kicking it! Oliver Wille, centre, moves the ball for the Rockers as they face the Strikers at Sorauren Park Monday evening.

Sorauren Park Town Square opens NATALIE CHU nchu@insidetoronto.com After weeks of construction delays, the new Sorauren Park Town Square is finally here. Despite a hot and humid Monday night, residents of Parkdale and Roncesvalles Village were eager to welcome

the city’s newest public space. Hundreds of people chanted, “This is not gravy!” as men tore down the blue fencing separating the new public space from the rest of the park. The space was outfitted with new pavement, a lush lawn and planted trees residents quickly began to water at the open-

ing. Students of Howard Junior Public School also held a dancea-thon fundraiser to install two new benches in the park. “I see flash mobs and festivals ahead,” MPP Cheri DiNovo said to the crowd. Shortly after the opening speeches, a zumba class began in the new square amidst the festivities.

Local city councillor Gord Perks also spoke to the crowd, thanking the Wabash Building Society for its continued efforts in creating a multi-purpose space. “Already we see people out singing and dancing together and we’re going to be able to >>>linseed, page 6

Former Toronto diversity officer and longtime Ward 20 activist Ceta Ramkhalawansingh is the new city councillor for Trinity-Spadina, following a second-ballot win at Toronto council’s special meeting to fill that vacant seat and one other on Monday. Ramkhalawansingh received 22 votes on the second ballot over former Edmonton police chief Robert Lunney, who finished with 18 votes. “I am relieved after a long morning of balloting and listening to everybody’s speeches,” said Ramkhalawansingh, who was among 29 hopefuls for the job of interim councillor in Ward 20. The seat was vacated by Adam Vaughan last month to run – successfully – in the June 30 Trinity-Spadina byelection. Ramkhalawansingh is a 43-year resident of the ward, having come to Canada in 1967 along with her family. Until four years ago, she was the city’s diversity manager of community engagement, and since then she’s been doing volunteer work on municipal issues and on ward matters. >>>endorsed, page 11

Cooking unites police and students in the kitchen Toronto Police constable cooking up a storm with students at Bishop Marrocco/Thomas Merton Catholic Secondary School NATALIE CHU nchu@insidetoronto.com Toronto Police Const. Candy Graham was a little tired of seeing takeout fast food in the halls of the school she works at. “There were McDonald’s bags everywhere,” Graham said. “Life is so fast and so many people don’t know how to cook anymore, especially kids.” The school’s resource officer was eager to make a change. With a love for cooking and a little creativity, Graham began the Cooking with Cops program three years ago at Bishop Marrocco/ Thomas Merton Catholic Secondary School in partnership with ProAction Cops & Kids Toronto chapter. The school’s resource officer was already running a basketball program for atrisk male youth. The cooking program, however, drew

interest from both males and females at the school. “It’s very popular,” she said. “I mean, who doesn’t love food?” Graham loves to cook, but doesn’t refer to herself as a chef by any means. She said her first challenge was cooking in the school kitchen with more than 10 students between two stoves. “I’m in my uniform and I’m cooking near a hot stove with the kids,” the officer said. “It’s a lot of fun.” Some of the menu items included: lemon-cranberry scones, mini shepherd’s pies, and one of Graham’s favourites, homemade gnocchi, taught by the wife of one of her 11 Division’s superintendents. In fact, it’s common for Graham to bring in family and friends as “guest chefs.” This year, Graham’s sister made an apple crumble pie, a hit amongst the students. Oftentimes, the students

are asked to cook for school events such as the athletic banquet or arts retreat. They’ve done other outreach events too, including feeding the homeless. Each year, the students also host a finale dinner. This year’s meal was held at Thai Chef restaurant on Roncesvalles Avenue. The students were able to tour the kitchen and learn the restaurant’s spring roll recipe, which they later enjoyed. “It was the most authentic Thai food I’ve had,” said 16-year-old Sharlyn Barahona, who has been part of Cooking with Cops since it began. For Barahona, meeting twice a week to cook with Graham and other students has helped develop her love for being in the kitchen. She even teaches her mom new recipes. “I like how much food brings people together and seeing how excited and how

happy everyone is. Whether it’s washing dishes or stirring the sauce, or asking who has the salt,” she said. Graham said some students have already expressed interest in joining a culinary arts program in the future. She also hopes to collaborate with the school’s media arts teacher to create a cookbook of the students’ favourite recipes. “I like the experience it gives the students, plus it teaches them about teamwork, hard work, dedication and commitment,” Graham said. “I truly love it.” But for the officer, the best part about the program is going beyond the kitchen and building relationships with the students at the school. “They don’t see me as a police officer half the time, I’m just a friend now,” she said.

