A committed hockey fan, now in his 80s, Bob can rattle off the rosters of Maple Leaf players back to the 1940s. “I am a very avid Toronto Maple Leafs fan,” Bob said. “Right now they are on a roll.” He watches every game he can on the television, but has always hoped to make it to a game. So when he was given the opportunity to enter a wish into a draw at his home, Fairview Nursing Home near Dundas and Dufferin streets, his choice was clear. His wish was to attend a live game of his favourite team. Bob (the nursing home asked his last name not be used) has only been to one or two Maple Leafs games in his life and that was in his teens with his father at Maple Leaf Gardens. Ab i o l a Aw o s a n y a , t h e Recreation Therapy Programs Manager at Fairview Nursing Home, explained the Wish Program there was started in 2012. Fairview supports the Wish Program by fundraising with bake sales, craft sales and events. The local community is welcome to contribute to these events and can do so by calling Fairview. The Heavyweights Brass Band to release their second CD ERIN HATFIELD ehatfield@insidetoronto.com

W

hen he was 18 years old Christopher Butcher travelled to New Orleans, the birthplace of jazz music, on a family vacation and it set the course of his career. “It totally changed my life, seeing kids my age playing on the street corner in a brass band with two drummers and 10 horn players,” said Butcher, who, inspired by that event, went on to form The Heavyweights Brass Band, which has toured across Canada and opened for The Roots, Trombone Shorty and Galactic. The group has played Koerner Hall with Giovanni Hidalgo, a Grammy Awardwinning percussionist who has played with the likes of Phish and Paul Simon. The Heavyweights Brass Band made an appearance on CBC with the children’s television character Mamma Yamma. “This is music that will make you feel something,”

Butcher said. “We put the emphasis on the horns and that is what sets us apart from every other group in Canada. We are just horns.” Now 28 years old, Butcher, who lives at College Street and Lansdowne Avenue, started to play the trombone in middle school. “My cousin played it and I just remember thinking it looked cool and it sounded cool,” Butcher said. Originally from Winnipeg, Butcher come to Toronto to study music at Humber College and when he finished in 2009, he said he was compelled to put together a New Orleansstyle jazz band of his own that would be accessible and inspiring to the masses. This lead to the creation of The Heavyweights Brass Band, which is set to release its second album, Brasstronomical, next month. The band is composed of Butcher on trombone, Rob Teehan on sousaphone, Paul Metcalfe on saxophones, Lowell Whitty on drums, Jon Challoner on

trumpet, and John Pittman, a recent addition, also on trumpet. “These are some of the most gigging young musicians in Toronto,” Butcher said. “Which is how we came up with the name The Heavyweights.” Brasstronomical is the first album to be released on the newly formed Lulaworld Records, oper-

ated by Lula Lounge, which is Toronto’s home for live salsa, jazz, Brazilian, African and world music. The album release concert takes place at Lula Lounge, 1585 Dundas St. W., Thursday, March 6. Doors open at 7 p.m. and the show starts at 8 p.m. Tickets are $10 at the door or $20 with the CD. Opening the event will

be Street Brass, which is a community-based horn ensemble which Butcher fronts. Street Brass is open to anyone who plays a horn – high school level through to professional. Butcher leads a mixed group of horn players, who play music of the Americas: New Orleans Second Line, Cumbia from Columbia, conga from Cuba and more. Originally set up as part of the annual Uma Nota festival of Brazilian, Latin, Caribbean, Funk and Soul music, Street Brass is inspired by Brazilian bands that play in the streets there. “It is a community and it is open to anyone who plays a horn,” Butcher said. Although it is open to anyone, the Street Brass band will rehearse to learn the music together in

advance of the concert. The Street Brass rehearsals are scheduled for Sunday, Feb. 23 from 2 to 4:30 p.m. and Saturday, March 1 from 2:30 to 5 p.m. at Lula, 1585 Dundas St. W. Anyone can join the Street Brass facebook group (www.facebook. com/?sk=h_chr#!/ groups/225935894241378/) for updates on rehearsal and the music they will be playing. Butcher said he expects they will get about 30 players out to perform as Street Bass March 6, and as far as he is concerned the more the merrier. “The only thing I am concerned about is that The Heavyweights have to play after,” Butcher joked. “Five horn players competing against 30.” Special guests for the release concert include Jane Bunnett, Jay Douglas, Luis Orbegoso and DJ General Eclectic, one of Toronto’s finest DJs.

