Holiday Fest in West Queen West helps local shelter More than 25 businesses launch inaugural event HILARY CATON hcaton@insidetoronto.com Businesses in the West Queen West neighbourhood are banding together to support a local shelter and each other this holiday season. More than 25 businesses are participating in the inaugural launch of Holiday Fest in West Queen West, which encourages the community to donate a non-

The initiative is the brainchild of Jon Polubiec, the owner of the restaurant Come and Get It at 676 Queen St. W., who brainstormed the idea more than two weeks ago. “We wanted to shift some of the holiday focus from big box stores like the Eaton Centre to supporting our community and local shelter,” Polubiec said. “It’s a good reason to get >>>INITIATIVE, page 2

Initiative benefits women’s shelter that offers hot meals, counselling support >>>from page 1 everyone on board to work together.” The recipient of the donated items is the Salvation Army’s Florence Booth House, a 64-bed women’s shelter at 723 Queen St. W. that serves single women aged 16 and up. The initiative, and the deals, kicked off Tuesday and will run until Christmas Eve. All participating businesses from Bathurst Street to Euclid Avenue will either have a Salvation Army poster in their window or a set of red balloons with the Salvation Army logo on it. The shelter offers support to women no matter what their situation. They can come to Florence Booth House and enjoy a hot meal three times a day and use any one of their many services including addiction support and counselling support. Women who come to the shelter are also provided with basic provisions such

as clothing, shampoo, soap and towels; essentially the necessities many people take for granted, said Stephanie Corringham, hostel manager for the Florence Booth House. “A lot of women who come in, come with nothing a lot of the time,” she said. “They may have one small bag and that’s it. So being able to provide them with these things is great.” When Corringham was notified by Polubiec that local businesses would be starting this initiative, she said she was not only grateful, but thrilled as well. “We were so excited that they would think about us, and do this for us. It’s always been a great community; the neighbouring businesses always ask how they can help,” Corringham said. “It’s not easy living in a shelter during the holiday season, so we try our best to make it the best we can for

Women’s business ‘accelerator’ kicks off

HILARY CATON hcaton@insidetoronto.com When Samantha Richardson first met co-founder Heather Gamble of Women on the Move, a business accelerator designed for women, she was immediately drawn to her positive, can-do attitude. “I’m a really big idea person and everyone tells me my dreams are way too big and I live on this cloud nine. And then I met Heather and she’s like ‘you’re not dreaming big enough, let’s go bigger than that,’” said Richardson, who runs a startup editing and accounting business. “I like how she thinks and I thought to myself this is where I really need to be. I want to be around people who are like that, rather than being around negative people.” Richardson, like the other 45 members of Women on The Move at 2111 Dundas St. W., is looking to start a profitable business from the ground up and Gamble is there to help. The goal of the business is to put 10,000 women on their “million dollar path” within three to five years. To help do that, Gamble said she provides female entrepreneurs with a positive and productive workspace complete with conference rooms and offices. She also provides nine-month long workshops

in sales and marketing in what she’s dubbed the She Factory. Since its inception in March, Gamble and her cofounder and best friend Nicky Morgan have a range of businesses under their roof from editing to web design and naturopathic services. She’s helped create, with her best friend, a work space and learning environment for women designed by women because they believe “women do business differently.” “They crave community, corporation and collaboration not competition,” Gamble explained.

“Women love being united with purpose and passion and profit tends to be third. Most of society goes profit first. Women don’t work like that.” Gamble added that the space is an intimidation free zone, a safe space where women are given the chance to be themselves. “They’re able to speak up and share their voice and say, ‘I’m having problems in this area.’ So they need a platform to do that and not feel intimidated and not feel like they shouldn’t say something for fear of feeling stupid,” Gamble said.

After working as a bookkeeper with mostly women and then shifting to an accounting firm with mostly men she realized that a maledominated environment just wasn’t for her. “It was really drastic, and I was uncomfortable. I didn’t like it as much. They’re not as open to feeling and talking. Women are emotion and gut feeling and the guys were all analytic and logic,” she admits. “I’m not stone. I hear their logic, but it doesn’t work for me.”

