Holiday meal at Masaryk-Cowan Community Centre HILARY CATON hcaton@insidetoronto.com As the Parkdale ActivityRecreation Centre band the Jolly Roger played on the gymnasium stage of the Masaryk-Cowan Community Centre, about 150 community members ate a three-course meal courtesy of the Seventh-day Adventist

Church and Parkdale United Church Monday night. “I’m pleased to see so many people here this evening,” said Pastor Nephtaly Dorzilme. “We’re glad people can come and get a hot meal.” Parkdale residents young and old gathered for a free home-cooked holiday meal, set up buffet style as volunteers

handed out mashed potatoes, turkey, rice and peas, lasagna, dinner rolls, salad and chocolate cake and fruitcake. To wash it down, juice boxes and eggnog were also provided. Family members, friends and complete strangers sat next to one another discussing their day and plans for the week as they enjoyed their meal.

At least 20 volunteers from the church and the Parkdale community helped cook and set up the holiday feast. Keith Mangar, the coordinator of the church dinners which happen the third Tuesday of every month, was pleased with the volunteer and attendee turnout. >>>TWO, page 13

The Parkdale Neighbourhood Land Trust (PNLT) is the recipient of a $210,600 capacity building grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation to create a community land trust (CLT). The non-profit organization will use the majority of the grant for the salary of a coordinator, who will help develop an administrative and governance structure, as well as a proper business plan. The remaining sum will be used for program expenses such as renting community spaces. “We’re really excited and really pleased,” said Judy Josefowicz, chair of the PNLT. “This will allow us to get some initiatives off the ground, and we’ll have a dedicated person to assist the board in implementing its strategic plan.” The PNLT, an organization under the Parkdale People’s Economy Project, has been trying to develop a community land trust since 2010. A community land trust is a concept that has gained some traction in American cities such as New York where it allows a non-profit organization to obtain and manage land for community interests. It would be run by a board that would consist of one-third community members, one-third users and >>>TRILLIUM, page 15

Noise wall art creates awareness of the our digital filter HILARY CATON hcaton@insidetoronto.com Originally from the Ottawa Valley, Mitchell Chan first moved to Toronto in 2006 with hopes of making it in the city as an artist. “I had this notion I was going to pursue art as a career, and I really had no idea what I was doing,” he said. He spent his first couple of months in the city on the second floor of the Gladstone Hotel on Queen Street West. Fast forward six years, and Chan will have his artwork displayed across the street from where he began his art career, thanks to an open call for public art pitches from Metrolinx and the City of Toronto’s StreetARToronto program. Chan’s concept, a series of mosaic murals titled Dot_JPG, was a collaborative effort with his partners at Studio F Minus, a public art and design firm, Bradley Hindson and Michael Simon. Dot_JPG was chosen from a handful of submissions to be displayed in three places

around the Douro bend and Queen Street West noise wall. The wall is part of GO Transit’s Georgetown South Project, and is meant to mitigate noise from passing GO trains. “To be able to go from some anonymous wide-eyed artist to being able to leave my mark here is really exciting,” Chan said. The art will be a series of tile mosaic murals that will mirror the landscape directly behind it. The tiles, made of glass, will transform the Liberty Village and Queen Street West neighbourhood into “brightly coloured, pixelated patterns” that will give an effect of a glitch in technology, he said. “We’re creating awareness of the digital filter of our perception, but we’re documenting it in a way that we view the world right now and that’s important because that’s going to change,” Chan explained. “It will exist as a digital record of 2014; as the neighbourhood changes this will no longer line up with the back-

ground and that becomes another kind of glitch.” The mosaics will work as a kind of optical illusion that will shift and change as people get closer or farther away from the mural.

It’s a real struggle to inject discourse, concept and dialogue into public art projects.

‘Tactile interactive thing’ “It’s kind of a tactile interactive thing that people can figure out on their own by interacting normally with it. You don’t push buttons, you don’t tweet at it, you just walk,” Chan said. The concept was inspired by how society’s connection and near dependence on technology has framed our perception of the world around us. According to Chan, we’re constantly viewing it with a technological filter, which can be a phone or tablet. He added he’s not here to comment on whether it’s a positive or a negative for society. “What we (Studio F Minus) want to do is always make sure we’re aware of it (the technological filter) and draw attention to it,” he said.

Photo/COURTESY

A mural designed by public art and design firm Studio F-Minus will be displayed on the noise barrier at Queen and Sudbury streets. Two other similar mosaics will be created at the site as well, to be called ‘Dot_JPG’.

