WITHOUT FAMILY MEANS NOTHING” C hristmas has officially arrived in Manchester as the award-winning Christmas Markets have returned to the city for its sixteenth year, transforming it into a winter wonderland.
The markets offer a wide range of souvenirs, Christmas decorations, gifts and jewellery and there is something for every taste – from German beer and French wine to Dutch mini pancakes and Spanish paella. However, have you ever wondered
what a homeless person would buy if he had the money to go to the Christmas markets? Would he spend the money or would he keep it?
A social experiment called “Christmas through the eyes of the homeless” aims to open people’s eyes for things that truly matter in life and make them appreciate what they have before they lose it. This is the message from 56 year-old Keith Brintwater who has been living on the streets of Manchester for more than six years.
The former firework maker has not seen his three daughters since he got divorced in 1999.
He said: “I am lonely. I lost everything – my children, my wife, my life. Life on the streets is hard. I have no plans for the future. I do not think about tomorrow. I have to survive day in, day out.“ Keith went to Albert Square with a fixed budget of £10 and little festive cheer. Christmas was “just an ordinary day”. He said: “The best Christmas present would be to see my family. Christmas
without family means nothing.”
A “very expensive” German sausage for £4.50 was all that Keith wanted to buy from the Christmas markets. “People spend too much money on Christmas. Life is not just shopping.” He added that the best thing about the markets was to see children’s faces. Spare a thought for the city’s growing number of homeless this Christmas; Merry Christmas from TNT.

Ok everyone you should all know the drill by now. MERRY CHRISTMAS to you all and a prosperous NEW YEAR! I love this time of year and there has been nothing short of TNT love up in our press office and media suite. Moving on to our interns, a special hug to the University of Salford for brilliant students who have all shown great promise and who want to stay on at TNT. Showing the love peeps, I’m feeling you! Let’s all give a warm welcome to columnist Tony Lloyd and his Police Crime Commissioner column on Page 3 which gives us all the opportunity to ask Tony some serious questions; send yours to: info@thenubiantimes.com. This month is an introduction to his role and next month the topic will be on STOP AND SEARCH! Make it understood, the TNT family have been as upset, outraged and cynical about the state of play regarding local issues and current affairs and personally I have come to these conclusions: • Michael Brown verdict – total and utter dismay. It’s a travesty of justice • The freak weather in New York – the government and emergency services look lost and bewildered. We need to better safeguard ourselves againast a chagning climate • The increase in families in Manchester having to use food banks – England is not a third world country, this is a

joke. Start looking after your nation, NHS service, housing and check the banks and banking sector as right now they’re running the show. Austerity sucks!
Me and my partner have been together for well over ten years and are still living in separate houses but with a joint bank account for our holidays, cars and social life.
• Homelessness in Manchester – TNT has been shocked by the scale and effects of homelessness, and the attempts made to ‘curb’ the effects on shoppers and visitors, rather than homelessness itself
Every Christmas we always go to my mother’s for Xmas dinner and for New Year, we have a great time but in all this time his mother and family have never asked me to dinner over the festive season. I have dined in the week with a tray on my lap with the whole family but that’s it.
Voting has an important part to play in all our futures, especially the young; you all need to take note. It’s not enough to say: ‘Well they’re not doing anything for me anyway’ because, trust me, they are. Hold those in power accountable and always ask questions, don’t be just another statistic. Fight for your right for a better future where we all are treated equally and owning your own property or car is the norm and not a birth right for just the wealthy. The Nubian Times will be organising some events to get the community youth and seniors to register to vote and tell these parties exactly what we want from them, not what they think we need. You can vote for whoever you see fit! TNT isn’t here to judge, just do it! Anyway enough of me venting, get some Christmas cheer and love from family and friends and if anyone’s on their own take them round of plate of love disguised as Christmas dinnerdon’t forget the cranberry sauce and glass of wine! Tweet me your Christmas dinners @TNTEditor_Chief
Please help me I’m frustrated and not sure what this means as I have asked my partner and he says not to worry. Joan Hi Joan, Let me be frank here, you don’t get Xmas dinner because she doesn’t like you! Nor does she think you are wife material and to be quite frank neither does your partner as he has not yet (as Beyoncé would say ) ‘put a ring on it’ after ten years. Research shows that if a man doesn’t propose within the first 18 months or thereabouts, it is not happening (this is a general analysis). It looks to me like Xmas dinner could be the least of your worries. My advice: ask him outright ‘where is this relationship going?’ and if he wants you, he will tell you. If, on the other hand, he says ‘baby we’re fine’, then do you want a man that can’t commit? If he says no, then move on; there’ll be another bus that will come along and they always come in twos.

