Parkgoers and cyclists in Wards 19 and 20 can expect big changes to Stadium Road Park, the Martin Goodman Trail and Coronation Park. All three will see improvements as early as next year, according to the City of Toronto’s Parks, Forestry and Recreation department. A meeting held Monday night, June 1, at the Fort York Visitor Centre, 250 Fort York Blvd., sought public feedback for Stadium Road Park which is located south of Queens Quay on Stadium Road and is split into a south portion adjacent to the waterfront and a separate north section; and also for the Martin Goodman Trail which skirts the north section of the park. The Coronation Park restoration will be done without formal community input. “These two parks (Stadium Road Park, north and south) have never really been programmed and we could be using it in all types of ways,” said Netami Stuart, the landscape architect and project coordinator for the City of Toronto for Stadium Road Park. “We should use it to our best advantage right now.” The capital budget for Stadium Road Park and the >>>THREE, page 6

I think it’s the proof that small actions can have a big impact. – Councillor Ana Bailão
Medical Services (EMS) building at 760 Dovercourt Rd., was the first to be equipped with the panels. The installation of the panels on the roof of the building will reduce its Greenhouse Gas Emissions (GHG) by 12 tonnes per year. According to Leo Mieles, a member of the Friends of McCormick Park community organization, the project is a great way to develop clean energy for the surrounding area. Bailão agrees: “It was a way to bring environmental issues to the heart of the community,” she said. “This is a community that’s becoming more aware of environmental issues and wants to take action on some of these
things. Every day the actions we take have an impact on the environment.” The construction of the panels on the roof is expected to be completed by September. Both Bailão and Mieles believe this project is shining light on how renewable energy strategies can be applied at the local community level. It doesn’t always have to be out of reach for communities that are looking out for the environment and want to help make a change. “I think it’s the proof that small actions can have a big impact and I think that’s what we’re showing here,” Bailão said. “The group of residents that came together with the councillor’s office to improve their park are taking steps in so many directions, where we’re not only improving our park we’re improving our city, we’re educating our neighbours and we’re making our environment better.”

The City of Toronto will receive about $77,000 a year for 20 years in revenue from the sale of electricity generated by the system that will be shared with the province. #BrokenTelephoneTO keeps lines of communication open HILARY CATON hcaton@insidetoronto.com
Q
ueen Street West and Strachan Avenue resident Michael Stulberg wants to encourage his city to have better open lines of communication with each other. To help, Stulberg created the interactive art installation #BrokenTelephoneTO for the global festival 100In1Day that’s coming to Toronto Saturday. “I think Toronto, although it’s a big and special city, lacks some of that openness you find in other cities,” Stulberg said. “I think Torontonians have their guard up a bit and are more private. I think there’s potential to be more communicative with each other.” The festival, which is copresented by Evergreen and the United Way, originated in Bogotá, Colombia. The one-day festival encourages people in their community to participate in
civic engagement through creating community-based events called ‘interventions’ with the hope to help spark change in the city they live in. An intervention falls into six types: installation, recreation, activity, kidcentric, demonstration or education. Last year Torontonians came up with social events, beautification projects and improvements to city infrastructure to help improve their community. This year the festival expects more than 100 urban interventions to pop up in neighbourhoods across the city. His broken telephone idea will be at the west end of Trinity Bellwoods Park. All people have to do is pick up the tin can in the installation and record a 10- to 15-second message, which can then be played back through the vintage megaphone speakers. Its aim is to encourage people to tell a story, rant or share a secret, riddle or song for the next person who comes

along. Each time a message is recorded, the previous one is deleted. No database of recordings is kept. “It’s broken telephone in the sense that one person records something, another hears it and records their own interpretations,” he
explained, adding the installation itself also carries some symbolism. “The can represents this connection to childhood, naive sharing, in the sense that you’re totally open with friends and family and you just tell them secrets and stories openly. And the
head references ancient Greece, which is the birth place of democracy, the participatory approach.” Stulberg said the inspiration for the idea came from the iconic Speakers Corner booth that sat in front of 299 Queen St. W. for nearly two decades. “I remember walking by MuchMusic and thinking, it’s a damn shame that we lost Speakers Corner because I thought it was a really great way to encourage communication between citizens,” he told The Villager. He said he saw it as a great way for people to communicate their grievances, thoughts and opinions with one another while maintaining anonymity. Stulberg, who is working on his master’s degree in design at OCAD University, is no stranger to creating art installations. He’s created a few and put them in Trinity Bellwoods Park, including the handful of life-sized Crayola crayons scattered about the park a
few months ago. He said it’s become a hobby of his, installing art in public spaces, and will continue to spread his art through the park and is already working on his next installation, a phone booth redesign. “I think it’s a great park full of people interested in new experiences and tolerant to deviance,” Stulberg said. “I think public space is something that we should all feel free to actively contribute to and that events like 100In1 bring awareness to its possibility as a site of civic engagement and community development ... the more people (especially the more diverse the people) and the more diverse the projects involved in this event, the stronger impact it will have in mainstreaming public space as a site for community enrichment.”

