CLEANING UP

HILARY CATON hcaton@insidetoronto.com

The City: David Nickle / 4

The orchestral sounds of the violin and cello will soon swell in the air at the Bonar-Parkdale Presbyterian Church, as Sistema Toronto gears up for its second annual Red Violin fundraising gala. “It’s shaping up to be quite an exciting event and it’s still in its infancy,” said executive and artistic director of Sistema Toronto, David Visentin. The 2015 gala will take place on Sunday and will have a wine and cheese reception, a silent auction, kids entertainment and, of course, a concert by Sistema Parkdale Children’s Orchestra. “It’s a chance to get the kids out of the gymnasium in the school, where they perform most often, and into the community, which is important for them,” Visentin said, adding there will also be performances by the Toronto-based, all-female Cecilia String Quartet; Shauna Ralston, an honorary music ambassador of Sistema Toronto, who will also be performing with a cello quartet; and electric violinist Eugene Draw. “It will be an action packed two and half hours,” Visentin said. HILARY CATON hcaton@insidetoronto.com The Toronto 2015 Pan Am/ Parapan Am Games will be taking over the city in less than three months, but with all the hype and excitement comes road and transportation challenges, especially for some busi-

nesses in the Parkdale area. To help navigate the businesses through what is expected to be a hectic time, TO2015 staff held an information session for business owners at the Parkdale Library, 1303 Queen St. W., last Thursday. “This is going to be the largest Pan Am and Parapan Am Games

ever,” said Aaron Glynwilliams, the senior manager of external partnerships and public affairs for TO2015 to attendees. “It’s bigger than the recent Vancouver Olympics and the Olympics held in Montreal in ’76.” The magnitude of the Games will have its effects on

getting around the city. This summer, between July 10 to 26 (Pan Am Games) and Aug. 7 to 15 (Parapan Am Games), Toronto and the greater Golden Horseshoe region will host 2,000 athletes from 41 countries, competing in 51 sports at 30 venues in 16 municipalities. >>>TO2015, page 6

Gala aims to top last year’s $10,000 >>>from page 1 surpass or match last year’s goal of $10,000. Although this is the second fundraising gala, Sistema Toronto’s Parkdale program has been in the community for the past four years. It works in partnership with Parkdale Junior and Senior Public School to provide Playing To Potential, a free after-school program that provides a child with their own violin, cello, viola, double bass or drums and a nutritious daily snack. The children in the program receive 10 hours of orchestral and choral instruction per week throughout the school year. According to Visentin, there are about 85 kids in the program in Parkdale. There is also a location at Yorkwoods Public School, in the Jane Street and Finch Avenue area. The Gala event is organized by the Sistema Toronto Parkdale Parents Committee as a way for parents to “pay it forward,” Visentin said.

The coordinator for the gala, Krysha Keith, couldn’t be happier to help make this gala happen as her daughter has been in the Parkdale program for four years playing the violin. “We (parents) all understand what an important program this is,” said Keith, who has about a dozen parent volunteers helping out. “It’s such an amazing program. We could never provide her something like this, it’s just completely out of our reach.” All proceeds from the gala are split between buying new instruments for new students that come into the program, for purchasing food for the daily snacks, as well as helping with the forthcoming Scarborough expansion of the program. “So much of the philosophy behind this program and other Sistema inspired programs is paying it forward and this whole level of responsibility and connection to those you don’t know,” said Visentin.

“It’s always important to think beyond the next hill to the next village and that’s what we’re trying to do. The big picture is this connection between the centres.” To help make that connection, students from both centres have played their instruments together at some point, in order for them to realize the work they do helps not just their program but sister programs too. “To have this amazing program come into our lives it’s amazing to us,” said Keith. The Red Violin Gala and concert will be held on Sunday from 1:30 to 4 p.m. at Bonar-Parkdale Presbyterian Church, 250 Dunn Ave. purchase tickets Tickets can be purchased at the door Gala tickets cost $50, and $10 for kids. Concert only tickets are $10 (starting at 3 p.m.). To reserve tickets call 416-545-0200.

