SELMA JAMES

B

y a huge twist of fate, Selma James was attending an International Women’s Week conference and was able, when asked by the Save Nello James campaigners, to attend the historical Nello James Centre on Withington Road, Whalley Range, Manchester on Saturday 21 March.

Selma – the wife of CLR James, who the centre is named after – visited the beleaguered but much-loved former community centre to show her support to this worthy cause and was overwhelmed by the love and latent community spirit. To mark this memorable moment in the community’s history, an apple tree was planted on the land at the back of

the Centre. Selma James was noticeably touched by the response and local community interaction, particularly after a poem was recited to her by a passionate campaigner.

Also in attendance were councillors Angeliki Stogia and Aftab Razaq who told TNT News they would happily give their time and full backing to see the Nello James Centre restored to its former glory and still able to be used by the community.

An intimate gathering of campaigners Ms Stogia – who has lived in Whalley and the local media met at the Millenium for over ten Windrush Centre, “Where were the councillors Range years – said, “I’ve Alexandra Road, at the beginning? Whilst there, Selma made a moving A male onlooker stated, “Where were the pledge to help in any way possible and councillors at the beginning? went up in February despite it having allegedly been given to the community for public use when actress Vanessa Redgrave bequeathed it to CLR James. Selma James gave TNT News some exclusive information, confirming that Vanessa Redgrave and her husband were indeed friends but unfortunately she herself had no access to any official paperwork confirming the donation. She did, however, reveal that Darcus Howe is a relative of her late husband and so he may hold more information. The Nubian Times has contacted Mr Howe and is currently awaiting his response. The Nubian Times decided to do our bit and joined forces last month with Operation Black Vote and the British Chinese Project to encourage you all to vote. Lots of love and respect to Selma James, who came to lend her support to the worthy Save Nello James campaign, for honouring Manchester and highlighting this ongoing issue. TNT thought it fitting that this plight be on our front page for all the hard work put in by all the campaigners; your efforts have not gone unnoticed! We at TNT salute you. he Prostate Cancer Campaign in Manchester has made it difficult to ignore the taboo, private, and difficult topic of prostate cancer. Hopefully the recent influx of information, including the shocking statistic that twice as many black men are likely to have prostate cancer as their white counterparts, will reduce the amount of cases. Prostate cancer isn’t something that affects just men; their wives, siblings and children all have to deal with the devastating effects the disease can have, especially if it isn’t caught early. The Men United event at Central Library attended by TNT Local is just one of the many campaigns around the UK aimed at black men and their families in the hope of raising awareness of the cancer. The examination is over quicker than you can read your copy of The Nubian Times, so go get checked today.

We’re growing! Eastlands Homes and City South Manchester Housing Trust will be joining together on 1 April to form a new partnership that will provide 12,000 affordable homes in central, east and south Manchester. The new group will be known as ‘One Manchester’ and will provide greater social investment, innovation and deliver efficiencies in housing services to new and existing customers. Eastlands Homes and City South are two likeminded organisations that have achieved a lot since they were established in 2003 and 2008 respectively. They are now joining together to build on the strengths of both organisations to meet the changing needs of the city of Manchester and its residents. As One Manchester, they will combine their wealth of experience, expertise and resources to provide improved, expanded and better value services.

One Manchester has also opened a new one stop shop for employment in the heart of east Manchester called East Hub which will provide employment and enterprise services for customers and residents, allowing people to build skills, raise aspirations and achieve sustainable employment to further career development. East Hub is based at Belle Vue House, 27 Garratt Way, Gorton, M18 8HE close to Hyde Road with excellent transport links. It will be open for ‘drop in’ three days per week on Monday, Tuesday and Friday from 10am-3pm.

To celebrate the launch of One Manchester the group is offering a helping hand to local groups through a Community Fund. Over the next five years there will be £500,000 available for grassroots organisations, with £100,000 available in the first year of funding. Donations will be awarded to those organisations in Eastlands Homes’ and City South’s areas that can demonstrate that their work is making a change happen in their community.

OPERATION BLACK VOTE GENERAL ELECTION: MAY 7

Voting tour bus arrives in Manchester “ TNT

s part of the ‘Reclaim Democracy’ campaign, the collaborative tour for the Manchester leg of Operation Black Vote (OBV), joined TNT and the British Chinese Project (BCP) in Manchester last month. The aim: to register as many people – particularly students and Manchester’s diverse communities – onto the electoral roll as possible. Externally it seems like an ordinary bus, but the OBV tour bus has computers on board with internet access, lending ease and convenience to registered voters.

