Toronto Police Services Chief Mark Saunders is appealing to those who attended the OVO Fest after party at Muzik nightclub to come forward with any information to help officers in the ongoing investigation. “When people don’t assist (the police) it helps those carrying firearms,” Saunders said at the conference held Tuesday at police headquarters. “We’re appealing to them to come forward.” The two people who were shot and killed around 3 a.m. Aug. 4 at Muzik at Exhibition Place following an OVO Fest after party were identified last week as 23-year-old Duvel Hibbert of Brampton and 26-year-old Toronto resident Ariela Navarro-Fenoy. Hibbert was found dead on the club’s patio and NavarroFenoy was found a short distance away at the Dufferin Gates. Three other people were injured; two males are still in hospital with serious injuries, Saunders said. He had no new developments to share with the >>>ONE, page 6

Artist John Little’s abstract work at Gallery 1313
“
HILARY CATON hcaton@insidetoronto.com The latest group exhibit to take over Parkdale’s Gallery 1313 is giving artists the chance to stray from their everyday art work routine and showcase the work they are truly passionate about in Not My 9 to 5. “It’s a great opportunity for artists who have great jobs to show what they can do. A lot of these artists bring a lot of abstraction in to their work that you normally wouldn’t see or they normally couldn’t do in their 9 to 5 job,” said Roncesvalles resident John Little, one of the artists participating in the exhibit. “They’re showing a different side of their personality; a more rougher or exuberant side. I’m honoured to be a part of it.” The group exhibit is hosted by professionals from a broad spectrum of creative industries, some of which include an app designer, 3D animator for Nickelodeon and graphic artist. Little, a Queen Street West and Roncesvalles Avenue resident, is a technical artist and

designer for Time Play, the pre-show app for Cineplex Odeon Corporations. He will have three art pieces in the show along with the 22 other Toronto artists. “My art is very figurative. It’s representational and fantastical at the same time,” Little said. “I do a lot of pictures that have inspired fantasy elements, along with portraits
of people’s pets.” Two pieces that he calls “high fantasy images” are somewhat inspired by the popular Magic the Gathering card game and one is a pet portrait of two cats and a dog dressed up in period piece clothing. “Mostly I really wanted to show off the fantasy work and that’s what it was just going to be originally. But people
respond so highly to the pet portraits that it’s kind of hard not to (include it),” he said. “They’re pretty silly. There’s nothing better than a pet portrait. I’m really comfortable with images that are silly.” Little uses the “classic stuff,” oil paint and canvas, to create his art, but said he enjoys painting digitally now along with creating 3D art and computer graphics.

He’s always been into art, he said, adding it was one of the few subjects in school he enjoyed. “I didn’t have any other great skills I suppose. When I was kid it was the only thing I was really amazing at and I just kept doing it non-stop,” he told the Villager. He followed his passion and graduated from OCAD University’s drawing and painting program in 2003 and later graduated from Sheridan College in 2010 for computer animation. “I enjoy it. It’s really awesome when you wow yourself; when you see something come to life, I’m still surprised by it. So it’s still fun for me,” he said. He describes his artwork in two words: dark and classy. He’s inspired by works that
have a high fidelity to realism, he said. He also describes the kind of art he likes to create as super absurdist, and creates works that “relate to emotions people have, either sexual or destructive,” adding those subjects are more interesting to explore through art. “As an image maker, I am really drawn to the techniques of surrealism because you’re able to express hidden dimensions of a character you normally wouldn’t get from a realist picture,” Little said. “I can be more communicative and more of a storyteller this way.” This will be the first time Little has shown his work in a gallery since 2006, but he said he isn’t nervous at all about it. “It’s going to be a good time. It’ll be a chance to meet a lot of cool artists and new people,” he said. “It’s going to be great.” Not My 9 to 5 group exhibit runs until Saturday at Gallery 1313, 1313 Queen St. W.

