Community supports annual Joe Manfreda Dream Dash On Saturday, May 7, students, staff, Lucinda Vang Editor-in-chief and supporters of the Roseville Community Schools participated in the third Josh Kovach annual Dream Dash. It is the second Staff Reporter year honoring Joe Manfreda who passed away in January 2015. The 5K run/walk gathered over 200 participants not including volunteers from staffs and members of the National Honor Society. This year the RCSSF raised enough money for about three to five scholarships. Gifts that were donated by area businesses, such as The Body Shop, Hanson’s Running Shop, Dearborn Sausage Company, Famous Dave’s, Apollo Lanes, Einstein Bagels, Belle Tire, Robert & Catherine Halso, Dooley’s Roseville, Kroger (13 mile & Little Mack), Apple Annie’s Ram’s Horn, Laura & Robert Adams, Kathleen Delia, Cheryl Kowalezy-State Farm, Cloverleaf Pizza (13 mile), and Sheryl Vitale-Origami Owl were also raffled off after the participants finished the 5K run/walk. Manfreda’s brother and alumni Jay Manfreda said, “It was great to run the Dream Dash for a second year, but
even better having graduated a year ago now, to see all of my old friends from Roseville and family that came out to show their support.” Math teacher, David Skidmore’s son, Adam, came in first followed by junior Rickey Shackelford in second. Regarding coming in first place, Adam Skidmore said, “It was really fun to participate in the Dream Dash along with my dad and the Roseville Community.” 90 year old Navy World War II veteran, Don Clark, also participated in the 5K run/walk once again this year along with many other participants. One of the other biggest standouts of the year is the vast amount of little runners from the running club who have been training at Memorial Park. The running club consisted of many students from the elementary schools, such as Steenland, Fountain, Dort, and many more. The results are available at http://www.eastsideracingcompany.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/08/Joe-Manfreda-Dream-Dash.htm and pictures are being posted on the Joe Manfreda Dream Dash page on Facebook.

Transgender bathroom legislation to be introduced in MI Jenna Stanley Section Editor
The MichLucinda Vang igan Editor-in-chief Board of Education released a proposal on Feb. 26 that would allow transgender students to use bathrooms and locker rooms that match their personal gender identity. The proposal would allow students to choose which pronoun they would like to go by, which bathroom they want to use, and for school districts to enforce and implement policies protecting students from harassment, violence, and discrimination. The purpose for this is to provide professional development opportunities to all staff and board members supporting the formation of extracurricular activities and to encourage respect for the human and civil rights of all people, including those who are LGBTQ, across the curriculum. The proposal will also allow school districts to provide appropriate information about LGBTQ issues in school libraries and in student and faculty resource centers, to collect and review data to ensure a safe and successful learning experience for LGBTQ students. School districts will also be able to designate a staff member

students to do the right thing is also an important key as well. However, this issue spreads farther than just in our public schools. Target recently announced that transgender customers at its stores are welcome to use the bathroom that matches their gender identity. “We welcome transgender team members and guests to use the restroom or fitting room facility that corresponds with their gender identity,” the retailer said in one of their online news post. “Everyone deserves to feel like they belong,” Target representatives said. The State Board of Education will be asked to approve the proposal on May 10 and the guidelines for the Department of Education proposal would be voluntary for schools. Ferndale Public Schools’ Board of Education had already voted to support the State Board’s policy regarding protecting the safety and well-being of LGBTQ students on April 18.

