Toronto Council has repealed the interim control bylaw preventing restaurants and bars from opening on Queen Street in Parkdale, for all but the most concentrated stretch of Queen Street, as the city and the Ontario Restaurant, Hotel and Motel Association (ORHMA) head toward an August showdown at the Ontario Municipal Board. The bylaw was put in place last year to prevent restaurants and bars from opening before the city had completed a study

of Queen between Dufferin Street and Roncesvalles Avenue on the best way to regulate bars and restaurants along that part of Queen Street. On July 12, Toronto Council lifted that interim control bylaw, following the approval of a permanent bylaw last year. That repeal means the city will be accepting applications for restaurants along Queen Street through Parkdale with the exception of the stretch between Brock Avenue and Dufferin Street. Behind every great artist is an equally dedicated mentor. That’s the idea behind Gallery 1313’s new art mentorship program, running from July to the end of August, and geared toward artists just leaving high school or in post-secondary education. “It’s an outreach program to get Parkdale youth interested in the arts and to get to know the large artist community here,” said Phuong Nguyen, program co-ordinator. Exposing participants to the

numerous artist resources in the community (including multiple galleries) and learning from established practicing artists are on the agenda. Depending on the type of work produced, there will also be some type of showcase near the end of the program. “The work is almost secondary, it’s more about the experience,” she said. It’s the first year of mentorship in the gallery, and currently 10 participants from Parkdale and across the city have signed up. Nguyen said what makes the >>>PARTICIPANTS, page 11