ASK TONY LLOYD GMPCC Let me start by saying what a pleasure it is to have a new monthly column in The Nubian Times. There is much debate about the role of Police and Crime Commissioners and some people are still in the dark about what we actually do. So let me begin with a brief introduction.
“We will ensure that GPs’ surgeries are open at least one evening per week, where there is demand for it.” “UKIP opposes plans to charge patients for visiting their GP.” “We will replace Monitor and the Care Quality Commission with elected county health boards to be more responsive scrutineers of local health services. “We will guarantee that you can get a GP appointment within 48 hours – and on the same day for those who need it.”
“Introducing the first ever cap on the cost of social care, so people don’t have to sell their home to pay for their care.”
“We will give people the right to book an appointment more than 48 hours ahead with the GP of their choice. This is particularly important for people with complex needs who need continuity of care with the same doctor, but may not want an appointment straight away.”
“Crisis Care Concordat: Making sure no one experiencing mental health crisis is ever turned away from services.” “Choice in Mental Health: Giving people the same choice for their mental healthcare as they do for their physical health.”
Labour Party leader Ed Miliband:
“Liaison and Diversion: Committed £25m for a scheme that identifies health issues offenders when they enter the criminal justice system.”
“We are going to have to transform the way the NHS works in the years ahead.”
B A p A : policing, race and Justice Conference peter Fahy: system needs changing
Chief Constable Sir Peter Fahy admitted Greater Manchester Police have wider practices that reinforce racism and some racist officers within its ranks, at the well-attended Policing, Race and Justice Conference organised by the Black and Asian Police Association (BAPA). As senior officers convened at GMP headquarters on 21 November, Fahy stated it was not about the debatable issue of whether the organisation was racist but about how those issues are confronted and dealt with. “I have to work within the legal system, which has a very ‘good vs evil’ perspective. I am trying to change that system within my own powerbase.” He cited austerity cuts and the police service’s eight rank hierarchical system as reasons for the lack of Black Minority Ethnic (BME) officers in senior positions within GMP and their disproportional employment within the service as a whole. Statistics provided by Assistant Chief Constable Gary Shewan revealed that, despite 14 per cent of the 61 million people in the UK being minority groups, only five per cent of that minority
“Christmas means a really happy time”
“Time with family and friends”
make up the police and only four per cent of GMP officers were from BME backgrounds. The issue of BME people being more likely to be stopped and searched was repeatedly raised with Manchester’s Police and Crime Commissioner, Tony Lloyd, describing it as “probably the single biggest issue creating distrust towards police in communities.” Shewan agreed, saying: “If you do not understand the impact stop and search has on the BME community then you do not deserve to be a police officer.” The Terrorism Act 2000 Section 7 has also seen a rise in racial profiling with a number of Asians stopped at airports under the law where an offer’s reasonable suspicion that someone is involved in terrorism prior to stopping them is not required. Lloyd highlighted improvements that have been made including
BME mentors, ethics groups, stop and searches now requiring validation before being executed and that 40% of PCSOs and GMP apprentices were from BME backgrounds. But BAPA Chair Paul Bailey said: “Fifteen years on and we are not making any progress. BAPA will still be here in fifteen years’ time unless there is a serious sea of change and there will still be people fighting for fairness and equality.” BAPA is a support network for Black and Asian Police officers that aims to improve working environments for GMP employees. Under the BME 2018 Progression Programme, 17,000 BME officers will need to be recruited by 2024 meaning GMP will need to step up, with it only recruiting 300 BME officers in the last five years.

