Avid collector Joe Van Beusekom said that Wade Whimsies came from England, Ireland, and Canada; they are not U.S. originals. “Starting as a food premium, a gift with a purchase, the first Whimsies were produced from 1954 to

Warm up a fall bouquet and get some great leftovers.
by Joan Sween It being November, my work partner, Sandy, and I looked for Thanksgiving-themed items to arrange on our front display table. We had found a tobacco brown tablecloth that covered the whole surface of the table and hung down 12 inches all around, which was perfect, the table under it showing
the scars of the previous owner’s children. We sometimes described it as “an authentic distressed primitive.” We carried up figures of Puritans, turkeys, multi-colored flint corn cobs and other good things. I added a small hatchet to the table. Sandy insisted that it was a dangerous weapon and didn’t fit

By Joan Sween with our theme. I settled the argument by pointing out that the only danger involved was to the turkey, whose demise was a major theme of Thanksgiving. We got the display table all arranged and stood back to look at it. “It’s too flat,” said
Sandy. “We need something tall in the back.” “I know,” I said. “I’ll go collect colorful weeds and make a tall fall bouquet to stand at the back.” The next morning I arrived early and set a vase on the display table filled with milkweed stalks, rose hips, cattails, bright colored leaves, a bunch of bright red branches and lots of those things with bulb growths on the stems. It looked great. When Sandy arrived, she thought it was a perfect finishing touch. Some time later, our first customer of the day arrived. She exclaimed, “Oh, look at the Thanksgiving arrangement. Aren’t all those
Pilgrims sweet.” She moved closer to the table and screeched, “Aieeeee! They’re all over! Out, out, out!” she shouted as she headed for the door. “Never again!” “What on earth was that all about?” Sandy asked. We walked over to examine our table closer. Everything on it was crawling with worms! “Oh, yuk!” said Sandy. “The heat in here is waking up all the larvae that were hibernating for the winter. You did spray everything with a bug killer before you brought it in, didn’t you?”

“Uhhh? Bug killer?” I said. “Huh!” said Sandy, rolling her eyes. “Well, you get to pick all the creepy crawlies off the table before we lose another customer.” “I don’t touch caterpillars! I whined. “Today you do,” said Sandy menacingly. “You brought them in; you take them out!” I found a pair of chopsticks in someone’s booth and used them to pick up each worm and drop it in a paper sack. I had just removed the last of the little nasty things when another customer walked in and Sandy started helping her. I nipped outside to put the sack in the trash container. When I came back, I noticed a bit of fluff floating in the air. Ignoring it, I rummaged under the service counter, looking for the stash of customer cookies. When I stood up, three bits of fluff bobbed in the air. Suddenly there were several more. Then the air was full of them. Sandy and her
customer came back up to the service counter. “Good heavens,” she said. “The cattails!” Sure enough, as the cattails warmed up, they were releasing their heads. The front of the shop was engulfed in a blizzard of fluffies dancing in the air. Moments later, they were so thick it was impossible to see through them. The shop door opened. The astounded voice of the mall manager was heard. “What on earth is going on?” We finally opened the front door and s shooed the fluffies out by flapping tea towels at them--the customer pitching in goodnaturedly. When the area was clear, our mall manager glared at me. “Don’t you know enough to give cattails a good coating of hair spray before you bring them in?” she demanded. “Uhhh? Hair spray? I said. “Tell you what. Why don’t I---” “No!” they all shouted at once--the customer pitching in good-naturedly. © 2017 Joan Sween

These characters would appeal to kids since the series was built on a well known 1940s nursery rhyme. In the U.S. the Red Rose Tea Company placed Wade Whimsies
A promo for Red Rose Tea, the “American Heritage” group of 10 figurines is too new to be in the most recent Wade Whimsical Collectables catalogue, according to Van Beusekom. They depict U.S. symbols from colonial times to the Space Age. The representations include: an arrowhead, crates of tea, a steam engine, the White House, a bison, the Liberty Bell, a tractor, a wagon, and the Space Shuttle.

The Old Times
Wade introduced nursery rhyme figures in the 1950s such as “The Butcher.” He comes from a set of three characters from a 1940s nursery rhyme: “the butcher, the baker, the candle stick maker.” These images were part of a larger category called “Storybook Figures.”

There were test markets in the U.S. “In 1983 the promotion moved into the United States.” Although Wade has created more contemporary figurines, such as Betty Boop,
Wade issued “Humpty Dumpty,” one in a series of four sets of rhyme and storybook characters, each in a different colored box, from 1972-1981. The first “Humpty Dumpty” was produced in 1972 and came in a green box under the title, “Nursery Favourites.”
Christmas ornaments, and Peanuts characters, Van Beusekom is not interested in these collectibles. “I tend more to the older things. I like vintage like Legends of Britain, Robin Hood, and King Arthur. The
more I look at them, the more details I see.” The figurines often captivate and trigger Van Beusekom’s ability to observe tiny features

About 15 years ago he became aware of Wade Whimsies when a friend he knew collected them. Two years ago he became a more serious collector and has purchased hundreds of figures from England, the
Pacific Northwest, Canada, and locations sprinkled through the U.S. He finds additions to his collection at antiques stores, flea markets, garage sales, and online. “Once you know what you’re looking for, they’re pretty distinctive,” he said. His take on rare antiques is refreshing. “Rare doesn’t always mean expensive. It’s what somebody is willing to pay for it. Just because I like it doesn’t mean someone else will like it.” He studies the market to check on what others see as rare. Van Beusekom is also a dealer in Wade Whimsies. In the “Circus” series he sells inexpensive figures for $2.50. His figures in the “Animals” series start at $4. He bases his pricing on the inventory he has. In his collections are Larry and Lester, leprechaun twins produced from 1974 to 1985 in Ireland. However, most of his leprechauns come from
