Queen’s Hotel evicted tenant has no intention of returning HILARY CATON hcaton@insidetoronto.com For three years, Parkdale resident Treva Bondarenko has called the Queen’s Hotel home. For years the building operated as a rooming house, not a hotel, and she paid $670 a

month. Her room had a mini fridge, a private bathroom and a microwave. It wasn’t much, she said, but it was a room to call her own. That is, until she got a notice from the new owners of the building, the BSAR Group of Companies. The notice, which was posted in the building at the end of

July, stated all tenants would be evicted from the premises due to extensive renovations and had to be out by 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 7. That gave Bondarenko a week to gather her belongings and find a new place to stay. “They just made dozens of people homeless,” Bondarenko

said. “You have to understand, in this building you have people with really bad mental health issues,” she told The Villager. “And where are they going to go?” Bondarenko was one of the tenants remaining at the Queen’s Hotel, 1521 Queen St. >>>MINISTRY, page 13

Joint mural project connects community to food HILARY CATON hcaton@insidetoronto.com

F

or the past six weeks, six Parkdale teens have been working with local artists to create a mural of their own that depicts the community’s connection to food. “We’re just trying to build something that reflects our community,” said 18-year-old Emmanuel Taylor, who heard about the project through his mentor at the Masaryk-Cowan Community Centre. “It’s a great way to pass the summer... I would love to do it again.” The mural, consisting of about 16 panels, will be installed in the Green P Parking lot, at 1325 Queen St. W., in the fall. The mural is a collaborative project between Greenest City, a community-based organization that builds healthy inclusive neighbourhoods through environmental education and

empowerment, and StART Partnership Program, a city-run initiative that provides funding for communities looking to beautify their neighbourhood with street art. The project received a $20,000 grant from StreetARToronto to complete the mural, which covers the cost of materials, provides an honorarium for the teens involved and pays the artist. “The theme is Parkdale food stories,” said Monique Kelemen, the program coordinator with Greenest City for the project. “The mural, in the end, will depict our community’s connection to food. It’s just something that’s been so fascinating for me, hearing all the different stories and connections the people of Parkdale have to food. People were farmers before in India and Tibet and now they’re in a highrise on Jameson with no access to land and food to grow.” Kelemen told The

Young artists work Aug. 7 on panels for a Parkdale food mural slated to go up at 1325 Queen St. W. in the fall.

Villager she, along with the participants, went around the neighbourhood to ask residents their earliest food memories. “It was also really important to me to make it a youth program so we could engage some local youth this summer and get them more connected to their community and talking to people,” she said. Teens didn’t need to have

a background in visual arts to participate, but they did need to submit a cover letter and resume to snag a spot. Taylor said he wasn’t sure if he was going to sign up because he hadn’t done visual arts since Grade 9. He was nervous, he said. “But once I started, I realized you don’t have to be great artist, just a team player. I enjoyed the painting more than I thought I

would,” said Taylor, who is used to computer- and graffiti-style art. The lead artist on the project is local resident and artist Jim Bravo, who is responsible for the photo installations on the planters along Jameson Avenue. He works with the teens three times a week from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the panels. When The Villager caught up with the group last week, they were working in an alley beside Masaryk-Cowan Community Centre. “The last few days we’ve made some leaps and bounds. We’ve done pretty well,” said Bravo, who’s working in collaboration

with Toronto-based illustration Caitlin Taguibao. “We guide them along. We do the main drawings and they come in and work it out.” Bravo was working on a panel dedicated to hunting and fishing – “the old methods of gathering food as opposed to going to the supermarket and collecting it,” he said. Panels also include images of people sharing food with different types of dishes, fruits and veggies the residents of Parkdale enjoy. The mural will replace the current Parkdale Focus murals in the parking lot and will also be on display on the sheds of the garden near Masaryk Park. “It’s good that we’re continuing something that’s Parkdale centric on a very big wall,” Bravo said. “It’s a really cool project, I’m happy to be a part of it.”