Working at Francis Hospice this Christmas
My primary duty is to represent you when holding the Chief Constable to account and making sure that Greater Manchester Police is doing its job properly. To build trust and confidence, a modern police service should operate at the heart of local neighbourhoods, working alongside local people and organisations to deliver safer places to live, work and socialise. Greater Manchester Police has had issues in the past with its relationship with BME communities, but the service has made major improvements in recent years. For example, 39 per cent of the most recent intake of PCSOs and 40 per cent of new apprentices are from BME backgrounds. This shows the journey GMP is on, and demonstrates the service is heading in the right direction. Scrutinising and challenging the police is an important part of what I do, but fundamentally my role is about making our communities safer and ensuring the protection of all Greater Manchester residents, particularly the most vulnerable. Finally, as we approach the festive season, can I wish you all a very merry Christmas and hope you have a safe and enjoyable holiday season. I hope this will be the start of a conversation about policing, crime or community safety issues and concerns that you may have. If you would like me to answer specific questions in a future column, please email info@thenubiantimes.com or tweet me at @GMPCC

The class could be described as a typically multicultural mix of students with a good cross section of age and gender. As I was speaking with some of the students after the lecture on police powers to stop and search, I took the opportunity to chat with some of the students from abroad - Finland, Spain and other places. It was clear to me that the multicultural nature of my surroundings was not incidental to the programme but actually these students were soaking up the environment, particularly the local Moss Side and Hulme community, as an integral aspect of their university experience. It struck me that whether we think it’s a good thing or not, this is the new order created by freedom of movement around the European Union. Many of the African Caribbean community long settled in the 50s and 60s would instinctively find common cause with new migrants; our journey has been a long and painful one and the context of the lecture I delivered called attention to some of the historical context of young black people’s experiences in the UK. The world is truly in our community and whilst some indeed find this challenging, others see opportunity in terms of the economic aspect. After all, money is money regardless of who is spending it and if you are open for business you can reap the benefits of diversity. If, on the other hand, you are not open for business you will inevitably be consigned to the role of either consumer or indeed ‘the product’. The good news is that at The Nubian Times’ Black Men Inspire event held in Manchester I saw and heard examples of well educated and enterprising young men and women making their way in business within the local community. I notice also ‘Enterprise Day’ events cropping up in the local community, this is very encouraging.

The police picked me up and I was sent to a juvenile lock-up, it was a nasty place with people getting abused.

Then my Mrs. had a stroke and I went to prison. It was my own fault, I admit that, but my two kids live in Bolton and I see them on supervised visits because of my family’s record.” “I have 3 daughters, one is 25, one 17 and one 12. The National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) has awarded a team led by Dr Dawn Edge, a Senior Lecturer at The University of Manchester and researcher for Manchester Mental Health and Social Care Trust; a £350,000 Health Services and Delivery Research (HS&DR) grant to develop a new form of ‘talking therapy’ for African-Caribbean service users diagnosed with schizophrenia and their families. It is anticipated that the three-year Culturally-adapted Family Intervention (CaFI) study will improve Caribbean people’s access to effective, evidence-based care. Dr Edge explains the importance of the research thus. “Decades of research shows it can take African-Caribbean people twice as long to access mental healthcare. They are more likely to do so through negative, coer-
tionships – especially when families involve the police in order to get help.” CaFI has now reached the end of Phase One, which involved working with African-Caribbean service users, families, carers, and community members here in Manchester to develop the therapy and agree how to measure the outcomes they consider important. Reflecting the research team’s commitment to working collaboratively with the community, service users and carers sit on the Research Management and Advisory Groups to ensure that CaFI is culturally-appropriate. This approach received the 2014 NIHR Mental Health Research Network award for ‘outstanding service user involvement’ [see photo].

Each year Black History Month goes as quickly as it comes. We tend to ‘celebrate’ and ‘remember’ the same people and events but is this enough? Now, generations are becoming more aware, more willing and better equipped with knowledge to make a change. One person who may have instigated change is Samuel King. At just 19 years old, Samuel’s latest spoken word poem “What I wasn’t taught in school” is currently doing the rounds on Youtube and other social networks. Samuel was inspired to create the poem when, during a project for Black History Month that he was a part of, he realised he didn’t know many of the black historians being mentioned. So after doing his research, in the poem Samuel name checks several notable people of colour from civil rights activist Ella Baker to news reader Sir Trevor McDonald. For the visual- set in a classroom- Samuel ends up schooling his teacher when he asks: “If this is a great opportunity to learn and be engaged about our past, why are we not actually being taught about our past?”