hould it stay? Should it go? When it comes to the Gardiner Expressway, it appears everyone has something to say. The future of the muchdebated Gardiner is coming up at Toronto City Council’s monthly meeting June 10. After much discussion about which option is best – besides doing ‘nothing’ – the two options left standing are the ‘hybrid’ option – re-configuring the expressway, basically – and the ‘removal’ option, which would tear down the entire portion east of Jarvis Street creating an eight-lane, ground-level boulevard. Factions have come down on both sides: The Toronto Region Board of Trade is on the hybrid side of things as is Mayor John Tory, whose SmartTrack plan plays into this option with a major transit hub proposed for a newly developed 49 acres of land, some public our view some private. On Monday, former Toronto Time to act mayor David Crombie together with the city’s former city planon Gardiner ner said tearing it down is the is now right decision. Also on Monday, the Toronto Board of Health decided not to send to council the report by Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. David McKeown that stated removal would provide the most health benefits. And of course councillors also fall on different sides of the debate, as do Torontonians after given the chance to weigh in on the issue during meetings over the last several months. According to a recent poll by Mainstreet Technologies, 45 per cent of respondents prefer the removal option versus 33 per cent who chose the hybrid option. After all is said and done, it’s time for council to put its money where its mouth is and decide on what exactly to do with the expressway. Its future is something that must be decided – not just for now, but for the estimated 100-year lifecycle of either of the main options on the table. Councillors should decide what’s best for the city and stick to it. And if possible, find a way to make sure future councils don’t fiddle with it like they have for decades on the public transit file. Transportation as a whole in Toronto is a complex issue. It doesn’t matter whether you’re talking public transit or highways. If the Gardiner decision is well-balanced, perhaps transportation in Toronto stands a chance.
column
Tory puts stamp on board of health It’s a wonder nobody thought of it sooner. For years, the Toronto Board of Health has been a prickly ball of left-of-centre conscience that regularly rolls into more, shall we say, pragmatically conservative debates at Toronto council. Part of this is because of the mandate of the board, and the city’s health department – to exclusively concern itself with the health and well-being of Torontonians. Part of this is because for many years, mayors and their deputies have left the city council appointments to the generally progressive councillors who ask to serve on the board. So it has been that when a medical officer of health has suggested that pesticides ought to be banned or smoking in public places curtailed or casino gambling is a bad idea, the board members have obediently and enthusiastically sent that information
david nickle the city on to city council – where it might be disregarded, but cannot be ignored. You would have thought that mayors in the past would have done something about it. action Well, maybe not David Miller, who generally found himself in agreement with the pearl-clutchers at public health, but certainly Mel Lastman and Rob Ford ought to have realized that this finger-wagging fifth column needed attention. Leave it to Mayor John Tory and his deputy Denzil Minnan-Wong to finally take note, and action. Through a combination of public and city council appointments, the 20142018 Toronto Board of Health is shaping up to be a
very different beast. How different? Let’s see. On Monday, the board had before it a report from Medical Officer of Health Dr. David McKeown, weighing in on – what else? – the Gardiner Expressway debate. Tory, as you may know, favours an expensive and controversial plan to rebuild the elevated highway where it connects to the Don Valley Parkway. In a fairly cursory report, McKeown joined various planning and city-building experts in suggesting that was a bad idea. In the last term, that report would have made its way promptly to council, and it’s not hard to see how: the councillors on the board were Ford opponents such as Raymond Cho, John Filion, Joe Mihevc, Gord Perks, Sarah Doucette and Kristyn Wong-Tam. Cue the replacements this term, where a much
smaller progressive rump of Joe Cressy, Mihevc and Doucette are joined by Jon Burnside, Christin Carmichael Grebb and Frances Nunziata – along with a new crew of citizen appointees. Paying attention It’s not a total political shift, but it was enough, along with a few of the board’s citizen appointees, to deep-six that awkward report. The board agreed to send it along to the planning department. But when council debates the Gardiner at its June meeting, the awkward opinion of Toronto’s Chief Medical Officer of Health will be off the table. Someone in the new administration has been paying attention.

