Parkdale Film & Video Showcase open for submissions Filmmakers, here’s your chance to shine – and make Parkdale shine, too. The Parkdale Film & Video Showcase (PFVS), a four-day festival that presents and celebrates the work of Parkdale’s creative community through film and video screenings, critical discussions, installations and performance, is looking for

submissions for its 2014 edition. The festival takes place Aug. 7 to 10. According to a release, this year’s team is looking for work that critically explores the Canadian pastime of drinking. The release said there are two interconnected occurrences: the many drug and alcohol scandals involving Toronto’s municipal

politicians and the increase of bars in Parkdale over the last few years. “Alcohol consumption is a cornerstone of most North American social gatherings. However, it can shake the foundation of any family, community or even city when someone’s drinking becomes destructive,” the release said.

Participants should submit works that “utilize a formal or thematically alternative approach in order to create a unique perspective on this subject matter.” People do not have to reside in Parkdale to submit. The deadline to submit is May 26 at 11:59 p.m. Visit http:// parkdaleshowcase.ca

The City of Toronto advises that the Dufferin Street Bridge is expected to re-open for vehicular traffic the week of April 7. The pedestrian and cyclist access is open, and is on the east side of the bridge only. A new pedestrian controlled signal crossing has been installed at the north end of the bridge to assist pedestrians to cross from the TTC loop and west side Dufferin St. to the east side pedestrian bridge. The lights will only turn red when a pedestrian pushes the button to cross. The office of Councillor Gord Perks advises that the no-left turn restriction at Liberty Street and Dufferin Street will be removed once Dufferin Street is open to vehicular traffic. Updates on this project at www.toronto.ca/involved/ projects/dufferinbridge until april 16 to switch sides wwait

If you live on a street where permit parking called for switching to the other side of the street on April 1 – don’t. Wait until April 16. The city is requesting that because of the heavy snow and ice accumulation this winter, extra time is needed to ensure it’s completely melted. A city release said Toronto Police Service ticketing for this offence will not begin until April 16 at 9 a.m.

e’d like to extend an invitation to the family caregivers. Metroland Media Toronto is proud to be the founding producer of The Caregiver Show, to be held May 14 at the Direct Energy Centre. As many as eight million Canadians are family caregivers. It’s not uncommon for people to care for family members or friends in shortor long-term need. In fact, it is so common we don’t tend to identify ourselves as caregivers. But caregiving is a challenge. Caregiving is a commitment. It’s often fraught with worry, built on unflinching dedication and often carried out with little respite. It’s important for caregivers to know there are resources available to them to help in challenging times. The Caregiver Show has three main goals: to provide caregivers with information; to provide the opportunity

Kids and feral cats share love of ‘litter-a-ture’ Dundas West Animal hospital program fosters volunteering and reading skills in children LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com Ve t e r i n a r i a n Dr. S c o t t Bainbridge and his client Julia Gallagher – one-time Grade 5 classmates – can take credit for creating a program that helps kids improve their reading skills while providing homeless kittens some extra love and attention. Inspired by a similar program she heard was offered at an animal shelter in Pennsylvania, Gallagher approached her old friend a n d p e t’s ve t e r i n a r i a n Bainbridge about introducing it at his Dundas West Animal Hospital as part of the clinic’s community outreach activities. Intrigued by the idea, Bainbridge launched the Kitty-Litter-a-ture program last month. The program invites local elementary school students to volunteer their time caring for homeless cats that have been placed up for adoption. After they feed the kittens and clean their litter boxes,

the children then pick out a book to read to their new feline friends. “It’s a win-win, where the kids get to volunteer their

time, hone their reading skills and the cats get some extra cuddling and socialization in a program that helps to promote the fact that they

are looking for a home,” said Bainbridge, who told The Villager he is always looking for ways to promote his clinic’s cat adoption initia-

tive. Affiliated with Toronto Cat Rescue, the Dundas West Animal Hospital on Dundas Street West at Roncesvalles Avenue, has found homes for as many as 100 kittens. Currently, there are two kittens, about four months of age, seeking forever homes. Kitty-Litter-a-ture’s goal is to help promote the adoption of homeless cats, teach children the value of responsible pet ownership, and foster a love of reading. So far, children have been clients’ children and students from nearby Howard Park P.S. They come in pairs as reading buddies, accompanied by a parent or guardian. “The cats look like they’re listening,” quipped Bainbridge. “It’s a great way to socialize the (former) feral cats.” Ga l l a g h e r, a m o t h e r of three who lives in Roncesvalles Village and also Bainbridge’s neighbour, discovered the American

