Trinity-Spadina residents have turned their riding from orange to red, electing Liberal Adam Vaughan to replace outgoing NDP MP Olivia Chow.

Vaughan took to the stage and thanked his parents for their inspiration.

“My mom’s hard work wore off on me; my father who served on city council...always believed that ideas can change the world,” he said.

The newly-elected MP emphasized his desire to focus on building housing, building transit, and reinvesting in cities.

Vaughan pointed to the residents of Alexandra Park as a model group for communitybuilding.

“City of Toronto could use a lot more of Alex Park; Alex Park could use a little more from the City of Toronto,” said Vaughan, vowing to fight for the community in Parliament.

Liberty Village arts show keeps Toronto Pride going

Showcasing five queer painters until July 15 at Gallery NeXt NATALIE CHU nchu@insidetoronto.com WorldPride may be over, but Toronto’s LGBTQ arts community is still celebrating.

For Parkdale artist Ashley McKenzie-Barnes, that meant expressing her story in two paintings at the Liberty Village gallery show: Untitled // The Practise of Identity showcasing five queer painters that premiered Wednesday night, June 25.

“My pieces were heavily focused on feminine sexuality and the representation of females,” McKenzie-Barnes said.

The designer by trade and curator for Toronto’s popular Manifesto festival said her two portraits gave the audience a piece of herself.

“I had a chance to showcase who I am, a black, African-Canadian who is very in tune with her sexuality,” she said.

This is a big year for queer Torontonians and it’s a chance to show everybody who inclusive and creative we are.

the show will draw a range of audiences and give them a chance to “indulge” in the theme and messages presented in the pieces.

“Identity is something that we can all open our minds to and there are so many different takes,” she said. “I want them to enjoy what they’re seeing and what they’re feeling.”

‘Move forward unified’ Pride in Toronto, she said, is very communal. “I think we need to keep continuing that community that celebrates itself and move forward unified,” she said.

The show’s curator, Mia Mirana Raicevic, said the show’s opening night was more of a “big community event.”

Raicevic, who collaborated with gallery owners Jonathan Girard and Alexandre Legault, put the show together in under a month.

“We thought, let’s do something that’s close to our heart,” she said. “This is a big year for queer Torontonians and it’s a chance to show everybody how inclusive and creative we are.”

She said the artists featured “all fall between the spectrum” and their works brought the right “energy” to the space.

“You will be so overwhelmed by the power of

some of these paintings,” Raicevic said. “There is frustration, sensuality and their own personal struggles and how they persevered in the work.”

“All the artists are open

books. So many people really connected with them,” Raicevic said.

Raicevic also hopes to give back to the community, and will donate a portion of the proceeds of any art sales to the 519 Church Street Community Centre.

“My favourite thing about Pride is not the parties, but just standing on the street and watching the people – people that aren’t even locals being excited about Toronto, and the city becoming colourful and being proud of what we have achieved,” she said.

The show runs until July 15 at Gallery NeXt, 219 Dufferin St., unit 102b.

Lawyer’s Fringe Festival show fundraiser for city’s hungry

Watching Seana McKenna Watch Paint Dry starts showings July 4 LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com Novelist, actor and retired lawyer Diane Baker Mason says her mother used to say that the key to life is to surround oneself with likeminded souls.

Following her mom’s words of wisdom, Baker Mason, a Roncesvalles Village resident, has done just that, connecting several years ago with a group of kindred spirits – lawyers and thespians – through the Nightwood Theatre’s annual Lawyer Show in which lawyer-turned-actors perform a different Shakespeare play each year.

Twelve of them, all lawyers, will be performing at the Toronto Fringe Festival as part of the play Watching Seana McKenna Watch Paint Dry.

Baker Mason credits her friend Peter Hamiwka a one -time filmmaker turned lawyer for being the “brain child” of the whole production.

The Bloor West resident sparked on the idea after hearing something a friend said about Seana McKenna (a Stratford Shakespeare Festival veteran actress). “(He said) he’d be willing to watch Seana McKenna in anything, even watching paint dry.”

That conversation was the catalyst for Hamiwka and Baker Mason’s Fringe festival offering, which Hamiwka submitted to the Fringe as just a title.

Hesitant to divulge too much, Baker Mason and Hamiwka would only say the play is exactly what its title suggests – to the horror of audience members when

Ford wrong to play favourites with media

W

ith Mayor Rob Ford’s return to civic politics after a stay in a rehabilitation facility, we would expect to see some lessons learned and some new attitudes heading into October’s civic election.

