How to be a brown teen at Lab Cab NATALIE CHU nchu@insidetoronto.com Being a teenager isn’t always easy. For Nerupa Somasale, growing up as a first-generation Canadian also brought its
unique challenges. In the short film How to be a brown teen Somasale and friends Sanjay Ratnan and Ahash Jeeva explored what it’s like to grow up in Toronto with immigrant southeast Asian parents.
“It was comical and definitely inappropriate,” the 18 yearold said of the film they made almost four years ago. With no script, the teenagers based the performance on previous rants about the annoying quirks and values they had to
adhere to in their households. The film will screen at this year’s Lab Cab Festival along with another video project produced by the Parkdale-based youth arts group Somasale and her co-stars are a part of. >>>FILM, page 12
In academic terms, Tony Chen is just shy of perfection. The 18-year-old Parkdale Collegiate Institute graduate was one of three Toronto District School Board (TDSB) Top Scholars celebrated Friday at UofT’s AeroVelo lab. He graduated with a 99.5 per cent average, and is heading to McMaster University to study life sciences. “Thanks to all my friends for keeping me sane, my competitors and my teachers,” he said in a media conference July 18. Chen was joined by this year’s highest top scholar Justin Li, graduate of Marc Garneau Collegiate (with a 99.8 per cent average) and Bloor Collegiate Institute graduate and Harvard University-bound Lauren Sorensen (99.7 per cent average). Both Li and Sorensen were also part of another rigorous academic program, Talented Offerings for Programs in the Sciences (TOPS). Chen said he wants to become a doctor, and will be working this summer as a graphic designer and website developer for Science Expo, a student non-profit connecting high school students with innovative scientific opportunities. He said the key to his success this year was taking a lot of pride in his work. “I don’t like to be motivated by other people, or have others pushing me. I just have this innate drive to do well,” he said. Chen also took time for extracurriculars, becoming the yearbook editor, and starting the school’s board game club. In his free time, Chen said he enjoys playing the piano, doing improv and playing ultimate frisbee. Though he isn’t a resident of Parkdale, he said he enjoyed being a part of the neighbourhood’s community. “It’s a very multicultural area and the atmosphere at the school is very accepting and nice,” he said. Parkdale CI Principal Irene Chewchuk was also in attendance, and was “blown

away” by Chen’s performance at school. “We knew right from the get go that Tony is a really special young man. Over the past couple of years he’s really become a leader in the school,” she said in an interview with The Villager. Chewchuk pointed to Chen’s eagerness to keep extracurriculars running, rapping on the PA system to encourage students to recycle and being so gifted in music that when he plays he “takes me as a listener to a different realm” as a source of pride for the student.
At commencement, the staff even brought in a wheelbarrow to symbolically cart off the many awards Chen won during the year. Despite the acclaim, Chen sums up the year in a humble manner. “I thought it was a lot of fun. There were some stressful times, but I think the experience was worthwhile,” he said. His biggest advice for other students is to prioritize and focus on learning things that interest them. “The marks really are secondary. It’s about doing what you love,” he said.

Getting around - by car, bike, subway, streetcar or other methods - is a major topic of conversation in Toronto these days. Transit is a key issue and it’s an important one for residents to be plugged into. We at The Guardian recognize that navigating all the information out there, about current projects, road
construction, future and proposed transit plans, is not an easy task. That’s why we and our sister papers at Metroland Media Toronto have launched a new transit portal online, where you can find transit information in a simplified fashion. See the new website at