program through Facebook and immediately thought of Bainbridge. Her 12-year-old daughter has volunteered at his clinic and wants to be a vet. “Getting my kids to read has often seemed like a chore, but getting them to snuggle with kittens is never a problem,” she said. “To see kids actually sit down with a book outside of school time seems to be an increasingly rare event, so it’s wonderful to have a program that not only allows for this to happen, but also introduces kids to the idea of volunteering within their community. A love of animals is a great thing to nurture too.” It just “checks so many boxes – you can’t lose,” she said. The Kitty-Litter-a-ture program runs every Tuesday from 4 to 5 p.m. at the Dundas West Animal Hospital, 2160 Dundas St. W.

Scadding community centre gardening program growing JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com Scadding Court Community Centre has long offered a gardening programming with an eye to feeding those in need. The centre has added a new greenhouse made out of an old shipping container, matching the style of its Market 707 vendors. The greenhouse was donated by Giant Container Services and was officially launched at Scadding’s Seedy Saturday event in March. “We started by planting seeds in it on Seedy Saturday and we’ll use it to grow seedlings that we can plant out in the community or sell at a plant sale,” said Scadding Court community and urban agriculture worker Krista Fry. “It extends our growing season to 10 months out of the year.” The greenhouse measures 20 feet by eight feet. It will

be fitted with a shade cloth in summer to facilitate the growing of hot weather plants and a heating blanket in the fall to help green, leafy plants grow. Fry noted the planting schedule has already been determined for much of the year. “We started with eggplant, which needs a longer growing season, and we’ll do tomatoes and peppers next. After that, we’ll plant cucumbers, pumpkin and squash,” she said. The first Seedy Saturday saw more than 400 eggplant seeds planted, of which Fry is hopeful 300 to 350 will actually sprout. Once the seeds become seedlings, they will be transported to a large garden plot in Alexandra Park, where community volunteers will tend to them. “We have a huge 1,500-foot garden plot where volunteers grow food for the local food

bank and our hot meals program,” Fry said. Proceeds from the plant sale will go back to Scadding’s gardening program, while

additional food grown there will go toward after-school programs and community meals. The sheer volume of plants

grown will allow the greenhouse to keep itself going in perpetuity. Seeds from some of the food grown will be used to plant again next year, with

some additional seeds going to help other communities. “ We’ve sent seeds to Palestine to a refugee village, and we’ve sent seeds to Haiti,” Fry said. The new greenhouse will also serve other uses said Scadding Court Community Centre manager of development and community engagement Nikki Toten. “We’ll be able to store a lot of equipment in there,” she said. “It will also be something (local park advocacy group) Friends of Alexandra Park will be able to use.” Toten said Scadding has had use of a greenhouse for years, but pointed out that it was no longer suited for growing. “It was dilapidated,” she said. “It’s been held together by duct tape for a while now.” For more information on the program or to volunteer, call 416-392-0335 or email kristaf@scaddingcourt.org

Celebrating our spring initiatives

Write us

I

t may actually be that spring has sprung. Excuse us for taking this rare opportunity to use this space to talk about a few spring initiatives we at The Parkdale Villager have underway. First and foremost, we’d like you to take a look at our caregivershow.ca website, promoting our upcoming very special day at the Direct Energy Centre. You’ll be hearing a lot in the coming weeks about this show, aimed at being a resource and a respite for family caregivers. We don’t all consider ourselves family caregivers, but in truth, one in four cares for a family member or friend who has some form of short or long-term incapacity. At The Caregiver Show, on May 14, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., there will be sessions on caring for family members, an opportunity to learn about resources available to help caregivers, and an opportunity to our view meet people in the same circumstance for friendship and empathy. yes, we want to offer a little New season And pampering for caregivers as well. It’s a free day. For more informabrings new tion and to register, please go to opportunities the caregivershow.ca website. On a different spring note, you may have noticed information on UsedToronto.com, our latest platform for family-friendly classifieds. It’s time to clean out those closets, basements and garages and make a little money. What’s old to you can be new to someone else this spring. A third initiative is our new portal celebrating Toronto’s interest in the upcoming World Cup. Go to parkdalevillager.com and in the rotating carousel of eight stories, you’ll see one takes you to our World Cup pages. Have a favourite soccer team? Are you a blogger? We’d love to hear from you. So apologies once again to expand in this space on how we’re dealing with spring. But we thought it was useful information. The Caregiver Show is a tremendous and rare opportunity for family caregivers. We hope you’ll pass it along to someone in need. UsedToronto is a practical solution to spring cleanup. And then, perhaps the joy of summer activities in some neighbourhoods will be the celebration of this year’s World Cup, June 12 to July 13. Teams from 32 countries will battle it out for world soccer supremacy at this year’s tourney in Brazil and we have passionate Toronto residents following each team. Enjoy your spring and enjoy the city!

