BioSteel Centre lays out welcome mat for Toronto Raptors HILARY CATON hcaton@insidetoronto.com Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment (MLSE) officially opened a state-of-theart training facility for the Toronto Raptors Wednesday morning, just a few days shy of the highly anticipated 2016 NBA All-Star Weekend festivities. To usher in the new Raptors home general manager Masai Ujiri spoke to the crowd of media and officials about what the facility means to the team. “This is home for us and we’re really, really proud of this,” Ujiri said. “This is an impact. This is an impact on the Raptors and our organization.” The BioSteel Centre is a 68,000-square-foot, two-storey facility stationed at Exhibition Place near Medieval Times. It took 13 months to build, start to finish. “It’s been a quick 13 months,” said Robert Hunter, chief project development officer for MLSE. “We’ve had an amazing team to try and get it done. We really had the focus on NBA All-Star that was our goal and our deadline.” The centre features two full-sized basketball courts, a spacious locker room with individual TV monitors above

each locker, a fitness weightroom and training area, and a players lounge with a fullservice kitchen and dining room. There’s also an extensive medical and rehabilitation area equipped with cold and hot tubs and an underwater treadmill, as well as an interactive operations room designed by IBM that delivers player and team statistics, trade simulation, contract management, and player information. Players can also get a fresh cut in the barber station just off of the locker room. The centre will also double as a community gym during the Raptors off season. Roughly 1,200 hours will be given to the community annually, said Hunter. Chair of the Exhibition Place board of governors Mark Grimes was also on site to see the latest sports addition. “It’s turning into a sports ground a little bit...I’m proud to be able to bring this to Exhibition Place and to the city,” said Grimes, councillor for Etobicoke-Lakeshore. “At the end of the day with the community use that’s going to happen here, it’s just a great partnership with a pro team. I’m excited to have this.” The facility originally had an additional 3,000 hours to give to the community but MLSE

Clockwise from left, Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment officially opened the Toronto Raptors’ new training facility at Exhibition Place; Present at the official opening ceremony included, from left to right, Matt Nichol and John Celenza (BioSteel), Mayor John Tory, Raptors President Masai Ujiri, MLSE Chairman Larry Tanenbaum and MLSE President Michael Friisdahl; A member of the event organizing team Frank MacLennan, left, and Peter Gammieri place the ceremonial basketball in the case Wednesday.

recently requested to move these hours from the BioSteel Centre in south Parkdale to the Youth Centre for Sports Development on Jarvis Street. It was a request that TrinitySpadina Councillor Mike Layton was initially wary about. “It’s a lot (of hours) but to be honest what they’re offering at the Jarvis facility is quite significant. More than 3,000 hours worth of space would

be available there to the community,” Layton said. “So I think by and large, as long as they’re coming through with that commitment it’s something we can get behind.” The community will be able to enjoy the basketball courts as early as this summer. Groups will have their own entrance on the north-east corner of the building. The courts will be sepa-

rated by a partition and the north court will be designated for community use, Hunter added. When the $30-million facility was proposed in August 2014, the community took an issue with the loss of green space, a baseball diamond, that would be turned into a parking lot for the facility. Layton said the Exhibition Place Board of Governors is working on returning that

green space to the grounds. “We’re currently conducting a parking study at Exhibition Place to find out where is it appropriate for us to make investments to increase parking and that will allow us to revert that greenspace to something more usable to the public,” he said. MLSE has committed to providing $1 million to restoring the green space.

Masaryk-Cowan Community Centre gets new basketball court NBPA and Canada Basketball invest in the Parkdale community HILARY CATON hcaton@insidetoronto.com Keeping the news that Masaryk-Cowan Community Centre was going to get a new gym floor from the kids that use it was tough. For two weeks the staff at the community centre remained pretty tight lipped about the overhaul, but it was worth it in the eyes of the community centre’s staff. “When it was unveiled they were surprised and excited.” said Pat McNaughton, the community recreation supervisor for Masaryk-Cowan Community Centre and Ward 14. “They were just so

impressed and excited. I’m elated. It’s a great change just to see how excited the kids and youth are about this gym. It shows them that someone cares.” The Parkdale community was invited to check out the new floor last Thursday at 220 Cowan Ave. with some special guests, including Mayor John Tory, Michele O’Keefe, president and CEO of Canada Basketball, Michelle Roberts, executive director of the National Basketball Players Association (NBPA) and Sim Bhullar, a basketball player from the Raptors 905 team. Roughly 30 kids came out to see the new court, test it out and shoot some hoops

with Bhullar. The refurbishing project was one of three courts that would get a makeover in the city thanks to the NBPA and Canada Basketball. The cost to refurbish each gym was $50,000 and was built by Connor Sports, the same company that built the courts for the new Toronto Raptors training facility, The BioSteel Centre, at Exhibition Place, which opened last Wednesday. The other two community recreation centres to get new gyms include at S.H. Armstrong Community Centre and Amesbury Community Centre. All three are part of the NBPA and Canada Basketball’s community investment pro-

grams. The gym is well-used by the community, said McNaughton, beyond the game of basketball. Sports like tennis, badminton and volleyball are all played in the one gym the centre has; hence the multitude of lines found on the new court. It’s also used for martial arts, dance and gymnastics programs. For the two weeks the gym was out, many programs had to be relocated to another community centre or to another room. The court was coming near the end of its lifespan at Masaryk-Cowan Community Centre, so the investment came at a crucial time, said Sue Bartleman, the manager of community recreation for the City of Toronto’s Parks, Forestry and Recreation

department for Toronto-East York. “There’s a massive amount of youth and kids that come and participate here. And this

floor was due to get redone. It’s the perfect candidate to get one and now it’s absolutely gorgeous,” Bartleman told The Villager.