Fat Girl Food Squad talks food, fat, feminism in new film series NATALIE CHU nchu@insidetoronto.com

F

ood, fat and feminism are the three “fs” Amanda (Ama) Scriver loves to talk about. And now a fourth, film, will combine Scriver’s favourite ideas with a frank discussion about body image, health and fun. Scriver, co-founder of Toronto blog Fat Girl Food Squad, will join other members in a new summer film series at the Belljar Café in Roncesvalles Village. “We’re all about IRL (in real life) hangs with our readers,” Scriver said. “It’s a great opportunity to get together and see films that relate back to what we’re discussing online.” Starting this month, the squad will offer free screenings of films that relate to food and the ideas that surround it.

FoodShare’s Julie Nowak will also be leading a discussion on food security after this month’s pick, A Place at the Table. Scriver started the first Fat Girl Food Squad with friend Yuli Scheidt last spring as a response to food and body positivity blogs out there. “It was difficult to find images of plus-size women eating food,” Scriver said. “We wanted to say it’s OK to eat and be OK in your own skin, and I think people are really loving that,” she said. Scriver said the blog is filled with honest discussions on how food and size is being portrayed in the media. “We’re not a recipe blog,” she said. For example, there is an upcoming post in response to the controversial “Nothing tastes as good as skinny feels” campaign by model Kate Moss. Within the year, new chapters, or squads, formed

across Canada in Hamilton, Ottawa and Winnipeg and across the world in Denver, Los Angeles and Australia. All squads go by the motto that “there’s a fat girl inside everyone”, which Scriver said is about “embracing and enjoying every size, race, gender and

sexuality” within and just “loving life.” “We’re unabashedly loud and proud about these things,” Scriver said. “Food is fun and we’re trying to break barriers on weight, mental health and body image,” she said. The film series comes

after a successful string of meet-ups with readers, including last month’s plus-size pop-up shop, an art show and their popular “Bloggers who Brunch” series bringing other media together. “We wanted a creative outlet where we could meet over a great meal to get to know these people,” Scriver said of the event. One brunch attendee ended up becoming a contributor to the blog. Scriver, who grew up in Toronto, and now calls the Junction home, said the city often provides great inspiration for the blog. “I used to live on top of Bacchus Roti in Parkdale,” Scriver said on discovering Toronto’s cuisine, while listing Thai and Indian cuisines as her favourites. “The thing about Parkdale is that it’s so diverse and you can get different types of cuisines, no matter where you go in the

city,” she said. The team is in the midst of launching a new website with local artist collaborations, and are planning a guacamole fundraising event in support of the Toronto Rape Crisis Centre. Scriver, who recently finished a photoshoot in Trinity Bellwoods park with “lots of cake”, said it was always her intention to have images of the team “making ridiculous faces while eating” and keeping things light. “At the end of the day I’m happy and I’m enjoying every moment,” she said. The Fat Girl Food Squad Summer Film Series runs every month beginning July 17 to Sept. 11 at the back patio of The Belljar Café, 2072 Dundas St. W. Film and popcorn are free.

T

he World Cup of Soccer ends this weekend with the championship and third-place matches. And while the 2014 version has already provided plenty of heart-stopping action for soccer fans, let’s hope this event has planted the seeds for a lasting legacy in Toronto’s communities. The event may have been hosted in Brazil, but the World Cup has a significant impact in a city as diverse as Toronto (where nearly half the residents speak a language at home other than English). The World Cup is a true spectacle, and not just for fans of the two remaining teams vying for the championSunday. Whether it’s been by our view ship meeting new people out to watch a game at a local establishment, Helped forge or having the opportunity to learn about another country and deep lasting more its culture, Torontonians are witconnections nessing a unique opportunity for community building. Events that enable citizens from diverse backgrounds to gather together often help forge deep lasting connections. And that’s not all. Sports events like these inspire stars of the next generation. In that, the World Cup is no different than the Stanley Cup or the World Series. And there’s definitely value to a community in a less competitive vein – the benefits of regular physical activity for our youth: soccer can be an outlet for that. And compared to other sports, soccer is relatively affordable. We’ve recently profiled a number of local soccer organizations in the city that aim to benefit from the exposure the World Cup has brought. Visit our website at www.insidetoronto.com/ worldcupTO to read those stories and all other coverage we’ve compiled on the World Cup and the 32 teams participating. Finally, those of us still craving international sporting competition after watching the World Cup don’t have long to wait and have the opportunity to experience the competition live. The FIFA Under-20 women’s soccer championships are being hosted in Canada later this summer, Aug. 5 to 24. A number of games will be in Toronto at BMO Field. Two of Canada’s three games in the tournament’s group stage are here in Toronto.