Grenadier Pond skating put on ice - for this winter

DAVID NICKLE dnickle@insidetoronto.com Skating on the sometimes dangerous surface of Grenadier Pond could become legal when it freezes a year from now, but skaters will do so at their own risk, and only be warned to stay off the ice when city staff are certain it will break under their weight. That is the recommendation from the city’s Parks and Environment Committee, as members considered various plans for dealing with the popular skating spot. While city staff have maintained for more than a decade that the ice on the pond in High Park is not safe enough for skating, during last winter’s deep freeze hundreds of skaters from across the city defied a no-skating bylaw and

Skaters take to Grenadier Pond back in February. Officially it’s still not allowed, and new rules being mulled by council won’t be ready until next winter.

took to the ice anyway. Councillors have been grappling with ways to deal with the demand for skating and also managing the city’s liability, should anyone fall through the ice and drown. Pa r k d a l e - H i g h Pa r k Councillor Sarah Doucette urged her colleagues to take the least expensive option on the table, that would see

the city simply test the ice for thickness and demark a small portion of the pond with either yellow or red flags. “If the ice there is not safe it will be a red flag. If it is safe it will be a yellow flag and it will say use at your own risk,” Doucette said. “It’s all about liability for the city. I understand that, but I also understand that for 100 years

– Councillor Sarah Doucette

people are going to skate on the pond and they’re not going to stop.” Doucette has asked city staff to include the $50,000 annual cost of the plan into next year’s budget. That means that it will be too late for the system to be in place this winter season, but should be up and running for the next. Council must still approve the start of the plan at its December meeting, but ultimately it will be decided in the winter as council debates next year’s budget. In the meantime, it is still illegal to skate on Grenadier Pond.

A “balanced approach” taken by the TTC’s board of directors means cash fares and token prices are going up for 2016, but not Metropasses. The board voted unanimously to support staff recommendations for next year’s TTC and Wheel-Trans operating budgets, which will include a 25-cent increase to fares paid by cash to $3.25. The cost of a token will go up 10 cents to $2.90 per token. The board also supported keeping the price of the Metropass static following years of increases, as well as freezing all student and seniors’ fares for the time being. TTC chair Josh Colle said the decision was a realization the TTC can’t keep raising Metropass prices which have increased to $141.50, among the highest-priced unlimited travel pass among North American transit providers, while keeping cash fares unchanged. “At a certain point we can’t keep continuing to rely on the Metropass user as an endless well of money we can just go to,” said Colle after the board vote last week at Toronto City Hall. “Could we lose some ridership? Staff has factored that in but on the whole we still come up with more revenue.” The decision means the TTC faces a funding gap of around $58 million for next year’s operating budget, which it will attempt to fill by seeking an increase in the annual per-rider subsidy allocated to it by Toronto council. Last year, the TTC received almost $480 million from the city for the 2015 subsidy, which also funded $95 million in service improvements trumpeted by Colle, as well as Mayor John Tory. This time around, Colle said the TTC would ask for $41 million more than last year, which will also fund nearly $14 million worth of service

enhancements: improving Queen and King streetcar operations, boosting subway and bus reliability, and opening the subway earlier on Sunday mornings. Other plans like adding streetcar service to Cherry Street, will remain unfunded.

At a certain point we can’t keep continuing to rely on the Metropass user as an endless well of money. – TTC chair Josh Colle

Colle said if council doesn’t accept the TTC’s subsidy request, a tough choice would have to be made by the board to cut service or further raise fares. “Really, the only two options we have are to look at fares or service, so if the city is unable to fill the gap I’m sure there will be a robust debate back at this table,” he said. Echoing TTC CEO Andy Byford, Colle said the transit commission was hamstrung by not knowing the exact amount the city will give for this year’s subsidy. The amount is determined as part of the city’s annual budget deliberations and won’t be known until next year. The board supported Councillor Vince Crisanti’s motion to freeze seniors’ and student fares pending a review of transit equity policies which is expected to take place early next year. It also unanimously endorsed Colle’s motion to find more revenue from TTC licencing and merchandise. As the chair pointed out, the TTC doesn’t make a cent off items bearing the transit commission’s likeness unlike other major transit agencies like New York’s MTA or the London Underground. ~With files from David Nickle