f we were to wipe off almost four years of dust from our crystal ball, the smoke would reveal a possible provincial election this spring. With that, comes uncertainty and, potentially, the province’s (and with it Toronto’s) transit file getting derailed – again. If we are to take Metrolinx at its word, the provincial transit agency has put everything on the table when it comes to transit in the Great Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA). At its recent meeting, a long list of options was presented by staff, which will then get whittled down following consultations with the public and elected officials. More consultations? More waiting. And what feels like more of the same, which our view amounts to very little. Cynicism aside, Torontonians should attend Project any and all meetings when it comes to transit solutions. We deadlines need voices at the table. As many have to be met voices as we can muster. With some projects now underway – the Eglinton Crosstown LRT; the Scarborough subway given the green light – and Metrolinx committed to a share of the subway relief line within 15 years, we have a shot at being part of the discussion. And according to Metrolinx CEO Bruce McCuaig, the plans are not limited to one major project, but likely a series of improvements in the short, mid- and longterm. However, there needs to be a maximum time allotment for dealing with any project - big or small. No more open-ended deadlines. Projects take years – sometimes decades – to complete; so too much lag in decision-making is foolish. Each day we consult, every week we wait for another meeting, the longer it will take to actually finalize a transit solution for the GTHA. If Metrolinx is to embark on another series of consultations – the first round kicking off in March – we should be there to voice our ideas. With an initial short list of recommendations to be presented to the Metrolinx board in June, and a final list by this coming winter, things will hopefully become focused. But when these projects will be completed is not so definite. A change in governments should not lead to changes to these approved projects. Deadlines have to be met. Decisions have to stick.

Councillor Del Grande exceeded expectations In my career as a journalist, I’ve only made two politicians angry enough to put me on their do-notreturn-calls black list. The first was former mayor Mel Lastman, who never got over the fact that I didn’t endorse him for mayor in the 1997 election. The second was Councillor Mike Del Grande. In 2004, a year after he was first elected, he took me on a pre-Christmas tour of his ward and made some comments about the changing demographics there: specifically that white people were moving out as Chinese people were moving in. I recorded them, and reported them accurately. They showed up in the Scarborough Mirror over Christmas. By New Year’s Eve, commentators from outlets across the country were saying the worst things about Del Grande. And that was it for us. For the next 10 years, Del Grande would not return

david nickle the city phone calls, speak with me or even acknowledge my presence – with rare exceptions, usually when I’d written something that made him angry enough to warrant a tongue-lashing. Over the weekend, Del Grande made it known that he won’t be seeking reelection. I have not called the councillor about this. So instead, I write this column: in part, as an open letter to a councillor who has spent a career throwing up his arms in frustration and anger at his critics and his colleagues – and at the same time, accomplished many of the things I think he hoped to see happen after he was elected in 2003. Del Grande came to city hall with an accounting background, and he believed he was a person to sort out Toronto’s fiscal

woes. He wasn’t able to convince mayor David Miller, and that began seven long years in the wilderness. When Rob Ford announced his intention to run for mayor in 2010, Del Grande was among the first to support him, and when Ford won, Del Grande’s support was rewarded with the job he first eyed: Toronto’s budget chief. And no one can deny Del Grande worked that job hard. Possibly a little too hard, given the toll it took on his health. Unlike other budget chiefs, he took on the lion’s share of the work himself – often complaining of the long hours he spent at home, trying to fit the camel-sized realities of the cost of government through Ford’s needle-sized expectations of the price. Deputations coming before budget committee might have been put off by Del Grande’s gruff manner of questioning. But he did use the answers he got to

put forward moderate compromises he hoped would get the final result through council. And it almost worked. But Del Grande quit the job in 2013, when council voted to add just a little more spending to his budget against his wishes. As far as he was concerned, he felt “vilified.” At this year’s budget meeting in January, he railed, quite accurately, against the lack of civility, and elsewhere has criticized, again quite accurately, the moral decline Ford has brought to the office of mayor. And now, as Del Grande prepares to exit the realm for good, I hope he doesn’t think too poorly of the place he feels used him so badly. It may not have lived up to his expectations – but really, over 10 years here, he has only exceeded so many of ours.