Dirty deeds in 2014 mayoral campaign? Is it going to get dirty this mayoral campaign? That’s what Doug Ford suggested Tuesday as he told reporters he believed a rival political campaign might be responsible for smashing a window in his SUV outside his Etobicoke home the previous night. That morning, a group of bare-chested protesters made a show of themselves behind Doug’s brother, Mayor Rob Ford, as he gamely bulldozed through a speech highlighting possible traffic woes. This Passion of the Fords’ narrative was upended somewhat when Citytv uploaded video showing a police officer chiding Ford’s sobriety coach for apparently kicking one of the protesters. That protester, a 52-yearold Scarborough housing consultant with the name of John Furr, confirmed in an interview he had indeed been kicked, and added he was surprised when a

david nickle the city police officer said it was Ford’s coach who’d done the alleged deed. Furr said that from the force of the kick, it felt more like “a two-year-old.” No charges were laid in the incident. Furr has also made clear he is not part of a mayoral campaign. The jury is still out on Doug Ford’s speculative allegation that someone associated with the election smashed his car window in the middle of the night. But Doug Ford is correct in saying things are getting if not dirty, then extremely ugly following Rob Ford’s return. Rob Ford’s half-hearted attempt at a mea-culpa fell flat – at least so far as the polls are concerned. The mayor still has supporters – he was

given a hero’s welcome at the Caribbean Carnival launch Tuesday, and on Monday was cheered on by an entourage of T-shirtwearing supporters – his detractors seem to have both multiplied and intensified. Inchoate rage They have moved from fascinated disapproval to inchoate rage over the time of his absence. East York school teacher Joe Killoran, who offered Mayor Ford a blistering, bare-chested rebuke as he joined a Canada Day parade, has become a poster boy for this nouveau fury. Tommy Lenathen, a longtime city employee from Scarborough, is the equivalent to Doug Ford, as he came to city hall to excoriate the Ward 2 councillor for his remarks in The Etobicoke Guardian about autistic children.

It may, one supposes, emerge that these two and also the crowd of anti-Ford protesters who’ve been sitting vigil outside the mayor’s office are political operatives for one campaign or another. It is more likely, however, the people who are shouting over the mayor’s speeches and calling his brother a bigot are responding with genuine anger – at the racism, sexism, homophobia and lewdness the mayor has expressed – that is not so much motivated as it is provoked. Have they crossed a line, these protesters, in doing so? Of course they have. As we trudge through the waning of Rob Ford’s 2010-2014 term of office, that line is so far behind us we wouldn’t recognize it if we saw it.

Bike park set to open

PROMO ENDS

JULY 24th

LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com One of its designer’s “finer” designs, the Sunnyside Bike Park is scheduled to open mid-July, according to a City of Toronto Parks, Forestry and Recreation department spokesperson. Close to three quarters of the long-awaited and eagerly anticipated bike park’s riding features are constructed, said Scott Laver, acting supervisor of natural environment and community programs. “There is a lot of buzz from online cycling forums to people coming by the site asking questions of our construction team through the construction fence,” Laver said. “The site has great exposure to the general public from vehicular and pedestrian traffic along the lakeshore and as the park is taking shape, people are starting to understand what it is we are building and how it will be used.” Situated north of Lake S h o re B o u l e v a rd We s t between Ellis Avenue and Colborne Lodge Drive, the park will be the first official outdoor off-road cycling facility of its size in Toronto – and people are “very excited to have this kind of recreational opportunity,” Laver said. Initially proposed for the parking lot in the southeast corner of High Park, the strip of land between the Gardiner Expressway and Lake Shore Boulevard was a better fit for its larger size, its accessibility and visibility. Even though surrounded by roadways, there are still lots of trees and shade, making it feel like it’s immersed in nature. The city enlisted the talents of internationally acclaimed Jay Hoots of Hoots Inc., a world leader in the design of community-based bike skill parks and trail systems. Hoots has built more than

