Peter Harris looks at what’s rarely noticed HILARY CATON hcaton@insidetoronto.com Parkdale artist Peter D. Harris doesn’t paint the obvious or the traditional. He prefers the overlooked, but relatable, when it comes to art. “It’s the kind of thing you’d come across on a day to day basis and you would look at it a thousand times and never notice it,” Harris explained. “It seems obvious to take a picture of a beautiful mountain and make a beautiful painting but I like to take something many people might say is kind of ugly or banal and make it aesthetically interesting.” It’s for that reason he prefers capturing the essence of the urban landscapes, over traditional scenes. “There’s a certain beauty in the urban environment and I like to share that. I find the urban situation interesting for me…it’s a challenge I like to give myself.” Harris, a 40-year-old resident at the Artscape Lofts at Queen and Abell streets, has been capturing the urban landscape of Toronto for the past decade. He’s done a handful of series that depict the urbanization of Toronto, from gas stations to restaurants and one of his latest surrounding streetcars. “For me the Toronto streetcars are such an iconic image of the city and when you see those it really just represents what Toronto is,” he said. The common feature throughout each of his oil on canvas paintings is the backdrop, it’s mostly shown with the night as a backdrop. This is purposefully done in order to illuminate certain features of the

landscape, he said. It’s a way to draw the audience’s attention to certain aspects that, as an artist, Harris feels are worth noticing. “It makes the city almost like a theatre stage is how I see it,” he said. “It’s a device that I use to make the viewer notice different parts of the city that I would really like them to focus on. The streetcar for example, when it’s done at night I can really show the interior of the streetcar sort of the glowing light and it really gives it a lovely effect.” Harris’s work is all about the light, he added, and that’s why he paints at night to allow him more flexibility and room to play with the lighting of the scene. He captures the essence of the urban landscape by first taking pictures of a particular scene that has caught his attention at various times of the night over a period of a couple of days and then decides from there which one he’ll paint. One painting takes at least 100 hours to complete, in order to get the desired rich layers and vibrant colours he’s looking for. According to Harris, a lot of the scenes he decides to paint are mainly based on his emotions. “It’s all about how I feel in the space. I want to share that feeling of calmness of solitude that I get in the city especially at night in the early hours,” Harris explained. “So if I can find a scene that captures that feeling and I think I can use the scene to share that (emotion) then I think that makes a good subject for me.”

Photo/COURTESY

Parkdale artist Peter Harris focuses on the overlooked, but relatable, when it comes to his artwork, including the iconic TTC streetcar.

When he first started painting as a child, Harris was painting rural landscapes with his grandmother Doris while growing up in Tillsonburg and London, Ontario. He was just 10 years old when he was exposed to the world of amateur art through Doris, whom he credits for sparking his initial interest in the arts. She was also the one to nurture his talent in “several ways,” he said. “After school we would paint together at the kitchen table working on watercolour landscapes. She was a great teacher and I always enjoyed my time (with her),” said Harris. By the time he was in high school

he was already taking art seriously. He spent a month in Texas with his grandmother when he was 18, where he said he painted every day all day long for the entire month. He said it was his first opportunity to apply himself and see if he could actually be a full time artist, which he is today. “It really cemented my resolve to be an artist and to continue my art studies at university,” he said. He completed a degree in Fine Arts at the University of Waterloo in 1997 and in the years since his series on urban landscapes, gas stations, streetcars and buildings have been shown in art galleries

across Canada and the United States in solo and group exhibitions and has won several awards for his continuing series of urban landscape paintings including an Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation grant and an Ontario Arts Council, Mid Career project grant. His work can also be found in private collections in Canada, the United States and Europe. Years ago, before he discovered his niche, he painted abstract art pieces as well as figurative but he found it very limiting. “I would do a series and I would complete 10-15 paintings and hit a dead end. I wasn’t able to evolve the series any further past the original idea,” he said. “So this is the genre and subject matter that’s keeping my attention the longest. I just see so much to paint and so many avenues to go down. I just see myself evolving with the paintings.” He plans to keep evolving in the genre and doesn’t see himself straying from the urban landscape scene any time soon, as his subject not only still speaks to him but to his audiences in an urbanized city like Toronto too. “I’m still captivated by the landscape, I’m still finding interesting things to create art about by using the urban landscape,” he said. “My work has gone through many changes in the last 10 years, and I see myself continuing to evolve and grow in the future as I challenge myself to create new works about the urban landscape.”