News & Views 3 Pi’s Fight to St. Louis
Zack Mroz Four years ago, I Managing Editor joined a robotics team. Yeah, yeah I know what you are thinking, “Robotics? What a nerd.” Although, being on a FIRST robotics team is more than a nerdy club. It’s a life changing experience. FIRST stands for, For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology. The mission and goal is to increase STEM (Science, technology, engineering and mathematics) awareness, and to encourage teenagers to go into STEM related fields in the future. FIRST is a worldwide, nonprofit organization that thousands of students take part in. There are multiple levels of FIRST; in high school, students take part in FRC (FIRST robotics competition). As part of an FRC team, teams get six weeks to build a robot to compete in a challenge that is announced the first Saturday in Jan. Here in Michigan we have 411 teams, more than any other state in the country. Michigan takes part in the district system, where teams compete at two dis-
tricts, and then after the district points are tallied up, teams get the chance to compete at the Michigan State Championship. At this championship, 102 of the best teams in the state spend three exhilarating days competing. The MSC is known as the hardest competition in all of FRC. From there, the top 62 teams are invited to attend the World Championship in St. Louis. That is where 600 teams compete, to finally name the champion. My team, Team 1718 The Fighting Pi, an 11 year old team out of Armada has been able to establish ourselves as an elite team in the state of Michigan. At the Waterford district, we ranked fourth out of 40 teams. After qualification matches are played, teams take place in alliance selections, where alliances of three teams are assembled to battle it off in the eliminations. Here, the second ranked alliance captain, 2137, selected us to play with them, along with 245. Our alliance fought valiantly until we were knocked out in the semifinals. We were also honored to

We ranked second, and were selected by the first seeded team, 33, who also selected 5068. After six tough matches, we were crowned the victors of the Troy Competition. When we thought the day couldn’t get any better, 1718 was awarded the Chairman’s Award. The Chairman’s award is the most prestigious award a team can win. The award also auto qualifies the winning team for the State Championship. At the MSC, our team had their fair share of disappointments. With our robot breaking multiple times, and alliance mishaps, 1718 ranked 72 out of the 102 teams competing. When we though all hope was gone, during the alliance selections, we were chosen as the third robot for the second seeded alliance. Competing with 27 and 67, both very good teams who had won the MSC before, we were hopeful for a good outcome. Similarly to the qualifications, our robot had some issues, but we powered through to the finals. After the first finals match, our robot’s drive train broke and we had to bring in a backup robot. 6086, a rookie team took our spot on the field, and after two more rough, yet exciting matches, we were named the champions of the MSC. This was our first
Unraveling three common superstitions
Paraskevidekatriaphobia is a very real word and it is the fear of Friday the 13th. Many consider Friday the 13th as the most unlucky date on the calendar. Fortunately Alana Carl Copy Editor
Bless you
Ever wonder why it is polite to say “bless you,” when someone sneezes? Well, according to people. howstuffworks.com, the myth originated awhile ago and it was thought to be that either when people sneezed it was possible for either their soul to leave their body or for an evil spirit to enter their body and that the simple solution to the problem would be to say “bless you.” Well, can you really blame ancient people for believing that? Some people sneezes’ are pretty ferocious. A more modern thought is that people’s hearts stop when they sneeze. Fortunately that is not the case. What probably is the case is that the person sneezed because of an incoming cold or because of allergies. So, in reality, it would be a better idea to actually recommend your favorite allergy or cold medicine. But since that would take too long, “bless you,” would have to work. So, remember to not break mirrors and to always say, “Bless you.” But, if you are an animal lover, it just might be a good idea to get a black cat. The rumor is that they are very cuddly, plus it could be seen as rebellious to get a cat that flies in the face of common superstition.
for us, there were only two Friday the 13ths and they passed in Jan. and May respectively. While not much is not known on the origins on Friday the 13th, except that the only thing people fear more than Friday the
time winning the MSC, and we were also awarded the prestigious entrepreneurship award. After the competition, we were ranked sixth in the state, and are on our way to the World Championship in St. Louis. St. Louis has been the home to the FIRST World Championship since 2011. The city has been welcoming, and has seen the growth of the Championship. With 600 teams, and a sub division setup of 8 fields, each team got to play 10 qualifying matches and ranked for the eliminations. With a record of 9-1, we were ranked sixth. Unfortunately our alliance was beat in the quarterfinals. Even though we lost early on, it was an amazing experience and we are very happy for the winning teams. The crowd then gathered to watch the final matches on Einstein. This is when the winning alliance of each field plays off to finally announce the winner. Will.i.am attended the competition, and has expressed his overwhelming support for FIRST robotics, believing that we are the future. Through my four years in high school, being on the Fighting Pi has been one of the most life-changing experiences. I have loved my time on the team, and encourage people to take part in or support a FIRST team.
13th is the number 13, there are quite a number of other superstitions that have really intriguing origins and revealing facts. So in honor of the past Friday the 13th, here are three other common superstitions that are far less triggering to a large segment of the population.
Broken mirrors While breaking a mirror could be seen as insulting and seems to only happen in really dramatic movies, it must be said that many people see breaking a mirror as a big no-no. Because, while it would be punishment enough to have to pick up the shards, the superstition goes that whoever dares to break a mirror will have seven years of bad luck. Oddly enough, the superstition goes back to times even before mirrors were invented. According to psychiclibrary.com, the thought comes from that if you see your image reflected back to you distorted, something bad was bound to happen to you because inevitably, your soul was distorted too and based on ancient Roman interpretation, the body and soul changes and regenerates every seven years, so it will take exactly seven years to get things back into working order.
Amber Weller
Above: While many may not try it because of the mess it will make, the common legends speaks of more dire consequences for breaking a mirror than having to pick up the shards. Right: While this cat does seem cuddly, a lot of people seem to be cautious around black cats.
Black cats
Amber Weller
While it might be automatic to say “bless you” when someone sneezes, common legend tells of a darker path if one does not follow the common courtesy.
Unfortunately for cats of the darker shade, they are commonly believed to be bad luck and their popularity only rises on occasions such as Halloween. It is such an odd thing because in ancient Egypt they were pretty much celebrated as mini gods along with their other feline brethren and it was also a pretty serious crime to kill one. For black cats, the phrase guilty by association comes to mind. Black cats were either thought to be a witch’s’ familiar (an animal that was bound to be servants) or even to be a witch that turned into a black cat. But, according to livescience.org, around 81 million Americans have black cats and seem to have no adverse reactions. But, unfortunately for the black cats, the superstition still persist.

