New development, an increase in housing prices and gentrification are just a few reasons why the Roncesvalles-Macdonnell Residents Association (RMRA) executive committee has decided to embark on starting a community-led planning study. “Roncesvalles is clearly in a transition stage as a neighbourhood. It’s becoming a desirable neighbourhood, more people are coming in,” RMRA chair Brian Torry told The Villager. “We’re starting to change from a sleepy single-family

neighbourhood to a more mixed neighbourhood. But there comes a point when you got to start thinking about it (the study) and we’re there.” Torry and the executive committee are in the early stages of creating this study in order to help give the community a unified voice when it comes to future planning in the neighbourhood. The importance of launching this study has become more prevalent in recent years, according to Torry, who has lived in the Roncesvalles area for about a decade and has seen the changes first hand. >>>CITY, page 6

Parliament needs to accept the Supreme Court of Canada’s decision to overturn the ban on doctor-assisted suicide and promptly begin a Canada-wide discussion about how to implement a new law, a local federal politician said. “This can be an issue people can be quite emotional about,” Parkdale-High Park MP Peggy Nash told The Villager following Canada’s highest court’s decision today to reverse the 21-year-old law. “The government needs to comply with the
decision and take immediate steps to have a national discussion on next steps.” The Supreme Court struck down the Criminal Code provision that was originally put in place more than two decades ago to protect those suffering from “grievous and irremediable medical conditions.” The government has a year to change legislation, said Nash, who admitted she hadn’t read the entire judgement. If Parliament does not create a new law within 12 months, the decision permits physicianassisted suicides, albeit with >>>BAYCREST, page 12

Actor Gord Rand takes roles that scare him hilary caton hcaton@insidetoronto.com
W
hen it comes to choosing the right play and the right role, TrinityBellwoods area actor Gord Rand goes for the ones that scare him the most. “I look for it,” he admitted. “I ask myself, is this something that frightens me to do on stage? Is this going to reveal something in me I’m not sure if I want to reveal and, if so, why don’t I want to reveal it?” It’s all about artistic growth in his work and Rand has been fortunate enough to be selective. Lately he’s been gravitating toward works he said some people might classify as dark, but he doesn’t see it that way. “I see it as plays that investigate difficult questions about life and behaviour,” explained the Dundas Street West and Ossington Avenue resident. “Sometimes it results in funny plays, sometimes it results in tragic plays.” This February Rand’s fear and
interest in difficult topics led him to Tarragon Theatre’s production of Brandung (Abyss), written and translated by Tarragon’s first international playwright-inresidence Maria Milisavljevic. He snagged the lead role of Vlado, a Serbian immigrant living in Germany who has to face the trauma he’s experienced in the past head-on. The play is a thriller set in Germany about a missing 24-year-old woman, Karla Ritcher. Rand plays her lover Vlado who finds himself wrapped up in the investigation. “My character is a guy who comes to terms with his horrific past through this investigation. People don’t trust him, there’s a lot of racism against Serbians in Germany. He becomes a suspect,” Rand told The Villager. A love triangle also blossoms after Ritcher’s disappearance between Vlado and his girlfriend’s roommate, who also happens to be her sister. “This is a love story, really there’s so much love it’s not quite sure where to go,” Rand said.
Photo/COURTESY
Trinity-Bellwoods area actor Gord Rand plays Vlado in Maria Milisavljevic’s play ‘Abyss’, on stage at Tarragon Theatre, Feb. 11 to March 15.
“The play is also about how she and he come to acknowledge their feelings for each other and find themselves in a world they weren’t quite planning for.”
Rand, who graduated from the University of Toronto’s theatre program, pursues acting full-time but was first exposed to theatre at 10 years old and even worked at the Shaw Festival box office as a teen. He said what draws him to the characters he plays is their trauma and how it affects people. That curiosity has led him to a variety of plays in the past 20 years, including the Tarragon’s Wide Awake Hearts; Shaw Festival’s The Philandere; and Mirvish’s The Innocent Eye Test, which won a Dora Award and many more. When he’s not acting, Rand is exploring that human trauma through documentary film as well. “I’m currently making a doc about a close friend who has PTSD, that’s the real life touch stone that I have. He’s a veteran of the Canadian Forces and I’m interested in how that affects one emotionally and how one reacts to real life difficulties and how your perception changes after going through something like
that,” Rand explained. He’s been working on the documentary for more than a year and the hope is to have the film done and ready for film festivals. “This is a movie about a guy who’s fought in wars nobody has talked about for the last 20 years,” he said. “The insane thing about it was seeing my buddy become this guy who he was proud of but at the same time there’s this darkness to him. My heart goes out to him.” But for now his main focus is Abyss, a play that’s been in the works for the past two years. According to Rand it’s been a labour of love and is “a play to get lost in.” “They’ll be entertained and be in for a good story that moves fast and is dark, mysterious and sexy,” Rand said. Abyss runs from Feb. 11 to March 15 at the Tarragon Theatre’s Extraspace, 30 Bridgman Ave.