Across the UK, there are 7.5 million people who aren’t registered to vote and alarmingly in Manchester, huge numbers have fallen off the electoral register in recent months. In Gorton, Manchester 4,283 people have dropped off the register whilst 1,390 have dropped

“Manchester is tough. People are cynical about the extent of the change their vote will make” from Moss Side’s electorate since the previous elections. The total registrations in Hulme amount to 12,645: a 445 drop from the previous figure. A spokesman for Manchester City Council said: “National research shows

that members of ethnic minorities and students, as well as people who have moved homes recently, are among the groups most likely to be under-registered.” “We’re hoping to register as many people in Manchester, as we can,” OBV’s commercial director Paul Hensby told TNT. Political activist Lee Jasper left passers-by in fits of giggles as he warmly encouraged them to make their voices heard this May. “Manchester is tough. People are cynical about the extent of the change their vote will make,” Jasper later told TNT.

don’t like to shatter children’s dreams but I do have a responsibility to give them the truth. I asked my GCSE class: “If you trained harder than Usain Bolt, could you be as fast as him?” 90% of the class thought it possible. When asked again at the end, only two hands went up – I gave them detentions for failing to pay attention. And yet as a society we believe that if we raise our expectations and work ethic we can make the next generation smarter? The education minister is making GCSE’s harder in an attempt to make Britain’s young sparks brighter. GCSE’s are to be made more difficult with the inclusion of questions normally reserved for older students. This will supposedly ‘stretch’ students to reach their full potential, as apparently there is too large a proportion achieving A’s and A*’s. As per usual in politics, on paper it looks good but it’s not so simple in reality. Creating more opportunities for our most gifted students is great but asking all students to reach those heights is unrealistic and may put unnecessary stress on other students. Students do not struggle with exams because they are too easy. Race, gender and other socio-economic factors certainly have not been taken into account in the making of this decision. I suggest that GCSEs be kept as they are but that more difficult papers be made available for those who are more able. You wouldn’t set an Olympic sprinter against an amateur after all! You create an opportunity for novices to succeed, nurture their sense of achievement and then stage an elite race for those who will one day compete against the best in the world.

Tackling Child Sex Exploitation

A

Albion Academy in Salford has become the first to receive CSE Ambassador status for their commitment to tackling child sexual exploitation. The new CSE Ambassador initiative, launched Monday 23 March 2015 seeks to award Greater Manchester high schools for their contribution to CSE awareness. Following lessons, pupils developed a three minute video about child sexual exploitation featuring staff and students promoting key messages relating to the ‘It’s Not Okay’ campaign. Albion pupils designed, filmed and edited the footage directly from their classroom.

In the Scottish Referendum history was made when 16 and 17 year-olds were allowed to vote. This was thought up by The Scottish National Party (SNP) who has now expanded the idea and proposed that teens be allowed to vote in all elections; this is backed by Labour and the Liberal Democrats. The argument is that the voting age should be lowered to 16 so that teens can have a say in how the country is run, thus increasing their engagement with politics. It worked in the Scottish Referendum so why should it not work in the rest of Britain? However, when I asked my friends whether they would vote if given the chance most of them said that they would not. They

n this technology-dependent, Instagra`lection and refining of certain photos or statuses that conjures an appearance that is all too often very different from reality. Psychotherapist, Michael J Formica describes a “false intimacy and social distance” that is often present in relationships by the involvement of social media and the pressure it exerts on young people today. Our newsfeeds are constantly bombarded with exuberant displays of devotion, which although isn’t a bad thing in itself, it reaches a certain point where it becomes about having a relationship for the sake of personal image. This is the result of the desire to have the ‘perfect’ relationship (otherwise known as ‘bae goals’) that we see online. Increasingly we find young people confessing their love and admiration for someone for the first time in a Facebook post; and as my school-friend described it, “We are treating the most intimate part of our lives as public property”. When these intimate feelings are placed online it makes people very vulnerable and leaves the relationship susceptible to distortion.

Personally I think that if teens are old enough to have jobs and children they should be old enough to vote too.

Conjunctivitis

C

onjunctivitis is a common condition that causes redness and inflammation of the thin layer that covers the front of the eye. This can happen for a number of reasons:

Bacterial or Viral infection (infective conjunctivitis) Allergic reaction to a substance such as pollen or dust mites (allergic conjunctivitis) Contact with substances that can irritate the conjunctiva, such as chlorinated water or shampoo, or a loose eyelash rubbing against the eye (irritant conjunctivitis) Two of the main symptoms of all kinds of conjunctivitis include eye redness and watering eyes, and even though one eye is usually affected first, both eyes can display symptoms. With infective conjunctivitis other symptoms include a feeling of grit in the eyes and a sticky coating on the eyelashes. Type of treatment will depend on the cause of the condition, and in severe cases antibiotic eye drops can be used to clear the infection

(these can be purchased over the counter from your local pharmacy), although conjunctivitis can clear up on its own, usually within a couple of weeks. Irritant conjunctivitis will clear as soon as the irritant is removed. Allergic conjunctivitis can usually be cleared with anti-allergy medications such as antihistamines, and if possible the substance that has caused the allergy should be avoided. It’s best to avoid wearing contact lenses until the symptoms have cleared, and any sticky or crusty coating on the eyelids or lashes can be cleansed with cotton wool and water. Other tips include washing your hands regularly and avoiding sharing pillows to prevent it spreading. In the case of any eye pain, sensitivity to light, disturbed vision or if a new born baby contracts conjunctivitis, then a GP should be consulted. Public Health England advises that you do not need to stay away from work or school if you or your child has conjunctivitis unless you are feeling particularly unwell. If you need any more information, then visit your local pharmacy and the team will be happy to give you some help and advice.