“
UNITY Festival, July 23 to 26, a place youth can highlight the genre’s many art forms NATALIE CHU nchu@insidetoronto.com
E
ngaging youth with hip-hop culture is teaching them all about inclusiveness. That’s what Toronto hip-hop emcee Galyn Esmé (who goes by the stage name NiLLa) hopes the atrisk youth she works with will understand. “Hip-hop gives them hope. I think it’s important that youth see that they’re valuable and appreciate what they have and who they are,” she said. Esmé currently works as a coordinator for UNITY Charity’s Toronto chapter, an initiative empowering youth through after-school programs in breakdancing, graffiti art, spoken work and beatboxing. The charity is nationwide, reaching more than 100,000 youth across the GTA, Halifax and Calgary.
Esmé will also be performing at the sixth annual UNITY Festival, a four-day event starting July 23, which highlights the different art forms, culminating into a large concert at Yonge-Dundas Square July 26. “It’s really the highlight of the year. It’s a great opportunity for youth to showcase their art form and represent themselves at such a young age,” Esmé said. “The talent is just brimming over the top. It’s incredible.” Throughout the last four years working with the program, Esmé said she has seen many teens grow up and find their voice, often a far cry from their beginnings. “They’ve become so confident and so compassionate. I’ve seen a lot of them heading a negative way and they turn around. And that

means everything to me,” she said. The peer support within
UNITY has also given teens the opportunity to explore their art form and build
relationships. Esmé ran her own afterschool program this year called Share our Spirit connecting more than 60 Peelregion youth with Nunavut youth. During March Break, she also took two teens in the program to the northern territory to meet the Inuit teens, where they learned how to facilitate workshops. By the end of the week, the teens learned dance routines, wrote a song together and started a new dance crew. “The youth there deal with a lot of abuse and they need these tools to process, and hip hop is the most beautiful vehicle for that,” she said.
The biggest change she saw was the youth there becoming more engaged and excited to go to school. Overall, Esmé said the organization gives young people in the city more than just a platform for the arts, but leadership skills that are valuable in any profession. “I didn’t have this kind of step when I was growing up. There was no access to programming like this and I needed it. And I know that they need it,” she said. Esmé has lived in Parkdale for about four years and hopes to start a UNITY chapter in the neighbourhood. laid back “I love that it’s very artistic and creative here. It’s colourful and I love that it’s rough around the edges,” the Regina, SK, native said. “There’s a lot here. It’s not pretentious; it’s laid back, and it’s genuine,” she said.

Mayor Ford and hecklers need to stick to issues

I
t happened on Monday and it will probably happen again. Rob Ford will attend an event and hecklers will protest against him, turning whatever the intended purpose of the event was into a sideshow of the debate over the competency and morality of Ford continuing as mayor. It’s a bad situation, which needs to be re-examined both by the Ford campaign and those opposed to him. On Monday, Ford attended the opening ceremonies for Woburn Park in the North Toronto area. The park means a lot to residents who live in the area, but you would never have known that by the circus surrounding Ford. Hecklers interrupted him, and the media fired questions at him about his time our view in rehab, his use of drugs and more while Ford posed for photos on playground equipment. What Protestors wasn’t discussed was Woburn helping, not Park. It was a similar scene at the launch of the Pan Am/ hurting Ford recent Parapan Am Games countdown clock in Nathan Phillips Square. It’s one year until Toronto hosts the Games, but much of the event seemed to be dominated by a confrontation between an angry Ford supporter and those protesting against the mayor and the media in general. Both sides need to do better. Ford needs to respect the difference between a community event and a campaign event; and so do those who are following him around protesting. There is nothing more for the protesters to gain if they want to complain about Ford’s personal life. Whether they are wearing shirts or not, they need to stick to the issues of the campaign. Yelling at Ford about crack smoking gains them nothing. Right now, the protesters are probably helping Ford more than hurting him. What we want from this mayoral campaign is some solid, fact-based discussion on how to pay for transit improvements in Toronto, whether to abolish or stay with the Land Transfer Tax and how to attract and keep businesses operating within the city’s borders. Those questions need to be asked and answered in an appropriate manner, rather than in the circus-like atmosphere in which the mayoral campaign is currently taking place.

