All dolled up: flexible fabric dolls Smack dab
in the middle by Donald-Brian Johnson
by Donald-Brian Johnson Some dolls cry. Some say “Mama.” Lots of them open and close their eyes. And diapered baby dolls often put those tiny diapers to practical use. Fabric dolls, with their flexible wire underpinnings, just bend. These dolls don’t really need to “do” anything. Just pose them and, when the mood strikes, change the poses. The dolls won’t mind. Their colorfully detailed costuming and whimsical expressions make them a unique visual accent, even in an otherwise doll-less modern décor. Fabric dolls have been around for ages, whether dolling up Egyptian tombs or being dragged around in the dust by those

When you’re on the way out, the truth comes out Dealer’s Choice Dealer’s Choice
by Joan Sween OUR MALL CLOSED!! We learned the news on Halloween Day. The building owner, who had been very kind to us for years, had finally doubled our rent. Talk about a trick with no treat. For years, we all had been clearing just enough to allow us to go out hunting for more saleable items. Now, however, that pleasure had just been nipped in the pocketbook. No more auction sales for us. No estate sales. No church bazaars. No garage sales. No useda-bit stores. Sob! Worse, we had only 60 days to vacate the premises, and we had all that stuff to move out. We devised a plan of action. The first week we had a big meeting dolefully sharing how much we had invested in inventory, how stacked and packed our garages were, how disgusting the economy was, how every other mall but ours wasn’t closing, and how holiday shopping probably wouldn’t save our skins. The potential of a sudden and mysterious demise of the building owner was voiced, but quickly

“LOST OUR LEASE! EVERYTHING 50% OFF!” Everyone agreed that 50% was pretty drastic, but the up side was that
everything would fly out of here, and come the last week in December, all we would have to move out would be shelves and showcases-assuming we didn’t sell those also. The next day that I worked, a dealer named Sam came in and began packing selected items out of his booth. “Aren’t you going to sell those things?” I asked. “No sirree,” he said, “I paid a real good price for these things at an auction two years ago, and I’m danged if I’ll sell them for 50 percent off! I’m going to store them with the
other things in my garage until I get a space in another mall.” That got me to thinking. At 50 percent off, I would recoup
maybe $400 over my hundred in my hand in purchase price instead 60 days versus $2,000 of my expected $2,000 in boxes in my attic; over. Should I look at that as a $400 profit or Cont. on page 9 a $1,600 loss? Four

Antique Sporting & Advertising Show brings in February
The Sporting show features a wide variety of advertising, including beer signs in mint condition.
These bears made an appearance last year, but they probably have new jobs as someone’s lifesize companion. Maybe they are sending replacements.
--PRESS RELEASE OSHKOSH, WIS.-The Northstar Collective’s 16th Annual Antique Sporting and Advertising Show will
be held at the Sunnyview Expo Center in Oshkosh, Wis., from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday, February 2, and from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on
Saturday, February 3. A variety of quality dealers will be there with fine merchandise. From animal mounts to hunting knives, from antique advertising to old general store displays, thousands of items will be on display and sale to satisfy the most casual and the most experienced collector. With lures, decoys, traps, cabin décor, furniture, Native American artifacts, early to mid-century toys, and more, the
show promises to provide an awe-inspiring variety of true finds. Prices range from ten dollars to thousands of dollars. The Northstar Collective aims to bring a rich era of America’s fine history to life, from the time of frontiersmen trading goods with Native Americans for furs and pelts to the prominence of pioneers of industry who developed our nation into a mechanized civilization. The

propelled by her passionate appreciation of every artifact, beginning with the oldest doll and her buggy dating from 1850, a $10,000 doll collection, and a dollhouse with portraits of the donor’s family on the walls. “We accept donations based on a couple of criteria,” Budd explained. “First, is it related to Pine County history?” State or national relevance might also qualify it. The museum’s oldest artifact is a 7,000-year-old Bison Occidentalis skull found by Virgil Sjordahl of Sandstone when he worked as an inspector for the Minnesota Highway Department. Its biggest artifact is a curtain from the Family Theater in Pine City, and its most popular exhibit features a historically accurate map of model trains running between Minneapolis and Duluth at their peak. crew have spent five years recreating each depot to scale and constructing the tracks from original blueprints. Touring with Budd, you find out things you might never know otherwise. Pausing by a paper mache stork made by Joan Hansen, a local artist, Budd remarked, “In Denmark storks are very good luck, but they migrate to Egypt, where people eat them. So they’re becoming endangered.” Next to the stork is a glass case filled with wooden carvings made by the woodworkers’ club, which, Budd pointed out, meets at the museum every Wednesday morning. Besides all it already houses, there is space in the building for groups to meet and events to be held. Old high school band uniforms, old cameras, folk dance costumes, sports uniforms from the 1920s and 30s, and, not least, cars from the 1920s and 30s, claim whole rooms or cases. Military uniforms worn by Pine County residents range from WWI, WWII, Vietnam, up to Afghanistan. The WWI exhibit spent two years across the ocean. A telephone booth is filled with old phones. “Kids don’t know how to use these phones,” Budd laughed. A 5000-year-old biface knife lays next to a Native American Jingle Dance. Textiles, organs, horsehair blankets, a hand-crafted loom, and a 1905 wedding dress

The Old Times to each Pine County town hold old yearbooks, community histories, autobiographies, books by local authors, obituaries and scrapbooks. Each Pine County town has a booth of its own. Bruno’s holds a miniature village, recreating the busy town it once was. A “logging room” is filled with donations made by Richard Berglund of Hinckley. Many items come with a story, including the wedding dress Budd donated worn by her
paternal grandmother. The irony was the girl’s parents had arranged for her to marry a man in the U.S., but instead the 15-year-old married Jacob Hansen, whom she met on her journey from Denmark. Antique cars round out the tour, including a wood-covered 1982 Mercury Grand Marquis. Thirty volunteers keep the museum open year-round seven days a week. The late Marvin Johnson of Bruno, Minn., covered this entire 1982 Mercury Grand Marquis in wood and applied three coats of polyurethane. It took Johnson and his wife 300 hours to complete the 450 square feet of ¾-inch pine, tongue-and-groove pieces. “He was a contractor,” said Museum Director Budd, “and he said: ‘I spent $1,000 on the car and $1,000 on the materials, and I owe myself $50,000 in labor!’” (Photos by Tanya Starinets)
