Overdue Resolution

“Be genuinely kinder.” My new list included three lines.

“Be genuinely kinder.” The winter here is cold, it tends to send me deep into my own frozen hell that exists wholly in my head. The winter here is long, so I spend a lot of time in that frigid misery. It brings out the very worst in me. By the end of December 2017 every word out of my foul mouth was malice. “I hate her.” “I hate him.” “I hate people.” “I hate this.”— While outwardly expressing my strong distaste for just about everyone and everything, I was caught by an acquaintance. “You hate a lot.” Winter 2017 was when I finally evaluated myself and I found something so gruelling and negative that it was scratching on my very person like nails on a chalkboard. I found a trait that I was so terribly embarrassed by, and yet somehow I had spent years ignoring it, brushing it off like it was an unavoidable facet of my being that built a home within me and I was perhaps too afraid to evict it. I found hatred. Maybe more than that. I found rude. I found cold. I found ugly.

The first for someone I had hurt a few years ago. At the time I had too much pride to apologize and had made myself believe that it was their fault and that they didn’t deserve an apology. The second for an old friend who I had a catastrophic falling-out with in high school. I harboured a disgusting grudge against this old friend for almost ten years. It was starting to get painfully exhausting. And the third line simply said “Those who you “hate””. For everyone I’ve walked by and thought “I hate you” for no reason (or for ignorant reasons). Summer of 2018 is close to its end and I’ve given a sincere apology to the person who I previously decided did not deserve one from me. I’ve reconnected with my old friend and put our grudge to sleep. (We’re even happily beginning to rebuild our burned bridge). And I’ve stopped and asked myself “why do you “hate” them?” every time I’ve even dared to think of hatred when passing someone for a split second.

New Years came quickly and I realized that I could in fact do something about this freshly uncovered stain on my soul. “Be kinder.”

The kinder person I’m attempting to cultivate within myself doesn’t need to be a saint, but she does need to be honest and true. If I lack the ability to recognize what is genuine kindness as opposed to self-indulgent, faux compassion, then I lack the ability to become a better person and eliminate the trait that’s haunting me.

I would start by making a list of people I could apologize to, or maybe even just smile at the next time I saw them. The list was quite long at first and included people who I had even just simply looked at the wrong way. The plan was to go big or go home. I would be the hero who apologized to all these sorry souls on my list! My take on this whole “kindness” concept was very selfish. I thought hard until I realized that all of this meant absolutely nothing unless I truly felt sorry and honestly wanted to mend these relationships.

The summer here is warm, it tends to bring out my efficiency and positivity. The summer here is quite short, and autumn will be here in a moment, crunching leaves and warm colours lasting only for a few weeks until winter hits hard again. But this year I refuse to allow it to bring out the very worst in me. There will be no unnecessary hatred. There will only be continuous working towards my overdue resolution. Perhaps a few more lines added to my list. But ultimately there will be honesty with no ulterior motives or selfish endgames. Only pure, genuine kindness.

GIRL: Tell us about yourselves? KATIE/KARISSA: We were born identical twins, Katie and Karissa Strain, on July 21, 1990 in Chatham, Ontario. We pride ourselves on just making the deadline to be a part of the cancer zodiac...hence our collective name of KARKAT(which means cancer in Sanskrit) the first three letters of both of our names in the order we were born and what we believe to be our twin “kismet”. We have lived in Toronto for 10 years, pursuing our dream of being film and television actresses. More recently branching out to the American market and trying our hand at writing and producing our own content. GIRL: When did you first recognize that you had a passion for acting? KATIE/KARISSA: When we were young, we always had a flair for quite dramatic and interesting clothing choices and had a dream that one day we might become models. We quickly learned that with our height and stature, the chances of that becoming a reality were slim but it was suggested to us to try acting. Which we did and very quickly fell in love with. We always used to write little stories and put on plays and shows for our family/friends as children so i suppose we should have known we possessed that passion all along. GIRL: What was it about acting that drew you in? KATIE/KARISSA: We were painfully shy as children. Always afraid to share our thoughts and ideas. We discovered with acting that it provided a safe place to do so, as when you act you aren’t yourself, but a character. It was an outlet to be able to explore different facets of our personality while not feeling exposed or vulnerable about it. A feeling of being able to play outside yourself without fear of criticism or judgement. I think we always feared too much what others would think of us which really hindered our self confidence. Acting really helped us work through that, be able to step outside ourselves, take risks and be bold and in doing so helped us learn so much about ourselves and our voices and to trust and be confident in them.

