Running clubs go the distance - in the dark NATALIE CHU nchu@insidetoronto.com
Enjoy a nature walk and much more in our Community Calendar / 6
These aren’t your average running clubs. For one, these runners call themselves a crew. They aren’t restricted to main roads and often go through trails and alleys. Some of them are even training for ultra marathons (100 kilometres or more). And some are even trekking through the dark, as late as 11 p.m. William Chaupiz, captain of the Night Terrors, now leads 20 west-end runners. They meet every Monday and Thursday night for what he describes as an “urban explore” run. “We run to have fun. We

start together and we finish together,” Chaupiz said of the tight-knit group. They run year round. They run through torrential rain. Wintertime snowstorms? They’re still in. Chaupiz said the group was founded in 2013 partly as a response to the lack of running clubs that fit their busy schedules. “We wanted to be able to come home, eat, be with family, but still go out for a healthy exercise,” he said. Choosing to go out later not only made sense in terms of timing, but the Night Terrors also found it made the experi>>>NIGHT, page 11

For councillor Gord Perks, the proposal of a practice facility for the Toronto Raptors on the grounds of Exhibition Place is a nice idea, but if it impedes on existing green space he’s not in agreement. “I think that we already have too much parking and hard surface there and I’ve communicated with city staff and Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment (informally) that I want to see a proposal that doesn’t consume
any more open green space,” Perks told The Villager. “There’s a baseball diamond that could turn into a parking lot to make up for the loss in parking that would happen to construct the facility.” Perks added he has not seen a proposal from MLSE about the possible practice facility that could be built on a parking lot on the north side of Medieval Times, but would like to see one that incorporates parking into the structure or doesn’t get rid of existing green >>>COMMUNITY, page 5

The simple way to shop for insurance.
Inspired by the immense amount of work officers and various organizations are doing throughout Toronto Police Services’ 11 Division to reduce crime, poverty and substance abuse, new Supt. Heinz Kuck says he wanted to do his part. “There’s such an array of characters doing amazing work. I wanted to throw myself into the equation,” Kuck told The Villager. No stranger to endeavors in the name of a cause – Kuck completed a 120-kilometre four-day, threenight dogsled excursion this winter raising more than $7,000 for Victim Services. Now the veteran police officer is set to embark on a solo canoe half-marathon on Lake Ontario next month. He’ll kick off the 21-kilometre paddle he’s coined “Paddling for Provisions” at the Humber River, loop Toronto Island and return to shore. Spurred on by the physical aspect of the challenge, his goal is to raise awareness of those in need while encouraging donations of nonperishable food items, which will be distributed to several community support organizations within 11 Division. Kuck’s target is to collect as much as 1,100 pounds of food – that’s 50 pounds per kilometre he paddles. He is asking for such items as baby food and formula, canned fish and meat, peanut butter, canned fruits

Eleven Division officers will distribute the food to St. Francis Table, New Born Church of God Inc. and the Breakaway Relief Foundation. Already a physically active person, Kuck said he’s training out on the water as much as he can in his canoe or stand-up paddle board. His objective is to complete the 21-kilometre distance in three hours. Keeping active “Once I joined the police service, I realized how important being physically fit is,” said Kuck, who makes sure to do something active every day in addition to his healthy eating regime. His half-marathon is scheduled for the week of Aug. 11. His hope is that he’ll be able to complete it Monday, Aug. 11, but he is at the mercy of the weather. He’d like to get an 8 a.m. start. Anyone is welcome to see him off at Sunnyside Beach. To follow Kuck’s canoe adventure and to find out exactly when he’ll

Keeping an eye on your neighbourhood
W
e’d like to hear about the best practices of your local Neighbourhood Watch. It’s because we think the best ideas are often old ones, and where the safety of a community is concerned, neighbours watching out for each other is about as effective as you can get. An organized, sustained program like Neighbourhood Watch takes it a step further, and is a program that should be maximized on our streets and across the city. Residents almost always support one another in time of crisis, or in the face of tragedy. We’ve seen that locally many times – just last week in Leslieville, after the two-alarm fire on Minto Street that had residents checking in on one another and offering assistance to police. In south Etobicoke, the rash of summer break-ins and assaults have people up in arms – watching out over each other’s houses and noting any suspicious activity to our view police. That collaboration is inspiring to see, but it’s almost too bad it Keep an eye happens only after a crime or on neighbours tragedy has already taken place. We need to be proactive if we always want to have any lasting effect on the safety of our communities. Neighbourhood Watch can help us do that. Created in the 1980s by the Crime Prevention Association of Toronto (CPAT), it empowers neighbourhoods, businesses, and individuals to take action to reduce crime. Though the familiar signs are up all over the city, indicating the existence of a Neighbourhood Watch Group, we’re curious to know how many are actually still active? We’re willing to bet far less than the number of signs still up. The success of the program is entirely dependent on the people of the neighbourhood. Even CPAT acknowledges on its website that programs go dormant when people move or they feel the reason for starting one has been solved, or the community once again feels safe. We shouldn’t take that sense of security for granted. We’d like to find out how many Neighbourhood Watch Programs are active in Toronto. What’s the experience been, for those involved? Do groups share information, advice – or do they even know other groups exist? We’d like to investigate the possibility for growth and collaboration on a broader scale. The potential to deter crime is in our hands, but it’s only effective when residents work together towards that goal. If you belong to a Neighbourhood Watch Group, contact us at press@insidetoronto. com to let us know.