he Syrian humanitarian crisis has gripped the world, and the world is finally responding. Traumatized by the horrors of war, a life away from unimaginable violence is what these refugees seek. They are looking for a life of peace, a life of hope, and a future for their children in a land free from bombings, unwarranted arrests and detentions, rape, torture, intimidation and, of course, death. This is what Syrian refugees are fleeing from. Lifeline Syria, a Toronto-based organization, will recruit, train, and assist sponsor groups to welcome and support 1,000 Syrian refugees coming to Canada as permanent immigrants to our view resettle in the Greater Toronto Area over the next two years. It’s time to Its website states some startling facts: more than 75 per cent of put people Syrian refugees are women and before politics children; fewer than one per cent of Syria’s refugees will get a chance to be resettled overseas. And after nearly four years of civil war, more than a quarter of a million people have died, more than half of whom are believed to be civilians. It’s our national obligation to help the needy, the afflicted, the poor and the tortured. It’s our national obligation to welcome the Syrian refugees with open arms; not only is it the humane and decent thing to do, but our welcoming nature will help facilitate the settlement process so refugees can move from being victims of war to contributing members of Canadian society. It’s time to put people before politics. The Government of Canada will work with Canadians, including private sponsors, non-governmental organizations, provincial, territorial and local governments to welcome 25,000 Syrian refugees to our country. Welcoming the refugees is not only to benefit their physical health, but their mental and emotional well being. Councillors face a very real budget process It’s about to get real. That was the message from Toronto’s new top bureaucrat to Mayor John Tory and the members of his Executive Committee. For the first time in years, city staff will be crafting a preliminary operating and capital budget that will need serious political attention. City manager Peter Wallace told the Tuesday meeting of the powerful committee in no uncertain terms that if council wants to balance the budget and provide a property tax increase at around the rate of inflation, council’s going to have to figure it out. “We have a very challenging decision environment,” said Wallace, who came to the city earlier this year from his job as head of the civil service at Queen’s Park. “Pressure is around five per cent before any political decisions are made by council. That is typically the type of pressure that we see, but that is not yet consistent with a residential tax rate at

david nickle the city the rate of inflation and it’s not consistent with known capital pressures. With staff recommendations we can partially, but not fully resolve that gap.” This is a big change from the way council has become used to receiving its budget recommendations. Since the middle days of David Miller’s administration, city staff have presented a budget that more or less balances out, which is to say, the city’s programs are more or less funded by a property tax increase that more or less hits the rate of inflation. Sometimes, surprises happen as earlier this year, when money the city had been expecting from the province didn’t materialize. Council figured out a complicated self-borrowing scheme to maintain the property tax increase then,

but that was a one-time fix. This time, council is on notice that the situation hasn’t fixed itself, and city departments have generally not been able to meet the target of two per cent reductions that Tory promised would happen over the course of the year. So it’s going to be up to council, and Wallace is hopeful Toronto’s 45 elected leaders will be up to the challenge to find political solutions where mere administration is not enough. I would be more hopeful myself, had I not watched council try to do exactly that back in the early days of amalgamation, when the city was placed under extraordinary financial constraints by the downloading of hundreds of millions of dollars of new services. What resulted then was a combination of a war of words between the city and the province, and a desperate attempt to rearrange the city’s finances to enable a

property tax freeze that was finally unaffordable. Among other things, the city got deep into a computer leasing deal that cost taxpayers tens of millions of dollars and required a $26-million public inquiry to sort out. When staff brought forward their unbalanced budgets then, councillors were faced with hair-whitening options for savings or revenue that went nowhere and paralyzed the process. The solution was, ultimately, to engage staff in providing a real budget with real solutions. It made it all a bit dull. Tory has made a mandate of being a bit dull, and it will truly be a test of that mandate, to see how he deals with what is going to be, once again, a very interesting and very, very real budget process.

