e can confirm that Deloris Van Cartier is indeed flinging out all the air from her lungs in The Lowry’s Quays theatre. The wannabe diva (Hayley-Ria Christian) wowed a packed 4-tiered auditorium crammed predominantly with mature female audience and teenagers. It’s a classic; a musical based on the 1992 hit film that undoubtedly turned Whoopi Goldberg into a global household name. Christian had big showbiz shoes to fill. As the glitzy burgundy-strips that curtained the stage were raised, Deloris and her two backing singers packed a punch into an opening scene that had audience members transfixed and seething with gleeful smiles.

This is a musical; and as with all musicals the songs are all the meat, sinew and bones of the show. All Saints’ production flawlessly brings the entire anatomy of a musical with note-perfect singing fleshing the play, an exquisite live orchestra [directed by Manchester Musical Award Winner Simon Murray] providing the muscle and a humorous script as the frame.