Ford has been a controversial figure at the best of times, with as colourful a political persona as his private one. It’s all made for curiously divisive leadership for this large, world-class city.

But when he begins to hold press conferences, picking and choosing whom he invites from the accredited city hall media gallery, we’re not quite sure he’s learned much during his time away.

Surely all news organizations deserve a place at the mayor’s table.

Metroland Media Toronto puts close to 500,000 newspapers on Toronto doorsteps every Thursday, with nine newspapers, including The Parkdale Villager. Then there’s our insidetoronto.com website.

And we haven’t even mentioned the 100-plus other Metroland newspapers in the province posting the stories we our view tell on their own websites.

That’s not a bad household Mayor exludes reach and larger than the citizens when he Globe and Mail, Toronto Star, Toronto Sun and National Post picks favourites distribution combined on that day of the week.

But it wasn’t enough to avoid exclusion from the mayor’s first meeting after rehabilitation earlier this week, along with The Canadian Press and NOW magazine and others.

We expect sitting politicians and hopeful candidates understand people receive their news and information in a varied number of ways.

When you play favourites with the media, you shut the door to opportunity to reach citizens who voted you into office.

We really don’t get the point.

Surely he might have learned that through his trials and tribulations with the Toronto Star.

We sincerely hope Ford’s time in rehabilitation facilities has helped combat his personal issues.

Given his comments when returning to Toronto on Monday, he would like you to believe that, too.

We’d love to spend the months leading to the next civic election talking about policy and performance and not abuses. But being exclusionary to some media members continued a bad pattern of his prerehab practises and doesn’t create confidence in Ford having changed his practises.

The mayor has a chance to hit a reset button.

We’re not convinced he is prepared to take advantage of that opportunity.

Ford must address his personal record Mayor a long way from being able to boast political achievements

I

t’s hard to know what to make of Rob Ford’s return to office.

In the speech he gave in front of a few reporters, Ford started off seeming quite contrite. He spoke of his enlightening experiences in the GreeneStone rehabilitation centre – that he overcame his own penchant for denial and understood his addictions to drugs and alcohol are diseases that will require constant, diligent treatment.

He pledged to keep clear of the dangerous and unhealthy associations that have supported his addictions.

He even apologized – to Torontonians and city councillors, and especially councillor and mayoral candidate Karen Stintz over remarks he made. And he acknowledged he is not asking for forgiveness.

david nickle the city That was a pretty good first couple of steps on a road heading toward redemption. But as the speech finished up, it was as though he stepped up onto the sidewalk, crossed a parking lot and disappeared down an alley.

It became clear quickly that Ford’s speech was an election speech.

He spoke of his accomplishments, both real and simply claimed: how the mayor stopped the gravy train, saved money contracting out garbage and saved public anxiety by making the TTC an essential service.

A few breaths after saying he was not asking for forgiveness, he announced his intentions

to ask for another mandate, and said he hoped to continue to be mayor for many, many years.

And when faced with a barrage of the many questions that still hang over his mayoralty, he packed up his papers and walked off, answering not one of them.

Now, to be fair, the mayor’s office and his brother Doug Ford had indicated for some time that the mayor wouldn’t take questions.

But a spontaneous answer or two might have gone some way to clearing away the stink of a selfsatisfied stump speech that hung in the mayor’s wake.

Given that he didn’t, the mayor might have spent the time talking about those hundreds of millions of dollars he’s saved taxpayers answering

some of the questions he might have anticipated, and apologizing more specifically for his racial, homophobic and sexist slurs.

He might have apologized to the city staff that he’s on record as having abused. He might have apologized to Toronto Police Chief Bill Blair. He might have explained himself, in terms other than those that seem drawn from the pages of a recovery self-help book as much as they were from true epiphany.

The reality is Rob Ford is a long way from being able to boast about a political record, without first addressing the serious deficit in his personal record.

She cites the “Paradigm Shift” mural by graffiti artist KWEST, found at the former Mascot cafe, at 1267 Queen St. W., as a hit.

Graffiti art housed along Milky Way in Parkdale are also some of Goskey’s favourites.

“I thought, ‘These are like Picassos,” Goskey said. “I love art and this is my way to live and bring people to amazing local treasures to our city.”

Her first client, Toronto resident Daichi Okada, brought a friend visiting from Japan for the tour.