The art submission was well received by the jury, who on the Go Transit website said the concept “pushes the definition and expectation of street art in Toronto, mixing contemporary and traditional techniques and materials to create three vibrant murals that are as instantly pleasing as they are rich with deeper artistic meaning…The jury feels these visually arresting wall treatments will be thought

provoking and pleasing for years to come, reflecting the complexity and creativity of the community.” The concept was first brought to the community in November during a consultation night. According to Chan, the community liked it enough and they made some changes from their comments. “If there’s any neighbourhood where you’re going to pitch a conceptual public art

– Mitchell Chan

piece this is it,” the former Parkdale resident said. “You have a very sophisticated audience here, an audience that’s been living with art for a long time.” He said the submission is a bit conceptual and doesn’t fall in line with the majority of public art splashed around the city that serves as “eye candy”, he said. Chan said he hopes the approval of his art project will encourage more conceptual art to be showcased through the city’s StreetARToronto program. “It’s a real struggle to inject discourse, concept and dialogue into public art projects,” he said. “So to start making headway on that it’s really exciting.”

Construction of the mural is slated to begin in the spring.

Mill St. Brewery co-founder re-opens Parkdale brew pub HILARY CATON hcaton@insidetoronto.com Michael Duggan is no stranger to brewing beer. He is the cofounder of Mill St. Brewery, established in 2002, and has been crafting beer for more than 30 years. “Brewing craft beer is a mix of art and science,” he said. “That’s how I like to think of it.” According to Duggan he’s come full-circle because he started off brewing beer in his basement in the 80s and, in some respect, is doing the same at his newest brew pub in Parkdale. His previous location at Richmond and Victoria closed its doors in 2011, but this past summer it moved into its new location and had been running on a “pop-up” basis. Hi s n e w e s t v e n t u re, Duggan’s Brewery Parkdale, located at the corner of Queen Street and Brock Avenue in Parkdale, had its official grand opening Dec. 4. and launched to a packed house

of craft beer enthusiasts. “It’s a great neighbourhood,” Duggan said. “It’s in transition. It’ll be interesting to see how we shape the neighbourhood and how the neighbourhood shapes us in the end.” Duggan added he chose Parkdale not only for the location, but the fact that local businesses have been serving their beer for years with bars like Parts & Labour and Small Food Town Co carrying it on tap. The new space has two floors: the main floor where patrons can grab a pint of the popular No 9 IPA and dig into some wings, tacos or grilled veggies, and the basement where in large silver vats the beer is stored. “The brewing process is done behind the bar,” Duggan

Eric Snidal, sous-chef at Duggan’s Brewery Parkdale, with owner Michael Duggan in the basement of the pub, located at the corner of Queen Street West and Brock Avenue.

explained. “Then we pump it downstairs for aging and fermenting and they get pumped back up through the taps or is brought upstairs in bottles and kegs.” Duggan can brew anything from a pale ale to a malt liquor from one compact station behind the bar, taking anywhere from two weeks to

six months to complete from brewing to tasting. According to Duggan there are 15 fermenters each holding 500 litres in the basement. He said the plan is to have 12 to 14 different beers on tap at any given time in order to offer a selection, including the Parkdale Bomber, a blonde lager or malt liquor depending on where you’re

from, with 7 per cent alcohol. It’s a beer, Duggan likes to call a “winter warmer.” Aside from the name and a signature beer, the brewery has another local connection, its sous-chef, Eric Snidal, is a Parkdalian who lives near Queen Street and Melbourne Avenue. Snidal graduated from George Brown College’s culinary school and in the past he’s worked as a chef at Local Public Eatery in Liberty Village and also at the Yukon near Queen and Sorauren Avenue. At Duggan’s, Snidal assists with the day-to-day operations of the kitchen and helps choose items for the menu. The goal, he said, is to have a hyper local menu consisting of produce, meats and dairy products all from Ontario farms. Snidal jumped at the chance to work with Duggan for a couple of reasons. “First and foremost, location and proximity to my house, you really can’t beat a five-minute walk,” he said.

The second is the opportunity to work with head chef Rene Chauvin, the man who was instrumental in opening the Distillery District, in 2003, by launching three popular restaurants and was a chef at a handful of hotel restaurants including the Four Seasons and the Fairmount Royal York. “I couldn’t have landed in a better spot for so many reasons,” he said. “It’s (Duggan’s) got a cult following with people who know this area.” According to Snidal the Parkdale neighbourhood is “ideal for the Duggan’s formula.” “We get a ton of walk-in traffic,” he said. “…Not only are we hoping to provide the best in Ontario craft beer, but we strive to cultivate an approachable environment where great food and a great social atmosphere come together.”