The Ex: marking a special time of year for Toronto families

Write us

T

oronto summers have an ebb and flow to them marked by different events and traditions, which define the season, but with the opening of the Canadian National Exhibition comes the clearest sign of all: the end of summer is approaching. It’s part of life in the city and of being a Torontonian, and we wouldn’t have it any other way. The 137th annual version of The Ex opens Friday and continues until Labour Day on Monday, Sept. 7. The fair itself has its own traditions, including lots of wacky food creations, concerts, displays, theme days and the Canadian International Air Show to wrap it all up on the Labour Day weekend. Toronto families carefully pick the days they will attend based on events they to see, and those tradiour view want tions are handed down through the generations. You can pretty A Toronto much bet if your parents made a point of going to The Ex on the tradition air show weekend because that’s what they wanted to see, you will returns now be taking your own kids, or maybe even grandkids, to also see the air show. Others make attending on Warriors Day or for the Labour Day parade a part of their family traditions. Respecting those traditions has been one of the reasons the CNE continues to be so successful and holds a special place in the hearts of Torontonians. The Ex, though, is not bound by tradition as it is also the place to see the newest innovations and products. The CNE also makes sure it offers new events and experiences every year, and this year one of them is the Craft Beer Fest, which takes place for the first time this summer. Though often referred to as bittersweet for kids who start counting the days until school starts again, the CNE is far from the only thing going on in Toronto over the remaining days of summer. Just a quick look around shows us this weekend has the Scarborough Afro-Carib Fest at Albert Campbell Square, the Tirgan Iranian Festival at Harbourfront, Ukrainian Independence Day at Centennial Park in Etobicoke, and the Tommy Thompson Park Butterfly Festival in the Beach to name but a few. As always, if you’re looking for things to do in the city, visit us at insidetoronto.com/toronto-events

Transit isn’t the only issue on minds of Toronto voters in federal election

T

here’s a federal election coming up on the distant horizon. For now, the talk on Toronto airwaves is about criminal justice, cheques, and other matters related to the Mike Duffy trial. At some point in the long weeks leading up to Oct. 19, one hopes that talk will centre closer to Toronto and our needs. Earlier in the summer, Mayor John Tory held meetings with representatives of the Liberals and New Democrats, and earlier in the year spent time making Toronto’s case to the federal Conservatives. As he pointed out then, things were looking pretty good for Toronto: two of three parties were committed to funding his Smart Track transit plan, and Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau appears to be waiting for

david nickle the city the right time to say so. So really – for Toronto, there is no downside. Well, that would be the case if transit weren’t the only story. Toronto has other needs that only the federal government can properly meet. We could use help with our crumbling stock of affordable housing. We could do with a federally funded national child care program. And back at transit – once we get finished building a Scarborough subway along about the same route as the Smart Track plan, we’re going to need money for the downtown relief line that everyone agrees is the really crucial transit improve-

ment. These all should be, at some point, deal-breaking or – making policies in making a rational choice for our next prime minister. As matters are unfolding, however, a rational, Toronto-centric choice is not what will be on most Toronto voters’ minds. If voters were taking simple enlightened selfinterest into account, then the child benefit cheques that the federal Conservatives sent out just before the writ was dropped should have had some impact on polling for them. While it’s early days in this very long election, it’s a safe bet that voting Torontonians will be dividing along lines more familiar from the past couple of elections: Harper Nation, if you will, and the remainder

of the city looking to turf the bum out. That divide was in evidence when Harper stopped by Etobicoke (ground zero for that other Nation) in the company of an angry, foul-mouthed man who swore at reporters and suggested they all cheated on their taxes. From another part of the city, I and other Torontonians watched the display with a horrified recognition. Many elections ago, former Prime Minister Kim Campbell made the point that elections were no time to discuss issues. Those things get sorted out afterwards, when we’ve all gotten the bile out of our systems. David Nickle is The Villager’s city hall reporter. His column appears Thursdays. Hula-hooping performer will show off her spinning skills hilary caton hcaton@insidetoronto.com It all started out as cool party trick. Isabella Hoops, whose real name is Kirsten Harvey, was enamoured with a group of girls who were hula hooping at a party she attended after she finished a shift as an actor at a dinner theatre show in Edmonton. “I remember just staring at them for the longest time. I was just mesmerized,” Hoops said. “I stared at them for about 10 minutes and then one of them eventually came over and said, ‘Do you want to hoop with us?’” She said she was a bit apprehensive at first; she wasn’t sure if she’d be good at it or not, but she got the hang of it. “I ended up buying a hoop that night,” she added. Since then her interest in what she calls ‘hooping’ has grown exponentially. She moved to Toronto and got involved with the company Zero Gravity Circus to build up her skills. She also slowly began working it into her routine as a busker and nearly a decade later, Hoops has turned her passion into a business. She’s now the founder and owner of Isabella Hoops Entertainment and also teaches hula hooping in several different Toronto schools. And for the third year, Torontonians can catch Hoops as one of the 170 worldclass performers at Toronto International BuskerFest for Epilepsy, presented by Scotiabank, from Aug. 27 to 30. “It’s an awesome festival. All the volunteers and support from the city is great,” said the Queen Street and Roncesvalles Avenue resident. This is the largest festival of its kind in North America and is also the world’s biggest epilepsy fundraising event. Last year BuskerFest raised $250,000 for Epilepsy Toronto. For 2015, the street festival plans to take over the Downtown Yonge neighbourhood from Aug. 27 to 30 throughout the Yonge Street corridor, from Queen to College Streets, which