egardless of your beliefs, Christmas is a time best spent with those you love. In our hurried world, where time is precious, sitting back with those most dear to you is a way to recharge and focus on what’s important. This connection extends beyond your immediate family; it impacts everyone around you: extended family, neighbours, the entire community. More people seem to have smiles on their faces, wishing each other ‘Happy Holidays’ as they make their way through bustling malls, busy streets and crowded grocery stores. With so much cheer in the air, our view let’s try to extend that spirit of goodwill well beyond the holi– why not make every day Mingle with days a day to keep happiness alive. And there are a plethora of your fellow ways to do that, whether it’s Torontonians helping a neighbour shovel the snow, visiting family, calling a friend you haven’t spoken to in a while, or heading out and spending time with your fellow Torontonians. There are so many activities, programs and attractions to enjoy over the holidays. Why not go for a skate at one of the city’s indoor or outdoor rinks? Visit one of the city’s farms or zoos – yes, Riverdale Farm and both the High Park and Toronto zoos are open during the winter months. You can also check out the many historic sites – Colborne Lodge, Montgomery’s Inn, or the Scarborough Museum to name a few. And for the more adventurous among us, why not enjoy one of Toronto’s many trails, including The Shared Path along the Humber River? And while you’re out there, take in a new part of town. The city is filled with amazing places to walk, great local shops to drop in to, and amazing food experiences from all around the world. This holiday season, why not take in everything the City of Toronto has to offer – whether it’s with friends or even if you’re looking for some alone time. Check out our calendar online at www.insidetoronto.com for holiday events happening now to the New Year.

Toronto forced to face some truths in 2014 Trying to parse the meaning of 2014 is only slightly less challenging than summarizing a Thomas Pynchon novel. But if not now, then when? So let me take a stab at it. 2014 was the year Toronto realized it was not, in fact, a city. It was not, at least, the kind of city we have always thought that we were and the place we hoped we might remain: an idealized place where ethnic and economic divisions are not obstacles to consensus and harmony. We always knew this vision of Toronto might be a mirage. But in 2014, we stepped through the illusion and were faced with the undeniable evidence: on Oct. 27, only John Tory was able to exceed the support that remained with the Ford family – mayor Rob Ford and his brother Doug. That Torontonians would

david nickle the city elect Rob Ford mayor in 2010 might have been excused as a blip. Voters either did not know or could not believe how unsuited Rob Ford was for the city’s top job, and were likewise ignorant or incredulous of the fact that the picture Ford painted of the city’s problems and the solutions to those problems had so little to do with reality. But when four years later, with all of that amply and painfully demonstrated, so many – about a third of those who voted – cast their vote with Doug Ford, there was no denying it. Toronto’s old idea of itself as a city no longer applies. Of course, that’s not to say we underwent dramatic change over 2014. Toronto’s “elite” as the Fords describe them have

always been too enamoured of the shiny cultural artifacts of downtown, and always judged the city as to how well those artifacts shone against those of other bigger, more famous cities around the world. And the elites have always smugly boasted about Toronto’s multicultural cred – all those cultures celebrated, all those languages spoken. It’s been tougher for the elites to recognize that many of the people bringing those cultures and speaking those languages have gone to live in parts of the city that have been allowed to deteriorate, and since amalgamation in 1998 been farther from the decision-making centre of Toronto than ever before. The vote for the Fords came from many in those communities – despite the fact that the Fords offered nothing tangible there other than to articulate

affection and camaraderie. That vote sustained over unprecedented scandal, in spite of lies against a backdrop of the illegal drug trade that is one of the most genuinely corrosive elements a city can face. And that is what we’ve learned, more than anything, in 2014: the nature of our long, chronic injury. In 2015, here’s hoping we can learn how to heal it.

