by James Cihlar Originally airing during prime-time on network television during the 1964-1965 season, Jonny Quest was a groundbreaking cartoon series about the adventures of a young boy, Jonny, his friend Hadji, his scientist father Dr. Benton Quest, his bodyguard/ tutor Roger “Race” Bannon, and his pet dog Bandit. From India to Norway to Egypt, the Quests traveled from their home base of Palm Key for the U.S. government, usually on their own supersonic jet. Along the way they battled numerous creatures, including an invisible monster, a trained pterodactyl, and a spiderlike robot spy.
Laser Disc, Columbia Video Disc distributed in Japan in the 1990s, includes the episodes “Turu the Terrible” and “The ‘Q’ Missile Mystery” dubbed in Japanese.
With occasional assistance from Jezebel Jade, a shapely agent and love interest for Race, they regularly outsmarted many memorable villains, including an animated gargoyle, a Nazi war criminal, and, of course, the evil mastermind Dr. Zin. Like the popular Bond films of the time, this series also featured a host of gadgets: flying jetpacks, hovercraft, and picture phones. As explained in the first aired episode, “The Mystery of the Lizard Men,” after Jonny “lost his mother,” special agent Race Bannon was assigned to protect him as companion, tutor, and bodyguard. The

story of how the Quests first met Hadji is told (in flashback) in “Calcutta Adventure,” the seventh episode to air. The producers, Hanna Barbera, set out to make Jonny Quest different from their lighter comic fare, such as The Flintstones or Huckleberry Hound. The settings were lushly illustrated, and the figures were realistically drawn. Jonny Quest adopted the more dramatic style of comic books. Hanna Barbera hired veteran Marvel Comics artist Doug Wildey to develop the original

concept art. The resulting 26 episodes are what Lyle P. Blosser and Craig Fuqua refer to as “Classic Jonny Quest.” In 1998 they began the website classicjq.com, which today is an extensive and entertaining online resource for fans. It features an FAQ, episode guide, and the poll results for “favorite episode”: “The Invisible Monster” is in the lead, followed by “The Robot Spy.” The website also lists the settings, villains, monsters, and machines appearing in each episode. A page of media includes MP3s of dialogue, promos, and the distinctively jazzy music score from the show. And a forum page allows for
discussion. Perhaps of most interest for collectors is Classic Jonny Quest’s “Memorabilia” page. Including images as well as descriptions, this resource shows the merchandising associated with the original series, including videos, DVDs, comic books, coloring books, board and card games, puzzles, and records. Although several tieins were made, the website notes: “most of them are rather rare and correspondingly expensive! Among the more reasonable and easily-found items are videos and comic books; other items such as Jonny Quest games, models, and the like quickly move out of the range of the casual collector.” Original art or animation cels have also entered the market.

browsing lady followed by a patient husband. After a while they approached the service counter. I quickly brushed the cookie crumbs off my chins. “I have some questions,” she said. “First, why is that

The $12 brooch is an inexpensive copy and of no interest to collectors.” Personally, I thought the Trifari should be priced higher, but hey. “Jelly Belly?” she asked. “Yes.” By Joan Sween “Jelly. Belly?” she asked more firmly with see?” her eyebrows raised. “Nothing,” she said with a frown. “Try looking at the top of where the clip attaches,” I hinted.

“Yes,” I said somewhat defensively. “The rounded middle stone in the elephant’s stomach is called a Jelly Belly. It’s a style that Trifari innovated in the 1930s.” “They both have round stones in the middle,” she said, looking dubious. How do you tell which is the expensive one?” I suppose I could have spent a half hour explaining low-cost manufacturing, but hey. I took the easy way out. I handed her the Trifari and a magnifying glass. “Look at the back of this brooch,” I said. “What do you

“Ahh!” she said, gasping. “It says ‘Trifari!’” I love that breathless moment when people discover a mark—a cheap thrill for me, but hey. “That’s the easiest clue,” I said. “Most high-quality costume jewelry will be marked.” “Well that’s easy,” she said. Hubby nodded and smiled. They moved off to do some more browsing. Later, the same lady asked me to open another showcase that featured Mexican jewelry. Lifting up two necklaces, she examined their backsides. One was a graceful unmarked piece, very possibly made in the late 1800s, and priced $3,599. The other was a nice, but fairly common, slender necklace priced $9. Personally, I thought the unmarked necklace was a little

overpriced, considering its uncertain provenance, but hey. “Okay, I can do this,” the lady grinned. “This piece is marked, ‘Alpaca,’ and is therefore high-quality costume jewelry. The other one is not marked at all. So why is the marked one priced so low, and the unmarked one priced thousands? That isn’t at all what you told me,” she said accusingly. “You’re right,” I said, “but Mexican silver is different. Way before marks were ever established in Mexico, many local artisans made unmarked jewelry of a higherthan-normal silver quality. So, the dealer is assuming that this unmarked piece may be exceptionally old and of the highest quality silver.” “Uh-huh,” said the lady. “The Alpaca mark, on the other hand, tells us this piece is not silver at all. Beer collector show on tap
--PRESS RELEASE MAPLEWOOD, MINN.--Hundreds of breweriana enthusiasts will gather at the Aldrich Arena in Maplewood, Minn., on Saturday, October 7 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. for the annual Guzzle ’N Twirl Show & Sale sponsored by the North Star Chapter of the Beer Can Collectors of America. This beer-lover’s show and sale is one of the largest in the Midwest. Some 150 dealers from across the country will bring a vast assortment of beer collectibles, ranging from pre-1900 beer bottles, mugs, glasses, and signs to newer neon lights. Trays, openers, kegs, cases, coasters, and corkscrews will be for sale as well. If it was produced by or for an American brewery, especially the past and present breweries of the Midwest, this is the place to look for it. Chairman Dave Wendl says, “Be it a pre-Prohibition beer tray or a glowing neon light for behind the bar, collectors are likely to find that special beer