City unveils plan to reduce congestion around Alexander Muir/Gladstone school HILARY CATON hcaton@insidetoronto.com Concerned residents and parents had a lot to say about a plan to ease chronic congestion – including vehicle, bicycle and pedestrian – around Alexander Muir/Gladstone Avenue Public School at a meeting at the school. Adding to the woes of the school, which is at 108 Gladstone Ave. at Waterloo Avenue, is that it is on a major east-west bike path. And cyclists, instead of circuiting around the school, are avoiding busy Waterloo Avenue, which they should be using, by cutting right through the school. “They cut through that southwest corner of the yard and that’s an issue because we potentially have kids that are out there all day,” said Wilma Verhagen, the principal of Alexander Muir/Gladstone Avenue Public School, at the Tuesday, May 26 meeting. “We have kids that go out not just for recess times, but physical

education. Teachers will bring them out on a nice day and children can definitely get hurt.” The proposed solution unveiled at the meeting, which was hosted by Ward 18 Davenport councillor Ana Bailao and attended by Jacquelyn
Hayward Gulati, the city’s manager of Cycling Infrastructure and Programs, involves a redo of Waterloo Avenue, a small one-way (eastbound), oneblock street, that would: • reduce the speed limit to 30km/h from its current 40km/h speed;
• replace the standard asphalt with more of a boulevard-brick surface: “The point of it is to alert drivers to slow down, to alert cyclists to slow down and recognize this is a shared space,” Hayward Gulati said. “At this point it’s very conceptual and it shows some sort of tactile difference. We haven’t gotten to the detailed design phase yet.” • and add to the existing eastbound bike path on Waterloo Avenue a contra-flow westbound bike lane. The latter proposal, however, sparked concern that adding an extra bike lane isn’t a good idea for an already narrow street that’s already tough to drive through with cars parked on both sides. The suggestion to widen the road as a solution was quickly shot down as it’s a costly option and would take away sidewalk space for pedestrians and reduce accessibility.

The budget for Coronation Park will cover the restoration of the plaques by trees; new lighting; signage that provides a central map, tree legend and the history of the park; new benches; and the removal and planting of trees. The dog park will also get a revamping with dog-friendly fountains and lighting improvements. Stuart created three different concepts for Stadium Road Park – community, classic and active. As the names suggest, each concept has a different focus that caters to a certain feel of the park: • ‘community’ has the park used as a gathering space for picnics and possible performances with a small amphitheatre; • ‘classic’ is more low-key where people can sit and enjoy the view of the water; • and ‘active’ suggests increased physical activity for all ages with outdoor fitness equipment, and a Ping-Pong table. Residents in attendance were more in favour of the active option. “I think the more we bring the community together and give people things to do in the park, as opposed to sitting and just looking in the water, is much better,” said Beverley Thorpe, a Queens

Quay resident. “The more we can actually be active the better.” For the Martin Goodman Trail, Stuart focused on two “pinch points” that need immediate attention due to safety concerns at the curve near Stadium Road Park north and the curve near west side of Tip Top Lofts. Narrow curves The current curves are narrow and in terrible condition Stuart said. She proposes each curve be widened to accommodate the multiuse trail that sees a lot of foot traffic and cyclists. She also suggested creating a cantilever bridge that would pull out over the water near the north park. “It’s an expensive proposition,” said Stuart, whose
budget is $600,000. “We’ll start with the trail because it’s a safety priority and see what we can do. What’s leftover will be used for the parks (north and south).” According to Stuart, the feedback provided in the meeting was helpful and will be taken into consideration for future designs. The next steps will be to compile and hire someone to do a detailed design for contractors to bid on and begin construction in 2016. “People had grand ideas with some very good suggestions,” Stuart said. “I’m looking forward to working with somebody to get these things done.” For copies of the comment form provided at the meeting, email Netami Stuart at nstuart@toronto.ca