PARC artists display their work at Gallery 1313 Monday HILARY CATON hcaton@insidetoronto.com Two community hubs are partnering for the first time to give Parkdale residents a chance to get their hands on one-of-a-kind art pieces, all for a good cause. Gallery 1313 and Parkdale Activity-Recreation Centre (PARC) have teamed up to host a collaborative fundraiser, InART: A Parkdale Pop Up Sale, on Monday, April 27. Artists from both PARC’s weekly art program and artists who have previously exhibited work at Gallery 1313 will have work for sale during a silent auction. “It’s a good way to connect with other community partners and we’re also investing in the arts and arts programming,” said Gallery 1313 owner Phil Anderson. “I also think it’s good awareness for the community’s residents and generally in the arts community to see what else is going on.”

PARC’s art program runs once a week from 5 to 8 p.m. and is facilitated by local artist Vladimir Prochazka, who offers guidance with painting and drawing. However, according to Anne Maureen McKeating, chair of PARC’s resource development committee, participants are able to work on their medium of choice without interruption. “The arts group’s primary focus is to encourage and support their artists and the development of their work,” she said. “It’s a way for people to get together in a communal space and just create.” One of the eight PARC artists showcasing their work is Chris Gordon, a King and Dufferin streets resident, who will have about eight pieces in the show that consist of clay scenes and sculptures in glass jars. Some have one sculpture and some have a two-sided scene. He began creating art in the past year and a half at the art program, after experiencing seizures five

years after he was hit by a train while working as part of a sound crew on a film set. He had broken ribs, fingers, multiple skull fractures, which caused a brain injury, and broke every bone

in his back, except his spine. “I was pretty broken for a long time, but the brain injury was the worst of it. I felt like an alien for five years until I started having seizures,” he said. “Once they happened, I started writing music and poetry and (making) these plasticine scenes. I was also able to function in a social setting again. It just woke me up.” In his exploration into the art world, Gordon started to create a series rooted in molds of real people’s teeth, thanks to his hygienist who provided the initial dozen, and incorporated it into the base of tree sculptures complete with eyes, a mouth and birds. “As soon as I started doing it, people started giving me molds of their teeth and asked me to make one for them. That’s how my commission started,” he said. “It’s some wild stuff, but I have so much fun doing it. It’s relaxing. It’s challenging. I try to see how much

detail I can stick in there without going overboard.” The door proceeds from the night will be split between PARC and Gallery 1313; the money will be used to keep the art program running at PARC, and will help the gallery continue to do its programming and community outreach. Also, all proceeds will go to the artists if the artwork sells for the minimum bidding price. Anything over that will be split 80/20, with the artists pocketing the 80 per cent. InART: A Parkdale Pop Up Sale takes over Gallery 1313 Monday, April 27 from 6 to 10 p.m. at 1313 Queen St. W.

AGO exhibit a dream come true for Stephen Andrews HILARY CATON hcaton@insidetoronto.com As a kid, local artist Stephen Andrews knew having your work displayed at the Art Gallery of Ontario (AGO) was the seal of approval he thought all established artists should have. As he got older, Andrews racked up decades of experience as he exhibited his work in Canada, the U.S., Brazil, Scotland, France, India and Japan. The Queen and Shaw streets area resident is even represented in the collections of the National Gallery of Canada, but this year he’ll finally get the seal of approval he always dreamed about. This spring Andrews will be displaying his largest solo exhibit to date – Stephen Andrews POV at the AGO. “The whole process has been incredible. There’s so many great artists in this town it’s hard to choose one over the other. So I feel really lucky that I got picked. It’s like I

won the lottery,” Andrews told The Villager. “The AGO was the gallery that if you were an artist that’s where you’d eventually have a show, so in terms of my own kind of goals and dreams I had when I was younger this was certainly part of it.” Andrews foray into the art world came through photography. He enrolled in the four-year program at Ryerson University in the 70s, but only completed two years, after realizing the program just wasn’t for him. “I didn’t want to shoot weddings or catalogues,” he said. “It wasn’t my thing, I was more interested in the art side of things.” From there he experimented with different materials and art forms and built a repertoire of skills from photography to painting, to creating installations. He never shied away from trying something new and it shows. This exhibit, curated by Kitty

Scott, the AGO’s curator of contemporary and modern art, pays special attention to his development as a painter and features loans from public and private collections, three works from the AGO collection and six new paintings from his Butterfly Effect collection that will make its debut at the exhibition. The pieces sample a wide range of Andrews’ artworks from the past 15 years, including installations, 22 large-scale paintings, photographs, sketchbooks, handmade ceramics as well as studio props. “This is really just the tip of the iceberg. There are hundreds and hundreds of works and I want to have it make sense, so I’m pulling out threads from different bodies of work and weaving them into a narrative that is this particular exhibition,” Andrews said. “Everything in this show is an artifact of a life lived.” Although the exhibit is a survey show of the last 15 years and picks up where his last survey show left off,

Photo/CRAIG BOYKO

International artist Stephen Andrews comes home with AGO exhibit, ‘Stephen Andrews POV’.

