Plant theft a costly problem for DuWest BIA ERIN HATFIELD ehatfield@insidetoronto.com This year, the Dundas West Business Improvement Area (BIA) chose a bold design for their sidewalk planter boxes with a single canna lily, with its large, attractive foliage, as

the centrepiece.

But, to some, it turns out the flower is more attractive than something to look at.

Helder Ramos is the coordinator of the Dundas West BIA, which incorporates the stretch of Dundas Street West between L a n s d ow n e Av e n u e a n d

Rusholme Road. He explained of their 47 large street planters, the centre canna lily has been stolen from about half, and in some cases more than once.

In addition to the flower thefts, all of the street planters and their contents have been vandalized at least once.

It’s becoming a major, and costly concern for BIA, Ramos said.

Toronto Council has approved a cap on restaurants moving into Parkdale along Queen Street West.

The cap will limit the number of bars and restaurants on the stretch between Roncesvalles Avenue and Dufferin Street to 25 per cent of all businesses on the street, and comes after several years of study and consultation.

According to councillor Gord Perks, the cap is essential because of the effect the concentration of bars, and restaurants that turn into bars after 11 p.m., is having on both the neighbourhood and neighbouring businesses.

He said the neighbourhood has become well-known as “party-dale,” and residents and businesses have to deal with drunken patrons urinating and defecating on their properties.

“I have residents who ask me, ‘how many times do I have to wipe other peoples’ feces off my property before you do something?” said Perks.

P

arkdale taverns Sun Fa or Happy Time might be more of a watering hole than an arts venue, but Aviva ArmourOstroff said that is exactly why the Lab Cab Festival is curating performances in both places.

“Our goal is to bring people who would never ever step into the Sun Fa in there and to bring theatre to the people who sit there drinking their beer,” explained Armour-Ostroff, the artistic director of Lab Cab Festival: Parkdale.

“Then those people will get to hear 20 minutes of Bluegrass music or see a 30-minute play they would never have gone outside of their world to see.”

When Lab Cab was created it was held at the Factory Theatre on Bathurst Street. Performances were held in the washrooms, lobbies, attic, basement

and every little nook and cranny of the heritage building, Armour-Ostroff said.

Lab Cab had grown out of a monthly cabaret and was a safe environment for people to try stuff out and it didn’t have to be a 60 minute fully produced play.

After six years at the Factory Theatre, the Lab Cab Festival is now moving to Parkdale. Armour-Ostroff lives in Parkdale and said the diversity of ethnicity and economics is complimentary to the diversity of art Lab Cab shows.

“Art is sometimes stigmatized and there is this idea that it is only accessible to the people who can afford it,” she said.

“We really wanted to make it accessible to everyone and bring art into the neighbourhood.”

“We want to expose and explore this neighbourhood,” Armour-Ostroff said. “It is a chance to showcase this neighbourhood not only to people who live outside of Parkdale, but to the people who live here.”

Even though it isn’t confined to a single building anymore, Armour-Ostroff said Lab Cab is still focused on bringing art to nontraditional spaces.

Lab Cab starts each day with a free pancake breakfast at noon outside Hideaway Antiques.

Performances begin at

noon on Queen Street West, near Roncesvalles Avenue and moves east toward Dufferin Street throughout the day. More than one hundred groups from various artistic disciplines will perform and Nannies on Call have partnered with Lab Cab to provide free child care.

“You can drop your kid off, go see 15 minutes of weird poetry and then go pick your kids up,” she said, adding there are kid friendly activities and performances.

In addition, businesses along Queen Street West in Parkdale will be having sidewalk sales and selling food outside their businesses.

The Lab Cab Festival is supported by the Ontario Trillium Foundation, Toronto Arts Council, Canadian Heritage and the Parkdale Village BIA.

In this edition’s special feature, we highlight local hiking trails and others across the city where people can go to spot wildlife, keep active, socialize and reenergize.

Other stories we’ve collected online will take you butterfly watching along the Leslie Street Spit, jogging through the ravines of the Don River and exploring the ecosystems of the 250-acre Humber Arboretum in north Etobicoke.

There’s a surprising number of hiking and walking trails in our city. There are so we couldn’t list them all our view many, within our feature.

When you walk some of them Discover it’s easy to forget you’re in the nature in your middle of a bustling urban centre – like when you’re followbackyard ing the winding trails through the tall, dense forests of High Park. Others have landmark reminders, like the condo tower that looms over the meadowland of the Humber Arboretum.