Diversity scholarships awarded to 46 students at gala dinner
Prospective pet owners will be able to adopt a dog or cat for $25, as well as talk to experts about pet care. This event is hosted by the Toronto Humane Society and Toronto Animal Services and is sponsored by PetSmart and PetSmart Charities of Canada.
Some 46 Toronto youth got a much-needed shot in the arm when it comes to realizing their dreams of getting a post-secondary education, thanks to the latest round of Investing in Our Diversity Scholarships. The program, which was initiated by Scadding Court Community Centre in 2002 with the help of lawyer and social justice activist Bill McMurtry, recognizes highachieving students who work to end racism, promote diversity and build stronger, healthier communities. It has grown immensely over the past 14 years – in its first year, two students earned Investing in Our Diversity Scholarships, a far cry from Wednesday’s number. The winning students, hailing from across Toronto, were feted at a gala dinner at Dim Sum King restaurant
wine, street performers and an open mic night featuring live bands and DJs on stage.

on Dundas Street West. Each will receive up to $4,000 to help them cover the cost of earning a post-secondary education. Munira Abukar, who received one of the scholarships in 2010, said without it, her life would have traveled a very different path. “If I hadn’t been a recipient of this scholarship, I wouldn’t have gone into the program I went into,” she said, noting not worrying as much about money gave her more freedom to follow her dreams instead of simply studying in a field that would ensure she could pay off student loans quicker. Cu r re n t l y a To r o n t o Community Housing board member, Abukar was named one of Chatelaine magazine’s Top 20 women under 30 in 2011. She remains active in her community and ran for Toronto Council in 2014. “This scholarship changed not only my life personally, but also the lives of my parents,
who have now seen seven of their nine children go on to some form of post-secondary education,” she said during the Wednesday, May 27 ceremony. While Scadding Court has run the program for the past 14 years, handing out more than $800,000 in scholarship money to some 300 recipients thanks to the generosity of its many sponsors and donors, next year’s awards will be administered by Toronto Community Housing (TCH). Lenna Bradburn, TCH vice-president of resident and community services, said she has observed the barriers – often financial – that too many young people face when looking to further their education. pan am/parapan am games
Local studio owner helps pen Pan Am anthem
“
NORM NELSON nnelson@insidetoronto.com The Toronto 2015 Pan Am/ Parapan Am Games now has its own anthem, and it’s co-written and produced by veteran Toronto producer Murray Daigle in his Liberty Village studio. Titled ‘Together We Are One’, the song was officially released by TO2015 and the CBC last Thursday with three versions available by Serena Ryder in English; co-writer Jasmine Denham in French; and Eva Avila in Spanish. All were produced by Daigle. The rousing anthem follows on the heels of two hugely popular Canadian sport event anthems – K’naan’s ‘Wavin’ Flag’, chosen as Coca-Cola’s promotional anthem for the 2010 FIFA World Cup; and Nikki Yanofsky’s ‘I Believe’ for the 2010 Vancouver Winter Games. A former touring musicianturned-producer, Daigle grew up in Ajax, but has lived in Toronto for most of his adult

life. For more than the past half a decade he’s been living in Scarborough in the Victoria Park and Hwy. 401 area while running his studio in Liberty Village, Murray Daigle Sound Recordings on Atlantic Avenue. The song was recorded in the winter at CBC studios in downtown Toronto and then subsequently mixed by Daigle at his studio. The song originated out of a songwriters camp run by the Songwriters Association of Canada, sponsored by

TO2015. Daigle’s winning collaboration from the sessions included fellow songwriters: • Denham (who sang the French version) – she’s a seasoned songwriter, producer, vocal coach and stage performer; • and Bobby John – a Montreal-based singer, songwriter, producer and front man for the rock band Play The Angel. “That’s kind of what I do for a living,” he said. “I pitch records to artists and hopefully they land and hopefully I get to produce them and in this case (‘Together We Are One’) that’s how it worked out.” Over the past two and a half decades, Daigle has had

his share of producing (and sometimes co-writing) hits with varied artists such as Keshia Chante, Neverest, Not By Choice, Cauterize, Mudmen, Mugshot and The Fullblast, and he said he certainly hopes he has another hit on his hands. His present Liberty Village location, he said, is ideal. “Obviously it’s one of hip neighbourhoods in Toronto right now and it’s absolutely beautiful.” He knows because he actually gets out a lot. “Because I sit down for a living and I work usually 10 to 15 hours a day pretty consistently, I take a lot of walks and it’s really nice to be in a neighbourhood that’s so beautiful and has so many great restaurants and so many great services,” he said. “And my clients absolutely love it. Everybody raves about coming here, especially in the summer.”

All three versions of the song are available from iTunes; and CBC has uploaded Serena Ryder’s version to YouTube.