GIRL: What is the most challenging and rewarding thing about acting? KATIE/KARISSA: The most challenging thing about acting is that it is such a tough and competitive and like most things, political, field to get into. The first 10 years of doing this have been tough, with moments of a lot of work matched equally by moments of hardly working. You find that you really have to have a full passion for it in order to stick with it, because sometimes you have to face a lot of rejection and it hurts and it’s frustrating and it can be discouraging. If you want it badly enough though, you stick with it, because there are times when you are down, but the moments when you do book the role, it is the “highest” high, the most euphoric feeling in the World. When we first got our Visa to the U.S. we went to LA for a few months and it didn’t really turn out the way we had hoped, it was a rather humbling experience. It was through a phone call with a friend, talking about how disappointing it was that a big shift in our perspective came about. They said, “if it doesn’t make you happy then why are you doing it?”. After sitting with that for a moment, the answer that came was, it does make us happy, it makes us the most happy, in fact we feel the most like ourselves when we are acting.” That is the moment that a big reality hit for us, no one gets to tell us whether we are actors or not, no one gets to grant us permission to call ourselves that. Whether they hire us for their project or not, it can’t take away who we are or what we do. That is when we realized, if we wanted to be in this industry we had to think outside the box, if this path of auditioning wasn’t working for us then perhaps we needed to try something else. That is when we decided to focus on our own work...all of our sketch comedy characters were born in the weeks following that. The moment we stopped looking for outside gratification or approval and granted ourselves the permission to be “actors”

GIRL: We talked about writing and a bit about a special pilot/script you are working on, can you tell us why you wanted to write? KATIE/KARISSA: We have been working on an idea for a tv series for the last 6 years (of course a show about a set of identical twins). The idea has been altered through the years and the writer has changed several times. We previously didn’t believe we could write it ourselves. In the past years we started writing on a smaller scale. Short sketch comedy scripts, never full length. We didn’t think we were capable of it. However, in the last year, our lives shifted quite a bit, in many ways, personally and professionally. We found a fresh perspective for the show idea. One that would incorporate our current state and situation in life (one very similar to many others our age) and be an authentic and honest look at our industry, our lives and what we have to offer. To share the insight and experience of a Woman in her late 20’s who may not have everything figured out, in a male dominated industry, dealing with the ups and downs of dating and singledom. We want to create a show that captures the honest essence of being woman, from a woman’s point of view as opposed to the most often portrayed “movie version” of Woman created by a male perspective. It was a real wakeup call and being such a personal epiphany it became very apparent that we would have to try writing it ourselves. No one can write our voice or experience better than we can. We doubted it at first but we knee how bad we wanted to share our story and when we actually accepted this and sat down to do it, it came so naturally and freely. We don’t know how we ever questioned ourselves. Now we have the pilot written, as well as a series bible and are currently submitting it to different networks and setting up meetings to pitch it! Fingers crossed we will find the right people to help us bring it to life!!!

GIRL: We talked a bit about special signs from the universe and the mystical, do you believ in the mystical and powers from beyond? KATIE/KARISSA: We have always and will always believe in magic. Our minds are more powerful then we give them credit for. The universe is all energy and we truly believe that what you put out in life is what you can expect to receive in return. For us, nature has always been a connection to that magic. There is something about looking out at a large body of water, a lake or an Ocean, and seeing endless sky touching seemingly endless water. It makes you feel like anything is possible. Or laying in the grass at night and staring up at a blanket of twinkling stars and a bright moon...how can you not believe in magic when you see those moments of striking beauty?! When we were younger we lived in the country, pretty far removed from other children, so nature is really what occupied most of our time. Behind our house, past a lot of rows of Christmas trees, was a river bank. We spent many a days sitting on that river bank, day dreaming. The funny thing is we had no idea, at the

time, what we were dreaming for!! We didn’t even know what it meant to be an actor, we just knew that we wanted to live incredible lives, and whatever that meant, where ever it took us, what ever we would fin ourselves to be doing, we believed that anything was possible and we were going to make it happen! We have too many experiences to tell regarding nature, or dreams, and moments of rare kismet to get into, but we can say whole heatedly that life is full of signs, it just depends whether you are open to receiving them. As one rather interesting example, the blackbird has always been a strong and important symbolism for us. It represents embracing the mystery of life and trusting that the answers you seek will be apparent to you when you are ready for them. It always shows itself in times when we need to remember this. We found it quite lovely and ironic to be wearing several pieces by the “Blackbird” clothing line for this shoot!