But all, some would suggest, have the power to refresh the spirit. The federal non-profit group Turtlefeather True Nature uses outings along these trails to help women who have experienced abuse gain confidence and reduce stress. It’s also a welcome outlet for groups like the Metro Toronto Fitness Club, who has been taking to the trails for years (nearly 50 in this case), seeking not only outdoor activity, but new friendships. The group meets weekly for social walks and organizes social activities on a regular basis.

Though one wouldn’t normally associate hiking and city life, these protected green spaces prove the two can compliment one another and we hope our feature will prove to our readers that hiking is accessible here in our communities.

So pack a lunch, grab the sunscreen (and bug spray) and head out on your own trail adventure.

These green spaces provide a natural oasis that can’t be fully appreciated until you’re there.

Take time for yourself, or bring the whole family and discover the great outdoors right in your backyard.

Council goes on subway shopping trip We’re going shopping!

It looks like our municipal representatives are enthused about spending about a billion dollars to expand subway transit in Scarborough.

Despite what must be discouraging statistics, our city has always been the strongest backer of transit.

For example, the TTC’s operating costs per kilometre have soared and usage has not kept pace with population growth.

Since amalgamation, every taxpaying household’s subsidy for transit has almost tripled to about $350, surpassing every other service except police and fire.

Yet Torontonians’ need to support transit is essential. We are the primary beneficiaries, and neither Queen’s Park nor Ottawa would advance funds if property taxpayers didn’t make significant payments.

It’s not that mayors past and present haven’t asked the provincial or federal

david soknacki beyond the headlines governments. The senior governments acknowledge partial responsibility for transit projects. But they have their own financial challenges. Both governments have been noncommittal to prioritizing subway expansion in Scarborough.

Transit represents about half of the city’s debt. Back in 2000, council approved a five-year capital program of nearly $800 million for the TTC. By this year that figure has grown sevenfold. Interest expenses have become our third largest expenditure, now $260 annually per household.

As unsustainable as these growth rates are, there is room for additional expansion, if council is willing to continue prioritizing in favour of transit.

Take our property-tax rate, for example. Our low tax level and minimal rates

of increase are the envy of our neighbours.

The problem is each one per cent increase of Toronto’s tax rate only brings in about $20 million, enough to cover incremental charges, but nothing more. Recouping the entire project through city regular operations would require substantial tax increases, program cuts, or both.

In fact council has shown itself completely adverse to considering new taxes. That leaves debt. Toronto has excellent debt ratings. As a result, council could raise enough debt, although interest rates might rise.

This shopping trip begins painlessly and irresponsibly. Council can commit to spend a billion dollars. We can even pay the interest charges.

The big catch is council is not capable of paying back the principal.

Time to get off our hands, reader writes Lack of transit funding has been a problem for our city for many years and as long as our politicians sit on their hands, it will continue.

Funding will be an election issue during the next municipal and provincial elections, and most likely the ones to follow.

The time to do something has past now.

It is make up time and the expense will only climb.

“Then there is the Saturday night vandalism where entire planters are uprooted and thrown on the floor.”

Each year, the Dundas West BIA spends the lion’s share of its budget on planting flowers and purchasing hanging baskets to make the west-end strip an attractive place to be.

They hire a local garden centre, Vis Viva Gardens, to do the plantings and much of the work is sub-contracted to Parkdale Green Thumb Enterprises.

“Our planters this year are not looking as good as they could and we are attributing it directly to the beating that they are taking,” Ramos said.

People put trash in them, lean on them and crush the flowers and there has even been cases where people have vomited in them.

The BIA spends about $80,000 a year on its 47

planters, hanging baskets and plantings, and maintenance to the parkettes and their commemorative garden, Teresa’s Place, at 1525 Dundas St. There are four annual plantings: spring, summer, fall and winter, and Ramos said vandalism is a yearround problem.

There are some planters on the western edge of the BIA that Ramos said they have given up entirely on planting due to repeated theft of the plants.

“These planters are there to be appreciated by everyone in the community,” he said.

“The whole idea behind creating public spaces and putting out benches and floral arrangements is to create an atmosphere that is conducive to lingering and to enjoying the street.”

Ramos asked business owners to point their security cameras at the planters to identify vandals and then ask them to stop.

“If it happened to be the same person that caused $40,000 in damage, maybe there would be an incentive to recuperate that with a challenge.”