Focus on legacy of Pan Am Games
Write us
H
ow can Toronto optimize the legacy of the upcoming Pan Am Games? What opportunities are there to create lasting change in our communities as a result of hosting the 2015 Pan Am/Parapan Am Games this summer? In this space last week, we wrote of how the Pan Am Path, an 84-kilometre trail being built to connect communities across the Toronto region, could create a living legacy for the city. It’s not the only example. Consider the facility construction and renovation that have taken place in Toronto because of the Games: The CIBC Pan Am Park located along the shores of Lake Ontario, including Exhibition Place, Ontario Place and the West Channel. The Pan Am / Parapan Am Fields at the University of Toronto’s St. George campus. The renovated Etobicoke Olympium. The track and field facility at York University in North York. The Aquatics Centre at the University of Toronto’s Scarborough campus. We can make use of those our view facilities in terms of promoting physical activity and Take advantage enabling community particiin local events. There of all the Games pation are significant opportunities offers to Toronto to impact the lives of many Torontonians. Consider that there’s an entire neighbourhood – the Canary District – in the West Don Lands being constructed that will serve as a temporary home for athletes this summer. Following the Games, that neighbourhood must integrate into the surrounding community and the city as a whole. How that transpires can serve as an example for other neighbourhoods when they experience a major development. And it’s not just bricks and mortar examples. There are opportunities for local businesses. There’s the opportunity to learn more about another culture being represented at the Games. There’s the volunteer experience. This isn’t about whether having the Games in Toronto is a good idea or not. We’re past that point. This is about making use of what the city will have after the Games and building the best possible legacy. There is potential to enable positive change on a grand scale. Learn more about the Games. Learn more about the facilities and parks being built. Understand how you as a resident of Toronto can take full advantage of Games facilities to create a better lifestyle once the Games are done. Anything less would simply be a wasted opportunity.

Will residents sign blank cheque for Scarborough subway? Predictably, Toronto council didn’t want to trouble itself this week with more questions about the Scarborough subway plan. Councillor Josh Matlow dared them to do otherwise – submitting five fairly uncomfortable administrative inquiries poking holes in council’s plans to hike taxes and build an expensive three-stop subway along a route that had been slated for a fully funded seven-stop light rail line. Questions asked, questions answered, Toronto council decided, voting overwhelmingly to approve a motion from Deputy Mayor Glenn De Baeremaeker to receive the inquiries and not send them along to Mayor John Tory’s Executive Committee. The questions were answered by City Manager Joe Pennachetti as the rules require. Given those answers, one might have thought councillors would be interested in a little more talk. Matlow wondered
david nickle the city about the sunk costs the city will be responsible for paying on the cancellation of the light rail line. Pennachetti said he’d report later, although leaked documents indicate it sits at $75 million. In 2013, they were estimated at $10 million more. What will the new subway cost to run, now? Pennachetti said $30 to $40 million a year for capital maintenance. It’s not known how much it will cost to run; it will depend on the service levels that council approves. How much help the city will get for operating it is an open question. What of SmartTrack and its impact on ridership of the subway? All of that will be factored into further studies emerging as the Scarborough subway environmental assessment unfolds, and the SmartTrack
preliminary work proceeds. And what is that ridership? In 2006, the city estimated 9,500 people per hour. In 2013, the ridership was estimated at 14,000. Pennachetti explained the new results came in a rush based on other variables. In the end, only six councillors thought those questions required more study. De Baeremaeker, with the blessing of Tory, carried the day and the whole matter is shelved. After the vote, De Baeremaeker pointed out that many of the questions Matlow posed had been answered in 2013 when council made the leap from light rail to subway. And he accused Matlow of simply using those questions as a back door to reopen the matter and build light rail rather than subways in Scarborough. Well, of course he is. Matlow opposed the subway for those reasons in 2013, and he’s opposing it again now. Things change.
Among other things, De Baeremaeker is proposing another $150 million for a fourth station on the line. In a scrum after the vote, De Baeremaeker wouldn’t rule out supporting an even longer route, for billions more, if the environmental assessment said it was a good idea. Matlow is not the only one uncomfortable with this. Deputy Mayor Denzil Minnan-Wong voted against the subway in 2013 and still thinks there are problems. But that’s not the same thing as wanting to reopen the matter. The public wants to get on with things is the mantra; no one wants more debate. There is one more question though: are Torontonians tired enough of debate to sign a blank cheque for a transit plan that’s looking more and more like a bad fit? Guess we’ll find out.