“I liked it a lot. She (Goskey) put a lot of effort and research into it and she really knows the area,” he said.

This was also Okada’s first time in Parkdale.

“It’s a really nice area. I liked looking at all the graffiti and learning about how old they were,” he said.

Goskey first got the idea of starting Toronto walking tours while on a trip to southeast Asia when she met Natasha Peterson, who is starting an Idaho chapter.

An avid traveller, Goskey took walking tours in Berlin and Peru and wanted to bring some of the adventure here. However, she said her tours would feel a little different.

“There’s no Machu Picchu (a 15th-century Inca site in Peru) here. It’s going to be a very different dynamic and it’s a great way to increase your awareness of street art style,” she said.

Though she recently moved into the neighbourhood, she said she enjoys the community and has some history in this place.

“My grandmother is from Parkdale so I feel like I’m attached to it through her,” she said.

“I love the coffee shops, the parks are the best, and there’s a vibrancy in the community,” she said.

Vacancies for two city council seats draw 49 applicants Seats in Trinity-Spadina and Etobicoke-Lakeshore A total of 49 people have applied to fill two vacancies on Toronto Council – and on July 7, they’ll all interview for the jobs in front of 42 city councillors and the mayor.

The list of those interested in taking the places of ex-councillor Adam Vaughan in Ward 20 Trinity-Spadina and newly-minted MPP Peter Milczyn in Ward 5 Etobicoke-Lakeshore was released last Thursday.

In Ward 20, 29 people have applied, including former Scarborough Southwest Councillor Adrian Heaps.

In Ward 5, former city councillor Blake Kinahan is asking for the appointment, as well as community worker Agnes Potts – who Milczyn hinted he might support, following his election. Also in the running is Kinga Surma,

a former employee of Milczyn’s, who left his office after working on the campaign of his 2013 byelection opponent, Doug Holyday.

All of the candidates for the job will be able to address Toronto Council at a special meeting July 7, starting at 9:30 a.m.

It could take some time.

Each candidate can address council for up to five minutes, after which all 43 members of council may ask that candidate one question each.

Council will vote on the new members by ballot, and they will be sworn in to serve the remainder of the term immediately afterward.

The victor, whose pre-political career included work as a broadcast journalist with both CityTV and the CBC, was known as a vocal critic of Mayor Rob Ford on Toronto’s council.

Vaughan has a long history

in Trinity-Spadina, from his school days in the Annex to his current life as a father of two living in the Trinity-Bellwoods area.

The race was positioned as a two-candidate battle between Vaughan and Cressy since it started.

The win follows a trend begun earlier this month, when Liberal Han Dong

defeated NDP incumbent Rosario Marchese to win the provincial seat in TrinitySpadina.

Dong, who introduced Vaughan said, “No more excuses, no more stategic voting, we flat-out beat them (NDP). I am so excited that now I will be working hand-inhand with the best representative for this community.”

Surrounded by supporters at a jubilant victory party at the Steam Whistle Brewing Company, Vaughan credited the young Liberal, first and foremost for his success in the campaign.

“It was your hard work, day in day out, door by door, voter by voter, conversation by conservation,” said Vaughan, who also credited both new and old Liberals.

Vaughan was Joined on stage by Liberal Party of Canada leader Justin Trudeau, who said, “This man, right here, is the full package.”

“Canadians voted tonight for the kind of team that we’re going to be building for the 2015 election. We need not just a different government in Ottawa, we need a better government in Ottawa.”

Parkdale native wins emerging screenwriter award ERIN HATFIELD plv@insidetoronto.com In Elene Mekete’s childhood home her parents, who immigrated to Parkdale from Ethiopia before she was born, didn’t play English language movies. So it might seem like a stretch that the 25 year old would receive national recognition for her screenwriting, but that is exactly the case for the recent graduate of the Toronto Film School.

“My parents never watched any English films so I didn’t have a background in film history,” she said. “I couldn’t say that I loved film or wanted to be a filmmaker because I didn’t have the knowledge of these things.”

Despite the lack of exposure to movies in her early years, Mekete was recently named one of the Telefilm Canada 2014 New Voices Award winners. Telefilm Canada is a federal cultural agency devoted to the development and promotion of

the Canadian audiovisual industry.

New Voices Awards are given each year to five emerging screenwriters across Canada. Each of the winners were given complimentary registration to the 5th annual Toronto Screenwriting Conference (TSC) in April, plus lunch with Glenn Cockburn, the founder of the TSC and President of Meridian Artists Literary Agency.