The meeting which was held on 14 November was used to discuss the lack of race equality within the UCU structure, but was soon abandoned as the Chairman refused to discuss the issues outlined in a paper distributed by the black attendees. It is also believed security was called and some black attendees were removed. Pandemonium erupted when Jim Thakoordin, UCU’s longest serving black member, National Executive member and spokesperson for many black members, asked the floor for time to speak on the issues outlined in a paper distributed by the black group to attendees. This defence of the chair came from his ruling which ensured that the issues highlighted on the document were not to be discussed. There are nearly 11,000 black members within the UCU representing over 10 per cent of the union membership and contributing around £1million towards the UCU annually.
The English have also had their say on these promises, many thinking that it’s unfair that Scotland should get more powers when England technically don’t have a parliament. The Scottish have many privileges that aren’t afforded to the English, such as free tuition fees and free prescriptions. Furthermore, there’s the West Lothian question where Scottish MP’s can vote on strictly English matters, like transport and healthcare. This has led to poisonous sniping between the two countries’ politicians, although at a societal level the rivalry remains friendly and not at all personal despite the violent history stretching back to the 122 CE and the building of Hadrian’s Wall. Will we be better together or should we have gone our separate ways? Maybe the bickering between the two countries is stopping them from making the life for their people more harmonious.

Twenty years after the first women were ordained as priests, it was announced last week that the Church of England had approved legislation for women to become bishops, meaning they could be ordained as early as 2015. With 1,781 full-time priests in the Church of England being women, the decision was welcomed by many, hailed as a progressive move, especially with there already being 29 female bishops worldwide. Reverend Jeanette Roberts of Ryburn Benefice, West Yorkshire hopes the Church can move forward. She said: “For some it is a decision which is painful, for others euphoric and overdue. But as we are called to move and change we travel in hope, ever striving for unity within our diversity.”
But is it tradition that is holding the promotion of women back, or do men feel uncomfortable being under women’s leadership? Alternatively, maybe women do not have the skills needed like men do or do not want to take on leadership roles? The scenario in the church mirrors that in the army. In May Defence Secretary Philip Ham-

This fixture seemed to come at the perfect time to add spice to a relationship which has been under immense scrutiny over the past few months. Sport between the two countries has always been an aggressive affair. Scotland captain Scott Brown said his team mates were “P***** off that England couldn’t give a hoot” about the ‘Auld Enemy’ clash. The Independence Referendum in Scotland in September seems to have plunged the two countries to its worst state since the union in 1707, at least on official levels. Strange then, that in August during the Commonwealth Games, when it was a very real possibility that Scotland could be independent, they gave the English team a roar of approval. After the ‘NO’ vote to independence in September, thousands of people decided to join the SNP in support of more devolution to Scotland. This is what Westminster promised the Scots and it is yet to be seen if they will come through.
Are women shunned from leadership roles?
However, the Christian group, Reform believe the “divine order of male headship” makes the endorsement of female bishops “inappropriate.”

There are now more women in the armed forces than at any other time since the end of World War Two, making up 10% of the British armed forces.
Currently women cannot apply for jobs in the Infantry, Royal Armoured Corps or Household Cavalry.
Evidently there is no shortage of courageous women in Britain’s armed forces and if Mr Hammond gets his way, as least women will have the opportunity and choice to prove themselves in all areas of life, in what could be hailed as a marker for progress. Jayna Patel
Wanting the army to lose its “macho” image, Mr Hammond maintained the gruelling fitness and psychological entrance tests would remain the same standard, but some argue he is merely being politically correct.