will be closed to traffic, and surrounding areas including Yonge-Dundas Square. There are more than 70 acts including daredevil stunts, fire manipulations, acrobatics, aerial acts, music, magic, comedy, contortion, dance, balloon creations, mime and more. Hoops has two shows she’ll be performing. The first is an interactive “silly” performance as Kiki the clown for children, which includes a 20-hoop trick that she’s mastered. The second is as Isabella Hoops, where she will perform her latest “mind-boggling trick.” “It’s called the slinky,” Hoops told the Villager. Standing at just 5’6”, Hoops can manage to fit 30 spinning hula hoops on her entire body. “It looks crazy because it covers my body from head to toe. It’s really cool.” She’s also perfected a trick called the Square that involves spinning a hoop on her knee, foot and two hands. Hoops said she’s learned about

100 tricks over the years all of which are built upon an assortment of basic hula hooping skills that all tie into one another. “It’s like playing an instrument,” she said. “You got to know your scales and nail your scales, and do them over and over again and once you can do that really well, then you can build on that and get into some crazy intermediate to advance skills.” Hoops uses her entire body for her tricks, she said, adding it goes beyond the classic movement of getting the hoop to stay around your waist. “I can hula hoop around my neck, knees, foot, hands, shoulder...there’s endless possibilities. I can even move different hoops in opposite directions on the same body part,” she said. “The waist is just a starting point.”

Boulevard Club gets a $14-million west wing extension HILARY CATON hcaton@insidetoronto.com It’s been five years in the making and on Aug. 12, a day after its 110th birthday, the Boulevard Club hosted a grand opening of the rebuild of its new west wing. Members looked at the new facility at 1491 Lake Shore Blvd. and enjoyed music and food. The $14-million facility is the newest addition to the club’s existing amenities. Shaped like a sail and designed by the award-winning Toronto-based Teeple Architects, the 28,000-square-

foot, two-storey structure was a much-needed rebuild, said Mike Babin, past-president of the club. “The building it replaced was over 80 years old. It wasn’t insulated. The locker rooms were small and it was in constant need of repairs,” Babin said. “One of the major issues was that it was always flooding because the building was so low. This building is much higher than the rest of the club to avoid the flooding.” Babin said the lakeside athletics club plays a role in the community through its annual fundraising events. Funds

tiatives. Construction of the wing began 16 months ago and although the inside is complete and ready to use,

there is still landscaping that needs to be done. The new addition is nestled between the outdoor swimming pool and tennis courts to one side and connects to the Wave Café on the other. It includes change rooms, upper and lower level lounge, a state-of-the-art 5,000-square-foot badminton centre, sports therapy treatment rooms, an aesthetics spa and a 3,000-square-foot multi-purpose room or gymnasium where any of the 4,000 members can play volleyball or basketball. It also has a roof-top patio with panoramic views of

the lakefront. Babin said he wanted to make sure windows were included in the design of the new wing. “The old building had no windows. Here we are right on the lake and how could we not have any windows?,” he said. “We made it a point to have windows incorporated in the new design. When you have a view you might as well take advantage of it.” The building is modern in comparison to the rest of the club. “We wanted something that was unique and not traditional like the rest of the building,” he said.