“It is definitely the first recognition of my writing, outside of people just reading my stuff and giving me feedback,” Mekete said.

“Hopefully it will help me in the future. I will probably apply to Telefilm one day to try to get a movie made.”

Mekete, who now lives in North York, was a teenager when she started to explore films. She can recall renting movies without knowing what was popular, instead literally judging the film by its cover.

in New York she decided she wanted to study film.

Her passion for writing stories and creating characters led her to the Film Production program at the Toronto Film School at RCC Institute of Technology.

Although Mekete said she was initially attracted to

the Writing for Film and Television program, she said she settled on the Film Production program in case she decided she wanted to direct films in the future.

“I wanted to learn the language and be able to communicate. I wanted to learn everything in terms of production,” Mekete said.

As part of the program Mekete took some script writing classes and it was there she learned to translate her lifelong love of writing for film and screenplays.

“When I started learning that for school I realized it was where I wanted to be,”

Mekete said. “I love the production side and I still work and help produce projects, but writing is where I feel most at home.

“I have always considered myself a writer first because I grew up writing all the time,” she said. “So that was where I was most comfortable.”

Mekete graduated from the Toronto Film School in December 2013 and since then she has been applying for various writing programs and grants specifically for screenwriting.

During her second term at Toronto Film School, Mekete wrote and directed an independent project called Handle With Care, which was featured, in part, in the Toronto Urban Film Festival ( TUFF). That piece won Mekete the Most Ambitious Local Female Director award at TUFF. Mekete continues to write scripts and was recently hired as one of the crew for feature film Kidnap Capital.

CNE looking for volunteers

Council amends parking on grass ban

More than 2,000 people have volunteered through Friends of the CNE program NATALIE CHU nchu@insidetoronto.com With all the rides, midway games and food, a summer in Toronto just isn’t complete without the Canadian National Exhibition.

But for one woman, a visit to the Ex also means two weeks of meeting and greeting new people to the grounds.

Isabel Mazzotta has been volunteering with the Friends of the CNE program since it began 14 years ago. More than 2,000 volunteers have participated in the program.

“For me, it’s tradition. It’s the place to be. I love standing at the gate and watching everyone come in from all walks of life,” she said.

In addition to meeting guests, Mazzotta and other volunteers are responsible for providing directional information, handing out programs and overseeing

special events such as the annual food drive.

“I’m there to make sure everybody has a good time,” she said.

Mazzotta’s love of the fair began as a child when her par-

ents immigrated to Toronto’s Little Italy with her siblings.

She remembers walking Strachan Avenue and viewing the exhibition grounds as the go-to entertainment place.

As she grew older, she looked for a way to be more involved with the event that brought her so much joy as a child. This year, she looks forward to seeing some new and some familiar faces.

The volunteer program isn’t reserved for dedicated individuals or students looking to fill their community service hours.

“We look for folks who are enthusiastic because the Friends of the CNE is usually the first face CNE guests will see,” said Peter Philpot, manager of guest services at the CNE. “We want the experience to be positive from the beginning.”

One of the biggest benefits of becoming a volunteer, he

said, is gaining basic customer service skills.

Mazzotta said she’s learned a lot about people while volunteering with the CNE. “I’ve developed patience.

I’ve seen a lot of different attitudes and personalities,” she said.

And it’s fun.

“For three weeks you’re there and you are part of a family. You don’t want to go home,” she said.

The 136th annual Canadian National Exhibition (CNE) runs from Aug. 15 to Sept.

The ban was recommended by the city’s Parks and Environment Committee as a way to protect parkland from damage from cars.

But the ban caused problems for groups such as the Canadian Film Centre, which uses parkland parking for a barbecue during the Toronto International Film Festival.

The film centre, which operates out of the E.P. Taylor estate, needs the parking for some of the guests.

Also affected are ribfest events across the city.

“I think it’s critical in certain parks we’re able to park on the

grass,” said Etobicoke North Councillor Doug Ford. “The ribfest over at Centennial Park, there’s not enough parking there. If we expect people not to park on the grass, we better give them an alternative parking lot to park in...”

Council approved an amendment by Peter Leon that would set criteria for allowing parking in city parkland. Parking would not be available if other parking were available within the vicinity, or there were options to park elsewhere and be shuttled to the event.

As well, the availability of public transit and impact on the natural environment would be taken into account.