50 projects in large city and small-town environments and boasts experience developing facilities internationally. Riding professionally for more than a decade, Hoots said he doesn’t subscribe to any one kind of riding and was inspired by American daredevil and entertainer Evel Knievel. ‘Cool environment’ Hoots has said he couldn’t be happier with the outcome of the project. He sought input from bicycle motorcross and mountain bike enthusiasts from across the city, who attended an initial public consultation meeting in October 2011. At an event to unveil the park’s design in June 2012, Hoots credited them for their ideas. “They were some of the most insightful and well researched groups I’ve ever done meetings with,” he said. “I had an actual list, priorities from all different levels – it was a really cool environment. It was a really delightful experience.” Collaborating with Jay Hoots Inc. on the design and construction team is Victor Ford and Associates and

Ferdom Construction. “Construction is going well. We are very happy with the progress of the project and the quality of work,” Laver said. The 5,000 square-metre park will be able to accommodate as many as 100 riders at one time. The park is being built to accommodate the rookie rider to the veteran rider and everyone in between. “This park has a little bit of everything for everyone,” Laver said. “Some of the exciting features include an extensive skills area, a series of wooden riding features that wind their way through trees, pump tracks, a large start hill that gives you a spectacular view of the city and many dirt jumps and berms,” he said. A Sunnyside Bike Park Volunteer Work Day was held Monday, June 20 from 5 to 8 p.m. Volunteers helped to construct and shape riding features, lay mulch and clean up garbage.

She remembered when the community first broke ground for the park and has witnessed the transformation of the area from an old TTC garage. “More people are getting involved and these developments have boosted the neighbourhood,” she said. Another resident, Stephen Dorsey, brought his wife and young daughter to the opening. He said the space gives children a much-needed chance to get out and play. “It’s wonderful, lots of fami-

lies are moving in and this is really a community effort,” Dorsey said. “We’re definitely heading in the right direction,” he said. With the first phase complete, city staff were eager to remind residents of fundraising for phase two which would install new park furniture, a community bake oven, a trellis to hang a movie

screen and the biggest project: turning the old linseed factory in the square into a new community centre. “Now that we’ve opened the square we have one thing left, the community centre,” Perks said. “We still have work to do.”

It’s not over yet for the Parkdale Community Health Centre’s (PCHC) Harm Reduction program, despite recent Toronto Public Health funding cuts to the program and subsequent public outcry. “There was a lot of anxiety because people were concerned that we would lose this essential program. But we’re going to keep it running,” said Bronwyn Underhill, director of the PCHC service. Due to extra funding from gaps in staff and last year’s budget, Underhill said the centre would be able to continue the program for now. “We were able to cobble some other sources, but this is not a permanent answer,” Underhill said. The centre is also soliciting donations through its website. For 24 years, the Parkdale Community Health Centre has serviced the neighbhour-

hood’s most vulnerable with its harm reduction room. Offering a safe needle exchange, health workshops, and peer support, PCHC distributed thousands of clean items last year including 79,000 syringes, 9,000 crack pipes and 53,000 condoms. The harm reduction program is currently operating at its minimum staffing requirements, with two peer support workers each day meeting with clients. The room is staffed with members of the community who have had a history with substance abuse in partnership with physicians. The program also helps keep the streets clean by preventing the disposal of syringes in parks, alleyways and garbage cans across the neighbourhood. “We don’t as a city put enough money into harm reduction programs. Every year, some extremely important programs go wanting,” city councillor Gord Perks said

in an interview. “I can’t stress enough how important peer support workers are. Getting people in the drug community help others in making it a safer community, helps to rebuild lives,” he said. Perks adds the decision about program funding should be left to medical professionals in the field to critically determine what services are in most need, not for politicians to “pick and choose” whatever seems essential. “It becomes a decision between saving lives in one neighbourhood and saving lives in another,” he said. Though PCHC expects to reapply for Toronto Public Health funding next year (an $80,000 appeal), Underhill said they would also be looking to diversify their funding sources. “This is a huge community health centre program and we want to make sure it’s sustainable,” Underhill said.

Monks make colourful sand creations

Swept away: Tibetan monks create a sacred Chenrezig Mandala (sand mandala) at Harbourfront Centre Sunday afternoon. Among the Tibetan arts, painting with coloured sand ranks as one of the most unique and exquisite. Staff photos/BRIAN B. BETTENCOURT