OVO Fest after-party shooting: Coroner’s inquest set into death of Katelynn Sampson, 7 Drake expresses sympathy JOANNA LAVOIE jlavoie@insidetoronto.com A date for a coroner’s inquest into the death of seven-yearold Parkdale resident Katelynn Angel Sampson has been set for Monday, Nov. 9. Dr. Roger Skinner, the regional supervising coroner for central region, Toronto west office, made the announcement late last week. Katelynn’s lifeless body was found in the apartment where she lived at 105 West Lodge Ave. on Aug. 3, 2008 at 2:30 a.m. She was pronounced dead at the scene. Emergency crews quickly ascertained that Katelynn had obvious signs of trauma about her entire body. Police believed the girl, who attended Parkdale Junior and Senior Public School, died at the hands of her legal guardians Donna Irving and her partner Warren Johnson and

the pair were both charged with murder. Irving, who had a criminal record that included convictions for drugs, prostitution, and assault, was a longtime friend of Katelynn’s mother, Bernice Sampson. Awarded full custody of the little girl

in June 2008, Irving had been taking care of Katelynn for some time. The common-law couple pleaded guilty to seconddegree murder charges in Katelynn’s death and are currently both serving a life sentence in prison with no chance of parole for 15 years. The inquest, which is expected to last four weeks, will examine the events surrounding Katelynn’s death and the jury may make recommendations aimed at preventing similar deaths. About 30 witnesses will be speaking at the inquest, which will be held at the Forensic Ser vices and Coroners Complex, Court Room A, 25 Morton Shulman Ave., Toronto. Dr. William Lucas will preside as the inquest coroner, while Nicole Bailey will serve as the counsel to the coroner. For more information, call 647-329-1828.

The words ‘one in a million’, ‘loved and not forgotten’ and ‘RIP Ariela’ are written in brightly coloured chalk cover a parking space between the Dufferin Gates and Springhurst Avenue. The memorial is in honour of Ariela Navarro-Fenoy, 26, of Toronto, who was fatally shot near the Dufferin Gates Aug. 4 following an OVO Fest after-party at Muzik nightclub on Exhibition grounds. Navarro-Fenoy was one of two people killed in the shooting around 3 a.m. The other victim is Duvel Hibbert, 23, of Brampton. Toronto rapper Drake, who hosted the popular OVO Fest at Molson Canadian Amphitheatre the weekend of the fatal shootings, was silent on the situation up until Friday, Aug. 14 when he released the following statement on his website.

A shrine has been set up for Ariela Navarro-Fennoy, 26, near the Dufferin Gates.

“I am plagued and pained by the violence that continues to escalate in our city. I stare into the eyes of so many young people and I wish to see them all shine as bright as they possibly can in this lifetime. I encourage my generation to show as much value and gratitude as you can for the lives we have been gifted. My deepest condolences go out to the Navarro-Fenoy and Hibbert families for their loss of Ariela and Duvel. Along with them I send my condolences to all of the families

that have lost loved ones to the senseless violence that has and continues to occur in our city.” Ward 19 Councillor Mike Layton ( Trinity-Spadina) urged people to come forward. “It was a terrible tragedy and we need police to find out who the perpetrators were, we also need to know what happened,” Layton said

The move itself represents a diminished plan to honour Macdonald after a city survey found the vast majority of respondents were opposed to naming the entire station after him. Construction work back on the Gardiner

One lane closed in each direction Construction work to replace the deck on the elevated portion of the Gardiner Expressway from Strachan Avenue to Bathurst Street resumed yesterday. During this closure there will be two lanes of traffic in each direction. The construction, which is part of the city’s strategic rehabilitation program for the Gardiner Expressway, is expected to be completed by Oct. 31, 2016. The lane closures will extend beyond the construction zone to better accommodate traffic flow and enable the city to set up access routes for the planned demolition of the Dunn and Dowling avenues bridges in 2015 to 2016. The daily closure of the westbound ramp

from Jameson Avenue to the Gardiner Expressway will be temporarily suspended during the construction period. When the work is completed, the normal closure on weekdays from 3 to 7 p.m. will be reinstated. The city is taking steps to minimize disruption to drivers during the Gardiner rehabilitation, including: • Implementing traffic signal timing changes to enhance traffic flow on nearby routes, and • working to improve the response to incidents on the Gardiner Expressway. The city is urging drivers affected by the expressway work to consider options such as carpooling, taking transit, cycling to work or travelling outside the usual rush hours.