Safety at city hall: the three-sided story

A

s I write this the morning of April 1, reporters and cameras are camped outside the mayor’s office, waiting for our chief magistrate to show up for council. It is antsy business, for more reasons than April Fool’s Day worries: encounters with the mayor at city hall are chancy operations. Ford makes it difficult. Sometimes, he breaks into a run. A couple of weeks ago, when reporters and cameras were following him in from a hot dog run in Nathan Phillips Square, the mayor called a charge through reporters lining a public staircase, knocking down a photographer. He was closely accompanied by city hall security, as he often is – with security imposing themselves between photographers and the mayor, and at one point, asking reporters to stop shouting questions. The same guard was

david nickle the city bowled over himself in the crush. The situation was hardly a safe one for anyone in city hall at the time. Reporters and camera people were in immediate harm’s way, but so too were members of the public, attempting to access city hall. The mayor might also have harmed himself, although he seemed to feel he had the matter under control. Now, no one was seriously hurt – or at least says that they were. But the goings-on at city hall between the mayor, the press and security are an ongoing worry. Late last year, when the mayor was losing his power, security in council chambers stood by while the mayor bumped into city councillor Pam McConnell as he ran across the floor

of council, and allowed the mayor’s driver Jerry Agyemang to photograph members of the public in an intimidating way while the Ford brothers goaded them on. It is interesting to note that last week, while I was attempting to photograph Porter Airlines president and CEO Robert Deluce making a deputation in council chambers from the same angle, security put a stop to it. It is clear there are different sets of rules for the public and the press – even councillors – and members of the mayor’s personal staff. As a matter of disclosure, when I’m not writing this column, I’m serving as president of the City Hall Press Gallery, and trying to deal with these matters. I do so with some sympathy for at least two of the three sides. As journalists, we have to be able to ask difficult questions and confront city politicians

with uncomfortable truths. That’s not negotiable. And yet the situation that city hall security find themselves in these days is unprecedented: looking after the safety of everyone in city hall, with a chief magistrate that demands they double as a personal guard and has been known to behave erratically. It is an awful situation. But at least until the election and quite possibly beyond, it’s a situation that will persist. As I finish writing this column, Ford has arrived at city hall. When reporters asked him where he might have been, he responded by pushing through the throng and grabbing the lens of a camera held by a CTV cameraman, pushing it away and disappearing into his office. It’s hardly an incident to inspire feelings of security.

Planter to brighten Parkdale corner A tiny bit of community improvement on the corner of Wilson Park Road and King Street West will bloom this spring In the fall, a small circular planter was constructed on a bump at King Street West and Wilson Park. The idea came from the community, including architect and area resident David Oleson, when neighbours saw the city doing work in the area and identi-

fied an opportunity to create some green space. “It is a little victory,” Oleson said. “To the city’s credit, they came forward with a proposal for an oval planter that still preserves the sidewalk.” The planter will feature hardy shrubs and flowers including black-eyed Susans, Japanese yews and day lilies. The first planting will take place in the spring.

Pa r k d a l e - H i g h Pa r k Councillor Gord Perks said it is indicative of the Parkdale area that neighbours would see a concrete slab and speak out to help create something more. “We are really lucky in Parkdale that we have an awful lot of thoughtful people who understand the beauty of small things and are willing to do the work to make them happen,” Perks said.