Kids will always find a way to be mean to each other. When I first started teaching, the preferred medium was name calling. Name calling or graffiti describing how Tunde’s head looks like a shaved gorilla, etc. However, with the advancement of technology, the means in which students can put each other down has become more accessible, anonymous and have a greater impact. Students can now comment on each other by a few clicks on their smartphone, and some topics can go viral in a matter of minutes. Cyberbullying has forced schools and MPs to take notice as it allows students to comment from anywhere. Counselling for online bullying rose by 87 per cent according to Childline. This is an increasingly worrying statistic when we consider the amount of students who keep their difficulties to themselves and are not included in this report. So what can we do to stop these recent trends? In short, nothing. If a student wants to send nasty messages on WhatsApp or set up a web page containing hurtful comments they can. However, it’s what happens before and after that stage which is important. Bullying.co.uk has much guidance on what to do when cyberbullying occurs including keeping all texts, emails etc. Also, schools will have given children guidelines on safeguarding and how students can stay safe when online. Child Exploitation Online Protection have some great videos called ‘exposed’ and ‘jigsaw’ on YouTube also. As I started, kids will always be mean to each other because childhood is filled with insecurity. The conflicting battle of children needing to be individual and yet fit in, are perfect conditions for insecure minds. The trick is educating young minds. There is no such thing as a normal person as we are all different. If students want to comment on Tunde’s head shape, Tunde can take away his bullies’ power by remembering he’s supposed to look different and that’s what makes him normal.

Women, and increasingly men, spend hours preening and perfecting, combing, curling and straightening their hair before they can even think of leaving the house in the morning. This is not a new phenomenon but with people now focusing on their appearance more than ever it seems that hair is everywhere. When you turn on the TV you are bombarded with adverts about how to make your hair shinier and thicker. strangers come up to me in the street and start touching my hair and asking me about it. If a stranger came up to you in the street and starting touching and asking you about your hat, for example, you would think their behaviour was very odd. So why is touching a strangers hair considered acceptable? I know that to some people my hair is unusual but that is not an excuse to touch it without my permission. I’m glad that you think it is interesting and will happily take compliments and questions but please don’t touch it without permission or ask stupid questions like “Is your hair naturally curly?” and “Why does your hair look like that?” In conclusion I’m perfectly okay with other people obsessing over their hair and spending ridiculous amounts on it but please consult me before dragging me into it.

LITERACY
Walking down the crowded corridors of my school, you can’t even sneeze or cough without people making remarks or laughing about the fatal disease - Ebola. Jokes about Ebola appear to be more infectious than the disease itself. However what shocked me most was my friend’s response when confronted about her jokes about Ebola “But no ones died from Ebola yet, have they?” Yes, 4500 black Africans have fallen victim to Ebola. 4500 humans have died from this horrific disease and yet we seem oblivious to it. Is this humor relevant because the danger seems so far away? Ebola was causing fatalities in West Africa long before it hit the news channels of the West. Children made orphans, wives made widows, mothers made childless. Only when this threat began to spread closer to us did it occur to Britain to panic; aren’t all lives equal? Isn’t making jokes about Ebola consequently disrespecting innocent lives that have been stolen? Maybe this humorous approach is many people’s way of coping with disaster and panic, because truthfully we’re all scared.

WORKOUT with TnT Tom Barber
With less than four weeks to go until Christmas, and only 5 weeks until the inevitable ‘healthy New Years resolutions’, why not get a head start this year... Performance & Movement Coach Tom Barber shows you how easy it can be to improve your condition based around a relatively simple body movement- the burpee. for the uninitiated, the basic burpee alone can be an extremely challenging body movement. for the more advanced, it is a corner stone exercise upon which more complex variations and advanced movements can be progressed. starting in the standing position, the burpee requires you to squat down, place your hands on the floor, thrust your feet backwards so you assume a press up position before tucking your knees towards your chest and returning to the standing position. It is a massive compound (multijoint) movement and as such, can be highly effective when used in high intensity interval or metabolic work outs (more on this in the New Year). However, to start with, you need familiarise yourself and have a go at the movement.
“It was the day Christ was born, I’m happy”
If you have mobility issues, you can modify the burpee to suit your current level of ability. for example, you can put your hands on a bench or a sofa which will make the movement easy to perform as there will be less stress on the core and legs. the video online will show you the burpee and various progressions and regressions to suit your ability. You may find stepping back with alternate legs easier to start, and then progress to jumping both legs back together. You must maintain core stability throughout. If you are struggling to do so, use a regressed version of the exercise. As a start point, complete as many burpees as feels comfortable. If you find you can perform more than 15-20 reps of a particular version, progress to a more challenging variety. Rest for a couple of minutes and aim to complete 3 sets. Work to fatigue but NOT failure. Next month I’ll teach you how to design and progress your own burpee workouts. You can find Tom on Facebook at: www.facebook.com/ authentichumanmovement