Andrews said there is an “internal logic” to the pieces chosen for his show and that their connection is a formal one. “It all seems like the material

aspects are so disparate that it’s not going to make sense, but the paintings are in dialogue with the photographs, the photographs are in dialogue with the animation side,” he said. “I think a lot of what connects the work is light and just being and questions about mortality.” The exhibit premiers April 23 and runs until Aug. 30, and will have a public opening Wednesday, April 22. Despite having done hundreds of shows, he admits he’s still a bit nervous about this one “It’s exciting, it’s scary. It’s not just a year’s body of work I’m showing. It’s 15 years. People are going to stand in judgement of half of my career, so it does make one a bit nervous,” he said. “But I’ve been an artists for 30 years, so I guess if I don’t have a thick enough skin now I’m never going to grow one.”

oronto’s new police chief, Mark Saunders, is going to be hearing from a lot of people telling him how he should do his job. The one voice he most needs to listen to is his own. He is a 32-year veteran of the Toronto Police Service, most recently serving as deputy chief. He also served in a number of high-profile units including guns and gangs and homicide. Saunders also makes history as being Toronto’s first black police chief. He said he understands many may view that as meaning he can magically improve the relationship between police and the black our view community, which has been strained due to the “carding” policy critics say unfairly targets New chef black youth in the city. However, needs be be he warned residents at his introductory press conference at visible police headquarters he does not have “superpowers.” Fair warning, and the right approach, we believe. Saunders has to be careful in these first few weeks about overpromising and making people think he will change things done by the outgoing chief, Bill Blair, that were considered unpopular. He needs to remember he is a police chief, not a politician. That, of course, won’t stop the politicians from coming after him if we won’t bend to their will. One area where Saunders can have an impact is by reaching into Toronto’s many different communities. Blair held numerous town hall meetings hosted by the different police divisions, which were usually well attended but rarely confrontational. This wasn’t enough to convince some of the city’s communities he was a chief of the people, understanding life in the streets. Saunders must get this message through. He must be highly visible to residents. He must show an intimate understanding of the daily challenges of life in marginal neighbourhoods and he must motivate the leaders in these communities to advocate on his behalf. Saunders should go a step further and attend town halls organized by youth groups and organizations representing different multicultural communities. Having visibility and compassion for circumstance will go a long way to winning the trust and respect in the neighbourhoods and communities where he needs it most.

Untangling the food truck compromise Our new mayor spent last year campaigning on a great many things, but one of John Tory’s earliest causes was also one of his most common-sensical. It boiled down to this: What the dickens is wrong with a food truck at the side of the road? Tory raised the issue about a year ago, when the notably mayor-free Toronto council was wrestling the deep philosophical question of how many food trucks can one fit on the doorstep of a restaurant. Council wasn’t sure. Owners of restaurants of the stationary variety thought there shouldn’t be any, as food trucks offered unfair competition. Food truck owners, meanwhile, called baloney, and pointed out that the rest of the world seemed to be able to sustain both fine dining establishments and roving food vendors. And demand for this kind of thing is growing

david nickle the city everywhere. In the end, council supported a twisting knot of a compromise: food trucks needed to operate no closer than 50 metres to the front of a restaurant, should they park in pay and display spots in the downtown. Tory offered tacit support for the policy as council approved it, but made it clear he thought food trucks should be encouraged rather than restricted. No more red tape, at least not very much. The food truck industry could use that kind of TLC. Over the past year, the restrictions of the original policy were such that only 17 new food trucks bothered to lay out for the $5,000-a-year license. On Tuesday, April 21, Toronto’s Licensing and

Food trucks do have one advantage, in that they can, if business goes sour in an area, pull up stakes and set up somewhere else.

