ago.”

The game started with City pressing high up the pitch in packs, winning the ball then playing their stuff through creator and chief, David Silva, being finished off clinically by Stefan Jovetic. This carried on in the second half with Samir Nasri coming on from a 7-week layoff; he was also supplied by David Silva to make it 2-0 and game over. Chelsea didn’t have a shot on target in the 90 minutes, with Jose Mourinho coming out after the match and saying “they [City] was good, we [Chelsea] was bad.” Terry Phelan said after the game, “I knew Man City would up the ante today… plus we had more guile than them.” City was just too good for the Londoners and it could have been three or four-nil by the end.

‘Money’ Mayweather is seeking a new opponent for his May 3rd bout in Las Vegas and has asked his devoted fans to choose his next fight for him, a move that has sparked controversy throughout the boxing world. On Twitter the pound-forpound king invited his fans to pick from Britain’s former two-time world champion, Amir Khan, or current WBA Welterweight champion, Marcos Maidana. The Twitter world went crazy as the fans

eventually voted for five-division world champion, ‘Pretty Boy’ Floyd, to fight Bolton’s Amir Khan. This incited many to argue that Mayweather was trying to get under Khan’s skin as boxing purists felt that Khan would be Floyd’s next opponent regardless of who triumphed in the Twitter poll. Khan, British silver Olympic boxing medallist, reportedly had an edge over his Argentinian counterpart, Maidana, in

collecting almost 60 per cent of the votes on the online social network; he went on to challenge the lineal champion, Mayweather, to keep his word and fight him. The motive for Khan in landing a fight against the American superstar and future Hall of Famer is that the showdown could generate as much as $200 million and smash all Box Office pay-per-views.

Sir Tom Finney

PNE’s Plumbing Legend

It was 1922 on the 5th of April, a street away from Preston North End’s (PNE) Deepdale Stadium, when a certain Thomas Finney was born to Alfred and Margaret Finney. As a youngster, because of various illnesses, he was a slight figure but with this stature came advantages on the football pitch such as low centre of gravity, lightning acceleration, quick feet and a powerful shot. But as soon as Sir Tom had signed his professional papers in 1942 he was called up by the army to serve in the Second World War and was posted in Egypt and Italy where he served his country. As soon as the war had finished in 1945 Sir Tom was ready to return to his beloved Preston but his father made him complete an apprenticeship in the family’s plumbing trade so he had something to fall back on. Thus, he was called the ‘Preston Plumber’. Sir Tom was so good at the sport that 28 days after making his League debut for Preston he was making his England debut in Belfast, scoring one goal in 7-2 victory. Finney said, “it was his proudest day as a footballer.” If Sir Tom was playing in this era he would be on par

with the likes of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo he was that good, but he refused to go to any other club choosing instead to stay with Preston North End throughout his career. There he made 433 appearances scoring 187 goals whilst for England he made 76 appearances and scored 30 goals thereby placing him on the all-time list with Alan Shearer and Nat Lofthouse. He won 76 caps for England and was also the first player to win Footballer of the Year twice. Finney was also much revered for his down-to-earth character and nature; he was such a gentleman, as Dave Whelan the current Wigan Chairman revealed. In Dave’s first match after having broken his leg he was given the gigantic task of marking Sir Tom but Finney humbly said, “you’ve had some bad luck son, and I’m not going to take you on, I want you to get through today’s game and get back into the first team.” Sir Tom Finney retired from the game in 1960. He was appointed an OBE a year later in 1961 and was knighted in 1998. His recent death, aged 91, caused a massive outpour of tributes for the man said to have probably “died without an enemy

in the world.” A civil funeral planned for February 27 will be a sad day for Prestonians and the footballing world at large. The public affair will see a huge turnout for the never-to-be-forgotten Finney who was undoubtedly England’s most loyal and greatest footballer ever to win silverware the likes of which may never be seen again. In his honour, Preston North End erected a statue of him sliding through splashing water, perhaps reminiscent of his iconic play at water-logged Stamford Bridge back in 1956. A photograph of the scene was chosen as Sports Photograph of the Year for 1956.
