Police make arrest in New Year’s Day 2012 murder HILARY CATON hcaton@insidetoronto.com Toronto police have charged a man in the 2012 Liberty Village murder of 24-yearold Mike Pimentel. Shawn Poirier, 30, was arrested in Calgary Dec. 3 and was brought to Toronto Tuesday, Dec. 8. He is charged with second-degree murder. At a police media conference held last Thursday, Jennifer Defraga, Pimentel’s g i r l f r i e n d a t t h e t i m e, described the news as “overwhelming.” Defraga attended the press conference along with Pimentel’s mother Gloria Luz and sister Carla Pimentel. “Emotions are running high,” Defraga said, and proceeded to thank the homicide unit for their help, while fighting back tears. Pimentel was stabbed to death early on New Year’s Day 2012 after he and some friends left a party at the Liberty Grand, 25 British
with hopes of sparking new leads. He used the hashtag #mikepimentelmurder. “It was done to reinvigorate the investigation and attract the attention of

Colombia Dr. Acting Supt. Greg McLane, who led the conference, said Pimentel was separated from his friends and became involved in an altercation with a man. Pimentel was later seen in Liberty Village between
1:30 and 1:45 a.m. staggering in the East Liberty Street and Hanna Avenue area and suffering from a stab wound. He was taken to hospital and died of his injuries. McLane said there is no evidence Poirier and Pimentel knew each other
before the stabbing and he is not aware if the men attended the same New Year’s Eve party. Police are encouraging the taxi driver who picked up Poirier that night to come forward to help investigators. McLane said the driver was
given a cellphone to contact the suspect. The arrest comes roughly a year after Det. Tam Bui of the homicide squad began tweeting clues and photos related to the case, such as high heels, hair extensions, and a key chain, on Twitter
party goers,” McLane said. “We received very significant responses from the public.” McLane said the feedback was “quite remarkable” as it engaged the public and “sparked their curiosity” in the case. Although the arrest provides some closure, Pimentel’s family knows it won’t bring him back, said Carla, who described her brother as a “great guy. Everybody wanted to be around him.” Pimentel’s mother is still coping with the loss. “(New Year’s Eve) will never be the same. For me it’s not the same,” Luz said. “It’s hard on my heart. I miss my son very much.”
St. Anne’s Christmas concert drums up a medley of music selections HILARY CATON hcaton@insidetoronto.com
dec
Cantate, meaning sing-a-long in Latin, is exactly what St. Anne’s Anglican Church is inviting the community to do at this year’s Christmas concert at 270 Gladstone Ave. The third annual Community Cantate - a Neighbourhood Christmas Concert, which takes place Sun. Sunday, Dec. 2 0 , 3 p. m . , plans to ramp up the spirit of togetherness and giving this holiday season. The afternoon’s proceeds will help support the Youth Scholarship Program of 14 Division’s Community Police Liaison Committee (CPLC). The scholarship grants high school students in the area who are passionate about helping the community with a $3,000 scholarship to the university or college of
20
their choice. “It just seems so logical that you give support to people who do that (actively help their community),” said Gary van der Meer, St. Anne’s pastor of four years. “They’re going to be volunteers their whole life and probably be involved in their neighbourhood and community their whole life and that’s just a gift to everybody.” For the past three years, the church has been putting together this Christmas concert because it helps build valued community connections. “This is a wonderful way for us to get to know the community and offer something that contributes to the health of the community,” said van der Meer. In the past the St. Anne’s Christmas concert has stuck to the classical Christmas hits, which van der Meer admits isn’t exactly the true representation of “the mosaic of
musical tastes in the city.” This year the concert plans to offer up some variety of Christmas carols that reflect the church’s unique taste in music as well as those who attend its service.
“
This is a wonderful way for us to get to know the community and offer something that contributes to the health of the community. – Gary van der Meer, pastor
People can expect classical, jazz, and blues versions of their favourite Christmas songs sung by the church choir, The Junction Trio, Leah Solomaa and Ken Whiteley. “We’re trying to appeal to all sorts of demographics and we wanted to stress our inclusion of young people,”
said John-Luke Addison, St. Anne’s new director of music. It will also be an interfaith celebration with remarks by Ilyas Ally, producer of Let the Quran Speak, and Sister Agnes of the Carmelite Sisters of the Divine Heart of Jesus, along with other interfaith guests. “We have made a point of there being an interfaith element to the Christmas concert. Especially in this time where there’s this intolerance. We need to set an example,” van der Meer said. “It’s not at all about, if you don’t agree with us, therefore we don’t talk to you. This is about us all working together regardless of our belief systems to make our world and community a better place.” Tickets to the concert are $15 for adults and $10 for seniors and students.