GIRL: What does it mean to be able to work so closely as sisters? Do you think working and writing as sisters helps or hinders the process? Do you have a certain dynamic that you find works? KATIE/KARISSA: We absolutely love working together. Don’t get us wrong, we argue and bicker and get in our fair share of annoyances with each other, but we are also so lucky and blessed to share such a deep connection with each other. It is a bond that you will be hard pressed to duplicate in life. Acting, especially with scene partners, is all about chemistry and connecting with another human in a vulnerable way. We each love exploring that with other actors but there is something we think is pretty special about our natural chemistry as sisters that shows in our work. We find it come through in our writing as well. Often times, after we go back and look at a finished product we cant even decipher who came up with which parts (doean’t mean we don’t argue over who gets to take ownership for them haha), because we have built a model of working together where we feed off of each others ideas/ energy. So one of us will mention an idea and the other expands on it and brings a new perspective, which then inspires the other one to take it one step farther, etc. It has become a very natural process for us now and we also kind of take turns on who spearheads which initiatives at any given time. When one is more inspired they take charge and vice versa.

GIRL: You both mentioned that this year you have both really grown as women, that self acceptance and being in tune with yourseleves has playesd a big role in your lives. Can you tell us about that, as well as why it’s so important for women to accept themeseleves and be fearless? Furthermore, do you have ant advice for women/girls who want their creative voices to be heard? KATIE/KARISSA: It takes life experience, failures and successes both to figure out exactly who you are. No amount of lessons or education can teach you that and we truly believe that’s the most important thing about being an artist. Take the time to enjoy life and figure out who you are and when you find that voice trust it. Wholeheartedly. Do not forsake it or change it for others. It is your power and beauty and your individual magic. Compromise is always a good quality to possess in life, but especially as woman, we need to realize that being willing to compromise doesn’t mean giving up what is important to us or changing ourselves in order to fit anyone elses ideals of what we “should be”. You will never find true happiness unless you are fully able to embrace what makes you, you. Never let anyone take that from you or chip away at it. One big key we try hard to live by is to learn to trust the natural flow of things which means sometimes you have to let go of your best laid plans and intentions. Some of the biggest failures and disappointments in our lives have lead to the most magnificent discoveries. The relationships that didn’t work out, the roles we didn’t book, those moments taught us more about ourselves then anything else, which lead us eventually to new levels of happiness/success. As the expression goes “when one door closes, another opens”...who knows where that other door may lead, maybe somewhere far beyond the scope of the expectations you had set from the previous one. Be open to what life has in store for you!

GIRL: What’s next for you both? KATIE/KARISSA: Last October we filmed our first Lead role in a film in LA titled “Twinsanity”. It was just released on AMAZON and ITUNES in the U.S. Hopefully in Canada soon as well. So we will see what that may lead to, we also have quite a few Indie features up in the air right now. Fingers crossed it is the first of many films for us. Beyond that we will keep pitching our show and see if we can find someone who believes in it as much as we do ;)

Art Work & Words by The Editor It’s a Saturday night and I have spent a few hours doing work on my computer, when all of a sudden I start to feel really weird. My brain seems as if it’s stopped working. Like it’s clouded or stuck. I feel weird and I don’t like this feeling. I don’t like feeling a loss of control over my thoughts and the way my physical body feels, but I have suffered with anxiety since the age of 16 and I know I am having an anxiety attack. However, it doesn’t feel like a normal panic attack. It feels much deeper than that. It feels like I am about to go crazy. I feel nuts. I feel like my brain is going a million miles an hour. Any minute now the doctors are going to come and lock me up in a padded cell. I have finally lost my mind. BUT! It’s not true. I haven’t and a night of severe anxiety has taught me all about the shady ways panic attacks will trick you. That night was an eye opener for me. I researched the reasons why I wasn’t actually going crazy but rather facing another panic attack, and here are my findings. If you were crazy you wouldn’t know it. Yes, isn’t that a relief? If your next trip was to the looney bin you wouldn’t event realize it. Most people who are unstable mentally don’t wonder if they are crazy they simple act erratically. You would be singing about blue elephants dancing on your bed and truly believe they were there instead of wondering if you were crazy. It’s actually a fear of going crazy This is a real thing and it is a symptom of anxiety. You may suddenly fear that you are unable to think or are afraid of having a nervous breakdown you may even have thoughts that frighten you. All of these thoughts and feelings amount to one thing according to anxietycentre.com. It’s your body’s stress response. The stress response happens when we are worrying or fretting over something. It prepares you for an immediate action like flight or fight. It’s just your brain reacting to stress, this can make us feel like there is a heightened sense of danger but really there is nothing to be afraid of. Your brain is just doing it’s thing. It’s annoying, but once you realize what is happening you can begin to calm yourself. Say goodbye to crazy thoughts! The best way to eliminate this feeling is to recognize that it is just your active stress response. To tell yourself that if you were crazy you wouldn’t even know it or be wondering if you were. Breathe deeply and meditate if you can. You have to remember that there is absolutely no connection between this anxiety or panic attack and going crazy. It’s actually a physical impossibility. It will subside when your body is rested. Maybe you just need a good nights sleep. So no, just like I found out you aren’t actually losing your mind, It’s just your brain doing stupid things.

