Instrument library right step in making Toronto a music city A new pilot project that allows library patrons to borrow a musical instrument simply with their library card is a big step in the right direction.

The Sun Life Financial Musical Instrument Lending Library officially launched this past week at the Parkdale library, now giving the opportunity for aspiring musicians to sign out instruments ranging from violins and guitars to a fullsize keyboard and a banjo. It’s a step in the right direction in making music more accessible to the community especially for the youth as well as those who can’t afford to buy good-quality instruments. Just as several organizations have seen the value in youth playing sports

by subsidizing expensive equipment, this program shines a light on the value of youth playing music to enrich their lives. It’s also a step in the right direction in making Toronto a music city by cultivating homegrown talent. I t wa s f i t t i n g that in attendance at the launch event were two successful Canadian musicians – Juno Award-winning artist Chantal Kreviazuk and her husband, Our Lady Pe a c e f ro nt m a n Raine Maida. Maida told Metroland Media Toronto that he didn’t have access to musical instruments until his brother bought one when he was 12 years old. NE

Toronto lost some of the party’s most historically secure seats. The same year, Olivia Chow – Layton’s widow and partner in politics and life – turned a commanding lead in the polls to a third-place finish in the Toronto mayoralty race, with a campaign that did tack more to the left, but was timid and unambitious. And last year, Mulcair did much the same thing federally, when he led the party to a place somewhat to the right of the Liberals, and predictably, collapsed. It was enough to wipe the slate clean for New Democrats in Toronto. Now there seems to be strong interest in the grassroots of the party in turning back to its progressive roots, embracing as many members have, the so-called Leap Manifesto, which urges the party to return to its environmentalist, socially- and economically-inclusive roots. But don’t count out the lure of power to eclipse conscience. Alberta New Democrat Premier Rachel Notley is still providing a lone successful example of the pragmatism that has proved so toxic to the party. At the convention, she provided a reminder the only way to make that stick for more than one term is to lighten up on the pipeline opposition. You’d like to think that in this age of surging U.S. presidential hopeful Bernie Sanders and “Sunny Ways” Justin Trudeau, the original Canadian party of hope and social justice and change would be in an unambiguous position to capitalize on the mood, and maybe use that to take their shot at forming a serious progressive government one day. Instead, the NDP is tangled in its own ambitions. Disentanglement will take time, and when it’s over, who’s to say what will be standing in its place?

To ensure more kids have that opportunity to play music, Maida and Kreviazuk donated a guitar and keyboard of their own to add to the 100 instruments already in collection. The community can support this initiative, too. Residents can donate their own gently used or new musical instruments to this pilot program, which runs until the end of 2017, and help it grow and expand to libraries across the city. There’s a Musical Instrument Donation Drive, which continues until May 7, and things are off to a great start. Calls have already come in from people wanting to donate such instruments as bongo drums, French horns, flutes, erhu (Chinese fiddle) and midi controllers. Library staff noted more diverse instruments from different cultures are welcome. Call 416-393-7686 for details or to donate.

Last weekend, the New Democratic Party membership did what is unthinkable among mainstream Canadian party politics and ousted their leader Tom Mulcair. The shockwaves carried across the land: the NDP, stalwart voice of Canadian progressive thinking, is in crisis! Of course, the NDP has been in crisis for years and particularly for those of us watching from Toronto. Although you certainly can’t blame the late Jack Layton, it’s easy to mark the beginning of that crisis with the former federal NDP leader’s electoral success and then his death, both in 2011. The NDP was briefly the Official Opposition in Ottawa. As Stephen Harper’s Conservatives used their majority government to alienate much of the country, the NDP became a de-facto government in waiting. But it wasn’t just that collection of newly elected MPs that walked away with expectations raised. Layton himself offered inspiration from his death bed. Love, he told the country, is better than anger. Hope is better than fear and optimism, better than despair. New Democrats at least politically, cherry-picked: Optimism and hope, that the party that had traditionally been a third-party left-of-centre conscience, might persuade voters to allow them to lead; and also fear, that if they led too much with their left-ofcentre conscience then they’d never win. It was a bad and self-destructive lesson. The Ontario NDP forced a costly provincial election in 2014, rejecting in conscience the most left-of-centre provincial budget that a Liberal government had ever put forward. Leader Andrea Horwath made some gains for the party, but in

Q&A

Hilary Caton hcaton@insidetoronto.com

| APR 14 2016

@Parkdale_V

Alexandra Feswick has been the chef de cuisine at the Drake Hotel, 1150 Queen St. W. since 2014. Before signing on to the Drake, she graduated from chef school at George Brown College and worked at restaurants such as the Wine Bar, Brockton General and Samuel J. Moore. Feswick competed against three other chefs from across Canada in the Grate Canadian Cheese Cook-Off, Mac & Cheese Edition. Chefs competed in pairs and had 20 minutes to create a delectable mac and cheese dish with Canadian cheese. She emerged victorious with her Nutty Home-Style Mac & Cheese. Here’s our Q&A with the mac and cheese champion:

6

Q: Congrats on your win, how does it feel? A: It feels good to win. Everyone brought such a different mac and cheese to the competition that it could have gone either way.