D’Angelo’s appearance at the AfroPunk festival in Brooklyn in August of this year left fans confused and somewhat disappointed when he played all new material instead of the gospel-inspired soulful tracks from his albums Brown Sugar and Voodoo. So be prepared, as this tour has been described as a “brand new show sure to introduce audiences to a new side of D’Angelo.” Aparently, D’Angelo and his band The Vanguard will combine “popular hits with new songs and fresh interpretations of covers.” With any luck, this new approach will be better received than that of fellow neo-soul pioneer Lauryn Hill, who was largely criticised for her lacklustre performance in Manchester in September. After stints in rehab and a near-fatal car crash in 2005, hopefully this tour will indeed be D’Angelo’s second coming and he will be around for a while yet.

This impressive 17-show tour could mean his (very) long-awaited third album could finally be on the cards for release. There are several rumours circulating as to why the album – allegedly completed way back in 2012 – is yet to be made public, ranging from the singer being unhappy with his body image to him giving up music entirely and going in to the family business (his father and grandfather were Pentecostal preachers). However, at 40 years old, nobody is expecting D’Angelo – real name Michael Eugene Archer – to have the rippling six-pack he had as a fresh-faced 26 year-old. Although a re-emergence of the fine specimen we were treated to in the video to hit single Untitled [How Does It Feel] would be nice, the musician could and should focus on going from being a sex symbol to a stalwart of the music business.
having gone quiet since his 2012 return from a 12-year hiatus, you could be forgiven for being sceptical about ’90s neo-soul singer d’Angelo going ahead with a full blown tour next year. however, dates have been released and the r&B recluse is set for the uk leg of his massive European tour. Alexandra and genevieve smart mix flavor and fashion iQ to achieve their ethical brand ginger & smart. we know ginger as a powerful spice that does the body good; and we’d all like to imagine ourselves as smart dressers. so the equation of a spicy, smart fashion multiplied tenfold equals stunning results in the capable hands of this sister duo.

Ginger & Smart
the Aussie-based pair have unveiled some lovely looks featuring skirts online and womens pants for this season’s go-getters. women’s pants are slim cut but adhere to the female form like a hand to a glove. take for instance the resolution pant. this slim pant comes in ivory and navy with a soft sheen to make it glow on the right pair of legs. A slightly masculine cut with a gentle touch of lycra. One never feels too masculine in this fetching androgynous look. this is the same look we saw rock the catwalk and the pages of vogue for ginger & smart’s runway show.

Following the ready to wear comfort and versatility they set into motion with this pant, the sisters rendered a genius sort of leather pant in their Future Crafter pant with a mid rise tailoring and choices in black or navy. it’s high cut is perfect for boots or heels. when we heard there was a leather pant lurking about in the ginger & smart lookbook, we almost trembled with anxiety. it’s not quite the sort of look a brand pulls off easily nor ethically without some heavy lifting. But to our surprise the smart sisters flex their muscles herculean bravado and render a pant that is modern and stylish. it too has a masculine cut but with a bit of stretch for both edginess and comfort. in fact it possesses enough stretch to both hug and finesse those lovely feminine curves men love. what’s more, the pant is versatile enough to be paired with a stunning work blouse or something more rugged for that night out on the town. what we didn’t see here was a rehashing of an ‘80s lookbook. thankfully.

