West Queen West choreographer’s dance piece showcases at festival Benjamin Landsberg will perform his piece One-to-One in the Princess Productions of dance: made in Canada HILARY CATON hcaton@insidetoronto.com

E

ver since West Queen West choreographer Benjamin Landsberg can remember, he’s been into dance thanks to American icon Madonna. “I was a huge Madonna fan from a young age and I thought it was so cool that people went up on stage and danced for a living,” Landsberg told The Villager. Landsberg said he always knew he wanted to be choreographer and has been one for the past 10 years. At 26 years old, the Queen Street West and Dovercourt Road resident has already worked with seven different dance companies including the Typecast Dance Company and inDance; he’s also danced in more than 10 different works created by other choreographers. In a week, Landsberg will be performing in the Princess Productions of dance: made in Canada, a four-day festival that

runs Aug. 13 to 16 at the Betty Oliphant Theatre. More than two dozen artists from across the country will participate in three different programs: The Main Stage, What You See Is What You Get (WYSIWYG) and Arts Encounters. His choreographed piece, One-to-One, will be performed by Landsberg and fellow dancer Natasha Poon Woo. It will appear in the WYSIWYG program, which is the show’s emerging artist showcase. The festival happens every two years and like most dance festivals, Landsberg had to submit an application, only this time it had to be two years in advance. “It’s (the show) evolved a lot since then. By the time they said, ‘OK, we want you in the festival,’ I was like ‘OK great, can I do this instead?’” Landsberg said. “My original idea I was sort of looking at issues of sexuality and the suppression of the feminine within both men and women. It wound up being a bit feminist,

Photo/courtesy

Benjamin Landsberg

but I was intrigued about the way we kind of put a little bit of shame on our feminine qualities, especially in the gay male community.” Landsberg said the performance has become more personal after an incident at

welcome to the

Halloween when he dressed in drag as R&B singer Beyonce. “Drag is something I wasn’t familiar with at all. But my reaction to it wasn’t what I thought at all. I was really excited and as the night went on and I went out in public, I started to get really selfconscious and scared,” Landsberg said. “At the same time there was this other side of me that was coming out involuntarily and it was someone I hadn’t really met before. It’s (the dance piece) tied into the idea of gender and the clash of opposing forces within somebody, but I became really interested in how the way that presentation brings something out of us... So my questions are what is this personality that comes out in us that doesn’t come out all the time and how does it come out?” Although the concept is narrowed down, Landsberg said he hasn’t started working on the 10-minute piece yet because he’s been performing in Hanover, Germany, for the past six months

with choreographer Felix Landerer in a production called Minataurus. He said he’s not worried; this type of time crunch is perfect for pushing the creative juices even if he is nervous about it. “Sometimes something interesting happens when you’re forced to work in a way that doesn’t always perfectly align with your comfort zone,” he said. “It’s the same with the 10-minute limit and having only two dancers. Sometimes these restrictions give your thinking a nice direction you wouldn’t think of taking otherwise.” Landsberg said 20 minutes is a good time frame. “It’s going to be quick. It’s nice to work in a different format,” Landsberg said. “It’s going to keep the piece very concise and I hope watchable and fast paced. I’m excited about it.”

Time for the Parapan Am Games to shine W

hile we’re still basking in the glow of the success of the recent Pan Am Games in Toronto, it’s important not to forget that an equally prestigious athletic event opens tomorrow. The Toronto 2015 Parapan Am Games run from Aug. 7 to 15, and residents can do their part to make these Games just as successful as the Pan Ams. The Parapans officially open Friday with ceremonies at York University’s CIBC Pan Am/Parapan Am Athletics Stadium starting at 5:45 p.m. The Parapan Am Games in Toronto will feature more than 1,600 athletes from 28 countries competing in 15 sports. As was the case with the Pan Am Games, competition will take place at a our view number of Toronto venues. There’s track and field at York Celebrate University, swimming, sitting and wheelchair tennis our athletes volleyball at the University of Toronto Aug. 7 to 15 Scarborough, and wheelchair basketball at the Mattamy Centre downtown. There’s archery at Varsity Stadium, and the cycling road races at Ontario Place. Markham, Mississauga, Milton and Whitby are also hosting events for those hoping to catch Parapan action beyond Toronto’s borders. As always, these Games serve as a qualifier for the Paralympics. That’s especially important for a number of top Canadian athletes and teams including the men’s wheelchair basketball team. Our men’s teams are three-time gold medal winners at the Paralympics (including gold at the London 2012 Games) and they are looking to continue their golden ways come the Rio 2016 Paralympics. Their first step on that road comes at the Toronto Parapan Am Games. The Canadian women’s wheelchair basketball team also has an impressive resume, having won Paralympic gold medals in 1992, 1996 and 2000. The excitement for the Parapan Am Games begins this week with the arrival of the torch relay, which will be in Toronto today with stops at Corus Quay, Inukshuk Park, Queens Quay and Yonge Street, and David Pecaut Square for a community celebration at 12:30 p.m. that will feature a guest appearance by Rick Hansen. Tomorrow, the torch relay visits Variety Village in Scarborough, Queen’s Park, and the Native Canadian Centre of Toronto on Spadina Road in advance of the opening ceremonies.