Another national competition for Chef Hayden Johnston
parkdalevillager.com
Former winner of Chopped Canada one of 10 finalists in Young Chef competition LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com Just 25 years old, chef Hayden Johnston’s cooking career has already taken him all over the world. Inspired by his father’s home-style cooking growing up in Thunder Bay, Johnston graduated from the Culinary Institute of Canada in Prince Edward Island. He cooked for a summer in Italy before returning to Canada to work in the kitchen at Treadwell Farm to Table Cuisine in Niagara-onthe-Lake followed by a stint cooking on a cruise ship that took him to South America and Antarctica. Currently a chef de cuisine at Richmond Station, at Yonge Street and Richmond Avenue, Johnston was named a semifinalist in the S. Pellegrino Young Chef 2015 competition to find the best young chefs ages 30 and under from around
the world. “It feels good,” said Johnston of the recognition. “It’s fun. I’m happy to be a part of it.” The Dundas Street West and Sorauren Avenue-area resident discovered the competition through an ad on Facebook and filled out an application online in early December. Twenty regions representing the brand’s key markets, which include Canada, participated in the global talent search. Canada’s winner was declared Monday, and it was British Columbia chef Paul Moran. He will compete against 19 young chefs from around the world at the Milan Expo 2015 at the end of June. S. Pellegrino received more than 3,000 submissions from young chefs in countries, including China, Serbia, South Korea, New Zealand and Japan. From those submissions,

ALMA (a leading international educational training centre for Italian cuisine) selected 200 semifinalists. Johnston was one of the 10 Canadian chefs. The competition was open to participants no older than 30 who have at least one year’s experience working as a professional in a restaurant as a chef, sous chef or chef de partie. Leading local chefs Susur Lee, Cory Vitiello and Matty
Matheson mentored and evaluated the semifinalists at Monday’s judging event at Malaparte in Toronto. Applicants were required to submit a recipe for a signature dish to FineDiningLovers.com, the online magazine for food enthusiasts endorsed by S. Pellegrino and Acqua Panna. Johnston’s was Duo of Duck – Salt Baked Breast and Braised and Glazed Leg. It’s a dish that uses accessible, Canadian ingredients, he told The Villager. “We’re a country of lakes. Duck is a common ingredient. It uses local mushrooms, celery and potatoes,” Johnston said. “It’s an ingredient-focused, technique-driven dish.” Semifinalists were chosen according to the competition’s five ‘golden rules’ – ingredients, skills, genius, beauty and message.
pets Pets and people
“It was a very hard task to select just so few finalists from so many interesting proposals,” said Andrea Sinigaglia, ALMA general manager, in a statement. “Having the opportunity to analyze original recipes created by young chefs from all over the world was a thrilling experience, and an incredible demonstration of just how much talent and love for fine food it is possible to find everywhere in the globe.” Competition is nothing new for Johnston. He was a winner of the Food Network’s Chopped Canada last year. He took home the show’s $10,000 grand prize. “I went in there with a good game plan. My girlfriend and I watched all of the American episodes,” he said. “I think I was better prepared.”