Citizens must condemn ‘blip’ of gun violence W
hile the recent uptick in gun violence that took place in Toronto this past week shouldn’t be cause for alarm, it should be a call for law-abiding citizens to condemn any violent crimes regardless of where they occur in the city. Beginning Friday afternoon, a fatal drive-by shooting was reported in the entertainment district downtown, which was followed by a separate shooting incident at a small plaza minutes away from Fairview Mall near Don Mills Road and Sheppard Avenue. The following night, police responded to a call after gunfire erupted at Keele Street and Eglinton Avenue where a baby shower was taking place in a nearby building. Police Chief Mark Saunders reassured the public that Toronto remains one of the safest urban cities in North America, calling the our view rash of weekend violence “a blip.” He added that police will be Join groups doing what they can to bring the number of shooting inciworking dents down. for safe But it’s not just a police and law enforcement issue. communities Whenever gun violence is reported anywhere in the city, there’s a danger in the complacency felt by residents when they discover such violent acts have taken place in another neighbourhood. Instead of just reading the headlines in the newspaper and shrugging a shoulder, there may be opportunities to get involved with organizations that are already working to make communities safer through a number of outreach initiatives. Perhaps more can be done to ensure residents and businesses in at-risk neighbourhoods feel less neglected and isolated by demonstrating any violence in the city is unacceptable. Torontonians do indeed have the privilege of living in a safe city, but it’ll take more than just the police doing their jobs to keep it that way. So while it shouldn’t be a cause for alarm that Toronto streets are no longer safe, it should be a cause for concern that not all violent crimes are taken seriously.

Former mayor’s tax breeds complacency
L
et us take a moment to sing the praises of David Miller. This has not been a popular pastime for many years. Indeed, it made one suspect in certain circles from nearly the moment Torontonians decided to elect him mayor in 2003. Try saying a good word about Miller in 2007, the year he strong-armed Toronto councillors into approving the Municipal Land Transfer Tax (MLTT), and you’d be run out of certain parts of town even whistling a happy tune. Well, that was then. On Tuesday morning, Toronto’s new City Manager Peter Wallace made it clear that everybody – taxa-phobic conservatives and spend-o-philes in the ranks of the municipal New Democratic Party, and everybody in between – owe it all to the blond lawyer from High Park and his notion of raising revenues by taxing real estate
transactions. The Municipal Land Transfer Tax, Wallace explained at the 2016 operating and capital budget launch, is the single biggest factor in allowing Toronto Council to balance budgets with modest tax increases and reasonable service levels. Nothing has saved this city’s bacon like it. OK, that’s enough singing now. Miller’s land transfer tax was what you might call an excellent bet in a highstakes game that led to a series of very lucky breaks for the city. Revenue from the tax that adds a percentage to real estate transactions has grown steadily year by year, just as the value of real estate transactions has increased, in each year exceeding expectations of finance staff very dramatically. Wallace laid it bare. When property tax revenues were increasing by around two to two-and-
david nickle the city a-half per cent a year, the city’s revenue was increasing by about five-and-ahalf per cent, and that – not service cuts, not operating efficiencies, not the elimination of trains of gravy – were what kept the city afloat. He also pointed out it is unrealistic to expect this to continue. That’s still not bad – but it also won’t do. In 2016, the land transfer tax revenue will contribute to the $200 million in new revenue, up $50 million from the $150 million of new revenue the city floated on in 2015. In 2017, Wallace figures we’re looking at $100 million. That means that left on its own, Toronto will not be able to deal with its real inflationary rate – four to four-and-a-half per cent – using its existing revenue tools and keeping property
taxes at historic rates. Politicians can respond to this in a couple of ways. One, they can genuinely reduce the size of local government to fall in line with inflationary property tax increases. That will mean cutting services, limiting growth, tough labour negotiations and firing staff. Or they can go to property taxpayers and tell them to pay more – a lot more – to maintain the city in which they live, and admit that inflation is what the city, not the Bank of Canada, says it is in this town. It will be a job in itself to summon the will to take either course. Because while Miller’s gift of the land transfer tax has given an ephemeral respite from hard choices, one lasting legacy is complacency.

