New development, an increase in housing prices and gentrification are just a few reasons why the Roncesvalles-Macdonnell Residents Association (RMRA) executive committee has decided to embark on starting a community-led planning study. “Roncesvalles is clearly in a transition stage as a neighbourhood. neighbourhood to a more mixed neighbourhood. But there comes a point when you got to start thinking about it (the study) and we’re there.” Torry and the executive committee are in the early stages of creating this study in order to help give the community a unified voice when it comes to future planning in the neighbourhood. The importance of launching this study has become more prevalent in recent years, according to Torry, who has lived in the Roncesvalles area for about a decade and has seen the changes first hand. >>>CITY, page 6

Parliament needs to accept the Supreme Court of Canada’s decision to overturn the ban on doctor-assisted suicide and promptly begin a Canada-wide discussion about how to implement a new law, a local federal politician said. “This can be an issue people can be quite emotional about,” Parkdale-High Park MP Peggy Nash told The Villager following Canada’s highest court’s decision today to reverse the 21-year-old law. “The government needs to comply with the

decision and take immediate steps to have a national discussion on next steps.” The Supreme Court struck down the Criminal Code provision that was originally put in place more than two decades ago to protect those suffering from “grievous and irremediable medical conditions.” The government has a year to change legislation, said Nash, who admitted she hadn’t read the entire judgement.