City of Toronto to be included in study >>>from page 1 “When I moved here 10 or 12 years ago there were a lot of mom-and-pop shops and a lot of Polish shops and a lot of that is starting to disappear,” he said, adding a change is also happening in the residential sector. So far, according to Torry, meetings are being arranged to gather input from residents; he’s also open to involving planning students from local universities. He a d d e d t h e R M R A plans to include the City of Toronto in the study and has already reached out to some staff members in the traffic department to begin a traffic study of the area, which Torry believes is “an important aspect for planning for the community.” “Obviously we need the city to be involved, we can’t do it on our own and I don’t think our results would be particularly valid if we did it on our own,” he said, adding the RMRA plans to meet with local councillor Gord Perks ( Ward 14 ParkdaleHigh Park), who’s on board to help. “We’re circling around what is it that needs to be studied and what’s the right kind of process that needs to be done,” Perks said. “There are questions both around planning and traffic and we need to wrestle around with what’s the most productive way to get to those questions.” According to Perks, these

processes can take more than a year to complete depending on what aspects the study plans to focus on, particularly a neighbourhood traffic study, which Perks said can be “very controversial and very difficult.” “There are city-led processes that will help us find good answers and there are city-led processes that will lead us down a rabbit hole,” he said. “It all depends on the scope and scale of the work we want to do.” Torry said the study will also look at community spaces, green spaces, transit, biking and of course, new development. Types of development According to the RMRA chair, the development portion would focus on identifying what types of development are appropriate for the area and which ones are not. It will also look at where, how and when development fits into the neighbourhood. The area has already seen development pressures begin at Howard Park and Roncesvalles Avenue with the Howard Park residences and the 383 Sorauren Ave.
condo. “Now that we’ve started to identify the types of areas we want to look at we’ll slowly start to put them together. So we’ve started taking some small steps, but the biggest part of it is figuring out how we’re going to do it,” Torry said. This is where the community comes into play. The RMRA is looking to gather as many residents as they can to help with the study, who understand it’s a long term commitment that could last years and are willing to look at the bigger picture for the chance to give the community a voice in what happens in their neighbourhood. “We’re looking for people to helps us, we’re looking for community members that are interested in studying what’s going on and are interested in community planning and development. We’re looking for the community to be more active in big picture planning instead of leaving it to whoever has the file that day,” Torry said. “Communities change over time and we would just like to be able to have the community have a voice and be vigilant about how that change takes place and the direction that change goes. It’s about being proactive instead of reactive and right now we’re only reactive.”

Dive in to your spring cleaning early Warmer temperatures and longer hours of sunlight can work wonders to recharge energy levels. Upon the arrival of spring, homeowners dust off their to-do lists and charge ahead with renewed vigour. But before homeowners can get started on renovation projects, many must tame the existing mess that may have built up over the winter. Spring is a great time to dive into spring cleaning projects and ready a home for a season of renovation and remodeling. Getting started on spring cleaning can be a tad overwhelming. In 2012, OnePoll asked 1,000 adults living in the United Kingdom how they felt about
spring cleaning, and 41 per cent of those surveyed found spring cleaning a daunting process while 68 per cent had negative feelings about spring cleaning. But in spite of that initial lack of enthusiasm, respondents said they felt happy and more organized once they finished their spring cleaning. Establishing a plan and setting reachable goals can make spring cleaning a lot less daunting. • Set aside several days for spring cleaning. A long weekend is a great time to do some spring cleaning, as having consecutive days to clean will reduce the chances you might grow distracted. If the weather isn’t
agreeable yet, start indoors and save your outside spring cleaning for warmer temperatures. When the weather does wrm up, you won’t be stuck inside. • Make a list and purchase all of the supplies you will need. Again, this will help you stay on course, rather than going out to the store to pick up cleaners or organizational systems. • Try to set reasonable goals. Even if you hope to clean the entire house, stick to the one or two rooms that are most desperate for your attention. Divide each task into a series of steps so when you complete each step you will feel proud that you’re

making progress. • Create your musical playlist. A playlist full of your favorite songs can provide some inspiration and energy to push you through the spring cleaning when your enthusiasm starts to wane. The music also may take your mind off of the work ahead and help to pass the time. • Start from the top and work downward. Follow a logical cleaning order. Begin by dusting away cobwebs and lighting fixtures. Clean light switches and walls. Empty closets and then restock them in a more organized fashion. Leave the furniture and flooring for last, as dirt and dust may accumu-
late on furniture and flooring as you clean other areas of the home. • Be prepared to bid adieu to some of your stuff. Have a few trash bags at the ready. Reorganize items you won’t be keeping into separate piles, with one pile for items you plan to donate and another for those items you will discard. Donate what you can and promptly put the remainder of the items at the curb for pickup. • Stay fed and hydrated. Cleaning can be physically and emotionally exhausting. Take breaks to fuel up on food and always have a refreshing beverage close by.