Small Works exhibition has big impact on Parkdale artist HILARY CATON hcaton@insidetoronto.com It’s been a few weeks since Parkdale artist Kristen Sharpe quit her job as a restaurant server to fully dedicate her time and energy to painting. “It was difficult trying to do both,” she said. “A lot of it had to get put on the back burner and I felt guilty about it, about not initially pursuing my passion. But so far so good.” Her dedication has been paying off. Three of Sharpe’s pieces will be on display in the Small Works group exhibit at Gallery 1313, a show where 100 per cent of the sales goes to the artist. “You’re spending money that literally goes to the person that made it so they can make more of it and it brings people to Parkdale,”
said Sharpe, who lives in the Queen Street West and Fuller Avenue area. “Support your local artist and community. It helps everybody.” The Small Works exhibition will have more than 20 artists showcasing a variety of media, including photography, painting, textiles and mixed media. All works are priced at under $300. Sharpe originally specialized in photography, but after attending her first year at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design in Halifax, she branched out to painting and drawing. From there she began abstract and landscape painting in Toronto. Sharpe’s artwork submitted for the exhibit actually came from test palettes. “I started playing around with them. So when I was

painting my landscapes I would have these little boards where I would test the colours and those were much more interesting,” Sharpe said. “I mean the landscape was nice, but this, this was the
same colours and they were a nice reflection of each other. They had this really nice relationship. That’s where the small works comes from.” Painting is how Sharpe said she expresses emotion. “I feel through life. You can see which drawings those are, where I’ve painted while I’m upset. They’re very heavy.” she explained. “There’s also colour combinations that don’t go well together and if you use them you’re going to get something kind of unpleasant. But I do I try to go for a non-angry paintings, for the most part.” The Small Works exhibit will be on display at Gallery 1313, 1313 Queen St. W., until Dec. 19.

Do you have what it takes to be a childcare provider? For many parents, or grandparents, who want to stay home with their little ones while bringing in an income, running a home daycare is the perfect solution. Providers with Wee Watch, a licensed home child care agency with over 30 years of experience providing quality home child care across Ontario, receive training, support and competitive pay. Wee Watch Providers care for small numbers of children from age 6 months to 12 years, meeting Ministry standards of only two children under two years old. Parents interested in becoming Providers can look to Wee Watch to help them set up a daycare in their home. Wee Watch provides all of the big equipment, including strollers, high chairs and booster seats, so providers will not need to cover the costs themselves. Wee Watch is known for their daily programming, which includes menu plans, educational components, limited screen time and at least two
hours of outdoor activities. This includes a website where providers can find support, and programming suggestions. Monthly, Wee Learn books are delivered to work on with the children. Wee Watch provides child care manuals and reference materials at the initial training session for new Providers. The agency offers ongoing workshops, training programs and conferences to promote success as a Provider. For the benefit of Providers and the peace of mind for parents, Wee Watch sends a Home Visitor, who is a Registered Early Childhood Educator, to the homes each month. These monthly visits are to support the Providers to ensure quality care and bring resources for the Providers to enhance their programs. Interested candidates can contact us for more details about becoming a Provider 416-233-9191 (Toronto West), 416-748-0770 (Etobicoke) or visit www.weewatch.com.

This well built 2 storey brick detach was originally a 4 bedroom home. It is currently split up into a same family duplex and has retained some of its older charm with beamed ceiling, french doors and high baseboards. The main floor has an addition that is a charming sun room overlooking a “English” styled garden with a water fountain and numerous plants and trees. There is a lovely front porch and 2nd fl rear deck. The roof is about 4 years old and windows are mostly modern thermopanes. The home requires some further updating in the kitchen and bathroom areas as well as the forced air gas furnace. It is ideally located close to the subway, new airport rail link and Humberside, and Western Tech as well as all other amenities. Parking is by permit on the street.

Streetcars now feature all-door boarding Transit riders now have the option to board a TTC streetcar from any door. The practice has been in place during peak hours on the busy 501 Queen, 504 King and 510 Spadina lines. Now all streetcars will allow riders to board from any door at any time or day provided they have a valid Proof of Payment (POP), such as a transfer or a Metropass. Anyone who needs to purchase a fare will still have to enter from the front of the vehicle, with the exception of the new streetcars which have vending machines located right on board. It will cost the TTC around $6 million annually to expand the POP system, mostly to pay for additional fare inspectors. Be warned - if you’re caught riding without paying it’s potentially a $400 fine.

UberHop will allow groups of five to use the new service for morning and afternoon trips from Liberty Village and other downtown neighbourhoods into the Financial District for $5. That’s reminiscent of Line 6, which had planned to run a chartered bus service serving Liberty Village. But that service was halted not long before it was slated to begin running regularly due to questions raised by an unknown government agency — suspected to be the TTC — surrounding its legality. UberHop will officially launch Tuesday, Dec. 15.

According to a press release announcing its launch, the app is directly linked to 6,000 taxis across the country, with plans to add 3,000 more. The Ride also promises to allow access to a cab dispatcher should an e-hailing option be unavailable. Currently there’s no way arrange payment directly through the app a la Uber, and a “convenience fee” of around $2 is assessed for ordering cabs through the service.