Standards Committee took a baby step toward that vision, on the one-year anniversary of the approval of the new food truck bylaw. Licenses need not be year-‘round affairs, and sensible food-truck operators that really only want to operate in warmer months can purchase them for a bit less. Fifty metres becomes 30 metres as the minimum distance between restaurants and food trucks. Tory and council could stand to relax that distance regulation even further. Food truck operators

would of course be happiest with no distance requirements but would settle for 15 metres, opening up more possibilities for locations. All of which might make restaurant owners – particularly those with smaller restaurants that specialize in take-out – nervous about the competition. Food trucks do have one advantage, in that they can, if business goes sour in an area, pull up stakes and set up somewhere else. A failing brick-andmortar restaurant has no recourse but to close up. But restaurants on the edge have far more factors affecting them than the prospect of an RV-sized lunch counter pulling up outside for a few hours. And for the rest of us – a little more choice can only be a good thing.

Hot Docs premiere gives voice to the homeless HILARY CATON hcaton@insidetoronto.com Local documentary filmmaker Shelley Saywell is determined to share the stories behind the songs sung by the homeless on the streets and subways of Toronto. Her documentary titled Lowdown Tracks premiers at the 2015 Toronto Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival which runs April 23 to May 3 Set in the streets of Toronto, Saywell and musician Lorraine Segato of The Parachute Club follow the lives and voices of five homeless Torontonians, all of whom have very different stories with one common thread – music. It’s their original music that runs through the entire film, serving as the soundtrack to their life on harsh city streets. “One of the things we really wanted to do and hoped that we succeeded in doing was showing that these are people, with incredible stories, and

talent and passion and they deserve to be listened to,” Saywell said. “Everyone in the film has either been homeless, is homeless, or totally on the margin and there’s reasons for that.” With over a dozen documentaries under her belt that have taken her all over the world, and numerous international awards on her shelf, including an Emmy for outstanding investigative journalism, Saywell’s recent documentary about homelessness brought her back home to Toronto. According to Saywell, an Ossington Avenue and College Street resident, the inspiration for the film came after she attended a benefit concert coordinated by Segato a few years ago. Her band and a few others played, but the headliners were all homeless. When the concert ended and people were shuffling out in the cold and drifting out into the night the idea for the film began to

Filmmaker Shelley Saywell’s documentary ‘The Lowdown Tracks’ premieres at the 2015 Toronto Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival.

take form, she said. “I was just left wondering, what are their stories, how did they get there?” she said. “I wanted to know more.” In Lowdown Tracks, Saywell chose to follow five different stories that touch on abuse, struggles with addiction and electric shock therapy, including: Woody, who plays at the Jack Layton Ferry Terminal;

Katt Budd and Van Zant, who play in subway stations for commuters; Maryanne Epp, a busker who’s lived in shelters for seven years; and Bruce Bathgate, also a busker. Each one was found by different members of the production team, said Saywell, adding it wasn’t easy getting them to open up about their life and share how they ended

up on the streets. “It took time. Generally, the homeless are very private,” she said. “It was a process of hanging out, listening to them play, getting a coffee with them and I didn’t want to raise expectations, so I had to say, ‘look, this isn’t entirely a film about music or about busking. If you’ll agree to do the film this is really about opening up and telling us your story. And everybody thought about it. We didn’t rush anybody.” Saywell and her crew had to gain the trust of each person. She made sure she was available by phone whenever they had questions to help alleviate any distrust. “The thing that comes up over and over is that, ‘everything has been stolen from me.’ Whether it’s your physical property or your lyrics,” Saywell said. The film shows a harsh reality of homelessness in Toronto, from discussions of the number of homeless people who die every year

on the streets, to the pitfalls of homeless shelters. “I think a lot of it was difficult (to film),” Saywell admitted. “Emotionally it was hard, because you worry about everyone. We literally lost Bruce for a couple of months... It’s very emotional. Everybody was always in transition.” The film will screen at the Tiff Bell Light Box, Saturday, and all of the subjects plan to attend the premier to see the final product. Lowdown Tracks will also screen April 27 and May 2 at 6:30 p.m. at the Scotiabank Theatre. For more information on the HotDocs festival, visit www.hotdocs.ca