The curtain then began to open and part of cast started singing the Rydell Alma Mater. It made me feel like I belonged to the class of 1959. Opening the play the way drama teacher Angela Houghton did, made the audience feel involved with the play and that they were right on stage singing and dancing along with Sandy, played by senior, Alyssa Schultz, and Danny Zuko, played by junior Tyler Street. Graduation is the day seniors get to say “We made it!” and then dive into discovering who they want to be, and what they want to do with their lives. Many seniors traditionally add to the celebration by decorating their graduation caps. Decorating a cap is a way to show one’s individuality while walking across the stage, and can also be used as a “visual goodbye” to high school. Claire Allen (Kastner), a class of 2015 graduate, expressed her thoughts on what decorating her cap meant to her. “I wanted mine to represent where I was heading in life, and even though I may be a year late I’m still following through with that dream.” Allen said. Then use hot glue to attach the paper to the surface. Also, any supplies needed can be found at craft stores such as Joann Fabrics or Michaels. I have interviewed a few previous seniors who decorated their caps and they have some tips for today’s seniors to think about before decorating caps... “Map out your design before officially putting it on your cap, it will look much neater.” -Chad Radford, Class of 2014 “I’d say decorate with friends because it made it a lot more fun” -Amber Zundel class of 2015 “Just do whatever you think looks cool, or use a quote you like” -Tylor Roberts class of 2015 The year will be coming to a close for seniors very soon. RHS Life Sophomore races around the world
Most students here at RHS are student athletes and participate in different sports while others are students athletes outside of school and participate in other things. A sophomore here at RHS, Loren Burns, does inline speed skating. Inline speed skating is the roller sport of racing on inline skates. 250 years ago, skating started in Belgium and a guy by the name of Merlin created the roller skate. By 1840, this was a big hit in Germany and young girls would use that as there way of transportation. By 1980, the inline skate began to shape, two brothers redesigned it to skate for hockey and then changed the wheels and added a brake for skating just like the rollerblades we now Sarah Allen Copy Editor
have today. Burns began inline speed skating at 12 years old. He has always enjoyed skating, and today loves the sport. Burns would just skate around for fun as a child but four years ago he had the interest to try speed skating. When he tried the sport of line speed skating, he joined the team “The Wolverines” with 25-30 people on his team. Burns participates in practice about four to five times a week at Great Skate and has meets about once a month competing against 10 different teams. Even on his days off, he does training and works at this every day. For his training he uses no weights and only does intense cardio and some drill skating. Burns has been to nationals every year
for inline speed skating which is all over the United States. He also has international competitions but has been there only once. Burns funded money to go to Belgium for his international competition. “Spending two weeks in Europe was great and I could live and experience life there,” Burns said. Burns was the only one there skating from his team to represent America and competed against 30 other countries in 2015. From the internationals meet, he got 15 place out of 62. From all these different competitions he has a couple hundred medals and is devoted to his sport. “This sport is a lot of self-punishment and you have got to want it,” Burns said.
Curiosity of Flanders Grand Prix Sophomore Loren Burns pushes his way to the end of his race.
Burns has personally trained and skated with Olympian Jilleanne Rookard and Joey Mantia, Bart Swings who
are world class skaters themselves. He dreams to compete at a world class level and continue to compete internationally to become the best skater
he can be indoors and outdoors. Burns wants to compete in the Olympics and see where that path takes him.