Straight talk about the dog days of summer

M

y message box got a serious workout over the long weekend. It was standing and screaming room only in there. Everybody was whining up a storm. But it wasn’t about the hot weather. It was about the phrase du jour referring to it. Q. Jamie, I always hate the beginning of August. The only expression we ever hear is the ‘dog days of summer’. We’re bombarded with it. The dog days of summer, the dog days of summer, the dog days of summer. Enough already. This has been going on for donkey’s years. No other creatures get even a mention until they’re over. It makes me angry as a bear, I tell ya. When are we finally going to get equal time in the summer for the rest of the animal kingdom? – Gord the Gorilla A. In the next few minutes, Gordo. I don’t

jamie wayne guest column want to let the cat out of the bag, but a little bird told me that by the end of the column all will be forgotten and you’ll be happy as a clam. Q. Do you really mean it, Jamie? I’ve had ants in my pants over this since I was knee-high to a grasshopper. – Karina the Kangaroo A. Cross my heart. This comes straight from the horse’s mouth. Q. Wait a minute. I thought you just got through saying it was a bird that gave you the news. This all sounds rather fishy if you ask me. – Arnold the Armadillo A. Don’t get your feathers in a bunch. The horse called first. The bird tweeted right after. OK? Q. Jamie, do you mind if I talk turkey for a second?

– Penelope the Peacock A. Would you be a lamb and try back around Thanksgiving? I promised to resolve this dog days of summer controversy before the end of the column. If I don’t do it, I have a hunch I’ll be hearing about it until the cows come home. Q. You’ll be hearing about it long after they arrive, too. No other animals can get on the map this time of year. It’s the nature of the beast, I’m afraid. Don’t you think it’s time to accept that you’re barking up the wrong tree? – Zoe the Zebra. A. On the contrary, I was about to pull a rabbit out of a hat here. Anything is possible. All you have to do is believe. Q. Yeah and pigs might fly, too. Sorry, but I’m with Zoe on this. – Wally the Walrus A. Boo hoo. I’m crying crocodile tears. I hate to break it to the two of you,

but it’s all just water off this duck’s back. I guarantee you’ll both be eating crow. But it’s not up to me. I’ll leave the deciding vote to the final questioner of the day. Q. I believe. I believe. I believe. Now, with that out of the way, let’s get to the most important part of this discussion. After I’m done eating, any chance of going back for seconds? As far as I’m concerned one can never get enough crow and you can see by my attached selfie that I’m a growing boy. – Harvey the Hippopotamus A. That I can, and thanks for tipping the scales in my favour. But as for the extra helping? Well, I wouldn’t count my chickens before they hatch if I were you. Participants ‘yarn bomb’ the neighbourhood HILARY CATON hcaton@insidetoronto.com If you’ve walked by the Parkdale Activity-Recreation Centre (PARC) on Queen Street West lately, you might have noticed a rather interesting bike – one completely covered in yarn. This latest yarn bombing, a form of street art that involves the act of covering everyday objects in a community with yarn as opposed to paint or chalk, was done by the men and women of the PARC dropin knitting group. “I’m so excited about it,” said Tara Kerr, the facilitator of the knitting program. “It’s a lot of fun and it’s for people of different skill levels.” This isn’t the first time Kerr and her group of yarn bombers have chosen to decorate Parkdale. She said about two years ago they decorated some trees with flowers and sweaters in a parkette at Dufferin and Queen streets. They had been invited by the Parkdale Business Improvement Area (BIA) to make the area more festive for a spring festival. They also did a yarn bombing for the Lab Cab Festival last year on a

chain link fence at Close Avenue and Queen Street West. Kerr said everything on the bike was knitted by participants of the drop-in program. It has an ocean theme complete with fish, seaweed, shells and jellyfish – all made of yarn. “It’s just fun and it’s an expression of art so we can make our community more interesting and decorative and beautify the community,” Kerr said. “It’s also a way for us to get out in the community as well, as opposed to just sitting inside and knitting things for ourselves.” The knitting program is one of several drop-in programs available through PARC, a social services organization that works with its members on individual issues of poverty, mental health, addictions, homelessness and food security. Members have access to services through four core areas of operation: a peer-support program, an outreach program, supportive housing and a drop-in centre that has a variety of programs including art, writing and knitting. Kerr said the program has about 10 people that come in every Saturday from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m.