As well, Ramos said, if you see people leaving litter in the planters, ask them to leave their trash in the nearest receptacle.

Stop Kiss named fan favourite at Fringe LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com Roncesvalles Village resident Melissa Hood, producer and star of Fringe Festival favourite Stop Kiss said she’s thrilled the play has been named one of the best of this year’s lineup.

The play, set in New York City, explores the unexpected love story between two female friends, a savvy city girl, who relishes in her magic eight-ball to make life decisions, and a plucky teacher from St. Louis, who recently left her long-term boyfriend to pursue a controversial teaching fellowship in the Bronx.

What follows is a new relationship rattled by a shocking and random act of violence.

First written by American playwright Diana Son and produced OffBroadway in 1998, starring Sandra Oh, of Grey’s Anatomy fame, Stop Kiss had never been performed in Toronto.

“We’re all just really excited to go onto the next space – it has extended the life of our show.”

The production will have three additional performances at the Toronto Centre for the Arts between July 26 and 30.

“One of the things that people have been talking about is the great chemistry between Callie (played

by Hood) and Sara (played by coproducer Kate Ziegler, a Dora award nominee).

“The audiences have enjoyed the relationship we’ve built. The feedback I got was that people really enjoyed the relationship that developed between Callie and Sara.”

Tree guards to be installed across Dundas West BIA

Hood said she was surprised how funny the play is.

“It deals with some intense subject matters, but at the same time, there’s a lot of humour in it,” she said.

Being recognized as one of eight best productions – out of a total of 148 – is an acknowledgement of all the hard work by Hood, the rest of the cast and director Shaun Benson, a Junction resident.

“We’re really thrilled. It was a great script,” she said. “It’s really exciting for us that people really enjoyed the acting. It’s really encouraging because theatre is a tough industry.

It was such a warm, positive experience at the Fringe.”

Rounding out the cast are Trish Adams (A Chorus Line), Ronnie Rowe (The Firm) and Anthony Ulc (Rookie Blue).

Look for Community Canoe project in Trinity Bellwoods Park JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com The plan to turn Ward 21 into Canada’s first Homegrown National Park is continuing in earnest with the launch of a crowd-funding campaign for a project dubbed Community Canoe.

Launched by Parkdale resident Aidan Dahlin Nolan, the project aims to see canoe planters filled with native plant species installed in a number of city parks, including Trinity Bellwoods, Christie Pits, Little Norway, Bickford Park and Stanley Park.

Dahlin Nolan said the idea arose out of a trip he and some friends took to Algonquin Park last year.

“We decided we wouldn’t make it a regular canoe trip, we’d make it like a business trip and paddled around Algonquin in suits,” he said. “I thought, ‘what would it be like for a businessman to canoe to work?’”

He paired up with the David Suzuki Foundation, which is leading the charge to turn Ward 21 into a national park by enhancing its green spaces.

“At first, I was thinking of a program like BIXI bikes, but having BIXI canoes instead,” Dahlin Nolan said.

“The reason it went in the direction of planters is the David Suzuki Foundation wanted to do a bunch of planting projects.”

Community Canoe has already

Over the summer and fall, 58 new tree guards will be installed across the Dundas West Business Improvement Area (BIA).

The guards will protect the young trees, planted about a year and a half ago, while also providing additional structures for people to lock their bicycles to. This initiative is being done through a cost share between the Dundas West BIA and the City of Toronto. holds rummage sale Saturday wCentre

“We were lucky to get our first canoe at Fort York donated by an outfitting company called Voyager Quest,” Dahlin Nolan said. “We’re hoping to get most of the canoes donated or used so the money we raise can go more toward the plant-

The organizer would like to have the entire project, which will consist of between 12 and 15 canoes in local parks, completed by the end of this summer, but admits that goal may not be possible.

“We’re more likely to find used or donated canoes in the fall once the (canoeing) season’s over,” he said.

The canoes will contain native plant species such as black-eyed Susans, honeysuckle, prairie smoke,

common milkweed, Canadian anemone, bearberries and wild strawberries. Those plants, Dahlin Nolan said, will not only beautify the parks, but will help local wildlife as well. “We’re looking for species that will be good for pollinating insects like butterflies and bees, and for birds,” he said.

Councillor Mike Del Grande suggested the notion that bars and restaurants might impact quality of life shouldn’t be enough reason for the city to interfere in the marketplace.

Deputy Mayor Dou g Holyday said council should approve an enforcement blitz rather than limiting business.