Let’s all make volunteering our resolution L

et’s make next year a banner year in Toronto for volunteering in the community. With 2015 almost upon us, it seems like a good time to issue this call. There’s still a little bit left in 2014 to ponder goals and expectations for the coming year – and perhaps include some time to give to a cause or organization of importance to you. Also, 2015 is a big year in Toronto. The Pan Am/ Parapan Am Games are coming to the city in July. It’s Canada’s largest multi-sport event. There are opportunities both before and during the Games, which will rely on some 23,000 volunteers to ensure things run smoothly. Visit the Pan Am Games website for more information. And Toronto is a city known for its diverse offerings of festivals and events. The city’s special events office our view regularly lists volunteer opporand is a good place to What can you tunities start for those who can commit do to help your their time to a specific event – as opposed to a more regular community? volunteer experience. But volunteering is not just about what’s good for a cause, an organization or the city. It’s about what’s good for us, too. When it comes to the positive developments that arise from volunteering, it is not merely a ‘one-way’ street. Volunteer opportunities represent more than just a chance to get involved in your community and help out. In many cases, volunteers acquire new skills and contacts during the course of their work. Volunteers acquire intangible benefits, too: a richer experience of life in the city and the satisfaction of knowing your efforts are helping your community. When we think about what kind of environment we want to live in, what improvements we want in our neighbourhoods and what connections we want to forge in our community, volunteering helps in all of those areas. William Osler Health Centre recently honoured seven of its volunteers who had compiled a staggering 50 years each of volunteering with its hospitals, including Etobicoke General. Let’s see what we can do in one year. Calls for volunteering – the ultimate commitment to our community – are all around us. Let’s answer the call – in greater numbers than ever.

Will library saga continue with budget submission? It’s too soon to be able to map out where all the political fights will be in the coming winter’s city hall budget process. But the Toronto Public Library Board has thrown down the gauntlet for the first big one. This shouldn’t be a surprise. There is something about our library system in this city that attracts duelling city councillors like nothing else. Last term, former budget chief Mike Del Grande instigated a minor skirmish when he wondered why so many DVDs and books were circulated in languages other than English. The same term, former budget committee vicechair Doug Ford made headlines by inventing the term lie-berry and disrespecting author Margaret Atwood, as he suggested closing a library in his ward to save some money. That was a Potemkin moment for bibliophiles

david nickle the city across the city to rise up and support their libraries. This time, the membership of the library board (most of whom were appointed under the Ford administration) is setting up for a fight that lands somewhere in between. Reduce security In their 2015 budget submission, they’ve elected to include a 40 per cent reduction in security service in branches across the city. The move would save $660,000 from the budget, bringing its submission down to a two per cent increase over last year. It would mean that in some branches, there would no longer be a security guard present. Library board chair Mike Foderick maintains those branches don’t need a

But it’s hard to imagine very many who send their children to libraries to study or their elderly parents there to read and socialize will be at all comfortable taking a chance on safety.

security guard, given their historic low level of incidents over the past number of years. For instance, at the Centennial Library branch, the security guard worked 27 hours a week in 2013, and over that year dealt with only a single incident. Perhaps there will be some library patrons comforted by that statistic. But it’s hard to imagine very many who send their children to libraries to study or their elderly parents there to read and socialize will be at all com-

fortable taking a chance on safety. The union representing library workers (which doesn’t, incidentally, represent the security guards) has already taken a stand on the issue, as a matter of workplace safety. If I were a betting columnist, I’d say that by the time this works its way through the budget process at city hall – and long before the budget actually makes it to the floor of council – there won’t be any change in the library system’s security complement. One doesn’t know why the library board didn’t save councillors the trouble and just leave matters be. For a service that a majority of Torontonians seem to regard as untouchable, it’s astounding politicians of certain stripes can’t seem to keep their hands off it.

Two local churches serve up annual Christmas feast at community centre >>>from page 1 “Part of our faith-based organization is to take care of those who are in need, so this is one way. It’s a small way but it makes a big difference,” Mangar said. “They say when they come to our dinners that it’s such a complete meal compared to other dinners. They get everything from salad to a main meal to dessert thanks to our volunteers.” The church also had a toy distribution at the end of the evening, which was donated by church members along with RBC Royal Bank and TD Canada Trust Bank. Children received basketballs, board games and Lego sets to take home. The Seventh-day Adventist church, which rents the space at the Parkdale United Church at 171 Dunn Ave., normally hosts its monthly dinners in the church basement. According to Dorzilme, the dinners on average serve about 80 people a month and it’s gotten so large recently that they had to move the holiday dinner to the community centre in order to have more space to accommodate the demand. “I believe this is sending a very strong message about the need of such activities in the community,” the pastor said. “It just motivates us to do more and to get other organizations in the community to get involved too because the need is there.” He added that instead of taking December off, the church wanted to have the holiday dinner for those who won’t be able to attend one of their own with family this year. “We made our own Christmas party for them,” he said. For some, the holiday was a chance to get a much needed free hot meal, but for others like 63-year-old Bruce Smith it was also an opportunity to socialize. “I come as often as I can to talk to people and find out what’s going on in the area, I’ve lived in the area (King and Jameson) for three years,” he said.