Summer job can help make a positive change in a young person’s life

Write us

P

rime Minister Justin Trudeau marked his milestone of 100 days in office by marking what he hopes will be a new milestone for Canadian youth. Trudeau wants to get close to 70,000 youth working this summer, and the federal Liberals are committing massive amounts of money over the next three years to make that a reality. On Friday, he made a surprise visit to Toronto’s Dovercourt Boys and Girls Club where he announced the government would be injecting $113 million each year for the next three years to get young people in the workforce. The Canada Summer Jobs program provides funding to not-for-profit organizations, public-sector employers, and small businesses with 50 or fewer employees in an effort to help create summer job opportunities for students. The Trudeau government is on the right track to setting up students for success. When people are offered our view help, there tends to be a ripple effect. Support gives rise to Jobs today more support, and a spirit of and receiving is created. make engaged giving At the centre of this decision youth of future is not political popularity, but an understanding that empowering youth today will make them the engaged adults of tomorrow. They will learn life skills by doing them. They will learn co-operation and interpersonal skills by dealing with employers, customers and coworkers. They may develop meaningful friendships, build savings and start dreaming of a future of possibilities, that may have been clouded with fears and uncertainties. A job today equals an education tomorrow. A job today allows one to support her family in tough economic times. A job today helps a young person have hope for the future. The federal funding will be distributed to Canada’s 338 ridings. Areas that have higher levels of unemployed youth will get more funds. The program funds job opportunities for young people aged 15 to 30 years who are full-time students intending to return to their studies in the next school year. Employers and students interested in the program, should visit servicecanada.gc.ca/csj for more information. The application period for Canada Summer Jobs 2016 has been extended until March 11, so there is still time to get involved.

column

Sadness is at the heart of the Uber-taxi battle There have been few issues at Toronto City Hall so consistently suffused with sadness as the Uber-X ride sharing fight with taxi drivers has been this past 18 months or so. From the outside, it’s been easy to confuse that sadness with rage. At the early February meeting of Toronto council, taxi drivers’ rage was certainly on display: several had to be removed from the council chamber as they watched councillors step away from seeking an immediate court injunction to stop Uber-X from operating in the city. Last week, Paul Sekston, one of those taxi drivers, took that anger to the airwaves and announced the new United Taxi Workers’ Association would be staging a protest to disrupt the NBA All-Star Game and run-up to it. It would have been a bad scene had it happened, but it didn’t. The same day, Feb. 11, he and other members of the taxi industry had a sit-down

david nickle the city with three city councillors – Janet Davis, Glenn De Baeremaeker and Kristyn Wong-Tam – after which, they decided to call it off. What clinched it? They simply needed to hear city councillors say aloud the thing that is undeniably true. Uber-X, as it’s currently operating in the city, is illegal. And there it was: the heart of the sadness beating beneath the crumbling front of rage. Taxi drivers, or at least Sekston, need if not a hug, then at least some clear allies in what they perceive, correctly, as the fight for their vocational lives. Mayor John Tory has tried to provide some assurance after he mused about the inevitability of disruptive technologies in a way that seemed to be giving Uber-X a moral if not entirely legal break.

And from the perspective of taxi drivers seeing their livelihoods dry up, Uber-X has gotten an easy ride from almost everyone else on the legal front. Yes, it’s complicated. When cab drivers came to the Toronto Police Services Board demanding more drivers be charged, Chief Mark Saunders explained doing so en masse is legally and operationally challenging. And when cab drivers demanded Toronto enforce its own bylaw – passed just last fall – setting up requirements for UberX’s continued operation that the ride-sharing app and the drivers who use it couldn’t and wouldn’t meet, council demurred. Again, it was for strategic reasons: if an injunction can’t be heard for three months, and the city’s new regulations governing ridesharing apps will be before council in two, the entire matter may become moot. Meanwhile, Uber Canada continues its charm offen-

sive, delivering kittens to stressed-out office workers and experimenting with shuttle services to underserved communities near the downtown – and, of course, by undercutting taxi fares for customers who are becoming used to trading fare savings for the invisible risks of riding an unregulated service. And to add to the sting: the Toronto licenced taxi model isn’t a sterling alternative. While taxis are regulated, the vehicles more rigorously inspected and drivers more comprehensively insured, Toronto’s system of commodified plates and absentee owners still makes for an ugly feudalism under which drivers work now. It’s been awful to watch, no doubt awful to live, and it’s hard to see anything near a happy ending to it all.

School to have access to 10 of St. Joseph’s clinicians during and after school hours >>>from page 1 From Zachariah’s perspective, this clinic has helped families access necessary health care. “It’s been great. It does really make access easier. I’ve had parents who were struggling to see a family doctor and get on a wait list for services,” she said. “I just feel like the process has been made easier for them. It’s much more accessible.” The clinic, located in the former elementary guidance offices at the west end of the school, will provide an array of health care services to Parkdale students and children in the surrounding neighbourhood. The clinic will provide interpreter services since nearly 60 per cent of the students at the school speak a language other than English at home. This is the first partnership between the TDSB and St. Joseph’s. “I think this is a really exciting opportunity for us. I know not all care is required in a hospital environment and to be able to increase the health and wellness of your area, you need to be able to have all kinds of ways to access services,” MacLeod said. “This is a great chance for us to be able to be a great building block towards a seamless transition in their health and wellness.”