Pay attention to federal campaign
Write us
A
federal election. Oh yes, almost forgot, didn’t you? It was an unusual (some would say cynical) move by Prime Minister Stephen Harper to drop the writ in the middle of the August long weekend – effectively extending the official campaign up to the Oct. 19 voting day by another few weeks. It’s understandably challenging, with weeks left in summer, for voters to begin pondering their choices. Moreso, even with a number of candidates already declared, the official cut-off date for nominations doesn’t arrive until late September. But here we are. For better or worse, the campaign is on. And for Toronto, in the midst of the typical rhetoric, mud-slinging and sloganeering that comes with any election campaign, residents must take a hard look at what the candidates and their parties vow to do for this city. Twenty-five of the our view 338 members of Parliament will be coming from Toronto. That’s a percentage – regardSpeak loudly significant less of party affiliation of its memon Toronto’s bers, Toronto’s representatives need to be vocal about the city’s priorities needs. So for residents, it’s worth paying attention to the campaign. For candidates, it’s worth crafting thoughtful, evidence-based platforms to address ongoing challenges the city faces. Hint: Transit comes to mind. This election will see a number of changes. Particularly downtown and in the north and eastern parts of the city, there are a number of boundary changes. This is brought about in part by the creation of new ridings including Don Valley North in North York, and Scarborough-Rouge Park and Scarborough North in Scarborough; Trinity-Spadina, downtown, has been replaced with University-Rosedale and Spadina-Fort York. Once a Liberal bastion federally, the city in 2011 saw a healthy mix of Liberal, NDP and Conservative candidates elected. It will be interesting to see if that trend continues. According to statistics from Elections Canada, the voter turnout in 2011 was 61.1 per cent, up from the historic low of 58.8 per cent in 2008, but still one of the lower voter turnouts in Canadian federal election history. That number needs to be higher. It may be the dog days of summer. There may be other things on your mind. Just remember that this is already ongoing.

column
OK...Blue Jays...let’s – talk – noise! When long-time Blue Jays radio announcer Jerry Howarth is calling a game, the moment the Jays start putting runs up on the board he gleefully exudes: “The Blue Jays are in flight.” Well, if he were commenting on the reaction of Jays fans to seeing the explosive firepower of the American League’s highest scoring team, “in flight” doesn’t go far enough. “In orbit” is more like it. And it’s not just runs that are igniting fan response lift off. Great plays in the field do it, too. So do stolen bases, strikeouts of an opposing batter, bullpen saves, walks, balks, you name it. Heck, fans are even going gaga over simple player introductions. Take the ones for fivetime all-stars, shortstop Troy Tulowitzki and pitching ace David Price, who were recently acquired within 48 hours of each other just prior to the trade deadline. When they simply made their first appearance at the
jamie wayne guest column plate and on the mound respectively, the Rogers Centre crowd erupted. My how times have changed, eh? Back in August 1992, prior to the Jays’ first World Series title, Dave Winfield made an impassioned plea to the oftdescribed reserved – as in audibly restrained – fan base to make noise. The 2015 version now screams at the drop of a hat. Or bat. Likely a rosin bag, too, the way things are going. The players are impressed and humbly appreciative. Price said it’s the best crowd he’s ever experienced. Reliever Mark Lowe, who just came over from the Seattle Mariners, knows first-hand that when the Jays play in Seattle, Jays fans out-scream the locals. While the decibel level around here has been
higher since the trade deadline acquisitions that also included left-fielder Ben Revere and reliever LaTroy Hawkins, the crowd has been rocking since the preseason began. Off-season pickup catcher Russell Martin was the recipient of several standing ovations in Montreal during a two-game exhibition series with the Cincinnati Reds. The other big name off-season addition, third baseman Josh Donaldson, for whom the crowd now chants “M-V-P”, has repeatedly brought the audience to its feet since opening day. The dazzling highlightreel catches by centre fielder Kevin Pillar have inspired the same mania, as have the slick defensive gems by second baseman Ryan Goins. The timely slugging of Chris Colabello and Justin Smoak has also not gone unnoticed. Nor has the inning-eating dependability of hurlers Mark Buehrle, R.A. Dickey and Marco Estrada.
The youthful relieving tandem of 23-year-old set-up man Aaron Sanchez and 20-year-old closer Roberto Osuna are also making hearts and vocal chords go pit-a-pat. When you add stalwarts Jose Bautista and Edwin Encarnacion into the mix, it’s apparent there is something special going on. And this fandemonium is all just for the regular season. Imagine what the joint will sound like if they make it to the World Series. So, Dave Winfield, if you’re reading this and you’re coming to the Rogers Centre for the sold-out series with the Yankees this weekend, a word of warning. I wouldn’t bring my noise meter along, unless you’ve got a really good device insurance plan.