istered through SKETCH, a community-arts initiative, based in the downtown west end, aimed at engaging at-risk and homeless youth. Now in its fifth year, SHINE! keeps alive the memory and music of west-end musicians Fay and James Gray, while helping to further the career of young musicians who may face barriers to their study and practice of roots music. MacCormack, who lives in the Dufferin Grove area, is the founder of the Jim Fay Music Bursary. Fay, who played guitar, mandolin, mandola and harmonica to perform Celtic, folk and acoustic music, was 44 when he died. “I am amazed that we are still doing this five years (later),” MacCormack said. “There isn’t a single planning meeting that goes by that someone doesn’t mention Jim and the way he was. It is interesting that the way he was in life he has been in death. Gently, subtly and thoughtfully making a differ-

It isn’t a mainstream bursary. Instead, the Jim Fay Music Bursary can go toward buying a guitar, repairing a computer or even a month of rent. But Mary MacCormack, wife of the late Jim Fay, a folk musician who died suddenly in October 2008, explained this unique bursary program is all about getting a little money directly into the hands of young people who really love music and really need help. The Jim Fay Music Bursary is intended to support youth 16 to 24 living in the Greater Toronto Area who face financial barriers impeding their study or practice of traditional, folk or roots music. Funding for the Jim Fay Music Bursary is raised through the annual SHINE! concert event. This year’s event is on Sunday, March 2 at 7 p.m. at Lula Lounge on Dundas West. The bursary is admin-

ence in people’s lives.” James Gray, a former member of Blue Rodeo and fixture in the downtown Toronto music scene, died last summer at the age of 52. His family put on two tribute shows at the Dakota Tavern last August, which raised some money. It was suggested to the family they look into SHINE! and the bursary program when they were deciding how best to put the money to good use. MacCormack said they not only handed the funds

to the bursary program she had started, but Gray’s brother, Michael Gray, joined the SHINE! organizing committee. This year there will be five bursaries of varying amounts including two bursaries of $2,000, one in Fay’s name and the other in Gray’s. The selection process is extremely tough, MacCormack said, since the winners are chosen by the committee based on ability and need. “We get a lot of debate over

music genre,” MacCormack said. “Some kids do rap or hip hop and I can’t judge it because it wasn’t what Jim was about.” MacCormack said she hadn’t expected the bursary program to live on for five years, but now that it has, she hopes it continues. Since the SHINE! event started five years ago, the audience has steadily grown, and in 2013 the show was moved from Hugh’s Room at Dundas Street West and Roncesvalles Avenue to a larger venue, the Lula Lounge at 1585 Dundas St. W. The lineup of musicians this year at SHINE! include: The Jerome Godboo Band; Russell deCarle Trio; Lorraine Segato; Andrew Cash; and Chelsee Livingstone, a young musician who was awarded the first bursary in 2010. Livingstone is now 29 and lives in Guelph, ON. Originally from Nova Scotia, Livingstone said she was attracted to Toronto by SKETCH and their arts pro-

gramming. She lived here for five years before moving to Guelph a year and a half ago where she teaches guitar and mandolin. She and her partner also perform folk music regularly as a duo. She used the bursary to fix her guitar, which was broken at the time. She also purchased resources such as music books. “I put some money toward buying a computer so I can record music,” Livingstone said. “It helped me a lot. It went a long way.” She said the idea of having a bursary that doesn’t have to necessarily go toward tuition, as is often the case, is a good idea for musicians like herself. Tickets to SHINE are $25. Funds raised at this year’s concert on March 2, and any donations that come in throughout the year, will be awarded at the 2015 SHINE! concert.

St. Joe’s cardiologist offers tips to keep your heart healthy lisa rainford lrainford@insidetoronto.com

five times a week,” she said. Eat a healthy diet comprised of lots of fruits and vegetables, particularly green veggies, and lean protein, such as fish and fibre, she said. “I tell patients they should see their doctor at least once a year to make sure they’re not developing high blood pressure or diabetes,” Anselm said. Today, heart disease and stroke take one life every seven minutes, according to the Heart and Stroke Foundation – 90 per cent of Canadians have at least one risk factor. Heart Month was created by the Heart and Stroke Foundation, a group of Canadians, including physicians and researchers, who banded together more than 60 years ago with a mission