Maria, left, and Pratibha getting served their turkey dinners during the 12th annual Christmas Dinner held Monday evening at the Masaryk-Cowan Community Centre.

Smith said he’s glad the church puts on these dinners because they are usually filling, but would like to see it happen more frequently, perhaps twice a month. By the end of the night people were singing Christmas carols and applauding the volunteers and chefs for their efforts Monday night and attendees were encouraged to take food home in a container. “This is our way to help the community and to reach out to people in the community. The church is not only there to preach but to meet a need,” said Dorzilme. “No food will be wasted tonight, we praise God for that.”

Roncesvalles actor stars in Max and Shred on YTV LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com

A

ctor Jean-Michel Le Gal of Orphan Black and Flashpoint fame is starring in a new teen sitcom, Max and Shred, which premiered on Nickelodeon and YTV recently. It’s a departure of sorts for the Roncesvalles Village-based thespian. Max and Shred is Le Gal’s first venture into acting on a kids’ show. Although, he says, it doesn’t feel like a kids’ show. “We spent a lot of time laughing on set,” Le Gal told The Villager. “I thought the writing was really fresh; it just popped off the page. It made me laugh out loud.” Le Gal says he seized the opportunity to work with “super talented kids” who have “such a

fresh perspective” and sense of humour. Max and Shred is the story of an unlikely friendship that forms when an easy-going superstar snowboarder moves in with a neurotic superstar academic and his family. The show focuses on the boys’ evolving relationship as they navigate the trials and tribulations of teenage life, like school, dating and popularity. Le Gal plays Lloyd Ackerman, the family patriarch, although, he’s more childish than everyone else, always wanting to hang out with his kids. Now that Max has moved in, Lloyd can live out his father-son athletic dreams – much to the relief of his son. Le Gal’s nieces and nephews love the show. They tell him it’s

really fun, that it has a lot of heart. “There’s a moral in almost every episode,” said Le Gal, “a life lesson.” Le Gal grew up in Toronto, in the Don Mills area and spent time in Ottawa and England, but landed in Vancouver taking part in a Canadian World Youth exchange program. There, he attended theatre school. He fell in love with acting working on a TV show as a kid. “As an adult doing theatre, I got the opportunity to really sink my teeth into it,” he said. Le Gal says he’d love the chance to work with such actors as Daniel Day Lewis and Johnny Depp, although there are “fantastic people” in Canada like Sarah Polley, with whom he worked

with on the film Take this Waltz. He describes Polley as charismatic and creative. After graduating from Studio 58 in Vancouver, Le Gal went on to join the Birmingham Conservatory of Classical Theatre Training at the Stratford Festival. He performed in such works as The Tempest, As You Like It, Merchant of Venice and Noises Off, earning him a John Hirsch Award for Most Promising Actor.

Trillium funding will help create first organization of its kind in Toronto >>>from page 1 one-third local stakeholders or experts in the relevant field. The community would be in control of how the land is used, and aims to meet its current and future needs. It would also separate the land value from the housing price, which would result in affordable rent prices in the long term should it choose to use the land for that purpose. Other options include open space or garden, a community planning space or a local serving business. How the land will be used depends on the neighbourhood’s needs through community consultation. According to Josefowicz, this grant gets Parkdale that much closer to having a community land trust, and the first in Toronto. However, the PNLT still has to raise money to acquire land in the future and that will be pricey as they will have to buy at market price.

The coordinator will work with its five committees – program planning, communications and community engagement, governance, fundraising, and research – and be in charge of a variety of tasks, which include building engagement and help increasing PNLT’s profile in the community, she said. Kuni Kamizaki, who has been fulfilling the role as a research and community economic development coordinator and is a member of Parkdale Activity-Recreation Centre (PARC), plans to work with the new coordinator in 2015. “We will be doing neighbourhood-wide community planning initiatives for the next year so that we can work with different partners to develop a vision for the neighbourhood in the future,” he said. For almost two years he’s been conducting research around community land trust models from different

countries and how those models could be adapted and adjusted to suit Parkdale’s needs. He’s also been working with community partners Parkdale Activity-Recreation Centre PARC, The West End Food Co-Op, Greenest City, Roncesvalles-Macdonell Residents’ Association, Parkdale Community Legal Services, Parkdale Village BIA, West Neighbourhood House and Sistering. By the end of the threeyear grant, Kamizaki hopes the board of directors will not only have its current stakeholder members on board, but also community members. “We’d like to see our basic organizational structures in place and we’re hoping to have transitioned to a more community-based governance model that also has community members on board,” he said.