Why choose a Realtor? A Realtor can help make buying a home easy
Buying a house on your own sounds like a great idea until you realize all of the work that goes into your biggest purchase. Have you calculated your budget, including all of the taxes and fees associated? Want to wade through all the postings? Do you understand all of the terms in real estate listings and paperwork? Buying a home isn’t so easy after all. This is where a Realtor comes in. They are trained to find the perfect house and make the process easier for you. To start, your Realtor will need to know your budget. He or she will explain the costs associated with buying a house. A listing price may look appealing, but you can’t forget fees like the land transfer tax, insurance, or legal costs. Also, you can’t assume your pre-approved mortgage is right for your finances and desired lifestyle. Next, your Realtor needs to know your musthaves and dreams. Instead of taking weeks or months searching through listings that don’t seem right for you, your Realtor has the resources and know-how to find a handful of perfect places for you to view. After that, sit back as your Realtor arranges house viewings. He or she will be worrying about playing telephone tag and setting up appoint-
ments while you continue on with daily life. Made your decision? Your Realtor can negotiate the selling price for you. No one likes paying more than necessary. Buying a home is far from easy and selling can be just as difficult. First, you have to calculate the proper listing price. Take into consideration the neighbourhood, upgrades to your home and the distance to shops and schools. A Realtor can save you the time and research. They know what price will get buyers interested and still make you happy. Realtors also know how to market your listing to the right buyers. This saves you the time and effort of writing an advertisement to post in newspapers, online and on real estate websites. And when buyers show interest, your Realtor can deal with the back-and-forth while you focus on other things. Open houses are a drag to organize. Realtors make it easy! Go out for dinner or shop while your Realtor answers all the questions and keeps an eye on the place for you. Maybe you’ll come home to an offer or two. You’re a busy person who doesn’t have the extra time to devote to searching for a home or finding the right buyer. A Realtor can help you make the best decision without the extra hassle.

Garden grows hope along with food for CAMH clients >>>from page 1 campus. “We’re growing hope along with food, is how I would put it because we’re fostering new transferable skills, such as leadership,” said Liz Kirk, the senior program coordinator facilitated through FoodShare. “A lot of clients may have been out of the workforce for some time because of their illness and this is an opportunity for them to volunteer and become part of a team where each member is unique and contributes their own skills.” The garden also provides therapeutic benefits, Kirk said. “Just being in the garden is very peaceful and tranquil and is a wonderful stress reliever for clients and it enables them to make a positive contribution and put their worries aside as they really focus on gardening and growing their own food. It’s physically, mentally and emotionally rewarding,”
Kirk said. “I think being a part of something that’s productive and beautiful helps people to focus on their recovery and resilience; it’s something positive in their lives.” T h e p ro g ra m , w h i c h started in 2002, also has a mentorship portion that pairs up experienced gardeners with newbie green thumbs. It also extends beyond the garden to the kitchen to learn about canning and how to make salsa and vinegars. All the fruits and veggies harvested, which include beets, hot and sweet peppers, heirloom tomatoes, spinach and raspberries to name a few, are sold at the Sunshine Garden Market Mondays and Wednesdays. All funds raised from sales go toward helping support the program and patients also get to take some home. “We’re empowering people to learn how to grow their own food and many are on limited incomes. So the opportunity to grow your own organic

The Sunshine Garden Market, at the south end of the Centre of Addiction and Mental Health Queen Street Campus, is run by FoodShare and helps patients on their road to recovery with horticultural therapy.
food is terribly important,” Kirk told The Villager. Working in the garden has helped many patients on their road to recovery. One of them is 53-year-old Jamie Games, who battled from alcohol and cocaine addictions. He’s been a part of the gardening program for the past four years and is 51 months
sober. “June 13, 2011 is when I had my last drink. It was 6:30 at night. I remember that day. I’ve been sober ever since and the garden has a lot to do with it,” Games said. “Obviously you have to want to stop or it doesn’t matter. But through CAMH
and the garden, it’s been my saviour through everything. I do gardening at home now, too. I love it. It’s one of the most beautiful feelings in the world, watching something grow.” Games, who used to manage two restaurants in Toronto told The Villager participating in the garden in any capacity gave him a sense of being and the fact that it’s on the CAMH Campus is another push toward recovery. “It kept me real seeing other people with addiction problems and mental problems. It keeps you focused and aware that you, too, have a problem,” he said. It also kept his mind off wanting to down a 40-ounce bottle of rum or five to six bottles of wine, which was the norm for him. “Whether you’re battling an alcohol or a drug addiction, you need to fill your time because if you’re not you’re just thinking about when your next drink is or when
your next drug is. You have to keep busy,” Games said. Games is only one of many success stories that have come out of the Sunshine Garden, said Kirk, who added she’s had patients go on to own their own landscape business, attend university to study landscape architecture, as well as become an employee for a landscape architecture business. Games said he’ll continue to garden at home and at CAMH and would recommend it to anyone battling an addiction. “It will give you an outlet that you wouldn’t get to experience otherwise,” he said. “It’s a feeling of freedom.” The market operates Mondays and Wednesdays from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. throughout the summer at southwest corner of Queen Street West and Gordon Bell Street.

