These aren’t your average running clubs. For one, these runners call themselves a crew. They aren’t restricted to main roads and often go through trails and alleys. Some of them are even training for ultra marathons (100 kilometres or more). And some are even trekking through the dark, as late as 11 p.m. William Chaupiz, captain of the Night Terrors, now leads 20 west-end runners. They meet every Monday and Thursday night for what he describes as an “urban explore” run. “We run to have fun. We

start together and we finish together,” Chaupiz said of the tight-knit group. They run year round. They run through torrential rain. Wintertime snowstorms? They’re still in. Chaupiz said the group was founded in 2013 partly as a response to the lack of running clubs that fit their busy schedules. “We wanted to be able to come home, eat, be with family, but still go out for a healthy exercise,” he said. For councillor Gord Perks, the proposal of a practice facility for the Toronto Raptors on the grounds of Exhibition Place is a nice idea, but if it impedes on existing green space he’s not in agreement. “I think that we already have too much parking and hard surface there and I’ve communicated with city staff and Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment (informally) that I want to see a proposal that doesn’t consume
any more open green space,” Perks told The Villager. “There’s a baseball diamond that could turn into a parking lot to make up for the loss in parking that would happen to construct the facility.” Perks added he has not seen a proposal from MLSE about the possible practice facility that could be built on a parking lot on the north side of Medieval Times, but would like to see one that incorporates parking into the structure or doesn’t get rid of existing green >>>COMMUNITY, page 5