Fares set for GO Transit, UP Express RAHUL GUPTA

rgupta@insidetoronto.com Metrolinx’s board of directors unanimously approved a fare hike for GO Transit during its quarterly meeting Thursday. The board also agreed to approve proposed fares for the Union Pearson (UP) Express air rail link which begins running in the spring. The move to raise GO fares for 2015 means riders with a Presto card will see an average increase of five per cent, starting in February. Metrolinx CEO Bruce McCuaig justified the increase, the third such hike in the last three years, by pointing to recent service enhancements such as the recent addition of trains for the Milton corridor. “We’re providing more choices, which cost us operating dollars, plus we have other costs going up, and I think people will realize in their day-to-day lives that costs go up and we need to manage them.” Metrolinx board chair Rob Prichard spoke up in defence of UP’s fare structure, introduced Wednesday, which will cost $27.50 for a one-way trip between Union Station and Pearson International

Airport ($19 for Presto users). He compared the cost of the premium rail service to other similar services in the world. As part of the UP fares decision, airport employees will pay $10 if they use the service, and will have the option to buy a monthly pass for $300, which Prichard said would work out to $6.50 a ride if a federal tax credit for transit passes is applied. “Given the fare after the tax credit is added is about the same as for all GO riders on all corridors, this seems principled and fair,” said Prichard. Prichard said UP isn’t only meant for business travellers or visitors to Toronto, in contrast to McCuaig’s

Merry Christmas & Happy Holidays!

remarks on Wednesday when he described the service as “an extension of the flight experience” and not meant for daily commuters. “We think UP gives an additional option, a good option, for an enhanced price that’s consistent with what other passengers pay,” said Prichard following the board meeting. Planning is underway to integrate TTC and GO fares with UP’s to prevent double-charging, but McCuaig admitted having such an option in place before the planned spring 2015 launch is unlikely. Airport employee Joyce Nakanishi, a flight attendant with nearly 20 years experience, said even with the discounted rate she didn’t feel like she or her colleagues will be able to afford UP. Nakanishi said it takes her 90 minutes currently to get to Pearson, and welcomed a much shorter commute in the form of UP, which Metrolinx promises will take less than 30 minutes to travel from Union Station to the airport . “But $10 a fare is still high,” said Nakanishi who was speaking on behalf of the Toronto Airport Council of Unions.

MIKE ADLER madler@insidetoronto.com Job One for John Tory – hiring consultants to start planning SmartTrack – turned into an odd test of how much council will co-operate with Toronto’s new mayor. City councillors last Thursday gave their support to this first step toward Tory’s campaign promise for a surface commuter rail loop. But some gave very grudging support, often coupled with dark predictions about the project’s financing or pleas for other transit projects. The day’s discussion was as good a gauge as any of how much help or hindrance Tory, a newcomer to the council he leads, can expect from its members over four years. Denzil Minnan-Wong, Tory’s chief deputy, argued Tory won the fall election, and was following through on his promise. Council must approve studies worth up to $750,000 for the 22-station rail line “given what people said on Oct. 27,” and because the public, above all, wants transit projects to be speedily built, he said. “Isn’t that what the last election was all about?” Councillors didn’t disagree,

but many argued other projects should be studied at the same time SmartTrack. Rob Ford, an Etobicoke councillor, who as mayor always insisted he had been given a mandate to build subways in 2010, disputed Tory’s mandate to pursue SmartTrack. This year’s election was actually run on many issues, and was “not a referendum on transit,” said Ford, arguing some people who voted for Tory didn’t do so because of SmartTrack. “When it comes to transit, it was a very, very divided crowd no matter where we went,” said the former mayor, who warned his colleagues the issue of their support for SmartTrack – and other projects with “fancy streetcars” instead of subways – would be revisited for the entire term. “You can’t run and hide and say, ‘I only asked for a report,’” Ford said. Council approved having the city and TTC work with the University of Toronto on transit modelling for SmartTrack on GO lines the province plans to electrify and Strategic Regional Research Associates, a firm with detailed data on office leases, on development possibilities along the route.