Summer fun on the streets of Toronto
T
he local calendar was packed to the brim last weekend. In addition to the Jays/ Texas Rangers series and the Honda Indy, there had to be at least a dozen street festivals, too. I never realized we had that many festivals going on at one time. I was so intrigued I figured I’d check them all out. Then the rain came pouring down on Saturday which meant, if I was actually going to do it, instead of the luxury of spreading them out evenly over the weekend I’d have to jam them all in to one day. It was a tall order, to be sure. But, hey, I like challenges. So I got up bright and early Sunday morning hopped in the car intent on giving it my best shot. I decided to start with a classic, the Extremely Popular Annual DowntownFest. You couldn’t ask for a better one to kick things off and I was really pumped.
jamie wayne guest column Alas, I never made it. No matter which direction I turned I kept running into DisruptionFest. It’s been growing year after year, but I’ve never been a big fan. It’s always the same old, same old and this year was true to form. At virtually every intersection I was re-routed by its partner street fairs: ConstructionFest, Road ClosureFest, DetourFest, You Name ItFest. And Not Necessarily In That OrderFest. I’m not crazy about of any of them, either. They really get my goat, who incidentally is also not too fond of them, as it turns out. What troubles us is that they’re tied to three other fests that we don’t particularly care for either: the Seemingly Endless Gardiner Expressway MaintenanceFest, the
Ubiquitous Way Overdue Pothole FixFest and one making its inauspicious debut this summer, the Doing A Lot Of Miscellaneous Repairs Now In Hopes Of Somehow Averting The Anticipated Commuting Nightmares During The Pan Am Games Next SummerFest. Also known as Lots Of LuckFest. The offshoot? Local traffic gets to the virtual StandstillFest. Ah yes, the legendary Standstillfest. Where you’re serenaded in the background by the not so dulcet tones of Driver Expletive DeletedFest and Horn HonkingFest, which, neither me nor my goat are also not too wild about, if you’re keeping score at tome. Nope, it wasn’t quite the best way to start my festival search. So I decided to turn the car around, drop it off at home and once re-energized, head to the subway for a fresh start. It was just what the doctor
ordered. Once through the turnstiles, the smile quickly returned to my face. Alas, just a few stops after I hopped on the train there was a familiar weekend message on the intercom system: Passengers were being ordered to hop off and advised to make their way to the bus platform for Shuttlefest. It was tempting, to be sure, but I just wasn’t in the mood. So I declined the offer and decided to do the rest of my street festival seeking on foot. As soon as I got outside the station I took a deep breath. Then another. And another. After which I immediately started coughing. Just my luck. I was smack dab in the middle of SmogFest. Oh well, there’s always next weekend. Jamie Wayne takes writing very seriously. The topics? Not so much. You can contact the writer at jamie.wayne@sympatico.ca

Run in support of High Park Zoo during Scotiabank marathon LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com The Friends of High Park Zoo is looking for a few good runners (or not-so-good runners). The group is seeking runners in this year’s Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon to run and fundraise in the name of animals that call the zoo home. Consider this: the Toronto Zoo attracted as many as 1.4 million visitors last year while the High Park Zoo, at a fraction of the size, attracted more than 500,000 visitors in 2013, said Friends of High Park Zoo vice-chair Simone Stock. Torontonians managed successfully to keep the zoo from closure in the wake of the city’s decision to cut funding in 2012, raising more than $340,000 to keep the zoo in operation over the past two years. Since the zoo’s funding
was restored at the end of January, Friends has turned its attention to capital projects to enhance and sustain the facility. “The zoo is desperate for capital improvements,” Stock said. The goal is to enhance the zoo for both animals and visitors. This includes creating a much larger watering hole for the llamas so they can cool off in hot weather and update their stable. The goal is also to re-do the surface of the front of the pen where visitors go in to feed the llamas. The Friends of High Park Zoo is in the midst of a fundraising match campaign with help from the Honey Family Foundation. Over the past two years, the Honey Family Foundation matching initiatives have raised more than $200,000 in support of the zoo. This year, the organization has agreed to increase the size