ROM celebrates its centenary JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com

After 100 years as a Toronto landmark, the Royal Ontario Museum (ROM) is hardly showing its age. The institution marked its 100th birthday with a celebration recently, giving a nod to its past but also looking toward an interactive future. ROM Director and CEO Janet Carding noted the anniversary marked an impressive milestone. “It’s a day to remember the museum’s founders and their vision to build a museum which should belong to the people,” she said. “For a century, the ROM has been making groundbreaking discoveries, leading innovative research, broadening our perspectives on the world and connecting communities.” She pointed out the ROM team was looking to expand its programming further through technology and interactivity. The museum will host special events and celebrations in the coming

In April, the ROM will celebrate the volunteers, while May will allow two chances of a behind-the-scenes look at the ROM: “... for the first time in its history, without having to come on a special group guided tour, you’ll be able to experience the whole ROM – the conservation workshops, the DNA labs, the teaching suites, the libraries and of

The two funds will be made possible through the museum’s new Love the ROM fundraising campaign. seeks input on museum renewal wCity

transit april fool’s day wA bold funding gag by ttc new funding strategy

Union Pearson Express Traction Power Substation NOTICE OF COMPLETION Draft Environmental Study Report

Hydro One Networks Inc. (Hydro One) has completed the draft Environmental Study Report (ESR) for the Union Pearson (UP) Express Traction Power Substation Project. Metrolinx is proposing to electrify the UP Express service from Union Station in the City of Toronto to Pearson International Airport in the City of Mississauga. A separate Environmental Assessment Study is being carried out by Metrolinx for this project, in accordance with O. Reg. 231/08 – Transit Project Assessment Process. Hydro One is seeking approval for the Traction Power Substation, which will be connected to Ontario’s electrical system. This substation will convert the voltage from 230 kV to 25 kV so that it can be used to power electric trains. The project area is shown on the map below.

announced by the TTC Tuesday will see stations with less ridership shuttered and sold to developers to construct high-density subway platform condos. Chester and Bessarion stations were among those on the chopping block. TTC chief customer Chris Upfold and communications chief Brad Ross explained the plan to TTC users in a short web video. If it all sounds like a joke, that’s because the “plan” was part of an April Fool’s Day gag intended to highlight something the TTC believes is no laughing matter: the lack of stable, long term funding for the transit commission. changes wTheService announced by TTC TTC also announced (for real) changes to multiple lines that will see increased vehicle frequency on some routes and reduction or outright cancellation of service on others. The changes took effect this week and are part of a regular TTC service review. For details on the changes, visit www.ttc.ca Transit seasonal schedwGOGO ule changes Transit also announced sea-

As of this Saturday, GO will boost service on all its seven train lines and many bus routes. A group of aspiring youth political leaders are taking part in a debate this week at the University of Toronto’s Munk School of Global Affairs. Representatives from the four major provincial parties were expected to take part in From the Boardroom to the Dorm Room, scheduled for Wednesday. The debate was organized by the Greater Toronto CivicAction Alliance and intended to stimulate discussion on improving commute times for university students in the GTA, which, according to a press release, often exceeds the region’s daily average of 82 minutes per day.

NOTICE OF COMPLETION Environmental Project Report THE PROJECT Metrolinx has completed an Environmental Project Report (EPR) in accordance with Ontario Regulation 231/08 for the Union Pearson (UP) Express Electrification project. Metrolinx is proposing to electrify the UP Express service beginning at the future UP Express Union Station in the City of Toronto and terminating at the future UP Express Pearson Station (at Terminal 1, Toronto Pearson International Airport) in the City of Mississauga. The project involves the electrification of approximately 25 kilometres of track along the Union Station GO Rail Corridor and Kitchener GO Rail Corridor to Highway 427, where the route then follows the new UP Express spur line (under construction) into Pearson Airport (see key map below). The purpose of the project is to convert the UP Express service from diesel to electric power, which will be achieved through a Traction Electrification System that will provide electrical power to the trains by means of a power distribution system. An Overhead Contact System (wiring system) will be suspended from a number of support structures (i.e. portals, cantilevers) placed along and over the track. Two paralleling stations and a new maintenance facility are also required. In addition, a separate Environmental Assessment study is being carried out by Hydro One for the proposed Traction Power Substation, in accordance with the Class EA for Minor Transmission Facilities. Electrification of the UP Express is part of The Big Move, Metrolinx’s regional transportation plan, which will dramatically improve how people move in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area. Funding for electrification is dependent on the Metrolinx Investment Strategy. THE PROCESS The environmental impact of this transit project was assessed and an Environmental Project Report prepared in accordance with the Transit Project Assessment Process (TPAP) as prescribed in Ontario Regulation 231/08, Transit Projects and Metrolinx Undertakings.