“I think the real problem here isn’t the number of restaurants. It’s the quality of the restaurants,” he said.

Toronto Council has imposed an interim control bylaw that will at least slow the planned construction of a Walmartanchored shopping mall on Bathurst Street just south of College Street.

It was a win at city council for community members in opposition to a proposed condo on Ossington Avenue.

At the July 19 council meeting, council passed a resolution to support the community’s position at the Ontario Municipal Board (OMB) regarding 109OZ, the redevelop of 103-111 Ossington Ave. The proposed development is for a six-storey mixed-use building with ground floor retail/commercial, 86 residential units and two levels of below-grade parking.

The developer has appealed the zoning bylaw amendment and site plan application to the OMB. With this council decision, planning staff have been directed to continue discussions with the applicant to negotiate issues with the height, massing and amenity space to try to reach a

Council has voted to end the practice of parking cars in Marilyn Bell Park during the Canadian National Exhibition.

Pa r k s , Fo r e s t r y a n d Recreation, has a longstanding relationship with the Canadian National Exhibition Association (CNEA) to allow parking in the waterfront park.

But in recent years Marilyn Bell Park has undergone a major revitalization.

In May 2012, the city sent a letter encouraging the CNEA to come up with vehicle parking arrangements that do not include Marilyn Bell Park.

udith Kidd relishes taking part in the free walking tours of High Park held on the first and third Sunday of each month.

A relatively new resident of Swansea Village, Kidd said the walks have provided her the opportunity to explore the area, particularly lesser known places in High Park.

“I’ve really enjoyed them,” Kidd said as she traversed one of the many trails in the park as part of a recent tour called ‘Tramping the Trails’.

“The first one I went on was last year. It was based on a children’s book called Who Comes to the Park? What we did was visit

different viewpoints of scenes from the book. The author was here too.”

This particular summer day dawned overcast and muggy, but the rain held off and as many as a dozen people joined in on the walk, led by Roncesvalles Village resident Mark Ellwood, of the Walking Tours Committee, a group that has been organizing the walks for about 12 years.

“It’s quite the little committee.

We usually get between 12 and 30 people out depending on the weather. When we walk, it’s often times around Grenadier Pond. They’re not for exercise, but for information and socialization.”

of the Grenadier Restaurant and Cafe for each walk. This one, ‘Tramping the Trails,’ was described as an interpretive walk about paths – a last minute replacement. Julia Bennett was scheduled to lead a ‘Shakespeare in the Park’ tour, but was called out of town.

“We tend to look at the sky, the trees, but this one’s about the ground. The ground we walk

on is as intriguing as any other aspect of the park,” Ellwood said.

The walking tours encourage people to take a proprietorship role of High Park, to entice them to get involved in improvement projects and the like, he said.

People tend to not pay attention to what they’re walking on.

“We’re going to talk about who put this here,” said Ellwood, gesturing to the paved path he was standing on. “We’re going to go on different surfaces and discuss how they were formed.

We don’t think about what we’re walking on and here we can.

This is all about looking down at what we’re walking on.”

Ellwood led the group down along several off-leash dog area paths, down into Spring

Valley, near the creek and back up across the top of the park, revealing that the less travelled, off-the-beaten path trails are his favourites. As the group proceeded down from the restaurant through a couple of chain-link gates into the off-leash area, Ellwood pointed out that this particular path did not exist two decades ago, however, as the Canadian Stage Shakespeare in High Park was founded, it has become more and more popular.

The path continued past the outdoor CanStage, further into the cordoned off areas for dogs.

“Nature decided what it wants to do – there are rivulets here.

“How do we create access to all areas, while protecting the natural environment from offleash dogs?” he mused. “We’re using fences to contain dogs, wildlife and people.”

When one approaches a fork in the road, take it, encouraged Ellwood.

“You can get lost on these trails. You forget you’re in the middle of the city,” said A.J. Alberti, a member of the Walking Tours Committee, who lives near Jane and Annette streets.

As the group neared the allot-

ment gardens, where people can rent a plot of land to garden, Ellwood pointed to the remnants of old asphalt. Further along, he said the trail was part of a former fitness trail that goes back three decades when ‘ParticipACTION’ was popular.

In 1996, the fitness trail became part of the off-leash area.

Across from Spring Creek, through a gate leading out of the off-leash area is a path that Ellwood said, “invites itself to be followed,” in part because it’s difficult to see what lies ahead.