todd Anthony tyler is sitting on top of the world right now. the former model and current resident judge on the hit show Asia’s next top Model wears many hats, all of which turn heads for all the right reasons. One doesn’t simply become a household name. you have to show and prove. And in tyler’s case, his prolific body of work as a fashion and brand photographer for elite mags like vogue and gQ has etched itself in the memory of onlookers. perhaps his eye for what looks good in the lens coupled with his own inside knowledge of striking a pose before the flashbulbs gives him the edge that sets him apart from the rest of the field. Or perhaps it’s his business prowess, having launched the successful fitness fashion brand Aumnie that keeps on the lips of tv producers and tv watchers alike. whatever his secret, all his talents come to the fore in his new show Fit For Fashion. On the show, contestants run the gamut of challenges in hopes of winning $100,000. tyler and his fellow guest celebrity judges will guide the contestants through their paces as they work to get fit and rise to the challenge of really being fit for fashion. “After hearing what the show was about and how the goal of the show was to be inspirational and life changing i was in. the show is about transformation and individual journey, something i think most people can relate to.”

Almost 5 million people work for themselves in Britain, a fact that was celebrated with national Freelance day on 19 november. In 2013 ONS figures showed women made up at least 38 per cent of the freelancing community and numbers keep growing Katie Bunting from Stockport set up her creative design business, Blackshoe, designing cards and pictures for all occasions, featuring her signature smiley characters. It was a new start for her after getting the all clear after a spate of health problems. “I’d always been known for my little, quirky Blackshoe doodles and wondered if I could create some Christmas cards for my friends and family to earn a few pennies. So in August 2012 I set up a Facebook page just to show my friends. Interest escalated very quickly.” Though starting a business is hard, Katie has never looked back: “As a single mother, the day I came off any kind of benefit and realised that my business was successful enough to keep the roof above us was a very special day for me.” She added: “The feedback I receive
can be quite overwhelming, especially for the larger family pieces where several generations can be captured together.” Mother-of-three Jo Jeffries from Manchester struggled to find fulfilling work to fit around childcare and noticed other mothers having the same issue. This motivated her to set up Writemums in 2013; a group of 14 freelance mothers delivering a range of copywriting, design and admin services. “I started the business to go part time, but I’d say I now work more hours than before but I love it when the mums tell me how much they get out of it. Having a rewarding career without having to worry about childcare costs IS possible.” If these inspiring women are anything to go by, with an open mind and self-belief, female freelancers will continue to be a growing trend.

ENTERPRISES ARE “PRICELESS” FOR SMALL BUSINESSES
The event also had many guest speakers including John Nancollis, the Managing Director of FirmStart who reiterated the importance of local business networking as well as what his business was trying to achieve in the community. It was clear to see that this event is highly beneficial to both the businesses and charities who attended the event. Sue Dickinson of The Pod charity, who help people set up their own business, said: “If there are no jobs out there that you feel compelled to
do then enterprise is a really good way of generating work for yourself that gives you the potential to earn a decent income.” Joyce, who was at the event promoting her wedding decoration company felt that the event was “priceless” to her company before adding: “We are all under one umbrella in terms of what we are trying to do here; there is no competition.”
the relaxed atmosphere of the event was. “I think for me that if this is someone’s first time at the event it can be quite intimidating, we hope to build people’s confidence so that
they can go to bigger events in the future. This is a good start point for a confidence booster.”
Richard Davies of Amazin’ Business Solutions organised the event and was in no doubt at how beneficial

But while medical concerns dominate the headlines, the economic ramifications of EVD in the countries most affected, namely Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone, but also throughout the rest of West Africa, are set to reverberate long after the long-focus cameras have moved on. Part of the commercial stresses reflect the direct costs of fighting the outbreak. But the key impacts stem from fear of catching the virus. Such “aversion behaviour” has pummelled agricultural and industrial production, travel and trade across the region to huge effect. For example, before the crisis the World Bank had predicted that Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone, would grow by 4.5 per cent, 5.9 per cent, and 11.3 per cent respectively this year. However, October saw these projections cut to 2.4 per cent, 2.5 per cent and 8.3 per cent. The downgrades equate to total foregone losses of around £225m or around 25 per cent of their total health budgets combined.
Charities also feel the benefits of enterprise as Carl Montlake from Mothers Against Violence said: “I think it’s unique that someone out there wants to provide this type of service to the local community, that’s never been available before at a low cost option.”