of the matching program by 20 per cent to $60,000. If friends can raise $60,000 by the end of June, the Honey Family Foundation will match the funds for a total of $120,000. Friends is just under half way to reaching its goal of $60,000. Given the late start this year due to weather, the deadline has been extended to July 31. As part of the annual waterfront marathon, the Friends of High Park Zoo will host a neighbourhood cheering section to encourage not only those running in the name of the zoo, but all participants on Oct. 14. “It’s a fun, community event that takes place on the waterfront,” Stock said. It’s a gig unlike any other she’s ever had before. Saxophonist Chelsea Shanoff is in the midst of touring Ontario on two wheels as part of the Bicycle Opera Project. The Roncesvalles Village resident is one of seven singers and musicians who have embarked on an 800-kilometre trek, hauling their own instruments, props, costumes and sets in trailers attached to their bikes to bring contemporary Canadian opera to non-traditional venues across the province. This, the Bicycle Project’s third season, is billed as its most ambitious to date, featuring 20 performances t h ro u g h o u t Ju l y a n d August. “It sounded like a fun way to spend the summer,” Shanoff told The Villager, Wednesday, July 16 from one of her tour stops. The Bicycle Project is the first-ever gig of its kind for Shanoff not only because she’s cycling to each venue, but because the saxophone rarely, if ever, accompanies opera singers. “It’s different than what I normally play,” she confessed. “I have to work hard not to overpower the singers.” Shanoff says she’s welcomed the change of scene as well. “It’s nice to be out of the city, doing fitness and performing,” she said.
While she is no stranger to cycling – Shanoff has done a lot of city cycling as a means of getting around – she said she has enjoyed riding her bike in the countryside. “You don’t have to worry about cars and there are no traffic lights,” she said. “There’s no ‘cars versus cyclists’ atmosphere.” Setting off from Kingston July 4, the troupe cycled west, stopping in Prince Edward County, Belleville, Campbellford and Warkworth. The western leg of the tour features shows in Hamilton, Bayfield, London, Stratford, Brantford, Guelph and Waterloo. The tour wraps up in Toronto with four dates in August at the Evergreen Brickworks, on Toronto Island and at the Toronto Summer Music Festival. The Bicycle Opera Project was established by Larissa Koniuk and Nadia Channa in 2012. “ We w a n t e d t o d o a summer project that was satisfying and meaningful to us,” soprano Koniuk, a former Roncesvalles Village resident, who now lives in the Bloor West and Bathurst streets-area, said. “I used to know some folk musicians who’d toured on their bicycles and custom-made trailers for their instruments.” The Bicycle Opera Project aims to break down the barriers to opera, she said. “People tend to think of
opera as an elitist art form, conjuring images of corsets and bull-horn helmets,” Koniuk said. “We break these barriers by getting dirty on our bikes and spreading opera across Ontario in a style that is modern and relatable. Cycling also happens to be economically and environmentally friendly.” They’ve even incorporated the bikes into their performances. A backdrop of illustrations created by Bekky O’Neil is powered by a bike generator, Koniuk said. The four singers and three musicians perform “very dramatic pieces to comedic” in small, intimate venues to give audiences the chance to get up close and personal. They’ve performed in everything from small cafés and bars and wineries to a renovated barn. “It’s really fun to engage the audience. You can see their reactions right away,” the performer said. The group cycles an average of 60 to 70 kilometres a day and try not to perform on travel days. Other than the odd hilly terrain, the cycling is manageable, said Shanoff, who picked up the saxophone for the first time in junior high. “I didn’t want to play it at first, but ended up with it. It’s so versatile. You can make so many different sounds,” she said.