Running without the advantage of name recognition Mayoralty candidates – at least some of them – get a lot of attention in Toronto municipal elections, and rightly so: the choice Torontonians make for mayor sets the future direction of the city more than any single vote. But there are 44 other elections taking place – and some of those elections are more important than others. In 2010, the Ford administration wouldn’t be what it became if Doug Ford hadn’t stepped in to hold onto the Ward 2 Etobicoke North seat after Rob Ford left it, to take the mayoralty. Like too many other wards with well-known incumbents, Ward 2 has become a stronghold... not for an individual – but a family, the Ford family which has held it for 14 years. And Doug is so confident in its strength that he’s suggested his young nephew and intended successor Michael Ford need not even
david nickle the city do interviews to take on the job. The brand in Rexdale is that strong. Actually, it may not be that strong. Dismantle brand The Ford brothers have done much to dismantle their city-wide brand, and more to the point – motivate some fairly sophisticated opposition both city wide and more importantly in the ward. That is where Andray Domise comes into the picture. A financial advisor and writer who spent his childhood in Rexdale and lives in Etobicoke now, the 33-yearold African-Canadian has been offering up a pointed critique of the Ford brand in terms of its bedrock support in north Etobicoke and among African-Canadian young people.
“
And Doug (Ford) is so confident in its strength he’s suggested his young nephew and intended successor Michael Ford need not even do interviews to take on the job.
He took on the idea of a Ford stronghold directly in a conversation that took place just prior to Michael Ford registering. “The whole thing has to do with anger and resentment,” he said. “A lot of support comes from people who feel disconnected and cut off from Toronto’s political establishment. You can see, looking around Etobicoke neighbourhoods, why people get the impression that nobody cares – all they have is half-finished projects and empty promises. “If you can’t rely on people who represent you
to get the job done, you’re going to end up rallying around somebody who is going to capture all that anger and resentment and passion.” Domise doesn’t hide his own anger, but he is betting that the residents of Ward 2 will eventually let go of that anger and resentment after being allowed to be more directly involved in deciding the shape of their community. Domise is also, of course, just a candidate right now – one of 13 running in Ward 2, and one of 12 without the advantage of name recognition, and by no means established to be the best choice among them. So his plans to turn Ward 2 from stronghold to freehold might be premature. But he is running a campaign that at least indicates a sense of the stakes on Oct. 27, both for city and for community.

Community gets chance to see plan at consultation meeting set for Aug. 11 >>>from page 1 space for a parking lot. According to the director of media relations for the Toronto Raptors, Jim LaBumbard, the proposal for that space is still in the design phase and nothing is concrete as of yet. The Toronto Raptors current practice facility is at the Air Canada Centre. According to LaBumbard he’s aware there are rumours within the media that the team’s current practice space could be turned into a nightclub, but says he has not had confirmation if that’s true or not. Perks first heard about the idea recently. But talks about a practice facility popping at Exhibition Place began this past winter when discussions of the expansion of BMO Field were in the works. “At that time they mentioned that they were looking at this idea of a practice facility. But the idea was so undeveloped that we (city
council) said to them, ‘give us something real and we can talk’,” said Perks. A community consultation is scheduled for Aug. 11, which invites residents from both wards 14 and 19 to hear more about the proposal. Whether or not a vision for the practice facility will be shown at that time is still unknown to Perks, who is still working with MLSE to get a detailed proposal in front of him. “(These plans) They’re very fresh.... I’ll be frank, there’s a possibility that meeting could get cancelled because the whole deal could fall apart before then, the situation is that fragile,” he said. “MLSE seems to be in a rush to get something through. I haven’t gotten anything in front of me to look at and the community hasn’t gotten anything to look at and if they want us to buy into something that sacrifices green space based
on one evening meeting, I’m not for it.” Perks said he, along with Ward 19 Trinity-Spadina councillor Mike Layton, agree that more consultation with the community needs to take place. He admits neither of them is happy with the idea that, if accepted, this practice facility could eliminate green space for the community. He also insists a proposal be drafted that could better suit the goals the community has for the land at Exhibition Place. He adds he’s prepared to have a conversation with MLSE about the green space and the community use aspects of the facility. “Whatever facility they do build because they’re building it on public land, I am also very keen that there be a very solid community-use agreement,” said Perks.

It’s just different,” Chaupiz said. “Plus, for photos they’re just better at night.” But the members of the Night Terrors aren’t the only ones in Parkdale who have inspired a running movement. Steven Artemiw co-founded the Parkdale Roadrunners in 2010 partly as a joke. This crew, which now has a pool of more than 300 runners, was initially named the Mascot Running Club. “We had shirts that said Mascot Running Club before there was a group. For Artemiw, running culture is alive and well in Parkdale, especially among the “creative types”. “Superficially speaking, we have sort of a younger, hipper, edge to us. People don’t usually see that in running groups,” he said. Most of the runners are from the west end, but anyone is welcome. Artemiw even housed a couple from France
who joined one of the runs during a visit to the city. “The social running movement is happening everywhere. We interact with people from all over the world,” Artemiw said. That camaraderie is something both groups say sets their crew apart. “The fact that I can call someone and say ‘let’s run’ and they’re just ready to go, is the best part,” Chaupiz said.