New ‘Y’ serving at-risk youth in downtown area Vanauley Street YMCA opened shelter and drop-in centre JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com Having just opened its doors, the Vanauley Street YMCA is already serving a huge need for at-risk youth in the downtown area. The new building, located in the Alexandra Park community, opened its shelter component on Jan. 22 and a drop-in centre on Jan. 26. With the mercury dropping this winter, it is also serving as an Extreme Cold Weather centre specifically for youth aged 16 to 24. The 40-bed shelter, in particular, takes the needs of youth into account more than the former Y shelter in the area, at 485 Queen St., did. “We have double-occupancy rooms and a couple of single-occupancy rooms, and each room has a pri-
vate washroom,” said YMCA youth outreach and intervention general manager Louise Smith. “A high number of homeless youth – about one in five – is a member of the LGBTQ population, and the added washrooms give added privacy to members of the trans community.” She added the private rooms are also beneficial to the population the Vanauley Street Y serves. “These are young people 16 to 24, and teenagers and youth often like to go in their rooms and shut the door,” she said. “When residents leave, their doors are locked, and we’ll have overnight staff here on the (residential) floor in case the youth need anything, including just someone to have a conversation with.” Each room comes

equipped with a care package full of essentials such as soap, shampoo and socks. The building boasts two separate entrances – one for
shelter residents and one for drop-in centre users. The drop-in offers a variety of supports and social opportunities. Overall, the
Vanauley Street YMCA offers mental health support, substance abuse programming, employment assistance, counselling, medical ser-
vices and legal services. It is completely barrier-free, ensuring those with mobility issues can make full use of it. There are also laundry facilities on-site. Importantly, the new building is brightly-coloured on the outside and professional-looking on the inside. For 21-year-old Prince, the new shelter is a massive improvement over the old YMCA shelter in the area. “It’s wonderful, clean and everything’s new,” he said. “I like that I have my own room and have that privacy.” Prince has made use of several of the Y’s programs, and found employment thanks to the organization’s support. “They definitely have really good services and everyone’s engaged,” he said. “They have a lot of activities for their clients to do.”

>>>from page 1 strict conditions – a “competent adult person who clearly consents to the termination of life and has a grievous and irremediable medical condition (including an illness, disease or disability) that causes enduring suffering that is intolerable to the individual in the circumstances of his or her condition.” Nash said Quebec should serve as an example of how the assisted suicide law could be implemented. It is the first jurisdiction in North America to allow medically assisted suicide under a recent provincial law. “We need to have a nonpartisan, very consultative discussion with Canadians across the country about what is the best way to implement the court’s decision,” said Nash, who added some of her New Democratic colleagues feel strongly in support of assisted suicide while other parliamentarians have serious concerns. We need to have a broad discussion about palliative care and endof-life strategy. – MP Peggy Nash
C h a r l i e A n g u s, M P f o r Timmins-James Bay, hosted a roundtable with healthcare professionals to discuss the state of palliative care in Canada last spring. The House of Commons endorsed Angus’ motion calling for a cross-country strategy on palliative and end-of-life care. ‘Broad discussion’ “One thing is clear – for people living in constant pain, we need resources. We need to have a broad discussion about palliative care and end-of-life strategy,” Nash said. While some west-end health care and hospice facilities chose not to weigh in on the Supreme Court’s decision, Feb. 6., Baycrest,
which specializes in palliative and end of life services in the Bathurst Street and Lawrence Avenue West-area, said it would continue to monitor the decision. “We believe all Canadians should have access to a range of palliative and endof-life services that reflect their individual care needs in hospital, long-term care and community,” said Dr. Paul Katz, vice-president of Medical Services and Chief of Staff, in a statement issued to The Villager. “ With regards to the Supreme Court ruling today, Baycrest will continue to monitor this decision, the legislation being developed by Parliament, and guidelines being prepared by professional organizations such as the Canadian Medical Association and the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario.” – with files from TorStar News