In recognition of Heart Month this February, Dr. Anjali Anselm, a cardiologist at St. Joseph’s Health Centre, shared some basic tips to help keep your vital organ healthy. It’s important not only to raise awareness of heart health, but also awareness about how to prevent a heart attack and heart disease, Anselm said. Although no one can change his genetics, there are simple (and not so simple) steps people can take to reduce the risk of heart attack. Top of Anselm’s list: Avoid or quit smoking and exercise regularly. “I tell my patients to get 150 minutes of exercise a week. That’s at least a half (an) hour

to bring heart health to the forefront of the public agenda while empowering researchers to curb heart disease and educate Canadians about their

hearts. Spearheaded by Dr. Wilfred Bigelow, the Heart Month campaign began in 1958 with a commitment to raise $600,000

toward heart research. In Ontario, volunteers from Hamilton, Kingston, Lakehead, London, Oakville, Oshawa, Peterborough and Port Hope launched a doorto-door campaign to raise a provincial goal of $250,000, however, they far exceeded the goal and collected $320,000. Once called the ‘Heart Sunday Canvass,’ it’s known today as the February Heart Month Person-to-Person canvass, the Heart and Stroke Foundation’s largest and most well-known campaign. The symptoms of a heart attack are varied, however, patients who suffer from one typically experience chest pressure and tightness and a shortness of breath. According to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, both men and women can experience

nausea, sweating, pain in the arm, throat, jaw or pain that is unusual. “Patients tend to describe the pain like bricks or an elephant sitting on their chest,” Anselm said. “Get medical attention immediately; call 911.” A heart attack causes lean muscle damage, Anselm said. The key is to limit the amount of muscle damage. Doctors will open up the artery to assess the damage and patients will be prescribed blood thinning medication and cholesterol pills to stabilize the blockage. Prevention is key, Anselm said. 90-minute workshop Feb. 27 at Bishop Marrocco/Thomas Merton CSS >>>from page 1 how damaging it can be to a person’s sense of freedom... security and safety.” During the past number of years, Kuck said he has married his experience as a police officer and as a victims’ advocate to give an impactful street-proofing workshop for women to make sure if the circumstances arises, they know how transition from being a victim to a survivor as

well as teach them to become attuned to the environment they are in. They will then learn “How to use all their senses to be aware of their environment,” Kuck said. Kuck also teaches what offenders fear and how they select their victims, information which he said is based on the hundreds of interviews he has done with offenders. “I also walk the people

in the workshops through mental exercises to assess their own personal strengths and weaknesses,” Kuck said. “Then we go through a decision-making tree as to, if something is about to happen or is happening, nobody can tell a person what to do or how to act, they have to, onedimensionally, make that up in their own mind.” That decision is threefold, Kuck explained: to physically

resist and fight, to run and take flight or to comply with the demand of the offender. “Women will learn a decision-making tree on how to assess their strengths and weaknesses, where they are and the environment and who the offender may be,” Kuck said. “Then they make the decision: will they fight, will they run or will they comply.” The timing of the workshop was intended to educate women and students in

advance of March Break when they might be travelling out of the country or are going to parties. The workshop takes about 90 minutes and Kuck said it is for teens to elderly women. “I think 13, 14 and 15 year olds would get the message because of the new maturity of that generation,” Kuck said. “(Anyone) younger than the teens might not appreciate the nuances and some of the life skills.” There is some instruction

on physically protecting yourself, but Kuck said it is by no means a martial arts course. Kuck’s Women’s StreetProofing Workshop will be presented Thursday, Feb. 27 from 7 to 9 p.m. It will be held at Bishop Marrocco/Thomas Merton Catholic Secondary School at 1515 Bloor St. W.

There are 108 residents at Fairview, most of them had lived in the immediate area, and all are welcome to place their wish in the wish box, but they are asked to keep the budget in mind. “We actually have a wish box and each quarter we have some kind of special event where we draw a name,” Awosanya said. “Residents can nominate one another, staff can nominate a resident or they can nominate themselves.” Family members are also encouraged to make wishes on behalf of residents who might not be cognitively aware the program exists, Awosanya said. The first winner was a resident named Sybil, originally from Jamaica, who made a wish to dance to some reggae music so Fairview brought in

an entertainer who specializes in reggae music. “She got all dolled up and we had a nice Jamaican meal with all the residents,” Awosanya said. When possible, Awosanya said, they try to arrange a way for all the residents to celebrate with the wish winner.