TO2015 has tips for businesses >>>from page 1 T h e Ga m e s a re a l s o expected to attract 250,000 visitors. About 60 per cent of the Games will be taking place in Toronto, Glynwilliams said. During this time, TO2015 staff is encouraging Torontonians to walk, cycle or take transit to their destinations, and avoid driving during rush hour if possible. For Mark Andrews, owner of Andrews Infrastructure, a civil engineering company that does sewer planning and asset management, he’s already begun planning his work schedule. “We’re basically being told to stay away, which is fine,” Andrews said. “Our work is involved on city streets anywhere throughout the city, so we’re going to restrict our areas of work outside of the city during the duration of the Games. “So we’re doing a lot of work on the west side of Etobicoke and the east side of Scarborough, so that crews

don’t have to come into the city.” But for business owner, and local Parkdale resident Ric Amis of MacTweek, a mobile IT support business, he relies on transportation, both his own and public to get to clients around the city. He said he is concerned with the influx of people and push for transit use, his response times to clients will be impacted. “I think it’s going to be a big issue. What am I to do? Take transit? I take it sometimes if they (clients) are close, but lately I haven’t because it takes me twice as long to get there,” Amis said. But for some business employees and staff that may not be efficient. “I’m looking at this and I’m going ‘Wow, OK,’ well, if transit isn’t going to be an option because everyone will be taking it and now you’re closing the roads, how will I get around?” TO 2 0 1 5 ’s Ke e p Yo u r Business Moving a Games

Travel Plan Guide, available at http://goo.gl/VDBcIB, offers ways for businesses to plan ahead, regarding shipments and deliveries through the “Four Rs of travel planning” framework. Re d u c e, re - t i m e, re mode and re-route. Each one reflects a way for businesses to adjust schedules of deliveries and shipments to off-peak hours, choose a less congested roadway, use other modes of transportation besides a vehicle and minimize overall the need to travel, the guide says. But for Amis, this strategy doesn’t completely apply to his mobile business. “With on-site tech support everything is immediate. The problems are as they happen; I can’t plan ahead. So it’s going to be hard for me to work around this schedule,” he said, adding he’ll have to scale back the number of calls to small businesses he takes during the Games.

Lowering your Car Insurance can have Devastating Results

et ready to pick your jaw off the floor. I am a personal injury lawyer who is encouraging you to spend more money on insurance coverage. It may seem strange given that I spend my days fighting against these very companies on behalf of injured plaintiffs. Let me explain why. Most people in Ontario have 1 million in coverage. Sounds like a lot right? It’s not at all. If you are in a car accident with minor injuries that is more than sufficient, however, if you are involved in an accident where you cause someone else major injuries (e.g. brain injury, paraplegic, quadriplegic) then you are on the hook personally for everything over that 1 million. This can have devastating

effects on both an emotional and financial level. You may think you are such a great driver that the Indy 500 is second from knocking down your door. Unfortunately, that doesn’t really matter. If some joe shmo (that is the legal term) hits you and you or your family member is injured badly, and good old joe has 1 million of coverage, you only have 1 million to access. Now, this is where it gets complicated so pay attention, if you have 2 million and he has 1 million, your insurer will kick in the extra million. So basically if your policy has 2 million you are covered for 2 million regardless of the insurance policy of joe shmo. Make sense? The best thing to do is speak with a broker. Make sure you have enough insurance to cover you if you are hit. Think about how much you would need if you could never work again. This is a very real possibility for some of my clients. Then once you have that number, make sure you are covered for that amount. Yes, insurance is already expensive, however saving money could cost you dearly later. New Canadians take oath HILARY CATON hcaton@insidetoronto.com

Tola Sar Year of Immigration: 2006 as an international student Origin Country: Cambodia Why did you want to become a Canadian citizen? For me, when I first came as an international student I only wanted to study English and then go back home and help my dad’s organization that helps people who are wounded from land mines, but I realized it’s more than just a country. It will provide a better life, a better future and more security when I travel.

Vibhu Gairola Year of Immigration: 2010 Origin Country: Singapore Why did you want to become a Canadian citizen? It seemed like the natural next step. My friends and family are here. Canada is so inviting and if you feel a sense of belonging I think taking the next step is natural. Plus I wanted to vote.

Ilda Bidollari Year of Immigration: 2008 Origin Country: Albania Why did you want to become a Canadian citizen? I just really wanted to be one. It’s a great country. I have friends and relatives here first and I got to know more about the standards and the lifestyle. All this pushed me to apply and, of course, my family. I’m very glad I did it. Today is a very special day. I’ve been looking forward to this for a while – more than three years.