Go Transit eyes fare hike for 2016 A GO Transit fare hike for 2016 is on the agenda of Metrolinx’s board of directors, which meets today. The regional transit provider is recommending a five per cent hike, which would mean an increase of 60 cents for any fares exceeding $8.25. Five per cent annual increases have been the norm for GO, under the justification the money is used to fund service improvements. Actor Dejan Loyola sees himself in Dr. Dev Sekara in TV’s Saving Hope HILARY CATON hcaton@insidetoronto.com For Canadian actor Dejan Loyola, playing a young doctor who uses humour to lighten up a situation on the medical drama Saving Hope comes naturally. “His charms and the fact that he’s always looking for the humour in situations are things I can relate to,” Loyola told The Villager. “There are sometimes, in some scenes, where I wonder if the writers are writing him for me.” Part of the draw to audition for the show for its third season was its “strong sense of humour in the scripts,” he said. Loyola plays the role of Dr. Dev Sekara, a first-year surgical resident, who has a budding love interest with his co-worker Dr. Cassie Williams, played by actress Kim Shaw. The show is a medical drama with a supernatural edge that centers around the lives of the doctors and nurses at Hope Zion Hospital. “What I liked the most about him (Sekara) is that there’s this suggestion of quiet brilliance. And you always want to play characters with flaws and he just tries a little bit too hard at times,” Loyola added. “But he’s very sweet and compassionate and wants to do the right thing, but sometimes trips himself up.” The Queen West and Crawford streets resident is also no stranger to the medical world, he was a mental health-care worker for chil-

Although he’s been submerged in the medical world in some way, he said neither one of his parents were shocked when he decided to become an actor full time. “My father was a very artcentric person and wanted to be a fashion designer when he was young,” Loyola said. “But his dad always wanted him to go the route of becoming a diplomat or involved in the military like he was. So I think that’s part of the reason why he’s been so supportive to give me that.” Loyola has appeared in a handful of television shows including the sci-fi shows V and Fringe and was also in the fantasy film Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief. classes at a community theatre in his hometown of Salt Spring Island in Vancouver when he was seven years old, while being homeschooled. He was 12 when he first went to public school, which he admits was a bit of a struggle for him, but he used comedy to help make friends over the years. In high school he followed his passion for acting and joined a successful improv team. By the time he was 18, Loyola was taking acting seriously and found himself an agent and scored his first gig on the TV show V. His acting career snowballed as he snagged roles on television moves and Nickelodeon films. Now Loyola shows up in the living rooms of Canadians every Thursday night at 9 p.m., but it wasn’t always easy and he credits his ability to push through to his parents. “My career choice was always fully supported and accepted. I feel really blessed in that sense, there are a lot of different ways you can have privilege growing up, but I really am quite aware that not everybody gets that kind of unwavering support,” Loyola explained. “There were years where I wasn’t able to scrape by between a part-time job and the gigs I was getting and they not only supported me emotionally, but financially.” Now Loyola’s parents host viewing parties and call him after every show. “...I can say, to my parents, ‘Hey it wasn’t a totally crazy idea to get into acting.’

LEARN. CONNECT. REJUVENATE.

>>>from page 1 United Church (formerly Emmanuel Howard Park United Church) Rev. Anne Hines. Together, they decided on the two existing mature trees that flank the north entrance of the church at Wright and Roncesvalles avenues. “The entrance to the Village Healing Centre (at the church) is there; the flea market is there. “In a way, it’s kind of an entrance to the heart of the community,” Feihl said. “The trees are right there beside the sidewalk flanking the street.” The BIA, Roncesvalles United Church and RoncyWorks, a casual network of volunteers who work together to improve the neighbourhood, are inviting community members to help fill the trees with solar-powered holiday lights Saturday. Lights cost $15 each.

They can dedicate the light to someone special or include a blessing. It personalizes it. – Veronica Feihl, RoncyWorks co-ordinator

The lights are to celebrate community spirit as well as all rituals, Kwanza, Winter Solstice, Christmas, Hanukkah and Yuletide, which are all symbolic of light-bearing practices. RoncyWorks volunteers, who are helping to organize the project, will provide solar light supplies, which can be assembled swiftly on site. Do-it-yourself instructions are available at roncyworks. org so individuals and/ or groups can make their own. The lights are LED and are therefore low heat. People are invited to compose a message

to put inside clear jars. “They can dedicate the light to someone special or include a blessing. “It p e r s o n a l i z e s i t ,” said Feihl, who is also a RoncyWorks co-ordinator. Whatever funds are left over from the sale of the light supplies will go toward Roncesvalles United Church’s annual holiday meal, she added. Hand-crafted (or purchased) solar lights, and donations are welcome and can be dropped off at the church, 214 Wright Ave., all day Sunday, or Monday to Friday between 9:30 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. or on Saturday at the thrift shop in the church basement from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Saturday, Dec. 5 tree lighting event starts at 1 p.m. and continues until 4 p.m.