Canada Revenue fraud scam targeting single female seniors TAMARA SHEPHARD tshephard@insidetoronto.com
Buy and sell in your neighbourhood.
Revenue Agency money for unpaid taxes. They’ll threaten to send a car over to arrest you. They tell you your credit history will be destroyed.” A big tip off – perpetrators will demand victims electronically transfer the funds or pay in prepaid credit cards – something Canada Revenue Agency would never do, Gutter said. “Canada Revenue Agency would never request your personal information over the phone,” the veteran officer said. “They would never ask you to get prepaid credit cards to pay overdue taxes. They would never leave you voicemail messages with your personal information on it.” Gutter urged anyone who receives the calls to ask the caller his or her name, office phone number and email address.
Toronto police are warning residents, particularly single female seniors, of a scam where perpetrators posing as Canada Revenue Agency officials call and threaten jail time unless erroneous back taxes are paid – immediately. Toronto police fraud Const. Cornelus Gutter said the fraudsters share personal information about their targeted victims in an attempt to appear legitimate. But that information is easily gained from victims’ social media accounts, such as LinkedIn, facebook or Instagram, he said. “They like to focus on elderly females,” Gutter said. “They become quite aggressive trying to back you into forwarding them money. They’ll say you owe Canada

“Then say, ‘I’m going to call you back. First, I want to talk to the police or talk to my lawyer,’” he advised. “Watch their reaction. They’ll get very angry or they’ll just hang up.” Most importantly, slow down on the phone and don’t commit to anything, Gutter advised. “They’re relying on you acting in haste,” he said. “Call somebody. Call the police. Go to the front desk of any police station. Call your family lawyer. If you don’t want to call police or your lawyer, call a neighbour, a pastor, a friend, your son or daughter. Ask, ‘does this sound right?’ “If something seems out of place, there is a good chance, it is.”

PARC finds homes for seven tenants of the Queen’s Hotel Tenants had a week’s notice to find a new home after BSAR Development Group asks them to vacate HILARY CATON hcaton@insidetoronto.com A handful of the 27 tenants who were forced out of the Queen’s Hotel at 1521 Queen St. W. Friday, Aug. 7 have found temporary housing. The tenants, many of whom are on disability pensions, were given a week’s notice to vacate the premises because extensive renovations to the building, which has, for many years, been used as a rooming house. The tenants were relocated through Parkdale Activity Recreation Centre’s (PARC) critical incident protocol service, which is a partnership between the City of Toronto, The Canadian Red Cross and WoodGreen Community Services. “Red Cross came at 8 a.m. and spent the day helping people move out,” said PARC Executive Director Victor Willis, who said tenants had to be out by 11 a.m. “Each of the tenants had
the offer that they could try and stay there, but none did even though they had the legal right.” Only seven tenants remained at the Queen’s Hotel when the Red Cross arrived. “I have no idea what happened (to the other tenants),” he said. “We have no idea where they are, but we do know a number of them are recipients of disability support pension and that was their proof of address.” Willis said he plans to follow the paper trail with the help of Parkdale Community Legal Services (PCLS) to find the missing 20 tenants. The Queen’s Hotel has tenants paying rent monthto-month, but on paper are deemed guests. A loophole, Parkdale-High Park MPP Cheri DiNovo said the new owner, the BSAR Development Group Ltd., is trying to take advantage of. “Anyone who’s seen the

building knows it’s not a hotel,” she said. “They’re hanging their hat on the loop hole that it was zoned as a hotel. Had we had the time we could have proved that. Who knows what will happen to them (tenants) now. The housing list in the GTA alone has a standard waiting list of 10 to 12 years. It’s just unconscionable.” Willis said the tenants were recently asked to switch
their rental agreements from monthly to weekly, a move he said he believes was done in order to give the tenants a week notice of eviction as opposed to the proper 90 days as per the Landlord and Tenant Act. The BSAR Development Group Ltd. bought the space about two months ago; the developer gave notice to residents of the renovations a week before their eviction
date, Willis said. “The fact that this landlord or developer is acting in such a way tells you what kind of developer he is,” Willis said. “I don’t think he cares about the community. He is only out for profit and he’s certainly gotten off on the wrong foot with the community. This is exactly the kind of developer we don’t want in Parkdale.” Willis said the eviction has been deemed illegal by the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing. A judgement, he said, that is rarely made. “It’s one of those things where it’s a hollow victory because the reality is they’ve threatened everybody so nobody wanted to be there. But this also means the landlord could get fined up to $25,000,” Willis said. “And under the way the Residential Tenancies Act (of Ontario) is written, any of the tenants who were illegally evicted for the renovation work actually have a right
of first refusal and the right to return to a unit at the same price,” Willis told The Villager. Since Friday, Willis has been working with to Parkdale Community Legal Services (PCLS) to see that the fine will be laid. “This was such a self-motivated and greedy act, so I’d like to see them hit with an appropriate fine. They should know better,” he said. DiNovo agreed. “...Who, in good conscience, throws vulnerable people with disabilities on the street with one week’s notice. I just don’t get it. It’s shocking. Who does that?” When contacted by The Parkdale Villager, the BSAR Development Group Ltd. owner’s assistant, who declined to provide his name, refused to comment.