The team has a record of four wins and two losses half way through the season, and will look to add more wins throughout the second half of the season, while also training the young underclassmen how to get better throughout their high school careers. V: The two time defending division champion Panthers varsity baseball team were coming into the spring with high hopes and lots of potential, as they looked to win a third straight division title. The boys are off to a swinging start to the season, having a record of eight wins and two losses. The Panthers have had some close, tough losses, and also some big wins. In a recent home game against Sterling Heights, the team was down 5-0 late in the game, and put on a six run comeback to defeat the Stallions, by a score of 6-5. Halfway through the season, the Panthers are looking good for a three peat. The team competes hard day in and day out, and looks to finish the season hard in the second half of the season. “Throughout the season, we have become a family and that is what is most important when it comes to a team. The goals we have set for ourselves are so close within reach that in the end we will achieve them,” junior Rachel Orler said.

TTWTT: NBA approves ads on jerseys; fans in uproar For the past number of years, rumors had been flying around the National Basketball Association (NBA) that advertisement on team jerseys will Troy Frank become a thing in the year, 2020. Numerous companies that are sponsored by NBA T.V. broadcasts were involved in the talks, including KIA, who Sports Editor Tony Dombrowski wanted their company’s logo to be featured on the players’ jerseys during preseason, regular season, and playoff games. The talks had been high and low, with many pros and many cons. Finally, on Friday, April 15, NBA commissioner Adam Silver announced that the league will become the first Sports Editor major United States professional sports association to have advertisements on team’s jerseys. This announcement came as no surprise to some, and quite the shock to others. Some fans of the league are now left excited for this decision; however, the majority of people think this is a terrible move by the NBA, including us.
Tony: Even though they are not one of the four major United States professional sports associations, the Major League of Soccer (MLS) was the only sports league/association in the United States to advertise companies’ logos on their jerseys. Even though I do not watch too much MLS soccer, I do, however, feel they went over the top with the advertisements on jerseys. The ads cover the whole jersey, and you really do not even know what team is who because the team’s
name is not even on it. It is a very confusing system, and I really hoped that a major US sports association would never adopt the ads on jerseys policy. Unfortunately, the NBA has adopted it, and will put it in effect within the next few seasons. I cannot bash the idea too hard right now because I have not seen evidence that shows they will go the same route as the MLS. However, if they do, it will not be fun for this fan, seeing KIA logos all over the jersey instead of
Troy: the team’s logo. It is already very confusing on the soccer field, and I hope that it will not be confusing on the court too.
Ads are ok when taken in moderation, but when it comes to the NBA, they are, instead blown out of proportion. There is an ad sponsoring replays, broadcasts, balls,

If you were to have yet another form of advertisement worked in, that might be the straw that breaks the camel’s back. There is already a total of an hour worth of commercials, so another ad on the most profitable team merchandise will almost certainly tell the fans that the league has sold out. When FIFA does it, it looks grotesque. The name of the team is nowhere to be found, leaving the only identification of the team being the design and color scheme of the jersey. Does Manchester City or
FC Barcelona even have team names? I am pretty sure they are just called Manchester City and FC Barcelona. If you were to ask to pick which team was which in a match, you would have no way to tell unless pointed out to you by someone or by a color coded scoreboard in the corner. The NBA would not have that privilege, however, because there are four, count them, FOUR teams with a red, white, and blue color scheme. The Washington Wizards, Philadelphia 76ers, New Orleans Pelicans, and your very own Detroit Pistons would bewilder and confuse any newcomers watching a game between them.