GIRLS IN CLUBS Word by HOLLY PARKINSON @tonystarkinson

I thought we were more than just girls in clubs A pastel pink cigarette I stole from your lips Payment of my candied kiss, blown into smoke curls and pools A picture of want Want, need The feeling a penny with no shoulders or head, but feathers filigree We were models that night, Feet sticky on the seats of culture Lights and neurones syncopated Beats and thunder, hypnotised. You understood the etiquette and took the catwalk clean, Shook hands with liquor, his woman and hers As if bolted skyward, Polaris in view Skunk, spit and gasoline With only my eyes to breathe The classical, velvetine girl that you are shouldn’t fasten your hands to my waist like that, my mind shouted over the waves My mouth wide and silent to let saltwater in. If the lights had been brighter, would you have been kinder? As I’m screaming NO would you falter? Toxic, intoxicated TOXIC You are inching, inching, bristled Medusa, And I am ITCHING, itching You wanted all I owned Perhaps I needed you, but I didn’t want a thing. I thought you were home but you were daggers and needles and disease down my spine and the bruises on my lips.

p.s- I am living now, darling, And I see what you mean. I am mine to adore, and was never yours to keep. Even the most breathtaking building is scuffed at the edges

LOVE

LOVE

Art Work & Word by The Editor

Ever since I was a young girl I was obsessed with romantic love. I know, it’s very corny. Don’t get me wrong either. I was a very intense feminist even at 5 years of age. When my mom asked me what I wanted to be for Halloween 1995 I said Peter Pan. My sister and cousin were Belle from beauty in the beast. My mom sewed both their costumes. I remember how beautiful they were, gathered and ruffled big dresses with a matching faux fur shawl (because October in Canada is cold). Then there was my costume. A green spandex tunic with sharp edged hems and green tights and of course a plastic sword to finish off the look. I was a warrior queen or witch in most of the games I would play and truly believed girls could do anything boys could. Not to mention my pre-teens were Buffy obsessed and embarrassingly I worshiped the show Xena the warrior princess. I remember eating KFC alone in my room watching Xena on my tiny box tv. However, there was always once constant. I was in love with romantic love. I dreamed of what my first kiss would be like. I married the neighbourhood boy in a back yard ceremony orchestrated by my older sister and neighbourhood friends. I had my first real kiss at 11 and had a million and one crushes. It’s not like I was the type of girl that had my “dream wedding planned” I was after all a huge tom boy for a few years even cutting my butt length hair shorter then my ears to embrace my individuality. However, I always felt like there was someone out there that would connect with me on some sort of deeper level. Like some cosmic energy would bring us together in some grand “way”. I was a sucker for those dramatic “run to me, kissing in the rain, it was you all along” movie scenes and I kind of still am. Is being in love with love an actual thing? I often ponder this question. According to psychology today it is very possible to be addicted to love. They even go as far as saying that your love of love might be like a pattern of addiction. For example you could be infatuated with the notion of being in love. Thinking that real life love is exactly the same as what you have seen in films or read in fiction. Maybe you find yourself breaking up with someone and thinking “ I’ll never make that mistake again” but then avoiding all the warning signs and falling for someone who isn’t right for you again and again, only so you can feel that intensity or love. Psychology Today also has a quiz with some warning signs, and I even gull reading them. “Uh-Oh” I think I am in love with love. My husband and I have been together for a little over ten years. He is the love of my life and we actual did have an almost movie-like beginning to our relationship. My love for him was unrequited, I tried to get over him but felt those intense butterflies in the pit of my stomach when he’s walk into a room, there was so much tension between, and something that drew us to each other even though the timing wasn’t right, eventually when the timing was right (because I believe in all the karma and timing shit) we fell head over heels madly in love with each other and still are today. I do however find myself romanticizing the younger us and sometimes that can be dangerous. Psychology today goes as far as saying that you might have a love addiction if you have used the words “soul mate” in reference to how a relationship should be and even asking what the longest about of time you were single/unattached and NOT fretting about some love interest.? Oops, I think I almost always was fretting about someone romantically throughout my life. I am unsure whether being in love with love is a bad thing. After all love is wonderful and being a romantic is great. (at least I think) But maybe being too in love with the idea of love and romance could lead to unhealthy relationships and problems. Maybe I should leave this to the experts.