Dufferin Grove footpath unveiling LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com It is with a mixture of excitement and disbelief that Florian Shuck will officially unveil Canada’s first public reflexology footpath in Dufferin Grove Park on Saturday afternoon. He’ll be joined by family and friends of his and latepartner, Jenna Morrison for whom the footpath was created and named. “At one point, it was just a dream of my wife’s; now, it’s a reality,” Shuck said. “It’s quite overwhelming.” Shuck is at the park regularly to oversee the path’s installation and this week, the finishing touches. Changes are happening daily, he said, and expressed his awe for the landscape architect and construction team’s skill set and compassion for the project. It was key to create a public memorial for Morrison in the park the couple and their young son frequented, because, Shuck said, “Jenna was always compassionate and seeking to contribute to
the greater community she was part of.” Morrison, a 38-year-old expectant mother, yoga instructor and health practitioner, was riding her bike on her way to pick up her five-year-old son from school when she was struck and killed by a truck at the corner of Dundas Street West and Sterling Road in November 2011. The reflexology path captures Morrison’s spirit, Shuck has said. “It relates to our life story.” On a visit to Seoul, Korea in 2001, Morrison, who lived in the Dundas Street West and Sorauren Avenue area, discovered the widespread popularity of reflexology footpaths throughout Asia. Inspired by this notion, Morrison dreamed of creating such a footpath in one of Toronto’s public parks. Her dream is about to come true. Shuck said he hopes the path, in Morrison’s honour, will evoke people’s sense of “engagement, compassion and health.”
Asked if the footpath has turned out they way he had hoped, Shuck said, “Absolutely. It has exceeded my expectations as Jenna always did as well. It’s very special.” The footpath is situated at the south end of the park near Gladstone Avenue and Sylvan Street. With the support of Davenport residents and the City of Toronto, the footpath was built to honour Morrison while also providing a permanent park amenity for all Torontonians to enjoy, according to local councillor Ana Bailao. “This is a great addition to the neighbourhood,” Bailao said . “It’s great to be able to join the family in this special moment.” Some features include thousands of stones of various sizes to stimulate and massage the feet, as well as a seating area with a grove of gingko biloba trees providing a contemplative experience.

The unveiling of the Jenna Morrison Reflexology Footpath take place Saturday at 2 p.m.
Film ‘How to be a brown teen’ screens at this year’s Lab Cab, July 26 and 27 >>>from page 1 Named the Torontonians, the teenager said being a part of the group not only gave her an outlet to express herself artistically but also “tested the boundaries of social interaction” with adults. “We’re often seen as immature, impulsive and ignorant, but we wanted to make adults realize that we’re all human beings going through different experiences,” she said. Parkdale, the neighbourhood Somasale has lived all of her life, provided the perfect backdrop for the film. “I was raised in this microcosm of Parkdale. I wasn’t so prideful of it at first, but I’ve gained so many different experiences because it’s so rich in different cultures,” she said. “It truly is the landing strip of Toronto,” Somasale added. A n n i e Wo n g o f t h e Mammalian Diving Reflex (the “parent” art company of the Torontonians founded by artistic director Darren O’Donnell) said the film is a must-see for its thoughtfulness.

Nerupa Somasale, left, and Sanjay Ratnan star in the short film, How to be a brown teen, to be screened at this year’s Lab Cab Festival July 26 and 27.
“It’s their commentary on how to be a teenager. It’s unfiltered, raw and honest,” she said. The group, she added, also demonstrates how powerful young artists’ voices are. “The presence of young people are felt along Queen Street as much as the artists and as much as the new people in the neighbourhood,” Wong said. Aside from film projects, the Torontonians also began monthly social gatherings
in Parkdale celebrating rap, dance and other performance art in at-risk neighbourhoods in Toronto. How to be a brown teen screens at the Toronto Public Library Parkdale Branch meeting room at 3 and 4 p.m. (both days) at the eighth annual Lab Cab Festival. The festival runs July 26 and 27 from 2 to 8 p.m. beginning on Dufferin Street to Roncesvalles Avenue.