It was a Winter Solstice Celebration dinner a week in the making. Parkdale Activity-Recreation Centre (PARC) chef Alain Levesque was dicing potatoes, carrots and preparing stuffing a week in advance of the holiday dinner held Friday, Dec. 19. “We’re expecting 150 people tonight,” Levesque told The Villager, as he put the final touches on the holiday meal. “We’ve been prepping since last week with only a couple of volunteers.” Close to 200 people passed through the drop-in centre at 1499 Queen St. W., wishing each other a Merry Christmas and happy holidays as they sat down and enjoyed a meal together. slated for Christmas day. “We serve a lot of people who don’t get to have big festival meals in a social setting,” Levesque said. “It’s not just helping with social isolation, but they deserve to feel special too.” PARC, which helps members of the community with issues of poverty and mental health with a social supports through a variety of programs and activities, has been cooking up solstice meals for more than two decades, according to PARC manager Bob Rose. And it all started with the thought, “I wonder what would happen if we were open all night?” Sure enough, PARC employees explored the option on the winter solstice, with an endless list of activities planned. “There would be a chess tournament at 1 a.m., bingo games at 3 a.m., hors d’oeuvres were served at 4 a.m.,” said Rose. “It was just an all-night

party.” There hasn’t been another all-nighter since, but celebrating the solstice has lived on. Friday’s festivities were a 12-hour affair, as activities were planned throughout the day from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Dinner was served at 5 p.m.; on the menu was roasted turkey, glazed carrots with peas and fresh mint, mashed potatoes with parsley and chives topped with gravy made with thyme and rosemary, with a side dish of stuffing mixed with bacon and onions. As dinner was served, the Jolly Roger PARC band got people in the festive spirit. The drop-in centre was filled with community members – there wasn’t an empty chair. Parkdale resident Kevin Cross, who stops by the dropin centre occasionally, chose a spot to stand near the back in order to get a good view of the band. “This is a complete meal.

I’ve got no complaints,” he said, as he dug into his mashed potatoes smothered in gravy. “There’s so much love and togetherness here, they always come together not just around Christmas time.” A sense of family and community could be felt between patrons and volunteers all evening as even some PARC employees came to visit. Executive director Victor Willis popped by and was overwhelmed by the turnout and joy in the room. “What’s lovely about this event is that it brings people together in a variety of ways. It’s not specifically a Christmas dinner, it’s solstice. So whether you celebrate Christmas or not, everyone just feels welcome,” Willis said. “We have people disconnected from their family and this is a way to bring people together in a safe way. It’s always beautiful to see, people are always so thankful.”

Beary Merry Christmas

CAMH’s Gifts of Light bring holiday joy HILARY CATON hcaton@insidetoronto.com

Photo/PETER C. MCCUSKER

Metroland Media Toronto’s Monica Augustyniak, left, and Shari Sacco bring some holiday toys and joy to Rosanna Scopacasa and Alexandra Robayo at St. Joseph’s Health Centre as part of Metroland’s Beary Merry Christmas campaign.

There hasn’t been a time in the seven years since the Centre of Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) Foundation started its Gifts of Light campaign that it hasn’t touched the lives of its inpatients. “Hearing patients and clients say ‘Really, I can keep this?’ or ‘Really, someone out there just donated so I can have this?’ there’s this feeling of being thought about and remembered; it is really important,” said Amy Wilkinson, the director of community giving at CAMH. “I can’t sum it up into words...” The Gifts of Light campaign encourages the community to purchase presents for CAMH patients during the holidays. Launched in 2008, organizers handed out 600 gifts to its patients that year. Since then, the campaign

has grown exponentially and this year its volunteers are gearing up to distribute 2,800 gifts to CAMH patients until Christmas Day. “It’s grown because it’s been so embraced by the community,” Wilkinson said. Donors can choose from one of five categories: patient care; health and fun; education and career; research; and matched gifts. A few of the new items this year include scholarships, new clothes, a blanket and teddy bear, tickets to a show, a manicure, community gardening tools and a first steps backpack to help patients transition back into the community. Once purchased, donors can give an item on behalf of a family member or friend in lieu of a traditional gift and receive a card that states the gift has been given to a patient in their honour. “A lot of patients are underhoused or under-employed so for them these are really luxury items sometimes,”

A lot of patients are under-housed or underemployed so for them these are really luxury items sometimes. – Amy Wilkinson

she said. “On top of it, this may be, for some people, the only gift they get.” For someone living with mental illness, the holidays can be tough, said Wilkinson. Because CAMH is the only GTA hospital without a gift shop and with the stigma around mental illnesses and addiction, many patients often don’t receive visits or gifts from family members or loved ones. According to Wilkinson, many feel a sense of hopelessness, loneliness and even depression; the campaign reminds them they’re not alone. “I remember one of the parties I went to in the

Join Canada’s #1 Fitness Club!