Above, a yarn bombing bike at 1499 Queen St. W. Right, yarn bombing minions at Queen Street West and Wilson Park Road.

“Everybody got to participate based on their level of experience and interest,” Kerr said. Parkdale has been yarn bombed a few times in the past few months, including a tribute to the minions from the Despicable Me movie that can be found at Queen Street and Wilson Park Road. The artist responsible is still unknown.

Kerr said the group is by no means “guerrilla yarn bombers” and often put up the pieces in broad daylight. She said she would like to do more of it, but just doesn’t have the time. “I’ve seen ideas online. And as I sit outside my apartment I see things I’d like to yarn bomb like a park bench or mailbox; I just don’t

have enough time,” she said. “But there will be more, you just have to keep an eye out for it. This is only our first attempt at an object. There could be others.”

Downtown Toronto native leading the Rush into ultimate disc final four Norm Nelson nnelson@insidetoronto.com When Isaiah Masek-Kelly runs onto the field with his Toronto Rush professional ultimate disc team Saturday, at the new 18,000-seat Avaya Stadium in San Jose, he can thank the 40 hours of community service he carried out while attending Harbord Collegiate in downtown Toronto. The star player for the Toronto Rush, who grew up in the Dovercourt Road and Bloor Street area, recalled doing his volunteer work at Palmerston Avenue Junior Public School, which his sister was attending at the time. “They had an elementary team, and I had never played before. And so I would learn the game there while coaching them,” he said. He liked it so much he then helped to create the ultimate disc team at Harbord Collegiate. He then pursued the sport at the club and

national levels and finally went on to the ultimate level – starring with the Toronto Rush in the American Ultimate Disc League (AUDL). He is the team leader in goals, assists and blocks and is also one of only three players in AUDL history to record more than 50 goals and 50

assists. The team splits its games between Lamport Stadium and Varsity Centre which, he pointed out, “is right in my neighbourhood – a 10-minute bike ride.”

Police hope witnesses come forward from deadly nightclub shooting ANDREW PALAMARCHUK apalamarchuk@insidetoronto.com Police are appealing for photos and videos related to a shooting on Tuesday morning in and around the Muzik nightclub that took two young lives and injured three others. The club, at 15 Saskatchewan Rd. in the CNE grounds, was hosting a party following the OVO Fest concert at nearby Molson Amphitheatre as part of the Caribbean Carnival long weekend festivities. Police said there were thousands of people around when multiple shots were fired both inside and outside the club as it was shutting down at about 3:20 a.m. “We’ve interviewed some people. This is an extremely small percentage of the people that we know were at the Muzik nightclub that night,” said Insp. Peter Morreira of the homicide squad. “We are appealing to anyone who took any videos or photos...at the nightclub at any point during

Go back to the drawing board on rail crossing, say residents >>>from page 1 rail crossing and proposes building an estimated 8.5 metre high bridge over it, so that CP freight trains won’t interfere with GO trains on the Barrie corridor. The bridge would be built from Bloor Street West in the south to just north of Davenport Road. “Why Metrolinx wants to build a one-and-a-half kilometre bridge that’s three storeys high through a residential neighbourhood – it doesn’t make sense,” said Sam Barbieri, a member of the group Options For Davenport. He was one of a long line of people who stood waiting at the microphones to ask questions of the minister. “We have no idea what this monstrosity will look like. Why is this project being rammed down our throats? The community deserves respect. We don’t want lip

service,” Barbieri said to thunderous applause. “I don’t want to look at this bridge for another 30 to 40 years. I think you should go back to the drawing board.” Barbieri suggested the “super bridge” be put on hold for 10 years so it could be built properly and electrified. A decade is the time frame in which the minister said his government has committed to electrifying the UnionPearson Express (UPX). Initially, however, the UPX was supposed to go electric by 2017. That’s what was announced while the express rail to the airport was under construction. Why then, has that time line changed? Parkdale-High Park MP Peggy Nash, who attended the meeting with colleague MPP for Parkdale-High Park Cheri DiNovo, wanted to know. “People are concerned about the health impact,” she told the minister.

Del Duca reiterated his government’s 10-year plan, adding that existing locomotives are Tier 4 and emit 80 to 90 per cent less toxins. Nash also inquired about the low ridership numbers on the UPX and its high fares. “I read all the social media. I am aware of what people are feeling,” Del Duca said. “We launched the Union Pearson Express June 6. We’ll continue to monitor the ridership,” he said, adding seven weeks was not enough time to make any drastic decisions. Davenport has been loyal to the Liberals for more than 30 years, pointed out local resident Donna Cowan. “What has that loyalty got us? The UPX – with no benefit to our neighbourhood. The GO Barrie line is no benefit to our community. It does not service us at all,” she said.