Forty-four smiling faces – surrounded by proud family, friends and local politicians – gathered at Parkdale Collegiate Friday morning to take their Oath of Citizenship. The ceremony has never been hosted at the secondary school and principal Irene Chewchuk couldn’t be more honoured to be the host. “It’s fantastic for us – it’s a wonderful experience for our students. They’re studying immigration, emigration and the whole citizenship process,” she said. “And this is just a perfect application of a curriculum to real life that you could hope for.” The one hour ceremony took place in the school’s auditorium as soon-to-be Canadians, from 27 different countries, took their citizenship oath before a judge, and local politicians Ward 14 Councillor Gord Perks, MP Peggy Nash and MPP Cheri DiNovo.

New Canadian citizens are sworn in during a Citizenship Court held Friday at Parkdale Collegiate. Forty-four people from 27 different countries participated in the ceremony.

“We’re so proud that you’ve decided to join our family, our Canadian family,” DiNovo told the crowd. “Just know that you’ve walked into a family of love, a family of caring and we wouldn’t want to be related to anyone else. Congratulations.” At the end of the ceremony the Parkdale choir serenaded the newly minted Canadians and gave a performance of ‘Rather Be’ by Clean Bandit.

Hosting the ceremony in Parkdale was “absolutely fitting,” said Chewchuk adding not only is the school extremely diverse with about 55 different mother tongues spoken in the hallways by students, but also the area has been a microcosm of the world. “We have a very diverse population and we always have,” she said. Meeting focuses on impact of merger on students HILARY CATON hcaton@insidetoronto.com The option of potentially merging two Ossington Village Catholic elementary schools and its impact on students was front-of-mind at the third school accommodation review held at Senhor Santo Cristo Catholic School, one of the two schools in question. After discussing the option at length during the second meeting held last month, the working committee, consisting of teachers, parents and principals from both catholic schools – Senhor Santo Cristo and St. Luke Catholic School – decided to further explore the effects of amalgamation, particularly on students. “Once we were checking in with parents, the issue of transition was very important to them,” said Jim Saraco, the superintendent of area five within the Toronto Catholic District School Board (TCDSB). “So I wanted to make sure that they had an idea of what it would look like and how it would impact their kids.” Guest speaker and mental health leader for the TCDSB, Patricia

They’ll be fine, it’s two blocks away. Plus there’s a cushion because they’re not moving alone. The whole school is moving with them. – Pierre Aubry

Marra-Stapleton was on hand at the Tuesday night meeting to help paint a picture of those effects and what parents can do to help their child through this transition if the working committee recommends the option of consolidation. According to Marra-Stapleton, studies show the “impact can be quite detrimental” to the child, particularly if they are unprepared for the transition. “What we know from research and education and mental health is this: once our kids are adjusted they learn exponentially far better. And the Ministry of Education has latched on to this,” she said. “The mental well-being of the child is of the highest importance.” She added the Ministry of Education looks into three areas that help a child face a transition smoothly, including:

• school climate, or learning environment, which must be positive and make the child feel safe and welcomed; • family engagement regarding the transition process; • and fostering resilience, allowing the child to overcome any adversity with support and positivity. Saraco reiterated the committee has not yet made a decision between the three options on the table – a merger, the status quo of leaving both schools, or retro-fitting the existing buildings. The idea behind Tuesday’s meeting was not to push an amalgamation agenda, he said, but to provide more information about it. Some parents, however, thought amalgamation was receiving an inordinate amount of focus. “There are not enough recommendations being spoken about. From what I hear, a lot of these conversations are one-sided,” said Pierre Aubry, a father of two kids who attend St. Luke. “It just seems like they’re sort of pushing it in that direction.” Aubry told The Villager he believes the transition, should it happen, won’t be as impactful as the com-

mittee is making it seem. “They’ll be fine, it’s two blocks away,” he said. “Plus there’s a cushion because they’re not moving alone. The whole school is moving with them.” But what concerns him, and the other parents in attendance, is the potential for parents to pull their kids from the Catholic school board entirely, if there isn’t any additional programming being added to the consolidated school, thus not making the move academically beneficial. “There was no talk of incentives tonight,” said Aubry. “If you want to have the amalgamation work, you got to have some incentives or parents are just going to go here, there and everywhere. They won’t stay.” According to Saraco, the final decision won’t be made official for another two to three years and that the committee is taking into consideration all parental concerns and suggestions into the recommendations they put forward to the Catholic board.