Staff photos/HILARY CATON

Q: Have you competed in anything like this before? A: I’ve competed once before for a Daily Bread Food Bank fundraiser. It was a different premise. I got a hamper and I had to cook a meal out of what was in there as if I were a recipient of the hamper. And I won

that competition, too, so now I feel like I have a lot to live up to. Q: Mac and cheese is considered a comfort food, what is your favourite comfort food? A: I think a grilled cheese sandwich is more of a comfort food for me, but something with cheese in it for sure. But then there’s Campbell’s soup on top of chicken. It’s a classic comfort for me because that is something we had all the time growing up and we still eat it on occasion at home. Q: What is your favourite Canadian cheese? A: Niagara Gold. It’s a semi-firm cheese and it’s got a nice nutty flavour and I just love the saltiness of it. You could melt it, you can eat it by itself; by itself with some charcuterie would be fantastic. Q: Tell us when and how you were first introduced to mac and cheese. A: I’m pretty Canadian through and through in terms of what we ate at home; and my mom, I was really lucky that she made everything from scratch so I started off with that real mac ‘n’ cheese experience right off the bat. Bringing to a home near you Mark Livingston’s work featured on Colin and Justin’s Cabin Pressure and Property Brothers When you think barn doors, horses and hay might come to mind. But for Mark Livingston, his customized sliding barn door creations make for a great centrepiece in bedrooms, bathrooms, and wherever else in the home a touch of added flare is desired. Starting up his business, Rebarn, with $100 in his garage in 2012, Livingston got a break in 2014 when his work was featured on television show Colin and Justin’s Cabin Pressure. More exposure came when he supplied furniture for HGTV show Property Brothers starring twin brothers Jonathan and Drew Scott, and again for the second season of Cabin Pressure. Now, Rebarn is back for the third season of Colin and Justin’s Cabin Pressure, which airs Sundays at 9 p.m. on Cottage Life. In this season, Colin and Justin are renovating a Haliburton cottage they purchased with the goal of renting it out. “We specialize in barn doors,” Livingston said of Rebarn, adding he’s created the sliding pieces for all three seasons of Cabin Pressure. “For the current season, I made a kitchen banquet, a bench and table, and a set of barn doors

for the master bedroom to close off the ensuite bathroom. Colin and Justin are awesome, they are great to work with.” And it appears the sentiments are mutual. “We’ve worked with Mark Livingston at Rebarn for years, and in that time he’s made many wonderful barn doors for our various projects, both on and off screen,” Colin and Justin said in an email to The Villager. “They are great monolithic sliding portals crafted from salvaged factory floors and decommissioned barns. During all three seasons of Cabin Pressure his work has been pivotal to our ‘modern rustic’ reveals. We’re suckers for a top notch artisan and Mark is precisely that; a quality craftsperson with an undeniable skill when it comes to furniture making and contemporary architectural design. We’re excited that Mark is now expanding his business beyond the company’s original Black Creek manufacturing studio and that he’s opening his first street front store on Toronto’s bustling Dupont. We wish him only the best.” Livingston uses salvaged lumber for his artisan studio to create one of a kind, hand-crafted custom furniture, barn doors, and hardware in rustic or contemporary looks. “We sell all over Canada and ship throughout Canada and the United States,” he said. “Doors are very popular right now. We have 65 doors on order. Sliding doors are functional stylish. A swinging door takes up space, sliding doors don’t.”

And the doors aren’t cheap, with the price ranging from $750 into the thousands. Customers will soon have a chance to check out Livingston’s collection in a brand new showroom opening at 1611 Dupont St., east of Dundas Street, in May. Rebarn’s current location 380 Alliance Ave., near Weston Road and Black Creek Drive, will serve as a workshop and warehouse, he said. “We want a collection people can physically see,” he said, adding customers attending the Alliance Avenue site would typically choose pieces from a computer screen. Considering all that’s happened to Livingston over four short years, it’s hard to believe his first sale was over Kijiji for a table he built in his garage. “It’s all grown organically,” he said of Rebarn, adding he’s turned down offers to appear on lesser known shows. “We don’t have any debt. There are seven employees, including me. We want to diversify our portfolio to include more modern pieces. We want to branch out into new territory and that’s what the new store is going to help us do.”