The last wish was drawn at the Fairview Christmas party and Bob, with his wish to see the Maple Leafs, was the winner. Tickets to the game turned out to be more expensive than Awosanya had expected and the quarterly allotment was far from covering the cost of Bob’s wish. “And the prices are getting more expensive because they are winning,” Awosanya said. “So I have been looking on Kijiji to try and find some.” When Allan MacDonald, president of Canadian Tire Retail learned from The Villager the predicament Fairview Nursing Home was in, he knew he could easily remedy it. MacDonald arranged to have two wheelchair accessible tickets delivered to Bob. Bob and a staff member from Fairview will be attending the March 3 Maple Leafs game against the Columbus Blue Jackets.

PERFORMANCE ◗TheTTC REPORTS TTC is promising to

release a series of quarterly performance reports in 2014 to track how well it has lived up to past commitments to improve service. The reports, the first of which will be available by mid-April, are intended to evaluate how well the TTC has fared when it comes to implementing service improvements as promised in this year’s customer charter. Announced last week, the 2014 charter lists almost 40 promises for service improvements. Some of its first-quarter commitments include new janitor uniforms, additional staff to deal with Wheel-Trans customers and spring cleaning at every TTC station. Other customer service pledges for this year range from the debut of new TTC streetcars and articulated buses to regular subway platform lighting maintenance. To have a look at the full list visit www.ttc.ca

NEPTIS EVALUATES ◗A research GROWTH PLAN group which recently issued a critical review of Metrolinx’s Big Move transit expansion plan is now setting its sights on the province’s official growth strategy for the Greater Golden Horseshoe (GGH). Next month in collaboration with the Canadian Urban Institute, the Neptis Foundation will issue its evaluation of the eightyear-old Places to Grow Act, intended to encourage GGH growth while reducing traffic congestion and preserving greenbelt lands The review will reportedly take the province to task for not encouraging enough mixed-use development, which benefits better public transit, as well as walking and cycling options. Such growth can also fuel high levels of community opposition due to

fears of increased urban density. The review is on Thursday, March 6, starting at 7:30 a.m. at North York Memorial Community Hall. Former chief city planner Paul Bedford is scheduled to moderate a panel discussion at the event. For details go to www. canurb.org WITH PRESTO ◗TheWIN CONTEST Presto transit fare card system is holding a contest in honour of its one millionth customer. Between now and March 10, Metrolinx is giving away hundreds of dollars in the form of Presto travel vouchers to celebrate the anticipated tapping on of the millionth customer of the service. Metrolinx tackling subway congestion RAHUL GUPTA rgupta@insidetoronto.com From big-ticket transit expansion to improvements to existing GO service, everything is on the table for Metrolinx when it comes to improving subway congestion. The transit planning agency has already committed to delivering its share of a subway relief line within 15 years, part of its list of priority projects. During a meeting of the Metrolinx board last Friday, a long list of options was presented by staff studying which will get whittled down following consultations with the public and elected representatives. According to Metrolinx CEO Bruce McCuaig, the plans will not be limited to one major capital project but likely a series of improvements in the short, mid and long-term with input from the regions’ major transit providers including the TTC. “We’re not talking about a

We’re not talking about a single project, we’re looking at a series of things... – Bruce McCuaig

single project, we’re looking at a series of things that collectively Metrolinx, the TTC, York Region Transit and others have roles to play in achieving,” said McCuaig following the meeting. “We’ve come to the conclusion there’s not one single answer, there’s a whole bunch of different challenges. There’s different answers to different challenges and I think that’s what we’re trying to develop.” Unlike a corresponding city and TTC-led study of the subway relief line – details of which are expected to be unveiled within weeks – looking specifically at how and where to best build a new downtown subway relief line, the Metrolinx’s Yonge Relief Network study attempts to plot out a “mental map” of

the challenges facing transit riders living inside and outside the 416 boundaries and facing heavy congestion on the Yonge subway line. Options under consideration for the study are diverse and range from high cost undertakings like expanding and electrifying the GO train network to relatively straightforward improvements, such as improving stations. With as many as 150 potential options to examine, study head Leslie Woo admitted the task for the study is immense ahead of issuing the final shortlisted recommendations in winter 2015. “The approach we are taking is start big and then reduce,” said Woo during her presentation to the board. A first round of public meetings will begin in March, including a date in Toronto. The meetings will be held in concert with the city and the TTC.