women’s inpatient unit,” Wilkinson recalled. “One woman said, ‘Do you mind if I take this back to my room? I don’t want people to see me cry when I open it.’ That’s how much their gifts touch our patients.” Although the Gifts of Light campaign ramps up around the holidays, it does offer gifts year-round through its Gifts for Comfort Fund. Wilkinson has been working at CAMH for almost four years and said seeing the happy looks on patients’ faces never gets old. She said it helps put in perspective many of the things we often take for granted. “I think a lot of these people may not have a huge support network, many do, but for those that don’t, that little touch of human kindness goes tremendously far.” Gifts of Light can be purchased by phone at 416-9796909 or online at www.camhgiftsoflight

Watson family brings Project Hope to St. Joe’s Project Hope is an annual tradition for Jane Watson and her family. Watson, her husband and two daughters, along with many of their relatives visit St. Joseph’s Health Centre every year on Christmas Eve to bring comfort and hope to patients stuck in the hospital over the holidays. Watson created Project Hope 11 years ago in honour of the couple’s infant son, who was rushed to the emer-

gency department at St. Joe’s and passed away. “St. Joe’s was such an incredible support when we needed it most,” said Watson in a statement. “I feel so fortunate to be able to come back each Christmas Eve at a time that can be so lonely in hospital and spend a few minutes with each patient.” The Watson family spends the morning of Christmas Eve visiting nearly 300

patients at the health centre, taking a few moments to speak with each individual and give them a small gift. This small gesture and act of kindness brings smiles, joy and even tears to patients and staff alike, who are all deeply touched by the Watson family’s presence and generosity. “It’s a wonderful feeling to be able to do this for others and it’s what brings us back every year.

“It’s a special and integral part of our family’s Christmas,” Watson said. “It’s our way of giving back and showing our appreciation for St. Joe’s.” This year, they’ll be visiting the Neonatal Intensive Care and Medicine Inpatient units. Project Hope has touched the lives of more than 3,000 patients and staff at St. Joe’s over the years.

from individual donations. “We’re happy with what we’ve raised so far,” said Kaleigh Wisman, the community relations coordinator at West Neighbourhood House. “We use the money wherever we need it most throughout the year. The donations we receive, as a result of our annual appeal and ongoing donations throughout the year, help

to keep programs going strong in our community and supplement programs where needed.” In order to help its programs conWisman said she hopes this year tinue to flourish and provide a varithey’ll be able to go above and ety of supports to the community, beyond their goal as the money helps maintain programs provided the West Neighbourhood House is looking to collect $38,000 before Jan. at its various sites across the city 1 for its year-end fundraiser. that are needed in the community, So far, it’s raised close to $12,000 she said. West Neighbourhood House, formerly St. Christopher House, is a social service agency with seven locations around the city’s west end, its largest at 248 Ossington Ave., and has been helping the community for more than a century. “When you’re donating to West Neighbourhood House, you’re supUP porting a local community,” Wisman TO said. “We really try to respond to the needs of our community and try to develop programming and supports to really improve the lives of people living in our neighbourhood, especially for people living in the west end.” In the past the funds raised AY helped keep the after-school proBOXING D gram at Holy Family Catholic School in Parkdale running, and this year FRI DEC 26 6-8AM! is no different. enroll. “It fills up really, really quickly. When a child is connected with us from last year, they usually make sure they’re registered with us for the following year, too,” she said. “It’s a high-density area. There are a lot of children in Parkdale and there are a lot of newcomer families as well, so obviously a program that is available for them inside the school for free is definitely in high demand.” The program encourages healthy child development through daily activities that foster growth of all developmental areas, a healthy snack and physical activity component as well. According to Raposo, the homework help is an aspect of the program the kids really seem to benefit from and appreciate. “For a lot of the children, their families may not be very familiar with the school system in Canada,” Raposo said. “It’s a new experience for them and English may also be a second language for them.”

Although the program receives “generous donations” from RBC Bank and the province, it’s the individual donations that help create innovation, Raposo said. It could be in the form of hiring additional staff to help a child with special needs, implementing an enriched program or additional summer programming. “It allows us to have that flexibility to explore future options and enrich the existing project,” she said. It also helps pay for payroll staff, maintenance and the volunteer recruiting department. This year’s donations will also help sustain a new after-school program at Queen Victoria Public School. In addition to the after-school program the fundraiser also helps develop public policy, a support system for women suffering from abuse, home care for seniors through Personal Support Workers (PSWs), and the Jobs Corps program.