With both the United Nations and World Health Authorities correctly declaring the West African outbreak of the Ebola Virus Disease to be a threat to global health prospects, the belated, and self-interested, focus of a few other nations, has been on treating the afflicted and reducing transmission rates at source. To this end the US and UK governments have taken the lead in donations and sending military personnel to effectively build and stock field hospitals for treatment, but with the proviso of non-contact with patients. Meanwhile, Cuba has been by far the largest front line contributor with over 450 medical personnel.

Amir Khan returns to the ring for only the second time in a year as he looks to get career back on track at the MGM in Las Vegas. Like many modern boxers Khan seems to have a gameplan where he hopes by navigating one or two tricky fights he can bait the
likes of Pacquiao and Mayweather into a matchup. “This is a fight I need to get me to the next level,” he told Ringside; “Topping the bill at the MGM has always been my dream.” His last fight in May saw him floor former welterweight cham-

Both Manchester teams will be aiming for second place over the Christmas period ahead of a title tilt in 2015. It’s a fairly unremarkable Christmas run-in for both clubs; their biggest challenge? Consistency. Tuesday 2nd: United entertain Stoke – a tough side but Louis van Gaal will be expecting nothing less than a win. Wednesday 3rd: City travel to Sunderland on a cold, midweek evening to face Gus Poyet’s tricky Black Cats. One of many teams in the league that are hard to predict but often present a challenge to the big boys. Saturday 6th: City vs. Everton. Monday 8th:
United travel to the South Coast for a Monday night kick-off and will want their fans to return happy after a 500 mile round trip, but Southampton are this seasons surprise package and a team that doesn’t leak many goals, despite shipping three to City.
Saturday 14th: City travel to Leicester and should beat the struggling promotees. Sunday 14th: United vs. Liverpool. Saturday 20th: City face Crystal Palace. The pace and un-
predictability of Bolasie and co. could stun City if they aren’t able convert possession into goals. United travel to Villa Park looking to beat an Aston Villa side which has played well
pion Luis Collazo three times, winning by unanimous decision, taking his record to 29-3, with 19 KOs. That solid victory was needed after a tough previous six where he managed only 4-2 and his upward trajectory stalled having notched up a cou-
ple of knockouts. His opponent Devon Alexander boasts a similar record to Khan with 26-2, including 14 KOs. His last fight in June was a unanimous victory against Jesus Soto Karass after a flurry of seven current or former world
CHRIS TMAS CRACKERS against the bigger sides but United should punish their lack of consistency up front. Friday 26th: City take the trip down to the Hawthorns expecting three points from West Brom. United have the trickier of the Boxing Day clashes as Newcastle come to town. Newcastle have made an impressive climb towards the summit of the table in recent weeks and have caused United problems in the past. Sunday 28th: City welcome a struggling Burnley to East Manchester in the midst of the most gruelling part of the season. United play at White Hart Lane against an unpredictable Spurs side but will Tottenham’s European excursions take their toll? United would be disappointed to leave with nothing.
The biggest game of the festive fixtures sees Liverpool come to Old Trafford on Sunday, 14th. Liverpool have struggled without Suarez and Sturridge and Mignolet is the weakest point of a shaky defence, but the North West Derby is rarely an easy ride for United. City face underperforming Everton at the Etihad on Saturday, 6th. Everton are starting to find their stride and are a formidable opponent on their day, but the points should go to City who should then cruise through their December fixtures.
PLAYER OF NOVEMBER Both sides of the city celebrate both ends of the pitch. United’s star man has without doubt been

Spanish shot-stopper David de Gea; as good as any ‘keeper right now and always improving. Fans of City will be unanimous in their praise of talisman Sergio Aguero who saved them with vital goals in Silva’s absence and Touré’s poor form.
TRANSFER TARGETS United will need to bolster their crumbling defence with at least one centre-back come 1 January. Mats Hummels is LvG’s preferred option but Hummels has committed himself to Dortmund despite their struggles. A more viable option could be Holland stopper Ron Vlaar who could make way for a more ambitious target in the summer. City don’t lack quality players – though an extra central defender wouldn’t hurt – but squad limitations from FFP sanctions will see players more likely to leave than stay, with Samir Nasri linked to PSG.