“THE REAL SOUND OF THE CITY”

ONES TO WATCH: T

NT News spent a few weeks following actor and director Marcquelle Jermaine Ward around as he created his new hit film My House Party.

Here we introduce to you our Ones to Watch, all of whom feature in the film. This talented bunch are sure to be winning Oscars in the next few years, watch this space!

ANDRE BURTON

MISHA TIMMINS

G

ymanastics teacher Misha Timmins plays the lead female, Rita, in My House Party. Like the others, Misha has known Marcquelle for years and could relate to the script. “Working with Marcquelle was sooo much fun! Professional, exciting and comfortable. I’m all ready for My House Party 2!” says Misha. A self-confessed ‘drama queen’, this Arts Educational graduate considers herself “very lucky” to be getting work from her passion, for which she is “extremely grateful.”

My House Party is a comedy about two best friends are in love but are the only two people who can’t see it, until things change at a house party that is. Read more at thenubiantimes.com

M

anchester-born Andre grew up loving the performing arts. After moving to London at the age of five he became a dancer in his late teens touring with Billy Crawford, Jamelia and Shola Ama, just to name a few. He also featured in music videos for the likes of Five, Cleopatra and Hanson. Andre started acting in his early twenties and was cast for a role in Diamond Stones St Opera from which point it has been onwards and upwards ever since. What was your role? I played the character Timmi, one of the four friends to Chris. What made you say yes to working on this script? The whole concept and comical aspect is what really drew me to this script. I love to laugh and make people laugh also. What is working with Marcquelle like? Working with Marcquelle was really fun but also very professional. There was great food on set! Would you work with him again in the future? I would definitely work with him again. I met some great people on set and made some new friends.

#MY HOUSE PARTY MARVIN HENRIQUES

F

ormer RADA pupil Marvin made his on-screen debut in a Danny Boyle directed BBC Film and has gone on to perform in various theatres in Manchester including the John Cooper Clarke Theatre, Z-Arts and Contact Theatre.

He has also had various film and TV roles, featuring in the likes of Screwed, Britain’s Biggest Heist and Prisoners’ Wives. In My House Party Marvin plays Rob who tries it on with Natasha at the house party after having liked her for a very long time. But the course of love never runs smoothly and Rob completely messes up the situation. Has he blown it with Natasha forever? “I read the script, enjoyed the humour, enjoyed the rapport between Rob, Chris and the rest of the guys and thought the overall story was relevant to our society and circle of friends,” said Marvin, “I’ve known Marcquelle for a long time and class him as a very good friend. We have worked on several projects together and it has been a pleasure and an experience each and every time so taking that into consideration, plus the script and terrific cast, it was a no-brainer!”

BENJI TAYLOR

U

p and coming actor Benji Taylor, 24, took on the role of Pete. Originally from the Midlands, Benji decided to move up north and follow his acting career, leaving everything else behind.

The move turned out to be the right decision and Benji has made regular appearances on a few northern-based productions since.

After meeting Benji at a party and building a relationship via Twitter, Marcquelle turned to Benji at the last minute after being let down by another actor and a few hours later they were on set. “It was the funnest production I’ve ever had the privilege to be a part of and even after a short time filming, I feel like I have made good new friends, Marcquelle being one of them. I would love to work with any of the people involved again,” said Benji about working on My House Party.

RYAN LEVER

B

ury-born Ryan, whose father Roy is well known in the RC Model World, has worked all over the UK in film, TV and theatre in productions such as Shameless, Fresh Meat and Fast & Furious 6.

He has worked extensively across the industry on both sides of the lens and in the theatre, usually capitalising on his physical image and taking on such roles as the ‘fat man’ and ‘food lover’. His favourite role to date has been as “Bernie”, a guy who loves his food, in a short film called Hotpots. Ahead of a top secret project that involves working in Morocco for five weeks, Ryan worked with Marcquelle on My House Party after they met on the set of Manchester-based Channel 4 show Banana. “Marcquelle needed a fat man and so who are you going to pick? Me of course! “I hope to work with Marcquelle on future projects; My House Party was a great experience.”

as the huge intervening shifts in global spending power tilts firms towards the new centres of economic gravity. Consequently, hitherto fairly innocuous developments, such as movements in the pound against the currencies of our main trading partners are more important drivers of FTSE profitability than domestic incomes or budget-day proclamations.

Increasing dependence of UK-listed businesses on the rest of the world forms a cute counterpoint to the government’s promise of reducing net UK migration. This pledge has been blown apart by recent data indicating that net inflows rose by 42% in the year to last September, reaching nearly 300,000. The key driver of the increase is the growing demand for foreign-born workers by UK companies who are increasingly dependent on international clients. A sensible option would be to silently retreat from a policy which is essentially unenforceable and harms UK economic fortunes. But instead the main government partner is set to maintain the pledge in order to shore up its political fortunes while talking up a stock market index which is anything but home-grown.