I have been delivering for the Parkdale Villager for about 6 years now and I enjoy being able to meet new people while delivering. I get help from my family members and a couple of the exchange student roommates. I enjoy knitting, watching movies and cooking. I depend on the money I earn from delivering as it helps supplement for my minimum wage job that I have as a waitress. Athlete will play in Australian tourney
One-year countdown is on for Pan Am/Parapan Am Games
LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com
JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com
Twenty-nine-year-old Gillian English says she’s been given a “once-in-a-life-time opportunity. The Roncesvalles Village resident and member of the High Park Demons Australian Football Club has been selected to play for the Midnight Suns Canadian Development Team in the Australian Rules Football International Cup in Melbourne, Australia, next month. “I’m very excited, very honoured, said English, who admitted she’s still “processing the news. “It’s insane to me. I’m going to do my best. English could never have imagined this for herself, mostly because she had never played a team sport in high school or university. She only just began playing Aussie Rules Football four years ago. “It’s probably the least

High Park Demons Australian Football Club member Gillian English, 29, has been chosen to play for the Midnight Suns Canadian Development Team in the Australian Rules Football International Cup in Melbourne, Australia.
likely thing to happen to me, she admitted. “I started this at 25. English had tried out for Team Canada, but wasn’t chosen, although her teammates Heather Walshe and Sarah Ennor qualified.
“I’m B-Team material. I’ll take the opportunity, she said with a chuckle. The actor-playwrightcomedian said she fell in love with the sport immediately, despite never really being athletic before. Nicknamed “The Enforcer, English typically plays full back or half back flank on the back line. With the High Park Demons, English has won three Grand Final Championships in a row and in 2011, she was the recipient of the Coach’s Award for dedication. Four years ago as a temp, she wanted to show her dedication to the job and began playing Aussie Rules because everyone else in the office played. While the job didn’t last, she kept up with the football. Since learning she was chosen for the Midnight Suns in June, English said she has upped her training, practicing two to three times a week in addition to her own circuit work and games. Like acting, she said she loves the teamwork of football.
Plus, it’s such a physical sport. The opportunity to represent Canada is a “tremendous honour, yet also a “rather sizeable financial burden. Because she only found out she’d made the team at the end of June, English has only about a month to come up with at least $5,000. That’s why she organized a star studded fundraiser at Comedy Bar on her birthday, July 14. She’ll be hosting another fundraiser, performing her one-woman show ‘Drag Queen Stole My Dress’ at the Comedy Bar, 945 Bloor St. West, Thursday, July 31 at 9:30 p.m. English is the artistic producer and founder of The Theatre Elusive. Originally from Nova Scotia, English trained in theatre at Dalhousie University and the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA). She has headlined the London Big Comedy Go-To and The Spring Fever Festival.

Thousands packed into Nathan Phillips Square recently to kick off a one-year countdown to Toronto’s big chance to host the world. Premier Kathleen Wynne, Mayor Rob Ford and other politicians were on hand as Cisco unveiled a giant clock counting down the days until the Toronto 2015 Pan Am/ ParaPan Am Games. The kick-off also marked the start of a two-day celebration in the square, which allowed people to enjoy live music, sports, games, food and more. “This is a wonderful, wonderful opportunity for our city, for our province and for our country, Wynne said of the Games. Wynne added the Games would leave a long-lasting legacy for Toronto and for its athletes in particular, through the construction of highquality sporting venues. “They won’t have to go to
other venues to find a velodrome, or to find a pool, or to find a track to practice at because we’re going to have those facilities right here. Ford received a mixed reception as he welcomed those in attendance at the countdown ceremony. “The Games will be an opportunity to display our diverse culture, talents and passion for sports to the rest of the world, he said. “Local businesses will also be able to benefit from the economic opportunities the Games will bring to this great city. Pan American Sports Organization Vice-President and three-time Olympian Ivar Sisniega noted the Games will bring the top athletes from North and South America to compete in 36 sports. He added the world’s eyes will be on the city as these athletes vie for gold.
